2012 NWC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

About The NWC

About NCAA Division III Since 1996, the Northwest Conference has been affiliated with the NCAA’s largest division. NCAA Division III is comprised of 446 member instituions, accounting for 40 percent of the NCAA’s total membership. Like the schools of the NWC, 80 percent of Division III schools are private institutions. Division III athletics provides a well-rounded collegiate experience that involves a balance of rigorous academics, competitive athletics and the opportunity to pursue the multitude of other co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities offered on Division III campuses. Division III playing season and eligibility standards minimize conflicts between athletics and academics, allowing student-athletes to focus on their academic programs and the achievement of a degree.

START TIMES Men’s Race: 11 a.m.

Women’s Race: Noon

AWARDS An awards presentation will take place following the conclusion of the women’s race. The top seven finishers will receive All-Northwest Conference honors. Finishers No. 8 through No. 14 will be accorded second team honors.

Founded in 1926, the Northwest Conference has established itself as one of the top small college conferences in the nation. Comprised of nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington, the NWC is competitive on the national level in a wide array of sports and is recognized for its emphasis on academic excellence. The Northwest Conference was founded in 1926 with charter members College of Idaho, Linfield College, Pacific University, the University of Puget Sound, Whitman College and Willamette University. It is one of the oldest continually operating athletic conferences in the western United States. While the membership of the conference has changed over the years, the mission of the conference to promote, organize and supervise intercollegiate athletics competition among member institution in a way that encourages competition to be equitable, fair, amicable, enjoyable and educational has never waivered. Lewis & Clark College joined the NWC in 1931 (then known as Albany College), left in 1938 and rejoined in 1949 under its current name. Pacific Lutheran University joined in 1965 and Whitworth University in 1970. The College of Idaho left in 1978, joining what is now the NAIA’s Cascade Conference. Whitworth dropped out of the NWC in 1984, but rejoined in 1988. George Fox University joined the conference in 1996 and Seattle University was a member for one year (1997-1998) before moving to NCAA Division II (they are now a NCAA Division I independent). Menlo College was an associate member of the NWC in football from 2006 to 2010. For the first 57 years of the conference’s existence, the NWC sponsored sports for men only. That changed in 1984 when the NWC merged with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges to become the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the Northwest Conference in 1996. After decades of success as a NAIA member conference, the schools of the Northwest Conference moved to NCAA Division III affiliation in 1996 and attained full membership in 1998. The move was embraced as one that would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for the studentathlete in all endeavors of competition. Athletics competition at the NCAA Division III level is based on the development of student-athletes through a comprehensive educational experience. The Northwest Conference has had a presence in NCAA Division III national competition from the time they joined. Pacific Lutheran’s football team won the Division III football championship in 1998, the conference’s first year of full affiliation. In all, the NWC has won seven NCAA Division III championships. Linfield football and George Fox baseball won national championships in 2004, Linfield softball in 2007 and 2011, George Fox women’s basketball in 2009. In 2012, Pacific Lutheran won the Division III softball title in a game that saw the Lutes and Linfield reach the championship game.

2012 NWC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Championships Preview Willamette men, Lewis & Clark women stand as top contenders for team championships Willamette’s men and Lewis & Clark’s women stand as the favorites to claim conference titles as the Northwest Conference Cross Country Championships take place today at the Sunset Grove Golf Course, north of Forest Grove. The Bearcat men will be looking to claim their first NWC title since 2009, having been beat by Whitworth each of the last two seasons. The Pirates enter the meet with a youthful lineup that includes none of their top-five runners from the 2011 campaign. Lewis & Clark is the favorite to win their third consecutive conference championship thanks to a season that has seen them perform well in large meets, including the Sundodger Invitational and Charles Bowles Invitational. Willamette, who finished second to the Pioneers each of the last two seasons, will also be a top challenger as they aim for their first crown since 2008. Individually, Pacific Lutheran’s Alan DenAdel is the top returner in the men’s race. The Bow, Wash., native placed fourth in the 2011 championship. The women’s race is wide open as both the defending champion, Lewis & Clark’s Illana Livstrom, and the runner-up, Whitworth’s Joy Shufeldt, have missed much of the season with injuries. MEN After finishing second to the Pirates each of the last two championship meets, Willamette appears poised to claim the trophy in 2012. The Bearcats enter the meet ranked No. 2 in the USTFCCCA West Region Rankings and have shown well in larger meets. Willamette placed fifth at their own Charles Bowles Invitational in September and were 11th at the Brooks Invitational in Wisconsin. Freshman Nathan Conrad has assumed the role of top runner over returning senior Kevin Aubol, who has missed the season thus far with an injury. Whitworth, meanwhile, has shown well despite losing all five of their top runners from last year. The Pirates are ranked fourth regionally after strong performances at the Sundodger Invitational and the Bowles Invitational. Freshman Colton Berry and senior Tim Hill provide a solid one-two punch with both runners capable of sub-26-minute times. Puget Sound, who finished eighth at year’s championship, is also figuring into the mix with a No. 3 regional ranking. The Loggers finished sixth overall at the Bowles Invitational and won the L&C Invitational on Oct. 13. Matt Klein is the Loggers’ top athlete, earning NWC Student-Athlete of the Week honors after finishing second at the L&C Invitational with a time of 25:54.10. Lewis & Clark and George Fox also enter the NWC Championships as regionally ranked teams with the Pioneers ranked No. 9 and the Bruins ranked No. 10. Lewis & Clark finished second at their own L&C Invitational to Puget Sound. Sam Smith has been the Pioneers’ top performer. The 11th place finisher at last year’s championship

owns a season best of 25:34.03 at the Sundodger Invitational. The Bruins have not shown strong in the team standings as of late, but have the individual strength to figure into the title race. They finished 11th at the Bowles Invitational and were sixth at their own George Fox Invitational on Oct. 13. Kyle Dreibelbis is the Bruins’ top returning runner, placing 16th at last year’s championship, but Joseph Pia has finished at the team’s top runner in all four races. Linfield finished third at last year’s championship, but lost most of that team to graduation. The Wildcats were fourth at the L&C Invitational and placed 15th at the Bowles Invitational. Junior Joe Gladow has topped Linfield’s results sheet in every meet this season. Pacific finished fifth at last year’s meet and return most of their lineup to compete in front of the home crowd. Seniors Dan Flora and Joe Deardorff finished 10th and 12th, respectively, at the 2011 meet. Freshman Tyler Shipley turned in a sub-26-minute time at the Sundodger Invitational and will figure into the individual title mix. Whitman stands poised to move up from their sixth place finish at last year’s meet. The Missionaries finished second at their own Whitman Invitational and third at the L&C Invitational behind the legs of seniors Taylor Mesojednik and Cody Rand. Pacific Lutheran also enters the championship with a relatively young roster. DenAdel, however, is the top returning finisher from last year’s meet with his fourth place finish. In 2011, he became PLU’s first competitor at the NCAA Championships since 2002. WOMEN Lewis & Clark fended off hard challenges from Willamette each of the last two years to claim titles and are the favorites to make it three in a row. The Pioneers enter the week ranked No. 22 in the USTFCCCA Division III National Poll and are No. 2 in the West Region. L&C captured top team honors at the Sundodger Invitational and the L&C Invitational. Livstrom is the defending NWC individual champion, but injuries have limited the senior to just one meet this season. Emily Thomas appears to be the favorite to succeed Livstrom after placing fourth last year. She has won three of the four Pioneers’ meets this season, including top honors at the Sundodger Invitational. Willamette will have a lot to say in the NWC title race, entering the week ranked No. 32 nationally and No. 3 in the West Region. The Bearcats finished sixth at their own Charles Bowles Invitational and were 10th at the Brooks Invitational in Wisconsin. Senior Theresa Edwards is the Bearcats’ top returning finisher from last year’s meet. Sophomore Michaela Freeby finished fifth and has been Willamette’s top performer in 2012.

Linfield enters the week ranked No. 6 in the West Region and has performed well despite injuries to some of their top runners. Juniors Siena Noe and Hannah Greider and sophomore Brooke Niemann have taken turns as the Wildcats’ top runners in their four meets, but their title chances will hinge of the health of top returners Mimi Seeley (seventh last year) and Madison Trowbridge (12th). Whitworth stands poised to move up from their sixth place finish last year despite the absence of conference meet runner-up Shufeldt. The Pirates are ranked No. 7 in the West Region and have posted top-10 finishes at all five meets, including a ninth place finish at the Bowles Invitational. Sophomore Christina Anderson has been the Pirates’ top performer. She finished 20th at both the Sundodger and Bowles meets. Whitman finished fourth at last year’s championship and returns a strong core of experienced runners. Ranked No. 9 in the West Region poll, the Missionaries placed second at both the Whitman and Lewis & Clark invitationals and fifth place finish at the Sundodger Invitational. Senior Emilie Gilbert has been Whitman’s top athlete, topped by a 13th place finish at Sundodger. Puget Sound finished fifth at last year’s NWC Championships and also returns an experienced lineup. Senior Carrie Keith placed 15th last year and has been the Loggers’ top performer in all five meets this season. She led Puget Sound to the team title at their own Puget Sound Invitational and a fourth place finish at the L&C Invitational. Pacific Lutheran’s roster features four freshmen in their top-five, but have performed consistently throughout the season. The Lutes topped their season by winning their own PLU Invitational. Amanda Seely and Amanda Wilson have shared top honors for the Lutes this season. Pacific returns an experienced lineup that should allow the Boxers to move up from their eighth place finish in 2011. Sophomore Rachel Schreiber placed 26th last year and has been Pacific’s top performer in three of the team’s four meets. Senior Jilinda Franklin has already run a personal best this season and should compete for all-conference honors. George Fox’s chances to move up from their ninth place finish could hinge on the return of Kate Freiheit, who has missed much of the season with injuries. The Bruins’ season was highlighted by a fourth place finish at the Big Wave Invitational in Hawaii. Sophomore Courtney Hochstetler has been the team’s top performers in two of their four meets.
