Scouting the vikings

Fresh off posting the program's second straight 20-win season for the first time since the late 1980's, Cleveland State welcomes eight new faces into the fold this season. Led by fourth-year head coach Gary Waters, the Vikings posted a 26-11 overall record in 2008-09, winning the Horizon League Tournament title and defeating nationally-ranked Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Just two starters return from last year's club, highlighted by preseason Horizon League All-Conference first team choice Norris Cole. The junior guard averaged 13.3 points per game last season good for sixth in the Horizon League. Cole set a school record by starting all 37 games in 2008-09 and averaged 19.5 points over the two NCAA Tournament contests. Despite losing 57 percent of its scoring and 64 percent of its rebounding, Cleveland State was predicted to finish third in the Horizon League and recieved a pair of first place votes.

NICHOLSON LEADS BONNIES OVER MANSFIELD (Box Score & Full Recap on Page 24)

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Behind a game-high 29 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Andrew Nicholson, the St. Bonaventure held off a feisty Mansfield club for a 82-74 wire-to-wire exhibition win on Friday evening at the Reilly Center. Nicholson finished 10-of-12 from the field, highlighted by four dunks, and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Senior Jonathan Hall chipped in with 16 points and six assists as the team’s only other double figure scorer. The duo combined for 45 of the team’s 82 points. The problems on the defensive end and on the boards came thanks to Nicholson’s counterpart Yuseff Carr, who was the story for Mansfield. The 6-foot-6, 286-lb. forward muscled his way to 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. For the game, St. Bonaventure shot a blistering 57 percent (27-47) from the floor and made 25-of-34 from the charity stripe. The Bonnies 21 assists came at the cost of 15 turnovers. Mansfield shot a modest 41 percent (27-66) for the game, but excelled on the glass, holding a 38-33 advantage. The Mountaineers were able to supplement their shooting percentage with 17 offensive rebounds, including seven from Carr.

PRESEASON HONORS

Sophomore Andrew Nicholson's Rookie of the Year campaign in 2008-09 earned the respect of the A-10's head coach, as the 6-foot-9 forward was named to the preseason All-Conference second team and All-Defensive team. Nicholson was the only player to be named to multiple teams and is just one of three underclassmen on the three preseason teams.

an eye for talent

Out of his eight years as a head coach, MARK SCHMIDT has landed three players who have gone on to win the conference Rookie of the Year award in their respective leagues. Freshman ANDREW NICHOLSON became the second player in St. Bonaventure history to win the A-10 Rookie of the Year award last season. Schmidt also recruited Tony Lee and Jeremy Chappell at Robert Morris who both won the NEC Rookie of the Year award in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

southpaw central

Out of St. Bonaventure's 12 scholarship players eligible to play this season, six of them are left-handed. Four of them come from the guard position (Adegboye, Davenport, Eleby, Leonard), while redshirt sophomore Da'Quan Cook and freshman Brett Roseboro give the Bonnies a different option on the left block.

two of a kind

The team leader in the three major statistical categories, senior JONATHAN HALL became just the second player in program history to lead the club in scoring, rebounding and assists in the same season in 2008-09. Hall's 12.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists were all team-bests. AHMAD SMITH was the only player prior to Hall to accomplish the feat in program history in 2004-05, with totals of 14.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists.

oh canada

ANDREW NICHOLSON more than lived up to the hype that crossed the Canadian border with him. The 6-foot-9 forward from Mississauga, Ontario won a program record six Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors en route to being named the Rookie of the Year in 2008-09. Nicholson averaged 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. He led all A-10 Rookies in six different categories, ranking second overall in the A-10 in both blocks and field goal percentage. On the season, Nicholson scored in double figures 21 times, including a team-high three 20-point outings, and had three double-doubles. Nicholson also led the team in both scoring and rebounding 10 times, including both in the same game on five occasions. Junior OGO ADEGBOYE will become the first player in program history to wear #00 this season. The 6-foot point guard comes to St. Bonaventure from Lamar Community College in Colorado where he led the Runnin' Lopes to a 27-11 record, the program's first-ever Region IX Championship and first-ever appearance at the NJCAA Division I Tournament.

bombs away

Senior CHRIS MATTHEWS made a living from beyond the arc in 2008-09. On Jan. 25, at Dayton, Matthews tied a school record with eight three-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points. The Washington, D.C. native's eight long range makes were the sixth of its kind in program history, while his 81 three-pointers were fourth in the single-season record books. Matthews made five or more threes in a game five times last season and his 81 trifectas were 58 more than the next highest Bonnie. Matthews' 3.06 trifectas per game in conference play ranked second amongst the league only leaders, while he ranked fourth in the A-10 overall at 2.7 long range field goals per game. Matthews accounted for 60 percent (81-of-135) of the team's three-pointers.

- St. Bonaventure

30'S THE NEW 20

Then-junior JONATHAN HALL'S 31-point game against Saint Louis on Feb. 25, marked the first time in 54 games that a St. Bonaventure player had reached the 30-point plateau. ZARRYON FERETI was the last player to accomplish the feat when he scored 32 points in the 2007-08 home opener against Binghamton. Hall was one of 10 players in the A-10 to score 30 points last season and just one of eight to do so in conference play.

BOARD WORK

After winning the battle on the glass just 12 times in 2007-08, the Brown and White responded by outrebounding 22 of their 30 opponents in 2008-09 for a +3.7 margin on the glass. The increased effort came by committee as six different players averaged 3.4 or more boards per game. St. Bonaventure was the only team in the A-10 to sport three players in the top 20 in rebounding. As a team, the Bonnies grabbed 10 or more offensive rebounds in 21 games, highlighted by a season-best 24 against Canisius and 20 against UMass. The Brown and White posted their biggest rebound margins of the season at Duquesne, owning the glass by a 52-27 edge, and against UMass, 48-28. The Bonnies also had three players with over 50 offensive boards.

home cooking

St. Bonaventure's four-game home win streak to close the season came just in the nick of time as it is endured a rough stretch on the road. Over their final four games at the Reilly Center, the Bonnies out-scored their opponents by nine points per game, holding a +10.3 margin on the glass. The Bonnies shot over 50 percent during the four-game stretch, led by junior JONATHAN HALL'S 16.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game averages. St. Bonaventure's four opponents didn't fare so well on the offensive end, combining for a 39 percent clip from the field, including 25 percent from long range.

JOHN OF ALL TRADES

JONATHAN HALL has shown he can do a little bit of everything. Hall ranked among the conference leaders in six different categories and up until the final week of the season was one of two players in the A-10 (Duquesne's Aaron Jackson) to rank in the top 20 in scoring, rebounding and assists. Hall led the team in scoring (12.9), rebounding (6.3) and assists (3.2) last season. The Miami, Fla. product also averaged a team-best 35.4 minutes per game and was second on the team in blocks (18) and steals (34). Hall also showed consistency at the offensive end, finishing in double figures in a team-high 22 games, while leading the team in scoring on eight occasions. built philly tough

Over a the last nine games of the 2008-09 season, guard MALCOLM ELEBY utilized his biggest asset en route posting the best numbers of his young career ... his size. The 6-foot-3 floor leader finished in double figure points in seven of those games, averaging 10.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists over that span. The Philadelphia, Pa. native made a living at taking smaller point guards to the hoop en route to sinking 31 of his last 39 from the free throw line. Eleby finished with a 1.5 assists/turnover ratio over the last nine games, highlighted by a career-high seven helpers against UMass and six at Temple.

six-pack

Freshman ANDREW NICHOLSON earned a program record six Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards, surpassing Alvin Lott's total of five in the 1983-84 season. Three of Nicholson's weekly citations came during conference play, where he has scored in double figures in 12 of 16 games.

swat team

Led by freshman ANDREW NICHOLSON, St. Bonaventure unleashed a new element to its aggressive style of defense in 2008-09 ... blocked shots. The Bonnies' 144 blocks were more than double the amount of the previous season. Nicholson was the catalyst for the turnaround, swatting away 81 shots - good for third on the program's single-season list. Nicholson's 81 blocks led all freshmen nationally, while his 2.7 per game ranked second in the A-10 and 11th nationally. Nicholson tied a program single-game record with eight rejections against Princeton, but broke that mark with nine blocked shots at Bucknell. Nicholson's nine blocks were the third-best single-game total in the NCAA in 2008-09. As a team, St. Bonaventure finished third in the A-10 and 30th nationally at 4.8 blocks per game.

road warriors

After winning one road game in 2007-08 and just five over the previous three seasons, St. Bonaventure posted a 7-6 mark in true road games last season. The Bonnies out-rebounded nine road opponents for a +5.2 margin and finished with a 47 percent shooting clip or better in seven of those games. The team's seven consecutive wins on the road to start the season was a school record, besting the start set by the 1967-68 NCAA Tournament team. St. Bonaventure's seven true road wins tied the single-season record set by the 2001-02 team, while the 1969-70 NCAA Final Four squad owns the record for most wins away from home in a season with 12.

look out below

Freshman ANDREW NICHOLSON made his presence felt around the rim all season. Nicholson's 81 blocks are highly-touted, but the 6-foot-9 forward also led the team with 37 dunks.

BALANCING ACT

St. Bonaventure's balanced scoring and rebounding attack gave its opponents fits in the film room. The Brown and White had six players average at least 7.0 points and six that averaged at least 3.4 boards per game. A total of eight different players led St. Bonaventure in either scoring, rebounding or assists in a game. The Bonnies received 12 20-point efforts from five different players. Those scoring outbursts came over 12 different games. All five starters hit for double-digit points in the team's win at Fordham and against UMass, and the Bonnies were 7-3 when at least four players accomplish the feat. Eight different players scored in double figures, while all 10 players had at least seven points in a game.

LEAN IN

St. Bonaventure has made huge strides under head coach Mark Schmidt. With seven new faces on last year's roster and five more this season, Schmidt has stressed the importance of getting his players to play as a team. The team adopted the motto of "Lean In" and wear wristbands with the motto on them. Schmidt did some of the best work of his head coaching career last season and led the Bonnies in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2005. Below is a look at some statistical improvements St. Bonaventure made from 2007-08 to 2008-09 and some of the significant accomplishments throughout the season. St. Bonaventure's 15 wins were the most since the 2001-02 season. The Bonnies made their first postseason appearance since 2005, when the league expanded to 14 teams. The team's four-game home A-10 win streak to close the season was the longest since the 2000-01 campaign. The Brown and White's 7-0 road start was a program record to begin a season and the longest road win streak in a single season. The seven road wins tied the single-season program record set in 2001-02. St. Bonaventure's nine non-conference wins were the most since 2001-02. St. Bonaventure earned the championship of the Garden State Classic at the beginning of the year with its win over Rutgers. Both teams finished the tournament with 3-1 records, but the Bonnies won the head-to-head match. The team's win over Rutgers was the program's first over a Big East school since Dec. 28, 2000, when it won at Connecticut. The Bonnies' four-game win streak to start December was the program's first since the 2001-02 campaign, while their two win streaks of three or more games are the first since that same season. The team's win at Fordham snapped a nine-game losing streak at historic Rose Hill Gymnasium and put an end to the Bonnies eight-game losing streak in A-10 road openers. The win at Richmond gave the Bonnies its first back-to-back road wins in A-10 play since 2001-02 and marked the first time since 1999-2000 they've won their first two A-10 road contests. Second-year head coach Mark Schmidt picked up his 100th career win at Fordham. The most wins by a second-year head coach in St. Bonaventure history is 18, set by Eddie Melvin in 1948-49 and Jim O'Brien in 1983-84. Freshman Andrew Nicholson was named the program's first Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and is just the eighth player in school history to make the All-Rookie team.

HEADCOACHMARKSCHMIDT BIO

With his blue collar work ethic now installed in the program, third-year head coach Mark Schmidt will continue his revival of St. Bonaventure basketball in 2009-10. Schmidt took over the tradition-rich program on April 10, 2007, becoming the 19th head coach in school history. In just two short years, Schmidt and the Bonnies have re-energized the Bona faithful and basketball-passionate Western New York community. In 2008-09, St. Bonaventure finished with a 15-15 overall record – the program’s best mark in the last six years. Included in that season was a program record seven consecutive road wins to start the season and the program’s first trip back to the Atlantic 10 Tournament since 2005. Team team’s seven true road wins also tied the record set by the 2001-02 club.

Key to the quick turnaround in 2008-09 was the team’s ability to buy into Schmidt’s emphasis on playing hard for 40 minutes. That philosophy paid big dividends, as the Bonnies out-rebounded 22 of their 30 opponents en route to ranking in the top five in the conference in all three major rebounding statistics. Also a direct result of Schmidt’s style of play was the team’s 70.8 points per game – the most by a Bonaventure team since 2002-03. During the 2008-09 season, freshman Andrew Nicholson was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-American by CollegeHoopsNet.com. Nicholson is the third player in Schmidt’s eight-year head coaching career to win a conference Rookie of the Year accolade. Junior Jonathan Hall also flourished under Schmidt’s runand-gun style, becoming the second player in program history to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists in the same season.

Additionally, Schmidt achieved a personal milestone of his own midway through the season, as he earned his 100th career win in the team’s 78-65 win at Fordham in the A-10 opener. Schmidt’s intense personality rubbed off on everyone involved with the program in his first season, including the senior class of Zarryon Fereti, Michael Lee and Tyler Relph who flourished under just one season of Schmidt’s guidance. All three posted career years on the court and experienced success of the court by graduating in May. Both Fereti and Lee worked their way into the professional ranks overseas, while Relph finished as the NCAA leader in free throw percentage. Schmidt served as the head coach at Robert Morris for six seasons prior to coming to St. Bonaventure. There, he inherited a program that had managed just a 7-22 record in the season before his arrival. Schmidt quickly turned things around, leading the Colonials to the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinals in 2004 and 2006. During his six seasons at RMU, he had an overall record of 82-90, including a 15-14 mark in 2005-06, the program's first winning season since 2000. Schmidt turned the Colonials into a year-in and year-out contender in the conference, posting a 58-52 mark in league play highlighted by four seasons of 10 or more league wins. Schmidt coached six NEC All-Conference players at RMU, along with three All-Rookie team selections and one Conference Rookie of the Year in Jeremy Chappell in 2006. Over the last two seasons, Schmidt saw his former recruit Tony Lee and Chappell garner back-to-back NEC Player of the Year accolades in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Prior to Robert Morris, Schmidt spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Xavier University under head coach Skip Prosser. Schmidt served as the program's top recruiter, landing future NBA players Torraye Braggs (Houston Rockets), Lionel Chalmers (Minnesota Timberwolves), James Posey (Miami Heat), Romain Sato (San Antonio Spurs) and David West (New Orleans Hornets). With most of his coaching responsibilities centered around the post players, Schmidt helped develop West into a threetime Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and the National Player of the Year in 2003. During his stay in Cincinnati, Ohio, Schmidt helped lead the Musketeers to four NCAA Tournament appearances and the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) twice. Xavier claimed its first-ever Atlantic 10 West Division title in 1996-97 and both the West Division and Coaching Experience (20 Seasons): • 2007-Present Head Coach, St. Bonaventure University • 2001-06 Head Coach, Robert Morris University • 1994-01 Assistant Coach, Xavier University • 1993-94 Assistant Coach, Loyola (Md.) College • 1991-93 Assistant Coach, Penn State • 1989-91 Assistant Coach, St. Michael's College Years as a Head Coach (9th Season) Overall Record: 105-127 Record at St. Bonaventure: 23-37 (2 Years) Record at Robert Morris: 82-90 (6 Years)

tournament championships in 1997-98. In 1997, Xavier defeated Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season with the school's highest Associated Press ranking at No. 13. The Musketeers made it to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden in 1999, finishing third, the school's best finish since 1958. Schmidt served as an assistant under Prosser at Loyola College during the 1993-94 season. He helped guide the Greyhounds to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title and the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. From 1991-93, Schmidt was an assistant at Penn State University under Bruce Parkhill. The Nittany Lions went 21-8 in 1992 and appeared in the NIT. Schmidt's coaching career began with a two-year stint as an assistant at St. Michael's College in Vermont. Schmidt played four seasons at Boston College, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration and management with a concentration in marketing. In his freshman season under head coach Tom Davis, the Eagles went 22-10 and made the NCAA Elite Eight. Schmidt played his final three years under the guidance of head coach Gary Williams. Boston College advanced to the NIT in 1984 and the NCAA Sweet Sixteen the other two years. A native of North Attleboro, Mass., Schmidt and his wife Anita have three sons, Nicholas (14), Derek (12) and Michael (9). - St. Bonaventure

EXHIBITION GAME

ST. BONAVENTURE 82 Mansfield 74

Nov. 6, 2009 at the Reilly Center ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Behind a game-high 29 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Andrew Nicholson (pictured), the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team held off a feisty Mansfield club for a 82-74 wire-to-wire exhibition win on Friday evening at the Reilly Center. Bonaventure shot a blistering 57 percent (2747) from the floor and made 25-of-34 from the charity stripe. The Bonnies 21 assists came at the cost of 15 turnovers, but it was the 45 second half points allowed that troubled Schmidt. “It was a good first game for us and give Mansfield all the credit … they kept on working. I thought there were spurts where we looked good and there were times where we didn’t,” said head coach Mark Schmidt. “In order to be successful we need to defend and rebound and that’s something we didn’t do well tonight.”
