Opening Tip Overview

Series History

~ St. Bonaventure will look to extend its streak of 14 consecutive wins over Big 4 rivals when it hosts Niagara Friday night. The 14 straight victories is the longest such streak in the history of Big 4 women’s basketball. Furthermore, Bona has won 19 straight games at home against Niagara. The Purple Eagles have never beaten the Bonnies in the Reilly Center since SBU joined Division I in 1986-87, and their last win at the RC came on Feb. 21, 1981, 64-45. ~ The Bonnies have not lost to a Big 4 school since Nov. 19, 2006, when the University at Buffalo defeated them at the St. Bonaventure Shootout, 6759. Bona won at Canisius earlier this year, 74-58, and is coming off a 76-45 triumph of UB last Saturday. ~ Defeating its three local rivals by double figures has been a constant theme throughout Bona’s 14-game winning streak, as those victories have come by a commanding average of 18.6 points per game. Only three of those wins

Head Coaching Matchup

~ That task could be a little more difficult against Niagara as Bonaventure is

doubtful to have senior Megan Van Tatenhove, who has started 58 straight games. A Preseason Atlantic 10 First Team selection and currently the team’s second-leading scorer (12.2) and rebounder (5.6), Van Tatenhove hit her head on the floor while diving for a loose ball in the first half last Saturday against Buffalo.

~ St. Bonaventure is holding its opponents to just 50.6 points per game, ranking it 15th in the nation and second in the Atlantic 10. However, over the last four games the Bonnies have locked down even more than usual, allowing just 43.6 points per outing, including the last three games in which they have not allowed an opponent to shoot higher than 26.4 percent from the floor. Also in those last three games, the Bonnies have not allowed their opponents to reach the 20-point mark in the first half. ~ The Bonnies have a scoring margin of +13 on the year – one of only two A-10 teams with a positive double-figure scoring margin. SBU averages 63.6 points per game and allows just 50.6. South Carolina is the only school in the nation with a greater scoring margin which averages fewer points per game. The Gamecocks score just 61 per game and allow 46.2 to create their +14.8 margin. ~ Sophomore CeCe Dixon is coming off her fourth double-figure scoring outing of the year with an 11-point performance against Buffalo. That is her fourth double-figure scoring game this season already, as last year she reached that plateau just once. Dixon is the third-leading scorer on the team at 7.9 per game, and has scored 71 points this year after netting 99 all of last year.

Inside

the

Through nine games, the Bonnies are tied for their second-best start in program history with the 1992-93 team which also began 8-1. The 2009-10 squad – which commenced its campaign at 11-0 – is the only club with a faster start than the 2011-12 Bonnies.

Numbers

Senior Jessica Jenkins – who is closing in on the school and conference 3-pointers made record – is currently on one of the best shooting streaks of her career. Jenkins has made 13 3-pointers in the last three games, tied for the second most over a three-game stretch in her career. Last year she hit 14 3’s during a three-game run, and in her sophomore season she knocked down 13 over a three-game stretch.

By leading the A-10 in 3-point shooting percentage four straight years, St. Bonaventure is the only school in the history of Division I women’s basketball to lead a conference in that category for four straight seasons. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 38.5 percent from 3-point range; in 2008-09 they shot 36.4 percent and in 2007-08 they also shot 36.4 percent. No other school in the A-10 has accomplished this feat more than two years in a row.

Three Times The Charity

St. Bonaventure boasts three of the best five free-throw shooters in A-10 history in terms of made free throws in a career. Hilary Waltman, who graduated in 1999, ranks second on the all-time conference list with 588, Sue Shay, ’92, ranks third with 524 and Dana Mitchell, ’10, ranks fifth with 474. By owning three of the top five free throw shooters in a respective conference, Bonaventure is the only school in Division I history which holds that honor.

3-Point U

With 36 more made 3-pointers this season, Jessica Jenkins will not only own the program record in that category, but also the A-10 record. Jenkins currently has 256 made 3’s in her career. The school – and conference – record is 291, held by Suzie Dailer. Dailer, who played at Bona’s from 1992-95, actually shares the all-time league mark with Cathy Jones of George Washington. Additionally, 2006 SBU grad Stefanie Collins currently ranks third on that list with 288 3’s. If Jenkins hits 36 more 3’s, St. Bonaventure will become the only school in the nation with three of the top four 3-point shooters (in terms of made field goals) in any respective conference in women’s basketball Division I history.

Among The Nation’s Elite

St. Bonaventure finished the 2011-12 campaign ranked among the nation’s best in several statistical categories. The Bonnies ranked in the top-10 in 3-point field-goal percentage (6th/38%) and turnovers per game (7th/13.8 per game). The Brown and White also ranked inside the top-50 in three other categories: scoring defense (23rd/55.2 per game); free-throw percentage (31st/74.4%); 3-point field goals per game (44th/6.8 per game).

A ‘Bona’

fide

League

The A-10 finished the 2010-11 campaign ranked 7th among the 31 Division I conferences in the official NCAA RPI Report, ranking behind only the “Big 6” – Big 12, ACC, BIG EAST, SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10 (now Pac-12). However, no conference except the BIG EAST had MORE teams finish in the top 80 of the RPI than the A-10. The A-10 had eight schools in the top-80 – the same amount as the Big 12, Big Ten, ACC and SEC. St. Bonaventure finished 70th, and it was joined by Xavier (10), Temple (35), Charlotte (49), Dayton (50), Saint Joseph’s (68) and Richmond (77).

1,000-Point Duo

Senior Jessica Jenkins became the 19th member of the 1,000 Point Club during a 23-point performance against West Virginia Nov. 18. Jenkins joined classmate Megan Van Tatenhove on the list as the Wisconsin native became the 18th member of the club last year in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.

Defensive Prowess

For the second consecutive year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in scoring defense. SBU held its opponents to an average of 55.2 points per game, one season after leading the A-10 at 54.1 points per outing. While five other schools in history have led the conference in scoring defense back-toback years, no school has been as stringent as the Brown and White. The 54.6 combined scoring defense average the last two years by the Bonnies is THE BEST by any school in consecutive years in the history of the A-10.

Senior Jessica Jenkins scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, junior Chelsea Bowker tallied 11 and sophomore CeCe Dixon also netted 11. For the 14th time in her career, Jenkins hit exactly five 3-pointers in a game, finishing 5-of-9 from behind the arc. The 31-point win is the largest margin of victory in series history, which spans 23 games. The previous record was 24 in a 71-47 Bonaventure win on Dec. 6,1983. The win is the largest for the Bonnies since they secured a 34-point triumph over Canisius last year. After not scoring for more than five minutes and having the Bulls trim their deficit to just six, 24-18, the Bonnies responded with a burst in the final 2:16 of the first half, fueled by consecutive 3-pointers from Jenkins, Dixon and Jenkins once again to take a 40-18 halftime lead. The 40 points are the most by the Bonnies in the first half of a game this year, and marks the third straight game the club has held an opponent below 20 points in the opening stanza. Following two baskets by the Bulls to open the second-half scoring, Bona rattled off 14 straight to create what was then its largest lead of the afternoon at 54-22. Bowker keyed the run with two 3-pointers, interjected among six points from classmate Alaina Walker.

Leaders Once Again

For the second straight year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, connecting at a 74.4-percent clip. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 79.8 percent from the charity stripe, and that percentage ranks as the second highest in conference history behind only the 81.5 percent Saint Joseph’s shot in 2000-01. St. Bona is the first school to defend its free-throw percentage crown since Saint Joe’s in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Furthermore, last season was the eighth time in history that the Bonnies have led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, and that is the most of any school in the history of the conference.

Bombs Away

As a team, St. Bonaventure made 16 3-pointers in its regular-season finale last year against Charlotte, paced by a program-record nine from Jessica Jenkins. That total ranks as the second highest in the history of the A-10 in a single game, bested only by the 17 Xavier knocked down against McNeese State in 2007. However, in conference games only, the 16 3’s by the Bonnies beat the previous record of 14 held by Richmond in a 2008 game against Massachusetts.

Inside-Out Returning Combo

Senior forward Megan Van Tatenhove returns as the second-leading scorer in the A-10 after averaging 14.5 points per game last year, while senior guard Jessica Jenkins returns as the leading 3-point shooter in the conference after knocking down 100 3’s last campaign. However, in conference games only, Van Tatenhove averaged 16.2 points per game, tying her with Dayton’s Justine Raterman as the league’s highest-returning scorer in that category. Jenkins averaged 13.1 points per outing, making her and Van Tatenhove one of just two sets

5

of returning teammates in the A-10 who averaged 13 or more points per game last year. The other is the senior duo of Shey Peddy (14.1) and Kristen McCarthy (13.2) from Temple.

No Freebies, No Problem

St. Bonaventure was the only school in the A-10 last year to play a game and hold its opponent without a made free throw. Against UTSA on Dec. 21, the Roadrunners attempted just three free throws – also a season low for an opponent by an A-10 team – and made none of them. On the other side, the Bonnies made 14-of-20 en route to a 46-37 win – the fewest points the club held a team to all season.

Did You Know?

St. Bonaventure is one of only three schools in A-10 history with two players who have scored 2,000 or more points. Hilary Waltman, 1996-99, checks in at No. 7 on the all-time list with 2,106 points, while Dana Mitchell, 2007-10, is No. 11 with 2,011 points. Xavier, which occupies the No. 4 and 5 slots, and Saint Joseph’s, which owns the No. 3 and 8 positions, are the only other A-10 schools with multiple 2,000-point scorers.

Leader

by a

Mile

Jessica Jenkins returns as the leading 3-point shooter in the A-10, and she’s the leading returner by a long stretch. Jenkins hit a program-record 100 3’s last year to lead the conference. The next closest returning 3-point shooter in the league is Duquesne’s Alex Gensler who knocked down 67 3-pointers last season – 33 fewer than Jenkins.

Downtown Clinic

St. Bonaventure set a program record by making 224 3-pointers last season, shattering the old mark of 192 set during the 2008-09 season. That total ranks second in the all-time A-10 record book, behind only the 256 made

by Xavier during the 2000-01 season. Additionally, the club connected at a 38.2-percent clip (224-587), making it the secondhighest 3-point field-goal percentage season in program history. The 2009-10 year with a 38.5-percent clip was the only higher season.

NYC Pipeline

The 2011-12 Bonnies boast four players from New York City, all from Queens and Harlem: freshman Tatiana Wilson; sophomores CeCe Dixon and Doris Ortega; redshirt senior Armelia Horton. Additionally, Dixon, Ortega and Horton all went to the same high school, Murry Bergtraum.

League Leaders

Megan Van Tatenhove scored a careerhigh 35 points against Dayton last year, a total which ranked tied for the highestscoring performance by an individual in the league last season. Additionally, Jessica Jenkins’s nine 3-pointers against Charlotte, and her eight 3-pointer performance against Duquesne, ranked as the top-two performances by anyone in the A-10 last year in terms of 3-pointers made in a game.

A Number Says A Lot

46.3 percent of 12th-year head coach Jim Crowley’s wins at St. Bonaventure have come in the last three years. Crowley, who took over prior to the 2000-01 season, has won 75 of

However, current redshirt senior Armelia Horton supassed that total with a win in the season opener against No. 25/rv St. John’s and now is the all-time winningest player in St. Bona history, 2011-12 Bonnies currently owning 93 wins. Tim Waterman, who played for the men’s team from 1975Top Individual 79, previously held the record with 81 wins.

Career Afternoon

Senior Jessica Jenkins established a career high in points when she netted 33 in the regular-season finale last year in a win against Charlotte. As part of those 33 points, the Marion, Ohio product set a program record by knocking down nine 3-pointers. Not only did that give her the school record, but it also tied her with three others for the A-10 record for made 3’s in a game.

Streaking

When St. Bonaventure opens A-10 play in January, it will do so having the second-longest unbeaten streak in the league. After getting off to a 5-5 start in the conference last year, the Bonnies won all four of their final A-10 contests to finish tied for 3rd with a 9-5 mark. Xavier, which concluded its A-10 slate unblemished at 14-0, is the only school which has a longer unbeaten streak in league play.

Starting Quartet

With a 79-55 win against Morgan State on Nov. 20, Bonaventure got off to a 4-0 start for the sixth time in school history. Five of those six occasions have come in the last seven years. The only other season a Bona team got off to a 4-0 start was the 1992-93 club.

Van Tatenhove has started 58 consecutive contests, dating back to the middle of the 2009-10 year.

Closing In On Another Record

With 11 more rebounds this year, Megan Van Tatenhove will become just the ninth member of the 1,000 Point & 500 Rebound Club. The Wisconsin native scored her 1,000th career point last season, and currently has 1,160 career points. She led the Bonnies with 185 rebounds last year, increasing her career total to 439 entering the 2011-12 campaign.

National TV Exposure

St. Bonaventure will appear on national TV two times during the regular season, as both occasions will air on CBS Sports Network. The first comes in a contest at La Salle on Jan. 28 at 1 p.m., and the second will be at home against perennial power Xavier on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. The matchup with the Musketeers will also be Senior Day for the program.

The Bonnies have committed just 115 turnovers on the year – fifth-best in the nation – but they are even more stingy with the ball when the game is on the line. Of those 115 giveaways, 72 have come in the first half while 43 have come in the final 20 minutes. Additionally, in the final five minutes the Bonnies have committed just five turnovers, and in their five road in the final five minutes, they have given the ball away just one time.

Currently 11th in the nation at 78 percent as a team from the free throw line, the Bonnies are 31-41 (75.6 percent) in the final five minutes of games while their opponents are just 20-32 (62.5 percent). Even more impressive, the Bonnies are 18-24 (75 percent) from the line in the last five minutes of their road games, while those home teams are just 12-21 (57.1 percent).

RPI Report #2 (Through Dec. 12) This Week: 27 Last Week: 19 Schedule Strength: 114 vs. 1-25: 0-1 vs. 26-50: 0-0 vs. 51-100: 3-0 vs. 101-200: 4-0 vs. 201-342: 1-0 A-10 Ranking: 9/33

St. Bonaventure is one of only four schools in the nation with five road wins, and one of only two (Bradley) which is undefeated on the road with at least five victories. The Bonnies – for the second week in a row – are the highest ranked A-10 team. As a conference, the A-10 has won eight games against BCS schools, and Bonaventure is responsible for three of them (St. John’s, West Virginia, Indiana).

Road Warriors

A-10 Prognostications

With its win against Binghamton on Dec. 3, St. Bonaventure extended its road record to 5-0 to start the 2011-12 season for the first time in program history. Bonaventure has had a winning road record in each of the last four seasons. The only other year beside the last four that happened was when the 1991-92 club went 7-6 away from the Reilly Center. Over the last four years, Bona is an impressive 39-25 on the road.

Despite returning nearly all its scoring, St. Bonaventure was picked to finish 6th in the A-10 in preseason voting conducted by the league’s 14 head coaches. Senior Megan Van Tatenhove – who enters the year as the A-10’s second-leading returning scorer – was named to the Preseason First Team. Classmate Jessica Jenkins – who needs just 36 more 3-pointers for the conference record – was tabbed to the Preseason Third Team.

Program History

Tough Sledding

The win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12 was the program’s first ever road victory against a nationally ranked team and just the third over a nationally ranked team in school history. The other two triumphs both came at home – against No. 14/13 George Washington, 63-60, on Feb. 16, 2008, and opposite No. 21/24 Michigan State, 63-52, on Dec. 7, 2008. The win over the Red Storm was also the program’s first over a BCS opponent since it won at Wisconsin, 56-51, in the Third Round of the WNIT on March 26, 2009.

Good

from the

A challenging non-conference slate precludes the always-difficult A-10 docket as the Bonnies will face at least eight teams – possibly nine depending on tournament outcomes – which made postseason appearances last year, including three which advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Familiar Foes

Of St. Bonaventure’s 15 non-conference games, 11 are against teams the Bonnies squared off with last year. SBU went 7-4 in those games, but this year it has avenged all those losses as it defeated No. 25/rv St. John’s in the season opener, won at West Virginia, 56-48, downed Morgan State, 79-55, and defeated Indiana, 65-45.

Start

With its win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12, the Brown and White has now won seven straight season openers, dating back to a 73-70 loss to Colgate to kick off the 2004-05 year. Furthermore, St. Bona has not lost a road game to start the season since head coach Jim Crowley’s first year at the helm of the Bonnies in 2000-01 – a 9775 loss against Cincinnati. The current streak of seven consecutive season-opening victories is the longest in program history.

Welcome

to the

Bona Family

The 2011-12 women’s basketball season is just underway, but the team is already building for the future as five players have signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Bonnies beginning in the 2012-13 season. The five who committed to join head coach Jim Crowley’s club are: Kelcie Rombach (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), Gabby Richmond (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park), Katie Healy (Lancaster, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), Nyla Rueter (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown) and Hannah Little (Rochester Hills, Mich./Auburn Hills Avondale).

The Gang’s All Back

St. Bonaventure returns all five starters and 92 percent of its offense from a team which went 21-12 and finished 9-5 in the Atlantic 10, advancing to its third straight Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Bonnies finished tied for 3rd in the conference – their best-ever showing in the A-10 – and won 20+ games for the third consecutive season. Bonaventure is now one of just five A-10 schools which has won 20 or more games three straight years, joining Temple, Xavier, Dayton and Duquesne.
