Date: 12.3.11 | Site: Events Center (5,134) | Series: St. Bonaventure leads, 5-0 LAST MEETING: Nov. 12, 2010 -- St. Bonaventure 62 Binghamton 59 (OT) VIDEO / AUDIO / LIVESTATS: BUBearcats.com

~ For the fifth consecutive season, St. Bonaventure and Binghamton will meet when the two teams take to the Events Center floor Saturday afternoon. The Bonnies hold a 5-0 all-time series advantage, but escaped last year’s meeting with a 62-59 overtime win at the Reilly Center. ~ Bonaventure will be looking to set a program record against the Bearcats as it seeks its first-ever 5-0 road start to a season. The 2009-10 club was the only other Bona squad in history to begin a campaign 4-0 on the road, but lost in its fifth attempt at No. 16/20 Michigan State.

~ The game against Binghamton will be the fifth rematch for the Bonnies of games played last year, as they are already 4-0 in such contests, owning wins against St. John’s, West Virginia, Morgan State and Kent State. Of the 15 non-league games Bonaventure will play, 11 are rematches from the 2010-11 season. The Brown and White went 7-4 in those games, but has avenged three of the losses (St. John’s, WVU, Morgan State) already this year.

~ After leading the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring defense each of the last two years, St. Bonaventure is on its way to once again defending that title as it ranks second in the league, allowing just 55.2 points per game. Both of Binghamton’s losses this year have come when scoring fewer than 60 points – a level that the Bonnies have allowed just one opponent (Delaware, 61) to reach all season. ~ For the third straight game, St. Bonaventure could be without starting point guard Armelia Horton, who is questionable. The redshirt senior suffered a head injury in practice on Nov. 26, but the bench has given the Bonnies a much-needed lift in her absence. In the win against Kent State on Wednesday, sophomore CeCe Dixon started in place of Horton and scored a game-high 14 points – 10 of which came in the second half. Additionally, junior Chelsea Bowker kept the Bonnies in the game in the first half, scoring 11 of her 12 in the opening stanza. ~ St. Bona is coming off a 60-51 win at Kent State Wednesday night despite turning the ball over a season-high 17 times. Entering the contest, the Bonnies ranked third in the nation in that category, committing just 11.8 giveaways per outing, and hadn’t turned the ball over more than 13 times in any game.

Three Times The Charity

St. Bonaventure boasts three of the best five free-throw shooters in A-10 history in terms of made free throws in a career. Hilary Waltman, who graduated in 1999, ranks second on the all-time conference list with 588, Sue Shay, ’92, ranks third with 524 and Dana Mitchell, ’10, ranks fifth with 474. By owning three of the top five free throw shooters in a respective conference, Bonaventure is the only school in Division I history which holds that honor.

3-Point U

With 49 more made 3-pointers this season, Jessica Jenkins will not only own the program record in that category, but also the A-10 record. Jenkins currently has 243 made 3’s in her career. The school – and conference – record is 291, held by Suzie Dailer. Dailer, who played at Bona’s from 1992-95, actually shares the all-time league mark with Cathy Jones of George Washington. Additionally, 2006 SBU grad Stefanie Collins currently ranks third on that list with 288 3’s. If Jenkins hits 49 more 3’s, St. Bonaventure will become the only school in the nation with three of the top four 3-point shooters (in terms of made field goals) in any respective conference in women’s basketball Division I history.

Among The Nation’s Elite

St. Bonaventure finished the 2011-12 campaign ranked among the nation’s best in several statistical categories. The Bonnies ranked in the top-10 in 3-point field-goal percentage (6th/38%) and turnovers per game (7th/13.8 per game). The Brown and White also ranked inside the top-50 in three other categories: scoring defense (23rd/55.2 per game); free-throw percentage (31st/74.4%); 3-point field goals per game (44th/6.8 per game).

A ‘Bona’ fide League

The A-10 finished the 2010-11 campaign ranked 7th among the 31 Division I conferences in the official NCAA RPI Report, ranking behind only the “Big 6” – Big 12, ACC, BIG EAST, SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10 (now Pac-12). However, no conference except the BIG EAST had MORE teams finish in the top 80 of the RPI than the A-10. The A-10 had eight schools in the top-80 – the same amount as the Big 12, Big Ten, ACC and SEC. St. Bonaventure finished 70th, and it was joined by Xavier (10), Temple (35), Charlotte (49), Dayton (50), Saint Joseph’s (68) and Richmond (77).

1,000-Point Duo

Senior Jessica Jenkins became the 19th member of the 1,000 Point Club during a 23-point performance against West Virginia Nov. 18. Jenkins joined classmate Megan Van Tatenhove on the list as the Wisconsin native became the 18th member of the club last year in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.

Defensive Prowess

For the second consecutive year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in scoring defense. SBU held its opponents to an average of 55.2 points per game, one season after leading the A-10 at 54.1 points per outing. While five other schools in history have led the conference in scoring defense back-toback years, no school has been as stringent as the Brown and White. The 54.6 combined scoring defense average the last two years by the Bonnies is THE BEST by any school in consecutive years in the history of the A-10.

Trailing 45-44 with 8:33 left, the Bonnies went on a gamechanging 12-0 run over four-and-a-half minutes to open up a 56-45 advantage that they wouldn’t relinquish. The run started with a Jessica Jenkins’ lay-in and closed with a pair of free throws from senior Megan Van Tatenhove. Dixon, starting in place of injured senior Armelia Horton, scored eight of Bona’s first 12 second-half points to keep the Bonnies in the contest. Van Tatenhove finished with 13 points, sophomore Chelsea Bowker scored 11 of her 12 in the first half and senior Jenkins didn’t hit a 3-pointer but still finished with 10 points to round out the Bona double-figure scoring. The win was the fourth road triumph for the Bonnies already this year, setting a program record for most road victories in the month of November. Additionally, it is just the second time they have started a campaign 4-0 away from the Reilly Center since joining the Division I ranks prior to the 1986-87 season. Kent State jumped out to a 14-4 lead to begin the game, but the Bonnies were able to chip away and took their first lead, 22-21, at the 7:24 mark of the opening half on a Jenkins’ floater in the lane. Despite turning the ball over 10 times in the opening frame, Bonaventure held a 31-28 lead at halftime.

Leaders Once Again

For the second straight year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, connecting at a 74.4-percent clip. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 79.8 percent from the charity stripe, and that percentage ranks as the second highest in conference history behind only the 81.5 percent Saint Joseph’s shot in 2000-01. St. Bona is the first school to defend its free-throw percentage crown since Saint Joe’s in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Furthermore, last season was the eighth time in history that the Bonnies have led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, and that is the most of any school in the history of the conference.

Bombs Away

As a team, St. Bonaventure made 16 3-pointers in its regular-season finale last year against Charlotte, paced by a program-record nine from Jessica Jenkins. That total ranks as the second highest in the history of the A-10 in a single game, bested only by the 17 Xavier knocked down against McNeese State in 2007. However, in conference games only, the 16 3’s by the Bonnies beat the previous record of 14 held by Richmond in a 2008 game against Massachusetts.

Inside-Out Returning Combo

Senior forward Megan Van Tatenhove returns as the second-leading scorer in the A-10 after averaging 14.5 points per game last year, while senior guard Jessica Jenkins returns as the leading 3-point shooter in the conference after knocking down 100 3’s last campaign. However, in conference games only, Van Tatenhove averaged 16.2 points per game, tying her with Dayton’s Justine Raterman as the league’s highest-returning scorer in that category. Jenkins averaged 13.1 points per outing, making

5

her and Van Tatenhove one of just two sets of returning teammates in the A-10 who averaged 13 or more points per game last year. The other is the senior duo of Shey Peddy (14.1) and Kristen McCarthy (13.2) from Temple.

No Freebies, No Problem

St. Bonaventure was the only school in the A-10 last year to play a game and hold its opponent without a made free throw. Against UTSA on Dec. 21, the Roadrunners attempted just three free throws – also a season low for an opponent by an A-10 team – and made none of them. On the other side, the Bonnies made 14-of-20 en route to a 46-37 win – the fewest points the club held a team to all season.

Did You Know?

St. Bonaventure is one of only three schools in A-10 history with two players who have scored 2,000 or more points. Hilary Waltman, 1996-99, checks in at No. 7 on the all-time list with 2,106 points, while Dana Mitchell, 2007-10, is No. 11 with 2,011 points. Xavier, which occupies the No. 4 and 5 slots, and Saint Joseph’s, which owns the No. 3 and 8 positions, are the only other A-10 schools with multiple 2,000-point scorers.

Leader by a Mile

Jessica Jenkins returns as the leading 3-point shooter in the A-10, and she’s the leading returner by a long stretch. Jenkins hit a program-record 100 3’s last year to lead the conference. The next closest returning 3-point shooter in the league is Duquesne’s Alex Gensler who knocked down 67 3-pointers last season – 33 fewer than Jenkins.

Downtown Clinic

St. Bonaventure set a program record by making 224 3-pointers last season, shattering the old mark of 192 set during the 2008-09 season. That total ranks second in the all-time

Game NoteS

A-10 record book, behind only the 256 made by Xavier during the 2000-01 season. Additionally, the club connected at a 38.2-percent clip (224-587), making it the secondhighest 3-point field-goal percentage season in program history. The 2009-10 year with a 38.5-percent clip was the only higher season.

NYC Pipeline

The 2011-12 Bonnies boast four players from New York City, all from Queens and Harlem: freshman Tatiana Wilson; sophomores CeCe Dixon and Doris Ortega; redshirt senior Armelia Horton. Additionally, Dixon, Ortega and Horton all went to the same high school, Murry Bergtraum.

League Leaders

Megan Van Tatenhove scored a careerhigh 35 points against Dayton last year, a total which ranked tied for the highestscoring performance by an individual in the league last season. Additionally, Jessica Jenkins’s nine 3-pointers against Charlotte, and her eight 3-pointer performance against Duquesne, ranked as the top-two performances by anyone in the A-10 last year in terms of 3-pointers made in a game.

However, current redshirt senior Armelia Horton supassed that total with a win in the season opener against No. 25/RV St. John’s and now is the 2011-12 Bonnies all-time winningest player in St. Bona history, currently owning 90 wins. Tim Waterman, Top Individual who played for the men’s team from 197579, previously held the record with 81 wins. Game Performances prior to the 2000-01 season, has won 72 of his 159 games at Bonaventure since the start of the 2008-09 year. Furthermore, Crowley is just two wins shy of 200 for his career.

Career Afternoon

Senior Jessica Jenkins established a career high in points when she netted 33 in the regular-season finale last year in a win against Charlotte. As part of those 33 points, the Marion, Ohio product set a program record by knocking down nine 3-pointers. Not only did that give her the school record, but it also tied her with three others for the A-10 record for made 3’s in a game.

The 2011 A-10 All Championship Team selection has led Dayton in scoring in each of her three seasons and currently has 1,399 points, seventh all-time at UD. Raterman was invited to participate in the 2011 USA Basketball’s World University Games but had to decline due to her scheduled ACL surgery.

A-10 Prognostications

Road Warriors

Despite returning nearly all its scoring, St. Bonaventure was picked to finish 6th in the A-10 in preseason voting conducted by the league’s 14 head coaches. Senior Megan Van Tatenhove – who enters the year as the A-10’s second-leading returning scorer – was named to the preseason First Team. Classmate Jessica Jenkins – who needs just 49 more 3-pointers for the conference record – was tabbed to the preseason Third Team.

With its win against Kent State on Nov. 30, St. Bonaventure extended its road record to 4-0 to start the 2011-12 season. Bonaventure has had a winning road record in each of the last four seasons. The only other year beside the last four that happened was when the 1991-92 club went 7-6 away from the Reilly Center. Over the last four years, Bona is an impressive 38-25 on the road.

Program History

Tough Sledding

The win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12 was the program’s first ever road victory against a nationally ranked team and just the third over a nationally ranked team in school history. The other two triumphs both came at home – against No. 14/13 George Washington, 63-60, on Feb. 16, 2008, and opposite No. 21/24 Michigan State, 63-52, on Dec. 7, 2008. The win over the Red Storm was also the program’s first over a BCS opponent since it won at Wisconsin, 56-51, in the Third Round of the WNIT on March 26, 2009.

A challenging non-conference slate precludes the always-difficult A-10 docket as the Bonnies will face at least eight teams – possibly nine depending on tournament outcomes – which made postseason appearances last year, including three which advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Familiar Foes

Of St. Bonaventure’s 15 non-conference games, 11 are against teams the Bonnies squared off with last year. Bona went 7-4 in those games, and has already avenged three of those losses as it defeated No. 25/ rv St. John’s in the season opener at Carnesecca Arena, won at West Virginia, 56-48, in Morgantown and downed Morgan State, 79-55.

Good from the Start

With its win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12, the Brown and White has now won seven straight season openers, dating back to a 73-70 loss to Colgate to kick off the 2004-05 year. Furthermore, St. Bona has not lost a road game to start the season since head coach Jim Crowley’s first year at the helm of the Bonnies in 2000-01 – a 9775 loss against Cincinnati. The current streak of seven consecutive season-opening victories is the longest in program history.

NCAA.com: MoneyBall for Basketball Learn how head coach Jim Crowley used the baseball principle of Moneyball to turn around the women’s basketball program and place it on the precipice of previously unseen success in this NCAA.com feature story.

The Gang’s All Back

St. Bonaventure returns all five starters and 92 percent of its offense from a team which went 21-12 and finished 9-5 in the Atlantic 10, advancing to its third straight Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Bonnies finished tied for 3rd in the conference – their best-ever showing in the A-10 – and won 20+ games for the third consecutive season. Bonaventure is now one of just five A-10 schools which has won 20 or more games three straight years, joining Temple, Xavier, Dayton and Duquesne.

Welcome to the Bona Family

The 2011-12 women’s basketball season is just underway, but the team is already building for the future as five players have signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Bonnies beginning in the 201213 season. The five who committed to join head coach Jim Crowley’s club are: Kelcie Rombach (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), Gabby Richmond (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park), Katie Healy (Lancaster, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), Nyla Rueter (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown) and Hannah Little (Rochester Hills, Mich./Auburn Hills Avondale).

Senior sharpshooter Jessica Jenkins became the 19th member of the 1,000 Point Club during a 23-point performance at West Virginia on Nov. 18.
