oPeninG tiP St. Bonaventure tips off its 2012-13 season at home against Bethune-Cookman Friday evening. Based in Daytona Beach, Fla., the Wildcats play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Banner season Honored St. Bonaventure’s unprecedented 2011-12 season will be celebrated during a ceremony approximately 15 minutes prior to tip-off tonight, when banners honoring the team’s first Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament Second Round appearance from last season will be unveiled to the public for the first time. sizzlin’ Home cooKin’ Over the last 45 years – since 1967 when the Reilly Center hosted its first complete season – St. Bonaventure is a dominant 43-2 in home openers, 42-3 when including a win which was later forfeited during the 200203 season. SBU won its first 27 home openers in the RC until a 76-74 loss to Canisius on Dec. 3, 1994. Bona’s has won seven straight home openers, dating back to Nov. 23, 2004, when it suffered a 74-58 setback to Marist. Even more impressive, in games which have served as both home and season openers (like tonight), the Bonnies have NEVER lost in the Reilly Center, going an emphatic 32-0 in such contests.

THE CUPBOARD ISN’T REALLY THAT BARE

Despite losing A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention and top-20 NBA Draft Pick Andrew Nicholson, St. Bonaventure’s cupboard is fuller than many believe. In fact, last year the Bonnies were only outscored by 17 total points (574-557) when Nicholson was on bench. By comparison, with Nicholson in the game, Bonaventure was +190 (1,697-1,507).

Player-By-Player Scoring Breakdown Of Returners When Nicholson Was On The Bench in 2011-12

Notes For Players Related To Their Points Scored With Nicholson On The Bench (30 percent of his 388 total points for the year) (47 percent of 198 total points for the year) (42 percent of those points (30) came on 3-pointers) (45 percent of those points (30) came on 3-pointers) (12 of those points came on dunks)

(Redshirt last year after injuring shoulder 8 games in) (Former manager who has since walked on) Additionally, despite Nicholson’s overwhelming presence in the low blocks, the Bonnies were still able to produce points in the paint when he was not in the game. As a team, the Bonnies scored 944 total points in the paint last year. With Nicholson on the floor, that number was 728. Without him on the floor, that number was 216. In looking at the amount of minutes Nicholson played compared with point-in-the-paint production, there was an extremely minimal dropoff when he was on the bench. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .75 points in the paint per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, Bonaventure averaged .65 points in the paint per minute.

Perhaps even more stunning is that the Bonnies were actually more efficient rebounding the ball when Nicholson was on the bench. Nicholson finished second in the A-10 at 8.4 rebounds per game, and Bonaventure as a team led the conference and ranked 25th in the nation in rebounding margin at +5.5. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .86 rebounds per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, SBU averaged .94 rebounds per minute.

The Wildcats finished 18-17 last season and earned a berth in the MEAC Tournament championship game, where they lost to Norfolk State – which went on to upset Missouri in the NCAA Tournament. Senior point guard Kevin Dukes returns as the team’s leading scorer. The Preseason Second Team All-MEAC selection averaged 11.7 points per game and also led the Wildcats in 3-pointers, assists and minutes played last season. B-CU also returns forward Adrian Coleman, who averaged 11.5 ppg last year. The junior also led the team with 48 steals.

Sophomore Jordan Gathers saw a drastic increase in both minutes played and subsequently production beginning midway through his freshman season in 201112. The Bonnies will look to replace 2012 A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and First Round NBA Draft pick Andrew Nicholson, who led St. Bonaventure in scoring (18.5) and rebounding (8.4). SBU also lost Da’Quan Cook (7.6 points / 4.6 rebounds) to graduation. While Nicholson has moved on to the Orlando Magic, Cook has taken his game oversees where he signed a professional contract with BC Yambol in Bulgaria’s National Basketball League.

Charleston Southern, Detroit, Long Beach State, South Dakota State, Tennessee Tech and Wichita State are the other six schools which have improved their RPI each of the last five years. Of the seven teams, SBU is the only one to hail from a conference that has been rated among the top-10 in the country in RPI in each of the last five years.

Bona returns 10 letterwinners and three starters, including 2012 A-10 All-Championship Team member Demitrius Conger, who averaged 12.1 points and 6.2 rebounds – both second on the team to Nicholson. Conger has been named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Big 4 First Team. Bonaventure had 10 players average at least 10 minutes per game in 2011-12, tied for the most by any team in the A-10. Mark Schmidt was named the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and also claimed the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.

Saint Bonaventure, St. Bonas, Bonas, St. Bon, Saint Bonnies | Nickname: Bonnie’s St. Bonaventure’s slogan for the 2012-13 basketball season is “No Sleep ’Til Brooklyn.” The slogan, derived from the 1986 hit single by the Beastie Boys, was submitted by Patrick Didas, father of SBU freshman Cody Didas. It encapsulates the tireless effort needed to be put forth by the men’s and women’s basketball teams and their fans to reach the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship at the brand new, $1 billion Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The top 12 teams in the newly-formed 16-team A-10 on the men’s side advance to the A-10 Championship, which will be held entirely at the Barclays Center. The first three rounds of the women’s tournament will be held at Saint Joseph’s University before the championship game is played at Barclays. It will be the first women’s basketball game played in the state-of-the-art arena. This marks the second year in a row that fans have had the opportunity to select the basketball slogan. Last season’s extremely popular “Defining Our Legacy” slogan came to fruition as the men’s team won its first A-10 Championship title and the women’s squad went undefeated in the A-10 and advanced to the Sweet 16.

Demitrius Conger and Michael Davenport are both in position to reach 1,000 career points this season. Conger stands 208 points short of the milestone and will need to average a minimum of 7.2 points over SBU’s 29 regular season games to reach 1,000. Davenport is 253 points short and will need to average a minimum of 8.7 points per game over the season to hit 1,000. The last time Bonnies’ teammates reached 1,000 career points in the same season was in 2002-03, when junior Marques Green and senior Patricio Prato hit the milestone in back-to-back games against Duquesne (Jan. 25, 2003) and Cleveland State (Jan. 28, 2003), respectively. Conger and Davenport are also both eyeing 500 rebounds for their careers. Conger needs 61 rebounds (a minimum of 2.1 per game), while Davenport needs 149 (a minimum of 5.1 per game) to reach 500. Conger also needs 192 rebounds to crack the list of top-20 rebounders in program history. Last season Conger grabbed 199 boards. Twenty-two St. Bonaventure players have recorded both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds during their careers. The last SBU player to reach both career milestones was 2012 graduate Andrew Nicholson.

CBS Sports Network will carry the semifinals of both basketball championships and NBC Sports Network will produce the quarterfinals of both championships.

A-10 Declared “Realignment Winners” The Atlantic 10 made a big splash in the conference realignment craze in 2011-12, adding Butler and VCU to bring the league’s total number to 16. The moves led prominent media members, like Andy Katz of ESPN.com to declare the A-10 the “Winners of Conference Realignment.” Both programs made the jump to the A-10 immediately, thereby fortifying the league’s position as the best basketball-driven conference in Division I. The only non big six conference to have 41 at-large NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections in the past 20 years, including three in 2012, the A-10 has boasted 62 postseason appearances in the last decade. For the fifth year in a row, the Atlantic 10 Conference earned at least three bids and multiple at-large bids into the NCAA Tournament. Over the last six years, the Atlantic 10 has had 12 at-large selections - the seventh most among all other Division I conferences. A record eight A-10 institutions received invitations to the 2012 NCAA and NIT postseason tournaments, more than all but two conferences. The Butler announcement came on May 2. An NCAA Final Four participant in two of the last three years, Butler is the seventh A-10 program with at least one appearance in the Final Four. The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six years and have advanced past the first weekend in three of those years. In all, Butler has 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, and in five of those the Bulldogs have advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Eight of those 11 trips have come since 2000. The Bulldogs have seven straight 20-win seasons and have had a winning season in 18 of the last 19 years. VCU went to the Final Four in 2011. Along with the recent addition of Butler University, it brings the total A-10 programs School with at least one appearance in the Final Four to eight. VCU Fordham has made 11 total trips to the NCAA Tournament with four of La Salle/Saint Joseph’s/Temple those coming in the last six years. In seven of those 11 trips, Massachusetts the Rams have won at least one game, including their run to George Washington Saint Louis the 2011 Final Four. VCU has had eight postseason appearances Duquesne since 2000. Charlotte In addition, the moves solidify the A-10 standing in prime Butler media markets, strengthening the league’s hold on the Xavier Richmond market and adding the Indianapolis market. In all, St. Bonaventure the A-10 is in seven of the top 25 media markets, including Rhode Island four of the top 10. All 16 conference members are in the top 65 Richmond/VCU media markets in the country. The Atlantic 10 media footprint Dayton reaches over 23 million households. Total

The Atlantic 10 Conference announced in September of 2011 that it had formed a five-year partnership with the Barclays Center to bring the A-10 men’s basketball tournament to Brooklyn and the new arena, beginning in 2013. The joint announcement was made at the Barclays Center Showroom in Manhattan, N.Y. It will mark the first time the A-10 Championship, which sends its champion to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, will be held in metropolitan New York City and the first time it will be played in a state-of-the-art new facility. “The opportunity to partner with the Barclays Center and bring the Atlantic 10 Basketball Championship to New York has unlimited possibilities. Our teams will compete in the newest, state-of-the-art facility within the Atlantic 10 footprint and the number-one media market in the country,” stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. Scheduled to open in September, the Barclays Center will be a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue and the future home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. The Barclays Center will offer approximately 18,200 seats for basketball and will have one of the most intimate seating configurations ever designed into a modern multi-purpose arena. The last time the Atlantic 10 Tournament was in an NBA building was in 2002 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. “We are thrilled for the Barclays Center to play host to one of men’s basketball’s most prestigious conference tournaments,” Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark said. “We appreciate our alliance with the Atlantic 10 as we position the Barclays Center as a significant national collegiate sports venue.” The highest concentration of Atlantic 10 alumni of any region in the county live and work in the New York metro area. There are 2.5 million people total in Brooklyn and 8.1 million total people in New York, an opportunity for the A-10’s premier event to be played on the biggest stage in the nation. “Brooklyn and the surrounding metropolitan New York area is home to over 100,000 Atlantic 10 alumni; this combined with the eight-million plus population will give the Atlantic 10 an opportunity to grow the Championship to new heights,” said McGlade. The move also places the championship into the largest media market in the nation and home to CBS Sports, the Atlantic 10’s television partner for the men’s basketball championship. CBS Sports carries several regular season A-10 games and the league’s championship title game is aired on CBS as part of the network’s Selection Sunday package. The Atlantic 10 is one of the most successful and wellrespected leagues for basketball. The A-10 has averaged more than three teams per year in the top 50 of the RPI, equal to the Southeastern Conference. For the last four years, the Atlantic 10 earned three bids into the NCAA Tournament, one of only six Division I conferences to do so. Over the last six years, the league has had 10 at-large selections - the seventh most in Division I - behind only the big six BCS leagues.

Will have three years of playing eligibility beginning as a sophomore in the 2013-14 season. Not allowed to play in games during the 2012-13 season due to the NCAA’s “delayed enrollment” ruling. Since more than a year passed between Runs’ high school graduation date and his enrollment at St. Bonaventure, the NCAA mandates that he “sit the year in residency” before becoming eligible. Runs graduated from high school in the spring of 2010 and took a year off from schooling and basketball competition before enrolling at Spain’s Canaries Basketball Academy (CBA) in the fall of 2011. The Netherlands native played in 22 games at CBA during the 2011-12 season. That competition – combined with the “delayed enrollment” – caused him to lose a year of eligibility.

2012 SPORtING NEWS AtLANtIC 10 COACH OF tHE YEAR •

19th coach in 92 seasons of basketball at St. Bonaventure.

Schmidt was recognized for his remarkable work in rebuilding the Bonnies by being named the 2012 Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.

Schmidt was instrumental in the development of 2012 A-10 Player of the Year and AP Honorable Mention All-American Andrew Nicholson, who ended his career ranked second in school history in scoring (2,103 points) and fourth in rebounds (887). Nicholson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the First Round of the 2012 NBA Draft with the 19th overall pick.

SBU’s 20 victories overall and 10 in the Atlantic 10 in 2011-12 were its most since the 19992000 season, the last time a Bona team had earned an NCAA Tournament bid. The 10 victories also marked just the fourth time in history a Bonaventure team reached double-digit conference triumphs.

In May 2012, St. Bonaventure rewarded Schmidt with a five-year contract extension that runs through the conclusion of the 2018-19 season.

Ahead of schedule with respect to his previous head coaching stint at Robert Morris. During his third and fourth season at RMU, Schmidt posted back-to-back seasons with the same number of wins (14) before guiding the team to a record over .500 (15-14). He guided SBU to 15-win seasons in year two and three, before going over .500 in year four and eight games over in year five last season.

Has recruited and developed 10 players who were drafted into the NBA, including First-Round picks James Posey (#18), David West (#18) and Nicholson.

Success at RMU: brought in Tony Lee, who in 2007-08 was the NEC Player of the Year and currently owns that school’s career rebounding record (751); Jeremy Chappell was 2008-09 NEC POY and graduated as school’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals, double-figure scoring games, games played and starts.

stretch in January? “The A-10 didn’t do us any favors,” he said with a laugh. “But we have to play them some time. No matter how it sets up, by the end, you still have to play all the teams. “It’s a tough stretch against very good teams and some of the best teams in our league, but it’s exciting to have a VCU come in for their first road A-10 game, to have a Xavier come in. I think it’s good, but at the same time it’s really difficult because those are the perennial powers in our league.” Following that stretch, Schmidt’s team will take one of its two byes before opening February with Duquesne (Feb. 2), its lone travel partner this season, in the Reilly Center. Bona will then make its inaugural trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on Butler (Feb. 6) followed by another road game three days later at Rhode Island. Its only other stretch of back-to-back road games comes in mid-January when it travels to Philadelphia twice in the span in four days. Bona alternates between home and away games over its last seven contests, ending with Dayton at UD Arena (March 6) and at home with Fordham (March 9).

the addition of VCU and Butler and the fact Temple and Charlotte still have a year left in the league before departing for other conferences. The Rams and Bulldogs, two of the best mid-major programs in the nation, have a combined three Final Four appearances in the last three years. Add them to what was already one of the top seven or so conferences in the country, and the Bonnies have what is undoubtedly the toughest conference slate of the Schmidt era, perhaps even since its been in the Atlantic 10. “No question,” Schmidt said. “Some people are talking about the Atlantic 10 being as good or better than the Big East. It’s certainly the most challenging with the teams that are always there year-in and year-out and with the additions of VCU and Butler.” The Bonnies, the defending Atlantic 10 champions, will find out how challenging in just the first couple of weeks. After opening on the road at George Washington, they face easily the most brutal part of the schedule with home contests against VCU and Xavier, road games at Temple and Saint Joseph’s and another home game with Saint Louis … with the first and latter two the likely favorites to win the league. Four of those teams (VCU, Xavier, Temple and Saint Louis) made the NCAA Tournament last season while the Hawks, who return all five starters, made it to the NIT. As a group, they finished 122-50 last year. So what was Schmidt’s reaction to such an unforgiving

ST. BONAVENTURE – Eight televised games, a home contest with VCU and a trip to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse highlight the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team’s 2012-’13 Atlantic 10 schedule, released by the conference Thursday afternoon. The Bonnies will play six of their first eight league games on either national or regional television, including back-to-back nationally-televised contests against Xavier (home, Jan. 16) and Temple (away, Jan. 19). Four of their six regionally-televised games will be in the Reilly Center, including their home-opener against Virginia Commonwealth on Jan. 12. The eight televised contests are the most for a St. Bonaventure team in over a decade. It’s a far cry from even a short while ago when the Bonnies went multiple seasons without a single televised affair. “It’s terrific,” said coach Mark Schmidt, who is entering his sixth season on the Bona sideline. “In the past, we were never on TV. We were begging to be on TV. Television helps with recruiting; every kid wants to see themselves, or the family see their son, on television. “And it’s good for the school. You can’t pay that type of money to be on national television that many times and see ‘Bonnies’ across the chest of our players. It’s a great tool for our university to be able to get our name out there.” While the Atlantic 10 docket has always been difficult, Bona will face a particularly arduous task this season with

Last winter, St. Bonaventure capped its most impressive season in a decade by cutting down the nets in Atlantic City after defeating Xavier in the league’s championship game (The schools first ever title). Senior Andrew Nicholson, the league’s Most Outstanding Player for the season, as well as the tournament, ended his A-10 career with a 26 point, 14 rebound, eight block effort that capped his remarkable career. When Nicholson was drafted 19th overall by the Orlando Magic in the June NBA Draft, the Bonnies not only lost over 2,100 career points, 887 rebounds and 244 blocks. Nicholson left head coach Mark Schmidt with one big question: Where do the Bonnies go from here? The answer, as it turns out, maybe have been discovered during that same magical weekend in Atlantic City. While Andrew Nicholson was busy turning the heads of NBA scouts and improving his draft stock, several other Bonnies grew up in front of Mark Schmidt on the league’s biggest stage. In the Bonnies 71-68 quarterfinal win against Saint Joseph’s, sophomore point guard Charloon Kloof scored a career high 19 points and knocked down critical free throws in the game’s waning moments. Kloof ’s sophomore season was really his freshman, as he lost a year of eligibility due to playing a year in prep school in the Canary Islands. Kloof improved leaps and bounds over the course of the season and by year’s end, looked the part of confident play caller, big time athlete and potential scoring point guard. About 24 hours later in the semifinal against UMass, rising senior guard/forward Demitrius Conger nearly posted a triple double: 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Conger can best be described as mercurial; here one day and gone the next.

olson, Cook, Ndoye, Simmons and Houseknecht). Having lost Nicholson’s 18.5 points as well as Cook’s 7.6, you can bet the Bonnies will suffer from growing pains in the paint (though getting RS junior M. Simmons back will help some). Schmidt, however, will be less than afraid to adapt his offensive scheme. At Robert Morris (Schmidt’s previous school) Schmidt was known for his uptempo offense. In 2006 RMU averaged 73.6 points per game and in his final season in Pittsburgh, the Colonials averaged 75.9 points. Schmidt talked in 2008 about his passion for six foot RMU point guard Tony Lee, who he relied on to push the basketball and find easy buckets. He was, as Schmidt said, a jet quick guard who was as tough as the come. This is the kind of player he wanted to help him mold St. Bonaventure basketball when he arrived in Olean. But, after watching Nicholson develop as a freshman, Schmidt knew he needed to play to his team’s strength and build an offense around the big man. He did just that, showing the ability to put his players in the best position to succeed while putting his personal basketball philosophies away. Now, Schmidt has the personnel (and loss of personnel) to let his team push the ball and run. Schmidt has longed for that point guard (like Lee), who he could construct an offense around and in Kloof, it appears he has one. Armed with the quick and athletic 6’3″ point man, and experienced returners in Michael Davenport (redshirt senior), Conger (senior), Mosley (senior), Johnson (senior), Wright (junior) and Gathers (sophomore) the Bonnies cupboard isn’t as bare as many may think.

2012-13

st. Bonaventure men’s BasketBall

Still, he has the athleticism and offensive game that could net him All-League honors in his senior year. Freshman guard Jordan Gathers started the game and notched a career high nine points, showing a comfortability level never seen before. Gathers displayed a rarely seen poise on offense, but must work to improve his jump shot this summer. Not to be forgotten was Chris Johnson’s 14 points off the bench in just 24 minutes. Johnson, a junior college transfer from Canada, became an “instant offense” type benchplayer for the Bonnies who could play the three or four spot. The league final may have been the Nicholson show, but the Bonnies received contributions from freshman center Youssou Ndoye (four points, two rebounds), junior point guard Eric Mosley (seven points) and sophomore shooting guard Matthew Wright (five points). The numbers aren’t overwhelming by any means, but small contributions on the biggest stage in March can go a long way in building confidence for next fall. Ndoye, a 6’11″ center whose game is as raw as they come, has the biggest upside of the group. The Senegal native only picked up a basketball a few years ago, but come March showed major growth after the loss of forward Marquis Simmons (ACL tear) in November. Now, Schmidt must alter his team’s offensive mindset from a halfcourt team who plays inside then out, to a team that pushes the tempo and looks for easy buckets in transition. Without Nicholson, he has no other choice. Simply: The Bonnies will play to their strengths in 2012-2013; their guards. Last season, armed with the best offensive player in the league, the Bonnies scored 70.8 points per game (8th in A-10) and received 31.7 points per game from their frontline players (Nich-

There will be 30 potential men’s basketball appearances on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, 54 on CBS Sports Network and 50 on NBC Sports Network. The A-10 also receives additional commitments from NBC Sports Network Regional outlets. ESPN retains the rights to the men’s basketball championship game. ESPN has sublicensed the men’s championship to CBS Sports since 2010. CBS Sports Network will carry the semifinals of both basketball championships and NBC Sports Network will produce the quarterfinals of both championships. “The Atlantic 10 is a very deep conference with a proven track record of success at the highest levels of the sport,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN Senior Vice President, College Sports Programming. “This long-term extension will continue to serve fans with the conference’s premier content across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU into the next decade.” The agreement further separates the Atlantic 10 from other conferences as the best basketballdriven conference in Division I. The only nonbig six conference to have 41 at-large NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections in the past 20 years, including three in 2012, the A-10 has boasted 62 postseason appearances in the last decade. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has secured eight-year partnerships with ESPN, CBS Sports Network and NBC Sports Group for its media and television rights. The agreements more than double the men’s basketball national exposure for the A-10 membership and will begin in 2013-14. The new agreements will give the league unprecedented reach, distribution and marketing, allowing the Atlantic 10 to better serve its fans in its extensive media footprint and to leverage the promotional platforms and marketing assets of these three major national media companies. The A-10 is in seven of the top 25 media markets, including four of the top 10. Beginning in 2013-14, all 14 conference members will be in the top 65 media markets in the country and the Atlantic 10 media footprint will reach over 33 million television households, which is approximately 33 percent of the US television market. “Our commitment to basketball at the highest level has allowed us to leverage our national exposure in the best way possible for the Atlantic 10,” stated Bernadette V. McGlade, A-10 Commissioner. “Partnering with ESPN, CBS Sports Network and NBC Sports Network for the next eight years is truly a historic moment for the A-10 and its member institutions.” The agreements provide over 192 total basketball exposures, including 146 men’s basketball appearances. This includes coverage of the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals of the men’s basketball championship.

Dunphy said. “The A-10 is in a great position.” One year ago at this time, there was no media day trip to New York for Stevens. In fact, Butler’s coach said there wasn’t a media day at all in the Horizon league. Nothing in-person or even a conference call. Smart comes from a more reputable league, the CAA. However, it’ll be different for the Rams. They won’t have to finish in the top couple spots or win the league tourney to gain inclusion to the NCAA tourney any longer. The league could legitimately have a half-dozen NCAA tournament teams. Yes, even with Xavier -- which has been the flagship program of late -- bound to struggle this season. St. Joe’s, Saint Louis, Temple, VCU, UMass and Butler are all legitimate candidates -- and Dayton, Richmond and La Salle can’t be discounted, either. “We’ve got a really nice team,” Butler athletic director Barry Collier said. “And we could legitimately finish between eighth and 12th. That’s how good the league is.” That won’t happen. Not as long as Stevens is in charge, but Collier -- a former college coach -- is correct in his assessment regarding the depth of the A-10. While the Big East has certainly taken its share of heat for the loss of three key programs and coaches, the gap has closed between the Big East and the A-10. You can now at least have an argument that the A-10 can compete with the Big East beginning in 2013-14. “There’s no question the sky is the limit with this league,” Stevens said while sitting at one table upstairs at the Barclay’s Arena. Smart, at the next table over, looked over and nodded his approval. “It’s going to be fun,” he said. It certainly is -- and everyone will be paying attention now.

sit in a power conference. “The Barclays deal was key for us,” McGlade said. “The opportunity to get into New York, into a venue like this. When you have the opportunity, you have to take it.” But the venue doesn’t mean anything unless you have the programs. And the programs doesn’t mean anything without the coaches. And the coaches aren’t who they are without the players. There’s Stevens and Shaka, who instantaneously become the face of the league with Final Four appearances on their young resumes. There’s Phil Martelli, the always-outspoken St. Joe’s head man who has the Hawks back in contention for a league title after a couple of subpar seasons. There are the young bucks: Xavier’s Chris Mack, who has gone to a couple of Sweet 16’s; Dayton’s Archie Miller, UMass’ Derek Kellogg; Richmond’s Chris Mooney and Rhode Island’s Danny Hurley. Mark Schmidt did the near-impossible and led St. Bonaventure to the A-10 tournament title last season and La Salle’s John Giannini has done a nice job in Philly. There are also other guys who inherited tough predicaments: George Washington’s Mike Lonergan, Duquesne’s Jim Ferry and Fordham’s Tom Pecora. That’s one hell of a coaching stable -- and most of them are able to recruit and develop players. McGlade was proactive throughout the process. She identified numerous schools and did her due diligence, much of it on the down-low, eventually winding up with a big-time arena and arguably the two hottest young coaches in the game. Temple’s departure to the Big East a year from now is significant (Charlotte will also leave for C-USA), but even Owls coach Fran Dunphy is the first to admit that this league is thriving. “I think the world of these two coaches, Brad and Shaka,”

@BonnieSmBB

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade stood behind the podium on Thursday afternoon at the Barclays Arena and flashed a huge smile, not one of those phony grins that conference leaders have been known to show in an effort to hide what’s gone awry. McGlade and the A-10 have come out on top in the game of realignment, at least for the time being, and all she had to do was look over in the direction of Butler’s baby-faced coach Brad Stevens and VCU’s boy wonder Shaka Smart for affirmation. The Pac-12 added Colorado and Utah a year ago. The Big East has swapped Syracuse, Pittsburgh and West Virginia with Memphis, Temple, Houston, Central Florida and SMU. The Big 12 lost Missouri and Texas A&M and gained West Virginia and TCU. Even the Mountain West took a hit, losing San Diego State to the Big West. Conference leaders have lost their jobs at the hands of school-swapping. But the A-10 was victorious on the hoops side. Sure, it’ll hurt to lose Fran Dunphy and the Temple Owls to the Big East in 2013-14. But this league has clearly undergone a make-over. Who knows how long it’ll last. No one can be certain what direction new Big East commish Mike Aresco takes his conference, whether it loses more teams or splits into a non-football league -- and targets a school or two from the A-10. However, for the time being, McGlade and the rest of the league is basking in its glory. There were those who questioned McGlade’s decision to take the league tourney from Atlantic City, N.J., and bring it to the brand-spanking new Barclays Center -- which is just a few miles down the road from the Big East tourney’s home, Madison Square Garden. But give McGlade credit. That was the first major step to positioning this as the best league that doesn’t

have just as much as excitement,” Miller said. “This was an incredible league to start with,” Butler coach Brad Stevens told the AP. “I hope we make it even better. I know VCU does, no question. This league will have multiple bids, the question is how many. Nobody will know that until March.” Both Stevens and VCU coach Shaka Smart were considered for multiple college coaching jobs after their Final Four runs. Along with Stevens, Smart, Ferry and fellow first-year Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, the former Wagner coach, the league has four new head coaches, five if you count Jim Crews, who has taken over at St. Louis while Rick Majerus battles health issues. Saint Joseph’s, which has all five starters back from last season, was the preseason pick to win the A-10 with Saint Louis right behind. The Hawks, who finished 20-14 last season, received 11 firstplace votes and 434 points from the panel of coaches and media. The Billikens, who reached the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000, had 10 first-place votes and 432 points. VCU was picked third followed by Temple, Massachusetts, Butler, La Salle, Dayton, Xavier, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Charlotte, George Washington, Fordham, Rhode Island and Duquesne. Now, it remains to be seen if fans will come out to the Barclays Center in March to watch these teams at the same time the Big East is playing at the Garden. Ferry, who used to play hooky to watch the Big East, said he would come now to see the A-10 Tournament. “I’m coming here, I’m coming here,” he said. “Come on, Brooklyn’s hot right now. You may run into Jay Z when you’re down here, how great would that be?”

HeAd-to-HeAd

“It’s a great week in particular, but being in New York City, being on TV with the new [A-10] television deal and having basically the top 12 teams out of our league, it’s going to be a deep tournament.” First-year Duquesne coach Jim Ferry used to play hooky from school as a kid to watch the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden, but now he feels the A-10 may be eclipsing the Big East. “There’s going to be a lot of people that, whether they’re disappointed in the direction that the Big East has gone, I know everybody’s really excited in the direction the Atlantic 10′s going right now,” said Ferry, who led LIU-Brooklyn to back-toback NCAA Tournament bids. “So to be able to bring it right here in downtown Brooklyn, the hottest place in America, I think it was a great move by our conference. We’re going to have some fun with it.” While the A-10 will lose Temple to the Big East next season and Charlotte to Conference USA, Commissioner Bernadette McGlade scored big-time by adding Butler and VCU, which have combined to make three Final Four appearances since 2010. “What we did, basically, was we knew if we were going to bring in any new members into the league it had to be institutions with a commitment to its men’s basketball program and a broad-based athletic program as well,” McGlade, who is starting her 13th season as A-10 Commissioner, told the Associated Press. “Given that was our fundamental principle, it was obvious of any institutions like that, Butler and VCU would be in the upper echelon of those programs.” Miller said the addition of Butler — which reached back-toback NCAA title games in 2010 and ’11 — was a huge get. “I know this, if Butler had joined the Big East, everyone would

BROOKLYN — They are brimming with bravado in Brooklyn. Armed with one state-of-the-art arena at the Barclays Center, two new teams, four first-year coaches and eight sold-out Jay Z shows, the folks in the Atlantic 10 Conference say they’re ready to take on the Big East during March Madness. How confident is the 16-team league in its new product? So confident that the A-10 Tournament will go head-to-head with the Big East Tournament in March. “It’s in this County of Kings and on Brooklyn’s big stage,” Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz proclaimed Thursday at A-10 Media Day. “March Madness will forever be known as Kings County Chaos. You got it? Kings County Chaos. After all, here in Brooklyn, just like the A-10, it’s all about in-your-face bold and brash excitement.” The A-10 — which now features recent Final Four participants Butler and VCU — will play its postseason tournament at the Barclays March 14-17 (Thursday-Sunday), with the league’s top 12 teams making the event. The Big East Tournament runs March 12-16, meaning the two events will be competing for ticket sales, media coverage and excitement during much of that week. The A-10 semifinals will take place on the Saturday afternoon, while the Big East championship game is always played that night. The A-10 final takes place on Selection Sunday afternoon. Some A-10 coaches say, Bring on the Big East. “This conference race could be maybe more exciting than theirs,” Dayton coach Archie Miller said of the A-10. “I really feel like at the end of the day, you’re going to have to pick your excitement around here.

“Now it’s not a dream,” Schmidt said. “We did it.”

They also don’t have to get creative during the recruiting pitch. A conference title and a first-round draft pick makes it easier to sell recruits on the Bonnies.

“I don’t know,” Schmidt said. “I don’t ask. I said, ‘Great. We don’t have to take a horse and buggy anymore.’”

St. Bonaventure also bought guaranteed games against Bethune Cookman and The Citadel. So where did the money come from?

“Chartering means you’re not going to wear down as the season goes along,” Schmidt said. “I don’t know how we did it last year with the success we had.”

The Bonnies play at Ohio on Nov. 28. Schmidt said in the past they would’ve been on the bus for eight hours and miss three days of class. Now the Bonnies will practice at home, fly to Athens, then return af-

“We got more money, we can charter flights and we can buy games,” Schmidt said. “And I got a sevenyear extension.”

Suddenly, the Bonnies have money.

And don’t underestimate the changes that come with making a spirit-lifting NCAA tournament appearance.

Conger, Davenport, Mosley and Johnson are all seniors this season, along with Marquise Simmons, back from an injured Achilles. Toss in sophomore Youssou Ndoye and the Bonnies have the pieces to be a surprise -- again.

“These players want to prove that they weren’t a oneman show,” Schmidt said. “These players want to prove that they’re good. You’re always as good as your seniors.”

So much for respect. The perception is that last season was a one-hit wonder -- and that doesn’t sit particularly well in Olean, N.Y.

Yet, St. Bonaventure is picked 11th in the preseason.

The Bonnies had depth, though. Demitrius Conger, Eric Mosley and Chris Johnson give this team as much experience as any team outside of Saint Louis and Saint Joseph’s. And Michael Davenport is back after being out with a shoulder injury.

“We weren’t a one-man team last year,” he said. “The perception was that we were.”

Not so fast, says SBU coach Mark Schmidt.

And the assumption is that Andrew Nicholson defined the Bonnies and was the reason they finished 10-6 and tied for third with perennial power Xavier before winning the A-10 tournament.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- St. Bonaventure had a first-round NBA draft pick last season -- the only first-round pick in the Atlantic 10.

If any team in the country should be unafraid of rebuilding, it’s St. Bonaventure. Compared to what Schmidt inherited five years ago, the current project is elementary. More importantly, regarding the here and now, there’s enough to piece together a respectable season. Conger is solid and all the returnees from 2011-12 are all-in on Schmidt’s defensive philosophies.

If the Bonnies are to win, they will need to replicate last year’s dedication to defense, a tall order without Nicholson in the paint. Schmidt’s team held opponents to 65.0 ppg, 41.7 percent shooting from the field and 32.6 percent from 3. Additionally, Bonaventure rebounded (5.5-plus margin ranked 25th nationally) and made free throws (76.1 percent ranked 16th nationally). Stick to those basics and wins will come. “We can still find success if we can win those areas,” Schmidt said. “If we can defend, if we can take care of the ball and we can rebound, we’ll find success. It’s that simple. “The kids saw what we did, how we did it and understand how we had success. They saw the blueprint.”

and found some pavement, still calls the Allegheny Mountains home. While St. Bonaventure was merrily rolling to a win over Xavier in the A-10 finals and into the second round of the NCAA tournament (lost to Florida State, 66-63), rumors percolated that the Bonnies’ coach would get poached. Schmidt, though, says he never blinked. “I really enjoy it here,” Schmidt said. “I think the people here have their priorities in order. It was an easy decision. We really enjoy it up here. There’s pressure, but nobody really bothers me. I’m able to be a father and enjoy myself. [Staying] wasn’t as big of a deal as some people made it out to be.” And so on May 9, Schmidt signed a contract extension to keep him at St. Bonaventure through 2018-19. Now onto the 2012-13 season. There is no Nicholson and there is no replacing him. The Bonnies do, however, return eight players who averaged more than 10 minutes per game last season, including three starters. Senior forward Demitrius Conger (12.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.3 apg) will lead the Bonnies alongside Matthew Wright (6.8 ppg, 2.8 apg), a 6-4 junior, and Charlon Kloof (6.4 ppg, 2.7 apg), a 6-3 junior. Like the rest of St. Bonaventure’s returnees, Conger will only benefit from last year’s whimsical run to the NCAA tournament. Schmidt believes winning begets winning. “It can only help,” he said. “You’re only going to win by winning. Our guys have put themselves in those situations and come out ahead. Last year was a great learning experience for those guys and a big confidence booster.”

@BonniesmBB

Indeed, the black veil has been lifted and St. Bonaventure is, simply, St. Bonaventure again. No caveat needed. Coming off its first Atlantic 10 title and first NCAA appearance since 2000, the Bonnies lost their hero but kept their savior this offseason. Andrew Nicholson, arguably the best player to come through Olean since Bob Lanier did his thing for the Brown Indians in the late ‘60s, is now property of the NBA. Schmidt, though, the man who took a dead-end job in 2007

For the first time in a long time, a St. Bonaventure season preview won’t begin with rehashing the dark ages. In fact, the details of the school’s infamous 2003 scandal won’t appear here at all. Why? Because Mark Schmidt and the Bonnies deserve the fresh start they’ve earned. They exorcised their demons in 201112 and the past is now, officially, in the past.

How do you see the Bonnies season playing out? I don’t know how are season is going to play out, but I do know that we will work hard to reach success.

Summer 2013, can we expect to see you in action with the Dutch national team? I honestly can’t say if I will be available for this summer’s national team. A couple of things need to be taken care of first before I make that decision. For now i’m leaving that decision open, because I really don’t know yet.

How would you describe where you were last year at this time and where you are now? What are the differences and how have you grown? I am much more of a leader than I was last year. I am in better shape and better prepared for the season. I think all my improvements compared to last year are more me understanding what to expect and what I need to bring to the team for us to be successful. The first year was really getting a feel for the system, the coaching staff and the competition.

What did you work on this summer in preparation for the upcoming season? I worked on every part of my game this summer with emphases on my passing and shooting. I want to be able to find the open man and deliver the ball right on time and score if the team needs me to.

You have a reputation of being a very good on-the-ball defender. Is that something you take a lot of pride in? My defense is my way of making sure that I get a spot on a team. Offense can be off one day, but defense never and I enjoy looking at someone’s stats and see that he had 5 or 10 points less than his average or that he had to work twice as hard to get a basket. I don’t like getting ready to play against someone and hearing that he’s an all-american or really good and unstoppable. I always try to prove that I can stop or slow that player down.

He is the most patient coach I have ever met which was really crucial for my progress as a international player and as a new player to the system.

What about Coach Schmidt? Whats he like personality-wise? Coach Schmidt is a funny guy who likes to tell jokes and tell stories.

What makes last season team play in such an unselfish fashion? Does the credit go to your coach, Mark Schmidt? I would say after the second game we played Duquesne University and won. After that game we were really one team and everyone knew and accepted their role.

At what point during last season did St. Bonaventure transition from being a good team to being a great one? Last season’s team played unselfish, because everyone knew what the team’s goal was and we understood that it would take everyone giving everything to get there. Coach Schmidt has to get some of the credit, because he is the one that kept us focused on our goal and made sure we never forgot.

ers. The other adjustments were knowing the system we play and what the coaches like and don’t like.

@BonnIEsmBB

Charlon, was it hard to transition to playing at the college level, after your time at the Spanish Canarias Basketball Academy? It was a big adjustment for me from anywhere else I played. The basic adjustments were the speed of the game and the strength of the play-

What area of your game has improved the most since attending St. Bonaventure University? I would say that I improved the most with my floor game and my shot. I understand the game better and make better decisions.

Why did you choose for the Bonnies and what has been the best part of the school? I choose the Bonnies because they had a good coaching staff that was bringing back a good program. The program was making progress every year and that was enough for me to decide to come here. The fact that they needed a point guard and that they had a pro player on the team helped a lot also. The best part of playing for the Bonnies is the atmosphere at the games. Getting my name and home city called during starting lineups the best.
