Leo E. Keenan Jr. The first St. Bonaventure Golf Invitational was held at Bartlett Country Club in 1989. Five years later, the tournament was renamed in honor of former St. Bonaventure golf coach Leo E. Keenan, Jr., the man who remains the inspiration for the event. Following service in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, Keenan returned to St. Bonaventure and earned his degree in 1947. He taught English at the University for more than 50 years, from 1949 until 2001. He specialized in American Literature and Public Speaking, as well as Bibliography and Research. He also served as an acting dean, and for many years oversaw the University summer school program. He passed away in 2002. During his tenure as coach, the Bonnies amassed a record of 172-90-10, including three undefeated teams. In 1967, St. Bonaventure won the ECAC Regional Championship under his leadership. He was the first coach to take a St. Bonaventure team into international competition, journeying to the famed Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland in 1971 and 1973. Like himself, Keenan’s players were staunch competitors who lived by the rules of the game and always acted like gentlemen. The loyalty of his former players to the coach is a testament to the lasting impact he had on their lives. He retired from coaching in 1987; he was active in the planning and running of this tournament when it commenced two years later. The prestige of the tournament and the caliber of competition has increased every year, much of it due to Keenan’s efforts. He was known as “Coach,” “Professor” and “Uncle Leo,” but he preferred to be thought of simply as a Bonaventure man, someone who gave the majority of his professional life in unwavering service to his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University. In 1993, Coach Keenan was inducted into the St. Bonaventure Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the St. Bonaventure ROTC Hall of Fame and the St. Bonaventure Alumni Hall of Fame. His late wife, Ann, his nine children, a daughter-in-law and eight of his grandchildren have graduated or are currently attending Keenan’s beloved St. Bonaventure University.
