2011-12 In Brief

St. Bonaventure won its first Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000 where it narrowly lost to 3rd-seeded ACC Champion Florida State in the Second Round, 66-63.

What’s Gone & What’s Back

The Bonnies will look to replace 2012 A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and First Round NBA Draft pick Andrew Nicholson, who led St. Bonaventure in scoring (18.5) and rebounding (8.4). SBU also lost Da’Quan Cook (7.6 points / 4.6 rebounds) to graduation. While Nicholson has moved on to the Orlando Magic, Cook has taken his game oversees where he signed a professional contract with BC Yambol in Bulgaria’s National Basketball League. Bona returns 10 letterwinners and three starters, including 2012 A-10 All-Championship Team member Demitrius Conger, who averaged 12.1 points and 6.2 rebounds – both second on the team to Nicholson. Bonaventure had 10 players average at least 10 minutes per game in 201112, tied for the most by any team in the A-10. Mark Schmidt was named the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and also claimed the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year. (further roster breakdown on next page)

Five-Year Resurgence

By going 10-6 and finishing 4th in the A-10 in 2012, St. Bonaventure increased its conference win total and bettered its league finish for the fifth straight year since head coach Mark Schmidt took over the Bonnies in 2007-08. Additionally, St. Bonaventure is one of only seven Division I schools in the nation to have improved its RPI in each of the last five seasons. YEAR RPI A-10 Wins A-10 Finish Charleston Southern, Detroit, Long Beach 2007-08 264 2 (2-14) 14th State, South Dakota 2008-09 192 6 (6-10) 11th State, Tennessee Te 2009-10 156 7 (7-9) T-8th ch and Wichita State 2010-11 128 8 (8-8) 7th are the other six 2011-12 76 10 (10-6) 4th schools which have improved their RPI each of the last five years. Of the seven teams, SBU is the only one to hail from a conference that has been rated among the top-10 in the country in RPI in each of the last five years.

THE CUPBOARD ISN’T REALLY THAT BARE

Despite losing A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention and top-20 NBA Draft Pick Andrew Nicholson, St. Bonaventure’s cupboard is fuller than many believe. In fact, last year the Bonnies were only outscored by 17 total points (574-557) when Nicholson was on bench. By comparison, with Nicholson in the game, Bonaventure was +190 (1,697-1,507).

Player-By-Player Scoring Breakdown Of Returning Players When Nicholson Was On The Bench in 2011-12

Notes For Players Related To Their Points Scored With Nicholson On The Bench (30 percent of his 388 total points for the year) (47 percent of 198 total points for the year) (42 percent of those points (30) came on 3-pointers) (45 percent of those points (30) came on 3-pointers) (12 of those points came on dunks)

(Redshirt last year after injuring shoulder 8 games in) (Former manager who has since walked on) Additionally, despite Nicholson’s overwhelming presence in the low blocks, the Bonnies were still able to produce points in the paint when he was not in the game. As a team, the Bonnies scored 944 total points in the paint last year. With Nicholson on the floor, that number was 728. Without him on the floor, that number was 216. In looking at the amount of minutes Nicholson played compared with point-in-the-paint production, there was an extremely minimal dropoff when he was on the bench. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .75 points in the paint per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, Bonaventure averaged .65 points in the paint per minute.

Perhaps even more stunning is that the Bonnies were actually more efficient rebounding the ball when Nicholson was on the bench. Nicholson finished second in the A-10 at 8.4 rebounds per game, and Bonaventure as a team led the conference and ranked 25th in the nation in rebounding margin at +5.5. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .86 rebounds per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, SBU averaged .94 rebounds per minute.

Non-Conference Docket

St. Bonaventure’s non-conference schedule features contests against six teams which went to postseason tournaments last year, including four versus NCAA Tournament squads. The Bonnies will play 13 non-league contests in total – six at home, six on the road and one at a neutral site. Six of the 13 teams won 20 or more games last year, and two advanced to the Sweet 16. Bonaventure will conclude its non-conference docket with three straight games against NCAA Tournament teams. NCAA: Ohio (Sweet 16) | NC State (Sweet 16) | Iona: (1st Round) | (Colorado State: 2nd Round) NIT: Cleveland State | CIT: Buffalo

Numbers Never Lie

Much of St. Bonaventure’s recent success can be directly correlated to the below numbers, which have gradually increased each year. Scoring Margin Highlighting Bona’s climb to the top of the Atlantic 10 in 2011-2012, it made improvements in scoring margin in conference games each of the last three seasons. SBU finished 3rd in the A-10 with a +5.9 scoring margin last season, climbing four spots from 7th in 2010-11 and up six spots from 9th in 2009-10. Scoring Defense The Bonnies jumped nine spots to 2nd in the A-10 in conference games in scoring defense last year, limiting league opponents to 66.6 points per game. Field Goal Percentage The Bonnies have finished among the top-5 in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage over each of the last four seasons. They ranked 5th in 2008-09, 1st in 2009-10 and 4th the last two seasons. Field Goal Percentage Defense Bonaventure finished 5th in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage defense (.417) last season, up four spots from 2010-11 when it was 9th. Rebounding Margin The Bonnies have finished among the top-4 in the Atlantic 10 in rebounding margin in three of the last four seasons, culminating in last season’s conference-leading +5.5 average. SBU finished 3rd in the A-10 in rebounding margin in 2010-11 and 4th in 2008-09. In conference games only, St. Bonaventure finished among the top-4 in the Atlantic 10 in nine different statistical categories in 2011-12.

Upcoming Milestones

Demitrius Conger and Michael Davenport are both in position to reach 1,000 career points this season. Conger stands 208 points short of the milestone and will need to average a minimum of 7.2 points over SBU’s 29 regular season games to reach 1,000. Davenport is 253 points short and will need to average a minimum of 8.7 points per game over the season to hit 1,000. The last time Bonnies’ teammates reached 1,000 career points in the same season was in 2002-03, when junior Marques Green and senior Patricio Prato hit the milestone in back-to-back games against Duquesne (Jan. 25, 2003) and Cleveland State (Jan. 28, 2003), respectively. Conger and Davenport are also both eyeing 500 rebounds for their careers. Conger needs 61 rebounds (a minimum of 2.1 per game), while Davenport needs 149 (a minimum of 5.1 per game) to reach 500. Conger also needs 192 rebounds to crack the list of top-20 rebounders in program history. Last season Conger grabbed 199 boards. Twenty-two St. Bonaventure players have recorded both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds during their careers. The last SBU player to reach both career milestones was 2012 graduate Andrew Nicholson.

Summer Abroad

Redshirt senior Michael Davenport and junior Matthew Wright spent nine days this past summer on European basketball trip through Belgium and France as part of the Global Sport’s Academy’s summer collegiate tour. The two were part of a team which played five games against Belgium squads. They also trained, competed and partook in cultural excursions in Belgium, and mid-way through the visit traveled to France and explored Paris.

CJ Loves Charity

Senior Chris Johnson connected on 87.7 percent of his free throws (57-65) last season, a percentage which ranks 5th all-time in program history for a single season. The senior shot 86.5 percent (32-37) in Atlantic 10 games, which was 5th-best among conference players.

Thanksgiving Throwdown

Fibertech Networks will serve as the presenting game sponsor for Thanksgiving Throwdown between St. Bonaventure and rival Niagara on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 4 p.m. at Blue Cross Arena. This is the seventh time that St. Bonaventure and Fibertech Networks have partnered to showcase a Division I men’s basketball game in Rochester, dating back to 2002. St. Bonaventure basketball and the Rochester region have enjoyed a strong relationship over the years. The game against Niagara marks the 18th time the Bonnies will have played a game in Rochester, and fourth straight year.

Mark Schmidt Head Coach Sixth Season Boston College, 1985

ST. BONAVENTURE MEN’S BASKETBALL •

19th coach in 91 seasons of basketball at St. Bonaventure.

Schmidt was recognized for his remarkable work in rebuilding the Bonnies by being named the 2012 Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.

Schmidt was instrumental in the development of 2012 A-10 Player of the Year and AP Honorable Mention All-American Andrew Nicholson, who ended his career ranked second in school history in scoring (2,103 points) and fourth in rebounds (887). Nicholson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the First Round of the 2012 NBA Draft with the 19th overall pick.

SBU’s 20 victories overall and 10 in the Atlantic 10 in 2011-12 were its most since the 19992000 season, the last time a Bona team had earned an NCAA Tournament bid. The 10 victories also marked just the fourth time in history a Bonaventure team reached double-digit conference triumphs.

In May 2012, St. Bonaventure rewarded Schmidt with a five-year contract extension that runs through the conclusion of the 2018-19 season.

Ahead of schedule with respect to his previous head coaching stint at Robert Morris. During his third and fourth season at RMU, Schmidt posted back-to-back seasons with the same number of wins (14) before guiding the team to a record over .500 (15-14). He guided SBU to 15-win seasons in year two and three, before going over .500 in year four and eight games over in year five last season.

Has recruited and developed 10 players who were drafted into the NBA, including First-Round picks James Posey (#18), David West (#18) and Nicholson.

Success at RMU: brought in Tony Lee, who in 2007-08 was the NEC Player of the Year and currently owns that school’s career rebounding record (751); Jeremy Chappell was 2008-09 NEC POY and graduated as school’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals, double-figure scoring games, games played and starts.

stretch in January? “The A-10 didn’t do us any favors,” he said with a laugh. “But we have to play them some time. No matter how it sets up, by the end, you still have to play all the teams. “It’s a tough stretch against very good teams and some of the best teams in our league, but it’s exciting to have a VCU come in for their first road A-10 game, to have a Xavier come in. I think it’s good, but at the same time it’s really difficult because those are the perennial powers in our league.” Following that stretch, Schmidt’s team will take one of its two byes before opening February with Duquesne (Feb. 2), its lone travel partner this season, in the Reilly Center. Bona will then make its inaugural trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse to take on Butler (Feb. 6) followed by another road game three days later at Rhode Island. Its only other stretch of back-to-back road games comes in mid-January when it travels to Philadelphia twice in the span in four days. Bona alternates between home and away games over its last seven contests, ending with Dayton at UD Arena (March 6) and at home with Fordham (March 9).

the addition of VCU and Butler and the fact Temple and Charlotte still have a year left in the league before departing for other conferences. The Rams and Bulldogs, two of the best mid-major programs in the nation, have a combined three Final Four appearances in the last three years. Add them to what was already one of the top seven or so conferences in the country, and the Bonnies have what is undoubtedly the toughest conference slate of the Schmidt era, perhaps even since its been in the Atlantic 10. “No question,” Schmidt said. “Some people are talking about the Atlantic 10 being as good or better than the Big East. It’s certainly the most challenging with the teams that are always there year-in and year-out and with the additions of VCU and Butler.” The Bonnies, the defending Atlantic 10 champions, will find out how challenging in just the first couple of weeks. After opening on the road at George Washington, they face easily the most brutal part of the schedule with home contests against VCU and Xavier, road games at Temple and Saint Joseph’s and another home game with Saint Louis … with the first and latter two the likely favorites to win the league. Four of those teams (VCU, Xavier, Temple and Saint Louis) made the NCAA Tournament last season while the Hawks, who return all five starters, made it to the NIT. As a group, they finished 122-50 last year. So what was Schmidt’s reaction to such an unforgiving

ST. BONAVENTURE – Eight televised games, a home contest with VCU and a trip to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse highlight the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team’s 2012-’13 Atlantic 10 schedule, released by the conference Thursday afternoon. The Bonnies will play six of their first eight league games on either national or regional television, including back-to-back nationally-televised contests against Xavier (home, Jan. 16) and Temple (away, Jan. 19). Four of their six regionally-televised games will be in the Reilly Center, including their home-opener against Virginia Commonwealth on Jan. 12. The eight televised contests are the most for a St. Bonaventure team in over a decade. It’s a far cry from even a short while ago when the Bonnies went multiple seasons without a single televised affair. “It’s terrific,” said coach Mark Schmidt, who is entering his sixth season on the Bona sideline. “In the past, we were never on TV. We were begging to be on TV. Television helps with recruiting; every kid wants to see themselves, or the family see their son, on television. “And it’s good for the school. You can’t pay that type of money to be on national television that many times and see ‘Bonnies’ across the chest of our players. It’s a great tool for our university to be able to get our name out there.” While the Atlantic 10 docket has always been difficult, Bona will face a particularly arduous task this season with

Last winter, St. Bonaventure capped its most impressive season in a decade by cutting down the nets in Atlantic City after defeating Xavier in the league’s championship game (The schools first ever title). Senior Andrew Nicholson, the league’s Most Outstanding Player for the season, as well as the tournament, ended his A-10 career with a 26 point, 14 rebound, eight block effort that capped his remarkable career. When Nicholson was drafted 19th overall by the Orlando Magic in the June NBA Draft, the Bonnies not only lost over 2,100 career points, 887 rebounds and 244 blocks. Nicholson left head coach Mark Schmidt with one big question: Where do the Bonnies go from here? The answer, as it turns out, maybe have been discovered during that same magical weekend in Atlantic City. While Andrew Nicholson was busy turning the heads of NBA scouts and improving his draft stock, several other Bonnies grew up in front of Mark Schmidt on the league’s biggest stage. In the Bonnies 71-68 quarterfinal win against Saint Joseph’s, sophomore point guard Charloon Kloof scored a career high 19 points and knocked down critical free throws in the game’s waning moments. Kloof ’s sophomore season was really his freshman, as he lost a year of eligibility due to playing a year in prep school in the Canary Islands. Kloof improved leaps and bounds over the course of the season and by year’s end, looked the part of confident play caller, big time athlete and potential scoring point guard. About 24 hours later in the semifinal against UMass, rising senior guard/forward Demitrius Conger nearly posted a triple double: 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Conger can best be described as mercurial; here one day and gone the next.

olson, Cook, Ndoye, Simmons and Houseknecht). Having lost Nicholson’s 18.5 points as well as Cook’s 7.6, you can bet the Bonnies will suffer from growing pains in the paint (though getting RS junior M. Simmons back will help some). Schmidt, however, will be less than afraid to adapt his offensive scheme. At Robert Morris (Schmidt’s previous school) Schmidt was known for his uptempo offense. In 2006 RMU averaged 73.6 points per game and in his final season in Pittsburgh, the Colonials averaged 75.9 points. Schmidt talked in 2008 about his passion for six foot RMU point guard Tony Lee, who he relied on to push the basketball and find easy buckets. He was, as Schmidt said, a jet quick guard who was as tough as the come. This is the kind of player he wanted to help him mold St. Bonaventure basketball when he arrived in Olean. But, after watching Nicholson develop as a freshman, Schmidt knew he needed to play to his team’s strength and build an offense around the big man. He did just that, showing the ability to put his players in the best position to succeed while putting his personal basketball philosophies away. Now, Schmidt has the personnel (and loss of personnel) to let his team push the ball and run. Schmidt has longed for that point guard (like Lee), who he could construct an offense around and in Kloof, it appears he has one. Armed with the quick and athletic 6’3″ point man, and experienced returners in Michael Davenport (redshirt senior), Conger (senior), Mosley (senior), Johnson (senior), Wright (junior) and Gathers (sophomore) the Bonnies cupboard isn’t as bare as many may think.

2012-13

st. Bonaventure men’s BasketBall

Still, he has the athleticism and offensive game that could net him All-League honors in his senior year. Freshman guard Jordan Gathers started the game and notched a career high nine points, showing a comfortability level never seen before. Gathers displayed a rarely seen poise on offense, but must work to improve his jump shot this summer. Not to be forgotten was Chris Johnson’s 14 points off the bench in just 24 minutes. Johnson, a junior college transfer from Canada, became an “instant offense” type benchplayer for the Bonnies who could play the three or four spot. The league final may have been the Nicholson show, but the Bonnies received contributions from freshman center Youssou Ndoye (four points, two rebounds), junior point guard Eric Mosley (seven points) and sophomore shooting guard Matthew Wright (five points). The numbers aren’t overwhelming by any means, but small contributions on the biggest stage in March can go a long way in building confidence for next fall. Ndoye, a 6’11″ center whose game is as raw as they come, has the biggest upside of the group. The Senegal native only picked up a basketball a few years ago, but come March showed major growth after the loss of forward Marquis Simmons (ACL tear) in November. Now, Schmidt must alter his team’s offensive mindset from a halfcourt team who plays inside then out, to a team that pushes the tempo and looks for easy buckets in transition. Without Nicholson, he has no other choice. Simply: The Bonnies will play to their strengths in 2012-2013; their guards. Last season, armed with the best offensive player in the league, the Bonnies scored 70.8 points per game (8th in A-10) and received 31.7 points per game from their frontline players (Nich-
