APP STATE ON THE INTERNET

ALL interviews with coaches should be directed through the Appalachian State Strategic Communications office. Please contact Andrew Clausen at (828) 262-7166 or (704) 301-2818 to arrange an interview time. Coaches are primarily available for interview by phone or in person from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., depending on the team’s travel schedule.

Visit the official Appalachian State Athletics home page on the Internet at www.appstatesports.com. The site offers up-to-date information on all of App State’s varsity sports, including schedules and results, player and coach biographies, as well as the latest news from each of the App State athletic programs.

Interviews with student-athletes are encouraged; however ALL interviews must be arranged through the Strategic Communications office. Interviews will be arranged according to the schedule of each individual athlete and are usually conducted before or after scheduled practices. This policy facilitates the orderly scheduling and completion of the desired interview. All interviews must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance. Please coordinate all requests with the department. App State Strategic Communications will not supply the media with home or cellular telephone numbers for student-athletes. Likewise, training room, locker room and apartment/dormitory areas are considered private player areas and are off-limits to the media.

JohnMark Bentley enters his ninth season as head coach of the Mountaineers after joining the program as assistant coach in 2006. Bentley is coming off a historic year for the Mountaineers as the program received its highest national ranking in history, coming in at No. 23 in the USA Today/NWCA poll at the end of the season after having knocked off nationally-ranked Duke at home. The notable season ended with a Southern Conference regular season championship and SoCon Tournament championship, ending a four-year drought. After a 12-4 finish, Bentley was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for guiding the club to the memorable finish and for guiding heavyweight Denzel Dejournette to a SoCon Wrestler of the Year honor. In the 2014-15 season, Bentley coached the Mountaineers to a second-place finish in both the regular season and the Southern Conference Tournament. For the third consecutive year, Bentley had multiple wreslters advance to the NCAA Championships. Dominic Parisi made his third NCAA BENTLEY’S COACHING PROFILE appearance while Dejournette made their first. Year(s) School Position Bentley was named 2015 Co-SoCon Coach of the Year 2003 Davidson College Assistant coach after guiding the Apps to a 9-8 finish with a 6-1 SoCon mark. 2003-06 Watauga HS Head coach The Apps had two all-SoCon wrestlers in Nick Kee and Appalachian State Assistant coach Denzel Dejournette. Kee was named Freshman of the Year 2006-08 and joined Forrest Przybysz on the all-freshmen team. 2008-09 Appalachian State Associate head coach Bentley saw two wrestlers go to the NCAA championships 2009-pres. Appalachian State Head coach in 2014 as SoCon champions. Parisi won the 125-pound weight class and Dylan Cottrell, 2014 SoCon Freshman of the Year, won at 149 pounds. Coming off of a SoCon title in 2012, Bentley led the Mountaineers to an 8-6 overall mark and a 5-2 record within the conference – good for a second-place regular season finish. Both Dominic Parisi and Zack Strickland advanced to the 2013 NCAA Wrestling championships as at-large selections for their seasons at 125 and 165 pounds, respectively. Bentley led the Mountaineers to the 2012 Southern Conference Championship with a 6-0 record. The squad also finished 21st place at the NCAA tournament. Because of his efforts, Bentley with was named the 2012 SoCon Coach of the Year and finished third in the voting for NCAA National Coach of the Year in 2012. In each of his first two seasons as head coach, Bentley had multiple wrestlers win Southern Conference titles and advance to the national championships. Tony Gravely, Dylan Temple and Austin Trotman were SoCon champions in 2010, while Trotman and Kyle Blevins won their classes in 2011. Bentley was an assistant coach for two seasons at App State before being named associate head coach in 2008. Before ascending to the helm of the program, Bentley assisted 2009 title-winner Frank Celorrio and two-time SoCon champion Scott Ervin, who graduated as App State’s career leader in wins with 114. Since 2006, two Mountaineers have received the league’s Wrestler of the Year honors: Ervin in 2008 and Trotman in 2010. Trotman also received Freshman of the Year accolades in 2008, and both Ervin and Blevins were recognized as the SoCon Tournament Outstanding Wrestler during Bentley’s coaching tenure. Coach Bentley has seen the Black and Gold capture 17 SoCon Wrestler of the Week awards and his wrestlers have captured 12 spots on all-SoCon teams and another eight slots on the all-Freshman team. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Bentley came to Appalachian with vast experience as a coach and wrestler. At North Carolina, Bentley was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion and was twice named team MVP. He was the 2001 ACC Wrestler of the Year and a 2000 University Nationals Freestyle All-American. He ranks ninth in UNC single-season win percentage with a mark of .919 after he went 31-2 in 2000-01. He is sixth all-time with an .851 career winning percentage at Carolina and finished with 92 career wins. He was a three-year member of the UNC Student-Athletic Council and earned a degree in communications in 2001. In 2008, he earned a masters degree in school administration from App State. He began his career as the top assistant at Davidson College in 2002-03. From 2003-2006, he was head coach at Watauga High School in Boone, leading the Pioneers to a third-place finish at the North Carolina State Championships with three individual state titlists in 2006. A three-sport athlete at Avery High School in nearby Newland, N.C., Bentley was the second wrestler in North Carolina high school history to win four state championships. He finished his high school career with a perfect 144-0 record, capped by a National Championship in 1997. Bentley’s brother, Matthew, wrestled at Appalachian from 1992-96. He and his wife, Aaron, reside in Seven Devils, N.C. with their daughter, Katie Elizabeth and son, Luke Franklin.

Ryan LeBlanc enters his first year as Appalachian State University wrestling’s assistant coach after being announced on Aug. 5, 2016.

LeBlanc joined Appalachian after spending two years working for the State University of New York at Cortland. He started as a graduate assistant wrestling coach before transitioning to a dual position in coaching and alumni engagement. LeBlanc helped guide the team to a 7th and 13th place finish in the NCAA tournament including seven national qualifiers, four NWCA Scholar All-Americans, four NCAA All-Americans and two separate individual national champions. He also helped create the periodization plan for wrestling, strength and cardiovascular training throughout his seasons. “I am honored to be a Mountaineer,” LeBlanc said. “The Appalachian State University Wrestling program appealed to me as it represents a well-rounded balance of both athletics and academics. I truly believe in Coach JohnMark Bentley’s vision for the program and am excited to work with the kind of student-athletes this program attracts.”

Prior to SUNY-Cortland, LeBlanc amassed a career wrestling record of 103-51 at Indiana University. During his collegiate career, he was a three-time NCAA qualifier and finished in the round of 12 as a senior, a three-time academic all-American, a two-year captain and a Big Ten Academic all-Conference team member for four straight seasons. LeBlanc was also selected as the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, one of the most prestigious conference awards in college athletics. First awarded in 1915, the Medal of Honor is given to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who attains “the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work.” He graduated in 2014 from Indiana with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science before receiving his master’s in sports management in 2016 at SUNY-Cortland.

Second Season Bloomburg, 2013 COACHES PLAYERS

Roosa will enter his second year on the Mountaineer coaching staff after joining for the 2015-16 season. Roosa enjoyed a brief coaching stint at Buffalo and a very successful wrestling career at Bloomsburg University before jumping into coaching. In his four years as a starter and team captain for the Huskies, Roosa was ranked in the top-20 in all four years at 149 pounds. As a senior in 2013, Roosa finished third in the Eastern Wrestling League while leading his team to a third place finish. Roosa qualified for for the 2013 NCAA Championship along with earning All-American status at the University Nationals. Roosa’s senior Huskie team won Bloomsburg’s only outright EWL dual meet title and finished the season ranked 14th in country. Roosa graduated from Bloomsburg with a degree in communications. Roosa is the son of Shelli and Mike of Danville, Pa. Roosa has two siblings, David and Michael.

First Season Appalachian State, 2014

Dominic Parisi was announced as the volunteer assistant coach on Aug. 5, 2016. Parisi joins the wrestling coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach after graduating from Appalachian State in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in recreation management with a concentration in outdoor experiential education before getting his master’s in higher education with a concentration in community college and university leadership at Appalachian as well.

Parisi amassed a collegiate wrestling record of 48-21 as a Mountaineer, winning the 125-pound Southern Conference division his senior year as well as being named to the NWCA All-Academic team. As a junior recovering from a sophomore campaign that was cut short by a knee injury, he placed third at the Hokie Open and Keystone Classic before earning a round of 12 finish at the NCAA’s. “I am beyond excited and motivated to help coach and give back to a program that has done so much for me during my entire collegiate career as a wrestling student-athlete,” Parisi said.

DOUG GILLIN DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SECOND YEAR AT APPALACHIAN STATE ALMA MATER: SUNY CORTLAND, 1991 Doug Gillin was named director of athletics at Appalachian State University on Feb. 27, 2015. He officially began in the role on April 6, 2015. Gillin, 47, possesses more than two decades of professional experience in collegiate athletics, most recently as deputy director of athletics at the University of Missouri. He spent three years at Missouri and played a prominent role in the Tigers’ transition to the Southeastern Conference. At Mizzou, Gillin was involved in all facets of the athletics department’s financial planning and budget development, was a member of the department’s strategic plan development team and oversaw all external operations, including the Tiger Scholarship Fund development unit, Mizzou Sports Properties, strategic communications and game operations. Most notably, he helped lead the University’s athletics capital campaign and was involved in a $102 million facilities enhancement plan for football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Additionally, he was responsible for all facets of Missouri’s day-to-day operations in the absence of the athletics director, had direct oversight over men’s basketball and was part of a three-person administrative team that oversaw the Tigers’ football program. Prior to his arrival at Missouri in 2012, Gillin spent a decade in North Carolina in various roles with ISP Sports/IMG College, the country’s leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company. During his 10-year stint with Winston-Salem-based ISP/IMG, he served as the company’s senior vice president (2002-07), executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president for college properties (2010-12). In those roles, he managed the company’s entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees and more than 90 university and conference partnerships. Before joining the ISP/IMG corporate headquarters, Gillin spent the first nine years of his athletics career on college campuses. He began as an assistant ticketing/business office director at Lehigh (1993-94) then served as an assistant marketing director at New Mexico (1994-95) and Missouri (1995-97). In 1997, he became the general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties before taking the same position with Syracuse Sports Properties in 1999. The Binghamton, N.Y. native was a four-year letterwinner in ice hockey at SUNY Cortland from 1987-91. He was a two-time team MVP and was selected as the squad’s co-captain in 1990. He graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1991 with a B.S. in physical education (sports management concentration). He went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education from Ohio University in 1993.

BOONE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA Boone, North Carolina, is a college town in the best sense—a place where people say ‘Hello’ on the street and with a vibrant downtown a block from campus. Its eclectic hub, known as King Street, features specialty shops, restaurants and cultural attractions that appeal to students, parents, residents and tourists. Whether in town for a weekend or a four-year education, many people find it difficult to leave Boone. An ethic of sustainability resounds through the campus and local community, as evident through an on-campus electricity-generating wind turbine, a commitment to making new buildings efficiently designed and LEED® certified, a biodiesel-powered public transportation system, and research and academic degree programs that focus on issues related to energy, economics and the environment. State’s Largest Wind Turbine – This community-scale, 100-kilowatt wind turbine stands 153 feet and feeds enough electricity directly to the grid to power 15 homes. It was paid for primarily through student funds and in partnership with the university-affiliated utility, New River Light and Power. Aside from producing clean energy, the turbine serves as an educational monument to Appalachian’s ethic of sustainability. Howard Knob – Located just a half mile from downtown Boone, this peak has an elevation of 4,420 feet and is known more commonly as Howard’s Knob. CHANCELLOR DR. SHERI N. EVERTS

Dr. Sheri N. Everts joined Appalachian State University as its seventh leader in July 2014. She had been provost and vice president for academic affairs at Illinois State University since 2008. A Nebraska native who attended elementary school in a oneroom schoolhouse, Everts earned a bachelor’s degree in English instruction and secondary education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After teaching middle school and high school English, she returned to UNL to earn a master’s degree in literacy education and English and a doctorate in administration, curriculum and instruction. Everts began her higher education career in 1994 as an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Nebraska Omaha. She rose through the academic and administrative ranks at UNO, becoming interim senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs in 2006 before leaving in 2008 for Illinois State University. Under Chancellor Everts’ leadership, Appalachian welcomed the most diverse first-year class in university history. Her priorities have been support for faculty and staff; wellness, health and safety; increased diversity; sustainability; integrated global learning; student research; and civic engagement. She also has worked to secure the necessary resources to energize and sustain these strategic initiatives while maintaining slow and steady enrollment growth.

ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

DR. ALAN HAUSER

Dr. Alan J. Hauser is in his 30th year as Faculty Chairperson of Athletics at Appalachian State University. Appointed to the position in October 1986, Hauser has served on the Athletic Council since 1979. In his role, Hauser acts as the liason between academics and athletics, representing the voice of Appalachian’s faculty in its dealings with the athletic department as well as speaking on behalf of studentathletes when dealing with faculty members. He often accompanies many athletic programs on road trips and is a regular at home events. Hauser came to Appalachian as an assistant professor of philosophy and religion in 1972. He served as chairperson of Appalachian’s Philosophy and Religion Department from 1982 until 1997. A member of numerous committees since joining the faculty, Hauser served 12 years on the Faculty Senate, including two years as chairperson. He also chaired the Faculty Assembly for three years. A 1967 graduate of Concordia Teachers College, Hauser earned a master’s degree from Concordia Seminary in 1968 and his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1972. Hauser currently chairs the NCAA Academics, Eligibility and Compliance cabinet and is also a member of its Degree Completion committee. He formerly served as the Southern Conference’s delegate to the NCAA Division I Management Council. Hauser and his wife Gail have four daughters: Debi, Staci, Elizabeth and Jacqueline.
