KTC buses for women soon PORVORIM: To make travelling more convenient for women commuters the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) will soon be running exclusive buses for women on the Panaji-Mapusa route during peak hours, transport minister Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar told the assembly on Wednesday. The suggestion was earlier made by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo while speaking on demands for grants to transport in the assembly on Wednesday. Lobo said women commuters face a lot of problems due to overloading in the buses. "Buses are packed as if commuters are cattle. As a result many incidents of

molestation happen in packed buses," said Lobo urging the minister to start buses exclusively for women on some routes. Dhavalikar further told the House that 100 new buses to be procured shortly, will be used on routes where there are few or no buses plying. However, priority will be given to 47 villages on the Western Ghat route. The River Navigation department (RND) plans to start Ro-Ro ferry service on pilot basis. The Ro-Ro ferry will be constructed in the next six months either at the RND's workshop or given to a private party for construction. As for starting new ferry routes on three routes - Dona Paula-Panaji, Aldona-Panaji and Curchorem-Bambolim-

the government will appoint a consultant to design the vessels. The department has received seven bids for tenders floated but no decision was taken for there was a huge disparity in two bids. "One bidder has quoted 12 lakh and another 43 lakh," said Dhavalikar explaining why no decision has been taken. 'Entry tax on' Defending the government's decision of levying entry tax on outstation vehicles beginning April 15, he said other states levy charges at every point. "On the Belgaum to Bangalore route, vehicles have to pay 600 as toll fee," said Dhavalikar. "Even at most tourist places in other states including temples there is an entry fee, " he added.

Little Olive Ridleys crawl out into the sea

MANDREM: Hatchlings from only the second Olive Ridley turtle nesting of a delayed season at Morjim finally crawled to sea with the summer moving slowly towards its peak. This season, the first turtle appeared for nesting on December 7, 2012, and laid 121 eggs. Around 106 hatchlings had emerged, and struggled back into the sea a few weeks ago. But the second nesting was only on February 14, when 134 eggs were laid. "On Wednesday evening, only 89 hatchlings came out and were helped into the sea," a source said.

Goa employment subsidy scheme for industry

PANAJI: The government has introduced the Goa state employment subsidy scheme for industries in order to give a boost to provide employment to local youth, Goa industries minister Mahadev Naik told the Goa legislative assembly on Thursday. Responding to Dabolim Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho, Naik said that industrial units that engaged 80% of local manpower or regular employment are eligible for the subsidy. Naik also informed that there are 22 industrial estates in Goa. In these, 304 industrial units are closed and 1557 units are functioning. The largest is the Verna industrial estate with 300 industrial units in it. The second largest is Kundaim with 230 units and the third largest is Sancoale with 133 units. Three industrial estates at Quitol, Shiroda and Panchawadi are yet to start.

Forest department guards and officials along with the residents of Temb, Morjim, assisted the tiny baby turtles into the water. The third nesting of the season was on March 4, 2013, when a total of 130 eggs were laid. "This is the only one that is remaining," a source said. The previous 2011-12 season was a better one with around 13 nestings on Morjim beach. Climate change, increase in mechanized fishing ,illumination along the beach as well as human interference is attributed to the decline in arrivals of Olive Ridley turtles, a source from the range forest off e, wildlife, Campal, told TOI.

‘India sitting on plastic time bomb’ New Delhi: “We are sitting on a plastic time bomb,” the Supreme Court said on Wednesday after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) informed it that India generates 56 lakh tonnes of plastic waste annually, with Mumbai accounting for a staggering 408.27 tonnes a day. The CPCB told the court that the “total plastic waste which is collected and recycled in the country is estimated to be 9,205 tonnes per day (approximately 60% of the total plastic waste) and 6,137 tonnes remain uncollected and littered”. The four metros are major culprits in plastic waste generation, with Delhi producing 689.52 tonnes a day, followed by Chennai (429.39 tonnes), Kolkata (425.72 tonnes) and Mumbai. The figures only serve to confirm the common sight of waste littering industrial, residential and slum areas across cities and towns.

Government withdraws Socorro IT park proposal

PANAJI: The government of Goa has, in principle , decided to withdraw the proposal to have an IT park at Socorro, information technology minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa legislative assembly on Thursday. Parrikar said that the reason why the government has withdrawn the proposal. Moreover, some local residents

Tourist Season

have approached the high court of Bombay at Goa on the grounds that part of the land where the IT park is proposed is in private forest. Having incurred an expenditure of over Rs 1 crore on the proposed Socorro IT park, the government has now decided not to waste any more money on it.

A shocked court has asked civic authorities of five cities— Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Faridabad and Bangalore —to submit reports on the steps taken under relevant rules to contain dumping of plastic waste and implementation of the ban on gutka. As 40% of plastic waste is not recycled, the daily addition to untreated plastic in Mumbai is estimated to be 163.2 tonnes, Delhi 275.6 tonnes, Chennai (171.6 tonnes) and Kolkata (170 tonnes). This waste is a source of continuing pollution as plastic is not biodegradable and poisons the environment for decades. The pollution control board said a survey conducted across 60 major cities had found that 15,342.46 tonnes of plastic waste were generated every day, amounting to 56 lakh tonnes a year. Additional solicitor general Mohan Jain presented a worrying report on plastic waste management

across the country. Apext court suggests two-pronged way to deal with plastic waste New Delhi: Stunned by the Central Pollution Control Board’s figures on plastic waste being produced in the country, the Supreme Court has called for prompt action. While additional solicitor general Mohan Jain presented a worrying report on plastic waste management, another additional solicitor general, Indira Jaising, painted an equally grim health scenario by informing the court that the ban on gutka and pan masala laced with tobacco had not been effective due to manufacturers beating the law and a lethargic state machinery compounding matters. Responding to the situation, the SC felt the nonimplementation of law due to abject “failure of governance at the grassroots level” could be countered by adopting a two-pronged strategy for

effective implementation of plastic waste management and ban on gutka and pan masala mixed with chewing tobacco and nicotine. Taking a cue from the CPCB’s survey, it chose Delhi, Bangalore, Agra, Faridabad and Jaipur and asked the commissioners of their civic bodies to file affidavits within four weeks detailing the steps taken under the Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2000 and the Plastic Waste Rules, 2011 to dispose the waste in a safe place. “We have a habit of collecting garbage from cities and dumping them in villages. Representatives of villagers have stopped keeping themselves abreast with the problems arising from such dumping,” the bench said. It also asked state pollution control boards and the CPCB to furnish the reports they have been mandated under the law as supervisors of plastic waste disposal by municipal bodies.

BJP MLA wants sex education in Goa

PANAJI: Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in Goa demanded to introduce sex education subject in colleges. Taking part in discussion on higher education demands, Calangute BJP MLA Michael Lobo said that government should introduce sex education in colleges to stop spread of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV. "Sex

education is the need of the hour," he added. He also added that as Goa is touristic state and hence sex education in Colleges is required and also government should appoint counselors in colleges. The Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) center at Goa medical college and hospital (GMC) provides ART to about 2,000 HIV persons, including 250300 children.

Friday, 5th April, 2013 even people with minimal artistic talent can learn to freehand geometric shapes or floral designs. While most nail art designs are created simply using various colors

beginners may choose to improvise by creating their designs with a bobby pin or toothpick. Regardless of which application method you choose, it’s best to use a cotton swab and pure acetone to remove any

of nail polish, you can add sparkle to your designs by mixing glitter into one or more of the polish colors before painting your nails. Using stick-on jewels is another great way to jazz up a simple motif. Tiny stickers can make it easier to create more elaborate designs. Once you’ve finished your design, proper maintenance will help keep your nail art in top condition for as long as possible. Apply a coat of protective clear nail polish every two or three days for the duration of your manicure. Wear gloves when doing tasks that may damage your nails and resist the urge to pick or bite your nails. Is there a trendy shape and length for nails these days? Long? Short? Square?

polish application mistakes. Work as fast as possible, since nail polish dries fairly quickly. To save time, have a separate brush for each color of polish.

NAIL ART

Nail art, the practice o f painting decorative designs on your fingernails, is a fun way to brighten up your everyday look or accessorize a special occasion outfit. There are a variety of designs available, ranging from subtle and understated to funky and outrageous. For example, you could choose to paint flowers on your nails for a date or spell out the name of your favorite athletic team on the day of the big game. While the more intricate designs are best left to a professional, it’s possible to create simple nail art at home. The key to any successful nail design is starting with clean and well-shaped nails. Nails should be neatly trimmed and filed before painting. Even the most accomplished artist can’t create an attractive design on nails that have been bitten down to stubs. If your natural nails are beyond repair, consider applying artificial acrylic nails before painting your design. Once you’ve painted your nails with a neutral base coat, you can draw your design using a special thin-tipped nail brush. However,

Make Up – Basics Make up is important! Because everyone wants to look beautiful. As for me from a sales girl right to a model need to look nice. As this creates an impact in ones career and life at large as people believe what they see and if you look appealing they feel like listening and working with you. But I also believe in the fact that “no amount of make up can mask an ugly heart”

There are many different methods you can use to come up with nail art designs. Many beginners like to copy from pictures they have found on the Internet or in books. Some larger nail salons also offer classes for people interested in learning how to do their own art. However,

Here below are some Easy Tips On How To Do Your Own Make Up: • Foundation: Apply evenly to the whole face always try to achieve as natural look as possible. Apply concealer to cover spots or pimples. • Powder: Apply freely with a brush to fix the make up. • Eyebrows: First remove the extra hairs with tweezers if necessary. Underline the eyebrows with eyebrow pencil and brush them upward and outward with an eyebrow brush. Apply them with a small applicator brush and smooth out with your finger to achieve a softer and more natural look. • Eyeliner: Use it to highlight the eyes with the appropriate color black or brown depending on the look u want to achieve. • Eye shadows: Use natural tones over the eyelids and darker tones in the fold of the upper eyelid and

the outer corner of the eye. • Mascara: Apply to eye lashes in order to lengthen or thicken them as needed. • Blush: Should be applied over the cheekbone with upward strokes. • Lipstick and lip liner: Use lipstick one tone darker than your natural lip color. Trace the lips with a pencil in the same tone. Mix the pencil with the lipstick using a small lipstick brush to create a more natural look. This gives your lips a matt effect. • Gloss: To be applied for a more glossy fresh feeling. Round? “The newest trend sported by the hottest Hollywood divas is the stiletto/pointyshaped nail, which is characterized by a lovely pointed shape that elongates the fingers. Nail shape can transform the aspect of your hands instantly and completely. Nails are the new accessory! They play a very important role when it comes to the beauty of your hands. The need to enhance their beauty has led to the development of new nail-art designs and new nail shapes. “If you’re tired of square-shaped nails and want to give your nails a more glamorous, seductive and edgy look, turn your attention toward stiletto-shaped nails. It looks fabulous and is perfect for natural nails, but also works great on gel/ acrylic nails.” Fashion’s “it” things inspire obsessions and frantic longings in consumers. There was the “it” bag, which made way for the “it” shoe, which made way for the latest “it” thing: nail art. Pop stars are analyzed almost as much for their nails as they are for their clothes; designers obsess over the perfect nail hue for models to wear in their runway shows; “Nail art really isn’t a budding trend.

06 Bharatanatyam, in Balasaraswati's words, is an artistic yoga for revealing the spiritual through the corporeal. It is the most popular Indian classical dance in South India, and the most ancient of all the classical dance forms. The term "Bharatanatyam" was used by Purandara Dasa (14841564). Later, Ghanam Krishnayyar's songs speak about a devadasi as an expert at Bharatanatyam. Subramania Bharathi also mentions Bharatanatyam. Some believe the term "Bharatanatyam" partly owes its name to sage Bharata who wrote the fundamental text on the technique of Natya, classical Indian dance theatre, traces of which persist in Bharata natyam, Odissi, Mohiniattam and Kuchipudi, and, so some extent, Kathak. In Tamil Nadu, Natya was called Koothu, Aadal, Nrittam, Layam, Nartanam, Natam and by other names. According to Natya Shastra, Brahma created the Panchamaveda, the Fifth Veda (NatyaVeda), a quintessence of the main four Vedas, and gave it to Indra to have the gods (devas) to perform natya, but Indra stated, "They are neither able to receive it and to maintain it, nor they are fit to understand it and make use of it... The sages who know the mystery of the 4 Vedas and have fulfilled their vows are capable of maintaining NatyaVeda and putting it into practice". Obeying the fiat of Lord Brahma, sage Bharata wrote down Natyashastra. Bharata together with his 100 disciples and the Gandharavas with Apsaras performed natya, nrtta

and nrtya before Siva. Shiva improved and modified Bharata's interpretation and instructed the science of dance to Thandu Maharishi. This type of dance derived the name Thandava, known as the Cosmic Dance of Shiva. Shiva taught Lasya Natya to Parvathi who passed it on to Usha, the daughter of Banasura. Through Usha this style was passed on to the Gopis of Dwaraka who in turn passed it on to the maidens of Sowrashtra. Even though they were found incapable of representing other characters in Brahma's dance dramas, the Gods and the Goddesses very well represent themselves, and have been passing the art of the heavenly dance through many other human channels, and created a number of styles ranging from Odissi to Bharatanatyam dances.

and the 15th was Nrittam. More than 18 kinds of Nritta were being performed in the Vishnu temples and dances like Ajappanatanam and Kukutanatanam were performed in the Shiva temples. The devadasis were wellversed in Sanskrit and other languages, such as Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, etc., as they had to adapt compositions to suit the audience. The music and the dance was of 2 types: margi (mystic or spiritual) and desi (regional varieties of pop or folk dance). The devadasi tradition gradually degraded and

Bharatanatyam Bharata natyam has been undergoing a lot of change over the centuries. It has always been mostly performed by women. Not so long ago the Hindu temples in South India had dancers-priestesses called devadasis who would sing, dance Dasi Attam (original version of Bharatnatyam), play many musical instruments. Out of the sixteen upacharas (offerings) offered to God in temples, the 14th was vocal and instrumental music

resulted in creation of various devadasi castes. Initially, devadasis lead a very strict and celibate life and were not allowed to have a family. Later the kings invited some devadasis to the royal courts, and such dancers became Rajanartakis, and gradually became royal concubines. The Muslim and then the British colonial rule has completely destroyed the devadasi

Artist on the rise : Youngblood Hawke

Inspired by the Herman Wouk novel of the same name, Youngblood Hawke was born out of late night creative musings between longtime friends Sam Martin and Simon Katz. Exhausted by two years of touring with their former band and the general turbulence that comes with

music industry success, Martin and Katz looked for a more simple creative outlet where they could write and share music with friends and family without commercial pressures. Katz's long time friend Tasso Smith moved to Los Angeles from Texas to join the band when he heard the first demos, and Alice Katz, who was a key part of the original songwriting sessions, joined as well. To round out the lineup they recruited drummer and friend Nik

Hughes. Youngblood Hawke captures the sound of 5 friends in mid-journey. It is the snapshot of a state of mind where, one mountain has been climbed, and there are more in the distance. But for right now, the view is beautiful. "There was no plan," says Youngblood Hawke's lead singer, Sam Martin, of the band's rise from the ashes in 2011. Martin describes Youngblood Hawke's sound as infusing "elements of pop, rock, indie, dance, and even a little hip hop." The band's first single "We Come Running" encapsulates that sentiment, and even features the Los Angeles Children's Choir. Fast forward to 2013, and YBH is signed to Republic Records and prepping their debut album, Wake Up.

tradition. In Tamil Nadu the styles of Bharatanatyam were preserved in practice mostly by the gurus and performers of the Isai Velalar caste. In the first half of the 19th century much of Bharathanatyam was redefined by four brothers known today as the Tanjore Quartet. The Tanjore Quartet simplified and systematized all the basic steps of dance proper into sets of dance steps, adavus. Each Bharatanatyam adavu is combined with others to produce jathis, series of steps based upon the rhythms of the music. The brothers wrote music specifically for Bharata natyam, and introduced a different sequence (margam) for Bharatanatyam dances. In the 20th century, such prominent Bharatanatyam guru's as Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer and Krishna Iyer made their significant contributions. The social status and image of Bharata natyam was raised by Rukminidevi Arundale, the founder of Kalakshetra in Chennai, who took some European ballet classes and later started teaching a simplified Kalakshetra style invented by her after having learnt some of the Pandanallur style of Bharatnatyam in a record 3 years' time. The authentic Bharata natyam is still deeply rooted in the spiritual Hindu heritage.

Recognizing the trend, the Royal Ontario Museum is holding talks about fashion as an art form. “If you saw the Gaultier exhibit ...they started to play with some very theatrical elements including these holographic images,” says Jeanne Beker of FashionTelevision. “So these multimedia shows are, I think, really welcome, really interesting, and I think we should be seeing a lot more of them.”Beker, who has written about the fashion world for more than 30 years, argues it’s time museums looked to contemporary design and its impact on the popular imagination. “Let's get people in there. Let's give young people, and us old people too, a reason to come and celebrate. I mean are museums essentially not about humanity and about our culture and about where we stand on this planet as human beings? I think it's the perfect fit,” she says. Margarita (cocktail)

It is a cocktail consisting of tequila mixed with an orange-flavoured liqueur and lime or lemon juice, often served with salt on the glass rim. It is the most common tequila-based cocktail in the United States. The drink is served shaken with ice, on the rocks, blended with ice (frozen margarita) or without ice (straight up).The IBA (IBA Official list of Cocktails) standard is 7:4:3, that is, 50% tequila, 29% Cointreau and 21% fresh lime juice. KAT’S DATES ARE WASTED

Katrina Kaif is in a dilemma. Having reached the pinnacle of her career, she is not able to greenlight every film that comes her way. And being so choosy can ad up to losing precious time. Sources say that Bollywood’s No 1 diva has done less shooting in the last few months than all her contemporaries, because she only wants to do films that will suit her status. And many a time, Kat has seen her decisions going awry. She apparently quit Aditya Chopra’s Gunday because it was reportedly not good enough for her and chose to do Bang Bang with Hrithik Roshan. But what Kat proposed, untoward circumstances disposed. The film has been delayed — firstly because Hrithik was said to be reworking portions of the script and secondly, because of the strife in Kashmir. So, Kat was forced to sit at home and twiddle her thumbs. She has got one of the biggest films of the year — Dhoom 3. But the unfortunate bit is that since Aamir Khan is shuttling between Raju Hirani’s P.K. and Adi’s film, some more of her dates were wasted. It is ironical then, that Kat is being prudent about her film choices and yet finds herself unable to decide what to do with all the “free time” forcibly coming her way.

triple sec, or blue curaçao yielding the blue margarita. When sweeter fruit juices or freshly puréed fruits are added to the margarita, the amount of orange-flavored liqueur is often reduced or eliminated entirely. In addition to orange-flavored liqueurs, secondary liqueurs may occasionally be added to the cocktail, including melon-flavored or black raspberry-flavored. Fresh lime juice Freshly squeezed lime juice is the key ingredient. The most common lime in the U.S. is the thick-skinned Persian lime. However, margaritas in Mexico are generally made with Mexican limes (Key limes). These are small, thinskinned limes and have a more tart and an often bitter flavor compared to Persian limes. Margaritas made with lemon have a softer taste, especially when Meyer lemons are used. Other fruits Alternate fruits and juice mixtures can also be used in a margarita. Many recipes call for a splash of orange juice.

When the word “margarita” is used by itself, it typically refers to the lime or lemon juice margarita, but when other juices are used, the fruits are typically added as adjectives in the name; with lime juice or lemon juice added to give it a characteristic margarita flavor (a wedge of lime is often added to the glass). Ingredients 1/2 lime, halved 45ml Tequila 30ml Cointreau (triple sec) 45ml lime juice Method of preparation: Step 1 Wet rim of glass with a piece of lime, then dip into salt to give a salt rim. Step 2 Fill a cocktail shaker 2/3 full of ice, then add the alcohol and lime juice, shake, then strain into the prepared glass. Step 3 Garnish and serve over ice and don’t forget to dish up with an extra wedge of lime.

TRIPLE ROLE FOR HRITHIK IN KRRISH 3

Can one really have enough of Hrithik Roshan? Apparently not. Sources say that the lighteyed actor has a triple role in the latest instalment of their superhero franchise directed by father Rakesh Roshan. Naturally, there is that much more excitement around this. Rakesh said, “He is playing Rohit the father and he also plays Krishna and Krrish.” Yup, when he is the simpleton, he’s Krishna and when he’s the superman, he is Krrish. Imran’s cars registered with the number 1318

Imran Khan, like most successful actors, has a fleet of cars. And all of them have the registration number 1318. The reason for the fixation is — Imran’s birthday is on January 13, while his wife Avantika Malik’s date of birth is July 18. He considers both the numbers lucky for him and his family. The Big Story

13

A word with Ricky & David D’souza )Directors – Tito’s( It is a story that fairytales are made of, except this is one’s a reality, one that’s there for all to see, experience and most importantly...enjoy. The journey started way back in 1971. Tito Henry De Souza, a pilot by profession and his wife Lucille who worked at the American Consulate in Kenya came down to Goa in an effort to start life afresh. Tito Begun managing the Miramar based Hotel Solmar while Lucille took up employment with the Salgaonkars. Then, in May 1971, sensing a lucrative

business opportunity of catering to the needs of the emerging Goan Tourism industry, the couple sold their house in Arpora and rented a Beach facing property in Baga and started a restaurant. It soon gained fame as a place where one could happily touch into scrumptious food while listening to the soothing rhythms of the Arabian sea. Tito was so new to the business of catering to tourists that he wasn’t even aware that something like season and off season existed. He kept his restaurant open even during the rains. The place soon gained frame as more than just an eatery. At a time when maps and travel guides were not popular, Tito’s became the .social and information nerve center for tourists Though the place was officially named Rich Davy Restaurant, it was more popular as Tito’s. Why? Simply because Tito was the guy everyone

knew. Tito was the one who dished out the drinks and the food. It was Tito who took care of his guests and ensured that they had a great experience. Hence, it was more common to hear people say ‘Let’s go to Tito’s rather than ‘Let go to .’Rich Davy Cut to 2011. Today brand Tito’s is so famous that it has in fact, become synonymous with brand Goa. To put it simply, outside our sunny little state, when people think of a holiday in Goa. It’s considered incomplete without a visit to Tito’s or any of the other properties under their brand umbrella. Tito’s is currently one of Goa’s best equipped

and designed discotheque catering to everyone, right from VVIPs, to celebrities and of course, scores of international and domestic tourist who flock Goa all round the years. Despite their growth, Tito’s has tried to retain a little of the old charm via their menu. Though it has undergone numerous changes over the past 40 years, some of Tito and Lucille’s signature dishes and recipes like beef steak, fish .fillect etc have retained their spot and are still going strong Tito’s is presently headed by brothers, Ricardo aka Ricky and David de Souza who have been at the helm of affairs since their father, Tito’s demise. The brothers have done a phenomenal job of popularizing and expanding the brand. From one single nightclub cum eatery, today, they have a wide range of properties including Cafe Mambo, Retro Bar, The Club, Red Square, World Cafe, Tito’s Countryard, Cape Town Cafe, Cafe Del Mar, Cocktails and Dreams, Kamaki, and event management company, a

hotel, supermarkets, a financial consultancy, a real estate and construction company and a range of in-house spirits under the Tito’s umbrella. The future, too, is looking as sparkly as lights that jazz up their discos. “We want to go public. And since we are a Goan brand, we would love the public of Goa themselves to be a part of us and own the brand along with us.” says Ricky. He adds that a number of people have come aboard and continue to show interest in becoming a part of the brand. “When more people come in, they each come with their own vision. Unfortunately, India family brands find it difficult to grow and to sustain growth because they prefer to

retain management within the family. If growth is the target, one has to bring in professionals to manage the business and push it further. Hence, we have on board with us a number of professional managers to help us develop and diversify the brand. That apart, quite a few smaller properties have shown an interest in joining us. However, we insist that they first clear up their systems and get them completly on track and then come in. After all, it’s a matter a long term survival and we want to do things the right way from the start itself,” .Ricky explains The interesting aspect of their growth story is that though they have so many properties under the brand, each comes with it’s own identity and unique selling point (USP). Has that been a conscious decision? “Yes and No,” says David. Explaining this he says. “Once a place becomes popular, everyone wants to come in. We hand to find a way of segregating the crowd. Consequently, Tito’s Courtyard

which caters to a certain clientele while the club is where you will find tourists who come with the ‘must visit Tito’s to party’ aim. Mambos, meanwhile, has a strict ‘couples only’ policy. Hence, while women are encourage to come and party and even given free entry and drinks on the house, stages are strictly not allowed. Cocktails & Dreams caters to an upmarket Western clientele while Capetown is for the high spenders and people we personally know. Till recently we didn’t even charge an entry at Capetown. Kamaki, which peaks between 3 a.m. and 6 p.m. caters to all the night birds. Our new property, Red Square is touted to be one of the hottest partying destinations. Spread over a huge area, it have a massive sound proof area. We also plan to introduce ”.fight night there with rings for kickboxing matches Ricky adds, “We are constantly looking for new ways to entertain our partrons. At Tito’s Courtyard, last year we introduced the concept of architectural video mapping. For our 2011 year end party, we are planning a signature event with live intertainment, lazer lights and holograms floating in the air amidst fog. Our goal is to make this venue the ultimate family entertainment destination where entire ”.famillies can come in and have a good time Innovation and diversifaction is the mantra of their success story. “We are currently celebrating our 40th anniversary and Tito’s has rightly been described as an institution. Se yes, it feels great to be a part of something os popular. It’s an achievement that we are definitely proud of,” says David. Part of their diversifaction plant includes that of increasing their presence in the supermarkets segment. “We also want to get into the finance segment aim to be one go Goa’s leading non banking financial concern (NBFC). It’s a simple policy, give us a strong business plan and we will give you the finance for it along with helping you set up and grow your business. We also want to enhance our consultancy services. A number of freigners and Indians want to invest in Goa and need someone to facilitate activities like sonsulting, getting licensing regulations, etc. That’s where we will come .in,” Ricky says Among their many ventures, the brothers also successfully run the business of selling sewage treatment plants. “We haven’t really marketed it too aggressively as sewage doesn’t really compliment the image of being the most popular entertainment provider. But yes, we also deal in this. We provide the plants to a wide clientele ranging from owners of a six bedroom house to those of a 200 room hotel. We are also currently in the process of attempting to build them in fibre glass versus their traditional cement .forms,” says Ricky Considering their enviable position in the tourism and

entertainment industry, what do they feel about the Goan government’s tourism related policies? Are they growth conducive?, “The current government is definitely pro tourism,” says David. A section of the industry is debating the quality of tourists the state gets. They feel the government should now concentrate on attracting the big spenders, what is their view on this? “Goa’s USP is its people. If you only get the high end tourists, unless they want to see the Goan culture, what will they do here? More importantly, how will they help the locals, especially the daily operators and the small eatery owners? They are also a vital part of the tourism industry. The big spenders will want a certain type of holiday experience that only a limited number of venues will be able to offer them. Hence, we also need the budget conscious tourists. Personally, I feel the government is doing absolutely fine with the types of tourist they are attracting to the state. Most of these are the people who will patronize those small 10 table eateries, owners of rental taxis and bike .and all other such small industry players.” he adds Our core business focus remains that of lending the“ brand name to enhance the growth of the entertainment field by bringing in an increased number of Indian tourists and giving them a true Goan experience. That apart, we want to concentrate on improving our image and consequently, corporatize and market it even further. Also in the pipeline is a project to develop their own fashion range with items ranging from clothes, beach accessories, towels, mugs, key chains, etc as well as their own liquor brand. We already have our inhouse wine, beer and rum brand all of which make for perfect souvenir pieces. We will continue with our association with Femina and their Miss India contestants for our annual calendars. We want to become a truly internationally recognized name for everything that spells .entertainment,” Ricky concludes

There is a new Women's Police Cell that deals with crimes against women. HEALTH Obesity Management Obesity management can be a fruitful exercise only if the patient shows as much dedication towards treatment compliance as possible. Based on our expertise and experience of treating obesity for the last 35 years, we have observed that certain modifications in lifestyle can go a long way in showing successful results in most cases of obesity. In addition, our qualified and experienced nutritionist from London particularly ensures that we give our patients nothing but the best of diet and lifestyle tips that have been scientifically proved helpful. For obesity management, the patient should be put in a negative energy balance - ideally 500-1000 calories less than their recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Ideally, the person should lose 0.5-1 kg per week. To lose weight in a healthy manner and to sustain the weight-loss, 10 principles have been highlighted below: Do not skip breakfast: Fuel the brain and the body. A good breakfast kick-starts metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories during the day. It might be a challenge to fit it into your busy lifestyle but a healthy breakfast goes a long way in controlling your weight in the long term. Eat protein with complex carbohydrates: Combining these food groups in every meal of the day, including snacks, will ensure that you get a steady flow of energy as the body converts food relatively slowly to glucose. You can hence prevent triggering insulin production and, in turn, minimizing the potential of your body to store food as fat. Protein-rich foods are

lentils, legumes, milk (soya and regular), egg, meat, fish and tofu. Complex carbohydrates are un-milled brown rice, oats, whole wheat, jowar, ragi and bajra. Stay hydrated: It is important to drink plenty of water, at least 2.5 litres a day and even more in hot weather or if you are exercising. Remember, your body is 80 per cent water and by the time your body tells you that you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Limiting alcohol (also high in calories), tea and coffee is important, as these are dehydrating. Enjoy a varied diet: It is very easy to get into the habit of eating the same foods every day. Be experimental and make sure your foods are as colorful as your wardrobe. Try and introduce two new nutrient dense foods into your diet every week. This will ensure that you get a variety of nutrients each day. Enjoy your food: Eating has become a chore these days, mostly crammed in between “important” events, and we barely find time to really savor our food. Taking time out to eat is beneficial to our

Police Station, please contact the Police Inspector in Charge of that Police Station. You can also proceed up the hierarchy and contact the Sub Divisional Police Officer (Dy SP) or the District Superintendent of Police or the Deputy Inspector General of Police. Their telephone numbers are displayed at each and every Police Station. A Cognizable Offence includes murders, rape, kidnapping, abductions, robberies, Drug related crimes etc. In every case of a cognizable offence, the police are required to register it in the First Information Register (F. I. R.) and investigate the offence. In its investigation, the Police are empowered to arrest a person without a warrant. Cognizable Offences are again categorized into Bailable and Non-Bailable offences. In a Bailable offence, the accused is normally entitled to bail, provided sureties and or the bail amount document is made available to the authorities concerned. In a Non-Bailable offence, it is only the court which is empowered to grant bail to the accused. Any arrested person shall be produced by the Police before the nearest Magistrate within 24 hours of the arrest. The complainant/accused person is entitled to avail legal advice during the process. If arrested, one is entitled to get information about the reasons of the arrest and the search of one's premises. This information is obtainable from the Investigating Officer. A Non-Cognizable offence includes include petty offences such as committing public nuisance, abusing, slapping, quarrels within the family or with neighbors, etc. In a case of a Non-Cognizable offence, police have no authority to either investigate the matter or to arrest the persons concerned without the prior permission of the local Magistrate.

digestive health (that is, we digest better and in turn absorb more nutrients) and far more satisfying. Avoid sugar: Excessive consumption of foods high in simple sugars (table sugar, fruit juice, fizzy drink, cakes, confectionery) disrupts the body’s blood sugar balance, leading to fat production and weight gain. These foods are high in calories too, forcing you to burn more to weigh less. Eat the good fats: Not all fats are bad. The body needs the good fats (also known as essential fats) such as Omega 3 (oily fish - sardines, raavas, Bangda) and Omega 6 (linseeds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds) to function properly. The key is to limit intake of saturated fats (red meat, dairy, confectionery, butter). Eat little and often: Graze and not gorge! Eating a balanced meal (complex carbohydrates 50 per cent, good fats 25 per cent, protein 25 per cent) with healthy snacking (nuts, seeds, fruits) gives you a constant supply of energy throughout the day, making hunger, tiredness and food craving a thing of the past. Follow the 80:20 rule: It is very natural to stray from these principles, but as long as you are eating healthily 80 per cent of the time, you can indulge the rest of the 20 per cent. This means that you can enjoy all the social occasions without feeling guilty and also escape the boredom associated with “Diet” regimes. Last but not least - Exercise: Losing and maintaining weight does not involve just changing your attitude towards food. Exercise and eating healthy go hand in hand. Your daily energy output must balance your calorie intake. Therefore, no matter how busy you are plan 30 minutes of exercise (brisk walking, swimming, jogging, cycling, aerobics) everyday!

Floyd Araujo – star badminton player Goa’s top shuttler Floyd Araujo makes his opponent sweat and toil with several long rallies. This 23 year old boy goes on to say “Badminton is a drug for me and I just can’t say no to badminton. I will go on playing this game till my bones become week. I wish to become a professional badminton player one day. Not forgetting to say my dad is the one who kindled in me the interest of playing badminton since he is also a badminton player and played for Goa at one point of time.” His current ranking in Goa is No.1 but at the national level his rankings will be known only after another 3 oies because he hardly plays the All India Tournament and only if one plays those tournaments continuously then only ones ranking increases. I had gone to for a tournament at Jammu Kashmir . He further went on to say I admire Lin Dan he plays well and is quick on the court as well as a very powerful smasher. Gopichand is also good has also brought laurels to our country. He also thinks the most difficult badminton skill to master is the Backhand smash and opines that Lin Dan smashes it well. According to this 23 year old boy the important thing to become a great badminton player is fitness and stamina. One also needs proper training from the coaches and also discipline on the court. When questioned how long he practices he replied “Now I have started working and hardly get to practice for around 3 hours in the

evenings”. “My achievements in the field of badminton so far are many I started winning when I was 10 I have won in the U- 10, U-13, U-16 and U-19 category, and now also in men’s (seniors category)” he says proudly. When inquired what he does to get rid of nerves before a match is was known he just concentrates on his match and believes in just being focused while playing. When interrogated which racket he uses and the string tension he use for his racket it was known that he uses a Yonex Arc saber 008 badminton racket. The name of the string is bg 65 and he uses 23 tension for his racket. When asked him how much of talent

and how much of practice does he think a sportsperson requires he said “Talent should be from within. And ones practice session should be for a duration of 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening.” Currently since he works in shifts and at present doing morning shift i.e. from 8:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. He gets up at 6:00 a.m has breakfast at 6:30 a.m and then leaves for work by 7:00 a.m. After he finishes with work after a long day he reach home in the evening at around 5:30 p.m.Later in the day he goes to play badminton from 6:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. and returns back home by 9:30 p.m. Has his dinner and is then off to grab some sleep by 10:30 p.m because a new hectic day awaits him. Araujo feels the future of badminton in 50 years from now can be good if there are better coaches, proper training and coaching facilities. Only then surely one can say that there will be players who will be playing for India very soon. - by Andrea (GT)

Ruins of

St. Augustine Tower

Facing the popular Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa stands ‘The Holy Hill’ or Monte Santo and the name is not by chance. It is adorned with a number of churches and chapels, but arguably what catches your eyes is the 46 meters high St. Augustine Tower that rises over you like a laterite giant. Although the standing tower is just a one fourth the fraction of the original one, its sheer enigma and size is what draws its visitors from all over. The Augustinian friars set foot at this site in the late 16th century and established a small humble convent and their religious order here. It was soon enlarged into one of the largest buildings in the former capital of Portuguese Goa, simultaneously raising a church of an equally grand proportion. The convent was made up of three storeys and was

complete with two cloisters, pillars, corridors, galleries, halls with numerous rooms, a library and the excellent paintings which adorned its walls – which made this edifice a finest of its kind, of its time. Subsequently stood one of the largest church edifices then in the whole of the Iberian world, of which St. Augustine’s Tower was a part of. Very

rarely it’s mentioned that the whole monument was dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Graça or Our Lady of Grace. The façade of the church was divided into four storeys facing the east. It was made up of five bays, square towers, arched openings with pediments, and the classical sequence of arch-rectangleoculus-niche in the central bay. The

Church of Santana in Talaulim (which interestingly would have also gone into ruins if not for the conservational work) is based on this model of the imposing facade for its equally massive front. It had eight richly adorned chapels and four altars. Legends have it that the architect (who was presumably Italian) was disappointed when its vault came down twice during its construction. He later rebuilt the vault the third time and to prove its stability ordered a heavy cannon to be fired near the building, choosing rather to lose his life and his only son by staying under the vault. The vault resisted the shock and did not cave in. Until two centuries later. It all started with the expulsion of the religious orders in 1835 by the Portuguese government and the friars were forced to abandon the majestic structure, which led to its ultimate decay. The vault collapsed in the early morning of 8th September 1842. On 8th August 1931, the façade came down at night and half of the tower on the 19th of August the same year with one third of it collapsing in 1938, leaving what we see today. Although the convent initially remained in a good state and was transferred to various institutions, burdensome expenses and maintenance ultimately led to its own abandon and dilapidation. Preservation works are recently carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India and various stone ruins have been placed in the courtyard. An interesting finding of a burial chamber led to the development of the mystery regarding the martyred Georgian queen, St. Catevan, whose mortal remains are supposedly buried around the complex. Kilometers away, Goa’s largest bell - weighing as much as 1800 pounds, which is housed in the belfry of Panjim’s Church of Immaculate Conception tolls away, bearing a silent testimonial to the history of a bygone monument to the thousands of passersby. It originally belonged to the St. Augustine Tower. - by Andrea (GT)

In Socorro (Serula), 11% of the popula.tion is under 6 years of age Socorro here refers to the village in Bardez, Goa, with a population of around 40,000 people, nestled in serene, picturesque surroundings and not the town in New Mexico, U.S.A. If you try to Google this place, it is very difficult to get an accurate location, even on a map acquired from an advanced satellite. But, what you will definitely notice is that, it forms a structure of green foliage on the map. Not a dot, but acres of stretched land, sandwiched somewhere in between .Porvorim and Mapusa Located 5kms away from Mapusa city and 3kms away from the Porvorim highway; the name of the village - “Socorro” is derived from it’s patron, Our Lady of Socorro, which means “HELP”. The church is fondly known as Nossa Senhora do Socorro. Some people are still unaware of nature’s this miracle, and in one way, it is safe, because, being unexplored yet, this wilderness is away from all the hazardous contamination, that the rest .of the state is currently facing With a countryside air, adding to it’s charm, this village is fractioned into seven different vaddos, each geographically apart and yet inter-linked via the modern technology of transportation – roadways. The sevenvaddos are as follows: Zoiswaddo, Vaddem, Maina, Ambirna, Porvorim, Arradi, Carrem. Succor also comprises of places like, Brittona, Penha-da-Franca, Paitona, Salvador-do-Mundo, Pomburpa, half of .Torda and Betim

The place has everything a nature lover is looking for - lush green fields on either sides, a plato with a small chapel, a beautiful creek which flows into the Mandovi river, and an enchanting route surrounded with heaps of trees… Not to forget, as mentioned in our last issue, Socorro also houses the adventure of wall climbing, in the yard of Mr. .Hakkim Sabir, fondly known as Kim Sabir And besides, it also has basic facilities, like a Health Care centre, the renowned Pinto Do Rosario’s maternity hospital, educational institutions, like the Holy Family school, a bank, village panchayats, etcInitially a part and parcel of a bigger village called Serula, it was unfortunately re-christened as Socorro, during the reign of the Portuguese. Similarly, the current Salvador-do-Mundo was originally known as Saloi. The parish of Socorro is the Third Rectory erected by the Franciscans. The Church was erected in 1668; rebuilt and enlarged in 1763. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Socorro, the feast in whose honor is celebrated on the 21st of November, every year. The religious fronts also include temples of Lord Maru-

ti and Lord Vetal, where numerous festivities like palki, diwzaan, mirovni, zatra, naatkaa, and many more take place, every year, on .the birth anniversary of the lords The eye-candy of Socorro, officially a village, Porvorim is called as the legislative capital of the state of Goa. It provides facilities no short of that of a town or a small city. Tourist folks usually visit this peaceful paradise to enjoy some leisure. From the Dominos Pizza to the Goa Board of Education, from The Goa Cricket Association to the famous Angels Resort, Porvorim is now considered a posh residential hub as it lies on the prime Mumbai-Goa highway of NH-17. Real estate agents have always had an eye on this blissful mini-heaven. There have been tremendous efforts to promote urbanization in this village, in order to enhance the economy. But what about the pollution and destruction that this initiative will cause this angelic and pure village? Its breath-taking beauty and the very fact that it is so far pollution free, is what .makes it a place to visit - by Andrea (GT)

The Earth Girl

Tarika Kiran

Tarika Kiran an 18-year old girl lives in Saligao with her 16-year old brother and parents, all involved in various social and environmental issues. Aged 86 and 92, her grandparents complete their family of six. Tarika was educated in a village school till the Vth Standard and later was given private tutorials. Like we initially were, most people may be unaware of the concept of

home schooling. But from Tarika’s experience we learnt that one can be educated much more at home than in school. From her parents, friends and many others, Tarika has developed various skills. She grew up doing very different and interesting things which she would never have experienced, if she was in a formal school. Currently, Tarika is completing her XII Standard

At a snake rescuer friend's home, Tarika handled her first snake when she was just 8 years old. After that, she was always comfortable with them, as snakes were regularly sighted around her home. Most people are scared of snakes and do not rest till the poor creatures are removed or killed. When Tarika was a child, there were few volunteers to rescue snakes. This is what led Tarika to experiment with rescuing them from places where people did not want them. It was her keen interest that compelled her to learn snake handling techniques through Green Cross, a Mapusa based NGO. For the last six years now, Tarika has been involved in rescuing snakes in collaboration with the Forest Department. She surely comes across as a very courageous, adventurous and daring girl - a role model for other girls her age in Goa. Known as the Snake Rescuer, Tarika along with her family, rescues snakes in Saligao and the neighboring villages. They do this with a passion for wild life conservation and not for money. The family rescues snakes which would otherwise be killed by people whose fear is greater than their compassion for snakes. As wildlife conservationists, this family is surely God-sent, not only to the

WILDLIFE So much variety, urban, rural and forest, Goa has more than 50 species of animals. Unfortunately most of them are in the deep forest. You find leopards, monkeys, deer, leopard cat, Indian civet, the gaur or Indian bison, the sloth bear, the Indian porcupine, the pangolin, the slender loris, the wild boar and the mongoose. Monkeys are found all across Goa . The most common species is the pink-bottomed macaque followed by the Hanuman langur. Goa has four species of bats, the fruit bat, the Dormers bat, the horse-shoe bat, and the Malay fox vampire. Flying foxes are also present in large numbers. Most of these are found in the rural interior areas. The Indian giant squirrel, the smaller three-striped squirrel and the five-striped palm squirrel are also found in most areas. There are four species of deer: the cheetal or spotted axis deer, the sambar, the barking

deer and the mouse deer. The smaller deer are preyed on by predators: the striped hyena, the jackal, and the wild dog. Long-beaked dolphins are often seen in the shallow waters of Goa 's more isolated beaches. Reptiles & Amphibians

village of Saligao, but to all of Goa. Tarika’s interests are not confined only to rescuing snakes. She has several other interests and is involved in many other activities. She has committed herself to helping children with Autism. Presently she volunteers her whole morning, at the Pre-Primary Chubby Cheeks School, in Porvorim dedicated to the care of children with Autism. Tarika also spends her evenings helping a little boy who is autistic and does this with a deep sense of commitment. As a career, she hopes to work with autistic children. Tarika is also involved in environmental issues. Along with her brother Suhail, she has organised the Earth Hour in Saligao, for the last three years. She has also teamed up to produce other environmental programmes. Recently, her drive for adventure led her to participate in the 600 km, All Women Cycling Expedition from Kullu-Manali to Khardungla, the world’s highest motorable road. One of 103 participants that started out, Tarika was among the 86 that successfully completed the hazardous expedition. She was just 17 when she undertook that challenge. With this feat, Tarika and the other 85 adventurous women cyclists broke into the Limca Book of Records. The expedition was organized by Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI). Tarika sets a wonderful example for girls in Goa through her multifaceted talent, her spirit of adventure, her sense of compassion for the vulnerable and her resilience in facing challenges. She is awe inspiring! - by Andrea (GT)
