Tour 2016
Welcome to Tour 2016 This year I have great pleasure in introducing Glyndebourne’s first ever production of Madama Butterfly, which premieres in Tour 2016. Puccini’s popular opera is based on the true story of a Japanese geisha abandoned by her American sailor husband, and on stage becomes a heart-wrenching cultural clash between East and West. I have no doubt that you will enjoy it. South Korean soprano Karah Son makes her debut with us as Cio-Cio-San and this new production is directed by Annilese Miskimmon and conducted by John Wilson and Gareth Hancock.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni makes a welcome return in 2016. Jonathan Kent’s production was last seen on the Tour in 2010, this revival is conducted by Pablo González and Ben Gernon and directed by Lloyd Wood. It will also be used as the backdrop for a new presentation created exclusively for Tour 2016 entitled Don Giovanni: Behind the Curtain. Presented by Paul Rissmann, the man behind the critically acclaimed series of music discovery concerts called Naked Classics, it will provide the perfect introduction to this special art form. His versatile experience as well as his adaptable and engaging approachwill ensure the evening is entertaining and insightful for anyone who is curious to find out more about opera – from those that are completely new to Glyndebourne to our regular attenders. The Glyndebourne Tour would not be possible without the support of Arts Council England, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support of our work. Special thanks too goes to the Daily Mail as 2016 marks the fifth year of their sponsorship of the Tour and without their continued funding we would not be able to present our ambitious programme of work. I hope you enjoy Tour 2016 – welcome if you are attending for the very first time and many thanks if you are a regular supporter. Gus Christie, Executive Chairman

Giacomo Puccini
A new production for Tour 2016 Sung in Italian with English supertitles
Derived from the true story of a Japanese geisha married and abandoned by an American sailor, Puccini’s popular masterwork unfolds as a disastrous clash of East and West. In Glyndebourne’s first-ever production of Madama Butterfly, director Annilese Miskimmon delves deep into the humanity of the ill-fated Cio-Cio-San and the American naval officer who marries her after both fall prey to false and dangerous stereotypes of one another’s cultures. Puccini’s use of authentic Japanese scales and folk melodies gives the music an irresistibly exotic flavour. Yet Madama Butterfly is Italian opera at its melodious and moving best, featuring such beloved numbers as the wellknown ‘Flower Duet’, ‘Humming Chorus’, and the heart-rending aria ‘Un bel dì, vedremo’. The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes including one 20 minute interval. The 2016 Glyndebourne Tour production of Madama Butterfly is generously supported by Glyndebourne Association America Inc.

Don Giovanni
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
A revival of the Festival 2010 production Sung in Italian with English supertitles
The name ‘Don Juan’ has become a synonym for ‘womaniser’ the world over, through the legendary 14th-century nobleman’s endless incarnations on stage and in film, literature and visual art. But in Mozart’s Don Giovanni we meet the Don on a very unusual day: a day of foiled sexual conquests, a day of murder, his last day on earth. Not many comic operas begin with a coldblooded murder and end with the hero’s consignment to hell – but Don Giovanni swings restlessly between comedy and tragedy to startling effect. Mozart’s irresistible music follows suit, its famous highlights ranging from Don Giovanni’s sparkling Champagne aria to the seductive duet ‘Là ci darem la mano’. Jonathan Kent’s sleek and suspenseful production, last seen on the Tour in 2010, captures this duality brilliantly. Following his success as Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia (Tour 2013) baritone Duncan Rock returns to the Tour to sing Don Giovanni. He is accompanied by tenor Anthony Gregory (The Turn of the Screw, Tour 2014) who sings Don Ottavio opposite soprano Ana Maria Labin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Tour 2015) as Donna Anna. Polish soprano Magdalena Molendowska (La traviata, Tour 2014), sings Donna Elvira. glyndebourne.com

Behind the Curtain The essence of opera revealed
‘It was an absolutely cracking night, with perceived barriers tumbling all around, and the highest and meatiest of high art being blessed with a common touch and available to Everyman. It was a huge public success.’ The Herald (review of Paul Rissmann’s Naked Classics)

Extend your Tour 2016 experience by enjoying Glyndebourne on screen as well as on stage this autumn. Following the huge success of Saul in 2015 we are screening this highlyacclaimed production in selected cinemas to meet popular demand. With a musical score of heart-breaking beauty and intensity, Saul takes us into a nightmare world of madness and despair. This powerful and highly acclaimed production, filmed live in Festival 2015, delves deep into Handel’s grand setting of the well-known Biblical tale of the first King of Israel’s love and loathing for his eventual successor, David. We watch Saul crumble before our eyes, as dramatically as Shakespeare’s King Lear, as he watches David win everyone’s heart – including that of his son, Jonathan. Conductor.........................................................Ivor Bolton Director..........................................................Barrie Kosky With Christopher Purves (Saul), Iestyn Davies (David), Sophie Bevan (Michal), Lucy Crowe (Merab), Paul Appleby (Jonathan) and the Glyndebourne Chorus.
