No Ordinary Opera

FESTIVAL 2020 21 May – 30 August

02 | FESTIVAL 2020

James Bellorini

Welcome to Festival 2020

W

2020 brings a Festival of contrasts – hilarious, tragic, political, mythic – great works of art separated by over two centuries, but all able to speak directly to us across the years, and to stir our contemporary imaginations. If you come several times to see different operas, you will also experience the gardens changing – lovingly tended by our green-fingered experts: our ‘seventh’ production, a very organic opera!

James Bellorini

e live in an accelerating world. Rushed everything – bleeping emails, snacks on the run, constant news updates… A day at Glyndebourne offers the antidote: a few hours at a slower pace, with time for the beauty of the gardens, good food, and at the heart of it all, inspiring, world class opera. And breathe.

Stephen Langridge

Artistic Director Glyndebourne's bucolic setting is classically English, and opera is an outwardlooking, pan-European art form. We see no conflict there, and we are proud to present performers from all over the world who bring their diverse sensibilities and voices to works by Russian, American, English, German, Austrian, French and Italian artists, in operas which explore big, universal themes – power, faith, freedom, courage – and, above all, celebrate the human capacity for love.

We are enormously grateful to our Members for their engagement and support, and look forward to welcoming you, whether you are a seasoned regular or if it is your first operatic experience. Welcome to the opera oasis. Welcome to Glyndebourne.

Festival 2020 at a glance Dialogues des Carmélites

L’elisir d’amore

Alcina

Glyndebourne’s first ever staging of an extraordinary 20th-century tragedy.

Warmth and sparkling laughter highlight Donizetti’s greatest romantic comedy.

Seductive sorceress Alcina can conjure anything she wants – anything, except love.

Nemorino loves Adina, but she’s dazzled by the dashing soldier Belcore. Can he find the courage to confess his feelings? With the help of an eccentric doctor and a mysterious love potion he just might.

A beautiful island and its even lovelier queen have beguiled the knight Ruggiero. But is all really as it seems? Spectacle and sensation collide in a sumptuous new staging of Handel’s magical fable.

Fidelio

The Rake’s Progress

Beethoven’s only opera is a powerful musical manifesto for liberty and justice.

David Hockney’s iconic designs return to Glyndebourne for the first time in a decade.

When society and civilisation fall apart, one young woman must find the courage to follow her heart – wherever it may lead. Painfully, rapturously beautiful, Poulenc’s opera is musical storytelling at its most viscerally powerful.

See pages 8-9

Die Entführung aus dem Serail Mozart’s East-meets-West comedy makes its first Festival return. Kidnapped and imprisoned in a Turkish harem, Konstanze must find a way to escape and return to her beloved Belmonte. Exotic musical colours and exuberant energy make Mozart’s youthful opera one of the composer’s most instantly appealing.

See pages 10-11

When her husband is unjustly imprisoned and sentenced to death, Leonore must risk all to rescue him. Fidelio celebrates the power of love, courage and fidelity in music of heartsoaring beauty.

See pages 16-17

See pages 12-13

A bearded lady, a small-town boy and a deal with the devil: classic fairy tale meets modern morality play in Stravinsky and WH Auden’s exhilarating fusion of high drama and low comedy.

A visit to Glyndebourne’s Festival is about more than just the opera… Here’s a taste of what you can expect.

Your day at Escape to the country Glyndebourne is nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside, in the South Downs National Park, happily an hour away from the distractions of London and 20 minutes from Brighton. We’ll even collect you by coach from our local mainline train station, Lewes (see page 27 for details). Dress for the occasion We encourage formal evening dress in keeping with the wishes of Glyndebourne’s founder, John Christie. Fashions have changed since 1934, but our audiences today still enjoy the thrill of dressing up. Enjoy the glorious gardens Take time to explore the gardens that surround our state-of-the-art, 1,200-seat, indoor opera house. The grounds open two hours before every performance, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the gardens, the visual art around the theatre and visit the Glyndebourne Shop. Visual Arts You’ll find art inspired by Glyndebourne in Gallery 94 and in the gardens, around the theme of Forces of Nature. In the Foyer Circle you'll find work by our 2020 Associate Artist, Tom Hammick.

Picnics and dining Our 90-minute dining interval during every performance is as much of a tradition as our opera. Enjoy a leisurely picnic – you can bring your own or order one and collect it when you arrive. You are welcome to picnic in any part of the Glyndebourne gardens, and your picnic can be set up pre-performance and left out for the duration of your visit. Alternatively, a limited number of picnic tables are available on the Upper Circle Level balcony and beside the River Cottage Deli. In addition, for a fee, places can be booked in the Greenhouse Marquee and in our new Garden Marquee via the Box Office. Prefer the great indoors? Leith’s at Glyndebourne run our three on-site restaurants, where your dining experience can range from a relaxed afternoon tea to sumptuous fine dining. If you would like to book a picnic or make a restaurant reservation, please visit diningatglyndebourne.com

Opening night The Festival is one big summer party – or like a wedding, as an audience member recently described it – and we’re starting it in style. Join us on opening night, Thursday 21 May, for a few extra fanfares to mark the beginning of the season, starting with drinks on the lawn and ending with the bang of festive fireworks. 04 | FESTIVAL 2020

FRANCIS POULENC

I

s martyrdom noble or arrogant, a worthy sacrifice or a wasteful one?

As the Revolution reaches its bloody height, Blanche de la Force turns her back on the world, searching for peace and purpose in the convent. But life as a Carmélite has its own horrors. Faced with an agonising choice, Blanche must let go of her fears and finally find the courage to live – or die. One of the most devastatingly powerful operas in the repertoire, Dialogues des Carmélites is also one of the most beautiful. Steeped in Debussy, Monteverdi and Verdi, Poulenc’s lyrical score balances cinematic drama and scope, charged with the violence of revolution, with moments of startling simplicity and beauty. The composer may have asked rueful forgiveness for his nuns and their old-fashioned music, but this modern masterpiece needs no apology. After a triumphant Saul, Barrie Kosky returns to direct Glyndebourne’s first ever production of Dialogues des Carmélites. Robin Ticciati conducts a superb ensemble cast.

S

ophisticated and wealthy, Adina is the toast of her small Italian town. Country boy Nemorino loves her, but she only has eyes for Belcore, the smooth-talking sergeant who has swept her off her feet. So when a travelling doctor arrives in town Nemorino pins all his hopes on a magical love potion. But nothing in this topsy-turvy comedy is ever quite as it seems… Light, lyrical and bursting with energy, L’elisir d’amore was the biggest success of Donizetti’s career – a comedy with the softest of hearts and the sweetest of melodies, including Nemorino’s much-loved aria ‘Una furtiva lagrima’. Updating the action to the 1940s, Annabel Arden’s production celebrates the opera’s original joyful, colourful spirit, painting a vivid picture of an Italy on the brink of political change. Directed by Annabel Arden with Enrique Mazzola conducting two exciting young casts.

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL

A

lcina rules over an enchanted island – its trees, rocks and animals are all the bewitched forms of her discarded lovers. But Ruggiero is different. Alcina has really fallen for the handsome knight. Can love perform the ultimate enchantment and transform Alcina herself? Or, faced with her lover’s desertion, will she once again choose vengeance and violence?

A new production for Festival 2020 Sung in Italian with English supertitles

A son searching for his father; a woman searching for her fiancé; a sorceress searching for truth: Handel’s last and greatest ‘magic’ opera is an exuberant fantasy full of illusion and wizardry. It’s also a probing psychological portrait of love in all its forms. In Alcina herself, Handel creates one of the most complex and compelling heroines of his career – at once witch and woman, villain and victim.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART

A

bducted by pirates, Konstanze and her maid Blonde have been sold into Pasha Selim’s harem. With the help of their lovers the two women plot their escape. But when their plans are betrayed and punishment looms, help comes from an unlikely quarter. Mozart’s first opera for Vienna is an ambitious musical calling-card, designed to establish its young composer at the heart of this sophisticated society. Exotic orchestral textures give the score its distinctive colour and vitality. Add to this many of the most demanding and dazzlingly virtuosic arias Mozart ever wrote, and you have a work of buoyant, irrepressible charm, whose lively twists and turns resolve in an unexpectedly thought-provoking conclusion. Vicki Mortimer’s evocative designs conjure an 18th-century Eastern fantasy of sun-filled gardens and cool, shady terraces – a world of hedonism, delight and unfettered desire. Directed by David McVicar and conducted by rising star Nicholas Carter.

alsely imprisoned by the despotic Don Pizarro, Florestan faces a slow and inevitable death. Determined to save him, his wife Leonore devises a daring plan – one that puts not only Florestan but herself in gravest danger. Truth and goodness confront corruption and cruelty in an opera that reveals both the heights and the ugly depths of human nature.

A new production for Festival 2020 Sung in German with English supertitles

Fidelio, with its stirring Prisoners’ Chorus, is a musical shout of fury and an impassioned cry of hope – still as powerful a political statement as it was during the French occupation of Beethoven’s Austria. It’s also a love story, celebrating not the thrill of first love, but the enduring, quiet devotion of marriage in music of transcendent beauty.

But London’s glittering promise soon corrodes; love, money and even sanity slip further and further from Tom’s grasp. Can true love save him, or will the Devil have the last laugh? Hogarth’s paintings charting one man’s path from pleasure to ruin are the starting point for one of the most dazzlingly original works of the 20th century, like a Mozart opera that has wandered into a musical hall of mirrors – at once elegant and anarchic. Comedy and tragedy are never far apart in this light-footed work that can break your heart with the broadest of smiles. One of the great Glyndebourne classics, John Cox’s production returns for the first time in a decade, bringing David Hockney’s muchloved designs to a new generation. 30 | FESTIVAL 2020

We provide a free round-trip coach service from Lewes train station to Glyndebourne when you arrive on the recommended train detailed in this Performance Schedule, and there will be an additional coach service one hour later. This service is not pre-bookable and it is complimentary if used to and from Glyndebourne; a ticket is issued for your return journey. We run post-opera coaches back to Lewes train station after every performance. The last post-opera coach leaves approximately 30 minutes after a performance ends. Bus and train times are recommendations only. Glyndebourne cannot guarantee the published times as they may be subject to change. We recommend that you check with National Rail Enquiries on 03457 48 49 50 or nationalrail.co.uk before embarking on your journey. Note: Broadcast cameras will be present at certain performances. The design of the auditorium specifically allows for camera positions to cause only minimal disruption to members of the audience. Photography and filming may take place throughout the Festival; notices alerting you to this will be displayed on the screens in the Long Bar.
