Glyndebourne, Canterbury, Norwich, Woking, Milton Keynes glyndebourne.com

When my father launched the Tour back in 1968 his ambition was to present our brand of opera across the country to give more people the chance to see it, and at the same time provide a platform for younger, less experienced singers to showcase their talents. I am proud to say that 50 years on we continue to do this. We will be celebrating the past 50 years of the Tour with a fundraising gala concert in London on 4 December, and by hosting a Christmas Concert at Glyndebourne on 8 and 9 December. This year we will also be presenting the Glyndebourne premiere of Cendrillon, a classic retelling of the Cinderella story; our sparkling audience favourite La traviata; and we will once again go behind the scenes to reveal how opera is staged in La traviata: Behind the Curtain. I hope you can join us. Gus Christie EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN

Thank you A special thank you to all our Tour Members, donors and audiences for keeping our extraordinary operas on the road for the past 50 years. Tour 2018

I ATA ‘ Glyndebourne’s impeccable Traviata is a palpable hit’ The Observer

V ER DI Revival of the Festival 2014 production Sung in Italian with English supertitles

A tale of two young lovers separated by the cruelty of society and fate, La traviata is one of opera’s most powerful and enduring romances. When Alfredo, an innocent young man from the country, meets charismatic Parisian courtesan Violetta, he falls deeply and immediately in love. But can Violetta ever escape her dark past and find a new beginning with him? And will his family ever consent to their relationship? The only Verdi opera set in the composer’s own day, La traviata still feels startlingly contemporary – a truthful, unblinking exploration of love and desire and the many contradictions and complications of human emotion. Tom Cairns’s timeless production combines sumptuous visuals with heart-breaking dramatic realism to create a true contemporary classic. Set to some of opera’s most memorable tunes, from rousing drinking songs to passionate love-duets, Verdi’s score amplifies a familiar story, transforming it into something profoundly moving, whether you’re seeing it for the first or the fiftieth time. LON

MASSENET A new production for Tour 2018 Sung in French with English supertitles

Sweet-natured Cendrillon lives the life of a servant at the home of her downtrodden father and cruel stepmother, teased and tormented by her two foolish stepsisters. Will she make it to the ball to meet the handsome Prince? With a little help from her fairy-godmother she just might. A glittering comic opera celebrating the power of fantasy, Cendrillon is Jules Massenet’s musical fairytale. An enchanting retelling of the familiar Cinderella story, it balances the exquisite beauty of its romantic and fantasy scenes with deft, witty portraits of Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters. The most successful French opera composer of the turn of the 20th century, Massenet’s blend of colourful characters, generous melodies and sumptuous orchestral textures is both heady and bewitching. Fiona Shaw, whose The Rape of Lucretia for Glyndebourne (2013) was a hit, praised by both critics and audiences, directs a new production created especially for the Glyndebourne Tour. CINEMA

Richard Strauss

Der Rosenkavalier Richard Jones’s 2014 production of Der Rosenkavalier will be screened in selected cinemas during Tour 2018. Featuring Kate Royal (The Marschallin), Tara Erraught (Octavian), Teodora Gheorghiu (Sophie) and Lars Woldt (Baron Ochs) with sets by Paul Steinberg and costumes by Nicky Gillibrand. Conducted by Robin Ticciati. The Marschallin adores her lover Octavian. But, at nearly 20 years his senior, she knows that their affair cannot last. So when Octavian meets the beautiful Sophie, she must find a way to let him go. Can she keep Sophie from the clutches of her boorish cousin, the libidinous

Baron Ochs, and ensure that young love is triumphant? One of opera’s great romantic comedies, Der Rosenkavalier is a musical fantasy that tempers sweetness with satirical wit, farce with philosophy, humour with pathos. Brimming with youthful energy and passion, carried along on the lilting rhythms of the waltz, the voluptuous score paints a gilded vision of a fairytale Vienna. Romance is woven through every bar of a lyrical masterpiece that celebrates a world on the brink of change. For full screening information please visit glyndebourne.com glyndebourne.com
