Performances for Schools at Glyndebourne 14 & 16 October

Two performances, one world-class offer We believe that opera can transform lives. That’s why, since 2006, we’ve welcomed over 20,000 students to Glyndebourne for one of our dedicated Performances for Schools. Often their first taste of opera, it’s an experience like no other: Glyndebourne’s world-famous auditorium filled entirely with students, a special introduction on stage and then all the emotion, spectacle and quality of a Glyndebourne opera, full-length and fully staged. OPERA IS FOR EVERYONE Opera is the only art form that has it all: music, movement, drama and design. It’s full of immense technical skill, crafted with precision and passion. Brilliant as a source of inspiration and learning for those studying performing arts, design and technology, the themes of the operas and experience of going to the theatre can also be the starting point for projects reaching across the curriculum. Thursday 16 October, 2.00pm La finta giardiniera LESSONS THAT LAST MORE THAN A DAY We hope your Performance for Schools experience lasts beyond your time at Glyndebourne and we are committed to helping you extend learning into the classroom, both before and after your visit. From the beginning of September, on our website you’ll find a number of resources and tailored information about the operas, created by our award-winning education team. Designed to help teachers prepare students for their visit to the theatre, they also include suggested activities to enhance their understanding. The experience at Glyndebourne itself has also been tailored with students in mind: the on-stage introduction prepares the audience for what to expect and things to look out for in the production. It is complemented by our specially commissioned Performance for Schools programme, free for each student to take home. PLAN YOUR VISIT Glyndebourne is in the heart of the Sussex countryside, 30 minutes outside Brighton. Take a look and find out more at glyndebourne.com. Schools are also welcome to enjoy the gardens during their visit.

ALL TICKETS £7

Nearer the time we’ll send you an email giving you all the practical information you need to make your visit run as smoothly as possible. TOUR 2014 | PER FOR MANC ES FOR SC HOOLS

Tuesday 14 October, 11.00am La traviata

One of the most popular operas of all time The story of La traviata (The Fallen One) can be told in 14 words; boy loves girl, boy’s father disapproves, boy and girl split, girl dies of TB. The point is, why does Dad disapprove? And the answer to that takes us straight into 19th century Paris and the heady world of the demi-monde. The demi-monde (the half world) was full of rich young men (like Alfredo the hero) and their mistresses (Violetta, the heroine). It looked glamorous but the trouble was the men were free, they could flirt with the women and return to respectable society, but the women were not. They were fallen, unrespectable,

trapped in the half world. No wonder Alfredo’s father (Germont) rushes up to town to stop his son’s affair. Verdi knew this world very well, his own mistress had had one lover too many and he suffered deeply from the Germonts of this world. Yet he wrote this opera, passionate and angry in places, but full of sympathy for Alfredo, Violetta and Germont. All three characters are in an impossible situation, made worse by Violetta’s terminal illness, and the result is a show that moves from young love to young death, taking in the great human emotions on the way – love, compassion, despair, and forgiveness.

A rarely-performed Mozart gem

WO LF G A NG A M A D EUS M O Z ART

La finta gia La finta giardiniera (The pretend gardener) is one of the oddest stories Mozart ever set to music. The heroine, Sandrina, is working as a gardener to escape from her lover, Count Belfiore, who stabbed her in a fit of jealous rage just before the opera began. Sandrina’s boss, the Mayor of Lagonero, fancies her but doesn’t reckon on his servant Serpetta, who is determined to marry him herself, while Sandrina’s servant Nardo (also disguised as a gardener) is in love with Serpetta. Into this tense situation stalks Arminda, the Mayor’s niece, anxious to get away from her lover Ramiro (whom she has jilted) while Ramiro arrives, convinced that Lagonero

is the ideal spot in which to recover from a broken heart. Add the sudden appearance of the hero, the completely unbalanced Count Belfiore, and you can see the opera is heading for melt down.

What does Mozart make of all this? Well, he was only 19 when he wrote the opera and, though he clearly enjoyed the sheer silliness of it, he responded to something else. There’s an undercurrent of violence and madness in the show, which appealed to the teenage Mozart – and will grab the interest of any teenage audience.

What teachers said about Performances for Schools... “ I consider the chance for our children to see world-class performances in a genre they might not have any previous knowledge of as fantastic… the sublime experience of visiting the opera is something the children remember for far longer than any music or drama lesson that I could deliver.”

“ Thank you very much. Another memorable and fantastic experience which we thoroughly enjoyed.” Thinking through logistics or the educational benefits? If you’re interested in Performances for Schools but would like to chat to other teachers who’ve been before, please let Glyndebourne’s education team know – we’ll help put you in touch with those who might be able to answer your questions.
