Also returning are three Glyndebourne favourites which travel from Robert Carsen’s swashbuckling Rinaldo, through the watery depths of Melly Still’s Rusalka and to the bright Spanish sunshine of Annabel Arden’s Il barbiere di Siviglia.

We are thrilled to be working with Barbe & Doucet for the first time on a new production of Die Zauberflöte. Renowned for their creative and spectacular productions, this will surely be a highlight of the season. As will the new work by old friends: Richard Jones returns to direct a new production of Berlioz’s ‘dramatic legend’ La damnation de Faust and Fiona Shaw brings her typically probing intelligence to Massenet’s Cendrillon. The Festival Escape to the country Glyndebourne is nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside, in the South Downs National Park, happily an hour away from the distractions of London and 20 minutes from Brighton. We’ll even collect you by coach from our local mainline station, Lewes (see page 20 for details). Dress for the occasion We encourage formal evening dress in keeping with the direction of Glyndebourne’s founder John Christie. Fashions and attitudes to dress have changed since 1934, but our audiences today still enjoy the thrill of dressing up. Make a day of it Glorious gardens surround our state-of-theart 1,200-seat opera house. The gardens open at least two hours before every performance, giving you plenty of time to explore, enjoy the visual art exhibited around the theatre and visit the Glyndebourne Shop. Picnics and dining Our 90-minute dining interval during every performance is as much of a tradition as our opera. Enjoy a leisurely picnic – you can bring your own or order one and collect it when you arrive. Prefer the great indoors? aust is on the brink of suicide when smoothtalking Méphistophélès appears, offering an alternative: he will give Faust all the pleasures of the world in return for just one thing – his immortal soul. When the scholar agrees it sets in motion a story that takes him from love to cruellest loss, delight to despair and ultimately from salvation to damnation. Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust is a musical thrill-ride – a dramatic tour-de-force that throws all of music’s capacity at one simple question: what is the price of the human soul? A vast orchestra and chorus conjure the composer’s fantastical visions in music that ranges from tender love-songs and ecstatic hymns to drinking songs and military marches, culminating in the relentless, propulsive violence of the ‘Ride to the Abyss’. Glyndebourne Music Director Robin Ticciati brings Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust, directed by Richard Jones, to Glyndebourne for the very first time, with a cast of Festival favourites.

he beautiful Rosina is kept all but prisoner by her guardian Dr Bartolo, who secretly hopes to marry his wealthy ward. But when Count Almaviva falls in love with Rosina from afar he enlists the help of cunning barber Figaro to help him outwit Bartolo. A comic battle of wills ensues, but will love or greed be triumphant? Verdi thought it the greatest operatic comedy – a perfect marriage of wit, energy and exhilarating musical invention. Rossini’s score fizzes with virtuosic brilliance, combining bravura solo arias, set to some of the composer’s best-loved melodies, with breathtaking, intricate ensembles, weaving together the story’s many strands into glittering musical and dramatic harmony. Embracing the opera’s commedia dell’arte origins, Annabel Arden’s production is suffused with Spanish colour and warmth. Conductor Rafael Payare makes his Glyndebourne debut.

weet-natured Cendrillon lives the life of a servant with her cruel stepmother, stepsisters and her downtrodden father Pandolfe. Transformed for just one night, she captures the Prince’s heart at the royal ball. Will she find a way to escape domestic drudgery and reclaim her beloved? With a little help from her Fairy Godmother, she just might. With its combination of enchanting love story and broad, burlesque comedy, Cendrillon is one of the great operatic fairy tales – a Cinderella that looks back to Charles Perrault’s original story in all its richness and ambiguity. Massenet’s sensuous, Belle Époque fairy tale is gilded with lavish orchestral textures and glittering vocal writing, drawing on everything from baroque dances to Wagner-inspired chromaticism to bring its story to colourful life, conjuring a world of infinite musical and emotional variety. Fiona Shaw’s production makes its Festival debut here conducted by John Wilson.

rince Tamino is on a quest: rescue the beautiful Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, who has been kidnapped by the high priest Sarastro. But is all really as it seems? With the help of bird-catcher Papageno, Tamino must brave not only dragons and the forces of darkness but trials of fire and water if he is to arrive at the truth and gain Pamina as his wife. Composed just months before his death, Mozart’s final stage work is a heady blend of knock-about comedy and contemplative beauty – a musical masterpiece that reimagines opera for the Age of Enlightenment. The sweetness and apparent simplicity of this enchanting score conceals a great deal of sophistication, weaving some of the composer’s most beautiful and best-loved melodies together in an elegant allegory whose wicked queens and noble princes are just the beginning of the story. hristian knight Rinaldo loves Almirena, but she has been kidnapped by the scheming sorceress Armida. A magical battle of wits and wills ensues between Rinaldo’s Crusaders and the Saracen army, as the fate not just of two lovers but two nations hangs in the balance. Carsen’s exuberant schoolroom staging is well on its way to becoming a Glyndebourne classic, bringing out all the energy and excess in Handel’s first opera for the London stage. The composer’s colourful, tune-filled score – bright with brass fanfares and memorable arias including ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ – is one of his finest, sweeping the audience from laughter to love and back again, in this exotic, East-meets-West musical fantasy. Rising young baroque specialist Maxim Emelyanychev conducts Robert Carsen’s production.

Backstage Tours Throughout the winter we offer 90-minute Backstage Tours that enable you to explore the theatre with a visit to the auditorium, back stage, dressing rooms, rehearsal spaces and the historic Organ Room where the very first performance at Glyndebourne took place. Members' Backstage Tours will take place in the spring. 2018 Tour 2018 October – December The brainchild of George Christie, the Tour was set up in 1968 to ensure that opera from Glyndebourne was accessible to audiences around the country, and just as importantly to nurture emerging talent. Glyndebourne Tour Christmas Concert Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December, 4.00pm The Glyndebourne Chorus, conducted by Nicholas Jenkins, invite you to join us for sizzling operatic highlights, followed by festive favourites and carols for all. 2019 Agreed 1–3 March A new opera commissioned for the Glyndebourne main stage about love, loss and divided lands. The opera is brought to life by a multi-genre score composed by Howard Moody and includes elements of classical, world and jazz music. The chorus of around 80 local auditioned singers are an active, shaping force of the drama. Their music is woven together and led by five professional singers and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. All tickets are £15. Screenings and broadcasts We will continue our programme of cinema and online broadcasts, showing these titles from the 2019 Festival: Cendrillon (Live) on Sunday 30 June Il barbiere di Siviglia (Recorded live in 2016) from Sunday 14 July Die Zauberflöte (Live) on Sunday 4 August Tour 2019 11 October – 7 December The 2019 Tour will feature Glyndebourne’s first ever production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Handel’s Rinaldo. In 2019 the opera house at Glyndebourne will be 25 years old. The wood in the house is reclaimed pine, which is over 125 years old. It was salvaged from dockyards and whiskey warehouses.

As Glyndebourne is three miles from the station we provide a free round-trip coach service. A coach will be waiting at Lewes station for audience members taking the recommended train or the next connecting service following a delay or cancellation. If you want to arrive later, another coach will leave one hour after the departure time of the first coach. This service is not pre-bookable. Alternatively, if you arrive by car there is a large free on-site car park for visitors. Electric cars You can recharge your electric car during a performance so please let Box Office know in advance if you would like to use this facility. Children Whilst most of our productions are suitable for children and young people, we recommend that you contact the Box Office for advice about the production before booking tickets for children in your party.

We provide a free round-trip coach service from Lewes station to Glyndebourne when you arrive on the recommended train detailed in this Performance Schedule, and there will be an additional coach service one hour later. This service is not pre-bookable and it is complimentary if used to and from Glyndebourne; a ticket is issued for your return journey. We run post-opera coaches back to Lewes train station after every performance. The last post-opera coach leaves approximately 30 minutes after a performance ends. Bus and train times are recommendations only. Glyndebourne cannot guarantee the published times as they may be subject to change. We recommend that you check with National Rail Enquiries on 03457 48 49 50 or nationalrail.co.uk before embarking on your journey. Note: Television cameras will be present at certain performances. The design of the auditorium specifically allows for camera positions to cause only minimal disruption to members of the audience.

For Festival 2019 we have three price bands, dependent on the day of the week and the repertoire. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 next to the name of the opera in the Performance Schedule (pages 24-27) indicate the price band for each performance; please refer to the table when booking your tickets. The colour coding in the seating plan below correlates directly with the colours on the table opposite on page 29.

Sightlines and Supertitles The Glyndebourne auditorium is a ‘horseshoe’ shape. As a result, some of our seats have a restricted view of varying degrees of the stage; and restricted or no view of the supertitles. Tickets for these seats are priced accordingly. However, if supertitles are important to your enjoyment of the performance, please tell the Box Office when applying for your tickets.
