Glyndebourne’s long association with the operas of Benjamin Britten dates back to 1946 when the company presented the world premiere of The Rape of Lucretia with Kathleen Ferrier in the title role. So there could surely be no more fitting way of marking the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth than by staging a new production of this powerful work for the 2013 Tour. I am delighted that the celebrated actress and director Fiona Shaw will be making her Glyndebourne debut with this staging and that one of this country’s most exciting young conductors, Nicholas Collon, will be in the pit. Another production created for the Tour, Annabel Arden’s L’elisir d’amore, makes a welcome return following its successful first outing six years ago and I have no doubt it will once again delight audiences with its colourful staging and touching story-telling. As a pre-Christmas treat, we are also bringing back Laurent Pelly’s highly imaginative retelling of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel – one of the great operatic works of the late 19th century. In 2013 there will be a change to our normal touring pattern as we return to Glyndebourne at the end of November for a week that has been curated to encourage new audiences for our work. As well as schools matinees, family performances and a special evening for our Under 30s members, we will be filling the week with other events that we hope will inspire those new to Glyndebourne to discover just how thrilling and accessible opera can be. I hope that you will support this week by encouraging friends and family to come along and see for themselves. This initiative is made possible through the generosity of contributions to our New Generation Programme which is dedicated to nurturing young talent and developing new audiences.

‘Listen very carefully. Never forget what is coming next. Real witches dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs.’ This advice on witches from Roald Dahl might well be borne in mind by Hansel and Gretel in Glyndebourne’s production of the muchloved opera by Engelbert Humperdinck. The music may be familiar, the fairy tale may be universally known, but the story is open to many different interpretations. Here, the two children are driven by hunger into the clutches of a terrifyingly vicious witch, who presides over an apparently free-for-all supermarket, shelves groaning with high-fat, high-sugar, highly coloured irresistible treats. 4 GLYNDEBOURNE.COM
Will they manage to outwit her, to escape her greedy malevolence? Humperdinck’s music has a deceptive sweetness and simplicity. Its immediately appealing folk tunes are given an additional voluptuous richness, the atmosphere of the forest is conjured up in a darkly dramatic and resonant soundworld. And through this comes the limpid purity of the evening prayer which the children sing when they are lost and afraid, asking the angels to protect them as they lie down to sleep. Let yourself be bewitched by the glorious music and the ghoulishly vivid imagination of director Laurent Pelly.

Nemorino loves Adina; Adina ignores him and falls for the swaggering soldier Belcore instead; Nemorino resorts to desperate measures and tries a fake love potion sold to him by the charlatan magician Dr Dulcamara; the effects are surprising; Nemorino decides that he must forget Adina and join the army; on the brink of losing him, Adina realises that she loves Nemorino after all. The twists and turns of this plot are dazzlingly delineated by Donizetti in music of delightful invention and at times, true poignancy. the yearningly romantic ‘Una furtiva lagrima’, when Nemorino is finally convinced that Adina loves him because he spots the glimmer of a tear in her eye. It has been a favourite with tenors and audiences ever since. Director Annabel Arden places the action within a rural Italian community and depicts in vivid detail the close-knit gossipy intimacy of village life – a life which is threatened by the testosterone-fuelled chaos which Belcore and his soldiers bring with them. The Rape of
B E NJA M IN B R I TTEN Given its first ever performance at Glyndebourne in 1946, Benjamin Britten created this opera with the poet Ronald Duncan, who wrote about their collaboration: ‘Britten and I worked at the same desk. We first discussed the shape of the whole drama and then spent several days working over this in order to reduce it to its essential simplicity. We kept our work fluid – even after it had gone to the printer and engraver, much to their dismay.’ The result of this close collaboration is an extraordinary and tightly focussed treatment of a legend which has acquired numerous layers in painting, poetry and drama. Lucretia is raped by the tyrant Tarquinius Superbus, ruler of Rome, and elects to kill herself rather than

live with the shame. The action of the opera is commented on throughout by a Male and Female Chorus who occupy another dimension, at times narrating the story and at times voicing the thoughts of the different characters. The central role of Lucretia is one which engages the talents of a singing actress to the utmost and one with which director Fiona Shaw will empathise keenly, drawing on her own experiences as both a performer and a director. It was in describing this work that Britten coined the term ‘chamber opera’, creating a work of distilled power and refinement with a cast of eight and an orchestra of 12 players and piano.

Getting to Glyndebourne BY TRAIN Travel by train and take advantage of our free coach service which runs between Lewes station and Glyndebourne before and after all Tour performances. The coach departs from the station one hour before the performance starts and returns approximately 15 minutes after its end. Lewes has excellent rail connections from London Victoria and across the South East, and all performances finish in time for you to return to London by train. To take advantage of the coach service, please book a ticket at glyndebourne.com at least 24 hours before the performance. Log in to your account and the option to book coach seats will be available for every performance for which you hold a ticket. If no reservation has been made, a charge of ÂŁ5 will be payable on boarding the coach.

PARKING AND ELECTRIC CARS Car parking is free. Please contact the Box Office and Customer Service team in advance if you have access needs and require a reserved parking space close to the auditorium.
