When Steve and Shelley Mace bought an 80-yearold five-bedroom home in Ventura two years ago, their friends were skeptical. “Everyone was like, ‘Are you serious?’” Shelley said. However, even though the 2,400-square foot house was in such bad shape that it had been on the market for five years, “We could see the potential in it,” Steve said. The house is located just a few blocks from Clear Lake, so they have views of the lake from the deck they built off the first floor as well as the master bedroom on the second floor, where they are building a second deck. “I can see all the way to Ventura Heights from our bedroom,” Shelley said. They also loved the open concept layout of the first floor. “I think it feels cozy,”

Shelley said. “It is all together rather than being separated.” The couple’s former home in Garner had a more traditional set-up, with a living room separated by walls from the kitchen. Shelley said they ended up not using the living room much because they were always hanging out in the kitchen. However, because the living room, dining room and kitchen in the new home are all basically one big room, someone can sit on the big sectional sofa in the living room area and chat with whoever is in the kitchen, according to Shelley. Although the Maces liked the overall feel of the main floor, the layout wasn’t exactly what they wanted. The floor and the ceiling also needed a lot of work. Fortunately, Steve is a Please see RENOVATES, Page 2

handyman. Although he makes his living repairing copiers and printers, he grew up on a farm where “if you needed something done, you just did it,” he said. Despite all the remodeling that needed to be done, the couple moved into the house as soon as they purchased it. The first thing they did was rip up the floors. “We lived on plywood,” Shelley said. Steve replaced the vinyl planking with ceramic tile with a wood pattern. “That was quite a challenge,” he said, noting he had never worked with that kind of tile before. Instead of the usual squares, the tile pieces were rectangular so they would resemble wooden planks. The couple decided to heat the floor so it would be comfortable to walk on in their bare feet in the winter. The kitchen cabinets were original to the house. Shelley thought they were attractive even though the color was “kind of boring.” She decided to keep them but paint them white and rearrange them. Steve used scrap wood from spare cupboards they found in the second-floor laundry room to create a kitchen island. He also built a dining room table out of wood a previous owner left in the attic above the garage. To jazz up a blank wall in the living room, Steve built a stone fireplace with an oak mantelpiece. They even converted a first-floor closet into a dog kennel with a half door for their puppy. Shelley runs her own inhome daycare center, so they turned the large outer foyer of their new home into a combination playroom and TV lounge. There’s a main floor bathroom off the inner foyer. Shelley said the daycare kids enjoy playing on the main floor deck for now, but she and Steve have plans to fence in the back yard once they have a couple of dead trees removed. Shelley and Steve’s bedroom is almost finished. They have turned another bedroom into a guest room. Steve is converting a third bedroom into his office. The other two bedrooms are being used for storage for now. The couple plans to turn one of them into a second guest bedroom. In addition to the bathroom in the master bedroom, there’s a second upper-floor bathroom. The Maces are a blended family with four children between them. The children are now grown and have moved out, but the couple say all the extra rooms and the three full bathrooms will come in handy when they visit. The home was originally built as a parsonage in the 1940s. The upstairs was enlarged the 1990s when a new pastor with a large family arrived. “There’s a lot of stories behind it,” Shelley said.

Flooring Grounds the Look

After a turbulent — to say the least — last year, many people are looking for peace and tranquility in their homes. A peaceful environment starts at the ground level: the floor.

They have a clean, uniform look that highlights the grain and natural beauty of the wood in a unique way. This kind of flooring is accented best by using longer boards, which also give the illusion of a bigger space.

still lay on area rugs for a plush, new feel. Pick rugs that complements your carpet and doesn’t compete with it. You can also repurpose old, quality Turkish or Persian rugs to add traction and textures to old stair cases.

These trends are a good place to start if you’re looking to get grounded in your home.

Natural Look

Loretta Willis, an Atlanta interior designer, tells Realtor.com that hardwood flooring brings the outside I, in a good way. Pale oak floors or dark walnuts are growing in popularity, the site says, especially when paired with dark cabinetry. (White cabinets? That’s last year.). Stain colors are going organic. “Our

research team is currently looking at acidic products like black tea and pomegranate juice to see how they can stain an oak floor using the tannins,” Page Nazarian told Realtor.com. “It’s amazing the depth that can be achieved this way versus traditional oil-based stains.”

Rift-Cut Floors

Rift-cut floors and milled perpendicular to the log’s growth rings, creating a straight, linear grain with no flecking.

Natural carpet include jute, sisal, wool or seagrass. This carpeting is an alternative to hardwood because it offers an organic look without the hard lines of wood flooring. Depending on the kind of carpeting you choose, you may also have cheaper initial and maintenance costs. Low-pile or woven carpets wears better than other carpets.

Layering and Repurposing

If you have carpet already, you can

There are lots of carpet patterns that are hot right now. For a minimal look, seek out carpets that have a subtle pattern to add texture and help a room feel finished. Plaids are great ways to make a structured statement and can help give you a grid for laying out your furniture, too. If you’re going big or going home, look for an animal print to make a statement in any space. Just keep the rest of your decor understated for maximum impact.

Advances in Window Coverings © ADOBE STOCK

Window coverings once came in white or neutral colors. Anything else was a custom style that was incredibly expensive.

T

oday’s window coverings come in a huge variety of colors and styles. That’s great news for your decor, but it can get pretty overwhelming. We’re here to help.

High-Tech Coverings

Yes, even our blinds are now smart. A variety of different rolling shades are now motorized and can even work with smart assistants like Alexa. You can also get motorized louvered blinds that control the tilt of the slats. These are great for high windows that you can’t reach without a ladder. These blinds can be combined with other smarthome tech, such as smart lighting, to set certain scenes at certain times of day. For instance, your blinds could close when the sun hits certain parts of your home to keep it cooler but still let in natural light at other times of day.

Natural Elements

Wicker and rattan, traditional blind materials, are coming back this year. You can also look for shade fabrics in natural fabrics like jute, sisal and bamboo. These organic materials add a warm, rich look to any room. Because these

materials are so light, if you’re using them in bedrooms or other areas, you may want to order room darkening liners to go behind them.

Fabrics

You can let your window coverings pack a punch by using vintage and retro fabrics on roller shades. Layer up these looks with curtains and drapes that accentuate your windows and provide a warm, textured look in your room. Keep your curtains simple and airy for more natural light. If you need a darker room, look for natural materials and monochromatic curtains in straight folds. Also look for environmentally responsible fabrics, like those made from recycled materials.

Palettes

Like in other areas, window coverings are trending in earthy, natural tones. Think cream, gray and rusty tones. These create warm, inviting looks. Statement windows are also back in style, serving as focal points in the room instead of a bland way to keep the world out. Other trends making a splash this year are shades of blue, natural prints and textures, and vintage florals.

Cold Weather and Your Roof

© ADOBE STOCK

Your roof keeps your home warm, snug and dry, but that can be harder in harsh winter months with colder temperatures, snow, ice and lots of rain.

Before the Weather Hits

Before the first cold day, if you are physically able, head up to the roof and check for damage from the summer. You’re looking for loose or missing shingles; sticks, moss or debris; or any obvious leaks. Reattach loose shingles, replace missing shingles and clear off any debris. Snow and ice can stick to the debris, ratcheting up the load on your roof. Clean the gutters and downspouts so that Here are some tips to keep your roof per- your roof can drain, then move inside to the forming at its best and your home warm and attic. Look for any damage or signs of water dry during the winter. intrusion. If you can’t get on the roof, hire a pro to take care of this for you before it gets

too frightful outside. You should also eyeball any existing flashing. Look for loose pieces and repair them as soon as you can. Improperly installed flashing can allow precipitation to get into your roof and cause leaks.

Once the Weather Turns Cold

Snowy roofs look beautiful, but that snow pack sitting on your roof can cause damage. Snow and ice add extra weight to your roof, exacerbating areas where it’s even slightly compromised. Snow and ice pack can also create ice dams, where melting snow can’t drain efficiently and backs up into your

home. Remove snow and ice as soon as you can to let the roof dry. It’s dangerous, though, so you may want to hire a maintenance company to handle this for you.

Check Attic Ventilation

Your attic plays a big part in your roof performance. Make sure your attic has enough ventilation — even in winter months — and check your insulation to keep the heat in and the cold out. You may want to close off some of your attic ventilation to keep too much cold air from entering your home. Just remember to open them again when the weather warms.

Work from Home Trends

Coronavirus has more people working from home than ever before, and it’s a trend that’s likely to stay long past the end of the pandemic.

Newsweek says most employees would rather continue working from home, and, for companies, working from home could afford them lower overhead costs. Not only is working from home changing the workplace, it’s also changing how we live. People are carving out office space from their homes and rearranging their living spaces to also accommodate work.

Space

You need to arrange a space with an actual monitor, keyboard and mouse so that you’re not hunching over a laptop, Architectural Digest says. Have a dedicated space of some sort, ideally with a door, and use a schedule that’s similar to your in-office work day. Even if you don’t have a door, you can create your own space like using a dedicated space and selected objects that tell your brain it’s time to go to work. Situate your work space near a window for natural light for maximum productivity and stimulation.

Color

What colors you see can change how you think, the magazine says. Blue helps creativity, green sparks imagination, and it doesn’t have to be paint. Bring in pops of color through plants or prints displayed in your space. And don’t forget the all important video-call background. Curate your space so that you’re easy to see and hear on those daily Zoom calls.

Whether traditional or contemporary styling, Bertch offers 50,000-plus color, wood and style combinations. Custom organization integrates interior accessories to add to the functionality of your investment.

Sound

Speaking of hearing, you don’t want your space to be too quiet or too loud. Architectural Digest says the audio sweet spot is around 70 decibels, or the sound of a vacuum cleaner. Try playing instrumental music in the background or turning on a TV for noise, but mind that it’s not too distracting.

Setting the Temperature We’re all familiar with the office that’s too hot or too cold, and of the various strategies people have to cope with that. The good news is that, by working from home, you have control of the thermostat. You want to set it to a comfortable level for you and your family. You also want to make sure you have good air quality. If your time at home has you realizing just how dusty your house is, maybe set an appointment for a thorough cleaning by professionals and invest in a home air filter for your work space.

Bad weather have you stuck indoors?

REDECORATE! KATHRYN WEBER

Tribune News Service‌

‌“On the next rainy day, I’ll...” We all say it. But when those showers actually arrive, we often forget our promises. If Mother Nature leaves you trapped indoors, use the time to some redecorating. During good weather, purchase needed supplies so you’ll be ready to beautify your home when the rain begins.

make the wall an instant focal point.

Make it mosaic

Tiling is one of the easiest DIY jobs around the house, and mosaic tile is ease to work with. Because the tiles are often as small as half an inch square, it’s easy to make them fit into a given spot. Typically attached to a webbed backing, they’re a cinch to put up and trim. Try tiling the backsplash in the kitchen, a wall in the bathroom, behind the sink in a powder room, or cover the top of a small side table. Use premixed adhesive and grout and you’ll be amazed at how much punch you can get in a small amount of time.

One of the fastest ways to perk up your decorating is by changing fixtures, including everything from chandeliers to plumbing fixtures. If you’re handy, you can easily switch out dated lighting fixtures. Changing plumbing fixtures goes fast, too, if you have the tools. Replacing old fixtures can really freshen up a bathroom, and possibly even save you money on water. Switch out your shower head for a low-flow option. If this is too complicated, other decorating changes that don’t require as much DIY experience include replacing cabinet pulls and door knobs. The unity will create drama and when the weather is ugly outdoors.

Smart Furniture

As with nearly every other industry, the furniture market takes advantage of innovative technology to enhance the traditional experience of relaxing on the couch. While comfort and price certainly matter when upgrading the living room, you should know about the smart features commonly found in today’s options. You can begin your search for smart models at your local furniture store. Check several outlets for the best price, service and options. If the advanced fixtures aren’t in stock, check with your salesperson about ordering a specific unit or setup. A significant advantage of buying from a specialty store is that they will often deliver the new inventory and remove your old items. When browsing in-store catalogs, look for these cutting-edge advancements for sectionals, recliners and fixtures.

USB Charging

Since we rely on electricity to charge our phones, laptops and even electronic books, it’s convenient to have built-in charging ports nearby. Many options come stocked with USB ports and storage buckets to keep all your de-

vices in the relaxation zone. One consideration you should make is that the furniture must be arranged near an outlet. If you need to install a new electrical source, it’s critical to hire a licensed electrician to complete the process.

Touch Light Nightstand

Have you ever woken up in the darkness only to stub your toe as you navigate to the bathroom? A touch light nightstand can be installed near your bed and offers AC outlets to plug in a standard lamp. It will connect to an easy-to-reach sensor strip or button to make engaging it effortless.

LIVE BETTER IN YOUR HOME Visit your local Marvin dealer to experience windows and doors differently.

Recliner Remotes

For those with aching bones or problems operating the sometimes-stiff handle of a recliner, a power assist remote is a problem solver. The switch seamlessly raises and lowers at the push of the button. High-end furniture may come with a massage option to further your comfort when lounging around.

Closing Up Open Floor Plans

© ADOBE STOCK

After a year at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, many people are realizing that their open concept floor plans — missing walls and doors, but great for parties and entertaining — aren’t so great for working and schooling from home. The experts at real estate website Zillow are predicting that new construction buyers will be in the mood for more walls and more privacy. In a 2020 survey by Zillow and The Harris Poll, 27% of people surveyed said they would consider moving to a home with more rooms, one of the top reasons for considering a move. This is a direct result of the pandemic, Zillow says, and of spending more time at home

because of the coronavirus. “Open floor plans are changing,” said home builder Berks Homes’ Vice President of Marketing Katie Detwiler. “People are feeling like they need more privacy, so we’ll see more doors — especially for home offices — more insulation for noise control, and separate spaces to keep the kids busy while parents work. More people will work from home in the future — period. There will need to be space and privacy to

accommodate that.” Berks is already adding separate spaces in its home designs, including mud rooms at the entrance from garages as a space to remove shoes, wash hands and get cleaned up before entering the main living area. There’s also, Zillow says, likely to be an increase in other separate spaces, like en-suite bathrooms in bedrooms, double master suites and other like features to reduce the spread of germs to the rest of

the house. While the real estate market is booming as people realize they don’t like their homes as much as they used to, Zillow says there’s a particular boom in new construction. Searches for new construction on the real estate app are up 73% from 2019, with shoppers citing the fact that the homes haven’t been lived in as an appealing feature. Smart home features that boost

The Ultimate Wood Heat.

cleanliness are also likely increasing in popularity. Zillow design expert Kerrie Kelly sees a rising popularity in touchless faucets, bidets and self-cleaning toilets. “Touchless faucets and bidets are only the beginning,” she said. “Just wait until the floor tile takes your temperature and the bathroom mirror checks your vitals. Exciting new products are on the horizon when it comes to keeping a clean, safe and healthy home.”

t’s true that you can never have too much storage. Homes with generous closet and drawer space are a dream. But what if your closet is shy on space? With some clever changes you can carve out more storage in your closets.

of the door The back of your closet door can hold a variety of items. Add an over the door hanger with multiple hooks, and you can hang robes, exercise wear, belts or hats. Look for specialty hangers specifically made for the back of your closet door.

Make the most of space by adding a dresser or drawer unit under hanging shirts. Look for easy to configure units that can be adapted to multiple sizes and shapes.

7 Reduce your pant space Jeans and pants eat up a lot of closet real estate because they’re bulky and they’re doubled up. Reclaim some of that space with specialty hangers for pants that let you hang four or five pairs of pants on one hanger.

more space out of your closet

8 Group clothing lengths

2 Ditch the plastic hangers It’s true; tubular plastic hangers do take up more space. Recycle those mismatched plastic hangers with velvet thin hangers in a single color. You can get 100 for about $40 online.

3 Add a shelf on lower rods

If you have a double rod closet, be sure to add a shelf over the lower rod. This is the perfect place to add thin jewelry boxes.

Get wired

Affix wire baskets to odd corners and small spaces to hold odds and ends. Wire shelves can be added above regular shelves to add more space, and they enable you to see what’s on the shelf at the top.

5 Install hooks on shelves Adding hooks on either side of closet shelf boxes makes a handy spot to hang belts, handbags and scarves.

Place all long garments on one end of the closet. This will enable you to create more space under the shorter garments for additional storage.

9 Put tanks and camisoles on a multihanger A tank top hanger is a great way to group like items and reduce the number of hangers needed by hanging up to eight garments per hanger.

Add a shelf unit

It may seem like you’re taking away valuable hanging space, but a shelf unit can be outfitted with baskets that can work like drawers, storing folding T-shirts, corralling flipflops, housing shoes or containing other odds and ends that clutter closet floors.
