Fresh Perspectives

L

et’s be honest. As much as we enjoy hopping around the globe, even the most intrepid frequent travelers run the risk of growing weary — all the planning, coming up with creative venues for meetings, learning to navigate a new city. Not to mention keeping up with new luxury hotel openings, the closing of favorite restaurants and unexpected changes in transportation systems. How can we keep things fresh and exciting when we’ve met with clients so many times in the same city? I am pleased to present Global Traveler’s solution: the 2016 Global City GuideTIME OUT: Janice Hecht strolling through a butterfly garden book. Once again, the well-traveled GT PHOTO: © JANICE HECHT team gathered the most up-to-date information about in-demand destinations around the globe and tucked it into an easy-to-use, take-along guide. Each city’s one-page report in the GCGB puts everything you need to know at your fingertips. Getting There and Getting Around offer the most efficient modes to transit from the airport and to navigate the city. (Notice mentions of the availability of Uber and Lyft rideshare programs in several cities this year.) If you’re looking to start the day with a power breakfast, seal the deal over a sophisticated lunch or infuse a bit of local culture into an event, you’ll discover inspiring options in the 9–5 section. And let’s not forget about free time. Whether you have an hour or an entire afternoon or you just want to unwind after work, After 5 will pique your interest with unique attractions to explore in your downtime. When I travel, downtime means getting a dose of the outdoors so I can clear my mind and renew my energy. I might amble through a botanical garden, like the ones in Denver and Bangalore, meander a shady arboretum or admire the manicured landscape of a palace grounds. A short walk through a city’s arts district or historic neighborhood has the power to provide a new outlook. To quote the author Henry Miller, “Our destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.” Let the Global City Guidebook offer that fresh perspective for your next destination. From Belgrade to Bogotá, from Mexico City to Moscow, from Rio to Rome, each city guide blossoms with ideas and venues ripe for the picking. On or off the clock, you’ll find everything you need for a successful visit to any one of these world-class cities. Enjoy your journeys — and be sure to take along the GCGB!

CHILE

METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

Santiago

PHOTO: © TIFONIMAGES | DREAMSTIME.COM

Chile’s capital and largest city, Santiago nestles between the beautiful Chilean Coastal Range and the snowcapped Andes, supplying incredible panoramic views at every turn. Colonial landmarks dating to the 18th century make up much of Santiago’s rich history and architecture. The Metropolitan Cathedral, Royal Court Palace and National History Museum all make great stops before checking out Barrio Brasil and Barrio Bellavista for a taste of Chile’s exciting nightlife.

GETTING THERE Most visitors arrive at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, a hub for LATAM Airlines, about 45 minutes from city center, depending on time of day. Many hotels offer airport transfers for a charge. For taxi transportation, buy a ride at official counters in the airport for about $30. Two bus companies connect the airport to city center. Centropuerto buses depart every 10 minutes 6 a.m.–11:30 p.m. from both terminals to Los Héroes bus terminal, costing about $2.50. Tour buses leave every 20 minutes 5 a.m.–midnight, stopping at the Alameda bus terminal and central Santiago for about $2.80.

GETTING AROUND

TwentyOne Bar & Lounge

Whiskey Blue

The five lines of Santiago’s Metro are clean and efficient. Travelers must use a prepaid, rechargeable Bip! Card on the public transport system, including the Micro bus. Purchase cards, approximately $2.50, at Metro stations, several banks and commercial locations across the city. Minimum Bip! credit is about $1; prices vary according to time of day, with rush-hour travel costing around $1.20. Call ahead for taxi service; official taxis are black with yellow roofs and cost about 45 cents initially, with another 20 cents per 200 meters.

For a multitasking breakfast with a view of the Andes, visit TwentyOne in San Cristobal Tower, A Luxury Collection Hotel minutes from Providencia. Along with a sumptuous panorama, the restaurant offers a scrumptious breakfast buffet that pays homage to English tradition with scones, pastries, cookies, sweet marmalades and delicious sandwiches.

Electrify your night at South America’s first nightclub from the Gerber Group inside the country’s first W Hotel. Colorful cocktails and light fare fuel the party while world-famous DJs spin global tunes into the early morning hours at this cutting-edge destination bar.

TURKEY

İstanbul

BLUE MOSQUE PHOTO: © JENMAX | DREAMSTIME.COM

Truly a cosmopolitan city, İstanbul’s location bridging Europe and Asia makes it one of the most multicultural cities in the world. The rich history of the destination — which began as Byzantium, became Constantinople and changed its name to İstanbul in the 1400s — lies in its crucial position at the center of several major empires. Currently İstanbul is the largest city by population in Europe and the seventh-largest globally. The climate is diverse, as it stays cold and snowy in winter and hot during the summer.

GETTING THERE Most travelers arrive at Istanbul Ataturk Airport on the European side. On the Asian side lies Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. Shuttle bus service is available to either Taksim or Kadiköy, departing Ataturk about every 30 minutes. The 40-minute ride costs around $4. Check with your hotel regarding free airport pickups. Subway and tram service must be combined to reach the city center, and the cumbersome route can take more than an hour. Taxis from the airport are relatively affordable, around $10.

GETTING AROUND Buses, minibuses, funiculars, ferries, catamarans, subways, trains, trams and trolleys — İstanbul has them all. Generally, they all cost about 80 cents one way, but visitors should purchase a transit pass to avoid paying for each leg of the trip. Dolmus, shared taxis with set routes displayed in the windshield, run from early morning to early evening. Taxis are plentiful and start at around $1. Your safest bet for a reliable taxi is to ask the hotel to call one.

9–5 360 Istanbul The four concepts of this dining outlet include cuisine, entertainment, vibe and ambience. For creative food with a beat and views of the city, dazzle clients with a lunch or dinner meeting at 360 Istanbul.

InterContinental Istanbul Centrally located in Taksim, the 5-star hotel offers a great place to stay for business or to conduct business in any of the 13 meeting spaces. City Lights Restaurant & Bar on the top of the hotel features panoramic city views, and Safran’s traditional cuisine complements live Fasil music.

Sütiş Start your day with breakfast at Sütiş, a popular local eatery at the end of Arnavutköy. Sit outside near the sea and enjoy traditional Turkish desserts and pastries alongside eggs and omelets.

MEXICO

Mexico City

NATIONAL PALACE IN MEXICO CITY PHOTO: © EDDYGALEOTTI | DREAMSTIME.COM

An ever-evolving destination with a growing culinary scene, vibrant street art and economic developments, Mexico City boasts a bustling metropolitan area of 16 boroughs and more than 300 neighborhoods. The historic center of the Mexican capital features many of the city’s most visited attractions including Templo Mayor, Zócalo, Alameda Park and the National Palace. With its sights set on the future, now is the time to experience this dynamic city on the rise. GETTING THERE Benito Juárez International Airport lies approximately eight miles from the city center. For taxi service, head to an authorized taxi booth marked “Taxi” before exiting the airport. Accept service only from staff members wearing bright yellow jackets or bibs labeled “Taxi Autorizado.” Boletos (tickets) range in price depending on the size of the car and the zone to which you travel. GETTING AROUND Opt to take public transportation rather than attempt to drive in this hectic, densely populated city. Good options include the Metro subway system (about 39 cents a ticket); RTP bus system (approximately $2, no matter the destination); electric trolley buses (about 31 cents per trip); and ECOBICI, a bike-sharing service offering more than 6,000 bikes at 444 stations throughout the city. (Users register with the program and pay around $26 for unlimited 45-minute journeys within a year; tourists can purchase a seven-day card for about $20.) 9–5 Il Becco Located at the Four Seasons Hotel Mexico, D.F., Il Becco offers sophisticated Italian cuisine in the heart of the city. Served from an open kitchen, the menu specializes in Piedmontese cuisine accompanied by fine Italian wines. Lunch service begins at 12 p.m. daily. Sample the signature dishes such as branzino baked in salt, vintage oil and Mediterranean lemon. Business casual attire is required on weekdays. Camino Real Polanco México If you’re looking for a hotel with meeting space that also offers a convenient location and lush accommodations, look no further than the Camino Real Polanco México. Located only a 30-minute drive from the airport, this 5-star hotel includes meeting space for groups of 10 to more than 4,000.

Hotel Habita At the Hotel Habita’s Lobby Restaurant, Executive Chef Fernando Maya turns out a simple yet delicious menu for your power breakfast. The food is what one would expect from an upscale but casual Mexican eatery — eggs rancheros, cecina and enfrijoladas — and the atmosphere is just as simple and chic. AFTER 5 Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso Many museums stay open until 5 p.m. in the Historic Center of Mexico City, but for another option after the workday ends, head to the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso. The architectural attraction and museum from the early 18th century, built by the Jesuits and later used as a school and military post throughout history, houses cultural and artistic exhibitions and stays open until 8 p.m. every Tuesday. Jules Basement This reservations-only cocktail bar, with its whiteand-black décor and tabletops propped atop giant skulls, is not your average place to grab drinks after dinner, but you’ll be glad you did. With weekly jazz performances and cocktail sessions themed after fan favorites like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, your evening will definitely be an experience to write home about. Paxia Paxia is a culinary creation from one of Mexico’s hottest chefs, Daniel Ovadia. Traditional ingredients

with a contemporary and innovative twist make his menu stand out. Try a tasting menu to get a fuller grasp of Ovadia’s creative talents. JAPAN

Tokyo

SUMIDA RIVER WITH SKYTREE PHOTO: © SEAN PAVONE | DREAMSTIME.COM

Home to more than 13 million people, Tokyo boasts one of the largest populations in the world and is the pride of Japan. Known for its vibrant food, fashion and nightlife, this international hot spot makes an ideal destination for business and fun. With an eclectic mix of ultra-modern architecture and traditional temples, shrines and gardens, this city offers an amazing blend of honored heritage and modern culture. From The Imperial Palace cherry trees to the Harajuku and Shibuya fashion districts, Tokyo erupts with life and color.

GETTING THERE Two major international airports service Tokyo. Narita International Airport, nearly 40 miles outside the city, can entail a burdensome — and expensive — airport transfer. Taxis typically cost $125–200, plus expressway tolls. About once an hour, nine-seat omnibus taxis depart the airport at a cost of $29–41; purchase tickets before departing the airport. Three bus services are also available. Haneda Airport, formerly mainly a domestic airport, now handles several international flights. Monorail service to the city center takes around 15 minutes for about a $4 fare; the Keikyu Airport Line, at 21 minutes, costs $5.

GETTING AROUND Taxis in Tokyo are expensive (about $6 for the first 1.25 miles, 80 cents for each 100 feet or 40 seconds’ wait time thereafter). Luckily, public transportation channels, while challenging to navigate, are clean, modern and efficient. Tokyo Metro operates nine underground lines, and Toei runs four, at about $1.50 for the shortest ride. The subways operate 5 a.m.–midnight, every three to five minutes. A one-day unlimited pass on the Jr Train — its most popular being the Yamanote Line with 30 stops — can be purchased for about $13.

9–5 Grand Hyatt Tokyo One of the city’s most sophisticated conference hotels, Grand Hyatt Tokyo boasts 17 event facilities and more than 30,000 square feet of conference and meeting space. To ensure your meeting is a success, the luxury hotel pairs its ample facilities with state-of-the-art technology and a dedicated team of eventplanning executives.

Oriental Lounge Make the most of your morning with a meal, coffee and a view at the Oriental Lounge. This popular venue in the Mandarin Oriental hotel serves a traditional breakfast called the Power Breakfast or small pastry bites with tea and coffee. The restaurant complements any business meeting with its lounge vibe, adding a level of comfort and ease to a morning meeting with friends or clients. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer a breathtaking view of the city and elevate the room to a great day or night space. 12 | GLOBAL CITY GUIDEBOOK | 2016

Peter Take your business lunch to new heights at Peter, perched on the 24th floor of The Peninsula Tokyo in the prestigious Marunouchi financial district. This sophisticated spot offers delectable grilled fare, from fresh seafood to premium cuts of meat like 40-day Japanese dry-aged strip loin, as well as stellar views of Tokyo’s Imperial Palace Gardens and Hibiya Park.

AFTER 5 Rooftop Bar Enjoy the mesmerizing, never-ending skyline of the world’s largest megalopolis with a well-mixed cocktail in your hand at the open-air Rooftop Bar of Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills. Crowning the hotel on the 52nd floor, the bar provides the right ambience for each guest’s personal choice, offering a tea lounge area with an intimate feel as well as a high-ceilinged bar and open-air terrace with a more cosmopolitan vibe.

Ten-ichi Highly regarded by both international and local foodies, Ten-ichi is one of the most famous tempura restaurants in the world, offering an ample selection of traditional Japanese tempura dishes. The restaurant’s award-winning menu has impressed many foreign dignitaries and celebrities since its founding in 1930.

not afraid of heights can see potentially all the way out to Mount Fuji. At night, the 360-degree panoramic view of the sprawling skyline is particularly enchanting from the Tembo Deck. For more vertiginous thrills, take a peek through the Tembo Deck’s small section of glass floor panels, providing views all the way to the ground, or venture to the upper observatory, the Tembo Galleria.

Lisbon Despite its recognition as one of the oldest cities in the world, Lisbon is a thoroughly modern metropolis and a hub of finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, trade, education and, of course, tourism. From the warm, welcoming people of Portugal’s capital and largest city to the city’s visually stunning landscape and historic appeal on to the coastline and picture-perfect beaches, Lisbon is a destination to discover.

GETTING THERE U.S. travelers with a passport valid for at least three months and staying for 90 days or less do not need additional documentation to visit Lisbon. Due to the city’s geographic position, Aeropuerto de Lisboa, about four miles from city center, is a gateway for many airlines, including Portuguese carriers TAP Portugal, SATA and Aerovip. Bus service departs the airport every 20 minutes from morning until night and travels to the train station for about $4–5. Taxis line up outside the airport and rides run about $15, with an additional charge per piece of luggage. LISBON STREET CAR PHOTO: © SEAN PAVONE | DREAMSTIME.COM

GETTING AROUND Lisbon is an easily walkable city, with many neighborhoods accessible by foot. The Metro covers most of the city with an expanding network, running 6 a.m.–1 a.m., and also offers a sightseeing opportunity with stations known for impressive artwork. A day pass costs about $5. NEW ZEALAND

Cook Islands

The 15 landmasses of the Cook Islands make up a beautiful archipelago in the South Pacific. Not yet overrun with tourists, the islands of about 11,000 inhabitants offer a tropical respite both luxurious and adventurous, with myriad activities sure to please every visitor. You’ll find the people friendly and each island welcoming, overflowing with the warm hospitality of a culture formed from traditional Polynesian heritage and European influences.

GETTING THERE International flights arrive at Rarotonga International Airport. With daily flights from New Zealand (AKL), twice-weekly flights from Tahiti (PPT) and weekly flights from Los Angeles (LAX) and Sydney (SYD), the airport receives around 100,000 visitors per year. Airlines servicing the destination include Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, Jetstar Airways and Air Tahiti Nui as well as Air Rarotonga, the Cook Islands’ domestic carrier. From the international airport travelers can head to other islands in the archipelago, though some feature a lone airstrip. Travelers may stay for up to 31 days with only a valid passport and return ticket; longer stays are evaluated on a monthly basis.

GETTING AROUND Travel by motorbike, moped or scooter is quite popular in the islands. All drivers must have a valid license, and those without a motorbike or scooter license in their home country must apply for one upon arrival. A bus route circles Rarotonga and offers day passes. If traveling from island to island, Air Rarotonga services the Southern Group of the Cook Islands on a regular schedule, but travel to the Northern Group generally requires a special request. Submit requests through a travel agent or by contacting the airline directly. Travel by yacht or sailboat is available if arranged beforehand, but ocean travel between the islands is often unreliable.

9-5 Nautilus Resort Rarotonga A small and eco-friendly luxury resort, Nautilus Resort Rarotonga offers spaces for corporate events from 20 up to 160 people. Private dining rooms and beachfront terraces make the perfect spot for a small conference, cocktail party for clients or company-wide seminar. Gourmet dining options and modern audio-visual tools ensure your business event is a success.

For meeting planners looking to get staff out of the boardroom for an enjoyable team activity, book one of the several eco bicycle tours offered by Storytellers. From three-hour beginner tours to five-hour tours for advanced bikers, each gives groups opportunities to learn the local culture, explore island history and discover traditional cuisine. It’s the perfect excuse to get away from the resort and into a more comfortable, revitalizing atmosphere.

One of the most popular after-hours activities in the islands, Te Vara Nui Village offers a cultural experience you’ll find nowhere else. Talented dancers and musicians perform classic Maori folklore amid a setting of lush foliage and waterfalls. A dinner of island cuisine preludes the performance. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. several times a week and lasts approximately two hours. The beautiful venue is also available for business conferences.

Rio de Janeiro also hosts the famous Carnival, a festival preceding the Lenten season similar to Mardi Gras.

GETTING THERE International flights come into Aeroporto Internacional Tom Jobim, or Galeão, located about 40–45 minutes from the city center. Make sure to arrange and pay taxi fare in advance. Almost anyone in the world can recognize Sydney Harbour with its unmistakable Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and Australia tops many travelers’ bucket lists. GETTING THERE Sydney Airport welcomes more than 90 airlines as a main travel hub for not only Australia but Asia Pacific as a whole. You can depart the airport via car, bus, shuttle, train or taxi. Taxis await at each terminal, and supervisors ensure a smooth flow of traffic. Large rental car brands such as Hertz and Avis are also available. Train stations are located within both the international and domestic terminals, with trains running every 10 minutes. Buses stop at terminals 1 and 3 on the arrivals levels.

Biking is not generally recommended as a way to get around the city.

The city draws both business and leisure travelers with its cultural, scientific, political and economic contributions. Take the time to explore the city’s thriving nightlife, world-class theater and elegant restaurants.

The city comprises a satisfying mix of work and play, offering a variety of business opportunities and a colorful culture fueled by cuisine, music and history.

GETTING THERE Addis Ababa Bole International Airport includes two terminals; Terminal 1 services domestic flights while Terminal 2 services all international flights. GETTING AROUND The most popular ways to get around the city include taxis and minibuses. Minibuses are usually more cost-efficient but are often crowded, and foreign visitors sometimes find the bus system difficult to use. Although taxis are more expensive, negotiating for a better price isn’t frowned upon. When walking, locals are often happy to assist if you’re unsure you’re headed the right way.

The menu item of choice is asa kitfo, a tilapia dish unique to the city but taking its roots from kitfo, seasoned, raw beef served at many Ethiopian restaurants. Despite its prevalence, however, some advise it’s not the best choice for unaccustomed stomachs.

Addis Ababa boasts a happening jazz scene, with Ethiojazz the prevalent style at many lounges and clubs. One of the most popular is African Jazz Village, a venue known for hosting famous faces such as Bob Marley until the Communist regime took over and silenced the city’s nightlife.
