Florida’s wild frontier With the exception of brief summertime thunderstorms, which come and go like clockwork, Florida’s weather makes it ideal for enjoying the outdoors. Head to the seaside piers and bridges, or rent one of the many available charter boats and soon you’ll understand why Florida is considered the Fishing Capital of the World. Think tarpon, grouper, speckled trout, king mackerel and snapper. In Palm Beach, private fishing yacht rentals are conveniently located near the more popular Palm Beach area hotels and resorts, such as The Breakers and the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach. In the Florida Keys, experienced boaters can even bring their own vessels and enjoy free use of Coral Bay’s protected harbour, marina and boat ramp. If you’re a spear fisherman, the west

coast’s Tampa Bay is one of the best places to hunt for gag or red grouper, as well as hogfish, cobia and more. If you’re a kayaker, canoer, rafter or tuber looking for some whitewater rapids to explore, Florida – typically known for its flat, smooth terrain – has a surprisingly good spot for this in Calhoun County’s Look and Tremble Falls, a Class I/II rapids. Those looking for a more serene paddling trail might try Econfina Creek, located north of Panama City Beach in northwest Florida, one of the most scenic kayaking trips in the state. If you’re visiting during summer months, A Day Away Kayak Tours offers nighttime paddling tours on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, where tiny bioluminescent plankton cause water around you to actually glow as you move along.

A place to kick back and relax While Florida’s array of activities can keep you busy, there are also plenty of ways to slip in some much-needed rest and relaxation, as simple or as decadent as you desire. Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa and The Resort at Longboat Key Club have teamed up with Aura Jets, a private jet charter broker, to offer a four-night, five-day package that includes a stay at each resort and private jet rental between both coasts. The package includes limo transport, champagne arrivals and dinners for two. In northeast Florida, historic Amelia Island is a laidback destination that boasts miles of wide, quiet, Atlantic beaches, where the whole gang will love horseback riding on the beach and discovering history firsthand at Fort Clinch State Park. Accommodations range from affordable hotels to quaint B&Bs to upscale resorts. Both the Ritz-Carlton and Omni Amelia Island Plantation offer children’s programs, giving parents time to explore on their own. In northwest Florida, the Portofino Island Resort’s Spa Portofino is the ultimate in pampering, with its seaweed facial and or beachside massage. Wining, dining and dancing the night away A vintage Bordeaux, presented for your tasting by a house sommelier. Freshly caught grouper bathed in butter and garlic. Heirloom tomatoes sliced thickly alongside milky buffalo mozzarella. An aged Châteaubriand tenderloin, served sizzling. If these images make your mouth water, you’ll find plenty of tantalizing dining options in Florida. Tampa’s Bern’s Steak House boasts steaks cut to order, one of the largest wine collections in the world and a famous dessert room worth visiting on its own. Miami’s Epic Hotel has two gastronomic hot spots with Area 31 Restaurant, which has a decadent brunch, and Zuma, which serves Japanese specialities. And Jacksonville’s Bistro Aix offers meatand-potatoes classics with a French flair. But you can also find delicious bites outside the metropolitan favourites, and many are worth it for the experience alone. Fort Lauderdalebased Windridge Yacht Charters has a rotating series of special voyages that include “celebrity pop-up restaurants” for the night, weekend brunch sailings and winetasting cruises. In the Anna Maria Island/Holmes Beach area, the Zagat-rated Beach Bistro has been the island’s most romantic, waterfront fine-dining destination for more than two decades. Try the garlicky, buttery “lobster-cargots.” Post-dinner entertainment isn’t hard to find in a state known to host spring breakers and vacationers looking for fun. Pensacola’s Seville Quarter, a restored brick complex with wroughtiron balconies reminiscent of New Orleans’ Bourbon Street, is filled with bars and eateries, many featuring live music, and east of Pensacola, Destin and Fort Walton Beach host some of northwest Florida’s hottest nightspots.

known for its nightclubs and bars, particularly along Seventh Avenue. The Centro Ybor complex has a 20-screen movie theatre and restaurants, the intimate Ybor City Wine Bar and Gametime, a favourite among kids and teens. Slightly off-track, tucked away on Eighth Avenue, is New World Brewery, a popular outdoor live music venue that has an impressive selection of craft brews, imports

and seasonal beers. And speaking of breweries, Florida’s craft beer scene has exploded in the last few years. St. Petersburg alone has had a half-dozen new breweries pop up in the city in the past two years. Just north of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, Tequesta Brewing Company recently won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival. And in Gainesville, Swamp Head Brewery has special-batch release events.

Soaking up the shops and culture For the weary traveller who wants to indulge in some retail therapy, Florida is a shopper’s haven, whether it’s for clothing, artwork or antiques. Halfway between Merritt Island and Melbourne, The Avenue shopping centre in Viera is a great open-air centre with tons of retailers, including national names, local merchants and speciality restaurants. Sarasota’s St. Armand’s Circle is famous for both its eclectic shops and its historical ties to John Ringling of Ringling Bros. Circus. Be sure to check out the enlightening Circus Ring of Fame alongside local boutiques such as co-ed clothing store Island Pursuit. In recent years, Florida has become known as a major arts

destination, with the re-opening of the dazzling Tampa Museum of Art in 2010, as well as recent openings of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers, and the designated Museum Park in downtown Miami. And there’s always something happening at Gainesville’s Curtis Phillips Center for the Performing Arts or the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. For a lesson in surrealism, visit St. Petersburg’s Dali Museum, rich in works from artist Salvador Dali’s 45-year career. Indeed, Florida’s weather is enough to draw visitors, but for those looking for a truly unique experience – whether it’s on the water, in a restaurant or at an acclaimed art exhibit – the Sunshine State has something for everyone.

After a night of cocktails with the city’s great minds discussing politics and quantum physics, get back on the I-10 for a short trip to Panama City - the perfect place to top up the tan.

Panama City Panama City Beach is an ecotourist’s dream! The Gulf of Mexico is home to some of Florida’s best fishing and diving, and is ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and parasailing. The coastline has some of the widest beaches in Florida with amenities and beach bars always nearby. A “must-stop” in Panama City is St. Andrews State Park. his party city is fast becoming an art and cultural hub. The glitz and glamour of America’s fastest growing city is definitely an experience. Miami has never been hotter as a destination for fashion, film, and music. New neighbourhoods, perfect weather, a vibrant restaurant scene, and exclusive nightclubs are just some of the reasons Miami is attracting the “it crowd” from all over the world. Miami is top place to invest in real estate, discover a new artist, or simply party like a rock star. And while the exotic lure of Miami’s nightclub and party scene may provide the initial attraction, the city’s day time activities is what keeps everyone coming back for more. Orlando is definitely leading this trend with well-developed areas like Universal Citywalk, Winter Park and International Drive, but even nearby Tampa Bay is quickly becoming know as a hot American city amongst hip travellers in the know. Referred to as “The Entertainment Capital of Orlando,” Universal CityWalk can be the first and last stop on a proper night out. The weather will always be right in Orlando, so grab a cheeseburger in paradise at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, and don’t forget the margarita. This Key West and Caribbean inspired bar and restaurant are a perfect dinner stop after a long day of being ripped through the air in the amusement parks. Once the sun goes down, continue on to a number of nightclubs and live music venues. Create a bit of your own music by heading to Rising Star Karaoke Club where visitors can perform with a live band complete with backup singers. Pointe Orlando, an entertainment centre just off Orlando’s popular International Drive or I-Drive as locals refer to it, is a constant party every night of the week. Church Street, the central hub of downtown nightlife scene, is also

home to unique and robust establishments. A series of craft brew purveyors to 1920’s speakeasies line downtown Orlando spreading their history, craft and passion. Further north in Winter Park, the main street, Park Avenue boasts more than 140 boutiques, side-walk cafes, galleries and museums surrounded by perfectly landscaped parks. You can tuck into a pint along with fresh seasonal dishes at nearby Cask & Larder. The ‘Southern Public House’ - as they refer to themselves, offers diners southern sourced seasonal dishes, craft beers brewed on-site and fresh-shucked oysters at their oyster bar. A short drive west of Orlando lays Tampa Bay, the pirate infested city on the water. Just kidding! Today, Tampa Bay is defined by southern charm and attractive waterfront living, blending lush friendly neighbourhoods with city living. A small metropolis on the water, this town is attracting young professionals from all walks of life. Definitely worth dropping by, is Cigar City Brewing, which brews over 30 seasonal and staple beers with unique tastes from Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Brown Ale to Guava Grove Farmhouse Ale. In the Latin Quarter of Ybor City, Tampa Bay Brewing Company serves nine house beers on tap. To soak up the booze, head down to the Columbia Restaurant, Florida’s oldest eatery serving the best “Cuban” sandwich in Tampa. And for last call the hip neighbourhood of Seminole Heights presents Cold Storage Brewery offering five craft beers including Florida Avenue Ale and Betchy Brown Ale – all which pair perfectly with the Tampa Bay weather! The celebratory dinners in Tampa Bay are always located at the infamous Bern’s Steak House.The U.S. Prime Beef is aged in a humidity and temperature controlled room until just right. Fish may still be king in Tampa Bay, but Bern’s deserves special attention for a special night out. Save room for desert at Bern’s, the well fashioned Desert Room (yes it is a separate room!) greets diner’s with a 65 page menu to ensure utter gluttony. After dinner cocktails are a must at 1920’s-inspired good times Ciro’s Speakeasy. Located in an unmarked building and requiring guests to say a password to enter, Ciro’s bills itself as beverage-centric and uses traditional and historic techniques to charm the ladies.

Reel it In

Nothing brings a bigger rush on a relaxing holiday than catching a jumping sailfish off the coast of Florida. With more than 7,700 lakes, 10,550 miles of rivers and 2,276 miles of tidal shoreline, Florida has no shortage of places to fish. It’s no wonder the state has produced more than 900 world records-that’s more than any other state or country. Not to be outdone by the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico, Florida’s freshwater fisheries comprise 3 million acres of lakes, ponds and reservoirs, and approximately 12,000 miles of fishable rivers, streams and canals-with no closed seasons. The recreational fishery resources alone in these waters provide entertainment for more than 1.4 million anglers annually. Quality Florida fishing holes exist all over the state, and from marinas in St. Pete’s to cantinas in Key West, colourful conversations take hold on the state’s best places to cast a line. The Florida Keys, a historical crowd favourite, are bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Straits of Florida on the other. Beyond the

reef, the water plunges to depths of over 1,500 feet. Here, colourful dolphin fish teem just below the surface along mats of floating Sargassum grass or pieces of driftwood. Billfish, the biggest prize of them all, cruise out there too. The Keys are surrounded by miles of shallow sand and grass flats. Here, species like the bonefish root out crabs, shrimp and small fish in water as shallow as six inches. Beautiful flats are found on the Atlantic side of the Keys and in the fabled backcountry, a region of uninhabited mangrove islands on the Gulf Side of the island chain. Backwater fishing, while not on the wide open water, brings its own unique set of challenges. Fishing from a pier is a popular pastime for many landlubbers around Tampa Bay. Piers offer anglers a chance to fish waters that cannot be reached from shore or wading. Many popular sport fish hang around fishing piers because they provide structure and food.

While only a select few, here are some of the most common fish found in Floridian waters: Tarpon: Sometimes called the “silver king of sport fish,” the tarpon is highly prized for its fighting ability but not valued as food. One of the state’s most popular game fish, tarpon can tolerate a wide range of salinities and are found throughout Florida.

Largemouth Bass: Florida’s official freshwater fish, the legendary largemouth has an international reputation. Anglers come from all over the world just to add a 10-pound bass to their “life list” of big fish. The king of the lakes and rivers, a big bass will eat just about anything, even squirrels or baby ducks.

Sailfish: Florida’s official state saltwater fish, this tackle buster inhabits tropical and subtropical waters. Sailfish usually travel alone or in small groups. Their outstanding feature, is the long, high first dorsal fin. Known for its high, acrobatic jumps, the sailfish is a favourite of blue-water anglers.

Grouper: A generic name for several deepwater species, these bottom dwellers are important to both recreational and commercial fishermen. Red grouper and gag grouper (sometimes called black grouper) are most popular with anglers. Anglers typically “bottom fish” for these species, but during the cooler months, they can be caught in shallow water by trolling artificial lures.

Spotted Sea Trout: Commonly known as speckled trout, it’s a schooling species usually found in the shallow waters of bays and estuaries. It has two large canine teeth in the upper jaw and feeds mainly on shrimp and small baitfish in grassy areas. One of Florida’s most popular sportfish, spotted sea trout will hit everything from top water plugs to saltwater flies.

Red drum: Commonly known as redfish, this shallow-water schooling fish is found in both salt and brackish water. It can be distinguished from the black drum by its lack of chin barbels and its more elongated body. It also has a large black spot (sometimes several spots) just before the tail. Once heavily overfished, this species is now a conservation success story.

Snappers: An offshore species usually found at depths of 60 to 440 feet. Red snapper is pinkish to red in color, and its pointed anal fin distinguishes it from other members of the snapper family. Juvenile red snapper once died by the millions in shrimp trawls, but new regulations have helped this species bounce back. Red snapper are considered one of the finest food fish found in Florida waters. Mackerels: This family includes both king mackerel and its smaller cousin, Spanish mackerel. These fish can be found in the western Atlantic Ocean from Maine to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the state’s top ocean predators, kingfish are the favourite target of tournament fishermen.

Crafting a Lifestyle in St. Pete’s

or years a lesser known stop when compared to nearby Orlando and Tampa Bay, St. Pete’s is starting to craft a reputation of its own, quite literally. This vibrant Gulf Coast city enjoys a picturesque harbour dotted with sail boats ready to explore the vast Gulf of Mexico. Besides flocking to the beautiful wide sandy beaches, visitors to St. Pete’s, or St. Petersburg’s if you want to be formal, are heading to the city’s many craft breweries or laid back watering holes to enjoy a unique, locally crafted lager. While established restaurants catering to seafood and fish lovers are in abundance, the local craft beer scene has really started getting St. Pete’s noticed as of late and attracting some serious worldwide attention for this rising city on the water. The city is home to the state’s oldest and newest craft brewers. Roughly 14 craft brewery operations dot St. Pete’s from Tarpon Springs to Treasure Island, with new ones popping up all the time. The special attraction being many of the independent brewers are able to experiment with flavours and content - with labels being produced in small batches not available elsewhere. So have the local bartender yank down the tap, order some oysters and hot sauce, and settle into the Gulf lifestyle in St. Pete’s. Just like California’s wine country the breweries of St. Pete’s are spread over roughly an hour’s drive. Some in newly refurbished warehouses, some in dimly lit kitchens right on the beach, but all are creating unique tastes and refining the city’s reputation. The chance to experience craft, artisanal beer right where it’s made, talk with the brewer, enjoy samples with other beer nuts and even take some home is an opportunity not to be missed. 3 Daughters This former plumbing supply building on the edge of the Warehouse District and Grand Central District is getting some serious

respect for their barrel-aged stouts. 3 Daughters is home to a 30 barrel brew house, 2,000 square foot tasting room, and a lot of fine brews. Check out the Summer Storm oatmeal stout for something beyond unique.

Barley Mow Brewing Company If you haven’t heard, America is fast becoming an IPA country. What is an IPA you ask? Indian Pale Ale, they are smooth, strong, and popular and the Brits might have a crush on them soon enough. Striking off a craze in America from Boston to San Francisco and back to St. Pete’s, Indian Pale Ales are what attracts the fan base and what makes the Barley Mow a delightful stop on your craft brew journey. With 14 taps on hand, Barley Mow is rather small, but the flavours are big, try the Grapefruit Pale Ale, after all it is Florida!

Dunedin Brewery Soak up the history in Florida’s oldest craft brew house, Dunedin Brewery is a charming operation with live music and a Scottish touch. The Red Head Ale is a popular selection, most likely homage to an inspirational figure from the Old Country. This local is steeped in tradition and aims to provide a sense of community in the St. Pete’s area, along with the best tasting micro-brews in Florida.

Rapp Brewing Company This small warehouse operation breathes new life into forgotten styles like Gose and Lichtenheiner, with a 20-tap tasting room and wide array of finely crafted German-centric brews, Rapp Brewing is starting to put older, well established labels on the back leg. Rapp’s Berliner Weisse a low alcohol wheat beer is refreshingly delightful in Florida’s sun, pair it with the day’s fresh catch for a sublime experience.

Faster than the eye can discern, the demonstrator’s hand is back by his hips. He’s unscathed. The audience can breathe again.
