THERE IS a superb book by Norman Vincent Peal entitled the Power of Positive Thinking, which has sold over fifteen million copies. One must ask oneself, what motivates such vast numbers of people to buy a book on the subject of thinking positively? After reading the first chapter or two, the reason comes to light. In this competitive world, when millions of people are trying to get ahead of their contemporaries to reach the ‘treasures’ of materialism, and when the yardstick of success is chosen by high performance in the workplace, millions find it difficult to make it! If they could reach the performance of the winners, the yardstick standard would be raised, creating a higher hurdle for those who now become losers, so there is a ready market for his book. People who have a low respect for themselves are pessimistic and unhappy. Mr Peale's book helps to reverse those feelings, and that must be part of it's appeal. He describes numerous ways of boosting optimism, ones self-respect, one's ego, and one's capability to do anything, if one sets one's mind to it.
