My Favourites: Ludvig scheja Six years ago, Ludvig Scheja and his friends founded Triwa, a watch label aimed at the younger market. From the tunnel-vaulted lower ground foor, all curved ceilings and candlelight, to the upper-level dining rooms that exude 18th-century elegance, this is a captivating townhouse. In looking at traditional Stockholm, it’s impossible to ignore Swedish craft because this is such an essential part of the country’s culture. Svensk Slöjd is a tiny workshop and

heritage is refected by Stockholm’s trailblazing design label, Acne, whose fagship store is housed in a striking, 18th-century building that was formerly a bank. In seeking out such heritage treasures you see how old Scandinavia lives on in the city. Gamla Stan, which translates as Old Town, is a warren of medieval buildings and cobbled streets, of which the oldest parts date back 800 years. There are echoes of old Stockholm at Stortorget, whose ancient square is lined with handsome merchants’ houses painted in shades of sepia and orange; there’s no glass or gleaming steel here. Gamla Stan also boasts the Royal Palace, the gothic cathedral and some of the most historic institutions in the city. The old-fashioned shutters and rustic signage outside Den Gyldene Freden are the frst indications that this eatery is a passage back to another era. According to the Guinness Book of Records it is the city’s oldest restaurant. It was founded as a tavern in 1722, and its place in Stockholm lore was secured when it was

store that celebrates the joys of handmade products. It sells traditional wooden dala horses, beautifully painted with swirling forals. Originally designed for children, these horses developed as a Swedish craft in the 19th century and now they are equally enchanting for adults looking for an unusual ornament. Other striking, handcrafted pieces include embroidered cushions, rugs and blankets in traditional Skåne wool as well as trinkets, fgurines and brooches. In the cutting-edge world of Swedish design, it’s heartening to note that not everything is driven by new innovation. Design label Svenskt Tenn has continued to respect traditional artisan production since it was founded by Estrid Ericson in 1924. Craft was, and still is, integral to the label: inspired by the British Arts and Crafts Movement,

CARRY A CLASSIC Form follows function when Swedish designers turn their attention to bags. Josh Sims discovers a practical but stylish range of durable, good-looking pieces Could a heritage of enjoying the great outdoors, matched with a deeply practical design history, make a country especially adept at producing attractive but utilitarian bags? It is perhaps a convoluted argument, and yet it seems borne out by the carrier culture of Sweden. One of its leading lights, Sandqvist, argues just that: the company says that its bags are ‘for an urban lifestyle, to be used every day’ and are inspired by ‘Nordic nature, with its mountains, lakes and vast unpopulated areas’. Think of them as antidotes to the hyped and invariably impractical ‘It’ bags.

‘My design approach is always about coming back to functionality – answering the question “What do I want this bag to do?”,’ says Anton Sandqvist, who founded the 10-yearold company. ‘Invariably that means you don’t want anything complicated. In fact, you look at a design and wonder what else you can remove from it. That’s an historic way of doing things in Nordic countries – people were necessarily self-reliant and whatever they made was for a certain purpose. That heritage is still visible in design here today.’ Sandqvist’s bags present a good distillation

of Swedish bag design principles: thought through, with pockets in the right places; hardwearing and made to age well; constructed in materials such as canvas, leather and more technical fabrics like Cordura; considerately sized – big enough to be useful, not so big that they can’t be used with ease; and essentially classic – backpacks, messenger bags, laptop carriers and the like. The same might be said of Udonly, a line created by Sanna Bremmer, whose best-known, simple bag style was inspired by an old British postman’s bag – although Bremmer’s version was scaled down and made in organically treated vegetable-tanned leather. Bremmer, who also designs small leather goods, was driven to design her frst bag for perhaps the most un-glitzy reason imaginable: the need for a good-looking bag in which to carry nappies and other baby-changing paraphernalia. ‘I had a lot of friends having babies but there was no bag available that was practical and attractive, or that men would want to carry. says Bremmer, who this season launched her frst line of bags in canvas. ‘Sure, my bags are not about doing anything trendy – but customers seem to appreciate that they have clean lines and are well-constructed. They’re bags that should last a lifetime, not ones to change every season. That seems especially right for the times now too.’ Local fashion brands such as Acne, Hope and Whyred also ofer cutting-edge accessories including bags, while other Swedish companies are more traditional: Palmgrens, for example, was established as a saddle-maker in 1896, thanks to the backing of the mayor of Stockholm. By the 1950s it had created a modern classic in its tote bags with rattan sides fxed between a leather frame; although in more recent years Palmgrens has taken a more contemporary approach to its products too, thanks to a collaboration with Swedish architect Thomas Sandell. The essential utility factor of many Swedish bag-makers’ style is perhaps summed up by Pap (Products And Philosophy). Pap, which launched just four years ago, specialises in leather cases to hold all your personal tech, but also has a nice line in ‘poop purses’ – wallets to hold small plastic bags used for

clearing up after your dog. It’s a practical consideration one certainly would struggle to fnd among the bag-makers of Paris or Milan. Unsurprisingly, Ulf Pyk, the founder of Pap, did not train in accessories design, but in cabinet-making, product design and interior architecture. ‘We make everything in Sweden because, although that is more expensive, it means we have total control over the way the products are made,’ says Anna Pyk, Ulf’s partner. ‘But, while the way our products are

made is important, it’s also about following a slim, stylish form language. Often the simplest thing can be the hardest to design well.’ That is certainly true. Today, Swedish style has a distinctive presence in shopping centres from London to New York, particularly with Cos, Acne and Cheap Monday making waves internationally. Now another sartorial name can be added to this fashion frmament: Tiger of Sweden. The label has been devised to appeal to the middle market, an area in which Swedish

Tiger of Sweden’s aesthetic is clean, contemporary and tailored

designers excel, and since it was relaunched in the 1990s it has gone from strength to strength. The gleaming Tiger of Sweden store in Stockholm’s Jakobsbergsgatan, a street bustling with the city’s stylish young, is quite a contrast to the label’s rustic beginnings. It was in windswept, rural Uddevalla on the west coast that Marcus Schwartzman and Hjalmar Nordström set out to reinvent tailoring in 1903. At a time when men went to a tailor to buy a new suit they decided to take fabrics and measuring tapes to customers. They began producing ready-made suit models that could be fne tuned; one of the earliest of these was named Tiger, and the moniker stuck. Soon the brand began experimenting with innovative cuts, which were slimmer and more streamlined, and tweaking fabric production.

After a quiet period in the 1980s, the label was relaunched by CEO Roger Tjernberg in 1993 with the aim of continuing to rework and reinterpret classic tailoring, or as Tjernberg elegantly put it, ‘taking the suit out of the bank and into the street’. Today the label has stores from Canada to South Africa and is set to open a raft of shops in Asia this year.

Much of its current look is masterminded by designers Tine Grandahl and Shena Neville who explain that Tiger of Sweden’s aesthetic is clean, contemporary and tailored. men, for those inclined to be that little bit more daring). The womenswear collection is sharp and has masculine undertones, with sleek suits and jackets over minidresses. They agree that Scandinavia is unique in its support of fedgling labels and innovative fashion ideas. ‘It’s good at producing new brands that go on to become really successful.

The Scandinavian aesthetic also fts perfectly into the minimalist trend.’ For the two designers, the city’s striking position is key to their creative process. ‘Since Stockholm comprises many islands, it has a unique character. There’s a special contrast of city and nature.’ In seeking inspiration, the designers tend to head to the cultural hotspots

such as Fotografska, the city’s leading photography gallery, and Moderna Museet. They also mention Stockholm’s archipelago and the remote island of Gotland. One of Tiger of Sweden’s neat, checked jackets and sturdy pair of boots would be perfect for such an excursion tigerofsweden.com

According to Björk & Berries ‘tough conditions that we Scandinavians have due to our climate are how our beauty routines have developed historically’; for example, there’s no point blow-drying your hair to perfection only to go out into a snowstorm. ‘We have to be strong and healthy to look good during these conditions. The Swedish are the defnition of natural beauty.’ So it fgures that skincare and make-up products that are made in Sweden aim to help wearers achieve perfect complexions, and that these are becoming the country’s biggest beauty export. ‘i love walking and the Royal Djurgården is the most beautiful place to walk in Stockholm. it is unreal that this natural area is just a fve-minute walk from the city’s core. i usually start at the royal motorboat Club. ‘my favourite restaurant in Stockholm is Riche. it’s ideal for breakfast, Sunday brunch, for a glass of wine or for dinner – in fact for any occasion. it’s always crowded and there’s always something going on. You’ll need to make a reservation for dinner since it’s always fully booked! ‘Another great place for a meal is PA & Co. This place is very small and cosy and is the best venue for a romantic dinner; my husband and i eat here whenever we can fnd a reason to celebrate something. it

The walls are black and the vibe is relaxed but usually busy. ‘i love reading books and my favourite bookstore is Antikvariat Oceanen. it is just a few steps from our apartment, so i visit the shop quite often. The store is very small but it has an enormous range of books, mostly fction. The owner knows everything about the world of books. He tells me anecdotes about famous writers and he always recommends something new that never fails to be a fantastic read. ‘118 Second Läder is owned by my friend Eva. She collects and sells vintage leather jackets, boots and furs and has done so for more than 25 years. There is also a small jeans brand in the back of the shop that houses the underground label Clash Jeans.’

‘my husband’s best friend Edin owns Dusty Deco * p.100, the best furniture store in Stockholm. He has two shops, one on the south side and one on the east side. He sells vintage furniture, a mix of rough industrial pieces with a great patina, design classics, photo art, beaten up leather chairs and beautiful objects he and his wife fnd on their travels. You can also fnd my handmade jewellery pieces for sale at Dusty Deco on Sibyllegatan. ‘i frst went to Fasching when i was 16, when i performed on stage. World famous soul singers and jazz legends have all performed here, but the stage is also open for new acts. On Saturdays, it’s a disco playing northern soul with dancing until 4am. There’s a long queue but everyone gets in, and it’s always worth it. ‘Obaren has been the place for live music in

Но ни у кого не было вместительной и красивой сумки, которую мог бы использовать и мужчина. Они пользовались чем-то вроде корзины для пикника, - рассказывает Бреммер о первой линии аксессуаров из канваса. – Конечно, мои модели не в авангарде модных трендов, но покупатели ценят их ясные силуэты и продуманность. Такая сумка должна прослужить целую вечность, ведь их не будут менять каждый сезон. И это, на

мой взгляд, вполне соответствует духу времени». Есть сумки и в коллекциях Acne, Hope и Whyred. Однако среди всего этого авангардного многообразия обращают на себя внимание более традиционные явления. Компания Palmgrens, например, была основана при поддержке мэра в 1896 году как седельная мастерская.
