Wednesday 24 January 1973 Ammunition uncovered in Andersonstown Ninty rounds of ammunition have been discovered in the Garden of a house in Bingnian Drive in Andersonstown. The find was made by soldiers during a routine search. Wednesday 24th January 1973 Weapons found in loyalist areas A joint Army-RUC patrol has found a number of weapons in the predominantly Protestant Heathfield area at the rear of Finiston School Army post. The find in one house included an automatic pistol, a baton, a knife and an extensive medical kit which included a stethoscope and gloves. In a second house, a shotgun, revolver, two rounds of ammunition and some brandy were discovered. Wednesday 24th January 1973 Shots fired at Army posts Army posts at Butler Street and Finiston School have come under fire during the night. Three shots were fired at soldiers in the Butler Street post and one shot was returned. No hits were claimed. Around the same time the Finiston post was attacked but no one was injured. And fire was not returned. Wednesday 24th January 1973 Mobile patrol attacked In the Shantallow area of Derry a mobile patrol was attacked with petrol bombs but no one was injured and at Shackleton Barracks at Ballykelly two bursts of gunfire were heard. The incident is still being investigated and no other details are known. Wednesday 24th January 1973 Girl attacked in Sion Mills A 17-year-old Catholic girl has been attacked for the second time in two weeks. In the first attack, she had a cross cut into her forehead while on her way to work at Herdman’s Mill. In this the latest attack, she was beaten up by three masked men. Wednesday 24th January 1973 Dublin alert There was traffic chaos in the centre of Dublin due to a bomb alert received by the Garda. On the basis of a message from the RUC that a bomb had been left in the centre of Dublin, O’Connell Street was sealed off. Nothing was found and the city returned to normal.

Wednesday 24th January 1973 Border shooting Soldiers have returned fire at a gunman who opened fire on them at the border at Clady. No one was injured and no hits were claimed. Wednesday 24th January 1973 IRA leader addresses public meeting Provisional IRA leader, David O’Connell, who is on the run from the Garda, has made an appearance at a public meeting in Cork. About 400 people attended the meeting in the Stardust Ballroom which was organised by the recently formed Irish Civil Rights Association. Special Branch Gardai were on duty at the front entrance but shortly before the meeting ended, O’Connell entered the hall through a back entrance and gave a short address. He left again through the back door, unnoticed by the Gardai. Wednesday 24th January 1973 Belfast bombs A bomb has exploded at the Corporation Executive Office in Hill Street, Belfast. But although the building suffered severe interior damage there does not appear to be any struc-
