White Heat James Cagney is unforgettable as vicious, unpredictable psychopath Arthur Cody Jarrett in one of the finest gangster films ever made. A ruthless killer with an unhealthy devotion to his mother, Jarrett becomes public enemy number one for cop Hank Fallon (Edmond O’Brien) who risks his life to go undercover and infiltrate Jarrett’s gang. A scorching companion piece to The Public Enemy, White Heat features one of Cagney’s most psychologically detailed and forceful performances. A chilling portrait of a killer in a tense thriller with a blazing finale that has become part of movie history.

Why Can’t Women Make Feature Films? Two filmmakers, a critic and a programmer look at the gender gap, roll up their sleeves and get myth-busting on common misconceptions about female filmmakers and the struggles they face in making the transition from short films to features. Noé Mendelle (Scottish Documentary Institute), Hannah McGill (Sight & Sound, The List) Kate Taylor (Independent Cinema Office) and Tom Kalin (Columbia University) will take a series of familiar complaints, rip them to shreds, and then read the shreds like tea leaves, looking forward to a time when the question ‘How does it feel to be a woman filmmaker?’ is never asked again.

Why We Fight: Scottish Competition 4 Five of the twenty-four films competing for the Scottish Short Film Award. A relationship implodes in Ruth Paxton’s visceral Nevada, while two friends turn against one another in Neil Hartop’s Rabbit Punch. A rivalry is played out more sportingly in Pouters by Paul Fegan, while Sara Ishaq’s Karama Has No Walls explores bravery and tragedy during the Yemeni revolution. Stuart Elliott’s three minute quickie Ollie – his second film in competition this year – completes the programme. Full details are provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.
