Highlander

Sean Connery as a foppish Spaniard, Christopher Lambert as a French-accented Scotsman and a pulsating Queen score form the abiding memories of this classic 1980s fantasy adventure. Lambert’s immortal Connor MacLeod battles through the centuries with the help of Connery’s mentor towards a showdown with The Kurgan at The Gathering in modern day New York. Revel once again in the glorious Highland locations, magical songs, endlessly quotable dialogue (‘I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. And I am immortal.’) and oodles of head-lopping action before they remake it. There can be only one!

A Hijacking Kapringen

The sweaty, claustrophobic reality of being held captive at sea is captured with an unusual level of authenticity in this riveting Danish thriller. In the middle of the Indian Ocean, a Danish freighter is captured by Somali pirates. They demand an enormous ransom for the safe return of the ship and crew. The flinty, ice-cool head of the shipping company assumes responsibility for the negotiations and refuses to give in to their demands. As weeks of stalemate pass, the crew begin to fear for their lives and surrender to despair in a tense, simmering drama with all the nail-biting immediacy of a news bulletin.

The History of Future Folk Sent from the dying planet Hondo on a mission to wipe out the human race and prepare Earth for colonisation, Bill (or General Trius) fails to carry out his orders when he discovers the invention of music and develops a passion for acoustic bluegrass. However, his plans to dedicate the rest of his life to the study of music are foiled when Hondo send bumbling assassin Kevin to knock him off and complete the mission in his place. Managing to convince him otherwise, the two aliens join forces and, forming the bluegrass duo Future Folk, set out to save Hondo, Earth and prevent intergalactic warfare. A charming, quirky tale reminiscent of Flight of the Conchords.

Hooray for Hollywood: International Competition 7 Tinseltown gets a strip-search in our seventh international selection. A-list stars unwittingly create their own experimental film in Hollywood Movie, while Star Wars becomes an unfortunate influence in The First Hope. Jerry & Me charts a turbulent history through Jerry Lewis movies, and melodrama Burning Hearts transforms into something very different. Finally, Virgil Widrich’s Warning Triangle shows up Hollywood’s love affair with the car as something approaching hardcore pornography. What a swellegant, elegant party this is! Full details of all the films are provided in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

The House of Stories: Lisa Marie Hall Workshop An opportunity for creative filmmakers to explore the maps, music and mirrors of Production Design in an unconventional way. BAFTA award-winning designer Lisa Marie Hall (This is England ’86) takes you on an interactive journey showing how stories are painted on screen and how set design can transform your characters. The workshop has two parts: 1) Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary (or all the things no one told you about Production Design) and 2) Life as a Storyteller (or all the things no one told you about becoming a Production Designer).

How to Make Money Selling Drugs The ‘war’ on drugs can never be won and only creates a violent criminal underworld that rips the heart out of communities. That is the main conclusion from Matthew Cooke’s satirical documentary that uses sly humour to make some serious points. Expert celebrity testimony confirms the way in which drugs touch all levels of society in America but punishment is disproportionately heaped upon the poorest and the black community. Airing the arguments for rethinking drug laws, Cooke also provides us with a video game element that offers a step-by-step guide on how to create your own drug empire, from dealing on a street corner to running a major cartel.
