Caroline and Jackie Caroline (Marguerite Moreau) and Jackie (Bitsie Tulloch) are very close. Celebrating Caroline’s birthday, the two sisters look set to enjoy an evening with Jackie’s new partner and a few close friends. However, secrets come to the fore as one troubled sister confronts the other and the entire group is dragged into an arduous night of emotional conflict. Written and directed by Adam Christian Clark, this dark familial drama constantly keeps the audience second-guessing, as the ambiguous motivations of the leads slowly reveal themselves. With twitchy editing and cinema-verité style camerawork, the film perfectly captures the ever-questionable psychosis of the two sisters.

Caroline Sascha Cogez 1 Born in Paris, Caroline Sascha Cogez began her career in films working as assistant director to Lars von Trier on The Idiots, Dancer in the Dark and Dogville. She has since built up an impressive body of shorts in fiction, documentary, commercials and music promos. In the first of two programmes of her work, we screen three bittersweet and wryly comic films in which she explores themes of lost love and quiet rebellion. More information about Caroline’s work can be found in the Glasgow Short Film Festival brochure.

Caroline Sascha Cogez 2 The second programme in our Caroline Sascha Cogez retrospective consists of three very different experimental documentaries. Between Rooms captures the drab, functional surroundings of the sex worker, while She Sings, enjoying its UK premiere at Glasgow Short Film Festival, transports us to the secretive kingdom of Bhutan, where TV talent contests exist alongside mermaids and magic monkeys. Finally, fiction-doc-promo hybrid Show Stopper sketches an awkward encounter between a Danish masseuse and pop star Peaches.

Cartoon College Each year, many would-be comic illustrators enrol in The Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont with dreams of making a living through their trade. Stripping away any perceptions of glamour or instant fame and fortune for successful graduates, this wry and compelling feature documentary paints a vivid picture of the boot camplike conditions and harsh criticisms levelled at those who don’t make the mark, while making no bones about the drudgery of the job for those who do. Featuring interviews with some of the most famous names in independent comics, including Art Spiegelman and Chris Ware.

China Heavyweight The award-winning documentary China Heavyweight introduces us to three aspiring boxers at a training academy in Southwest China. In the spotlight is enigmatic Coach Qi who searches for raw talent in the secondary schools and fields of Sichuan province. Those chosen leave the poverty of their parents’ farms in the hopes of winning medals and honour for their country. As Coach Qi attempts to resurrect his own career, director Chang entwines his quest with the fate of young recruits who worry that they’ll never make it. A sobering depiction of the daily challenges facing ordinary Chinese people, as the conflict between communist ideals and Western individualism transforms China.

Cinecafe presents Gangster No. 1 In homage to GFF’s James Cagney retrospective, the inaugural night of Cinecafe at the Poetry Club gets off to a glorious start with this modern gangster classic. Directed by Scottish born Paul McGuigan, Gangster No. 1 charts the journey of an unnamed besuited ‘gangster’ as he traverses the criminal underworld of 1960s London and features a career-making performance from Paul Bettany. Enjoy this crime epic in a relaxed, informal cafe setting – a great place to watch and talk about movies. For more information visit www.swg3.tv.
