A kitten heel is a short, slender heel about 1.5 to 2 inches high, with a slight curve setting the heel in from the edge of the shoe. ‘Sex And The City’ favourite Manolo Blahnik has added kitten heeled shoes to his collection, saying that his famous high stilettos have been copied so often that he was inspired to create a heel at a new, shorter height. As fashion has swung back towards a more understand aesthetic, these low - key heels feel fitting once again.

Kitten Heels

Ankle Boots 2

12. JANUARY ISSUE

They vary in length — from booties or shoe boots (a shoe that skims the ankle) to boots that cover the lower part of the calf. Ankle boots work with any kind of pants. If you are teaming your shoes with a skirt, look for skirts that are a couple of inches above the knee or shorter. Avoid wearing ankle boots with cropped pants or tights, mid - length skirts, pencil skirts, shorts or capris.

Also called Dolly shoes, ballet pumps or ballerina flats, they are derived from woman’s soft ballet slipper, with a very thin heel or the appearance of no heel at all. Ballet flats took off last when Audrey Hepburn wore them with skinny jeans in the 1957 film Funny Face. Naturally, skinny jeans with a T-shirt or a tunic accompanied by ballet pumps create a stylish casual look. Ballet flats can also go with cropped pants, shorts and capris. For partying, they come in gold, bronze and silver and adorned with sequins and jewels.

Ballet Pumps Stilettos Singer Jessica Simpson loves heels so much that she refuses to wear flat shoes, even when she’s at home. Priyanka Chopra adores them. “The higher the better,” she says. And we couldn’t agree more. Even a pair of jeans and T-shirt can take on an entirely different look when a pair of heels is added. For centuries, women have used these pencil-thin, killer heels to give the optical illusion of longer legs, smaller feet and greater height, but most importantly, sex appeal.

Funky Flats Supermodel Elle Macpherson once said: “I used to wear heels because I wanted to show people I wasn’t ashamed of being tall. But I don’t wear them anymore because you don’t have to wear heels to be beautiful.” If you’re anxious about looking frumpy, we suggest you pick up flats in funky colours and styles.

Want healthy shiny

hair?

By NATURE’S WAY

If your hair is a little shorter than you would like it to be, or if you are experiencing hair loss, you may want to try a few herbal remedies to make hair grow. Using herbs is a good idea if you have a sensitive scalp and want to avoid chemical hair products. For the most part, herbal remedies are completely natural. It should be noted however, that there is still a chance of an allergic reaction if you are applying herbal solutions to your scalp or if you are ingesting herbs orally. Testing just a small amount of the herb on your scalp or in your stomach is a good idea before applying or ingesting the full amount. If you do have an adverse reaction, you should cease using the herb immediately, and contact a physician for advice.

Herbs that make your hair grow? Rosemary This herb has many different uses, and is frequently associated with hair growth. It is thought that rosemary can help to make hair sleeker and shinier, and also helps to combat dandruff, which is known to cause and accelerate hair loss. You can either include more rosemary in your food, or you can create a hair rinse from rosemary leaves be simmering the leaves in water for 10 minutes. Throw away the leaves, pour the cooled rosemary water over your hair, and then rinse it out with cool water.

14. JANUARY ISSUE

Chamomile In addition to having a lovely smell, chamomile is thought to have many healing properties. Many holistic practitioners recommend an infusion of chamomile be used as a hair rinse after washing hair to soothe an itchy scalp, which is known to cause hair loss.

Horsetail Whether used in a tea, taken orally, or mixed in with shampoo, horsetail encourages hair growth

Birch Oil This oil works well when mixed in with shampoo, and can also be mixed with other oils and applied to the hair or scalp. Birch oil is thought to support current hair growth, encourage new hair growth, and condition the hair against the elements.

Ginkgo Ginkgo is used for a variety of different things, including hair follicle stimulation. This herb is known to help with circulation-something very important to new and improved hair growth.

FEW MORE WAYS > Eating well will stimulate hair growth and result in healthier hair. For a diet for healthy hair, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables while staying away from refined sugar, preservatives, and artificial flavor. > Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine. Many medical experts believe caffeinated beverages can stunt hair growth. > Learn ways to reduce the stress in your life. The less stress you have, the better your hair and skin looks. > Hair care products can clog and damage hair follicles if used in excess. Try to keep hair spray and other product usage to a minimum. Using herbs to make hair grow is natural and easy, whether you’re trying to grow your hair longer or want to guard against hair loss, with the benefit of being healthier and giving hair other pleasant effects as well‌!! SHOED UP! R A E W

16. JANUARY ISSUE

E R A U O Y T A WH

NAME Rahul Rattu AGE 22 OCCUPATION Student, NIFT Delhi

My connection to shoes runs old to my childhood days, I loved playing football, still do. Somehow, football and shoes are my passion for creating something unique and personalised gave birth to “Shoed Up!” Creativity isn’t born on a single day, it is spurts of creative sunshine time and again, internal inspiration fuelled by external motivation propelled me to take the paintbrush in my hand and start doodling whatever came in my way. In my sports drill, I used to get bored seeing plain white PT shoes on every pair of feet. It seemed like blank canvas for my paintbrush. The strokes of my creativity earned me the title of “the BEST ARTIST” in the year 2007 in my school. It was then I started experimenting and as if the first rays of sunshine lights up the world, the artist, in me found the way through my brush strokes. Much to my surprise, my family and friends were not really surprised when I cleared entrance tests into NIFT Delhi. Although, it came as a big push to me.

When I got through NIFT, it became stimuli to take my hobby to a higher level. Then I started customising wayfarers, headphones in addition to the footwear that I was already doing. It was a hit among my friends and college people, who could relate the need of customised merchandise. As my designs explored new dimensions, and my products reached a diverse category of clients, I came up with the name “Rahul Rattu Shoed Up! for my customised merchandise, wayfarers, headphones and canvas shoes come under the range of products that I deliver. Although I find the art of doodling very appealing and it holds a lot of creative potential, as it has no restrictions and infinite possibilities can be made. But since I love to experiment with my art that is how I have learned what I have learned.

By experimenting, and improving upon my designs and taking inspiration from the books that I read, the movie that I watch, and the music I listen to. I like to take the expectations of my client as a challenge to explore the unventured realms of my creativity. Success doesn’t come alone; I haven’t come the long way all by myself, my family, friends and my teachers have supported me a lot. My family has always been by my side. Among the teachers I would always have a place in my heart and respect for Neeti Banga ma’am as she as encouraged me from the very beginning of my college. And not to forget to mention my friends Sagar, Albha and Ruchika, who has not just given me support to do well but also the exact push that I needed to do well each day. In the year 2011, the annual fest held in our college was a big turning point in my life, as Rohit Kant, one of the best Indian designers in customising merchandise had put up a stall in our college. I loved the artwork of his, his perspectives and his designs inspired me a lot that was my motivational factor to aim for more. Recently, I had put up my stall in my college for the first time and the response was really good, more than that I was happy to get such good comments from the designers of my college. It was a success. The feedback on my products had been great; people come again and ask for another pair to gift it to their love. I had the same instance to share, I got this order from a guy in my class and he wanted a pair of headphones on “cherry”, based on her girlfriends nick name. And he then he went all the way to Kota to gift her on her birthday. The girl got really excited and was happy to own them.

My shoes has been purchased abroad also by foreign nationals, students and friends. I experiment and customise the products, keeping my client’s expectations as the foundation, and I build further upon it, and only make them feel better and reassured about the quality and authenticity of my product. I use good quality canvas shoes of converse. And I import all my colours from UK and other E u r o p e a n countries. The paints are durable and flexible enough to withstand pressures put upon them. The shoes a r e completely washable and use them as you want it, to flaunt or to play football. My message to fellow artist, don’t restrict yourself, explore in as many ways as you can, everyone has their own style of art, don’t leave what you’re good at and k e e p o n experimenting new techniques. This is only the beginning.

C..new laudia Ciesla girl in town!

I feel, is my home,

“ India Germany is just country!” Claudia Ciesla opens her heart. She keeps Chetna Pundir asking..

Being from Poland, how are your feelings in India. The Indian tradition, culture, mentality? My father is from Poland and my mom from Germany, so both the countries are actually my countries But yeah.. it was quite good experience for making a good journey, interesting journey, adventurous journey to come from Europe to India. In Germany, I was doing modeling and acting as well. It was always my line which I wanted to do, I wanted to join. My international movie named KARMA also released in India and after that I got the offer of being a part of Bigg Boss season 3, I keep it on. And that’s Bigg Boss helped me to step in Bollywood film industry, in Hindi film industry. I made friends in the Bigg Boss house, it was a very positive and good journey. And now I am very happy, living in India and I feel that India is my home, Germany is just country where I just go for holidays, I just go to meet my parents. But yeah we cannot plan everything in life, we have to flexible, whatever is happening around you have to take the best out of it and live your life. What I’m doing is that’s what ‘how I am living my life.’

24. JANUARY ISSUE

You started working at a very young age. What inspired you to step into the world of glamour at such a young age? That’s right. You know, first I did modeling when I was 15, that time I was so much clear that I want to become a model, that I want to be in front of the camera, that I want to be a part of a industry, modeling industry and all the stuff. I used to watch a lot of ramp walk like Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and all the stuff in TV. When I was actually a kid, I always took interest in clothes, bags, in modeling, how the models are walking and even going to school I was already walking like a model and practicing the style and all the stuff. My father is very disciplined and conservative guy. So, he said “Schooling and Studying is more important for you.” On the weekends, I was allowed to do the modeling stuff.

notes, very good marks, good grades and on weekend I was allowed to do modeling. I always good marks, I never had to struggle a lot to get good marks. That’s why my father allowed me to modeling and whatever I was passionate about. At 17, I started working professionally and somehow I managed to live my life according to my dreams. I was travelling a lot.. worldwide. I was doing acting & modeling in all over Europe not only in Germany.

How did you feel when you were titled Miss Matador (August 2005)? I was on many magazines covers in Europe. I won many contests also. It was always very good achievement for me. It was always something to be very proud of and whenever I could show any cover of the magazine to my mom & dad, they also felt like okay.. we supported our daughter in the right direction. Whatever Did your father support you? you are doing in life and you are Well, he supported me but he achieving something.. its a proud said, in case I am not studying feeling. I started as a model, to well, I am decreasing my stanbe on the cover was very impordards in the school he won’t allow tant for me that time, every ramp me to continue modeling at all. walk, every promotion of any So, I had to ensure very good company, any brand was so

amazing for me. When you are doing something which is difficult to achieve but, it gives very amazing pleasure when you get it. That was I felt. You also told in an interview that afetr modeling, you would become a Tax Consultant. Why didn’t you try in that field? Thanks to my dad. When I was 17, my dad still pressurized me you will never skip your school or studies and promising that I left my house. I was doing corresponding. So, I never had to go to school. I had to go just for my final exams. I studied Economics, I was very good with Maths. That’s why I wanted to become Tax Consultant. My father didn’t force me to study Economics. I opted the subject because of all. I found Maths the most easy for me. That’s why, I wanted to go for Economics. Maybe, I was thinking, that maybe one day, I would become Tax Consultant or something. You worked in ‘Karma’ as a lead actress. How did you like the character. Did you enjoy the character? Character which you’re playing in any movie doesn’t mean it resembles your style and it is not all like that we’ve to enjoy, we’ve to feel inside the character what you’re playing and give the best out of you can do. My character in Karma, It is basically about the Reincarnation, it is shooted in Ooty, South India. It was a kind of movie about the Reincarnation, how the one girl dies and takes birth again and again, people coming and haunting her and al the stuff. You’re connected with the NGO-KHUSHI, you were also awarded Karmaveer Puraskaar for social work. Tell us something about your experience as asocial activist?

28. JANUARY ISSUE

I always believe that you should keep helping other people whenever we get the power to do. And same way I’m supporting KHUSHI organization by almost 3 years. It’s a charity organization, based in Delhi. They’re planning to start another one in Mumbai this year or next year. They’re regularly active and I really feel it has to be done, for proper education, for proper food and all. So yeah, I’m always there to do charity and support the people. That’s the way I like that.

from them that how they are acting, how they behaving and much more in front of the camera.

Amitabh Bachchan Ji was the host of Bigg Boss season 3. Tell us about your rendezvous with him? It is amazing to enter the film industry in Bollywood, and to enter in reality show, and your first reality show is with legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan. It was so amazing that finally I am meeting him and I can talk to him. I’ve been very lucky because anything I’ve done right now it was all with the biggest stars of Bollywood like Amitabh Bachchan in Bogg Boss season 3, Shahrukh Khan in Zor Ka Jhatka and now with Akshay sir. I feel very very lucky and it was amazing because they’re so amazing, so experienced and you can learn so much

You said, “Bigg Boss is my Godfather.” How much is it true for your instant stardom in Bollywood? Bigg Boss ek both achha platform tha mere liye. Mere liye hamesha special rahega. Lekin uske baad maine boht kuchh kiya. Zor Ka Jhatka maine kiya. Actually mera pehla reality show Bigg Boss tha aur Amitabh ji ka main boht bada fan hun isliye boht – boht achha experience tha.

Also tell us about your experience in Bigg Boss house with your house mates. Who was closest to you? No. I didn’t have any enemy. Nor I could find as my hindi was not that strong. After Bigg Boss I learned hindi. For now, I’m comfortable to talk in hindi. That time I couldn’t. Never I was fighting or manipulating in Bigg Boss house as I couldn’t do that. In Zor Ka Jhatka-Total Wipeout with SRK, you were the runner up by 51 seconds. Was that a sad moment not being the winner? No. Not at all. I’m so proud because at the end of the day I had to compete with the guys. To

compete with the guys is just not an easy task for a girl. And I reached the finals. I was the only girl there. Six finalists were there and only one girl, that was me. I got the second place. We, all as women should be proud of it. And it was less than one minute that I lost it. But I’m still the winner. I’m definitely not sad. I’m really happy and proud of myself that I reached so far beating all those guys and losing by less than one minute. It was an amazing experience and feeling.

I hate people who try to get overdressed, it makes one feel uncomfortable. Always be comfortable and not overdressed. This is what I call my style and that is what I’m following. How do you you maintain a healthy sense of self esteem and positive body image? There is nothing like stress. Everbody has problems in life, but it is the way you take the things. HEALTH

Workout in Winters M any people who spend the bulk of the year happily jogging, and hiking outdoors begin to curb their activity at the first sign of frost. When the mercury starts to drop, so does our motivation to get up and get going. Unfortunately, it’s also at this chilly time of year that we instinctively want to pack in more calories, which makes sticking to an exercise plan even more critical. Creating a workout regime will keep us motivated, energized and physically active throughout the winters and to do so here we comes with some simple winter workouts to make winters fit and healthy and adventurous.

34. JANUARY ISSUE

WARM UP

Warm up and cool down. Cold weather constricts muscles, so you need to allow enough time for proper stretching to warm up muscles before you exercise. Cooling down with stretches helps keep you limber and flexible. For best results, hold leg, arm and calf stretches for 30 seconds each.

Skiing is a thrilling sport that can satiate anyone’s need for an adrenaline rush relying on slopes and a pair of skis. What’s more, skiing can benefit people of all ages, from around the age of four up to 104, and you can choose slopes to suit your SKIING skill level. And if you’re more into the lack of slopes or simply prefer gentle, little slopes, try cross-country skiing too. Cross-country skiing is the winter equivalent of riding a bike, as it gives your lower body a great workout, while the use of the poles gives your arm, back and chest muscles a good workout

No need to stop the previous walks just because it’s cold outside. Bundle up, find good walking routes, and keep you body fit with this gentle yet very effective exercise. JUST WALK

RUNNING If you’ve got the notion that winter running is not a happening thing, think again. There are plenty of winter running enthusiasts, often running in groups, and not demotivated by snowfall or rain. Dress for warmth, get a good pair of winter running shoes, and find yourself a local group to join for morale.

Snowshoeing is a cross between walking, hiking, & nature viewing for the winter season. It’s hard work, especially for a beginner but it gets easier with practice. Snowshoeing can change your entire relationship with winter, exercise SNOWSHOEING outside helps in alleviating common depression and replacing it with a healthy and wholesome alternative to visiting the gym.

Sneaky Ways to Eat Less 9 So what can you do to keep yourself from shoveling down food?

E

ating too fast is making your waistline expand, suggest two new studies presented at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society. Men who consider themselves fast eaters have significantly higher body mass indexes (BMIs) than slower eaters, one study found. Men also eat faster than women, downing 80 calories a minute compared to just 52 for the fairer sex. Researchers also found a connection turmoil and faster eating, says University of Rhode Island professor Kathleen Melanson, Ph.D. When you are emotional, you pay less attention to what you are eating than you would normally. You desire the satisfaction of tasting food, which may drive you to eat fast, Melanson explains. Eating fast doesn’t allow the nerve endings in your stomach — called stretch receptors —— time to recognize when the stomach is full. You then overeat, leading to weight gain, researchers say.

Relax before you eat. Being stressed will make you feel like you need to eat quicker, said Melanson. One solution: Remember a vacation or time when you felt particularly relaxed. This tricks your mind into remembering the sounds, tastes, and feelings of being distressed.

2

Use smaller utensils, especially smaller spoons or chopsticks. Those who do consume 70 less calories per meal, according to a University of Rhode Island at Kingston study.

3

Savor the first three bites. When you pay attention and analyze the texture and taste of food, you trick your mind into believing your stomach is fuller, says Jeffrey Greeson, Ph.D., a health psychologist at Duke Integrative Medicine.

4

Place your utensils in your non-dominant hand (if you are right handed put it in your left, and vice versa). You will be more deliberate with each bite, making it easier to enjoy your food.

5

Sip water between bites. You will stay hydrated, keeping you from confusing dehydration with hunger and slowing the bites you take.

6

Talk to others at dinner table. By expanding the conversation, you take longer between bites. Researchers at Flinders University found stimulating your mind keeps you from overindulging.

7

Add spice or hot sauce. Spice signals receptors in the brain and wakes it up to fact that you are eating, said Greeson. It will also make you pay attention to flavor and drink more water.

8

Avoid soda and other sweet drinks made with high fructose corn syrup. A University of California at San Francisco study found that the corn syrup blocks a key hormone that tells us when we are full.

9

Try black tea. A study in the Journal of American College of Nutrition found that black tea decreases blood sugar levels by 10 percent for 2 ½ hours so you’ll feel fuller faster and avoid hunger later on.

WAYS TO INSTANTLY TURN HIM ON.. ..without even touching him

THE WET, WILD LOOK This is easy. You may not have noticed it, but guys love your wet, just-cameout-of-the-bath look.. that time when you have the towel or a robe carelessly wrapped around your glistening body. Just stand at a spot where you are visible to him, and carelessly walk around him, running your fingers through your hair. And make sure you have sprayed some eau de cologne before you’ve stepped out of the bathroom.

THE CLEAVAGE TRICK

BOOTILICIOUS MOVES

The idea is to tease. Wear a camisole that exposes your cleavage to him. It doesn’t have to be too low. Just a cut that makes him look at you differently. Don’t the women all know that the cut of the camisole or bra makes your breast size seem bigger or smaller or at least different? Choose a camisole with a cut that you generally don’t wear and strut your stuff, woman. You’ll have a night like never before.

You and your partner have ordered a movie for a relaxed night in. but then your mood changes. You want to make hot, passionate love. Don’t fret. Don’t say it aloud either. It kind of kills the mood. All you need to do is get into the shortest of shorts you have and a wellfitted one. Pretend to just enjoy the film and roll over to your stomach. A glance at your hot booty with all that leg showing… the bedroom door’s going to be locked for a while.

Social openers for the first brush Unless you’re attractive or have more money than God, nature will unaplogically weed your genes out of existence if you lack the skills to attract and mate successfully. Deal with it. Of course, you shouldn’t just pick the best of the losers that present themselves. And you never know when and where you’re going to meet your soul mate. You need to have a few subtle openers ready if and when the situation arises. There are two kinds of social openers: direct and indirect. Always prefer indirect opener. An indirect opener can be as simple as ‘That’s an anteresting looking drink/book, what’s it called?’ Or the evergreen -‘Do you know where XYZ is.’ (Guys are physiologically programmed to help a damsel in distress.) Your sole goal is not to mate on the spot or become best friends immediately. It’s just to test the waters and get to know the person. Remember when you were a kid and would walk up to the closest kid and say something innocent like ‘You have a booger in your nose’ or ‘ You smell like my uncle’s cat’. You can’t do that anymore now that you’re a groewn-up but it’s still okay to be social. Now and then, every woman has been in a position where she meets a puppy dog man who follows her around. How do you extricate yourself from a guy you just met who’s sticking to you? You can depend on your girlfriends, to rescue you, find him another girl and pawn him off.’Now if you do meet a guy you want to get to know, how can you get him to ask you out? Ask any man what he’s looking for in a mate and he’ll probably rattle off a checklist of must-haves. But there’s one characteristic that’s in practically every

man’s top five: being adventurous (sexually and otherwise). If you show a man that you have this trait, he’ll climb mountains and fight fires to win you over. JANUARY ISSUE 67.

Riders

WHILE TALKING TO THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE, WE GOT TO KNOW WHAT REALLY THEY ARE..

Tell about your band? (Include all band members and instruments played.) All of us have a similar vision for the band and that’s what holds us together. I met Nishant and Abhishek in the first year of college and decided to work together. After many lineup changes, Siddharth (Abhishek’s elder brother) decided to take over bass duties for the band. The line up was finally complete when Keith joined us as drummer in September 2011. It was after finally having found stability in the lineup, our music changed from an alternative rock sound to a more progressive one. We’re always discovering new aspects of our music as we grow as a band. Why did you pick your band’s name ‘The uncertainty Principle’. Why did you decide to play the genre you do? “The Uncertainty Principle” is actually a theory of Quantum Mechanics which states that position and velocity of a particle cannot be known together at a particular instant. Initially, the name was suggested by a friend, and we decided to adopt the name. As we continued playing music, the reason the name stuck is because our interpretation of it.

We take this concept in a completely different sense, in the context of our journey through life. We believe that it is impossible to know our exact “position” and “velocity” in the context of our eventual purpose in this world. In a way, the uncertainty of our musical journey could be in an example of this since our sound has evolved over the years. Our first song, “Through my Eyes” has changed so much from it initially sounded like, something we couldn’t have imagined when we originally made them it. Our songs are characterized by notso-conventional structures and time signatures. Each song is like a story, and you don’t necessarily know which way its going to go. So whether our music is influenced by our name, or the other way around, we let the listeners decide, but whether or not they think there is any connection, the biggest thing for us is for people to listen to our music and enjoy it, and perhaps relate to it and to us. Who are your musical influences and why? We are influenced by several Progressive and Alternative Rock bands. Our biggest influences would have to be bands like Tool and Karnivool.

How you got your first lucky break? Our big break came at Blitzkrieg, IIT Delhi, 2011, where we won Best Band, as well as Best Guitarist, Vocalist and Bassist. That was just the boost we needed, and it helped us get a lot of confidence and belief in ourselves. We felt like we were finally making music and putting on shows that people really enjoyed. What inspires you to do that you are doing? For all of us, music is the biggest passion. So I guess you can say that this love for music is what inspires us the most. We want to make music that is original, and we focus on making each song an experience, both to play and to listen to. How does the music affects you and people around you? Music is a big part of all of our lives. Whether its playing music, listening to it, or going to watch other bands play. So in that sense, we have a constant dose of music in our lives and it has a big part to play in what we do. Watching and meeting other musicians is also another great experience which comes with being involved in the music scene.

JANUARY ISSUE 69.

Give some views on commercialization in India? The music scene in the country is something that draws a lot of different opinions from people. From our point of view, there are positives and negatives, and at times it is frustrating trying to break through and get our music out and develop a fan base. At the end of the day, we love making music and we love playing gigs, and we keep our focus on that aspect. We know there are several challenges, but we do our best to let our music do the job.

70. JANUARY ISSUE

What changes would you like to make in Indian music industry? There are many challenges in the industry, and there is no answer as such to these problems. The festival culture is something that we would love to have more of. Some of the festivals are really well organized, and having more exposure for upcoming bands at these events would be a big boost. Tell us a story about a day in your life? It’s hard to pick out a story about one particular day, as we

have had many experiences while playing gigs and competitions. There was one time where we were playing a competition and Delhi College of Engineering, in Rohini. We were supposed to reach the venue at 4 pm, and we were following the GPS on our phones in an effort to reach there. Somewhere along the way, we got lost and we ended up in parts of Delhi which we didn’t know existed. Eventually, we had to park our car at a railway station, cross a bridge by foot, and take an auto, with all our equipment, and we managed to

reach just in time to get the last slot of the day. Luckily we ended up winning that competition! Which is your favourite track among all your new songs and why? Its hard to pick a favourite, but it would probably be ‘The Question’. This song epitomizes our style, and has its heavy riffs, melodic vocals, powerful drums and also the slower parts with more guitar effects. It’s a song that gets the crowd involved as well. What is the best and worst thing about playing in clubs? The best thing would have to be the opportunity to spread our music to new people, and to play alongside other musicians. And of course we don’t mind the odd free meal. The worst thing would be the fact that quite often at a club, the audience comprises your friends for the most part. While we love our friends coming to our gigs, the biggest compliment is to get appreciation from new listeners, or people who don’t know you but like your music. Your all songs describes your lyrics style. Do you agree?

Our lyrics often tell a story, like our music. We often write about things related to life and its experiences, and the uncertainty of it. Our lyrical themes too are always developing.

adding elements of these bands to our own style. Perhaps our newer songs are slightly more heavy, while also having slower or lighter parts. The time signatures keep changing, and we try making it more diverse.

Where do you usually gather for song writing? What’s your song writing process? Our song writing process starts with the guitar. Our lead guitarist, Abhishek, comes up with riffs for a song and then sends the rest of us the video so that we can get accustomed to the song before actually jamming. Once we take it to the jam room, we work on getting our parts individually to get together, and then we mess around with the structure and make changes where needed. The vocal melody and lyrics are also worked on while we jam.

What was your most embarrasing experience? This is a tough one to answer. I guess we could say it was this once when we were playing a gig, and not even midway through our second song, the sound was cut and we continued to play the song without knowing what had happened. Eventually we were on stage for at least ten minutes doing nothing, before the sound came back on.

How do the new song differs from the older ones? We keep trying to evolve our style, taking influences from different bands and

Tell about your future plans and upcoming events? We are going to start working on an album very soon, now that we’ve got a decent number of songs written. The main aim we have is to spread our music and develop our fan base. We will be playing at Zorba as a part of this event called “Re-Rock” along with some other bands.

thank you! JANUARY ISSUE 71.

Protocol rules being ‘LIVE’ Tell about your band? (Include all band members and instruments played.) Our band name is protocol. Our genre is experimental rock. We came up with this name because we really think there are certain rules to life and hardwork is required no matter what. We are a five piece band. Like most of the bands, we have a simple line up. I, Swati Verma am the lead vocalist for the band. Our lead guitarist is Deskan Gopalan who is a great player with all the innovative and creative stuff. Our rhythm guitarist is Sandesh Rao. Our bassist is Anant Singh Dhanoa. Our drummer is Sujit Chavan. He is the mr. funny bone in the band and keeps it all cheerful and inspirational! How it all started? I mean, how you get the idea for creating the band? Well, we all were simultaneously looking to form a good band that can go long way with all the dedicated and talented members. Desikan, Sujit, Sandesh and Anant were friends earlier and used to jam frequently and later I met them on facebook (thanks to the huge great musician network it becomes really easy to search for mutual contacts). I went to jam with them as they were looking for a vocalist and then things started to fall in place. I liked their work, they liked the way I worked. And since then

we are working together as a team with our best intentions of making great music! Do the people back at home support you guys? Well, of course they do support us for what we do. Initially, there were issues related to the time we spent but as and when we grew as a band, the importance of the band was acknowledged. They really support us for this. Thanks to our parents for being so supportive. How does it feel to be professionally in a band? It feels really great. I mean how many out there get to be in a good band with all the dedicated and talented members? And its just not that, also the mutual bonding and understanding between the members is really important. Being in a band teaches you every aspect of being professionally into a field. Really, it teaches you a LOT! If you guys were to describe yourself in simple word choice.. what would you say? HARDWORKING We really work hard like most of the bands aiming for huge success do! And its all about the correct approach to things. Do any of you guys have a girlfriend/boyfriend? (I don’t know how well this one would turn out…) Haha, well on a serious note I

know this will be really hard for you to digest but as far as I know none of the band members has a girlfriend/ boyfriend including me! Sad, I know! But its just like this haha! Do you guys have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music? Well ya! I love gaming. I own a psp and a ps3. I also love to design websites, banners, logo etc for companies / bands / people. Our drummer as well loves to design logo and is good with designing! Sandesh and Deskan love soccer. Haha guys! Who are your musical influences? Within Temptation, Evanescence, Lamb of God, Periphery, Tesseract, Life on Repeat, Porcupine Tree, Iron Maiden. What is your music background? (Tell in short) Do any band members belong to the Musician’s Union? Well all of us are into music since we were kids. We do have our contacts with all the great musicians. We make sure we gain enough guidance from them. Sandesh have done certified sound engineering course. Deskan learnt carnatic music for 10 years and learnt flute for a year. I have completed my grade 7 for vocals from Trinity University of London. I have also been

playing guitar since 2 years. Have you released any music yet. If no, then Why do you want to record and release your own music? (Be very honest) Like all the ambitious musicians, we play what we like and we want the world to acknowledge us, our talent, our creativity and we really want the world to know our music. We want people to acknowledge us as PROTOCOL. We create our own good music. We want to make our family proud, our country proud! We have our songs ready and are recording them. In the process of releasing an album soon. :) What are your songs about? (What specific themes do you cover) Ours is an experimental band. We usually experiment on situations, various issues! Its never the same theme! We like to give it a different theme every time with the same PROTOCOL touch to it. :D We never stick to a theme, so I guess in our upcoming EP you can find love songs as well as powerful tracks which carry a meaning! Hehe For eg: our latest song HOME is about women empowerment. You write your own songs? (the songwriting process) Yes, we sit together and write our own songs. :) How do you describe your music to people? Well our music is different for different personalities. We really can’t generalize it. Technically it is progressive and experimental.

PROTOCOL - LIVE What image do you think your music conveys? (Do not avoid the image issue!) I guess we want people to experiment with their music. Our music conveys power and peace. What are your immediate music career goals? For now, do gigs, plan for an EP and to play as many gigs as we can to be able to go that far! Do you have any personal contacts in the music business? No, we don’t have many contacts as such and we are prepared for the tough road ahead. Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal? Anything is fine as long as people get to listen to our music frequently. We accept all surprises.. hehe

What live performance experience have you had? We have taken it a little slow and paying a lot of attention to the sound and our compositions so we haven’t done a gig far but we will be headlining in a college soon. How do you rate your live performance ability? We have hit the studio before we have done a gig so I guess that’s a little startling question we can only answer that question after we go live too many times! How would you define the word ‘success’? For us success would be people recognizing us with our band’s name. if there are other bands that follow or have you in their list of influences, that is success for us!

thank you!

DRIVING SUPPORT Care-Free Driving. One of the most pleasing things about the all-new Volvo S60 is how care-free you’ll feel driving a car so packed with innovative driving support features. So all you have to worry about is enjoying the ride.

Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrain Detection Statistics show that in 50% of the rear end collisions the driver at fault doesn’t brake at all. Active at all speeds above 4 km/h, this thirdgeneration collision avoidance technology can warn you if you’re too close to a vehicle in front or if there are pedestrians in your path. If you don’t react and a collision is imminent, full autobraking is engaged to help you avoid or mitigate an impact. Within a range of 150 metres, a radar sensor behind the grille and a digital camera behind the windscreen continuously monitor the distance to the vehicle in front of you. During daylight at speeds up to 35 km/h it can also detect standing or moving pedestrians. If a pedestrian unexpectedly steps out in front of your car or if a vehicle suddenly brakes (or is stationary) and Collision Warning senses that a collision is likely to happen, it will alert you to act with a flashing red warning light on the windscreen along with an audible alarm. Moreover, this technology supports driverinitiated braking by pre-charging the brakes to quickly prepare for panic braking and help reduce the reaction time. If you don’t react to the warning and a collision is imminent, the car immediately brakes with full braking force. Driver Alert Control (DAC) Upto 90% of all traffic accidents are caused by driver distraction. Driver Alert Control is a unique technology that can help alert a

tired or distracted driver at speeds over 65 km/h. Using signals from a digital camera to monitor the road ahead along with data from steering wheel movements, DAC can compare erratic behaviour to your normal driving style. If DAC detects that your driving behaviour shows signs of drowsiness or distraction, y o u receive an audible warning. At the same time, a message is displayed on the instrument panel suggesting it might be time for a break. Volvo On Call Further adding to your convenience and security, the Volvo On Call telematics technology with built-in GPS and communication modem constantly connects your Volvo to the world, providing a range of personal services. A push of a button connects you instantly with a Volvo On Call operator who can pinpoint your location and send the assistance you need. And just using your mobile phone, smart applications allow you to remotely check the status of your car, lock and unlock the doors, locate your car and warm up the engine and cabin (if your car is equipped with a fuel heater). The system can also alert you to an attempted break-in, and if the car is stolen it can be traced via satellite and remotely immobilised. And in the case of

an accident where any of your car’s airbags is deployed, the Volve On Call centre is alerted automatically and will take immediate action. Self Supporting Tyres (SST) In the event of a puncture, Self Supporting Tyres allow you to keep moving for at least 80 km at max speed 80 km/h. At speeds from 30 km/h and upwards, the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System will alert you if the pressure in one or more of the tyres is too low. Since this type of tyre has a thicker wall to provide necessary support, ride comfort may differ compared to that of conventional tyres. SST requires Njord 17-inch aluminium wheels. Brake Energy Generation To further optimise fuel efficiency and performance in all driving conditions, all engines feature Volvo’s intelligent brake kinetic energy regeneration. As soon as you brake or release the accelerator while a gear is engaged, the alternator harnesses the car’s kinetic energy and feeds it into the battery to reduce fuel consumption by an extra 2-3%. And when you accelerate, the alternator decouples t o free the engine for maximum performance when you need it.
