Dane County Humane Society

Dear <<Primary Salutation>>, Your generous support of Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) gives dogs like Ash opportunities few other shelters can offer - a temporary home for as long as needed and care and training to help animals find loving homes more quickly. Two-year-old Shepherd mix Ash, formerly known as Bently, is one of many puppies and dogs that make the journey to DCHS from overcrowded shelters as part of our weekly dog transfer programs. Your gifts allow DCHS to give thousands of animals transferred in from other shelters, along with thousands of local pets, the second chances they deserve. They also give much needed relief to overpopulated shelters struggling to save more lives. All pets that arrive at DCHS find themselves at a shelter with an Adoption Guarantee. This guarantee means that every healthy or treatable animal that comes through the shelter doors can stay as long as it takes to find a loving home. For most dogs at DCHS, it only takes around nine days to find their new family. For Ash, however, it took more than 14 times as long. It was clear when Ash arrived at DCHS that he had a loving soul, but his life thus far had left him with few manners and uneasiness around men. For him, the core programs and services at DCHS did more than just provide him with medical care and a safe place to sleep. Programs like the Behavior Modification Program equipped him with the skills to overcome fears, relieve stress and learn better manners. Members of the Behavior Modification Team knew Ash’s high energy, penchant for jumping and getting mouthy were barriers for potential adopters. Trained staff and volunteers spent many hours positively reinforcing good behaviors and giving Ash a special outlet for his energy, like play dates with his best buddy Doug. - over -

Ash was learning more every day, but his anxiety grew as his stay at DCHS stretched on. To calm this anxiety, Ash began spending his days relaxing in the office of a DCHS staff member, where he could nap in soft beds and play with a mountain of toys. This home-like environment lowers stress levels and allows potential adopters to see a pup’s true nature. Ash’s true nature was sweet with a side of sassy, which is what caught David’s eye right away. “I was immediately drawn to Ash. He looked like trouble and his description didn’t try to cover that up. It was obvious that he had too much energy for his own good. So, going into meeting Ash, I already had it in my head that he would be a little crazy,” says David. David was no stranger to rescue dogs with a complicated past. Six years prior he had adopted Oso from DCHS, a high energy Australian Cattle Dog mix who was also fearful of men. “I immediately fell in love with Ash and felt that my life would be a lot better with him in it,” said David.

So, after a long 127 days at DCHS, Ash found himself heading to his forever home. Ash is now enjoying life with a loving family, especially his new brother Oso. “They have become very close and I could not for one second think of Oso without Ash,” says David. David is looking forward to starting puppy school with Ash and has no doubt that he will be a fast learner, just like he was at DCHS. You help DCHS be more than just a temporary shelter for animals like Ash. The core programs and services offered at the shelter heal the bodies and minds of animals in our care, allowing them to find loving homes more quickly. Thank you for your generous support of companion and wild animals in need. With gratitude,

Pam McCloud Smith Executive Director
