ALUMNAE WEEKEND 2018 Sisterhood Once I've met someone, THE YEARS cannot erase, THE MEMORY of a pleasant word or a FRIENDLY Artwork by Phoebe Mills ’18

ON BEHALF OF THE GPS BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE ALUMNAE OFFICE, we invite all of our ’3s and ’8s classes to the 2018 Alumnae Weekend celebration. Reunion represents a time to reminisce, reflect, and reconnect—all in the spirit of sisterhood. Your reunion is also a time to join with classmates to get more involved in GPS today. We hope that you will return to campus, reconnect with old friends, and make a few new ones while immersed in the current GPS experience. We rely on the leadership and support of each of you to ensure the ongoing success of GPS’s effort to inspire girls to lead lives of integrity and purpose—girls who will impact the world. In this registration brochure, you will learn about the exciting happenings planned for your reunion including a cocktail party on Friday at Founders House; the induction of Glen Vey, Isabel Bryan McCall ’69, and Jane Henegar as Faculty Emeriti; and the Alumnae Awards Luncheon on Saturday honoring a notable alumna from each reunion class. Register today and join us! We hope to see you in April 2018!

The dictionary might define sisterhood as “a bond between female siblings” or, in a broader stroke, as “a community of women linked by a common interest.” But at GPS, sisterhood takes on a deeper meaning. While girls here grow up together, much like siblings in the same household, they also form bonds that often last a lifetime. As alumnae, you understand and appreciate the friendships you made here and likely have referred to classmates as your sisters. So when you reunite this weekend, our hope is you rekindle those bonds and stay in touch with your GPS sisters until you meet again. Here’s to the sisterhood!

The 2018 Distinguished Alumna and the Lupton Award of Excellence recipients will be chosen from the Notable Alumnae Awards honorees. Rising Notables will be recognized from the 10th and 5th reunion classes. Nominee selections are made using these overarching standards: • National recognition • Long and distinguished career or significant career achievement, philanthropy, or major volunteer contributions • Recipients must be living and may include active, former, and retired status. An alumna may be recognized more than once in her lifetime. ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Each year, GPS recognizes a select number of alumnae for their outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to athletics while at GPS and beyond. In keeping with the school’s tradition of athletic excellence, we induct into the Athletic Hall of Fame worthy alumnae role models who younger athletes may choose to emulate.

“Here’s to the girls of the GPS Here’s to the lessons, too Here’s to the ring we wear for her Here’s to the black and blue.”

Induction to honor retiring faculty Isabel Bryan McCall ’69 and Glen Vey, along with retired faculty member Jane Henegar, for their exemplary teaching, professional accomplishments, and service to GPS. All are invited to celebrate with us! ISABEL BRYAN MCCALL ’69 Isabel Bryan McCall returned to GPS to teach in 1988. A beloved member of the arts staff, McCall has taught art, ceramics, and sculpture classes for nearly 30 years. She worked on several interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Japanese Tea Ceremony and the environmental science and ceramic classes. McCall sponsored the Investment, Art, and Art Honor Society Clubs during her tenure and has exhibited her work in several cities including Chattanooga and Chicago. She has received honors from Public Art Chattanooga and the Lyndhurst Foundation.

GLEN VEY After a brief career as an attorney in Rossville, Georgia, Glen Vey came to GPS 30 years ago. He started teaching seventh-grade civics and American studies before moving to the Upper School, where he taught a variety of world history courses. After receiving the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award in 2006, he returned to the Middle School to finish his career with his favorite subject, ancient civilizations. Vey has coached several sports throughout the years and served as advisor of the Honor Council and the highly successful Model United Nations program.

JANE HENEGAR Jane Henegar started GPS in 1982 with daughter Emily ’88, retiring in 2012. She taught Hebrew scriptures and New Testament and sometimes global issues. Henegar was the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award recipient in 1991 and won the Hubert Smothers Award from the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools in 2010. Colleague Sara Gahan edited a book of Henegar’s GPS prayers, “Praying Life.” She believes there is “nobody like a GPS girl, no place like a GPS classroom, and no finer teachers than Isabel McCall and Glen Vey.”
