Valencia leads the way in tourism employment

by Keith Nicol THE MINISTER of Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment, Maximum Buch, stated that “three out of four jobs created in Spain within tourism in the past year have occurred in Valencia, where they have created 46,617 new jobs.”

Valencia led the way when it came to job creation in the tourism sector, according to EPA data for the first quarter of 2014, an increase of 26.4% compared to an average increase of 3.1% throughout Spain. Buch made these remarks during a visit to the May Fair in Torrevieja, where he was accompanied by the town’s mayor, Eduardo Dolon.

The Minister said that municipalities like Torrevieja is an excellent example of combining a large tourist and service offering that over the last year has led to a “raise in employment, lower unemployment Torrevieja’s and increased hiring.”

May Unemployment has fallen in Torrevieja over the last year by 6.8%, Fair was seven percentage points more than the average decline of Spain. In the highlighted past year, 720 citizens of Torrevieja are no longer unemployed. by the Continued on page 8 Minister

Another drowning in Torrevieja

THE BODY of a 53 year old man, of Belgian origin, was found floating in the water off the coast of Torrevieja on Monday. The body was spotted floating about fifty metres off shore from Acequión beach. A canoeist made the discovery and contacted local authorities. Guardia Civil said that the body did not show any external signs of violence and that drowning was expected to be the cause of death, but this could not be confirmed until after an autopsy had been carried out. The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation to determine the cause of death.

Government “targeted” Ark pensions

by Jack Troughton THE DISASTER of a pension unlocking scheme was triggered by the authorities making “an example” of a company allowing investors early access to their pension pots.

People who transferred existing pensions into Ark Business Consulting were promised a “no risk” and tax free scheme which allowed them to draw down half of their private pension value through a system of loans.

However, since a High Court Judge ruled the scheme unlawful in 2011, the investors are said to be “emotionally and financially crippled” as they are hounded to repay the cash advances and face huge tax bills.

The Ark Pensions Class Action representing 486 victims in the UK and Spain and sources close the design and marketing of the Ark in Britain agreed this week that the state had made an example of Ark – sending a warning shot across the bows of other similar schemes promising pension liberation before the minimum age of 55.

RTN was told the Pension Regulator, its appointment of new trustees Dalriada, and HM Revenue and Customs, had subjected the scheme to “a monumental stitch up” to make an example of Ark. And Angie Brooks, who heads the class action group, said there were other companies offering people early access to pensions. “The authorities made an example of Ark. It was

splashed all over the press and internet – the government made an example of it.”

Ark ran six pension schemes and allowed a member half their pot by making reciprocal loans of equal value between the companies, the remainder to be invested - a system known as Maximising Pension Value Arrangements (MPVA) or Pension Reciprocation Payments (PRP).

POWER Mr Justice Bean described the loans as “unauthorised payments” and “beyond the scope of the powers” of the trustees, and a “fraud on the power of investment”.

He explained the “time-honoured” phrase was misleading to the layman but did not mean dishonesty but a financial entity acting beyond its powers.

And he said of Ark: “The MPVA loans were beyond the scope of their powers, and made for an ulterior purpose. The fact that everyone involved in the transactions wished to validate MPVA loans does not prevent the loans from being a fraud on the trustees’ powers.”

The Ark source, who asked not to be named, maintained that based on “counsel’s opinion”, the loans were lawful and “were not unauthorised payments” but exploiting loopholes in current legislation.

He said the architect of the Ark system was convinced, backed by legal opinion; it was “absolutely legal, pukka, above board and worked.”

“

Mr Justice Bean described the loans as “unauthorised payments” and “beyond the scope of the powers” of the trustees, and a “fraud on the power of investment”.

And RTN was told such was the publicity given to Ark, the independent Pension Regulator spurred into action and appointed Dalriada Trustees to recover loans, claw back Ark investments, and run the pension scheme.

The source attacked Dalriada’s handling of investors’ money . “The extraction of fees is doing more damage than anything – that’s the terrifying part, it’s unbelievable.

PROTECT “It is also unbelievable that as trustees, the money they hold in banks as cash – which represents millions of pounds – is not being invested and that’s not protecting members.”

He added: “The trustees appointed by the Regulator are working in cahoots with the Regulator and working in cahoots with the HMRC. “Anger should be rightly directed between Dalriada in the first instance and HMRC in the second.”

Angie Brooks believes the “disaster” has ruined almost 500 people’s lives leaving “normal people in pieces, some who cannot sleep, work or function.”

She said people selling financial advice had two compelling reasons for doing so – firstly, to make money in fees from their expertise.

“Secondly, you have to care about the interests of the people you represent – you have to care about their financial security.

Are they going to starve or have a home to live in? That’s the bottom line.”

Angie said the action group’s ‘mission’ was to give members “clarity, transparency, justice, and action to get their pensions back and be put into the position they should have been in before their original pensions were transferred to Ark or any other pension liberation scheme.”

Will Torrevieja become a cruise destination?

WITH ITS relatively deep-water harbour and a breakwater of more than 400 metres already in place, Torrevieja’s harbour has been attracting investor interest for a number of years.

Although both Cartagena and Alicante are within a two-hour cruise of Torrevieja, being placed in the middle of both maybe an advantage to the City of Salt. Torrevieja benefits from being 45 minutes drive from two International airports and in terms of shore excursions could easily run tours both north to Alicante and Benidorm areas and south to Cartagena, or inland to Orihuela city plus it’s within easy reach of the wine regions, chocolate factories, toy and shoe manufactures and many other destinations including nautical, entertainment and cultural opportunities. Thus Torrevieja is perfectly placed to attract investment for the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry, 2014 has seen bumper growth in Cruise Ship visits for Cartagena, and now that new ordinances are in place to allow the opening of shops, museums and Cultural attractions on Sundays and holidays, cruise lines have been returning to the historical naval city. More than 100 cruise ship calls are expected throughout 2014. During the second half of July, the city will welcome one of the largest cruise ships to ever visit this part of the Mediterranean, with the ‘Independence of the Seas’ from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line returning to the area with

an estimated 4,370 guests and more than 2,000 crew onboard.

Although incorrectly reported in other local newspapers and web sites, Alicante will not be receiving 35 cruise ships during 2015 but according to cruise travel specialists only 20. However, possibly this is because the new operator of the port, Costa Blanca Portuaria may have added a little ‘spin’ to their release leading to confusion over total number of cruise ship visits and not the number of different cruise ships themselves. On the plus side, this is a huge jump in interest in the Alicante Port as for 2014 only 8 ships seem to be visiting, accounting for a paltry 17 days in port.

Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon promoted a Cruise facility into his Manifesto for 2011 and is open to offers of investment. Representatives from THIP (Torrevieja Harbour International Project SL) have already met with the mayor and mapped out a basic plan for a cruise port. This is just one of their possible projects for tourism development in Torrevieja, with includes hotels, an active lifestyle retirement community and entertainment facilities and they are presently seeking investment from interested parties. Other parties have also been in talks about the prospects of new harbour projects Each ship arrival can bring a destination an estimated 30,000€ of revenue, helping to also change the attitudes of local government plus shopping, services and hostilely facilities, to open their doors and embrace the cruise passenger revenue stream, all of which help boost the economy of the region.

Airport extends Costa Coffee

MANAGEMENT AT Alicante-Elche Airport has announced that the Costa Coffee terrace on the airport’s departure road has been extended by 80m2 to accommodate a further 16 tables and 64 chairs, ready for the anticipated bumper summer trade.

The popular Costa Coffee brand was brought to the Costa Blanca airport in September last year and has proved a hit with departing holidaymakers.

Reliable witness to Carrasco shooting

by Jan Gamm AN EYE WITNESS account of the tragic murder of PP politician Isabel Carrasco on 12th May has confirmed that 55-year-old Maria Montserrat Gonzalez, her face covered with a blue scarf, carried out the shooting as her daughter, 35year-old Triana Monserrat Martinez, watched from the riverbank. The witness, a retired police officer, clearly saw the events unfold as he walked near the river with his wife, alleging that Carrasco was shot once in the back and fell, then shot twice more as she lay on the ground before the killer fled, passing

the murder weapon to her daughter, both leaving the scene “briskly but calmly” but shortly apprehended by police. Both suspects, along with a third woman allegedly suspected of aiding and abetting the crime, are being held in a Leon prison following the mother’s confession. The killing is alleged to be motivated by revenge. In 2011, the daughter’s temporary contract with the León provincial council ended and another candidate was selected as her replacement. In the labour dispute that followed, the council claimed to have mistakenly ‘overpaid’ Martinez by 12,000€ and demanded the return of Condolence the money. Montserrat hands over Cullera mayor gets his fingers burned with half a million in tax possible negligence charges

POPULAR SOPRANO Montserrat Caballé has returned half a million euros in tax to the Spanish treasury following accusations by state prosecutors in April that she failed to declare earnings from concerts in 2010. Magistrates interviewed the 81-year-old star at her Barcelona residence over allegations that she evaded the half million in tax. At first the opera diva denied the charges, telling the authorities to sing for their money, but later paid 300,000€ with the balance left outstanding. Following a further hearing on 9th May, the balance of 208,000€ has been handed over.

A PUBLIC Ministry inquiry could lead to the imputation of Cullera’s mayor, Ernesto Sanjuan with reference to the fire that caused significant damage to Cullera Castle on 26th April when fireworks from an organised display started a blaze. The firework display went ahead despite the presence of a Level 3 risk warning throughout the region. The mayor will be questioned on decisions made to hold the display on also why the firework celebrations continued even after the hillside went up in flames. The prosecutor has provided all the mayors of the province of Valencia with a decree to prevent disasters caused by negligence or lack of responsibility, reminding municipal authorities that shooting fireworks as part of organised activities does not exempt those responsible from liability.

By Keith Nicol ORIHUELA COSTA’S Scandinavian Academy was awarded with a Green Flag this week with their ‘Environment Certification’. On 15th May the Academy held a special event to celebrate their award that was attended by staff, parents and children from the Scandinavian Academy.

On hand to say a few words about local councillors backing such projects was C.L.A.R.O. Councillor, Bob Houliston, who has supported the Academy in obtaining the award and helping to spread the word throughout Orihuela and Orihuela Costa community of their success. A representative of the Parents Association of Orihuela Costa municipal schools also attended the ceremony with the objective of trying to arrange meetings and activities between the children of municipal schools and the Scandinavian Academy in order to promote integration on the coast and also raise environmental awareness.

The Nordic Council has been very proactive in promoting eco-schools as an instrument for achieving a sustainable environment in the Scandinavian and Baltic countries.

The award of the Green Flag recognises the environment achievements of the recipient schools with the Scandinavian Academy being one of the few to achive such a prestigious award. To obtain the award, schools must demonstrate activities in the field of energy saving, recycling and improvement of the open-air environment during a two year period.

The Orihuela Costa Scandinavian Academy has conscientiously followed this programme. Some months ago they inaugurated a rooftop garden constructed from entirely recycled material. Children of the school are also actively involved in serving the community and give up their free time to help remove litter from the local area.

UK gets voting lesson CANADA HAS given its citizens round the world the right to political representation in their homeland for life as British expats continue to fight for a voice.

by Jack Troughton In a situation that closely parallels the relationship between the two countries and their expatriates, Canada dropped its five year rule on voting after leaving for foreign shores – the UK, despite criticism, maintains a 15 year deadline.

A campaign to give Brits abroad a vote for life – supported

by EU Vice President Viviane Reding - has been given a fresh impute by the Canadian Government recognising the significance and interests of her expats.

Canada’s Supreme Court said the ban on voting rights after five years was “arbitrary and unreasonable” and underlined many Canadian expats “care deeply about their country”.

And veteran campaigner Harry Shindler MBE commented: “Great Britain that one prided itself that it taught the world democracy, and whose people died to defend that democracy, is now being given a lesson in what democracy really means.

“The giving back to Canadian expats their right to vote by their government cannot now be ignored by the UK government.

“It leaves our government sitting almost alone on the branch with Cyprus, Denmark, Ireland and Malta.”

The 93-year-old former soldier, who lives in Italy, added: “Britain’s one million plus expats in Europe call on our government to follow the lead of the Canadian government and give us our right to vote at the next general election in 2015.”

Margaret Hales MBE, who leads the campaign on the Costa Blanca, said she was “delighted” Canadians living abroad now enjoyed universal suffrage.

Teen under arrest for seditious Tweeting

A 19-YEAR-OLD Spanish man has been arrested for sending messages via Twitter that ‘justify’ last Monday’s murder of Spanish PP politician Isabel Carrasco. The messages read: “Put them in a row, or side by side, and give me an AK-47 and you’ll see how I get rid of these fascists.”

Also – “Damn that’s how you do it. Let’s kill all of them.” And: “Now we just need to kill Rajoy and Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría,” he allegedly Tweeted, listing other Spanish politicians. Spain’s Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, said on Tuesday that authorities would “crack down” on anyone posting such offensive content on social networks.

The sad statistics of eviction

IN 2013, a total of 49,700 families lost their homes to repossession according to The Bank of Spain – a worrying 11% more than in 2012. Of these, nearly 80% were the main residence of the evicted families. And more than 20,000 were evicted by judicial decision after reaching an agreement with the bank. Incidents of forcible evictions dropped by 57% from the previous year; the police called in to evict 346 families from their homes. Almost 18,000 homeowners vacated their properties voluntarily.

Spain’s PP Euro candidate begs forgiveness for sexist comment

by Jan Gamm MIGUEL ARIAS Cañete, Spain’s PP candidate for the European elections, finally caved in to pressure on Tuesday and apologised for his sexist comments directed at his Socialist opponent, the PSOE’s Elena Valenciano. During a TV debate he labelled Valenciano “a defenceless woman,” sparking a barrage of social network comment that branded him “chauvinistic,” “sexist” and even compared him to a ‘gorilla’

and a ‘caveman’. The incident then spiralled into a political and public insult-hurling bunfight between the two rival parties. Finally the influential Esperanza Aguirre indicated that “…an apology would be made,” leaving Cañete with no option than to say: “Anyone who knows me knows what I am like and that I have always valued people regardless of whether they are a man or a woman. My career shows that. But if I have offended anyone, of course I beg their forgiveness.” Nicely put!

Origin of the word ‘OK’ MARTIN VAN Buren, the eighth president of the USA, was born in the village of Kinderhook in the state of New York. Van Buren became a state representative of this district, later senator and finally president of The US for one term (1837-1841).

When he first arrived to the state legislature representing Kinderhook and its ‘country bumpkins’, his erudite city-slicker colleagues (from NYC, Syracuse, Buffalo, etc.) mocked and kidded him for his farm boy roots and upbringing, but soon he became not only a good politician (if such an animal exists!) but also earned a reputation as a ‘decent’ humanitarian, often visiting and consoling children in hospitals and performing numerous charitable deeds in general.

Owing to this reputation for warm-hearted kindness and decency, his colleagues began to refer to him affectionately as ‘Old Kinderhook’, and the nickname stuck forever. REGARDING THE tacky methods used by low-cost airlines to nibble that extra bit of cash from you, Mr Weston (issue761) should know that Ryanair is still the king at this!

For months now, they don’t allow you check-in your out-flight and return-flight at the same time unless you pay to choose a seat. They do this by reducing the check-in window for the return flight to seven days. (It doesn’t affect trips of less than seven days – at the moment!) Despicably, this means also that if you don’t pay to book a seat you may be separated from your partner or family members on the flight. This amounts to blackmail when you have children with you! It wouldn’t surprise one to think that travellers with the same surname are deliberately separated if they don’t pay the extra. Last time I travelled I swapped my (random) seat so a married couple could sit together for the flight!

Car hire reluctance I HAD a similar experience to Michael Holdsworth last year. I also went back to the UK, to attend a funeral in May 2013. When I phoned to book the hire car, I was quoted a price of about £165. I pointed out that the price advertised in the local free newspaper was £99.

I was then offered a car for £109, which I accepted. On returning the vehicle, the car was inspected by the security attendant who confirmed everything was okay but one month later when I received my statement, I was

charged an additional £50 plus £27 administration fee. I called the hire car company four times on a premium rate number, (at a cost of 35€) The damage was said to be a scratch on the front bumper. Although I pointed out the car had been inspected on returning the vehicle I was still charged the additional fee. I complained to my credit card company, who were unable to help. I would be very reluctant to hire another car in the future.

Last century direction!

REGARDING THE report on new penalties for driving offences: whilst one can understand that some motorists may drive carelessly at some time in the course of a journey, albeit unintentionally, the ability of the police force to prosecute a possible offender of a traffic infringement purely on their say so, without stopping, photographing or producing any ‘physical’ evidence is to say the least a very frightening and sinister development in the thinking of the present Spanish government. This type of accusation would be very difficult to plead innocence to, since it would be solely the word of the charged against that of a policeman. We all trust that policemen are diligent and above all honest in their duties. However, past court cases have proven otherwise. With the pressure put on police by higher officials to achieve targets, one could see a big increase in fines - justified or not.

With the imposition of the 720 tax disclosure recently one could well perceive that Spain is slowly being taken in a direction similar to that of Germany in the last century!

Post code gender violence THE CATALAN Justice Department rejected 63% of applications for protection from violence last year.

Effectively this means that you stand a better chance of receiving justice if you are being abused in Murcia than you might in the Catalan region! La Rioja rejected only 8% of applications – Murcia 14% and in Andalucia 37%.

‘Protection’ usually involves a person charged with gender violence wearing a GPS tracking device in the form of a bracelet. 3,000 of such bracelets are available – yet only 700 or so are in use.

Desperate stowaways

A PAIR of stowaways balanced precariously over the turning propellers of a ferry bound from Tangier to the Cadiz port of Tarifa in Southern Spain this week were apprehended by police as they attempted to enter the country illegally. Spanish police are becoming increasingly concerned by the high numbers of immigrants attempting to enter the country at serious risk to their own lives: this is the second such incident in only two weeks and more than 30 dangerous attempts have been made to slip into the country in engine cavities so far this year. The stowaways, aged 29 and 31, made the 20-mile journey from Tangier only inches from the deadly turning screws of the engine, perched on a narrow metal shelf. Border guards arrested them as they climbed off the ferry to go ashore.

eBay cyber-attack

ONLINE AUCTION and sales giant eBay advise that all members should change their passwords following a cyber-attack. The company said in a statement on Wednesday that a database containing encrypted passwords had been breached. The company confirmed that financial data, including credit card information, was stored separately and was safe. However, hackers were able to gain access to eBay employee log-ins, which in turn gave them access to encoded passwords. If you are an eBay user – change your password.

Munroe’s Rock Fest 2

ROCK AND Punk music fans are in for a treat next month as local Torrevieja Bar Munroe’s celebrate their 25th year entertaining and serving public with Rock Fest 2.

Following on their successful 20th birthday celebration, the June 14th event returns to the iconic Eras de la Sal, for a one night only performance.

First established back in 1989, Monroe’s has always been Torrevieja’s, if not the Costa Blanca’s greatest ‘Rock’ bar. Not a weekend has passed without something extraordinary happening within its doors and a great time had by all. Owner Neil said “The success of Monroe’s has been without a doubt thanks to its many regulars, of all nationalities, who over the years have rocked, partied or just relaxed over a cold beer and a game of pool, weekend after weekend in their favourite bar.”

Mixed in with their locals, Monroe’s has also been the place to be for Torrevieja’s coolest visitors and holidaymakers.

A busy end of the month in Torrevieja

AS THE end of May approaches and the new Summer Cultural Program beckons, there are still a few activities happening before the end of the month.

On Saturday May 24, the New Generation Choir have a Concert at 7pm in the Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen while across town in the Palacio de Musica with Derek Francis and Maureen Roberts at 8pm. The performance in the Municipal Theatre ‘Recordando a Nino Bravo, has been postponed until August, due to this being the final of the Champions League.

On Sunday, the Moonshiners classic and custom car event takes place at Lakeside San Luis from 11am while in the evening Coral Bella Torrevieja perform in the Palacio de Musica at 7pm while there is a special Mother’s Day concert in the Municipal Theatre from Union Musical Torrevejense On Wednesday 28th May there is a show for kids called ‘The Wonderful World of Oz’ at 10am in the Municipal Theatre and on Thursday the Municipal School of Painting open their Exhibition ‘Coral Reef’ in the Virgen del Carmen.

LAST SUNDAY for the first time two teams from the same club played against each other in an historic Cricket España League match: newly founded LMCC 3rd Team v LMCC 2nd XI. LMCC 3rds hoped for a winning performance from talented David Williams. However, a fine catch on the boundary by Akash Panchal sent him back to the pavilion with the score on 10. After this the Juniors and Seniors showed plenty of grit and determination but were finally bowled out for 124. they enjoyed the scenery, noticing immediately the difference in landscape, the cleanliness of the houses and gardens and the fact that the houses had no grilles - “rejas” - on the windows - no fear of burglars! They went through forests, meadows, small villages, meeting very friendly people. The hills were very steep with quite a bit of climbing to do and they were pleased when they arrived at the hostel at the end of the day to rest. Hostels or ‘Albergues’ are only for the use of pilgrims at a cost of a few euros per person with very basic facilities.

Lynda from Scotland, a golfer, walked up those hills as if she was born on them but Bernard and Janneke needed time to catch their breath several times before reaching the top. The first 3 days went well but then disaster struck. Good daily foot care did not prevent an “Easter Egg” size blister appearing on Janneke’s heel. Even worse, it burst during the day. Ouch!!!

Limping then created great pain in the Achilles tendon and the knee of the other leg. The walking/climbing went slower and Janneke began to feel very guilty about holding the others up. This was companionship. They were in it together and they would stay in it together. Never was she so happy when seeing her bed for the night and having a hot shower.

The route that last day normally would have taken four hours but it took them the whole day. Janneke was walking as slow as a turtle in such great pain that she was convinced that she burned off all sins from the past including the sins of her whole family. On arrival into Santiago, she was forced to stop while Bernard and Lynda would do the final stamping in the booklets, receive the certificate and organize Janneke’s as well. No, this was not to be. Every pilgrim has to be there in person to prove they have done the job. Recognising the pain and the effort, the staff at the cathedral allowed her to jump the queue to get the last registration done, including receiving the so much wanted certificate. They then went for some Spanish breakfast whilst waiting for the special Easter pilgrims’ service to begin at 12.00h in the Cathedral. The whole cathedral was completely filled with pilgrims and the atmosphere was serene and very peaceful. This was a special experience as well and they felt very proud about their achievement. All in all, they had done their walk for their charity, HELP Murcia Mar Menor. It had not been easy but all three of them agreed that it was well worth it.

First Dragon Boat Festival

PLENTY OF action is guaranteed on the waterfront around Cartagena this Sunday, May 25, in the inner harbour basin with the participation of twenty boats in the first Dragon Boat Festival. This is a fun race that is growing in popularity worldwide, and locally is led by those from San Pedro. Participants race specially prepared canoes whose vessels are decorated with a dragon head at the bow and a tail at the stern. The Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena, in collaboration with the city hall, hosts this the First Dragon Boat Festival that starts at 10am.A total of 20 teams from throughout the Region of Murcia are participating in this competition weekend for just 5€ entry.

The benefits of physical activity by

I RECENTLY joined Dr Henk Landa on Bay Radio for a very interesting and helpful discussion on the benefits of healthy exercise.

BEING of a particular age myself and a diabetic, I appreciate how important it is to keep fit, and the implications of not sitting on my derrière, which could have devastating effects on my future well-being and longevity. I therefore found the doctor’s information very clear, helpful and explicit, so for those who missed my programme, I want to share this with you, as I feel very strongly on the subject.

We all know how exercise can benefit us, but getting round to doing it every day is very hard. Regular exercise or physical activity helps many of the body’s systems function better, assisting in the fight against Heart Disease, Diabetes and even Cancer, plus keeping a host of other diseases at bay. It is also a key ingredient toward losing weight. How much exercise you need depends on your genes, your diet, how much muscle and fat you carry on your frame, how fit you are and your capacity for exercise. Consult a fitness instructor or a doctor before starting on an exercise regime.

Dr Landa’s information came from a study by the University of Harvard in America, yet to be fully completed, on how exercise is vital to your long term health from a very early age. If children do not exercise regularly the problems that can occur especially in later life are many and of every description - I wonder just how many people are really aware of this.

As I understand it the older we become, lack of exer-

cise increases the probability of serious illness, whilst exercise improves your chances of living a longer and healthier life. For example you will protect yourself from certain cancers, whilst helping to prevent type 2 Diabetes and osteoporosis. It can relieve depression, anxiety, and your mood will automatically change for the better. Obviously your sleep pattern will improve, not forgetting the advantages of remaining supple which is an absolute joy - and improvement to your balance, which of course can be very dangerous as a fall could be fatal.

I myself have benefitted from doing regular exercise, although I need to do more, and can personally tell you that my balance is 100% improved in a very short space of time. You will notice the benefits of starting an exercise regime in a few short weeks, whilst a sedentary lifestyle does the complete opposite: it increases the chances of becoming overweight and developing a number of chronic diseases. Despite this, there are approximately only 30% of adults in America following any of these guidelines. What does that say about us?

WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISE I HEAR YOU ASK? Moderate activity that causes an increase in heart rate: walking every day as briskly as possible; riding a bicycle; swimming; tennis; dancing… all made so much easier in a country with such a glorious climate.

The doctor did not recommend that you immediately

join a gym where of course the weights improve your muscles, unless you have already built up a certain level of fitness.

For those more interested in a structured form of exercise there are Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi, which of course have an added benefit in bringing calm into your life, also bringing you into contact with some interesting like-minded souls. Remember to start slow and increase as your fitness grows.

The bottom line is: move more and sit less… I wish you the best of luck.

PS: Regular exercising does not give you permission to eat and drink as much as you want. You may wish to take this opportunity to look at what you are eating to see if you can cut out some of the ‘nasties’.

Court victory for British couple that made off-plan payments without bank guarantees THE LAW firm Fuster & Associates has won an important case representing a British couple, Mr & Mrs Burns, against the bank BMN (Banco Mare Nostrum). BMN was one of the banks involved in the developments built by the property developer Huma, that were sold without the provision of bank guarantees.

by Fuster & Associates Mr & Mrs Burns had made off-plan stage payments to the developer Huma but BMN had not issued the legally required bank guarantees to the couple meaning that their money was not returned when the developer failed to fulfill its contractual obligations. The bank acquiesced to the couple’s demands after it became apparent that their position was untenable and the money that was owed plus interest and legal fees was repaid in full.

Bank guarantees have been big news over the last few years as numerous Spanish property developers have gone bust leaving thousands of buyers owed tens of thousands of Euros that they’d already paid in off-plan deposits and stage payments. Many of them believed, and some still do, that it would be impossible to get this money back. However, if these payments had been made without the bank issuing guarantees then it is possible to take legal action against the

banks and - as this case has shown - to win.

José Ignacio Sánchez, the lawyer who represented Mr & Mrs Burns in the case, remarked afterwards: “it was essential to get justice for our clients and we have achieved it, but there are many others who are still owed money. We urge anyone owed money in off-plan payments they made without bank guarantees to get in touch so that we can win them back their money.”

It goes without saying that the couple were delighted with the successful outcome of the case and Mr Burns was quick to offer his thanks on behalf of himself and his wife to the law firm and in particular José Ignacio. “To say that we had very little hope of success is an understatement” said Mr Burns, “but thanks to the tenacity and prowess of the Fuster & Associates team, and the perseverance and ability of José Ignacio, we have enjoyed a successful outcome for which we offer our heartfelt thanks.”

The case provides further evidence that the courts are

prepared to hold banks responsible for the part they played in leaving so many foreign buyers thousands of Euros out of pocket. GAC Pindar supports Volvo Ocean Race FIVE VOLVO Ocean Race 201415 boats have already covered around 30,000 nautical miles in their pre-event preparations, giving both teams and event organisers the opportunity to test equipment and crews on land and sea.

“We’re delighted with how our new one-design boat, the Volvo Ocean 65, is shaping up, with all the crews reporting back to us positively on their progress so far,” said the event’s Race Director Jack Lloyd.

The trips have put the Volvo Ocean Race’s Official logistics partner, GAC Pindar to the test, assisting all teams with their global transport challenges. Lou Newlands of the Dongfeng Race Team said: “We are delighted to have the expert support of GAC Pindar in the build-up to and during the Volvo Ocean Race. Plans can change at a moment’s notice and GAC Pindar has always responded effectively under tight deadlines. We look forward to working with them more closely as the race gets underway.”

Dreams are made by cycling to England A COUPLE of Pensioners are off on the trip of a lifetime. On 31st May, two men are embarking on an epic 21-day cycle ride from Murcia to Stroud and raising money for two great causes along the way.

by Keith Nicol Over the three weeks their trip will take them from Murcia to Alicante, Benidorm, Gandia, Valencia, Tortosa, Pamplona, Hendaye and into France at Bayonne to Mimizan, Royan, La Rochelle, Montagen ur Sevre and Caen. They get to enjoy a cruise on a ferry crossing to Portsmouth before the last leg of their trip, taking them to Stroud, to finish on or around 20th or 21st June.

Since moving to Spain in 2004, and retiring in 2006, Keith, who is now 67, has had a long held dream to cycle from Spain back to the UK. Keith has been an avid cyclist for several years and has previously cycled from the Spanish Border to the UK, around France and also around Majorca, albeit this was now some 20plus years ago. When asked about the venture, Keith said “Whilst having a drink with my friend George (aged 70) one day at a local bar, the topic of conversation turned to this ‘idea’ and after a few beers had been drunk, George felt that he was also up for the challenge and the plan was born.”

Some essential padded shorts were bought, as they will be carrying all their own personal belong-

ings, a tent and sleeping bag each, plus all the necessary camping equipment.

Whilst this is very much a personal journey and a major achievement for both Keith and George, they both felt that it would be a wonderful opportunity to help raise funds to support their choKeith sen Charities. concert on Wednesday 11th June in Torrevieja Christian Fellowship Church in conjunction with the TCF Choir at 7pm, with all proceeds going to ‘Reachout’ to help the homeless and needy in the Torrevieja area.

The 140-member 4-part Curraghgower Singers are an amalgamation of two com-

munity choirs under the musical direction of the dynamic Timothy Schinnick.

by Patricia Thompson JILL SHEPPARD, owner of Sheppard’s Rest Camp Site in Dolores, was astonished to spot a small, very frightened pony in an appalling condition in a palm plantation on her way back from Alicante airport.

Jill and her friend Berice didn’t want to scare the pony further so rushed home and phoned the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre: half an hour later Sue Weeding and her husband Rod were on their way with a horse box.

Sue was shocked to find the pony with bale twine round her neck and front hooves to prevent escape. Dehydrated and malnourished, she would have suffered a terrible death within days, had she not been discovered. Rod and Sue took her back to the centre, where she has since received vital care and attention.

Sherrie, as she is now called, has settle into her new life in just a few short days and is now well on the road to recovery. She was soon joined by Ellie, an elderly pony found tethered in the campo without food or water. Ellie, named for the daughter of the lady who found

This year they have planned various special events, with the next one being staged on Saturday 31st May, with the main beneficiary being the Reach Out Torrevieja Charity for the homeless.

THE FEDERATION of Walkers &Mountain Climbers in the Valencian Community has approved a new route on the PuigCampana mountain range. The new route, along the North face has been given the route number PRCV 289.1 and follows an East West direction. The Department of Tourism in Finestrat have included the new route in all updated literature relating to the PuigCampana. The Council have also renewed all the signage along the route and refurbished the information boards at Font de Moli and La Fonteta.

Success for Adam and Lucy

LAST WEEKEND the Down Syndrome Swimming Federation held the European Championships at the Quays Swimming and Diving Complex, Southampton, on 10/11th May. More than 150 Down Syndrome athletes took part from eight different countries including Spain. Only four of the 12 Spanish swimmers could attend the Championships: Nacho from Elda;Loli from Murcia and Adam and Lucy from Orihuela Costa. The competition produced one World record and seven European records with 78 swimmers making qualifying times for the World Championships in November in Mexico.

Brother and Sister Adam and Lucy Stewart had a very successful weekend with nine medals and a placed ribbon between them.

Adam picked up four gold; two silver and one bronze as well as now holding the new European record for the 800 meters freestyle with a time of 13:04:88: Adam claimed personal bests in all his seven races.

Lucy developed a gastric virus the night before the competition but was determined

to swim and won two gold medals and a placed ribbon, again with personal bests.

Monday afternoon saw them back in the pool training for the ‘1st Masters Murcia Open Competition’ on Saturday 24th May, followed

by Adam and Lucy with the Masters Team in the Valencian Summer Regional Autonomico Competition held in the 50m home pool, Torrevieja, on 31st May and 1st June.

Adam and Lucy would like to thank coach Juanma for his hard work, Club NatacionTorrevieja Masters Team for their encouragement and Paula and Yuli for the gym workouts.

ROLAND DICKERBY is constantly in hot water at the health spa he runs along with wife Julia – a veritable madhouse which puts Bedlam to shame.

A modern day Billy Liar, Roland’s tall stories were central to the fun in ‘Kindly Keep It Covered’, a modern farce brought to life by Careline Theatre in Alcalali last week.

An effervescent Philip Anderson played the harassed hero – a man not exactly cut out for managing a health farm and constantly on the alert for the dragon, his mother-in-law Olivia.

Roland is a former insurance salesman who worked for Kindly Mutual – motto: ‘Kindly keep it covered’ - and sold a little piece of life insurance to Julia’s first husband Sidney...who promptly slipped his mortal coil.

Kindly Mutual kindly stumped up allowing Roland and Julia the cash to open Dickerby’s Health Spa, although it cost our hero his insurance career.

However, pandemonium ensued when up pops rogue Sidney in search of a key to the lucrative contents of a safe deposit box.

Dorothy Fish as Olivia, a downright snob, and Andy Headford-Lord as villainous Sydney were both able to go completely and enjoyably over the top.

Olivia all wide-eyed outrage (until she is nearly drowned by a stuffed camel – one of Roland’s mistaken auction buys) and Sydney quickly swapping from returned-from-thedead wideboy to French doctor, frequently

tending a dead body (actually a mannequin and another of Roland’s mistakes).

FRAUD Vanessa, wife of the Kindly Mutual boss, a meek and gentle Marian Carter began to smell a rat and believes there is not only a fraud but also various other bad guys at bay.

She gets thoroughly confused by Roland and Sidney and was finally convinced something in the water – guests must drink two litres a

day - has caused her hallucinations.

Candida Wright was long-suffering Julia.

A long-serving Careline actor she again hit the comedy nail on the head as the dutiful peacemaker... and Fairy Queen, the action is after all set on Midsummer Night.

Alan Gill played Hooper, the ever-hungry guest who first snaffles a tin of chocolate biscuits and in calorific terms at least, wins the lottery when he snaffles the police band, the entertainment for the spa’s Midsummer

Night’s Ball, refreshments – a picnic hamper stuffed with sarnies, doughnuts and beer.

Campbell, the copper investigating the theft of said hamper, patiently listened to allegations of wrongdoing before coming to the obvious conclusion – everyone at the spa was mad.

It was an entertaining night out with some hilarious moments in a play penned by Dave Freeman. However, it was also a shame there were not more bums on seats on first night to enjoy it.

Voices fill valley village MUSIC FILLED the streets of Benigembla when the choir Valley Voices performed a concert last Thursday evening at the Syndicato.

by Jack Troughton MUSIC FROM Films, classic show songs, fun numbers and popular hits were brought to life by the international choir of 30 singers.

And the singing was supported by individual performances from well-known cellist Paul Kears and piano accompanist Kirsty Glen, both adding to the party atmosphere.

Valley Voices enjoyed a standing ovation and performed an encore with a repeat of the Abba hit ‘Mamma Mia’. The choir’s co-leader Jennie Tollan said: “The success of this concert was achieved through the support of local people – the Mayor, the School and residents.”

The following night the choir was back in action performing at the Casa de Cultura in Benissa before a large audience.

The Lion King song Hakuna Matata proved to be great success with the audience.

Musical director Aileen Lightfoot said afterwards: “This was our best yet”, while Valley Voices second co-leader Joan Stock added: “All the effort was worthwhile. The audience enjoyed the show and the choir too.”

Proceeds from the first night were donated to La Penya Blanco School, Benigembla, and from the second performance to Friends of the Children of EMAUS.

By Jack Troughton DEMAND FOR tickets for Teulada Moraira Lions Club’s show ‘A Night of Magic’ prompted organisers to quickly arrange a matinee performance.

Both concerts featuring the El Divo Appreciation Tribute Band and Duo Intermezzo in Moraira sold out – raising more than 3,000€ for the charity.

Duo Intermezzo opened the show and enthralled with everything from classical Spanish guitar to songs from ‘Phantom’. The duo has been together for 11 years, as witnessed in the quality of the performance and the warmth and humour of the pair.

The El Divo tribute had to take to the stage without a customary sound check – the band lost its way and arrived late – but things were soon on an even keel as the three members unleashed their voices on a wide repertoire from Nessun Dorma to Delilah.

The money raised will swell the coffers of the Lions’ Charity Account and support its much-needed work in the area.

Duo intermezzo sold around 25 CDs on the night.

Unfortunately some contain Christmas songs by other artistes. Anyone in possession of an ‘errant’ recording can swap it for the real thing at the Lions’ Bookstall at Moraira Market on the first and third Friday of the month – and, starting this year, on the fifth Friday of May and November.

Bougainvilleas - Part Three

THE WINTER CUTBACK In January and February do your main annual pruning but first decide on the shape and size of the final plant that you wish to create. By careful pruning wonderful specimens can be produced.

Even if the plant is still in flower don’t be afraid to prune back hard. If you don’t you will have a very leggy and untidy plant for the next season or you may find that the weight of the bougainvillea will pull it off the wall causing considerable damage.

Decide which main branches you want to keep and cut off all the side shoots tightly along these branches. Again cut out any suckers that you missed during the summer months. Sometimes you can leave the odd sucker to grow on especially if you are trying to train your plant up over a higher terrace.

The purple variety really needs a tight cut back to keep its lovely compact shape. The reds, pinks and yellows etc. you may want to leave more trailing so cut slightly less off the side shoots. You will need to use your own judgement. Don’t panic if your plant is completely devoid of leaves when spring comes - they will quickly come back to life.

PRUNING OF YOUNG PLANTS If grown as a climber on a wall or up an old tree trunk, decide on the main branches to be trained up the wall or around the trunk and tie in well. Prune

as described above for mature plants and make sure you remove all suckers as they appear.

If you want to develop a standard or half standard bush remove all side branches on the main stem up to the desired trunk height and cut out the top of the main stem to stimulate a bush of side shoots. Trim top side branches to your desired shape annually and any straggly branches during the summer.

PROPAGATING Take cuttings from second year growth. Put each cutting in a small pot or sectioned 4cm seed tray with a good potting compost. Stand the pots or tray in a tray with some potting compost or special absorbent matting. This helps retain moisture and encourages root formation.

Place in a garden frame, greenhouse or in semi shaded corner of the garden. Keep moist at all times and feed weekly with a dilute liquid plant fertilizer. When roots appear at the base of the pot, replant into a pot twice the size. You will see hundreds of plants being propagated successfully in large hot houses at major garden centres. All you need is light, heat, water and fertilizer!

HMRC and the Pension Tax Grab

IT NOW appears that the UK tax office are doing all they can to stop Ex Pats moving their pensions out of the UK. LATEST SOUND bites are that from April 2015 Public Sector Pensioners will NOT be allowed to transfer their Pensions to QROPs. It has been a problem for the UK for a few years now because transfer values have been much higher than the norm due to Low Annuity rates over a long period of time, therefore making cash equivalent transfers attractive to the Ex Pat and thus losing out on large amounts of tax revenue.

The HMRC are also trying to prevent all company pension funds escaping the UK tax net by trying to prevent all transfers abroad.

If this is successful it will be a huge tax boost to the Inland Revenue coffers and couple this with the new rules allowing more of the pension pots to be realised quicker, the inland revenue windfall could be massive.

None of this really benefits the individual pension holder or retiree who could lose out in many ways by this narrowing of individual’s options. It would be my recommendation

that if you have a preserved or frozen pension pot in the UK then have a look at what your options are available now and do not leave looking at it until after April 2015 – huge financial benefits may be pulled away from under your nose. At least find out how this would affect you now.

What is the deadline to claim against the builder, architects, etc. regarding a structure and foundation problem?

I HAVE a property in Montepego with cracks and fissures problems. Although they were repaired, they have reopened. Recently, an expert has confirmed that it is a structural problem with the house foundations. After long discussions with the developer and builder, they say that since its two years since the cracks appeared without me reporting it to the architects and the insurance company, I cannot legally claim against them. Is that true ?

Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry. In principle, under Spanish Building Law ( LOE ), there are 3 warranty periods. Finishing defects must appear within the first year, the habitation, occupation and construction problems within 3 years, and 10 years for structural defects which must affect the stability of the building. These periods are counted from when the works were finished and legally received by the owners.

In the event of having a contractual relationship with the architects, builders, etc. . , for example if you are a self promoter who hires the services of the builder or architect directly, these deadlines and periods are different.

If your structural problems have appeared within 10 years, according to Article 18 of the LOE, you had 2 years from when the damage is occasioned to claim against those responsible. Therefore, it would seem that they are right in what they have said.

But, you must also know, that this differs in the event of continuing damage or a building pathology which is active, according to the different court orders from the Spanish Supreme Court, including the court order Number 95/2010 of 25th of February, “It is a settled doctrine from this Court that when in relation with continuing damage of successive and uninterrupted production , deadline to start the legal action can not start until the final outcome ... because it is understood that only then, the affected person is able to assess the

Therefore, if your foundation problem is not just a single problem due to one settlement of the construction, but it is an active and continuous structural problem causing property damage, such as cracks that reopen even after being repaired, the said deadline to start the legal action of 2 years should start not from the time when the first cracks appeared, but from the moment when it was possible for you or your technical experts to know and assess the nature of the problem, its harmful consequences, etc.

In any case, generally we advise in these files, that as soon as a construction problem appears, technical and specialized legal advice must be sought, all parties who took part in the building process and who could have some responsibility must be notified by registered letter, telegram or similar, as to the existence of the building defects.

Classic Car Rally THIS WEEKEND the European Classic Car Club “Los Antiguos� will be setting off from Alfaz del Pi on a seven day rally to Castilla La Mancha, covering approximately 1200 km.

For any car enthusiasts, tomorrow, Saturday 24th there will be around 70 classic cars on display outside the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi - the oldest car belonging to the club is a 1954 Kaiser Manhatten. The owners, coming from as far as Torrevieja and Valencia, will all meet at 11:00am to show off their pride and joy before setting off on a tour of the streets of Alfaz the heading down to Albir, where they will be stopping for lunch.

The rally will set off at 11:30am the following day, Sunday 25th and be officially started by the Mayor Vicente Arques, with 25 participants taking part. The first stop will be in Albacete and cover 220km and finish in Castilla La Mancha on Saturday.

INCREASING NUMBERS of readers are asking me to reveal once again my ways of achieving financial blessings.

Many people quite wrongly think that money and spiritualism can’t mix and yet they are really hand in hand.

We use cash as our way of settling debts and so it is not the money that is wrong, but the poor distribution of it is to blame. Whilst some have more money than they could ever need, others have no money at all; and most of us float around somewhere in the middle of this.

If you have ever been without money, for sure none comes, but money is greatly attracted to money and always will be.

Try keeping the highest note in your wallet, but agree not to spend it. You will find that although money does come and go you will never ever have to spend your big note. Money becomes a part of the law of attraction and it works…try it.

If another note of similar, or even higher value comes along save your previous note, by then you will have ceased to even count it in your wallet. Money flows in such a way.

enough coins of a few centimos and the odd euro to make a ring around the candle. On a Thursday, which is the weekly day for asking, place your candle on the plate and light it.

Place a small circle of the coins around the lit candle and ask that these few coins be blessed. Blow out the candle at 12.00 midnight, reserving the coins separately. You have from then 24 hours to place the blessed coins into the hand of someone who is begging: sadly they will not be difficult to find these days.

As you pass on the money ask that you too be blessed with the money you need to have. This action connects you to the Universal flow of money, and all who do connect can be sure that they are rewarded. Repeat the exercise whenever you need and wait to see what comes your way. Your reward may not be immediately a financial blessing, but you are working towards acceptance and generosity on a global level.

It is never wrong to ask for money if you need it. Ask for what you deserve and on receipt see that a few coins go back into the pot to help others. Be a part of finance and do not fear riches by any means, because you can use them to profit others in the scheme of financial security.

Let money start to work for you, it follows this instruction as law, very well.

Did he or didn’t he? … That is the Question!

I BROUGHT the Ginger Prince here a few weeks ago on the back of an apparent rock solid story that he and Cressida Bonas were a full on item and that grandma had been brought in to celebrate ‘horny Harry’ zipping up his flies.

Having said that, what I need to now do is take you back a week and to Memphis Tennessee where a friend of Harry’s called Guy Pelly was getting married to Holiday Inn heiress Lizzy Wilson, and we find not only H there but big bruv Wills as well, and they are both ‘flying solo’, minus their ladies. Proving that they truly are a couple of cool royals, the day before the nuptials the lads did what any ordinary geezers might do whilst in Tennessee, they visited Graceland … Super Cool!

Returning to the wedding, the story now goes, according to US Weekly that is, that Harry hooked up with a blonde socialite at the do, with the magazine printing ‘the girl comes from a wealthy family in Tennessee,’ before adding ‘Harry set to work to win the girl’s attention, even twerking with her on the dance floor at the Hunt and Polo Club’…where else? It might well now be a good idea to have a cooling drink as there’s more, and it’s well thingy!

After the party was over, and here the magazine adds the word ‘allegedly’, “Harry escorted his new female friend to the private home where he was staying, and she stayed overnight!” TILT! Then they added: “She’s been bragging about it to friends, but to Harry it was “just a hookup!” So that’s what it’s called now then is it! For me Harry is a top geezer, and I look forward to the continuing tales of the life and times of The Ginger Prince!

Top chefs prepare for the Ball

DO YOU think your culinary skills are as good as some of the local chefs? Can you make a killer muffin, cream cake, chocolate brownie or Apple Pie?

Then if you can prepare 25 portions of dessert for Manhattan Charity Ball, you could have your chance to show off your skills.

A number of top chefs are already signed up for this prestigious event, but the organisers are seeking a few more, as surprise additions to shake things up a little, as the judges will not know who created which dessert.

The Manhattan Ball takes place on Friday 30th May at La Finca Golf and Spa Resort. The event follows in the footsteps of The Fabulous Masquerade Ball held at La Herradura in Los Montisinos three years ago. Tickets are very limited and are priced at just 19€.

Now “the heat is on” because with just a week to go they would like a few more Chefs

with Flair to provide desserts for the guests and the “After Dinner Dessert Competition”.

The theme of the Ball is red and white and the event has been kindly sponsored by Moneycorp and Spanish Life Properties SL. The food will follow an American theme but the chefs have a completely free choice to decide what they prepare for dessert. Patricia F Creighton M.B.E. is the Lady Toastmaster and Chef Gordon Atkins from The Vestry will be on hand at the welcome reception with a surprise or two too. Magician Graeme Mycal will also have something up his sleeve.

La Siesta May Fayre

LA SIESTA Evangelical Church hold their annual May Fayre tomorrow, Saturday May 24th.

The Fayre is their main fundraiser for the Church with the fun event open to everyone and is open from 10am until 1pm. There are a variety of stalls including Bric-A-Brac, Tombola, Refreshments and the Church Brass Group will provide some light entertainment during the event. The church is located in La Siesta, which is off the Crevillente Road (CV905). Turn in at Casas Espana, turn left at the petrol station and right into Calle Granados. The church is on this road just opposite the Flamingo Aqua Park.

E-cigarettes: give up by swapping one habit for another IT’S OFFICIAL - e-cigarettes can help smokers give up their habit. A survey of 5,863 smokers in the UK revealed that ‘e-smokers’ found the use of e-ciggies 60% more effective than patches or gum. Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Changing from “you” to “he or she” sentences (part 2) In our last lesson we started to look at how we change verbs to refer to “he” or “she”, in other words to put them into the “third person singular” form.

Having established that in all verbs except one we do this by dropping the letter “s” from the end of second person singular (you) form, we can now go back once more to some previous verbs and see how this works in practice.

Let’s look at our original expressions of intention, obligation and need, for example.

Vas a – you are going to Va a – he or she is going to Puedes – you can Puede – he or she can Quieres – you want Quiere – he or she wants Prefieres – you prefer Prefiere – he or she prefers.

You can see clearly from these examples that all that is required is the dropping of the letter “s” to make this change from second to third person, and that is true of every single verb in Spanish in the present tense with only one exception, as I mentioned, which is the verb SER (to be). This is an irregular verb and changes from eres (you are) to es (he or she is).

I’m now going to state the obvious yet again, because sometimes it is the obvious that we don’t think about! When we are forming a sentence in the third person we are suddenly at liberty to name the subject of the sentence in a way we cannot do with the first and second person.

To explain what I mean in English, a first person sentence can only start with “I” and the second person sentence can only start with “you”. In Spanish, as we know, these words yo and tú are optional

extras. However, when we come to the third person, we can use “he” or “she” or many other possible subjects – my husband, your friend, the teacher, Mr. Smith, that man over there, the person who lives in that house, Mary, Bill, my cat – I think you’re getting the idea.

So, without further ado, let’s see what new sentences we can form – there are of course thousands of them!

Mi marido va a trabajar mañana.

Tu amiga puede pasar cuando quiere. (Here the verb pasar means “to call in”) El profesor quiere hablar con tu madre.

El señor Smith prefiere comer pescado.

Remember as well we can form our negatives and our questions from these very easily.

Mi marido no va a trabajar mañana.

Tu amiga no puede pasar cuando quiere. ¿El profesor quiere hablar con tu madre? ¿El señor Smith prefiere comer pescado?

Notice in particular the way we would translate these last two sentences. In English they would start with “Does” – “Does the teacher want to speak to your mother?” “Does Mr. Smith prefer to eat fish?” These words such as “do” and “does” when forming questions are called “auxiliary verbs” and only exist in English. In Spanish they are not needed. When we are forming simple closed (yes/no) question, we simply make a statement sound like a question with our voice and write it with the upside down question mark. In other words, it is as though we were saying: “The teacher wants to speak to your mother?” “Mr. Smith prefers to eat fish?” It is noticeable as well that some Spanish people speak English in this way, translating directly from their own language, which is actually a lot more straightforward anyway!

Spring Concert for the Cucaracha Club A FULLY fledged fund raising programme is now underway to cover the budget for the independent local film; ‘The Cucaracha Club’. Staring Hollywood actor Al Matthews, former Eastender’s star Tom Watt, who played Lofty in the series, and local actors such as Billie Anthony’Gaddess, the cameras are hoping to roll this Autumn.

Heading for Chicago TALENTED TEENAGERS of Footlights Youth Theatre are looking forward to a weekend workshop in Calpe centred on the hit musical ‘Chicago’.

Two of the show’s most memorable numbers – ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’ – will be studied and staged over the two days, together with some dialogue work.

Rachel Bingham, the founder of ‘West End on Demand’, will again provide the expert direction – returning to the Costa Blanca after last year’s successful weekend studying ‘Les Miserables’.

The workshop is being staged on Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June.

Places are restricted but there are a few vacancies for talented young non-members at 25€ each.

Footlights Youth Theatre, who scored a success with a version of West side Story earlier this year, are busy rehearsing for a summer cabaret. The free show will be staged at Calpe’s Casa de Cultura on Wednesday 2nd July and will include both Chicago routines.

AN AWESOME night of driving took place Saturday night at Velocity Racing Cartagena Oval race track. They welcomed back three old race faces: Mark Pope, Mark Sears from the UK and Frank Nóhring from Germany.

An exciting night for Popey (654) taking three wins and a 2nd and Mark Sears (354) taking a win, also celebrating in true style with a startling wheel spinning display.

The driving was exhilarating round the bends between the two friends and rivals.

In the 7th race of the night young rookie rod teenager Ethan Pope took the win from his Dad with great skill. (One to watch) In the Rookie Rods Class Newcomer Martin Whitehouse (Geeky) (72) took 2 seconds on his debut and Samantha York in her new car (669) got her first win of

the season with an exceptional drive.

The Grafter Graham Stannard (103) also had 2 wins of the night in the Lightning Rod class.

Elvis in car 68 had smashing time into a wall of tyres and then had to retire with mechanical trouble.

The final race (all drivers) saw some exciting drives as car 130 lost its steering, knocking out champion Caroline Capel (46) giving way to Popey once again.

Shame about teenage super star Rookie Rod Jaz Lawrence (982) having to pull out with a broken fuel pipe and also young Lightning Rod Ryan Smith with gear box trouble. Sure they’ll be back in winning style at the next meeting ‘Le Mans Start’ on the 31st May: Gate open at 6pm, racing starts at 7pm.

A Fun Day Out for Elche Children’s Care Home

The Rascals bring their new show to town

THE RASCALS return to Casa de Cultura, Guardamar on Thursday 29th May with their latest show; ‘The Best of Times is Now’. Their latest performance is a true Variety show with songs, dances and comedy routines that will leave you with that feel good feeling.

By Keith Nicol The first two performances took place last week in Los Montesinos and judging by the positive feedback from the audiences, it’s a show not to be missed. Not only will you have the chance to enjoy a good show but you’ll also be helping a very worthwhile cause: in this instance the Alzheimer’s Association.

2,400€ was raised last week, which went towards the purchase of a hospital bed for the use of social services in Los Montesinos, with the other recipient being Age Concern, who will buy new wheelchairs with their half of the proceeds.

THIS SUNDAY, Lo Crispin Residents Cultural Association are raising funds to take the children and careers from ‘The Children’s Care Home at Elche’ for a fun packed day out in October. They are raising money to give them a real treat by going on a day trip to Terra Mitica theme park, in Benidorm, complete with lunch and of course ice creams.

The Residents are holding a Village Fete on Sunday 25th May from 1.30pm until approximately 7pm. The fete will consist of a large number of side shows, craft stalls, live entertainment, bouncy castles, barbeques, a fully stocked bar. Also on display will be a number of vintage and prestigious cars belonging to the members of the Torrevieja Classic and Specialist Car Club.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy as the entertainment programme is extremely varied. Acts booked to appear include the legendary cowboy re-enactment group ‘The Pistoleros’ along with a country a western guitarist ‘Red Strokes’, solo artist Nick Barker plus a Blues Tribute Act, all hosted by their DJ for the afternoon ‘Martin Dean’, who will bringing along other celebrity acts.

The fete will take place on Lo Crispin Urbanisation which is situated just off the roundabout at junction 845 of the AP7 motorway, close to the Zoco market. Please come along and help us to give the children from the “Children’s Care Home at Elche” a day to remember.

Can´t decide on an OS

HELLO AUNTY: I am looking at replacing my laptop, but can’t decide on the OS. I currently run Windows 7 Ultimate, which I am very happy with.

However, most new machines come with Windows 8/8.1, which I have not experienced, but have read several uncomplimentary comments on.

Machines with Windows 7 are available, but are limited and more expensive. I have also seen advertisements for machines that have ‘Windows 8, downgraded to Windows 7’ – What’s all that about? Also, in light of Windows 8, do you know how long Windows 7 will be supported?

Aunty says: Windows 8 has both good points and some bad points. Most of the bad points come from the different look and interface it used. It was designed for ‘touch screen’ devices. The ‘Metro’ tiles, and ‘touch screen’ look is not liked by many, and the main complaint for W8 users. But, you can also run W8 with the traditional looking ‘desktop’. After using ‘Windows desktop’ for so long, Windows 8 ‘tiles’ does take some getting used to. Support for W7 has a few years yet: Windows XP - Service Pack 3 - End of extended support - April 8, 2014: Windows Vista - Service Pack 2 - End of extended support - April 11, 2017: Windows 7 - Service Pack 1 - End of extended support - January 14, 2020: Windows 8 - Windows 8.1 - End of extended support - January 10, 2023.

AGV Tune-Up update

DEAR AUNTY: I was reading issue 578 about removing AVG. I have both AVG free version and AVG Tune-up 2014. I am constantly advised there is an Update for AVG PC Tune-up available.

However, when I run the update it downloads but will not install saying I have ‘PC Tune-up 2011’. I deleted this sometime ago and it is not listed on my list of programs, unless of course it is still lurking in the background. If so, is there any way I can find this? I have looked on the help pages of AVG but cannot find a solution.

Aunty says: It looks like Tune up 2011 was not totally and successfully removed from your PC when you “deleted it sometime ago.” So perhaps you need to try these two options to see if you can remove 2011 and 2014...

AVG provide a ‘removal tool’ to help remove their programs just in case the automatic uninstallers do not work. They can be found at: http://www.avg.com/gb-en/utilities You just have to make sure you use the correct 32bit or 64bit version for your version of Windows. Failing that, ‘revouninstaller’ usually works where others fail. http://revo-uninstaller.en.softonic.com/

Microsoft scam HI AUNTY: Just read the letter and reply in a previous edition regarding the possible scam that starts with the phone call from ‘Microsoft’. I’m not a pro in computers but have a fair knowledge and often help others out.

I had to sort out a problem recently which started exactly as described. An elderly friend fell for the fairly plausible chat from the ‘consultant’. Next thing he knew was he was shown on his screen a long list of errors (fictitious of course), his computer was being controlled remotely. He was requested to make a payment to resolve this, he refused and then his system was locked with

a username & password (Crypto lock).

Fortunately with some assistance from a colleague much higher qualified within the industry, I was able to unlock the system and get him running.

The advice is: don’t give anyone access to your computer. Don’t click on links and attachments within emails unless you know exactly where they are from and you were expecting them. It is easy to fall into these traps and get caught and the scammers know it! Phil (San Luis)

Citroen Berlingo Multispace

DRIVING THE Citroen Berlingo Multispace reignites memories for me of 1977 – 1984 and the first leisure vehicle inspired by Range Rover - its similar, if taller than the Rancho. The Popemobile inspired design is not my typical choice of transport. However, it is a true multi-purpose vehicle ideal for taking my wife, her parents and our baby daughter on a family trip to London.

The sliding rear doors are easy to operate, great for car parks where there’s never enough room to open a normal car door properly – useful when strapping Harriett into her baby seat.

The boot makes light work of luggage and there

are plenty of cubby holes, with helpful overhead storage above the boot - see the video at testdrives.biz: the boot cover can be lifted from inside. There’s a high driving position. While at first the seats seem pretty comfortable, over a long journey they could be more supportive. The interior is spacious and snazzy and the dashboard is user-friendly and funky: copious amounts of glass ensure plenty of light and air.

The handbrake is a bit close to the driver’s seat for comfort but you get used to it. Its gutsy 1.6-litre, 90bhp diesel can cover over 600 miles with its 60 litre tank. The five-speed box is perfectly adequate but a sixth gear might further improve economy.

Rear passengers have roof mounted air vents and fan control and air conditioning creates a pleasant climate.

The Berlingo Multispace is surprisingly compact considering the room inside. A mammoth tailgate makes great shelter from the rain. However, the driver has to remember to leave space behind him in order to access the boot.

Driving - a little remote and cumbersome, with vision impeded by the centre pillar, so extra care is required when overtaking. No cruise control for motorway travelling; and if fifth gear is engaged at 30mph the vehicle shudders, resulting in a rattle from the dash.

Car expert Parkers say: “Spacious, practical and brimming with family-friendly features, the Berlingo Multispace is a five-seat people carrier for buyers on a budget. It sits between the cheaper Xsara Picasso and stylish C4 Picasso in the Citroen range but, unlike its predecessor, is no longer based on a van.

Instead it uses car underpinnings, is comfortable and surprisingly good to drive as a result.”

Similar to variants from both Fiat and Peugeot, also unconventionally styled, these vehicles are popular with families but the Citroen is particularly so due to its incredibly well-designed interior, keen price and strong economy.
