Boxer: Dave Haye

THE PRE-FIGHT hype between David Haye and Audley Harrison picked up pace this week and let’s hope that the all British heavyweight bout is as good as the chat. But, providing he wins, I still can’t see Haye signing up to fight one of the Klitschko brothers after discovering the type of contract they offer to potential challengers. As an example, you only have to look at what British fighter Derek Chisora had to agree to before signing to fight the IBF, IBO and WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko in December. Under the terms of the deal, should he prove victorious in Germany, Chisora will next have to fight Vitali Klitschko and should he beat him, then give Wladimir a re-match. One can only applaud Chisora both for his bravery and for taking such a once in a life opportunity but I can’t see Haye agreeing to such a one-sided deal. NICE FOR NOBBY Regular readers of this column will know that I am no great fan of Manchester United. However, the club went up in my estimation this week after forking out nearly £270,000 (or put another way, about 10 day’s wages for Wayne Rooney) for some important memorabilia put up for auction by Nobby Styles. The club, for whom Styles had an illustrious career, bought his World Cup and European Cup winners medals plus the blue shirt he wore against Benfica in the 1968 match and will display all three items in their museum. Great for Styles who has some serious cash in his bank account to aid his retirement and good for British football that such key pieces of history can be enjoyed by a new generation of supporters. ROONEY’S DEAL Still on United, I found it strange to read a number of respected columnists in the UK press this week arguing that keeping Wayne Rooney at the club was a victory for manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Remember, Rooney questioned United’s ambition, which must have hurt his coach, and also suggested that he was too good to play with a number of the current squad. His reward for such inflammatory comments was a new five year deal and £200,000 a week, double his old salary. If that’s a victory, I’d hate to be around when the club loses a contract negotiation. THE ASHES England’s cricketers have flown out to Australia with the intent of defending the Ashes. Now, I love the Aussies. I work for an Australian company from time to time and find their views on life and sport quite refreshing. However, one thing grates and it’s this. If they say they are going to win the series, that’s confidence. If I suggest that England will win, that’s arrogance. So, let me arrogantly predict that England will return to the UK with cricket’s ultimate prize courtesy of a 2–1 series victory. Hey cobber, stick that on the barbie and smoke it!

Our Handicap and Matchday Secretary, Terry Williams, organised a fund raising event in aid of Spinal Research. He chose this charity in support of his partners son-in-law George Eyles who was forced to retire from rugby through a spinal injury. Since then he has been raising money for Spinal Research and is endorsed and supported by Wasps Rugby Union Club. To date he has raised 30,000 pounds and intends to continue until he has reached his target figure of 50,000 pounds. The event took place at the Sportmans Bar in Quesada and was attended by around 50 golfers, partners and friends. Entertainment was provided free of charge by ex-liverpudlian Colin Day who sang a range of songs from the 50’s through to the 70’s and in between told a few jokes and got the audience going. El Plantio golf course gave the society 4 free green fees which they agreed could be used on our next society visit against payment for our group of players. A raffle was also held for which each winner won a free round of golf at one of the four golf courses which had so generously donated free games. These courses were Font De Llop, Las Colinas, Vistabella and La Tercia. The amount raised came to 765 euros and was way beyond Terry’s expectations and he would like to thank everyone involved for their generosity. That is around 680 pounds less to raise by his partners son-in- law George to reach his target which will be a wonderful achievement.

Veteran Victor Views Vital Victory FC CARTAGENA - 1 AD ALCORCON - 0 By Steve Hibberd AGEING STRIKER Victor scored his first goal of the season, in this physical but at times entertaining, divison 2a clash with Madrid based side Alcorcon. The home side started brightly, when a fiercely taken long range free kick by Moral was deflected behind for a corner after only 4 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Toche was in a great position to score, but his close range shot was well blocked. It was Botelho who provided a peach of a through ball into the path of Victor, who from the edge of the box cheekily flicked the ball past an on rushing keeper to score the games only goal. Apart from a Lafuente drive which just eased over the bar, the game took a lull in proceedings until a well worked move resulted in Toche once again squandering a glorious opportunity, when he shot wide after 34 minutes. A 22 yard free kick by Victor required another superb save by Herrera, whilst his opposite number Casilla did not have a shot on goal to save, in a half which the home side

totally dominated. It took 77 minutes before Alcorcon put in a decent strike, when Nagore shot just over from long range. Man of the match just had to be the magnificent Cygan who won everything at the heart of Cartagena’s defence, followed closely by Alcorcon keeper Herrera who once again came to his sides rescue, this time taking the ball of the feet of Botelho, thus denying another certain goal.

968 199 279 RODS AND REELS THIS WEEKS match was the third in the winter championship, the venue being the Embalse de Argos. What a change in the weather in only a few weeks. This week upon arrival it was 4 degrees, with only a few weeks ago being in double figures. With the drop in temperature there was a degree of optimism as to how good/bad it was going to fish. Anyway, it certainly fished better than most of us had predicted. Top rods on the day. 1st Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the feeder using maggot with 24.92 Kg. 2nd Lenny (Excultural Attache) Bolton fishing the pole using paste and pellet with 20.02 Kg. 3rd Mick (The Arsenal) Hill fishing the feeder using corn. ANGLERS TOGETHER A group of 4 anglers from local clubs recently visited the River Ebro and during the week caught 7 common carp (all over 20 lb, the largest 45lb) and 11 catfish over the magic 100lb; the best being 179lb (in picture) caught by Alan Reid (Abbey Angling). Unfortunately, due to rain on the first evening of the week, the fishing wasn’t as good as expected but everyone was pleased with their catch and all had personal bests of both carp and catfish. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Meetings are held in two locations on the second Friday and Saturday of each month (depending on public holidays and local fiestas). Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. The next meetings will be held on Friday 12th November at 12 o’clock at Mary’s Bar in Pinar del Campoverde (north of Pilar de la Horadada) and on Saturday 13th November at 12 o’clock at Los Galayos Bar, opposite beach front, at Puerto de Mazarron. Come along to a meeting nearest to you. Members please note there will be a tour of the waters around Murcia on Monday 1st November. Please contact Alan if you are interested in taking part.
