IKEA gets go ahead THE SWEDISH furniture giant, IKEA, has signed a deal this week that will see it open a new store in Alicante. After months of speculation, representatives from the company signed the agreement at a meeting with the Mayor of Alicante, Sonia Castedo, on Monday. The new store will be located in the Rabasa area, which is in the north of the city and will be part of a multi million euro project which also includes a huge commercial centre. This will be the first IKEA store in the Alicante province and in a statement issued by the company, they said that they were delighted to finally be given the go ahead. The document was jointly signed by

the Mayor, IKEA and the promoter of the Rebasa Project, Miguel Carratalá. The Mayor told members of the press that the process to approve the plans for the new store is already well under way, including an environmental impact study, which is due to be released within the next few weeks. The store will generate more than 2000 new jobs and IKEA officials have promised the Alicante City Hall that they will interview the city’s unemployed first. The company is investing €250 million into the Alicante store, which is expected to welcome more that 15 million people during its first year of opening.

Tax-evading priest faces jail A MAN who calls himself a priest - Padre Ángel - is in court facing charges of defrauding the tax authorities of €386,139 between 1992 and 2003. Ángel, from Picassent near Valencia set up his own religious order and used donations from his followers to purchase land and property in Picassent, Gandia and Valencia. He claims he was told to buy the property by the Virgin Mary and he thought that priests were exempt from paying tax. The Archbishop of Valencia says he does not recognise Ángel as a priest. The courts could impose up to an eight-year prison sentence.
