Editors’ Note The Girl Around Town Summer

Shopping Guide is here! Many of you took a gander at our holiday edition last winter and after the amazing response we received, we decided it was time to do some upgrading and bring our readers even further into our world: welcome to GirlAT Shopping Guide 2.0! And the upgrades don’t stop there. We’ve been busy little bees over the past few months: expanding to LA, adding regular contributors and we even have an intern! (FYI: This guide would not be as beautiful without her dedication. Thank you, Sarah!) Spring brought tons of excitement in the way of a photo shoot in Manhattan--many of those pics you’ll see in this guide--and a super cool branding video that showcases not only the antics of us girls around town, but an army of talented actors and crew as well. (Haven’t seen it? Check it out here.) We’re unbelievably excited to enhance Girl Around Town, and we send a GINORMOUS thank you to Mary Ann Rounseville who brought our brand to new heights with her talent and expertise. MA- we wouldn’t be here without your amazing drive and creativity, thank you. We also thank all of our loyal readers. Your eagerness to read daily posts, weekly newsletters or interact with us through social media has created our awesome GirlAT community. Thank you and keep reading!

6

We hope you enjoy our upgraded Shopping Guide as much as we enjoyed making it. With this face-lift we’re also instituting the guide as a quarterly affair so we can keep you up on our favorite fashions and finds each season. Now, we won’t tell you to do this often, but stop reading and get shopping! Oh, By The Way: While this guide is dedicated to all things we currently love in the great, big world of online shopping, there are two amazing companies we worked with on our video and photo shoots that we’re obsessed with and have to gush about, even if they’re not available at the click of a keyboard…. New York Vintage is a fashion Mecca that sells pieces from the world’s all-time best designers, like Chanel and Givenchy, and also houses a museum-quality collection in their private gallery upstairs. True style devotees will make it to 21st Street in NYC to ogle or snag a great piece of history at this otherworldly boutique. Also rocking our world is Ana Locking– a genius designer in Madrid who was benevolent enough to lend us some couture to party in for our video. The exquisite pieces were so much fun to wear and we cannot wait for this amazing Spanish designer to launch her line in the States. Don’t worry, we’ll keep you posted on that for sure!

Until Fall--

Ana Peman Our friend Mary Ann Rounseville not only made our photo shoot a reality, she also brought in some exotic pieces not yet available to American shoppers. We found designer Ana Peman’s backstory to be as compelling as her fashions and sat down over Skype with the Spanish designer... How did you get started as a designer? I started working in the family business as an accountant in Madrid and I started partying. Hard. And I didn’t have enough outfits to keep up with the number of times I was going out, so I started making clothes. The people I was hanging out with loved them so I decided to take it seriously because it was something I really enjoyed. I was doing accounting and at the end of the day there was nothing that was tangible. So to see creative product, and see how girls’ faces lit up when they put something on that looked good and that they liked, was something I really, really enjoyed. Looking at your collections, Indochine most currently, where do you draw your inspiration? My lines are inspired by a need to express something, usually a very strong emotion. As much as I did get started because of my social life, it was really a way to immediately communicate something non-verbally. Most of my collections are reactions to things that have happened in my life. In working through a collection, it becomes a process of cleansing myself. I need to express my emotions and get them out. This collection, Indochine, is a very pretty one because I’m feeling very positive and seeing a lot of beauty in people. This very pretty collection came out of that because of the experiences I’ve had with people around me. You create and produce your materials in Bali, how did you get started there? Bali started because I was developing a line that was becoming more and more popular in Ibiza and I couldn’t possibly manage my manufactur-

ing needs on this island. I had a friend who was producing already in Bali and she said you could make your own prints there and that it was a great place to experiment creatively, so at that point I thought it would be a great idea to go over there and investigate. It’s been a great experience for me because it’s the first time I’ve been able to see the entire process from the very, very, very beginning. I had worked already within big companies where everything was linear, from designing to distribution, but I’d never seen every single aspect of the process, from how the screen printing was done, to how they use fish swimming in run off to ensure that the water left over from the dying process in the factory is safe and ecological; these are details that passed me when I was doing small collections here (in Ibiza). It’s been an incredible experience and to be honest I’ve loved it. Your production plant in Bali looks pretty magical. We love that you took the reigns and moved your manufacturing plant across the world. It’s not unusual for people on this island. A lot of resort designers from this region go to Asia to source their materials. The good thing is that as a small designer without a huge backer–I finance my collections at the end of the day—I can afford to do so much more in Asia. I can get small quantities, print them the way I want, dye them the way I want; there is an incredible amount of things you can do if you’re creative. There are all these different techniques they’re doing --these tie-dye, and salt dyes, and putting baking soda on the fabric to create this kinda marbling effect-- that you can experiment with here, even in very small quantities.

That’s the beauty of Bali, or has been the beauty of Bali until now. It is getting expensive so a lot of small designers have to think twice before they go out to see if it’s cost effective for them to do it. Who has better beaches: Ibiza or Bali? Ibiza. There is nothing compared to the beaches in Ibiza, and I’ve been everywhere! But the beauty of Bali is that their culture is extremely interesting, their mentality is extremely poetic and the way they go about their lives and value system is a relief from Europe. How do you describe the spirit of the Ibiza woman? Freedom. Total inhibition. Ibiza is where you can wear that dress that you would never wear anywhere else. Who is your audience and do you have plans for expansion? I think you need to create a niche for yourself nowadays because you can’t do it all. I know this Ibiza culture, this lifestyle; I know what it’s like to wake up in the morning and go out for lunch and all of the sudden be invited on a yacht and then go back to a beach party and to end up in a club at night. This happens here and you have to be ready for it. There is a way to be able to be well dressed the whole day and night without having to change or feel uncomfortable. That’s my niche. I understand it well and I’d like to continue it in other resort areas. (In terms of expansion) Ibiza is a great place to test what styles and shapes women want and what fabrics they’re comfortable in.

on a mannequin, making the first piece and seeing a result. In Ibiza, you live this life where you could wake up in the morning, get invited to a yacht and then end up in a club that night, how do you balance work and play in a world that is so full of play? I have a lot of vitamins! I think it’s possible if you make sure that whatever you’re doing, you’re doing because you want to do it. If you have to exert energy into things that aren’t flowing, it’s impossible. You’d be exhausted in a week. But people say there’s an energy here that you don’t find other places, and for some people that’s the magic of this island. But at this point, my work is my primary focus during the (resort) season, so it’s a month and a half of intense work to make sure that everybody is satisfied. And then at the beginning and end of the season I can kinda let loose a little bit. So you’re saying we CAN have it all? You can here! {Cue a very generous offer from Ana for us to visit her in Ibiza. Yes, we’ve already accepted.} We can’t wait for the sometimes too-structured women of the US to let loose in the flow of Ana’s dresses and the Ibiza lifestyle. Look for Ana Peman to hit Miami and more resort locales in the coming year.

What is your favorite part of the creative process? Making it. Sometimes I start with a powerful pattern. In that case the fabric speaks to me and tells me what to do because I’m expressing something through the print. Or sometimes I’ll fall in love with a design. But either way, my favorite part is being shut away in my studio and draping fabrics Ana’s production plant in Bali

Beauty Summer Beauty Picks from Nuy Cho

Thaikoon for Nars Limited Edition Nail Polish

It’s true, neon is hot this season, but Nuy has been a fan of neon toes for hot weather for a long time. “It’s the tropical gal in me,” she eplains. “With a tan, bright nails look wonderful with a beautiful leather thong flat, or even just a simple pair of Havianas.” Nuy is certain you can’t go wrong with these limited edition polishes, which were named after Indian spices.

For sunny days, Nuy says she loves it when women just show off their skin and natural glow. She asks, “Why hide it under makeup? It’s nice to sometimes just do a tinted moisturizer, or even just sunblock, and if you want to kick it up, add mascara and only a hot lip perhaps!” One of her new go-to mascaras is CoverGirl’s new LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara. Nuy explains, “It has a nice, thick wand, which is great for plumping wimpy, fine lashes like mine.”

TIGI Sleek Mystique Blow Out Balm

“I have really been into a new hairstyle lately, which is easy and relaxed for summer. It’s a combo of bedhead and beachy,” says Nuy. She uses TIGI’s Sleek Mystique Blow Out Balm on the ends after a wash and contion, then after a bit of a tousle and rough blow-dry, she adds Serge Normant’s Meta Luxe Hair Spray evenly all throughout and add tons of volume with her hands by scrunching and messing it up. Nuy adds, “It’s fun, easy and takes ten minutes!” Serge Normant Meta Lux Hair Spray

Nuy swears by a “hot pink for a bold lip, which is trending this season. One I love right now, for its texture, feel and look is: Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Intense in 36. It’s got great pigment concentration and is absolutely pitch-perfect.”

AMOREphosis Girl Around Town interviews Camille Grammer for the scoop on creating a line of jewelry with friends... What part of the jewelry design process do you find most interesting? I love going to gem shows and getting inspired. Sometimes that’s how we start a new design; we’ll find a stone that we love and then work around it. Do you have a favorite piece from AMOREphosis’ collections, and if so what does it mean to you? I love the Sea Green Chalcedony pieces because they have such a light, airy, elegant look, and they go with everything. Each of the pieces use beautiful materials from gold to semi-precious gems, what stone inspires you the most, and why? Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I’d have to say that Aquamarine is one of my favorites. It has such a peaceful, serene look to it. I’m drawn to that color! What was the genesis of AMOREphosis, and how will it continue to, well, morph? It started as a way to create something for women that gave back to children and families in need. This mission will always stand as the backbone of AMOREphosis, but we would love to continue expanding so that we can help our charities and others even more. We’re in the process of designing a new collection to add to our line, so look for that in the coming months. 26

What do you hope women feel when they wear these pieces? Beautiful and inspired! We put a lot of thought into the stones that we choose and what they mean to us. We want that meaning to come through when women wear them. We also want women to feel inspired knowing that they’re helping to make a difference. AMOREphosis was started by you with three friends, do each of you have a specific area of interest in the company? Do different collections reflect the different personalities? We are actually all very hands on. As far as the design process is concerned, we are all involved in every step because we want to create pieces that we all love and would buy ourselves. We also try to use the fact that there are 4 of us to our advantage! Some might think that it’s too many cooks in the kitchen, but it helps because we each represent a different perspective and market of potential buyers. As far as different collections reflecting different personalities, I would say that there are elements of each of us in every one.

Sea Green Chalcedony Earrings

And on that topic, we’re a female-run business as well and we know what it’s like to work with your closest friends, so we’re curious: are there ever any cat fights over collections? Do personalities flair over the jewelry’s flair? Although we have relatively similar styles, there are definitely differences sometimes. In the beginning when we only had one collection, it was pretty easy to agree on things. But as we started to expand, and we all became more comfortable with the process, we had to learn how to handle differences of opinions. For big company-related issues, we all have to agree. For design-related issues, we have a majority rule: if 3 out of 4 love it, it sticks!

Turquoise Necklace

Amethyst Cuff

The launch party at Fred Segal looked fab, are there any other boutiques that carry your collections? Thanks! It was a lot of fun. Stylehaus on Melrose also carries some of our pieces. You’re a Malibu girl, what’s your favorite spot to grab a bite in the neighborhood? Malibu Beach Inn. It has a gorgeous patio, overlooks the ocean, and it has a view of the surfers and the pier. Love it! Black Onyx Ring

Salad

The Perfect Summer Salad!

1 Chicken Breast 2 Heirloom Tomatoes 2 Ears of Corn 2 Slices Wheat Bread 1/2 Cup Fresh Bail Leaves, torn 1-2 Cups Butter Lettuce, torn

Vinaigrette 1 lemon, zest and juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard sea salt, pepper Serves 2 Preheat oven to 430°F. Line a rimmed sheet pan (don’t let those juices drip into your oven!) with parchment paper, place chicken on it and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake 25 minutes or until cooked through. Shred and place in a large mixing bowl. Grill corn for about 6-8 minutes until charred on a cast iron griddle or grill pan. Cut off of cob into the large mixing bowl. While corn is grilling, cut the wheat bread into cubes and place in the oven for 5 minutes until crispy. Place in the large mixing bowl. Slice tomatoes into cubes and place in mixing bowl along with the basil and butter lettuce. Whisk together the vinaigrette ingredients. Toss (makes 4 margaritas) with the salad and serve immediately. 1/2 cup fresh lime juice (5 limes) 1 cup prickly pear juice (4 prickly pears) 1 cup orange liqueur (such as Triple Sec) 1 cup white tequila (such as Patron) 1 lime for garnish Salt or Sugar, to taste

Emily Welsh Shares Summer Recipe Secrets

To “juice” the prickly pears, cut them in half then scoop the insides with a spoon into a food processor or blender. Blend well until all juices are released and then strain through a strainer into the pitcher. Juice the limes into the pitcher – make sure there are no seeds! Measure the Triple Sec and Patron into the pitcher. Put the pitcher into the fridge for about 30 minutes to get it icy cold, shake in a martini shaker with ice and serve in glasses with ice. If you like salt or sugar on the rim of your margarita, rub the lime around the edge of the glass and then dip the rim of each glass into a plate of salt, sugar, or even a salt/sugar combo.
