hile the COVID-19 pandemic did affect the HVACR industry in more than one way, some sectors of the business still thrives under the uncertain circumstances. In fact, the U.S. industrial OEM Evapco, which produces packaged low-charge ammonia (R717) systems, expects the business to significantly grow as the effects of the pandemic subsides in 2021. According to the company’s Vice President Kurt Liebendorfer, the numerous large capital projects that have been postponed due to COVID-19 are likely to be taken off hold once things start returning to the new normal. This will be not much of a surprise since the HVACR industry does play a major role in ending this crisis. Now that vaccines are already getting distributed across the world, many will demand for the industry’s services when it comes to storing and transporting the vaccines. For instance, Stirling Ultracold in Athens, Ohio has developed a novel cooling technology for freezers, so they can accommodate the Pfizer/ BioNTech and Moderna vaccine, both of which require specific temperatures to maintain efficacy. The five-year-old Austrian engineering and manufacturing company Mirai Intex has also chipped in their expertise and

To make this a reality, the HVAC&R industry will play a major role in the process, particularly in providing the refrigeration system needed to store and transport some of the vaccines at their specific ultra-low temperatures. Many of these fridges make use of natural refrigerants.

Unlike the Mirai Intex’s, the company’s fridge uses a “freepiston Stirling engine” design. This, in turn, employs a reciprocating piston and displacer that compress and expand 10g of helium (R704) with a continuous, gravitydriven thermosiphon in order to cool 90g of the hydrocarbon ethane (R170). Other ultra-low-temperature freezer providers that can produce fridges with as low as -86°C (-123°F) and make use of natural refrigerants (propane/R290 and R170) include the PHC Corporation of North America (PHCbi) and ThermoFisher Scientific. Apart from the cooling technology itself, a new study from the University of Birmingham in UK called However, developing countries often lack these “seamless, fully integrated functioning cold chains” as revealed by the study. This is where the SolarChill Project, the 20-year collaboration between international organizations like Greenpeace, will come in handy. While vaccines are on their way to distribution, we need to continue imposing mitigation measures to limit COVID-19 infections. Among these measures is to ensure proper indoor ventilation. This includes using stand-alone HEPA units or inserting MERV (13 and above) or HEPA air filters into HVAC units. If possible, adjust centralized HVAC units to draw more outdoor air, as well. Another strategy is keeping a room’s relative humidity between 40% and 60%, especially in the winter season when indoor humidity drops. Professional HVAC/R Services, a U.S. contractor, has also helped in developing a unit which can sanitize the air in hotel rooms. Tony Gleeson, CEO and Company Secretary for AIRAH (Australian Institute of Refrigeration) stated that COVID-19 raised public’s awareness regarding the importance of HVAC systems. This may possibly lead to increased demand for the sector’s services. In fact, the Australian government is already focusing some of its recovery programs at upgrading their HVAC&R equipment. That is why although the COVID-19 impacted the industry last year, the commercial and industrial refrigeration sector, which are essential for the processing, storage, and distribution of food supply, has been less affected as noted by John Ackermann, the owner of South Africa-based Jack Agencies, and former Publisher/Editor of the Cold Link newspaper. According to him, industrial refrigeration has done better than any industry during the pandemic, mainly because of some large projects. These included large food processing plants, distribution centers for supermarket groups, and third-party refrigerated warehouses. It is expected that this trend will continue in 2021. 48

ippmann Innovation (Ti) and Table Talk Pies hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Armory Cold Storage, a new cold storage warehouse in Worcester, MA. “America’s Favorite Pie” manufacturer, Table Talk Pies contracted Ti to complete a one-million cubic foot, state-of-the-art freezer to complement their existing manufacturing and distribution facility. The celebration was a long-time in the making for Harry Kokkinis, owner of Table Talk. The company started in 1924 by the Kokkinis family. Their humble origins began as fresh pies were wheeled

ost of the misconceptions of the vaccine are around eligibility, effectiveness, and safety. As states continue their COVID-19 vaccine rollouts, misinformation regarding vaccinations continue to circulate. ValuePenguin decided to test Americans’ general knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccine to get a better understanding of what’s really confusing them. We quizzed more than 1,500 Americans on their know-how on the vaccine’s distribution, effectiveness, and cost. Nearly three-quarters of respondents flunked the test, with an average grade of 50%. 80
Key findings: Respondents scored an average of 50% on our vaccine quiz, earning six out of 12 points. Baby boomers scored the highest (58% average), while members of Generation Z scored the lowest (42% average). Women (58% average) scored slightly better than men (50% average). The biggest misconceptions about the vaccine surround eligibility. Seventy percent didn’t know those who are breastfeeding or pregnant are able to make their own decision about whether to get vaccinated when they’re eligible, and 66% didn’t know children younger than 16 aren’t able to get vaccinated.
Consumers are also confused about what it takes for full effectiveness. Nearly a quarter (23%) of respondents think the vaccine is nearly 95% effective after the first shot has been given, which isn’t true. And 53% of respondents didn’t know that one must receive two shots of the same vaccine for it to be fully effective. Many are concerned that the vaccine isn’t safe. Twelve percent believe that it’s extremely likely they will have an allergic reaction after getting vaccinated, while just 28% believe that they won’t have any allergic reaction. Education level and income are among the biggest drivers in whether respondents planned to get the vaccine. Those with college degrees and high earners were more likely to definitely plan on getting vaccinated than those without a college degree and with a lower income. 81

Seegene develops world first COVID-19 variant test capable of identifying origins of virus variants

outh Korea’s biotechnology firm Seegene (KQ096530) said Monday it developed the world’s first COVID-19 diagnostic variant test, capable of screening COVID-19 and identifying multiple mutant variations in a single reaction. Seegene’s new variant test, the ‘Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Variants I Assay,’ can detect and differentiate virus variations, including those found to be more contagious and fatal. The new variant test not only detects COVID-19, but can also identify major genetic variations that seem to have originated from the UK, South Africa as well as other regions including Japan and Brazil.

Will stricter internet censorship be implemented in Hong Kong?
here’s worries in Hong Kong after the government dealt its first ruling censoring the internet, after a court order was issued issuing an interim injunction against platforms including LIHKG (a forum similar to Reddit) and messaging app Telegram. It’s one of the ways that Beijing’s influence has begun to impact politics, freedom of the press and education — and a result of the protests that started this year. It was in June 2019 that millions took to the streets calling for greater democracy — including universal suffrage. There’s also a call for independent inquiry to investigate instances of police violence against the protestors. Similar to many political movements around the world, the internet has become a critical tool for protestors who use online forums and messaging to mobilise and spread the word. Unlike mainland China, which already experiences restrictions on internet access, Hong Kong has maintained very little online censorship.
The start of censorship On 31 October, Hong Kong’s High Court granted an induction order, banning people from “disseminating, circulating, publishing or re-publishing” online “any material or information that promotes, encourages or incites the use or threat of violence”.

Pro-democracy lawmaker Charles Mok criticised the move, stating: “The temporary injunction sets an extremely dangerous precedent for introducing internet censorship of online speech… it is a serious breach of citizens’ freedom of expression and Hong Kong’s supposed free flow of information.” Should further laws be made, it will have a massive impact on the protests. Apps and various platforms online have been the most effective way for protestors to communicate; censorship policies would limit their ability to keep the movement alive. There’s also the effect censorship will have on the economy — especially when it comes to the innovation and technology industries. The oppressive measures could also damage Hong Kong’s international reputation; blocking freedom of speech would be seen as an attack against democracy and a human right. The Hong Kong Internet Service Providers Association have already opposed the blocking of internet services, warning that “given the complexity of the modern internet including technologies like VPN, cloud and cryptographies, it is impossible to effectively… block any services” adding that the only option would be to “put the whole internet of Hong Kong behind large scale surveillance firewall.”
More bans already in place Fears around potential internet censorship have only heightened since the the Emergency Regulations Ordinance was invoked to ban face masks — used by the protestors during mass peaceful demonstrations. In October 2019, a male university student and woman were charged with illegally wearing face masks — the first charge of its kind since the law was invoked. Demonstrators saw the charge as an indication of more censorship to come. 101

Pan-United Signs Agreement with South Korea’s Largest Concrete Company Eugene Corporation
