magine pushing your shopping cart through the grocery store and getting push-notifications on your phone that say “I see you are buying basmati rice, here’s a recipe you may like”. Examples like this and other ways technology will impact brick and mortar stores were discussed at a recent International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) conference. The overall message was: physical retail isn’t dead – but boring retail is. Technology has pushed all industries to evolve, and retail is no different. This transformation is a new phase full of opportunity for smart retailers.

Retail is evolving into DESTINATION (place, experience, entertainment, and food) and DISTRIBUTION (last mile delivery, omni-channeling, and fulfillment). Over the past few years, we’ve seen a lot of examples of this. E-commerce sites like Amazon buying into brick and mortar (Whole Foods) and stores that were previously only brick and mortar creating new omni-channel outlets to market their products. Much of the change we see is driven by a change in demographics, with millennials having a larger share of buying power and different preferences.

This age group prefers to shop on-line, but will shop brick and mortar stores that offer an “experience”. In the past few years, department store performance has been dragging down overall brick and mortar revenues. While department store sales have plunged, e-commerce sales have grown to over $453 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Still, only 8.9% of total sales are e-commerce. So, what does this mean to Gilroy and its residents? Sales tax revenues are the most significant revenue source to the City of Gilroy’s General Fund and represents nearly half of the General Fund tax revenues. That means public safety (police, fire), road maintenance, recreation, etc. are dependent upon these revenues. Community minded citizens should be mindful of how they spend their dollars. Purchases made at brick and mortar businesses in Gilroy help pay for these necessary services. Vote with your dollar and vote for Gilroy.
