It’s a beautiful time of year with the smell of spring flowers blooming. Enjoy the nice weather! In addition to this newsletter, we have a monthly calendar so don’t forget to look for new and exciting opportunities to participate. Let’s make the next three months AMAZING!! There are many ways to get involved in Senior Center programs. Here are just a few:

Volunteer

Fun Clubs

Looking to do something fun and meaningful? We need volunteer help in all areas of the center. We have a terrific group of volunteers, but we could use more.

Mondays- Wii Bowling, Bridge, Coloring

We would not be able to accomplish all that we do if it were not for the volunteers who give their time and energy on a daily basis. Thank you to those who serve and welcome to those who are interested in serving.

Thursdays- Bridge Club, RummiKub, Jam Sessions

Tuesdays- Mexican Train, RummiKub, Mahjong Wednesdays- Bunco, Knit/ Crochet, Jewelry

Resources and Food Bags >>>

Outreach Services The Senior Center offer resources to assist with the common needs of seniors. For more information, contact Lisa at 480-503-6061. You don’t have to spend time looking for resources. I can provide information on matters such as DMV, insurance claims, or social security questions. I also have information on resources for AHCCCS, SNAP (food stamps), legal aid, Medicare assistance, government phones, and Dial-A-Ride. I look forward to serving you!

Food Bags The Gilbert Senior Center is happy to provide a monthly Food Bag for qualified individuals. Participants must sign up one week in advance and not be receiving a food bag from Chandler Christian Community Center or affiliates. For more information, call 480-503-6061. Food Bag pick up is the 3rd Wed.

Home Delivered Meals You can have a hot, nutritious meal delivered to your home. If you or know someone you know could benefit, please contact our HDM Coordinator Pat Hutfles at (480)503-6058 or pat@chandlerfoodbank.org. Our Knitting/Crocheting club makes and donates handmade baby hats & blankets to local hospitals. The club donations are over 500 items to 3 different hospitals in the east valley . We offer home delivered meals Monday- Friday between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm depending on your location. Participants may qualify for financial assistance or pay $5 per meal, billed monthly. Home delivered meals are a perfect solution for those unable to leave home or recovering from a procedure or sickness.

Keep Your Brain Young with Music & Laughter If you want to firm up your body, head to the gym. If you want to exercise your brain, listen to music. Music can be medicine for your mind, with benefits from memory improvement to stress relief. 

“There are few things that stimulate the brain the way music does,” says one Johns Hopkins otolaryngologist. “If you want to keep your brain engaged throughout the aging process, listening to or playing music is a great tool. It provides a total brain workout.”

Health Presentations Offered

Coloring Club Come join in for a fun afternoon on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 1pm for Coloring Club. You will have the opportunity to create beautiful pages and have great conversations with friends.

Join in wonderful talks about various health subjects. Most presentations will be scheduled on different days, so make sure you are checking the monthly calendar.

Diabetes 6 week Class May 19-June 23rd Fridays 12:45pm-2:45pm Join us for a fun and informative six-part series focused on, Diabetes. You will learn about ways to prevent it or ways to maintain it. The Healthy Living Diabetes workshop can teach you the skills you need to manage your condition and get your life back!

CCCC provides senior nutrition at both the Gilbert and Chandler Senior Centers and activities at Gilbert Senior Center.

We have Yahtzee, Words with Friends, Mahjong, UNO, Sequence Apples to Apples, and of course more Rummikub sets. Anyone is welcome to use them. If there is a game you don’t see that you think your fellow Seniors will enjoy, please let us know!

Peach Crisp Smoothie Prep time 5 mins

Cook time 3 mins

Total time 8 mins

Serves 1

Ingredients 1/2 banana 1 frozen peach Small handful of raw walnuts 1 tsp vanilla 1 tbsp. pure maple syrup 2 tbsp. oats Dash of ground cinnamon 2 tbsp. soymilk or other non-dairy milk

Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth. Add more ice or milk as needed. Pour into a glass and serve immediately. Makes one large smoothie.

Walk in the Park This April, you're invited to "Walk All Over Poverty." The seventh annual CCCC Walk in the Park is Saturday April 8, 8:00-10:00 am at Discovery Park in Gilbert. Every year, participants in the Walk raise money to alleviate poverty in the Southeast Valley. Proceeds benefit the programs at CCCC that not only provide relief to families in crisis but also teach families new life skills that enable them to live well and to break the cycle of poverty. The cost to walk is $20 per person and $30 per family. Group discounts are available. Encourage your family and friends to donate to your team!

AZ Charitable Tax Credit Arizona provides a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for charitable contributions to a Qualifying Charitable Organization, such as Chandler Christian Community Center. The tax credit is now $400 for an individual or head of household and $800 for a married couple filing jointly. The deadline to donate is April 15, 2017.
