The Healing Power of Gratitude Can saying thank you make you healthier? After Pam Butler’s divorce, she lost her health insurance coverage and was not able to receive her critical thyroid medicine, which prompted her to visit The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center’s Urgent Care Center. This visit turned Pam into a lifelong patient as she recognized that the Health Center could provide all of her health care needs, as well as educational programs and even friendships to help maintain her health.

“To have something like the Health Center right in your backyard, with everything in one building, is great. You can’t get more convenient than that.” -Pam Butler Pam recently participated in the Healing Power of Gratitude program, a new health and wellness series offered at The

Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center that teaches how gratitude can improve your overall health and well-being. Annia Reyes, Health Education Coordinator at the Health Center, educates patients and community members about gratitude through proven techniques, such as: keeping a daily gratitude journal, visualizations, social support, goal setting, and positive self-talk. Getting an A+ on Teen Physicals

The importance of annual physicals

Dr. Avi Silber, MD, FAAP, Medical Director Annual physicals confirm that your child is growing and developing appropriately. The teen years are a critical time for well-visits, as this is one of the greatest periods of developmental growth that your child will experience, second only to their first year of life. It is vital for an adolescent / teen to establish a relationship with their doctor. Most pediatricians will spend some time interviewing an adolescent alone during their appointment. Although some parents may express resistance, it is important for an adolescent to have a physician with whom they can confide in and discuss difficult issues that may arise in the future. Typically during an exam, physicians will check a child’s height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, heart, lungs, vision, hearing, behavior, reflexes, and motor skills. Additionally, providers will monitor cholesterol levels, lead poisoning, and scoliosis. Depending on your child’s age, the provider will also discuss safety, whether it is about bike and stranger safety for young children or safety regarding alcohol, drugs, and sexual activity for teens. Dr. Dillard Elmore will be moving on to a position as a medical director in the NYC area. We would like to introduce you to two veteran Medical Providers at our Health Center, Dr. Sneha Shrivastava, and Koreen Thomas, FNP, who will be working with Dr. Elmore during the month of October, ensuring a smooth transition of care when he moves on starting October 31, 2015. For your convenience, the New Windsor office will continue to provide evening and weekend hours. In the upcoming months, we will be reconstructing our New Windsor office, modernizing the facility by adding exam rooms and services to better meet the needs of our patients.

The Drive for a New Mobile Health Unit

In order to address the critical health needs of Orange County’s seniors, the homeless population and those without access to care. The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center has greatly improved access for patients by offering mobile healthcare. We are able to provide preventative care to treat a number of diseases, in addition to offering general health screenings, vaccinations and dental screenings where these services are needed most. The demand and response has been tremendous often providing our services at multiple locations in a single day. However, we are limited by the inefficiencies of our current mobile health vehicle. By purchasing a new mobile unit we will be able to provide these services year round, regardless of weather conditions. Pumpkin Bread

Serves: 8 Servings Source: Just Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables Ingredients: 1 cup canned pumpkin 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup applesauce 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup raisins Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. 2. In a large bowl, stir together pumpkin, sugar, oil, applesauce and eggs. 3. In a separate bowl, combine remaining ingredients, except raisins. 4. Add flour mixture to large bowl. Stir until moist. Stir in raisins. 5. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan. 6. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Living Well with Diabetes is a 12-week provider-led workgroup that teaches participants how to better control their diabetes and related symptoms through diet, physical activity, stress management, and ongoing self-care. Chronic Disease Self-Management is a six-week, evidence-based program developed using a Stanford University model that helps patients better manage and overcome the symptoms that can prevent them from leading active and fulfilling lives. The Healing Power of Gratitude Can saying thank you make you healthier? After Pam Butler’s divorce, she lost her health insurance coverage and was not able to receive her critical thyroid medicine, which prompted her to visit The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center’s Urgent Care Center. This visit turned Pam into a lifelong patient as she recognized that the Health Center could provide all of her health care needs, as well as educational programs and even friendships to help maintain her health.

Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center that teaches how gratitude can improve your overall health and well-being. Annia Reyes, Health Education Coordinator at the Health Center, educates patients and community members about gratitude through proven techniques, such as: keeping a daily gratitude journal, visualizations, social support, goal setting, and positive self-talk. The importance of annual physicals

Dr. Avi Silber, MD, FAAP, Medical Director Annual physicals confirm that your child is growing and developing appropriately. The teen years are a critical time for well-visits, as this is one of the greatest periods of developmental growth that your child will experience, second only to their first year of life. It is vital for an adolescent / teen to establish a relationship with their doctor. Most pediatricians will spend some time interviewing an adolescent alone during their appointment. Although some parents may express resistance, it is important for an adolescent to have a physician with whom they can confide in and discuss difficult issues that may arise in the future. Typically during an exam, physicians will check a child’s height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, heart, lungs, vision, hearing, behavior, reflexes, and motor skills. Additionally, providers will monitor cholesterol levels, lead poisoning, and scoliosis. Depending on your child’s age, the provider will also discuss safety, whether it is about bike and stranger safety for young children or safety regarding alcohol, drugs, and sexual activity for teens.
