ABOUT GHOST RANCH Ghost Ranch is a place of magnificent natural beauty, comprising deep, multicolored canyons and bluffs, plains, grasslands and streams. Its rocks span 130 million years of ancient geological history, representing lakes, floodplains and deserts. Its fossils illuminate the beginning of the Age of Dinosaurs in North America and provide a new paradigm in the world of paleontology. Its archaeological record predates adobe walls and kivas; its hearths and other sites date to 8,000 years ago. Its history includes Native Americans and Spanish, Mexican, French and Anglo immigrations, a rough and tumble ranching era, a dude ranch, visitors and residents such as Ansel Adams, Arthur Pack, Georgia O’Keeffe and Robert Oppenheimer and today is an education and retreat center operated by the Presbyterian Church (USA) which is welcoming to all. The landscape attracted first ancient people, for its resources, and later colonizers from other lands, including adventurers, artists and entrepreneurs who were attracted by the stunning beauty. Like O’Keeffe, they were at first oblivious to the geological and paleontological contexts of the sediments, and to the Spirit of the Creator, and were simply amazed by the stunning beauty. So many who come into contact with Ghost Ranch come to appreciate its myriad dimensions of beauty and spirituality.

Creating Possibilities: Listening for New Directions in Life

The Wheel of Creativity: Taking Your Place in the Adventure of Life

Creating Spaciousness: A New Year’s Sabbath Retreat

G15CDS111 at Casa del Sol

G15S113

G15S112

Katherine Robertson-Pilling

Wayne Muller Kelly Wendorf

Do you want to move to the next level of passionate achievement in your life?

Sabbatical is a practice honoring the rhythm of light and dark, work and rest, action and contemplation. Shared in many forms and cultures, it honors the necessary wisdom of dormancy. Certain plant species must lay dormant in winter to bear fruit in the spring.

Nina Ross Traditionally, New Year’s is a time when we make an accounting of where we’ve been and where we are going. Through active imagination, journaling and artwork we will have the opportunity to listen within to the still small voices for guidance and possible new directions for our lives. As a group, we will have the opportunity to share our dreams each time we come together. Find support in the group for reaching goals, expanding our visions and feeling gratefully alive with new ideas. No prior art experience is necessary, just an openness to explore and experiment.

Whether you’re just starting out in life, transitioning through loss to a new life, or longing to move from success in one field to another, this course (based on Katherine’s book of the same title) gives you the road map to see the landscape of your life as a creative playground. This retreat will help explain and explore the 12 stages of the natural process of creating anything, from a business to a new marriage. Learn to recognize where you are in that process in every aspect of your life.

Before entering a new year, come and learn about the deep tradition of Sabbath. Experience Sabbath in its many forms through teachings, practices, silence and ritual threaded together. Take home simple practices you can apply all year.

Empower yourself to live deliberately.

Before being greeted by the majestic red rocks, cascading mountains, and lake surrounding Ghost Ranch, I felt like I had lost my passion, purpose, desire, excitement, my romantic soul, and my artist’s touch. It was at Jan Term at Ghost

How do you find yourself, if you don’t know where you are?

Contemplative Church: a no-stress gathering for leaders tired of playing church and interested in cultivating God devotion through spiritual practices which might be the primary hope for doing and being the future global Christian church.

In this postmodern techno-addicted world, we are losing touch with place and its foundational and transformational effects upon our lives. Through journaling, contemplation, nature walks, group discussions, music and the creation of our own sacred places, bring an awareness of locational alchemy back into your life. Locate self within the stillness of Casa del Sol and the Ghost Ranch winter landscape.

20

In an era of increasing confusion and opportunities, the Church is invited to an ancient alternative. During this week-long course, you are invited to return, receive and re-discover the contemplative, inner-dimension of Christianity through prayer, teaching, spiritual practices, dialogue, time in nature and more.

| GHOSTRANCH.ORG

Instead of being lured into the commercial dressings of Valentine’s Day, bring your special loved one and be lured into the beauty of Ghost Ranch. Enjoy quiet and expansive space, allowing you and your partner to experience the True Nature of your relationship. This package includes: • 2 nights lodging in a room with a private bath • 5 meals (including a special Valentine’s meal) • Guided hike • Night sky viewing • Other special events.

Friday–Monday, February 13-16 Getting to the Heart of the Brain: Why it Matters G15H221 All Inclusive, Double-Occupancy: Private Bath: $495 Semi-Private Bath: $415 Communal Bath: $375 Layne Kalbfleisch Learn how your brain remembers, creates, and imagines in childhood and across life, the difference between good and bad stress, and how to develop new skills to keep your brain healthy, enhance memory and support your talents. The class is designed as a series of experiences that will disrupt the old understanding about the brain (for instance, “You are born with all of the brain cells you will ever have”) and exchange it for fresh, emerging information and new insights.

Why is it that some things are easier for you to do than others? How do play, nature, music and making art influence you in ways that nothing else can? This combination of science, art, and craft with intentional exercises using images and prose will allow you to develop a deep-felt understanding of what is vital to your brain’s health.

Friday–Sunday, February 13-15 Expansive Skies: An Astronomy Weekend G15O221 All Inclusive, Double-Occupancy: Private Bath: $375 Semi-Private Bath: $315 Communal Bath: $295 Ghost Ranch Staff

Dr. Layne Kalbfleisch is a neuroscientist and educational psychologist at George Mason University. A former middle school teacher and tutor of twice exceptional children, she is a pioneer in brain research that examines the relationship between talent and disability in autism spectrum and attention disorders.

While we can never bemoan the advent of electricity, we must recognize that with its infiltration in our lives, many have lost a connection to the night sky. Fortunately, it is readily available at Ghost Ranch. Come reorient yourself by soaking in the sea of stars that stare down upon this Land of Enchantment.

Spring Break 2015

The Power of Listening as a Sacred Art G15CDS31X All Inclusive, Double-Occupancy: Private Bath: $450, Semi-Private Bath: $375 Kay Lindahl According to St. John of the Cross, listening is God’s first language. In the fast-paced culture we live in, speaking has become our first language. We spend hours preparing to speak but little time towards listening. This workshop focuses on the power of Sacred Listening–the art of becoming a listening presence. As we open up to listening as a spiritual practice, we find it transforms our relationships, nurtures our inner voice and inspires our spiritual growth.

Spring Ministry Week Monday, March 9 to Saturday, March 14, 2015

Monday–Saturday, March 9-14 Getting to “Thrive“ in Ministry G15S321 All Inclusive, Double-Occupancy: Private Bath: $995, Semi-Private Bath: $795, Communal Bath: $735 Rev. Andrew Black Rev. Jan Gough Rev. Harry Eberts Am I merely surviving in ministry, waiting for the next move or early retirement? Do I need to be revived by the breath of God, or at least a little breeze that might bring relief to daily pressures and struggles? Is it really possible at my age to thrive, and be part of a thriving church? If you have read this far then you might fit the description of countless pastors who still hope to be part of the transformation and renewal of the church . . . in our lifetime! During this week we intend to model what a church experience might look

like on its better days. We will share our stories and seek wisdom from the Biblical stories (which seem all too familiar to our own stories!), look at various models of ministry, affirm pushback as a positive sign that we are doing our job, and then find relief and empowerment through learning the art of self-differentiation. Worship will be simple; rest, sustenance and support will be abundant; and spiritual direction will be offered throughout the week. Our goal is to glimpse again the wonder, mystery and awe of God, the same God who called us once and is renewing us now.

Monday–Saturday, March 9-14 R&R for Spouses/Partners G15R&R321 $300 includes lodging and meals Bring your spouse/partner for a week of rest and renewal, a change of routine and an infusion of spectacular landscapes.

Peace Chamber Gathering Tuesday, April 7 to Thursday, April 9, 2015

What I recommend for people who truly seek insights is to take a walk. Just walk with strong intent for twenty miles and go home. Then watch. The great insights will start coming; it has to do with walking. —Joseph Rael

From the Mind and Heart of an American Indian Mystic: A 3-day special retreat/gathering with Mr. Joseph Rael It is with great honor that Ghost Ranch receives again the wisdom and presence of Mr. Joseph Rael, especially during the period of the Sacred Fire Ceremony/Sound Peace Chamber Anniversary (April 7). Mr. Rael, during this special gathering, will offer teaching, conversation and ceremony to help open mind, heart and spirit.

Joseph Rael is regarded as one of the great Native American holy men of our time. In 1983, Mr. Rael had the vision to build a Sound Peace Chamber, a kiva-like structure where people of all races might gather to chant and sing for world peace and to purify the earth and oceans. Mr. Rael is the author of a number of books, including Beautiful Painted Arrow. Note: Mr. Rael will also give the closing talk/ceremony at the conclusion of the Gathering of Waters event. CASA DEL SOL

Private Bath Semi-Private bath & Hermitages Casa del Sol hosts Ghost Ranch courses that are spiritual in nature, and its rooms are set aside for participants in classes with a “CDS” in the course number. This charming, historic hacienda was built in the 1930’s. Anchored under the Puerto de Cielo rock formation two miles from the main Ranch campus, it has a spacious courtyard looking out on the desert and Pedernal, Ghost Ranch’s landmark mountain. It has a fireplace, kitchen and simple living space surrounded by inspiring landscapes. Six bedrooms share three bathrooms; a seventh room has its own private bath. Most rooms have doors that open onto the courtyard. There are three hermitages that can be used for short or extended stays.

Lodging Types The hermitages are self-contained with their own bathroom, small refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot. They are for people seeking sabbatical/retreat time.

Multiple bunk beds and very simple furnishings, keep them among Ghost Ranch’s most affordable options. Mesa units, very rustic, have one bedroom with two beds (2 sets of bunks, or a twin + bunk bed) and a dresser, chair, shelf, mirror and reading lamp. Many rooms have a sink. Some buildings have a central lounge area with large screen windows that have stunning views. A few rooms on the main level sleep up to seven or eight people and are perfect for groups. Some rooms have a closet, dresser, chair and desk; others have closets and sofas. Large communal bathrooms and showers are located outside, a few steps down a breezeway or covered porch. Staff House has smaller rooms but has comfortable interior communal spaces, open fields for play and stargazing and is close to the Dining

Hall. Corral Block has larger rooms, an open field for play and stargazing, and is close to the Museums, Lower Pavilion meeting space, and the Welcome Center. It is a 5–10 minute walk to the Dining Hall.

Campground with Communal Bath

Open from mid-May until early October, Ghost Ranch’s most affordable lodging option, the camping sites are nestled in a canyon surrounded by red rocks. The Campground has facilities for tent camping, with or without electricity. Most sites have a table and a fire ring and only a very limited number have shade. Campfires are permitted only when weather conditions allow. The communal bath house is equipped with an ice machine, shared refrigerator, showers, sinks and coin-operated laundry. There is a 10-20 minute walk to the Dining Hall and meeting rooms. No pets are allowed in the campground (except for approved assistance animals). Full hookup sites include water and a dump station at the site, and 30and/or 50-amp electric hookups. There are only a small number of full hookup sites, available on a first come, first served basis.

There is a 5-15 minute walk from most rooms to the Dining Hall, Library, Museums and meeting rooms. We strongly urge people with health challenges to consult with their physician before registering. Remember to bring a sufficient supply of medications for your time here. Weather: The high desert altitude (6,500 feet) can produce extremely variable weather. Winter and spring temperatures can range from lows of zero or below at night to highs of 70° at midday; be prepared for rain and/or snow.
