Mysticism & the Desert Landscape

Chacoan World Excursion Road Trip

G15CDS611 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,045 Shared Bath: $845

Margaret Guelker

Martha Yates

There is a difference between “knowing about” and “knowing.” You are encouraged to walk the threefold path of mysticism through Purgation (emptying oneself), Illumination (waiting for God’s light) and Unification (becoming oneself through knowing God). Supplementeded with trips to The White Place, Christ in the Desert Monastery and a day of silence, this time in the desert will be a time apart to begin to simply “be.”

Immerse yourself in the Chaco Canyon phenomenon, the mysteries of Chaco, its ancient astronomical observatories, the Great Kivas of Aztec and Casa Rinconada and the Great Houses of Pueblo Bonito and Kin Kletso and much more. Begin with a day of introductory lectures at the Ranch and the opportunity to explore in the afternoon. Then, two days on the road, one day to the ancient observatory of Chimney Rock and Aztec Great House and the next day to Chaco Canyon. The final night will take place at Ghost Ranch for discussion of the week and closure. Also offered September 3-7. See page 55.

Monday–Sunday, June 15-21 Biblical Landscapes of Memory, Hope & Renewal G15CDS631 Private Bath: $1,345 Shared Bath: $1,105 William Brown Scholars have only recently appreciated how the natural landscape of ancient Palestine helped shape the stories and poetry of the Bible. Equally fascinating are the various ways the ancient authors of Scripture described and re-envisioned the land, including the wilderness, from the perspective of God’s work of peace and justice in their midst. Amid the wonder of the high desert, we explore the many ways poets and prophets of the Bible “painted” the natural landscape and our place in it. With their landscapes of memory and hope, we shape our landscapes of renewal for today.

Dreaming the Way Foward Monday, July 13 to Sunday, July19, 2015 Monday–Sunday, July 6-12 I and Thou G15CDS711 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,395 Shared Bath: $1,155 Communal Bath: $1,065 Camping: $720 John Philip Newell Ali Newell Nahum Ward-Lev One of the most important spiritual texts of the 20th century was I and Thou by the Austrian-born Israeli Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber (required reading for the week). It distinguishes between the personal encounter with the Sacred at the heart of all life and the tendency to treat others as mere objects to be used for one’s own ends. As we study, we ask what this great Jewish text has to offer today and consider how each spiritual tradition has a distinct offering for blessing in our lives and world. Our days consist of prayer at the rising of the sun, teaching and sharing in the intimacy of Casa del Sol in the mornings and evenings and rest and silence in the afternoons.

Monday–Sunday, July 13-19 Dreaming the Way Forward G15S721 All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,395 Shared Bath: $1,155 Communal Bath: $1,065 Camping: $720 John Philip Newell Ali Newell David Poole Winona Poole The universe is so amazing that it must have been dreamt into being. And the world is in such a mess, both personally and collectively, that we need to dream the way forward. We need to allow ourselves—as individuals, nations and religions—to imagine ways of seeing and ways of living and relating to one another and the earth that we have never before known.

In this signature week at Ghost Ranch, we ask how our great spiritual traditions—Christian and other—can access the well of the imagination again and thus deepen and renew the blessings that we carry in our lives individually and together! Our days will consist of prayer at the rising of the sun in Ghost Ranch’s Agape Center courtyard, teaching and sharing in the mornings and evenings and rest and silence in the afternoons. The program’s leaders will be John Philip Newell (Author) and Ali Newell (University Chaplain), along with David Poole (Musician) and Winona Poole (Teacher). They are all long-time friends of Ghost Ranch and have worked together creatively through word and song over many summers.

Drawing on the rich landscape of northern New Mexico, we will reflect, specifically, on how the poetics of land shapes imagination, and how imagination itself can be understood as a landscape, where grace becomes real and God is known.

Fall Writing Festival Monday, October 5 to Sunday, October 11, 2015

Monday–Sunday, October 5-11 Oh, the Depth of the Riches! Mining Meaningful Family Stories G15W1011A All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,345 Shared Bath: $1,105 Communal Bath: $1,015 Camping: $670 Adam Booth Storytelling is an art form and practice that is fading from the American lifestyle. The family story, which used to be commonplace, is becoming more difficult to tell and hear as technology and lifestyle shift us into different modes of interaction. This course promotes the importance of listening, preserving stories and telling them in a fashion that is appealing to a wide variety of listeners (your children, your parishioners or anyone who needs a break from the internet!). No experience required, but a desire to share, collect or preserve stories is a must.

Into the Country of Memory—Writing About Life’s Journeys G15W1011C All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,345 Shared Bath: $1,105 Communal Bath: $1,015 Camping: $670 Catherine Watson Whether it is called memoir or travel writing, good first-person writing requires a willingness to reveal one’s feelings. It uses the same skills that a rich life and all rewarding journeys demand: openness to new experiences, an awareness of details and a trustworthy voice. Through in-class exercises, daily writing assignments, guided group discussion and supportive coaching from an experienced writer and teacher, this workshop will help sharpen all those skills. That makes this week a journey of its own.

Heads & Tales: How Will You Flip Your Story G15W1011D All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,345 Shared Bath: $1,105 Communal Bath: $1,015 Camping: $670 Ina Hughs You can flip the word “story” like a coin. Depending on which side lands face up, it can be fiction or non-fiction: a story out of your experience or a story out of your imagination. The skill is in the writing. Work with the elements that make a good story in any genre, including short fiction, memoir, personal narrative, poetry, fantasy. Whatever. We will work off assignments designed to help with character development, setting, movement, dialogue, humor, pathos and the creative use of language, all to make our stories evocative and worthy. All levels of writing are welcome and needed.

“I Dwell in Possibility”: The Life & Language of Poetry G15W1011B All Inclusive, Double Occupancy: Private Bath: $1,345 Shared Bath: $1,105 Communal Bath: $1,015 Camping: $670 Anita Skeen Emily Dickenson begins one of her most famous poems, “I dwell in Possibility–A fairer House than Prose….” What are the possibilities that Dickenson might be referring to here, both for the poet and the poem? When we begin a poem, its possibilities are limitless. Our skills with language, our attentiveness toward the subject, our choices about structure, among other things, will all determine whether or not the poem realizes its potential. Jane Taylor Come spend a week in a small group exploring ways to deepen/expand your writing practice, or perhaps let the week guide you toward a writing practice. What are the creative habits that keep us awake and engaged? In this class, you will find one just for you. Perfect for both beginning and experienced writers of all genres.

We know ourselves and others, in great part, by the work we do. Work is one of the ways we make sense of our world and find—or fail to find—satisfaction in our lives. This workshop on writing stories dealing with work invites its participants to explore the ways in which work, as subject and setting, offers pathways to the understanding of character, culture and environment.

Monday–Monday, November 16-23 Stillpoint The Art of Spiritual Direction G15CDS1131 Please visit website for rates and dates of the other three sessions. Judith Favor Ravi Verma The Stillpoint Formation and Training Program is scheduled to begin with classes held beginning November 2014 through March 2016. “The Spiritual Journey” is a prerequisite for this program. A certificate is awarded at completion. Those who are accepted, will travel to Ghost Ranch for four, one-week residential intensives (two separate weeks each year).

An experienced staff of distinguished spiritual directors will facilitate sessions using roleplays, presentations, discussions, spiritual practices, demonstrations, contemplative exercises and prayer. The Stillpoint program is noted for its engagement and is a practicum. We spend hours practicing the art of spiritual direction with participants and staff so that graduates may experience and perfect their gifts in being spiritually present to others. Participants find that their lives change as their gifts of deep listening and presence emerge.

Winter Solstice in the seasonal cycle is the time for the seeds to rest, when the shortest days pass into the longer, when thanks are given for the change of dark into light. It is a revered time for the Rio Grande pueblos. During this week, you will see the animal dances of the pueblos. Among the possibilities of dances are the Buffalo dance at Jemez Pueblo, the Deer dance at Taos Pueblo, Comanche dance at Tesuque or the Matachines on Christmas Eve at Ohkay-Owinge Pueblo. All-inclusive rate includes accommodation at Casa del Sol, a lovely, peaceful hacienda at Ghost Ranch, and all meals and transportation during the week.
