WELCOME

Dear Reader, round the world, affluent people are becoming more numerous. In the last ten years alone, the number of “ultra high-net-worth individuals” has increased by roughly 60 percent. At the same time, this clientele could not be more heterogeneous. Whether they are part of the old European aristocracy, illustrious Hollywood celebrities, Silicone Valley-based entrepreneurs or Chinese investors, in times of declining interest rates, they are all looking for a piece of luxury real estate as a safe capital investment and a place to retreat to. Since 2007, we have been offering this special group of clients a discreet service in the form of our Engel & Völkers Private Office line of business. Customer service in the top segment has its own set of rules. These clients rarely visit their local Engel & Völkers shop in person to sell a piece of real estate or to find a new property. Particularly discerning customers want personalized client services provided by an international market expert who speaks their language, understands their lifestyle and concerns, and who operates as discreetly as possible. As part of this, they expect services that perfectly match their needs. Our Private Office advisors act as global brokers for exclusive apartments in cities like London and New York, unique chalets in skiing destinations like Gstaad and Aspen and first-class summerhouses in Mallorca, on the Côte d’Azur or in Palm Beach, Florida. Supply is scarce, especially in such hotspots, and so prices are high. It has always been my goal to satisfy our clients’ wishes and to provide them with dream properties via our global network and extensive range of services. With currently over 700 locations in more than 30 countries and 9,000 members of staff, we offer a maximum of know-how, as well as in-depth knowledge of the local markets in the most sought-after regions of the world. As always, you will find the most attractive properties from around the globe in this edition of GG. Sincerely

Happy Heritage … Big names come with even bigger responsibilities. This issue is introducing interesting personalities with world-famous names who are infusing their heritages with fresh, new visions. Like Gabriela Hearst, our cover story heroine, who is married to Austin Hearst, the distinguished publishing family. Her elegant designs of wearable clothes have turned the born Uruguayan into a hot new name in the fashion world. Somewhat less prominently but even more dynamic, Kip Forbes has stepped out of his famous father’s shadow. Malcolm Forbes, who was known for his joie de vivre, flew 800 guests for his 70th birthday to his Moroccan palace in charter jets. Forbes magazine is celebrating its 100th birthday this fall. Kip spoke exclusively to Steffi Kammerer, providing a rare and very personal insight into his unusual life, his relationship to his four siblings and his passion for collecting art. Kiwis are more popular then ever – especially after their clear victory over the Americans in the most competitive sailing race – the America’s Cup. Eva Müller May toured the island nation for us and brought back some amazing tips for an extraordinarily beautiful road trip through New Zealand.

We hope you enjoy our Heritage issue!

Inspired by Fernando Boteros’ work, Gabriela Hearst designed the “Nina” bag – originally for just 20 of her friends. Today, the waiting list for this popular it-bag is so long you have to be patient for months.

For this edition of GG, she traveled to the Scottish Highlands. In stunning Inveraray Castle on Loch Fyne, she talked to the Duke of Argyll, who lives there with his wife and three children (page 54).

SINJA SCHWARZ Sinja Schwarz studied communication design with a focus on photography. For GG, the native of northern Germany traveled to the Scottish Highlands with the production team and was responsible for the styling of the photo shoot at the Duke of Argyll’s residence. The job combined all the things she loves: art, design and nature.

Founded in 1920, Lucian Ercolani’s furniture company has been operating under the name Ercol since 1958 and is today managed by his grandson, Edward Tadros. Graceful wooden furniture is the British company’s hallmark. Mr. Tadros, you run the family business your grandfather founded nearly a century ago. What does the company

My grandfather was very “Italian.” Lucian had his mind set on founding a furniture dynasty. I am very proud of the fact that the company is doing so well and will celebrate its 100th anniversary soon. My son has been assisting me as our head of international sales for six years now. I also have three grandchildren, so there is already a fifth generation, but they are all still babies. I am determined to keep the company a privately owned family business; one that will continue to grow and continue to manufacture great, fit-for-purpose furniture. mean to you?

Is it difficult to run a company with such a strong legacy, or does that spur you on? Our legacy is very

inspiring, but also very demanding. It is a precious thing, which we are incredibly fortunate to have. It gives us the unique opportunity to further refine our designs, which have been around for many decades, so that our furniture is relevant today, and will continue to be relevant in the future.

Some Ercol pieces are quite traditional, others a bit more modern. What do they all have in com-

They are all connected by our company’s DNA. Sometimes our legacy is reflected in the more traditional items, but more and more often it also manifests itself in our modern pieces. We took a conscious decision to become more contemporary, because we want our furniture to be relevant to today’s consumers. All our pieces are largely handmade – especially when it comes to bending and gluing the wood – and their manufacture involves many stages of production. mon?

4

Over the last few years you have started working with deAzumi. How do you choose your collaborators? It is great fun to work with excellent furniture designers, and choosing who to collaborate with is quite a personal thing. They are designers I trust and have known for many years. They also create pieces of furniture that respect our legacy, while at the same time enhancing the Ercol range with new ideas.

7

6 8

Who had the biggest influence on you and your work?

Probably my uncle Lucian, my grandfather’s eldest son. We were very close. Like his father, my uncle was a brilliant production engineer with an incredible talent for efficient and innovative furniture making. The “old man,” as my grandfather was lovingly known, was a great designer. My uncle Lucian was less of a designer, but he promoted and fostered the appreciation of great design in our company.

KIP FORBES GABRIELA HEARST DUKE OF ARGYLL

Christopher “Kip” Forbes inherited his love of collecting from his father Malcolm. His passion: Napoleon III, here an oil portrait.

The Forbes Legacy At times, Malcolm Forbes owned more FabergÊ eggs than the Kremlin. He celebrated his 70th birthday with the who’s who of politics and show biz at his palace in Morocco, and he made Forbes a worldfamous business magazine. Kip Forbes and his four siblings have continued their famous father’s legacy and are still busy divvying up their inheritance. A visit to Far Hills, New Jersey, where the Forbes family has resided for TEXT: Steffi Kammerer nearly 70 years.

A collector’s pride and joy: Victorian England and French emperor Napoleon III have accompanied Kip Forbes throughout his life.

“The happy medium,” says Christopher Forbes, whom everyone calls “Kip.” He is sophisticated, polite, charming – and seems unusually content and relaxed for someone this wealthy. Kip picks me up from the railway station in a small car; later, he makes tea in the kitchen, looking around for cookies. He is an art historian, an expert in English 19th century paintings. His main job is that of vice chairman of the Forbes media group and he is always on the road. In between trips to Paris and Jakarta, he returns to the place he has lived all his life: the 70-acre Timberfield estate in Far Hills, New Jersey. e is the third of five children.

Seven houses form part of an estate that is so vast you have to take a car to get from one house to the other. Malcolm Forbes passed away in the largest of its buildings in 1990 while taking an afternoon nap after returning from a trip to London. Kip’s father – never one for half measures – had chosen the rural environs of Timberfield as his sanctuary. Here, he would mow the lawn on weekends after flying across Egypt in his own, sphinx-shaped hot-air balloon. A father like this can drive his children to despair. However, just like Kip Forbes, his three brothers – Steve, Robert and Tim – and his sister Moira are grounded, industrious individuals. Steve ran for U.S. president twice, but never made it past the primaries. Kip, on the other hand, has a title that one cannot make a bid for: he is an officer of the French Legion of Honor. This is how the French government thanked him for his long-standing support for the Louvre museum. As a member of the board of the Ellis Island Foundation, Kip also helps to preserve the Statue of Liberty, and has been supporting the reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace. He once sat on the boards of half a dozen prestigious muse-

ums, but has slowly been scaling back his involvement. These days, “letting go” is the new family motto. In fact, they’ve been downsizing for years. As a result, the famous Forbes magazine, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this fall, was able to survive the recent crises. The family has sold the 172,000-acre ranch in Colorado, the Moroccan palace where Malcolm Forbes hosted the party of the century, the “Highlander” yacht, the huge, old residence in London, 75,000 toy soldiers and a private island in the Pacific. Added to that, the family’s unique collection of Fabergé eggs, which sold for 100 million dollars. Kip’s Victorian paintings also had to go, and their sale raised 27 million dollars. At the time, he told a newspaper that he would not be attending the auction because it was all too sad. Nowadays he is good at letting go. Last spring, he parted with his personal treasure, his Napoleon III collection: 2,000 works of art, manuscripts and photographs. Kip started collecting objects connected to Napoleon III when he was a teenager, after his father had given him a portrait of the former French emperor as a present. The family is, however, planning to hold on to

It had been falling into disrepair for many years when Malcolm Forbes bought it in 1970. Kip refurbished the building over the course of two decades and now stays there roughly five times a year. The rest of the time, he lives in Timberfield with his wife of 43 years, Astrid, who is a scion of the German aristocratic family Heyl zu Herrnsheim. Their daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren live in the neighboring house. In 1989 your father dedicated his book More Than I Dreamed to you. He wrote: “To son Christopher, whose friendship, love, genius and wit have been instrumental in making this life more than I dreamed.”

My father had a special relationship with each of us children. Because each of us inherited a little bit of him. More Than I Dreamed was about a lifetime of collecting. That’s why that book was dedicated to me – because of the shared passion. I was very touched. I had no idea – one day he gave me the proof of the page and I, of course, burst into tears. Please tell us about your special relationship.

Did you find it difficult to part with some of those things? In the first sales after my father died, it was difficult. Now it is almost cathartic, one almost cannot wait to get rid of things. It sort of feeds on itself. At first I was sentimental: this belonged to this person and this to this person, but now I just think weg, weg, weg (GG: that’s German for “out, out, out”). You had some serious festivities at this house. The 70th birthday of the magazine was at Timberfield and yes, that was heavy duty. There were 40 or 50 helicopters parked in the big field. For the magazine’s 75th birthday we went to Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall and former President Reagan was there with President Gorbachev. This year will be the big one: the 100th anniversary of Forbes. How will you celebrate?

There will be a special issue of the magazine and stuff on the web. And then I assume in September there will be a special event. When you think about your childhood, what

his unique and listed Bauhaus residence at a prime location in Jena’s ‘Landgrafenviertel’ quarter was designed and erected in 1928 by Walter Gropius himself, the founder of the Bauhaus movement. It is known as the ‘Haus Zuckerkandl’, built for Theresa Zuckerkandl from Vienna, whose granddaughter lived here right up until the late 1990s. Just some of the amazing highlights of this archetypal modernist home are the ‘reform kitchen’ by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, original ceiling lights, floor coverings and colour tones, and a number of furniture pieces by Richard Riemerschmid. A new slant on storage: The “Hash” bookshelf made of powdered steel is very versatile thanks to its variable modules. By Line Studio, price on request.

A collection of stunning failures: on 192 pages, Biamonti provides 25 examples of contemporary projects that architects and clients alike have made a royal mess of. In the middle of China, there’s a half-finished version of Paris; the abandoned Japanese island Hashima has featured in a James Bond movie; and near Beijing, a Disneyland-inspired theme park called Wonderland has been left to rot.

Finally! A survival guide to office life. In this book, Molly Erman shares the knowledge she acquired in countless hours spent between the computer and the communal kitchen during ten years working in NYC. Her tips range from never sending passive-aggressive emails and how to do an office workout (using documents as weights) to falling in love with somebody from work. (It’s better not to, she says, but you already guessed that, right?)

This is what interests video artist Douglas Gordon. His film about Mekas’ fight for survival before and after 1944 is making its debut at the Documenta 14 in Kassel and tells the story of the time Mekas spent in a labor camp and DP camp in Germany, as well as his subsequent emigration to New York.

Its ground floor houses a Louis Vuitton boutique, the upper floor contains office space and Eichardt’s Penthouse, which is decorated like a private apartment and can be rented for ten thousand dollars a night. On the morning of my last day, I was scheduled to take a helicopter ride across the fjords in the west of the island. Sadly, the trip was cancelled due to low stratus. So the Matakauri Lodge, roughly 10 minutes by car from Queenstown, was my last stop in this exciting country. Decorated in alpine chic, but with real Picassos on the walls, the lodge fits in well with its mountainous surroundings. Over lunch, the manager Emanuel Grosch, who is originally from Munich, told me a Maori tale about the ueenstown used to have a reputation warrior Matakauri, after whom the lodge as the center of back-packing and is named. The last two days still lay ahead, but my fascination with this country was to intensify even more. Hulbert House, a Victorian villa built in 1888 and totally renovated by a Japanese investor in 2016, has six guest rooms. The villa is located on the shores of 80-kilometer long, 400-meter deep Lake Wakatipu. Its interior design is retro and eclectic; its carpets feature Japanese motifs. The region is shielded from the chilly western winds by the Southern Alps. In the summertime, it is thus roughly two degrees warmer than on North Island. In winter, it has been known to snow here.

odernist architects pursued one vision:

they wanted to rebuild entire cities in the countryside. Roughly 100 years later, the opportunity presented itself: international greats like Lord Norman Foster and Manfredi Nicoletti have already designed buildings for Astana, the ever-expanding capital of Kazakhstan located on the wide-open steppes. This year, the city hosts the Expo world fair, which required further new buildings – such as a railway station. The contract for the latter project was won by Istanbul-based Tabanlıo g˘ lu Architects. Their design combines transportation, public spaces, sidewalks and a park. The roof of the building consists of three continuous, wave-shaped metal plates complemented by glass segments. The self-supporting structure is made of lightweight steel and mirrors the direction of the railway tracks below it. Because of the extreme climatic conditions in Astana, the building is primarily designed as a shelter from the elements. Murat Tabanlıog˘ lu says: “To me, good architecture entails buildings being very well integrated into their surroundings and into the city in general. And of course, people also have to be comfortable in them.”

Our source of inspiration are the impressions that our world has to offer in all its variety – such as the colours of Nepal, classic carpet patterns and 21st century art. A carpet is more than just an item of furniture to us. It stands for individuality, wellbeing and harmony. We see it as a connecting element in a room. A handmade piece of art for the fifth wall, the floor.
