WELCOME Dear Reader, ith the purchase of my vacation property in Mallorca, I fulfilled a personal dream over 20 years ago. As a child, I used to spend time on the Spanish island with my parents and my brother every summer. Mallorca has become my second home. I love the climate, the culture, the warmth of the people and the stunning landscape. In my finca on the southwestern coast, boasting views of the Tramuntana Mountains and the sea, I have found a sanctuary. It is where I enjoy tranquility and find inspiration to develop new ideas for the company. For our clients, too, the purchase of a vacation property makes a fervent wish come true. Around the world, second home ownership has been on the increase. On the one hand, this is due to the current low interest rate environment. On the other, exclusive real estate in desirable areas represents a stable investment, or a crisis-proof retirement plan. The demand for vacation properties in Germany is undiminished. Especially sought after are second homes on its North and Baltic Sea coasts, and in its Alpine region. In high-end vacation spots like the island of Sylt, property prices have reached levels that keep pace with those in top locations in German cities. In other parts of Europe, traditional locations offer the best investment potential. These include the Mediterranean, with islands like Mallorca, Ibiza, Sardinia and Malta, as well as the Côte d’Azur and ski resorts in Switzerland and Austria. Here, exceptional properties not infrequently fetch “collector’s prices.” Buyers can find more moderate price levels along the coastal regions of the Spanish mainland and in Portugal. In Italy, second homes around its northern lakes and in Tuscany are in equally strong demand. Vacation homes in established U.S. destinations like Florida or California are a very good investment, too. There is a simple rule that applies everywhere: the more exclusive the location, the scarcer the supply and the safer the investment. Scandinavian style rocks! It was on a trip to Antwerp that I noticed her label for the very first time: Anine Bing. Her boutique on Drukkerijstraat is one of eight flagship stores worldwide that the former blogger and model from Denmark will have opened by the end of this year. She also supplies more than 300 stores around the world with her cool and wearable collection. For all this success she only used social media as a marketing tool. Who is this woman that is leading the fashion industry with her fresh ideas? We were curious, and only a few weeks later I was able to meet Anine in Los Angeles, her home. A super charming, surprisingly genuine and modest woman. A loving and dedicated mother and fierce businesswoman who is all about the Scandinavian motto “Less is more.” The Swedish designer Cecilia Bönström is behind Zadig & Voltaire, which was launched by her husband Thierry Gillier, grandson of the Lacoste founder. The power duo lives in Paris with their four children and a stunning collection of contemporary art. The history of the Danish company Vipp is that of a true family business. In 1939, Holger Nielsen invented a pedal bin for his wife’s hair salon. The chicest trashbin to date is part of the constant collection at MoMA in N.Y.C. and today, Vipp also creates kitchens and furniture and has even produced a very modern prefab home (page 54). GAËLLE LE BOULICAUT & JEREMY CALLAGHAN Gaëlle is from France and Jeremy was born in Papua New Guinea. The French photographer and the journalist, a former actor who has worked with Ryan Gosling, met in New Zealand. Today, the couple live in Brittany with their two children. For GG they met the movers and shakers of the Zadig & Voltaire label, Thierry Gillier and Cecilia Bönström.

LEJLA OUWEJAN Leijla was born in Moscow, raised in Germany and has lived in Marbella since 1999. A trained office administrator, she ended up in the real estate industry – and at E&V Marbella West. Among the properties she now looks after is an estate that once belonged to Prince (starting on page 72).

HELENA MICHALKE Few people know Hamburg like Helena does. She was born there and lived in half a dozen neighborhoods before moving to the wonderfully rural Volksdorf area with her husband and two children. She loves the North Sea and going skiing. At GG, she looks after the Engel & Völkers license partners.

STEFFI KAMMERER Steffi Kammerer is a freelance journalist and also a filmmaker (My Friend Rockefeller). She lives in New York and Berlin, together with her son, and writes for manager magazin and the Bertelsmann Foundation, among others. In February, Steffi joined GG as copy editor. For this edition, she met Jette and Kasper Egelund, the co-owners of the Vipp family business. Mother and son impressed her just as much as summery, laid-back Copenhagen.

SARA DENMAN Sara Denman, who originally hails from Sweden, has been working as a make-up artist since 1991. She says: “My father was a photographer, so I practically grew up in the studio.” However, she only embarked on the move to L.A. once her son had left home. Sara met Anine Bing, with whom she regularly collaborates, 15 years ago in Thailand.

That is when they come together here for Burning Man – ravers, rappers, stars and screwballs, performance artists, freaks, billionaires and hippies. Art & food In Versailles, he is making a powerful waterfall rain down from the sky (until October). With his “Little Sun” project, he wants to bring light to people who still live without electricity. Ólafur Elíasson likes playing with physical phenomena. Born in Denmark and raised in Iceland, today the famous artist splits his time between Berlin and Copenhagen. In his Berlin studio, fresh food is cooked every day. Mr. Elíasson, at your studio in Berlin you have four chefs who serve freshly prepared hot lunches every day. The ingredients are sourced from local organic farms and your roughly 100 employees all eat to-

gether. That sounds like quite a logistical effort, why did you introduce this?

It is important to me that we all get together once a day to exchange ideas. Not everyone uses lunch to talk about their projects, of course, and sometimes you do need a break from them. What I am more interested in is turning lunch breaks into a communal time that fosters creativity. The way I see it, we connect through the cooking and the food. We serve whatever the produce crate from the organic farm contains, together with copious amounts of herbs. Everything here except the summer barbecue is vegetarian. Part of the reason for this is to do with sustainability. It is quite obvious that we cannot keep eating as much meat as the average Dane or German currently does. If we want to stop climate change, we have to start with our own habits. Apart from that, certain dishes are impossible to make if you want 100 people to eat at the same time. I like it when the cooks try something new every day, and surprise us with diverse and simplified dishes. I once invited René Redzepi, the chef at Noma to come down here. He prepared a dish made of milk skin, grass, herbs and flowers. The herbs actually came from the meadow that the cow had grazed on. of food that is served?

I think that you can draw parallels between the industrial production of food and the art market – not the art world, that’s something different. To my mind, art and cookery are languages. Art is my language – I have learned to use it to express myself. But I’m a lousy cook, which is why I don’t express myself with particular precision when I cook. In order to be a great cook you have to learn that kind of language. But you also have to have something to say, just like in art. resources or ecology …?

A career woman & a passionate mom – Anine Bing launched her label around the same time as her children were born. Her daughter Bianca is 5, her son Benjamin is 3. Anine: “I adore being a mother and would love to have more children!�



Who is the typical Anine Bing woman? “My main customer is between 25 and 45. I want my label to offer something to everyone.�

Anine Bing finds inspiration at flea markets and when she’s traveling. “I love going to Bali or to countries like Brazil, where my grandmother was born. When I design my collections, I always make sure the new pieces go with the previous ones.”

The sun shines little step. My husband, who was in fashion retail for many years, had brightly the moment Anine Bing steps into lots of experience in fashion production. For the Dane, whose BIG studio has offices in Copenhagen, New York and London, building ecologically does not mean foregoing comfort or joie de vivre. Clean lines – a design tradition It all started with a metal pedal bin. Today, the VIPP product portfolio ranges from a dishwashing brush to a prefabricated house. The latter is the brainchild of CEO Kasper Egelund, the grandson of the company’s founder. Like every Vipp product it is straightforward and elegant, every detail well thoughtthrough. A change of perspective: Jette Egelund and her daughter-in-law Heidi regularly turn things upside down at yoga. It was important to company boss Kasper Egelund (pictured below with his daughter Mie) to find the right setting for the shelter: close to the water and with an unspoiled view of the shoreline. After a year-long search, the perfect location was found in Sweden: on a lake and surrounded by tall trees. The family’s actual vacation home is on Denmark’s west coast, about a 90-minute drive from Copenhagen. This is where Jette spends vacations with her five grandchildren. She rarely sees her daughter Sofie’s two children the rest of the year as they live in the USA.

A LIFE IN ART The couple behind the Parisian fashion label Zadig & Voltaire are all about opposites. They are cool and laid back and unbelievably chic – high-end and rock-and-roll. Cecilia Bönström from Sweden and Thierry Gillier from France raise their four children in a 19th-century apartment filled with cutting-edge art. at the home of Thierry Gillier and Cecilia Bönström, as they would be in any household with four children and two working parents. Yet breakfast – spilled milk and all – is served each day on a piece of furniture that collectors would pay through the nose for. This family is keeping it very real and so a table, even if it is by Charlotte Perriand, is first and foremost, just a table. “It’s my favorite piece in the whole house,” says Cecilia. “It’s beautiful and practical. In many ways it reminds me of a Swedish table. We like things to be very simple; volumes that are pure. We want to be able to place and replace paintings, move them around as we feel works. Sometimes they are hung from the walls but often they are simply on the floor. It’s not art as decoration but art as a way of life.” Gillier and Bönström are the founder and creative director, respectively, behind Zadig & Voltaire, the label that made cashmere cool and defiantly shoved rock chic into the face of the fashion establishment. Cecilia Bönström, a Swedish-born former model, had often driven past a particular building in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, admired the wisteria clinging to its façade, its irrepressible lifeforce persisting as it twisted its way around the window and through the balconies, and quietly wondered: who lives in this place? It once belonged to Baron Haussmann, the architect chosen by Napoleon III to modernize Paris, who used the 19th-century residence as his garçonnière, or bachelor’s quarters. “It was such a fantasy-like vision. And then,” she says, “twenty-four years after moving to Paris, the place became mine.” ornings are a bit hectic

It’s a sign of the times. Everything old is new again. A clear glass divider between the kitchen and main living areas brought light deep into the the interior and added a loft-like contrast. “Every element of the apartment was revisited – it’s like it was redone, top to bottom. It was a job that fell somewhere between restoration and creation.” The real challenge, however, was to turn the flat into a home for Gillier’s significant collection of contemporary art, which includes pieces by Cy Twombly, Dan Flavin, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Damien Hirst. “We did an enormous amount of work to ensure the lighting would be right,” Stanislas says. Her solution: a custom-designed miniature lamp slightly more than an inch long that is integrated into the ceiling so it’s virtually invisible. Thierry Gillier, who studied art at Bard College in the U.S., has over the years amassed a collection of very impressive pieces that occupy the home like old friends. “This apartment, for me, is a loft, made to accommodate modern works, but its ancient context assures the building will always be the master,” says Gillier. “The contents are in perpetual motion,” he adds, referring to the art works contained in what is in itself a noble piece of architecture.

In the luxury segment, Richard Mille is considered a young brand. Its first German boutique recently opened in the Bavarian capital, Munich.

whose prices can compete with those of a sports car is growing steadily. The French brand Richard Mille is experiencing – and benefiting from – this demand. “I have no idea how large our market actually is,” says company founder Richard Mille, 65. “I only know that currently, it just keeps growing.” The Frenchman, who has had a long career in fine watchmaking, founded his own label just before the turn of the millennium, something he says he had dreamt of doing for many years. He wanted to create uncomplicated watches that were a little more modest than those of his competitors. To achieve this, Mille puts his trust in hightech materials and technologies that are also being employed in the development of airplanes and racing cars, such as carbon fiber, special ceramics and highgrade titanium, for example. The company, which has already produced about 25,000 watches (average price € 180,000), has now opened its first boutique in Germany on Maximilianstraße in Munich, one of the city’s most exclusive shopping boulevards. Mille says: “Our products are contemporary and full of respect for the fine art of watchmaking.” he market for watches

reate architecture for its own sake? That kind of attitude is alien to Snøhetta. The Norwegian architectural fim, founded in Oslo by Craig Dykers and Kjetil Trædal Thorsen in 1989, relates every single one of its designs to its context. “Obviously we always want to create something unique,” says Thorsen, “but only if it arises naturally from the circumstances.” That applies just as much to the recently opened extension to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as it does to the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin with a block of granite at its center, the new building for the Library of Alexandria, the Culture Center at Ground Zero in Manhattan or Oslo Opera House with its accessible roof. Snøhetta, which meanwhile has branches in New York, San Francisco and Innsbruck, doesn’t so much have a typical style as a style all its own. Its interdisciplinary collaboration with creatives from other professions, including landscape designers and artists, plays a major role in its work – all over the world.
