Letter from the Editor Colin Ingram

I have a nightmare; that Martin Luther King Jr.’s boys never grew up to be judged by the content of their character. We know that a man should be judged by his inner being, not the outward appearance. However, in terms of fashion, I believe that what a man wears says something about the inner recesses of his imagination. How do you relay who you are? What a person wears sends a message. You communicate something about yourself, about who you are, where you come from, and what you believe. What we wear fashions who we are, or does who we are determine our fashion? At least, what a man wears is readable. Fashion is like mysterious Egyptian hieroglyphics: interpretable. Whether others read of you “I’m a stud” or “Follow me, I’m the leader,” you should

never read, “I have no idea who I am or what I am doing.” Fashion is something you own. Confidence is key my friends, and if it’s new it’s not because you changed. You always believed it. Martin Luther King Jr. believed all men are created equal, and he took a stand. You and we at Gallant stand up and stand out. King stood up for what he believed, and people followed. In fact, courageous men stood in the face of riots and abuse against them because they believed people should be treated equally. Even though I believe fashion can be judged, a man’s character should not be judged by his appearance. Readers, this issue of Gallant proclaims unity among diversity. Gallant is all about unity. We’re all in this together.

Fashion The Comeback by Tommy Tran

Fashion trends have a tendency of repeating themselves every other generation. What once seemed cool to our parents now seems like a disaster, yet somehow our grandparents have the classiest, up to date, look. A perfect example is the bow tie. The bow tie goes all the way back to the 1700’s where Europeans would use them as scarves to hold together the top of their collared shirts. Eventually it became a symbol of the upper class and survived throughout many generations. Nowadays most people would associate the bow tie with James Bond, tuxedos, and prestigious professors. Yet suddenly we are seeing this fancy piece of neck wear being integrated into a sporty, more casual look. No longer is it plain or conservative like we saw in our grandparents. We now see this necktie coming back with a flare of modern touch. High color contrasts, crazy patterns, and even unique branding are all a part of the modern bow tie. We can now see the bow tie rocked with khaki shorts and sunglasses, something that a few years ago would look absurd. There’s even some who are courageous enough to slip one on with a button down shirt and jeans. No longer is this accessory just for a spy dodging bullets, tuxedos on prom night, or the mind of a scholar. It is now for the common man to look “high fashion”.

Grooming Fashion The Pompadour Statement by Colin Ingram

How-to The backbone to the pompadour is the haircut. Top length of the hair should be from four to seven inches. The side length should be from a 1/8 inch to 2 inches. For a modern look, go with ¾ inch or less on the sides. This produces a clean, fresh look.

The Pomp The pompadour, or pomp, demands a second look, turning street-goers into onlookers. The bold style makes a statement. The hair, fashionably styled and controlled, becomes almost its own entity. Many fear the maintenance of the masterwork hairstyle. Yet, the hair is coming back, as if resurrected from the 1950’s. However, this time it’s not just rock and pop kings. Anyone who wants to assert themselves should try the pomp. The top hair stands tidily together rising tall above the forehead contrasting with a short length on the side. Some prefer a messy looking pompadour, with broken strands or a disheveled look. City slickers are best holding to the sleek, clean pomp. Multiple side cut options are available. A fade stands out from the common and mundane quarter inch length. Keep it short and urban, otherwise, with long sides, the pomp ends up looking like a Travolta slick-back.

10   GALLANT FALL 2014

If the haircut is the backbone, then your daily styling is the extremities. Start with damp or wet hair. Begin to preform the hair with a comb directly back. Next add product to your hair, about a quarter inch palm sized dab, either pomade or a paste. Slick the top hair back with your fingers for hold, and then use the comb to pull the bangs upward. You will need to hold the tips of the bangs in place towards the cowlick at the back of the head. Pull the hair up with the comb with quick strokes of the wrist. The second part of the styling is combing the hair from the sides over to one side. Finally, touch up the front mound on top of the forehead ensuring a clean, slick look.

Fashion Q & A With Morgan Mason Q: Why do girls ALWAYS want the bad boys? A Girls always want the bad boys because they want the chase. Every girl whether they admit it or not wants to be that ONE girl to change a bad boy into a hopeless romantic. Every girl wants to be treated well and respected but if you make it easy for them, girls will walk all over you, that’s why the bad guys always get the girl and the nice guys get walked over.

Q: How come girls over analyze EVEVERYTHING? A: Onee reason us women over think everything it because that is the way our brain works. Women naturally over think things, girls don’t realize how stupid some of you guys are (No offense to you guys but it’s true) We tend to over look the things you say how you act and everything that you do. So before you make a mistake thinkg about it.

have messed up or what you forgot recently, a birthday, anniversary, date and take the blame yourself. If you take the blame and try to figure it out she will think that you care and you are being a man because you “admitted” that you were wrong.

Q: How do you get a girl to stop talking? A: Lets be real here, all girls love to talk it could be something meaningless or important. So men either way you have to listen or at least look like you are listening. If your girl is babbling, going on and on and you do not want to listen, just look like you are listening. If you look like you are listening well than she will think that you are listening and never question it and you will get brownie points. Just stare at her and keep nodding your head until the story is over.

Q: What if my girlfriend is flirting with other guys when I’m staninright next to her? Q; What does “Nothing” actually mean? A: When a girl answers you will “nothing” it means that there is something wrong probably something you did or did not realize that you did wrong. When a girl says that immediately think back to how you could

12   GALLANT FALL 2014

A: If girls flirt with their guy friends in front of their boyfriends, it usually doesn’t mean anything except that they’ve been friends with that guy longer then you have been their boyfriend. Don’t get offended. Maybe the chance she is, leave her and knock out the other guy. Simple as that.

Q: How to escape the friend zone? A: Guys I’m going to be honest here, the friend zone is not a good place to be in, especially if this has been your zone for quiet some time. 1 Make sure that she would even consider you because if you look like a brother to her you will end up looking like a fool and ruining a great friendship. 2. Talk about another girl to her someone who is way out of your league that wants you watch her reaction. If she gets jealous than you know that you can leave the friend zone. 3. Next take another girl on a date and don’t tell her a lot about it because friends share how the date went she will consider you even more of a friend if you go to her for advice. 4. After jealousy arises flirt with her, talk differently and act different around her than ever before and watch how she will change the way she responds and treats you. 5. Then start slow with casual touches such as the arm, back and leg.

have been waiting for.

Q: How to get a girl that is considered “out of your league”? A: 1. Be confident, nobody wants a man who is sensitive and does not know how to be a man and take charge 2. Be yourself, don’t pretend to be this super cool macho man because girls are smart and will realize you are a phonie and leave you. 3. Do not try too hard, she will think you are clingy and needy and wont even go on a date with you. 4. Do not be a jerk either cause you will end up screwing yourself over in the end. 5. No cheesy pick up lines, that is lame and very middle school don’t bother 6. Show interest in personality, and don’t go for the super nice guy act but treat that women thway you would want your mom or sister treated.

6. Finally, if she is responding well to all of these moves, make your move! Ask her on a date or go in for that first spark-flying kiss you

Music Artist Spotlight by Tommy Tran

Randy Scott Carroll was born in Ohio, moved to a small town in West Virginia by age 5, and then to Philadelphia at age 10. He eventually went to college in Virginia. This sandy-haired musician started writing music nearly a decade ago, when he had just begun high school. Earlier on he was strongly supported by his friends who encouraged him to publicly perform some of his art. Reluctantly, he began to, and many people fell in love with the melodies dancing from his fingertips. Most would agree with Randy when he describes his music as acoustic, folk, and soul. Randy can be found on stage with only himself and his acoustic guitar. His arrangements have a folk twang to them, but the most interesting element is the soul.

16   GALLANT FALL 2014

“Soul. That’s the element in the formula that transcends a song from good to great. The human element. I try my hardest to put my soul in my music.” - Randy Scott Carroll Like many artists Randy writes from a personal part of himself and typically shares the pieces closest to his heart. In drawing inspiration from literally everything around him, his music reflects not only his creative spirit but also captures the heart of creativity itself. Randy began to fall in love with the creative process and this passion would eventually be instilled in Randy in all aspects of his life. Randy is an adventurer to say the least. His music has captured a small portion of some of the experiences. He has traveled across the country multiple times. Randy’s partner in crime is his dog, Oliver, his faithful and loving companion that has joined him on many of the shenanigans.

After a few years in Virginia, Randy moved out to Arkansas, but continuously had a burning passion to share his ideas with the world. Randy, as most artists do, picked up a new trade to channel his creativity, podcasting. Enthusiastically, he began hosting his own podcasts at Prismatic Radio. His podcasts have been met with a positive review as he continues to write music. Currently he is making his move to New York City to chase the dream.

Neighborhood

Main In Manayunk by Colin Ingram

Manayunk is a place of yuppies. It’s a northwestern Philadelphia neighborhood of fashionable, young professionals. Manayunk is the urban manifestation of the American Dream for modern millennials. Such a locality spawns the high life as well as nightlife. Work for the week, and live for the weekend. Socialize, party, and eat in this fresh neighborhood. It’s fancy, new and fine, building an eccentric rapport with visitors. It’s the perfect place for a goodtime getaway.

stimulating aspiration. Sprinkled with the must haves such as Starbucks and attracting major city-select restaurants such as Mad River and Kildares, Manayunk also hosts its own local pizazz such as the restaurant Derek’s. There’s also a beauty salon called Salon L’ Etoile with a spa that might suit a date. Walking the jumbled streets of historic cobblestone to Main Street, visitors quickly realize the modern flare of the timeworn neighborhood.

The neighborhood is in the city limits of Philadelphia just a few miles north of center city. It’s a convenient commute for residents and short trip for visitors. It sits just upstream of the Philadelphia Art Museum and famed Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River. With access to center city business and jobs, Manayunk is the breeding ground of those with well-off jobs.

Manayunk thrives with nightlife due to its many bars and restaurants, and large-sweeping young population. Nightlife rages in the bars. Many of the bars have built-in dancing floors. Kildare’s, a tight-on-space restaurant, has a dancing floor built in for weekend nights such as this Friday night as I am perusing town. Its small dancing floor stuffed in the mainframe of the restaurant, perhaps sacrificing seating space, dons the importance of appealing to nightlife on the thrilling Main Street Manayunk. Kildare’s, an Irish pub, has an excellent buffalo shrimp dish that I tried. Its website at www.kildaresirishpub. com deservedly states, “Our staff exudes the natural warmth and good-hearted ambiance of the Irish, who are sure to keep your stomachs, and pints, full to your heart’s content.” The

It’s a place that merges young spirit amongst old-time residential structure. Manayunk is a young-oriented and popping neighborhood set against the backdrop of housing jammed on the hill leading up from the Schuylkill River. The neighborhood teems with wealthy yuppies yet fosters affordable affluence. It’s a dream spot for the post college graduate as a place

18   GALLANT FALL 2014

service there does indeed seem sincere. According to Kildare’s website, most of the interior design is shipped from Ireland. Manayunk presents other bars as options too. As unique as Kildare’s is, make sure to try others. All the options are easily seen as stimulating for the many young professionals reputed to be there. As the neighborhood is easily known for the young twenty-somethings, evidence of family life is present in the community as well. The rest of Manayunk lies under a blanket of charm, with Main Street buzzing at the lowest part of the hill, sporting the river, and scrunched between the cliffs a few blocks uphill that run parallel with the upper Manayunk Street. The town, this night lies under a blanket of magical anticipation. During the day, Manayunk presents the opportunity of exploring the commonplace essence of day-to-day life. Yet, this charming neighborhood is speckled with impressive features such as the large, towering stone building of St. John the Baptist church. Glimpsing upon Manayunk from the Schuylkill Expressway across the river, drivers and passengers notice this standout building protruding high above the surrounding townhouses and buildings from their window. Standing at street level next to the church

one can look up at its tower. You can gape at it, wondering how you can get into the tower lookout, imagining that you’re Edward from Assassin’s Creed free climbing up the stone tower. Across Rector Street from the church is Pretzel Park. A fun little place to go fooling around in, pretending you’re a little kid on the tree-covered playground. Yet, it shows the daily attributes of the neighborhood as young mothers take their children there. Thus, proving the existence of families in Manayunk. The area offers a pleasant existence. But Manayunk is about the night. It attracts largely college students and young professionals amidst its late night crowds. “Bars under stars” is what Manayunk screams. You can hear the bar music raging from the street. Manayunk became the place of the Yuppie in the 80s and 90s. Enveloping the extravagance of the yuppie wealth and the vivacious nightlife of center city in one place. Manayunk is the spot for meeting ladies, discovering fashion, grabbing grub, and wylin’ out at the pub.

Feature THE GALLANT MAN by Tommy Tran

A gallant man is defined by many honorable traits and is one to be admired. These are the men we look to as leaders in our society. They aren’t necessarily the loudest, or the strongest, but it’s their mere presence that impacts the world around them. It is this man who confidently wears a suit and tie everyday despite the stereotypes about today’s youth. He is the one who stands in the light of criticism for he knows that the only way to avoid controversy is to be nothing extraordinary. He is a lover, a fighter, but most importantly a champion of American culture. Have you ever chased a dream? I don’t mean merely follow a dream but I mean truly pursue one with every essence of your being. For those of you who know what I am talking about, there’s a moment in every dreamer’s life where he tastes defeat. Without a doubt, if you strive for anything greater than yourself at some point in time you will fail. But the question is what will you do in the face of failure? What will you choose to do, say, think, when all the odds seemed stacked against you? Who will you be when the obstacles seem to tower over everything and anything you have ever accomplished?

22   GALLANT FALL 2014

I can’t tell you what to do, say, or think, nor can I say who you will become when you face the greatest challenges of your life. I can however tell you what a gallant man will do. Being attentive in nature he will embrace his failure. Whether it be his own mistake or nature working against him. He will brush the dirt off his suit, the grime that covered him when he fell off from his path to success. He will take a deep breath, a moment of silence, to envision everything he wishes to attain. Motivated by his original intents he then will immediately playback every detail of every moment of every single day from the start of his journey ‘til today. He will evaluate himself, analyzing the situations he put himself in and decisions he made. There will be much debate inside of himself, trying to pinpoint the exact moment where things did not go according to plan. He takes responsibility for his own actions, even though it would be easier to claim the world is conspiring against him. This man will stand up and smile knowing that he must now work harder than ever before. It’s because he knows not only what failure tastes like but he knows what it takes to reach his dreams.

Fearless in his endeavors, in the work place, in his love life, in his home, on the streets of the big city surrounded my millions of people, or in the empty park. His mind, his heart, his very soul is focused on what means the most to him. Greatness is the only option. There is no such thing to this man as anything short of utter eminence. For he has recognized long ago that it is not who is, but who he could be. With the

bar set so high it almost seems unreachable, he trudges slowly towards this goal. People around him see his work ethic and acknowledge him. While some are inspired to seek after their own ambitions, others hate him out of their own insecurities. He pays them no mind, for he has no energy to waste on hating back nor the time to act petty feelings.

He is a man who defines himself. A man who defines his fate. Look around you. The world is a battlefield full of men with valor. They are our entrepreneurs, our writers, our law enforcers, our pastors, our presidents, they are the American men dedicated to something greater than themselves. These

are the men every mother hopes their son grows up to be. They are the modern day renaissance men. They are world changers and world savers. They are the heroes we need. They are what every man should strive to be.

Gallant Takes Charity by Morgan Mason Here at Gallant we believe in raising up a generation of youth who deserve a chance to be unique and successful in all they do; no matter what their background is. Each year Gallant hosts a charity event called Gathering Gallant, to raise money for Boys & Girls Clubs. The Gallant Gathering is a fashion show put on by Gallant Magazine each spring. The event is held in downtown Philly, around the corner from the local Boys & Girls Clubs. Only the best of the best attend, the top designers and models from New York, London, and LA. Another huge part of the event is that some of the board members from Boys & Girls Clubs attend. The 2013 charity fashion was filled with good times and success. In 2013 Gallant raised $4,000 dollars at the event, which was a great success. In 2014, Gallant really wanted to step it up and raise over $5,500. The 2014 charity fashion show was filled with high expectations such as more clothes, designs, funds but most importantly fun. This year Gallant raised over $6,000 to donate to Boys & Girls Clubs. Why Boys & Girls Clubs you may ask? The founder of Gallant, Noah Sparks has a special place in his heart for Boys & Girls Clubs because as a young man he used to attend. Sparks promised that whatever he did in life he would

find a way to give back. Sparks grew up in downtown Philly. He was not your average young man; he had a heart for fashion and loved being unique in what he wore.Sparks had a hard family life but attended Boys & Girls Clubs in high school. To this day he states “I would not be who I am today without the help of those people from Boys & Girls Clubs.” Sparks’ way of giving back to one of his most valuable memories is having a fashion show with all of the proceeds going to Boys & Girls Clubs. Boys & Girls Clubs has events and activities that allow young kids to express themselves in a safe and loving environment. Boys & Girls club offers, supportive relationships with a fun environment along with opportunities like never before.Along with donating money to the club, Gallant also allows one young man with a desire to be different and bold in his fashion to be a part of the Gallant fashion show. This year was a lucky young man named Ryan Hudson. Hudson dreams of one day starting his own fashion line and was thrilled that he had the chance to be a part of the fashion show.

Gallant Fashion Show Fashion in Philly

by Colin Ingram

Set-up It’s a crisp spring morning in Philadelphia. I’m watching the Gallant team set up for the outdoor men’s fashion show this week. All the spring mud is being covered by tarps and will eventually be covered by wood flooring for seating and prep rooms. The mud from the wet grass was a problem last year and splashed on some of models’ clothing and shoes. Gallant’s fashion show is about more than the models who don the apparel. There were six select models walking for the show in Philly of the many others. However, this event reaches to the people, appealing to the community of urban metropolis. There wasn’t a sense of pride or arrogance at the show. In the city of Brotherly love, fellowship and family was the vibe. As much as the focus was on outward fashion, the ultimate mission seemed to be community. People living, breathing and working together. The audience seemed as important as the show itself, but certainly not the fashion of course.

26   GALLANT FALL 2014

Preshow Mingle an Hour Before the show models were mingling with the crowd. It was like a community outing. Most of the crowd dressed up and looked fashionable as well. I could see the angst of the models as they adjusted their collars and ties. The show was coming up, and they had to be ready. All the hair product and pomade were in the model’s hair at this point. The hair was styled, and some models were wearing fedoras or stylish golf hats. Persons in the crowd were discussing the fashion coming up for the night with the models. Some inquired how the models got into the business of modeling. People commented on how they loved the atmosphere of this show. They got to reach out to the professional models and even discuss style with fashion designers.

Showtime Speakers were blasting from the D.J.’s set-up. As night reached, more in the crowd showed up. The crowd awaited show time. Backstage in the dressing tents, the designers, models, and photographers were all poised and ready to go. The anticipation was in the air. Music blasted over the hum of city traffic as people began filling their seats on the uniquely carved wooden benches. Finally, the night’s host took the stage to introduce the show. Dressed in a black tuxedo with a white shirt and silver bowtie he welcomed the audience. It was a serious appeal to the people as it was time to present the designers’ clothing lines that were consistent with the culture of urban wear and suave, dress-up wear. The host announced the order of events and purpose of the show. Importantly, he announced the charity purpose of the event. The audience cheered as the host presented Boys & Girls Club as the benefit of the night and announced the goal to raise $5,500 for the local Philadelphia club. Part of the charity would include featuring a selected boy from the local Boys & Girls Club named Ryan Hudson. He would take part in the fashion show. The speaker finished up the introduction as the DJ blasted music to transition into the first walk phase. The first wave on the walk of models wore white flashy suits with tall hair and fashionable flare. They had eccentric lapels on their jackets and long tapered pants. It was a look reminiscent of a Paris fashion show. Gallant’s team came out hard hitting this year. The crowd well received the complex look. The second wave was a more casual appeal of fashion. The models wore a mix of urban casual and dress-up apparel in their outfits. This appealed most to the crowd’s common style of

dress. Expensive basketball sneakers were worn with some of the outfits resonating a truly young and urban look. In this wave, local designer jeans were implemented into some of the outfits that included suit jackets and collared shirts. Bowties were mixed in some of the model’s outfits. The second wave successfully came through as a strong statement of Gallant defining their audience well. Before the third and last wave of models walked, the Boys & Girls Club member Ryan Hudson did his walk and then shared his story with the audience. Moving the audience, as well as inspiring, Ryan spoke about his rough upbringing and desire to express himself through fashion.

Ryan modeled in this last phase of the show. The theme for this last wave was formal wear. Gallant fashion show 2014 owned the city street of Philadelphia just a few blocks from the local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club. Mixing formalwear and urban street fashion for the sake of charity inspired young men to be the best they can, while being charitable. A great time of fellowship and entertainment pursued. Experienced models, top designers, and known artists mingled amongst the crowd in unity. Fashion, fame, and fellowship came together inspiring young men of Philadelphia and attenders from Northeast cities to be truly gallant.

Interview with Xia Chow Be Diversified, Be Creative, Be Honest by John Xing Q: Xia Chow, a 30 year-old Chinese American fashion designer of the new generation. As one of the most known young designers, his works are popular among young people. The public does not only love his creative designs but also love his sense of humor and serious working attitude. Today, we have the honor to have an interview with Xia. Hello Mr. Chow, how are you doing? A: I am doing great, Thank you. Q: Thank you for being in the interview. We have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time, are you excited about this? A: Absolutely, I was told many times that GALLANT wanted to talk with me however we all got things to do so time just did not match. But finally, I am here. Q: I can see the way you dress today seems to tell us a story, what is it? A: Yes, everyone may see the story differently, but I hope everyone can find the resonance. Q: For you, what kind of story is it? A: For me, it is all about the thought of my imaginary designer who is diversified, creative, and honest to people. That is also the ideas I want to express through my designs and products. Q: Besides those features, what are the other characteristics that make your designs unique? In other words, what is your style? A: Actually, my style is really easy. I always pick many kinds of existing elements and combine them together. Then I add the present popular and fashionable ideas to them. Q: As you talked about fashion, fashion promotes the independent innovation and worldwide famous brand in recent years, what do you think an innovation is? A: Fashion has an unbelievable vitality, it can self-replication and self-invention. Today’s society requires fashion more than ever before. In the future, people will pay

28   GALLANT FALL 2014

more attention on expression of individuality, and the varieties of way of expression will stimulate this innovation as well. Q: I know you started your design career when you were very young and now you are successful, do you have any suggestions or advice for those young designers? A: Many kids out there have the God given talents; they have the potential to be great designers. However being a great designer is not an easy thing. It is necessary to master the basic knowledge and the most important thing is being interested in what you are doing, because interest is the best teacher. More than that is to always seek chances to show your ability so that you can have more experience. Q: Lastly, what do you think the trend of men’s fashion will be like in the next few years? A: Well, I can’t guarantee because fashion’s conditions change quickly but I think it will head back to formal wear, which can show men’s masculinities. Neutral color and bright color will be the main scheme and creativities based on traditional wear will be the focal point. Q:Okay, thank you again for the interview. A: My pleasure.

Technology Fashion “Google is poised to change the game of modern technology and fashion all at once.” Wearable technology is the future of the fashion and the technology industry. Google has recently released its Explorer Edition of Google Glass to testers and developers. Google Glass is a wearable computing device that has all the features and capabilities of your current smartphone. Since its release Google Glass has improved vastly inside and out. Google Glass’ software has been updated monthly since the beta release. The design has also improved significantly throughout the last couple months. So where does this fit in the fashion industry? I’m glad you asked. When Google Glass was first released the model was just the wearable computing device attached to a titanium frame. However, Google has recently opened up their Glass accessory store. Google has various designs for actual glass-

es, and sunglasses to be added to Google Glass. As of right now Google only has one manufacturer for their accessories, but expect big names such as: Ray – Ban and Louis Vuitton to be added in the near future. With the backing of some of the top names in fashion Google is poised to change the game of modern technology and fashion all at once. The innovative features partnered with the top designers of our time are truly something we have never seen before. Google has the potential to set a new standard in the fashion and technology industry and prove that the future is now. Google Glass is compatible with both Android and iOS and is rumored for a May 2014 release.
