WORK YO’ BRAIN!

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME SCORE — you’ve just opened our Games issue! This issue is full of games — new games, old games, love games and mind games. Everyone loves games, right? I sure do! Well … most of the time… See, I hate any game that will put me on the spot or make me feel rushed. I’m your typical introvert, so when I have to do anything in front of a group of people, especially under a time constraint, you can pretty much guarantee I’ll try my best to find a way out of it (sorry, Sara Bareilles, you won’t see me be brave). It was really bad when I was little. If I went to the same extremes to get out of games now as I did then, people might have me committed. Here’s an example … I’m one of four kids and our freezer full of popsicles brought all the neighborhood kids to the yard. Hide’n’Seek, Sardines and Freeze Tag were always the go-to games for us. I’d have so much fun hiding and running with my little, dirty friends, but as soon as it was my turn to be “it,” the fun completely stopped. I’d get sweaty and nervous, start crying and inevitably do something crazy — like fall and intentionally hurt myself — so I could quit and go home. Pretty bad, right? Today I’m a little better about it. If I’m around a group of people I’m comfortable with I still get a little nervous, but I try to suck it up. I’ve at least stopped hurling myself into trees and slamming my hands in doors to find a way out of games… Don’t get me wrong, I love games and I loved putting this issue together.

“SSB” started as a Super Nintendo game.

“SSB Brawl” offers 39 characters to choose from.

LOCAL “SUPER SMASH BROS.” PLAYERS SHARE ADVICE There are few who dare to face the dedication required to be a true gamer; however, perfecting technique and embracing free time can turn anyone into an expert. A game recently taking the area by storm, “Super Smash Bros.,” allows players to fight with a variety of characters while participating in competitions in UNA’s Game Room, Seven Points’ For The Win or local tournaments in Huntsville. “Super Smash Bros.” is a crossover fighting game involving worldrenowned characters ranging from Captain Falcon to Link to Mario and Luigi. Players can pick their character and battle up to three competitors, winning the round by “knocking out” all others. But how do you really play and become a pro? Caleb Pettus, a barista at Rivertown Coffee Company in Florence and longtime “Super Smash Bros.” player said that you can perfect your game-

playing by utilizing your friends’ abilities as well as online sources. “First, check out videos of tournaments and take note of what the pros are doing,” Pettus said. “I would say the best thing you can do is find friends to play with and learn the more advanced techniques so you’re not stuck just playing the computer over and over again.” Past tournaments are available for streaming from a variety of video game websites and tips from worldwide players can be found on top FAQ sites like Reddit and WikiHow. Michael Slanovics, a “Super Smash Bros.” player in Huntsville, attended the EVO Championship in Las Vegas in July. Slanovics said getting the fundamentals down is a must. Then you can work your way up to tournaments where you can eventually compete with people from across the world. “It’s just like a sport,” Slanovics said. “You have to work on your throws

and catches before you can make any big plays. Start with the basics, playing against people who are slightly better than you so you’re challenged but not overwhelmed.” Slanovics said he uses Smashboards, the largest online “Super Smash Bros.” community, to gain advice regarding specific characters and strategies. “From the website you can find regional threads and local players,” Slanovics said. “It’s a great first source. There are also different streams on vgbootcamp.com where you can see regularly-scheduled live tournaments or look back into their archives.” The newest version of the game, “Super Smash Bros. Brawl,” features characters not included in the previous N64 and Melee versions. New characters include Ivysaur from Pokemon and Diddy Kong from “Donkey Kong.” Sheffield “Super Smash Bros.” player Ryan Etheridge said to focus on individual moves after you get the basics. “Choose two or three characters you feel you can get pretty comfortable with,” Etheridge said. “There are tons of online tutorials to teach very technical things like short-hopping, wave-dashing and chain grabs.”

Shoals residents interested in perfecting the art of “Super Smash Bros.” can visit For the Win Game Store (FTW) in the Seven Points Shopping Center in Florence. FTW offers a friendly environment for gameplay including (but certainly not limited to) “Soul Caliber,” “Rock Band,” and, you guessed it, “Super Smash Bros.” Open Tuesday through Saturday, FTW requires players to bring their own controllers, keep cursing to a minimum and leave outside food and drink out of the store. All video game consoles are free to use for the first hour, however a $5 fee is charged for each additional hour. At the University of North Alabama, students are offered the opportunity to play “Super Smash Bros.” for free in the Lions Den Game Room in the Guillot University Center (GUC). Student Quintus Rowlett said he encourages students interested in “Super Smash Bros.” to join him and other UNA students daily in the Game Room to learn new techniques and play locally. “There are about seven of us that play ‘Super Smash Bros.’ regularly,” Rowlett said. “We play for at least three hours a day.” Rowlett said he agrees with Pettus, Slanovics and Etheridge that viewing online tutorials and watching professionals play their favorite characters is a great way to get started. While gaming may seem like a past-time you only hear about when conventions come to town, the Super Smash Fever is real and close to home. Those looking to perfect their techniques need only ask their friends, pop into UNA’s Game Room in the GUC or head to FTW Game Store for some expert tips from friendly players. “It’s about taking stock of what’s working and what’s not working,” Slanovics said. “Ask questions. Record your own matches, put them online and have people from all over weigh in.”

As of March 2013, “Brain Age 2” sold 14.88 million copies.

Action games stimulate decision-making skills.

WORK YO’ BRAIN! MODERN WAYS TO EXERCISE YOUR MIND-MUSCLE Keeping our bodies healthy is a big part of our daily lives. Maybe you like to take a morning walk or spend extra time in the produce section picking out foods that fuel your body, but what do you do for your mental health? In this increasingly technological age we find new opportunities emerging every day that present us with effective ways to work up a great mental sweat. Here are a couple of my favorite games for mental health.

BRAIN AGE:

In 2006, Nintendo released a game called “Brain Age” for its DS system. The gane is based off Japanese neuroscientist Dr. Kawashima’s work and is recommended by many neuroscientists as a good way to prevent the effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s. “Brain Age” uses an algorithm based on your performance to give you a tentative brain age (hence the name) so you

have a base by which to measure your current status and progress. It offers several ways to improve this number including a training mode that uses nine puzzles each focused on a different aspect of the mind. “Brain Age” requires use of the handheld DS system, but many similar concepts can be found online with a simple search.

LUMOSITY: Boasting a production team of several neuroscience students and doctors, Lumosity is a web-based program that builds a personalized training program focused on the categories of memory, attention, speed, flexibility and problem-solving. Each category also offers sub-categories that allow you to further personalize your program by focusing in on more specific aspects,

such as remembering patterns or associations. Once you have selected the areas you wish to hone, Lumosity builds a daily workout routine that will have you sharpening your wit in no time! This popular method offers good results as long as you can keep to the daily routine. There is both a full version of Lumosity (requiring a subscription with a seven-day free trial) and a more limited free version that can still be played every day. Try out these games, or find some that work better for you!

Haggling: to dispute or barter over the cost of something.

A survey done by Jorge Silva-Risso, an associate professor of marketing at the University of California, showed that if you really put time into it, you can save around $800 on a new car.

MONEY 7

The number one haggling tip: Just do it.

HAGGLING 101 TIPS TO MAKE YOU THE BEST HAGGLER YOU CAN BE In most places, haggling is becoming a lost art. These days, haggling isn’t really acceptable anywhere other than at yard sales or the occasional thrift store — but why? According to Consumer Reports, haggling has a success rate of around 83%. Those aren’t bad odds at all, so maybe the lack of haggling stems from the fact that we, the younger generation, simply don’t know how or we’re too scared. While it can be an awkward situation at first, haggling for a better price is worth a shot, so I’ve got some tips to make you a better haggler.

1. JUST GO FOR IT.

If you don’t ask, you’ll never know if a price could be haggled or not. It isn’t going to ruin your relationship with a store to ask if they would take a lower price. Don’t be scared! The worse they can do is say no, right?

2. KNOW WHO TO TALK TO.

One of the harder aspects of haggling is knowing who holds the price-reducing super power. The truth is that very few regular employees have the capability to haggle with you on the price of something. Once you find an item you want a better deal on, ask if you can speak to a manager. They are the ones who can actually “cut a deal.”

3. REMEMBER YOUR MANNERS.

Using your manners and paying attention to the person you are haggling with will be much more effective than simply arguing for a better deal. Along with being respectful and courteous, remember to be considerate of other people at the store and the store itself. Don’t haggle at the cash register and go at a time you know won’t be very busy.

DWIGHT SCHRUTE’S GO-TO HAGGLING LINE? “LET’S DO THIS THING. SEAL THE DEAL. 3, 2, 1....5, 4, 3, 2, NOW! SAY IT. DO IT! NOW! SHAKE MY HAND.” price match anyway, but if you’re a good haggler, you might be able to get the price down even more.

4. TIMING IS KEY.

If you know a new model is coming out, that may mean the timing is perfect to go and negotiate a price on the old model. It’s worth a shot!

5. KEEP A CRITICAL EYE.

7. BE ABLE TO LIVE WITHOUT IT.

When searching for a good deal, look for things that may not be in 100% pristine condition — the item might be dented or scratched or maybe Barbie has a few accessories missing. If a product is diminished in value, you’ll have a better chance with negotiating the price.

6. USE PRICE MATCHING TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.

If you are interested in a certain item, find out if any competing stores sell it at a better price. Print out the proof and use it as a bargaining tool. Most stores will

If you are in a hot haggle deal with a store and they won’t budge on their price, you have to be able to tuck tail and walk away. Although it may seem tempting to take whatever their lowest offer is, you have to be able to say, “I’ll take my business elsewhere.” Often times, seeing money walk away is one the most effective tools to getting someone to budge on the price.

work, like yard sales. See how low you can get the “beholder of the deal.” Let’s face it, everyone is looking for a deal. Sometimes, the deal falls into your lap; other times you have to try and make the deal happen for you. Haggling is a great way to make a sweet deal for yourself. Now that you’ve got these tips under your belt, go out one Saturday morning and practice at yard sales. After all, practice makes perfect. Happy Haggling!

8. PRACTICE.

Like anything in life, the more you practice something, the better you should become (if you practice correctly). Try out your skills at places you know haggling should

GIVING HEARTS AND OPEN MINDS TWO GIRLS ON THEIR WAY TO INDIA Florence residents Brooke Rose and Lyndsie Bailey are two girls with a heart for helping others. Rose graduated with a degree in Social Work from The University of North Alabama (UNA) this past May while Bailey will be finishing up her Social Work degree next semester. “I’ve always wanted to do something that would help others. It’s very fulfilling to help someone at their lowest point,” said Rose. Bailey felt the same way. “I’ve always

wanted to serve in some kind of way. There was never a defining moment that made me want to do this, it’s just something I wash born with,” she said. Together, the two girls have quite a bit of volunteer work under their belt. While in college, Rose volunteered her time at Habitat For Humanity and WICP, a center for adults affected by Alzheimer’s. Bailey has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Meals On Wheels and The Hope Program, a tutoring program at Florence City Schools. Rose and Bailey shared a common interest in international social work as well as women’s rights, so they began talking and agreed they wanted to find a way to experience firsthand life in another country where women do not receive fair treatment. They did some research and found an organization called the International Volunteer Headquarters (IVHQ). Through

BROOKE ROSE AND LYNDSIE BAILEY IVHQ the girls were placed as volunteers at an all-girl orphanage in New Delhi, India for a month. “This was a tester to see if I could live somewhere and do international social work,” said Rose. “The women in India receive terrible treatment, so being there

went along with what we’re passionate about.” The girls began preparing for their trip in February, doing extensive research on the area, reading travel guides, watching documentaries, talking with foreign exchange students from India and hosting fundraisers. “I tried not to expect anything. You have to keep an open mind when going to visit a new country,” said Bailey. After months of preparation and planning the girls left for India on July 4, feeling both nervous and excited to take on the challenge of experiencing life in a new place.

JUST A FEW OF THE GIRLS ROSE AND BAILEY FELL IN LOVE WITH IN INDIA.

LOCALS SERVE FOR A MONTH IN DELHI, INDIA Preparing your mind and body to spend a month in India living in an orphanage is something most people would pass on, but Brooke Rose and Lyndsie Bailey of Florence, AL gladly took on the challenge. The girls spent an entire month sleeping on a thin pad on top of wooden planks, surviving the 129-degree heat index with no air conditioning, bathing in buckets and using the bathroom in — well, we won’t go there, but you get the point. Rose and Bailey endured all this to help nurture and love on 86 girls in an orphanage in New Delhi. “Working at the orphanage was intense. We were there 24/7 and experienced exactly how they live every day; it was really enlightening,” said Rose. “I started getting homesick and missing my mom, that’s when I realized these girls don’t have a mom to miss. That really opened my eyes to how they felt.” The girls who live at the orphanage range from age 3 to 23 and stay there until they are either adopted (which is rare) or married. “I fell in love with the girls,” said Rose. “It was especially cool to be with the ones my age, you

really get to learn firsthand their culture and values, which are way different from ours.” Rose and Bailey spent each day helping out around the orphanage. From making breakfast at 5 a.m. to helping the girls with their homework, Rose and Bailey were there to take on the role of a mother. “I knew I would care for the girls, but I didn’t know I was going to bond with them like I did,” said Bailey. “Knowing there was a 99% chance I’d never see them again made leaving the girls really hard.” Rose and Bailey learned a lot during their stay, but they both said that the biggest lesson they wanted to share was to be appreciative of everything we have, especially our families. They both agreed that anyone considering volunteering overseas should definitely do it. “You’ll grow from it and you’ll impact someone else’s life in the process,” said Bailey.

FAIR GAME! 3. SHOOT THE STAR

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT FAIR GAMES WERE A LITTLE UNFAIR? The games at the fair are infamous for their difficulty. We’ve all felt the defeat and frustration of the ever-elusive teddy bear, swinging high above our heads, taunting our every move. Here are some tips and tricks to win the most popular games at the fair.

outer edges of the rungs and grip the sides of the ladder with your hands. Move opposite sides of your body at the same time. When you step up with your left leg, move your right hand up (similar to the way a dog walks).

1. THE ROPE LADDER

In this game, players toss round, plastic rings at rows of bottles, hoping a ring will land on a bottleneck. The Problem: Usually the ring is not much bigger than the bottleneck target you are throwing at. The rings are also often made of hard plastic, making them bouncier so they will hop off the bottle. The Solution: The trick is to give your ring a lot of spin; this makes it much less likely to bounce off the bottleneck. Flick your wrist when you toss the ring, similar to the way you throw a Frisbee.

The Rope Ladder is a deceptively simple game. All you have to do is climb to the end and you win a prize. The Problem: It might seem easy to climb this rope ladder like a regular metal one — feet and hands inside the rungs. However, that brings your center of gravity into a smaller area, which can be less stable and will cause you to fall. The Solution: To win, you must evenly distribute your center of gravity over a larger distance. Place your feet on the

2. THE RING TOSS

5. MILK BOTTLES

This is a classic throwing game in which players are asked to knock over a pyramid of three milk bottles. The Problem: It looks SO easy, but some of these bottles are weighted at the bottom so they won’t fall over and the baseballs are often lighter than regulation. The Solution: It seems as if you could throw the ball into the middle of the bottles where they intersect and win a prize. In reality, your best bet is to aim the ball at the two bottles on the bottom.

4. BASKETBALL HOOPS

You know the game — shoot a simple free throw and win a fluffy prize. Easypeasy, right? The Problem: These balls are overinflated, so they are bouncier than regulation. They’ll never bank into the hoop, which is more than likely bent into

an oval shape and is usually higher than a regulation hoop. The Solution: This game is practically impossible, so there really isn’t a good solution. But, I understand some people just won’t accept ‘impossible,’ so if you must attempt it … instead of trying to bank off the backboard, aim really high in the hopes the ball will come down straight into the hoop.

This game lets you try out your sharpshooter skills by ‘cutting’ out a paper star target using a BB gun. The Problem: Sometimes, the guns at Shoot the Star booths have been tampered with to reduce accuracy. Lowered pressure and off-center sights are only a few ways these guns are altered. The Solution: Instead of using the BB gun’s sight, aim two or three pellets at the top of the page and figure out if your gun shoots high, low, left or right and adjust your aim accordingly. It’s tempting to just blast away at the star on the target, but it won’t work. Instead, use your best aim to fire a hole around the star. You’ll cut out a circle with the star on it, which is much easier!

Blowing on a Nintendo cartridge was damaging.

TY Beanie Babies aren’t worth anything.

FLASHBACKS WORTH A FORTUNE PRICING CHILDHOOD GAMES PROVES TO BE MORE THAN JUST NOSTALGIC Most games we played as children are no longer being manufactured and there are several games and/ or toys that are almost impossible to find in 2014. The rarity of these items has greatly influenced the value. A person looking to re-live their childhood can expect to pay up to 10 times as much as they originally paid for several nostalgic games. “I wish I had held on to my N64 more than anything. Thinking back to memories of playing it with my childhood friends are some of my most fond memories,” said SET reader Benz McGahey. “Even though the value of it hasn’t increased dramatically, it very well could one day. But I’d be more content with reliving my chidhood memories rather than making extra money.” The following list includes several items that weren’t initially expensive at all. Since production of these items has ceased, their value has skyrocketed.

1. N64: “CLAYFIGHTER: THE SCULPTOR’S CUT;” 1998

This game was an extended edition of the original “ClayFighter 63 1/3” released on the N64. The extended edition was produced in very low quantities as it was only distributed to Blockbuster for rental. The game itself, without a box and manual, is worth around $200. The game manual is even more valuable because of the “rental-only” availability of this title; it recently sold for around $700 on eBay. There are several other games for N64 that are worth more than their original price, but nothing quite compares to this gem.

2. POKEMON TRADING CARD GAME: CHARIZARD 1ST EDITION; 1999

The fire-breathing Charizard is a recognizable character to anyone that enjoyed Pokemon as a child, but the original trading card made in his likeness is a much more rare sight. Holographic versions from the first edition of the Pokemon game, printed in 1999, can easily be worth thousands if in mint condition. Charizard was a highly valued card even at the time of its release. Originally priced around $300, it can now be priced anywhere from $500-$2,000 on eBay.

3. POGS: EARTHBOUND EDITION; 1995

POGS was a collectible game in the early ‘90s that featured cartoon characters, sports teams and other popular pop culture icons printed on half dollar-sized discs. POGS branched out to the Nintendo Power Supply catalog in 1995 and released POGS featuring characters from the popular Super Nintendo game “EarthBound” that you could order for $5. These limited edition POGS were never printed again and a set has recently sold on eBay for $250.

4. MILTON BRADLEY: PRETTY, PRETTY PRINCESS; 1990

The board game invented by Peggy Brown in 1990 can now fetch a seller a nice little handful of cash. The game featured several different pieces of princess jewelry that each player tried to obtain throughout the game. The game was very popular during the ‘90s for young girls. Someone looking to buy the original

“BUT, MOM! I HAVE TO WALK MY TAMAGOTCHI!” version of the game that was released in 1990 can expect to pay around $40-$90 on eBay or Amazon.

5. BANDAI: TOMAGOTCHI; 1996

This small electronic keychain accessory was a huge trend in the late ‘90s. Tomagotchi was game where you raised your own virtual pet. The game remained popular for a few years after its release and featured several different versions. One could initially purchase a Tomagotchi for around $10. Someone trying to locate one today may look at paying around $40. This isn’t a huge increase, but considering there could be one lying around in your drawer somewhere waiting to be tossed, $40 is a pretty good deal.

bought the rights for the game and mat from Bandai in 1988, pulled all copies from the shelves in stores and had them destroyed in order to rebrand and sell the products themselves. It is believed that only 10 to 20 complete copies exist in this day and time. In 2010, a North Carolina man sold a factory sealed copy on eBay for an unbelievable $41,000. There are many more games, toys and video game consoles that are not included in this list that have gained value over the years. So before you decide to chunk everything in your old toy box, do a little research and see if you’ve got anything worth a few pretty pennies.

6. BANDAI/NINTENDO: STADIUM EVENTS; 1987

Bandai released “Stadium Events” as one of the few games available in America that was made for the company’s Family Fun Fitness mat — a soft, plastic controller you walked, ran and jumped on to make the characters move. Nintendo

SEPTEMBER 2014 WWW.GETSETMAG.COM

The third week in September is National Singles Week.

The average person will enter two long-term relationships before finding “the one.”

SPECIAL FEATURE 23

Online dating industry generates $1.8 billion/year.

QUIT PLAYING GAMES WITH MY HEART A GLIMPSE INTO THE LOVE GAMES WE PLAY AND HOW TO BEAT THEM Dating is hard. For many of us, the ritual of dating has started to feel like one big game, with several levels, pieces and outcomes. With any relationship, you never know what journey lies ahead of you and what kind of ‘player’ you’re going up against. With this in mind, I talked to a few readers about the love games they’re dealing with and shared some advice on how to beat them.

TACKLING TALKING

“I’ve been talking to the same guy for over six months and it’s starting to feel like we will never move on to the next level. Help?” — Hopeless in Hamilton Talking is a weird phase that our generation has come up with to avoid getting hurt. It’s a buffer that allows us to avoid making real commitments and

dealing with real feelings. My advice in this situation is to sit down and DTR — Define The Relationship. Just ask him, “What are we and where is this going?” Yes, it sucks to confront your crush about how you feel, but if it goes wrong, at least you have your dignity still intact and you’re not wasting your time on a loser that is just trailing you along. And if things go well, it might just be love.

DEALING WITH TINDER

“I decided to give Tinder a try a few months ago. I started talking to a few guys who I thought were great in the beginning, but they ended up being total creeps. I still want to use the app but I don’t want to deal with the weirdos. Any advice?“ — Creeped Out in Cullman

Dating sites are becoming super popular for our generation and more and more people are looking for love online. Tinder is fun — you get to decide who’s hot and who’s not; if you both like what you see, it’s a match! But I agree, there are creeps and you never know wat they’re going to send you. To avoid this, be very clear in your profile that you’re not interested in that type of guy. If one happens to slip through the cracks and your most recent match sends you something that you’d rather not see, report him and move on.

JUMPING THROUGH HOOPS

“I’ve been talking to this girl and it feels like she’s been testing me by having me jump through hoops to prove myself. I like her a lot but I don’t know how much longer I can put up with this “hard to

get” routine. How can I break the cycle and move past this?” — Whipped in Winfield Getting played by your crush in this way is not cool and there’s only one thing to do: change the game on her. Instead of going through her hoops and playing her game, be unpredictable and do something to surprise her. Bring her flowers the next time you see her or take her on an adventurous hiking date or to a baseball game. Catch her off guard and she will probably let hers down.

SMOOTH TEXTER, AWKWARD IN PERSON

“A friend decided to set me up with one of her guy friends and she gave my number to him. We started texting and everything was going great until we actually met in person. He was painfully awkward on the date, but afterward, when he texted me, he was laid back again. I feel like the person I was texting and the person I went on the date with were two separate people. Is it possible to break down the tech wall and see the true him in person?” — Frustrated in Florence This is all too common in our hightech world and there are ways to break the barriers. When he texts you, try calling him back instead of just following suit and sending a quick text back. Our generation has become all too reliant on texting, mainly because it allows us to take all the time we need and think about what we want to say. While it can be great, texting is used by many as a shield to protect their feelings. By calling back, you create an opportunity for him to let down his guard and open up a little bit. And if it gets awkward, ask some interesting questions to get the conversation rolling. While dating can seem difficult at times, remember that it’s all about finding happiness in the end. Just go with it and enjoy the process of finding love while you’re young.

AT LEAST THE BACKSTREET BOYS UNDERSTAND.

28 ART/DIY

WWW.GETSETMAG.COM SEPTEMBER 2014

Games are played worldwide and present in all cultures.

The first board game, BACKGAMMON, was invented around the first century A.D.

Games have educational, mental & physical benefits.

GAMES FOR DAYS TOSS ASIDE THE DICE AND CARDS FOR THESE DIY, LOW MAINTENANCE GAMES It seems the best memories are made when family and friends are gathered together, especially when games are involved. But what if you forgot the deck of cards? Below are a few games that require little supplies and are sure to get everyone talking, laughing and learning more about one another!

SCAVENGER HUNT

Items needed: • Paper • Pen • Paper/plastic bags • Phone/camera Scavenger hunts require players to find specific items within a time limit. Make lists of all the items people should find (Examples: “Alabama memorabilia” or “1987 high school yearbook”). You can assign points to each item on the list based on how easy or hard it is to find. Hand out the lists to each team, set a time limit of an hour or so and decide on a final meeting place. If you have several players who can drive, this can become an on-the-go hunt around town. A prize can be awarded to the winning player/ team, but bragging rights are enough of an incentive!

PAPER TELEPHONE

Items needed: • Paper/notecards • Pen Remember the game telephone? You know, where you whisper a phrase to your neighbor and by the end of the chain, your phrase is completely different from when it started? Well this game takes the classic original and puts an even funnier spin on it. First have players sit in a circle formation. Hand out paper or notecards to each of your players, making sure you have equal numbers of paper and players (for example, if seven people are

playing, each player has seven pieces of paper). Have everyone write a sentence on the first piece of paper. After all players have written a sentence, pass your entire stack to the person beside you. The person who has your stack of paper reads the sentence you wrote, moves that paper to the bottom of the stack and then draws a picture of the sentence on the blank paper in front of them. (Don’t worry about being artistic for these drawings — less quality artwork is actually funnier!) When everyone is finished, pass your entire stack to the next person who will then write a sentence based off your drawing. Continue this process until every player ends up with their original stack. Now comes the best part: go around the room taking turns reading the sentences and showing the pictures. You’ll get to see everyone’s crazy interpretations and you’ll be surprised how far off the original sentence is from the final one.

WHO DONE IT?

Items needed: • Notecards • Pen This game is great for a get-together with friends who may not know each other extremely well, although it can be played with any group! Ask each person in the group to write down one interesting thing they have done (there are no limits!). Examples include “I’ve been skydiving,” or “I ran in a half-marathon.” Collect all the cards, shuffle them and pass them back out. Each person takes turns reading their assigned card and then has to guess whose fact they just read. If you have a larger group, divide into teams and see which team answers correctly first. The guessed person simply says yes or no, and if yes, can then explain the story behind their adventure. This is a great

PAPER TELEPHONE: A HE SAID/SHE SAID GAME WITH A SIDE OF GUARANTEED BELLY LAUGHS. way to know more about people and hear funny stories!

CANDY CONFESSIONS

Items needed: • A candy that has at least 5 different colors • Paper/Pen Pass around the candy, instructing players to select five pieces, all different colors. Make sure to let them know not to eat it yet! After each player has selected his or her candy, write down what each color represents. You can decide whatever color/topic combination you’d like, but here are some examples: Red = favorite hobby Green = favorite place Blue = favorite memory Yellow = dream job

Orange = wild card (tell anything about yourself!) If you don’t have the above colors, change to match the candy types you do have. If you’d like to find out more about each person, you can add more categories and colors of candy. This is a fun way to get to know friends better while enjoying sweet treats! Hopefully these games will spruce up your get-togethers or tailgating parties. Whatever games you choose to try, we hope your guests enjoy them as much as we do!

18% of Americans shop at thrift stores each year.

There are currently more than 25,000 resale, consignment and Not For Profit resale shops in the United States. FOR SAL E (AG AIN )

The U.S. resale industry’s annual revenue is $13 billion.

THRIFT TRIP FIND A BACK-TO-SCHOOL LOOK FROM THE SHOALS AREA’S LOCAL THRIFT SHOPS Summer is over, classes are back in session and it’s finally time for a change of season. If you’re anything like me, you long for this time every year because it means a change in fashion! Thankfully, there is a way to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank — thrifting! So if you’re interested in finding cute outfits on the cheap, join me on a thrifting journey as I show you how to put together a backto-school outfit for under $15! First stop: The Salvation Army located in the smack-dab center of Downtown Florence. I usually find tons of cool shirts, bags/purses, dresses and skirts here. For my look, I found a long, high-waisted, wrap-around grandma skirt. The print was really basic and cool and it was only $2.50 — so of course I had to buy it! I wanted it way shorter, so I cut it about midthigh with my handy fabric scissors. I considered sewing off the edges so it wouldn’t fray, but I kind of liked the worn look. Here’s a tip I always share: don’t focus so much on the length of dresses and skirts, but instead keep your eye out for prints and patterns you like, because you can always alter it to make it your own. My next stop was St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store, located on South Poplar Street. This is by far my favrite thrift store and not many people even know about this place. I typically go here for furniture, picture frames and knickknacks more than I do for clothes. They also just started putting tags and different dates on their furniture, house décor and nicer items. The longer an item is there, the cheaper it gets after it hits a certain date. I love this system because it gives me a small chance of hope in being able to afford something amazing. Speaking of amazing, I scored some beautiful worn lace-up boots for only $4! They were a perfect fit and super classic, so they won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

Next, I headed over to The Blue Door, located in the midst of Industrial Park. I consider this place a hidden gem! It’s by far the biggest thrift store in the Shoals area. You must be really patient here, especially if you want to find some cool digs. I chose to be patient and, lucky enough, I found an awesome old school T-shirt for $1.50! I wound up cutting the shirt shorter so it would accentuate the high-waisted skirt I’d bought earlier! Here’s another tip: if you’re trying to sport the “casual, yet hip” look, rack up on some neat, cheap tees and give it a little pizazz — make it off-theshoulder, turn it into a V-neck or make it a crop top! All this can be easily done with a pair of scissors (fabric scissors are the best option because they’ll cut more even lines)! The last stop on my thrift journey was Loaves and Fishes off Cloverdale Road. I love this place and I love the workers even more — they’re always so friendly and upbeat. Always check out their record collection — I usually come across some really cool albums. You’ll find a lot of neat trinkets and a good bit of furniture in the back room. They always have tons of purses and, believe it or not, I scored a vintage Dooney and Bourke purse (yep, the real deal!) for a solid $5! You can never go wrong with one of those. I ended my day with an entire outfit plus an accessory and I only spent $13! So if anyone ever tries to say it’s impossible to shop on a dime, prove them wrong and introduce them to the thrift world! Map out your thrift trip for your back to school shopping; you’ll definitely be getting more for your money.
