SUPER SPOOKER

Anyone who knows me understands how much of a chicken I am. I can’t watch trailers for scary movies, hearing a ghost story means that I sleep with the lights on and the week the ‘aliens’ took over Star 94 had me packing up my bug out bag. Needless to say, having to research some of the facts in this issue had me cringing and whimpering in my office (and I’m not kidding). While Halloween may not be my personal favorite due to my fear of practically everything, I know that all of the decorating, sugar consuming and thrill seeking make it a favorite holiday for a lot of people, which is why we made sure to pack in as much ‘spook’ as possible. SET was so much fun to put together

SOFT SPOT FOR MORE THAN JUST BRAINS AND BLOOD. . . . . . . 8 this month and we’ve got tons of stuff for all you Halloween lovers out there! 1 in 7 people in Hong Kong play Candy Crush.

UK opened a rehab program for Candy Crush addicts.

CRUSHING THE SWEET TOOTH WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL WITH CANDY CRUSH ANYWAY? You have to admit, matching three samecolored “candies” in a row seems pretty elementary. However, this seemingly basic game has gained over 15.5 million players since being released in April 2012. Earning an estimated $633,000 a day, Candy Crush has taken over electronic devices worldwide. But why, may I ask, do we spend countless hours staring idly at this colorful game? “It’s just addictive … I don’t like quitting before I finish a level,” Tyler Young said. Young, a senior at the

University of North Alabama, is the goto guy for all his friends when it comes to advancing through the upper levels of Candy Crush. In a local survey, 42 percent of players admitted to being “obsessed” with the game, spending between 1-2 hours a day trying to advance to higher levels. Though the game is seemingly simple, it is designed to compel players to continue playing until beating a level. 25 percent of locals surveyed confessed to paying for additional moves. I guess competitive

nature takes over and people essentially lose their sanity while staring wide-eyed at the colorful array of cyber sweets, making it logical to pay for virtual candy. Personally, if I’m going to spend money on candy, I’d much rather spend it on a Butterfinger or at least some Smarties. The creators of Candy Crush must be

patting themselves on their backs right now. With the United States having 8,947,701 (and counting) players, the app earns roughly $230 million a year. That’s enough to buy a Lamborghini each day and still have enough money left over to buy 95,683 Volcano tacos from Taco Bell! I have steered clear of the Candy Crush craze only for the fact that I know my competitive nature will be impossible to ignore, and before I know it, I will have spent half the day trying to beat the game. There is a competitive edge in all of us … even if the game is as basic as matching virtual candy.

THE FRIGHTFUL FACTS HALLOWEEN COSTS CAN BE HAUNTINGLY DAUNTING

Halloween is fresh at the heels of autumn’s arrival and is greeted by equal anticipation from adults and children alike. There’s no sugarcoating just how much fun this holiday can be, but one positively batty aspect that is often overlooked is just how much it spooks your wallet (not to mention your waistline)!

While cobwebs may be a cute decoration for your yard this time of year, they’re not nearly as exciting to find in your pocketbook. Halloween expenses are just as real (and just as frightening) as any other. Map out a budget and consider just how much money you’re willing and able to spend on costumes, candy, party favors and decorations. Deliberate on where all of that money could potentially go to help your community or someone in need. You don’t have to be a Scrooge this Halloween (by all means, have some fun) but stay safe, healthy and smart with your money!

The zombie industry is worth $5.74 billion.

SOFT SPOT FOR MORE THAN JUST BRAINS AND BLOOD Emily Creasy was a blood-spilling, braineating, human-seeking zombie before television shows and movies made it cool. Before “The Walking Dead” and zombieapocalypse rumors, she was chasing after humans for her midnight snack. “I’ve been a zombie since I was about 9 years old,” she said, laughing. The Florida native grew up in Tuscumbia, Ala. and attended the University of North Alabama, all while her father worked to bloody up the zombies and monsters at Killen’s Arx Mortis, formerly known as

Greystone Manor and the Tower of Terror. These days, the zombie still spends her time chasing the living and chomping on brains. “The brain is definitely my favorite,” she said. “Especially if it knows the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re.’” All of her blood baths and late-night snacks are not done for gluttonous reasons, though. She has a soft spot for one organization and its involvement with human life: United Way. “If I had a heart, United Way would be

Creasy joined the 5K after connecting with committee members and working to make the other zombies look their best for previous races. “I really enjoy getting to put on fresh blood,” she said. “People who are active are always tastier.” While those trying to outrun and escape Creasy in the 5K will probably be quick, she will be able to keep up. She maintains a strict diet regimen to keep her energy levels at their absolute best. “It’s important to eat right,” she said. “I try to keep my diet exclusive to the healthnut types, since they have more energy. And I trade body parts often, which helps.”

EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH GUIDE THE INITIATIVES OF UNITED WAY OF NORTHWEST ALABAMA “Live United” — that’s the motto of United Way of America (UWA) and the United Way of Northwest Alabama chapter strives to abide by just that. The United Fund of Colbert County was established in 1958. Following years of changes and mergers, a final merger took place between United Way of Franklin County, Inc. and United Way of the Shoals, Inc. to form the United Way of Northwest Alabama in September 2001. The organization focuses on three core principles: education, income and health. United Way of Northwest Alabama believes in following these three principles,

and they host many events to further these initiatives in the areas they serve. One such initiative is the Success By 6 program — the mission is to “ensure that all children by the age of six have the physical, emotional, social and mental foundations to succeed in school and life.” The Northwest Alabama chapter serves more than 43,000 people annually in Colbert, Lauderdale and Franklin counties. The chapter’s annual fundraising campaign kicked off Sept. 3 and will end in December of this year. To benefit the organization’s efforts, Deadwood Hollow will be hosting a Zombie 5K and the Undeadly Dash on Oct. 5. This is the event’s second year in the Shoals. The Zombie 5K kicks off in Downtown Florence with a new set of twists and turns, as well as a larger pool of zombies, for runners. Following the Zombie 5K, The Undeadly Dash will take place in the haunted woods of Deadwood Hollow. It’s a 5K obstacle course through mud, hills, water, fire and more. Organizers say the two races will take place rain, shine or apocalypse. “It’s a really great event to be involved with, especially on the zombie side,” said Emily Creasy, one of Deadwood Hollow’s zombies. INVESTIGATING GHOSTLY SIGHTINGS IN OUR OWN BACKYARD

Do you remember those sleepovers you used to have in grade school, when every sound was something sneaking in through the window? Every movement in the dark was a ghost, and you just knew your house was haunted? I certainly had plenty of nights like those with my friends, but they all just turned out to be the imagination of giggly little girls in the night. However, plenty of people have experienced real hauntings, and more importantly, they’re happening all around us right now. Maybe you’ve never thought of the South as a hot spot for ghostly encounters, but there are certainly some creepy spots in Tennessee and Alabama, and luckily for me, I got to do some real ghost hunting! If you’re looking to do a little ghost hunting of your own, here’s a small list of some of the haunted places in the local area.

1. NORTON AUDITORIUM It’s supposedly the single most haunted place on the University of North Alabama’s (UNA) campus, and I needed to find out for myself. So Jared McCoy and I set out together on what turned out to be a pretty creepy adventure. We opened the door to the theater at 9 p.m. and the first thing that greeted

us was a completely dark stage. There was absolutely no light on anywhere. The only thing we had with us was a small flashlight! So we said a few words — call it a ghost hunter’s prayer — about getting out of the theatre safely and not meaning to cause any harm. Almost immediately, we started to hear strange noises. Jared and I both heard a door close somewhere downstairs, and at various times he’d look at me and say, “Did you hear that?” In the audio we recorded from Norton, I specifically heard unexplained groaning noises and something that sounded like a small laugh. Of course, you don’t have to just take my word for it. Several other students have had weird things happen to them as well. Adam St. John, a theatre student at UNA, told me the ghost of Norton is George, a construction worker who fell to his death while helping to build the auditorium. He said he’s seen unexplainable things like “chairs moving” and “doors slamming behind” him. Though thankfully, Adam thinks George “just likes the attention” and that he isn’t harmful. Overall, I would say that because of the frequent activity there, and from my own experience while “hunting,” Norton Auditorium is definitely haunted.

2. CARNTON PLANTATION A spooky place you may find interesting is the

Carnton Plantation located in Franklin, Tenn. This plantation and the house that sits on the land is the subject for the book “Widow of the South,” which is the true story of Carrie McGavok and her family. The Battle of Franklin happened very close to the house and the surrounding property, so the house was turned into a makeshift hospital for the injured soldiers. On the upper floor you can still see bloodstains that have soaked into the hardwood floor. According to the Battle of Franklin Trust website, over 9,500 soldiers were wounded, killed or taken prisoner when the Confederates engaged the Union army. Around 7,000 of those were Confederate soldiers. After the battle was over, the McGavok family had the remains of almost 1,500 Confederate men moved onto the 2 acres of land they had allotted to be a cemetery. Carrie remained a caretaker of the cemetery for the rest of her life. Whether the plantation, now part of the Battle of Franklin Trust museum, is really haunted or not, we may never know. Spokespeople offer no comment on paranormal activity or on whether the house is plagued with ghosts. However, quite a few people have claimed to see several different ghosts while visiting, including a Confederate General and a young girl.

3. MT. ZION CHURCH OF CHRIST Still another haunted area is the Mt. Zion Church of Christ in Lawrence County, Tenn. It’s a small church in a very outof-way area and has always been rumored to be haunted. I grew up in Tennessee and this was always the popular place to go to get creeped out, or just to kill some time (not a lot of options for entertainment in a small town). As the story goes, a little girl hid under a small bridge that goes across the creek and watched as some of her family members were murdered on the property. It is said that the bridge is the most haunted place there. Apart from that, some of the tombstones in the church’s cemetery glow, which no one has ever been able to really explain. Personally, I have never really felt creeped out or saw any activity while I was there, but other people have had some unexplainable experiences while visiting (sounds of someone running through the creek and occasional sightings of apparitions). 4. FLORENCE CITY CEMETERY Another paranormal place in the area is the Florence City Cemetery. Jared and I arrived there after dark on the same night we ghost hunted at Norton, but it was a completely different type of feeling. After saying the same sort of prayer at the beginning, we wandered through the graves, asking if anyone had anything to show or tell us. While not as much happened in

the audio recordings from this spot, we did hear what sounded like a man yelling. Of course, this could easily be explained by saying that someone else was outside at the time, but it sounded as if it was coming from the cemetery itself. A lot of the graves here are older and date back to pre-Civil War times. Because many of the people are of Celtic descent, there are a lot of Celtic-themed headstones and markers. In fact, a news article published by WAAY –TV online states that over 70 percent of people buried there prior to the Civil War were of Celtic ancestry. As we made our way toward the back of the cemetery and closer to the older graves, the feeling we got became a little more sinister. It was in this spot that we heard the man yelling. We came upon a child’s vault that had broken completely in two but neither of us was brave enough to see what was underneath. So even though the upper and newer parts of the cemetery did not seem to be haunted, we heard and felt a bit more activity toward the back. My verdict is that this cemetery certainly seems haunted, but the activity accumulates around the older graves. If you decide to investigate for yourself, be prepared! Our amateur ghost hunting kit included: • A flashlight • A cellphone • A notebook • A camera and tripod I’ve seen too many scary movies not to want to take some precautions, so here’s what we did. Even if you are a skeptic, what do you have to lose? • If you’re visiting a public place, call ahead and ask for permission. • If you’re visiting a cemetery, call the police and let them know what you’re up to (and bring your ID). • Ask for some kind of blessing from whatever may be lurking. • Make it clear that no spirits are allowed to follow you when you leave. I hope you have a better idea of the hauntings that occur in your area. As long as you are being safe and smart, I encourage you to do a little investigating of you own! Happy ghost hunting.

OCTOBER 2013

The most popular Halloween costume is the witch.

SPOOKY CHARACTERS UNVEILED THE INSIDE SCOOP ON YOUR FAVORITE HALLOWEEN CHARACTERS It’s that time of year — the season of all things scary! From ghouls to witches, everyone has their favorite Halloween characters. However, you’ve probably never thought about their background stories! Well get ready for a history lesson because I’m here to give you the spooky character breakdown!

described as having yellow skin and bolts are never mentioned. We seem to view Frankenstein’s monster as evil, but originally, he was intelligent and thoughtful. In the book, he turned to violence only as a result of his unjust treatment.

chin, a cape and jet-black, slicked back hair.

“witch” dates back to thousands of years ago and means “wise.” People could not grasp what witches were doing, and assuming these women were up to no good, began turning on them. So how did the witch evolve into the popular Halloween costume we see these days? Back in the 15th century, the Church frowned upon pointed hats, relating points with the Devil. These hats were associated with wizards and magicians, and since witches “mysteriously” healed people, the hat worked for them too. Another prop for witch costumes is the ever-popular broomstick. Many witches frequently carried a broom in order to clean out the rooms where they treated patients, not to fly to their patients’ houses. Finally, the cauldron we always see bubbling with some deadly potion is pretty accurate, but deadly? Not so much. Witches used large pots to cook up their medicine.

THE WEREWOLF

DRACULA

FRANKENSTEIN

You can picture him now… stitched together, sickly green, arms outstretched to gobble up his next victim. Right? Actually … you’d be wrong! One stormy night, writer Mary Shelley and her travel group decided to have a friendly competition — who could write the best scary story. Shelley’s story, the story we now refer to as “Frankenstein,” was the crowd favorite and later became published. Is Frankenstein your favorite character? You must really love scientists! Dr. Victor Frankenstein was the doctor who created the monster by bringing to life a human corpse using electricity. In the novel, contrary to the green skin and bolts we associate with the monster today, he is

On Halloween you are sure to see several people donning Count Dracula costumes. Count Dracula was supposedly based off a real person from 15th century Romania, Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler — lovely name, right? As his name suggests, he was known for impaling, or stabbing, his enemies. The character of Count Dracula we all know (and maybe even love) comes from Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel “Dracula.” This character is easily angered when plans don’t meet his expectations and speaks with a heavy Eastern European accent (“I vill suck your blahd.”). In the novel he is thin with a white moustache, pointed ears and sharp teeth. He has hair on his hands and wears all black. However, Halloween costumes portray Dracula a little differently — fangs, fake blood dripping down the

Originating as European folklore, the werewolf is a human with the ability to transform into a wolf-like creature. The transformation can occur after being placed under a curse of affliction, such as a bite from another werewolf. In Germany, wolfcharms existed until after the 18th century. Werewolves are said to bear their physical traits even in human form. This means furry eyebrows, curved fingernails, low-set ears and an animal-like stride. Movies have changed the way we view werewolves, portraying them as strong, free spirits who change in the midst of the night. Films such as “Twilight” and “The Wolf Man” have influenced the our view of the werewolf today.

WITCHES

Today it is thought that in order to be a witch, one must participate in sorcery or witchcraft. Originally, witches were women who helped cure the sick and found new ways to treat illnesses. Legend has it that the word

I hope this article unveiled a couple of your favorite spooky characters and allowed you to appreciate their rich histories. It’s funny to see how legends change as the years go by, and how we now look at Halloween characters in a completely different way. Whatever you choose to be for Halloween this year, remember to appreciate the history of the scariest season!

STEP 1: PREP YOUR PUMPKIN

Cut a circular lid into the pumpkin by carving a wide circle around the stem. Make sure it’s at least big enough to put your fist through. Pull out as many seeds and stringy goo that you can by hand, and then use a pumpkin or ice cream scoop to scrape the inside clean.

STEP 2: PLACE PATTERN

Tape or pin your pattern onto your pumpkin. Use a pumpkin poking tool to poke small, shallow holes through the paper, following the lines of the pattern. When all lines have been traced, remove pattern and save it for reference later.

STEP 3: CARVING TIME

Insert your carving saw (never use a knife!) into a poked line. Begin sawing out each section. Remember, saws don’t twist and pumpkins don’t give! To prevent your saw from breaking, saw curved areas carefully, gently turning the saw the direction you wish to go while you continue to saw.

STEP 4: LIGHT IT UP!

Battery lights are great for pumpkin lighting. However, if you really love candles, use these to light your pumpkins. Light your candle and then, about a minute or two later, blow it out and observe the inside top of your pumpkin. You’ll see a dark area singed by the candle’s flame. Carve a chimney hole into this area, just over an inch wide, to allow the flame’s heat to escape. Now, relight the candle and watch your pumpkin glow!

CREEPY CRAWLY CRAFTS

1. HANGING GHOULS

GET READY FOR HALLOWEEN WITH A LITTLE DIY DORM DÉCOR! Halloween is just around the corner and you know what that means … decorating season is here! DIY projects are a fun, budget-friendly way to get out of your comfort zone and test your creativity. If you’ve never attempted a DIY project, Halloween is the perfect time to experiment — I mean, mummies and zombies are supposed to look like they’re falling apart, so there’s really no way to mess up! All of these supplies can be found at your local craft store. Have fun!

Supplies: Styrofoam ball, cheesecloth, yarn, glue gun, scissors and black Sharpie How to: Take the white Styrofoam ball and draw big, oval-sized eyes on the front with the Sharpie. Cover it with torn cheesecloth and use a hot glue gun to attach white yarn (or fishing line) to the top of it. Attach it to your ceiling or window for a spook!

2. CREEPY CRAWLERS

Supplies: White pantyhose, cotton balls, plastic spiders and scissors How to: Cut an old pair of pantyhose to your desired length and fill with cotton balls and plastic spiders. To get the best affect alternate spiders and stuffing so that the spiders are seen on the outside and are not in one lump. Attach additional spiders to the outside of the pantyhose and hang from the ceiling.

3. MASON JAR MUMMIES

Supplies: Mason jars (variety of sizes,) cheesecloth (affordable alternative: toilet paper or ace bandage,) white pantyhose, crafting eyes, ribbon, scissors, glue gun and flameless tea lights. How to: When you don’t have a lot of time to decorate, the easiest way to make it look like you’ve done

something festive is to make a table centerpiece. Grab a Mason jar and layer it with cheesecloth by wrapping it around the jar and gluing it at the end. Use ribbon to make a simple bow and glue both the bow and crafting eyes to the Mason jar. For a Jack-OLantern effect, use ripped pantyhose as the mummy wrap, glue on eyes and drop a flameless tea light candle into the Mason jar. Make several of these to create your Halloween centerpiece.

4. MILK JUG JACK-O-LANTERNS

Supplies: Milk jugs, black Sharpie, scissors, white Christmas lights and Jack-O-Lantern pattern stencil (opt.) How to: Wash an old milk jug and allow to dry. Using your black Sharpie, draw a Jack-O-Lantern pattern similar to what you would put on a pumpkin. You can do this free hand or use a stencil. complex. Start with a craft pumpkin (you can buy it black or paint it), this will be used as the body of the cat. Cover the Styrofoam ball with black felt — this will be the cat’s head. Using colored felt, cut small triangles as the ears, eyes and nose of the cat. You can use whatever colors you prefer, but I recommend a dark, creepy yellow for the eyes and orange for the nose. Cut two black pipe cleaners in half and attach under the nose of your cat as the whiskers. Once all components of the head are attached, glue the cat head to your craft pumpkin. Twist 4-5 pieces of black pipe cleaner for the tail and glue to the cat body. You can bend the pipe cleaner tail toward the head of the cat for a natural effect or allow the tail to stand straight up as if frightened. To finish, tie a basic ribbon where the head and body are attached. Decorating is so much fun! Put on a Halloween-themed playlist, throw some candy out on the table and invite all of your friends over for a craft night.

Mash-ups incorporate elements of two or more songs for an added artistic effect.

MONSTER MASH A GUIDE TO SOME FISTPUMPING, BEAT-DROPPING CREATIONS Dr. Frankenstein had it right. Put enough of the right parts together, add some electricity and you’ve got a monster. In our culture of dance music, mash-ups have become a standard by which the public measures a DJ’s creativity. After searching several sources, I’ve compiled a categorized list of the most popular mash-ups.

THE ESSENTIALS

• Cast of “Glee” “Halo/Walking on Sunshine” • Cast of “Glee” “Rumor Has It/Someone Like You” Glee has been instrumental in giving mash-ups the popularity they now have. These are unique in that the songs are actually new arrangements, not just digital renderings of existing music.

RAP/R&B MASH-UPS

• DJ Cappell & Smitty “Juicy – New York, New York” (Notorious B.I.G. & Frank Sinatra) • Party Ben- “Single in Mayberry” (Beyonce & The Andy Griffith Show) Both of these mash-ups are unique in that they successfully blend old, new and diverse styles. “Juicy - New York, New York” mixes Sinatra’s smooth lyrics with the power and soul of Notorious B.I.G.’s rap. “Single in Mayberry” takes the classic whistle theme from The Andy Griffith Show and puts it up against the power styling of Beyonce.

(Amy Winehouse & Britney Spears) “Chasing Cars That Way” basically feeds the 90’s kid in all of us, taking two well-known songs and giving them a little bit more artistic depth (and an excuse to sing along to the Backstreet Boys). “Detox” blends the soul of Winehouse with the synthesized pop of Brittany in a toxic themed mash-up that is sure to please.

MEGAMIXES (SOME OF EVERYTHING)

• Girl Talk - “Smash Your Head” • Dee’Jo Mix - “Mashup Top of Pop” These mash-ups take those top 40 hits that won’t stop playing in your head and loads them in a blender with some beats that ensure that none of these songs will ever leave your mind.

HALLOWEEN MIXES

• King of Pants -“Frankenbooted” • DJ BC “Haunted House of Mash Ups” Here are some Halloween mashups that sample some popular songs while giving your scary shindig a constant beat. These musical offerings hopefully give you a good representation of the wide diversity of mash-ups, but don’t even come close to showing you the sheer volume of mash-ups available.

FRIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

WILL RICK REGAIN ANY SANITY THIS SEASON, OR WILL HE JUST KEEP CHASING GHOSTS?

A REVIEW ON SOME SERIOUSLY SCARY SHOWS AND MOVIES YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS Fall is here again and there is one holiday that most people are anxiously awaiting — Halloween. Some people prepare for this day by going out and finding the perfect costume, while others are just in it for the candy. However, there is a special group — the ones in it for the scare. Those people are awaiting the horror movies and shows that would give most children, and some adults, nightmares. Most people have heard stories involving The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow through countless retellings and television specials. On Sept. 16, Fox decided to roll out their own version of the story with a modernized twist. “Sleepy Hollow” begins with

The Headless Horseman’s pursuit of Ichabod Crane in 1781. The horseman presumably kills Crane, however, through a strange turn of events, they both end up in Sleepy Hollow, NY in 2013. The horseman begins a nightly campaign decapitating the people of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod teams up with Sheriff Abbie Mills to try and stop the horseman before more people are killed. Being from the 18th century, Ichabod has his own personal struggles trying to adapt to the technological and social differences of this time period. “Sleepy Hollow” airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. on Fox. If you haven’t already lost your head over “Sleepy Hollow,” October has even

more to offer. In 2011, we were introduced to a uniquely frightening anthology series known as “American Horror Story.” The first season, known as “Murder House,” focused on the Harmon family and how their move to Los Angeles changed their lives (and afterlives) forever. The second season, “Asylum,” dealt with the horrors that the doctors, nuns and patients of Briarcliff Mental Institution had to endure in the 1960’s. The highly anticipated third season, ”Coven,” premieres Oct. 9 on FX and, as the name suggests, will revolve around witches. Set in New Orleans, “Coven” will also include a fair share of voodoo. Stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will return for their third consecutive season on “American Horror Story” with Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and Gabourey Sidibe signing on for “Coven.” Since 2010, “The Walking Dead” has been infecting the hearts of millions and will continue with its fourth season premiering on Oct. 13 on AMC. Season 4 will dive deeper into the lives of the survivors and focus more on character development rather than the “run and gun,” according to executive producer

Greg Nicotero. The producers say that in this season, the walkers will pose a threat unlike any the survivors have seen before, retiring the manageable walker attacks from season 3. With character development being a bigger focus this season, making the walkers more terrifying seems like a great choice as true character is shown when put under extreme pressure. Don’t feel like following a series? Here are some big screen screams that will get your heart racing. “Insidious: Chapter 2” opened on Sept. 13, tiptoeing through the tulips to number one during its opening weekend. In this sequel to the 2011 hit, Renai Lambert is convinced that her husband, Josh, didn’t actually return from “The Further” (a terrifying realm) after going in to save their son in the first film, but that he is possessed by the spirit of the old woman. Renai is also being questioned about the death of the medium, Elise. Renai and her family decide to relocate to Josh’s childhood home only to be plagued with supernatural events yet again. Lorraine Lambert, Josh’s mother, seeks out Elise’s colleagues to find an explanation to these events but the answer is more than what she bargained for. For all you Stephen King lovers out there, a new adaptation of his 1974 novel “Carrie” opens Oct. 18. In this version, the screenwriters decided to go with a script that was more faithful to King’s novel. Carrie White has been picked on since she was a little girl, being abused by her unstable and religious mother and her classmates. In high school, at the height of her abuse Carrie begins to discover that she has telekinetic powers, though she learns to control them. However, control can only go so far when Carrie’s classmates pull a prank that she didn’t think was that funny. Have fun this Halloween and remember these life-saving tactics that so many horror movie characters seem to ignore — don’t read the Latin, always stick together, listen to the creepy old guy and know that it is never just the wind.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS TAKE YOUR HALLOWEEN COSTUME TO THE NEXT LEVEL All Hallow’s Eve is an all-time favorite holiday for any age. The costumes, candy and camaraderie make this holiday memorable year after year. Costume selection has proven to be trying, but with some imagination there is no need to grab a costume-in-a-bag. Come up with a unique character or theme you would like to portray instead. Creating a one-of-a-kind costume is one of the most fun ways to celebrate a Halloween you will never forget. The key to finding elements of your costume is to actively look! Raiding someone’s closet (be it your roommate’s or your grandma’s) is one of the best places to start. Thrift stores and yard sales are also places you can find what you need on the cheap. If you can’t make those early morning yard sales then check all the possible outlets online such as eBay and Facebook sale sites like Shoals Sale Barn. To pull off a total Halloween look it is very important to carry out your theme in every way possible. This can be done painlessly with just a little bit of planning. Study your Halloween look and compile a list of all the different elements of the outfit and remember to accessorize! The high profile remake of “The Great Gatsby” was one of this year’s hottest movies and is a great theme to capture this Halloween. Groups of friends, couples or individuals can

all create a Halloween ensemble based on “The Great Gatsby.” The look is not hard to pull off with all of the right components. Here are some of the things you will need to accomplish the look of Daisy or any of the other gals from “The Great Gatsby.” • A dress with fringe, feathers, lace and/or sequins • Patterned hose • Plenty of costume jewelry • Black heels/flats or vintage shoes • A roaring 20’s headband (can be easily made) • A classy 20’s hair-do (check tutorials or find a friend to help!) Bonita pulled off our Daisy look with a dress borrowed from a friend paired with gloves from Claire’s, Halloween fishnet pantyhose from Walmart, a pair of her own shoes and costume jewelry borrowed from her mother. Bonita finished off her look with bright red lipstick, crimped hair and a headband from Claire’s. For all you ‘old sports’ wanting to pull off the Jay Gatsby look, here’s what you’ll need: • A well-fitting suit • A bow tie and suspenders/vest • Accessories such as a fedora, round-framed glasses, a cane, a handkerchief and a pocket watch • Slicked-back hair For Brad’s Gatsby look, he paired dress pants and a white shirt from his closet with suspenders and a bow tie from the thrift store. Brad found some great dress shoes in his dad’s closet and he embellished his own fedora with fabric from Hobby Lobby. If the night gets chilly, Brad can add his matching suit coat to compliment the look. It’s the time of year you can forget your everyday worries and become whoever you want to be. Take the

BONITA AND BRAD IN THEIR BEST GATSBY-INSPIRED ATTIRE. time to wow your fellow goblins this year with the perfect costume you created!

Americans buy 600 million lbs of candy at Halloween.

Out of all 50 states, Alabama Googled candy corn the most.

TRICK-OR-TREAT YO’SELF BRING OUT YOUR INNER DR. FRANKENSTEIN AND CREATE THESE GOODIES FROM LEFTOVER CANDY By Nov. 1 your sugar high has worn off and the excitement of All Hallows Eve has started to dwindle. So what do you do now? Well, grab all of your leftover Halloween candy and an apron because I’m here to share some recipes that will keep the Halloween spirit alive a little bit longer.

LEFTOVER CANDY CORN

Candy Corn White Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats by Love From The Oven • 1 Box of Rice Krispies • 1/3 cup candy corn • 1/3 cup white chocolate chips • 1/4 cup sprinkles Follow the standard recipe on the back of the Rice Krispies box and add in candy corn, white chocolate and sprinkles (hold some back for the top). For added fun, use a cookie cutter to create different shapes.

LEFTOVER CANDY BARS

Candy Bar Stuffed Baked Apples by Emeril • 4 medium apples • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped candy bars • 1-1/2 tsp butter • 1/2 cup finely chopped candy bars • 3/4 cup cider • 1 tbsp sugar Preheat oven to 350. With a knife, carefully cut the top 1/2-inch from apples. Scoop out the stem, core and seeds from each apple, leaving the bottom intact. Stand the apples in a 9-inch square baking dish, scooped side up. Spread coarsely chopped candy bars among the apples. Place the butter inside each apple, on top of the candy bar pieces. Then spread finely chopped candy bars among the apples. In a small bowl, whisk together cider and sugar and spread mixture on apples. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake the apples uncovered, until tender on middle rack — about 1 hour and 20

SNAP, CRACKLE AND POP! THESE CANDY CORN RICE KRISPIES TREATS WILL BECOME YOUR FAVORITE! minutes. Remove the apples from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Serve hot or warm, spooning the pan juices over the apples, and add vanilla ice cream if desired. Leftover Candy Hand Pies by Diethood • 1 thawed pie crust • 1 tbsp of chopped candy (per pie) • 1/4 cup chocolate chips Preheat oven to 375. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Roll out crust and begin to cut out round crust pieces with a cookie cutter. Place chopped candy bars (Kit Kats, Twix and Reese’s work well) on one side of each circle. Fold the dough over the candy and crimp the edges with your fingers or a fork. Place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove and let cool. Melt chocolate chips and drizzle over cooled hand pies and serve.

Halloween Candy Ice Cream Cake by Tablespoon • 1 box of Betty Crocker Chewy Fudge Brownie Mix • 4 cups chopped up candy bars • 1 gallon of vanilla ice cream • Chocolate sauce • Caramel sauce

LEFTOVER PEPPERMINTS

Make brownie mix according to box and split the batter between two round pans and let them cool completely. Scoop a quarter gallon of vanilla ice cream (approx. 10 scoops) and stir in chopped candy. Place one of the brownie cakes into the bottom of a Springform pan and top with the first layer of the ice cream mixture. Place pan in fridge for 5 minutes to firm up while you make another layer of candy/ ice cream filling to place on top of the next cake layer. Smooth the top of the cake with a spatula, cover and freeze overnight. Before serving, pop off the Springform pans and top the cake with more chopped candy, chocolate sauce and caramel sauce.

Slowly melt white chocolate morsels in the microwave or in a stovetop double boiler. Stir often to keep from burning. Stir in peppermints. Place popped popcorn in a large bowl. Pour chocolate mixture over the popcorn. Gently stir to make sure all pieces are coated and sprinkle finely crushed peppermints over the popcorn.

White Chocolate and Peppermint Popcorn by Skip To My Lou • 16 oz white chocolate morsels • 1/2 cup crushed peppermints • 4 quarts of popped popcorn (about 1/2 cup corn kernals) • 1 cup finely crushed peppermints

37% of students study between 9 p.m. & midnight.

OCTOBER 2013

Chewing gum increases focus during studying.

MIDTERM MADNESS 3. BE A TEACHER’S PET

YOUR GUIDE TO SURVIVING THOSE DREADED MIDTERMS Brace yourselves! Midterms are coming!! Right when we’re getting used to new classes, professors and schedules — boom! — midterms have arrived and professors begin dropping lines such as, “Fifty percent of your grade depends on this ONE test.” Midterms can definitely be stressful, but staying focused and having a plan can help reduce stress levels and ensure you are prepared for whatever comes your way. Here are some tips to help!

1. MAKE A SCHEDULE

Obviously, studying is a big part of acing those tests and often students overload themselves to the point that facts become extremely jumbled. Don’t let that happen! Make a study schedule a week or two before your midterms and stick to it!

2. BREAK OUT THE NEON

Flashcards and highlighters might seem juvenile to some, but those jokers are helpful! Don’t be embarrassed to break them out in between classes.

Take advantage of office hours and don’t skip review classes. Your professors have these for your benefit. Ask questions and make it a priority to go over your study guides and notes.

4. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY

You may have been able to bluff your way through a high school exam, but don’t expect that to work on college midterms. Know your stuff!

6. STUFF YOUR FACE

Starting out with a good breakfast could increase your ability to focus and recall facts. That chicken biscuit in the morning for your brain is the equivalent of plugging in your iPhone at 0 percent, so make sure to charge yourself up! Above all, don’t stress. Although midterms are important, they’re not worth wrecking your health or sanity over. Take it one test at a time. Study, sleep, eat a good breakfast and you’ll do fine.

5. GRAB SOME Z’S

Sleep is important and pulling an allnighter impairs your ability to retain information! Even if you’re feeling underprepared the night before, rest will reward you much better than losing sleep by cramming in facts you won’t even remember in an hour.
