Winter is all about style!!
O
h la la... It seems love is in the air on set of The Voice. But with all the attention on the much-adored boy band One Direction...and their tight pants, it would have been easy to miss this tender moment between two newly single stars. Yep, you all know what I’m talking about; the sneaky little kiss shared between British soul singer Seal and our own Aussie starlet, Delta Goodrem, on the red carpet last month as they made their way into Logie Awards in Melbourne. Now, I don’t know about you but my jaw certainly hit the floor. Is it a case of Heidi who? The divorce papers are filed, so is Seal looking to move on from his soon-to-be ex-wife and supermodel Heidi Klum? Well, after his latest red carpet outing, it seems the singer is slowly starting to get back into the dating game. I know, I know… The pair have announced they’re “just friends” but you never know what could happen, especially now Delta’s back on the market after her February split from toy boy Nick Jonas. Perhaps they were looking to raise the profile of The Voice, but the peck does echo the flirting between Simon Cowell and Dannii Minogue and we all know where that allegedly led to. Ah, celeb gossip, how we can’t get enough of you. It’s among my true guilty pleasures, along with romantic novels and sucking hot cocoa through Tim Tams – don’t act like you haven’t done it too! So it’s a good thing we’re jam packed full of entertainment with stars galore this issue. Starting with the one and only Grammy Awardwinning Michael Bolton! We catch up with the music crooner when he takes a quick hiatus from his tour Down Under. Australia’s beloved punk rockers, Simple Plan, are also returning to our shores. We chat with the band about taking risks and making the most out of their time here in Oz while they’re here on their most extensive East coast tour yet! Another fan favourite gracing our pages this month is local troupe Gas Grooves. Check out page 15 to score a copy of their latest album. And to top off our list of industry icons, we ask magazine magnate and publishing guru Ita Buttrose to share her top tips for working the boardroom. Good news for Prince fans! As His Royal Purpleness gets close to a sell-out at this first Brisbane Entertainment Centre show on May 18, an extra date has been added. Promoters Garry Van Egmond and Chugg Entertainment late last month announced Brisbane’s second and Australia’s seventh Prince concert on Saturday, May 26. “The demand for a second Brisbane concert was obvious and we’re delighted we’ve been able to juggle the touring schedule and successfully negotiate a Saturday night, one week later, on May 26,” Van Egmond says. “We really wanted a Saturday night for those fans who would need to travel.” But it seems sell-out numbers aren’t the only reasons for the surprise second concert. Many fans were left fuming after apparent Ticketek glitches left them ticketless for his May 18 concert. It’s claimed that the Prince devotees were denied concert tickets after Ticketek would reserve seats but then display an error message when payment details were put in. Van Egmond says tickets to the second show are selling just at quickly as the first!

Hollywood hits the Boat Show T

Built from a kit of authentic parts shipped from the US to Tasmania in 1950, Mistral was then completely restored between 1992 and 2001 by only its second owner since the boat was built. This design emanated from the WWII Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs) and is regarded as one of the finest ever to come out of the Chris Craft factory. To the best of our knowledge Mistral is one of the only survivors. Mistral’s hull is made from King Billy Pine with Brazilian mahogany and Huon Pine for the deck and trim. A freshwater-cooled Chevrolet 350 cubic inch V8 powers this amazing craft, which uses as many of the original components as possible to retain her heritage. Her top speed is 40 knots and will cruise all day at 20 to 25 knots. Mistral’s owner is now looking for a loving custodian for this marvellous piece of history and has established a sale price of $89,000. i everyone, here’s hoping Easter treated you all with respect and the same amount of kilos I put on from all the choccies. It’s been a huge year so far I hope it’s only going to get better! Now, I’m going to have a personal gripe! I’m 56 years old, I’m retired on a Veterans Affairs pension (yeah, I did some hard yards) and I thoroughly enjoy my lifestyle; I earned it! What really bugs me is, soon we’ll be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC legends and some half-arsed politician comes up with the ridiculous idea that we shouldn’t celebrate this as we may offend people that we fought against in all the wars. Give me a break! We fought for our freedom; let’s never forget that! I don’t have any problems with any other nationality but, hey guys, they left their country to come and share this great land of ours and we’re accepting them with open arms. I absolutely refuse to change our ANZAC traditions and if there are some migrants who take offence to our celebrations then the right to leave these shores rests solely with them. For the past five years I’ve helped all our Vets here on the Coast catch up with long lost mates and enjoy an afternoon of Two-Up and a few quiet ales. Look, I know Two-Up is illegal but the law always turned a blind eye to the ANZAC Day games. Now, the Government don’t want us to have any fun because they don’t make any money from it. If your local pub wants to run a game of Two-Up they have to get written consent. We’re the forgotten ones now and still some of our boys are taking may 2012
their last breath on foreign soil. If it wasn’t for our Armed Forces we could all be speaking a language other than English. C’mon, fair crack of the whip! Phew! That was just me venting. All done now so on a lighter note, how many of you have taken my advice and explored our beautiful waterways and bay islands? Not many, huh? The Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is coming up again very soon and it’s well worth a day checking out all the awesome boats, restaurants, bars and shops. If you’ve never stood in the master suite of a $25,000,000 Super Yacht then you’re missing out! Boats of all shapes, sizes and prices are open for inspection. It’s a great day for the whole family, so come and say hello…or sneak up on me at the pub and say, “Your shout Shorty!” I promise to oblige. When you’re out on the water take it easy. If you get booked for D.U.I. you’ll lose your car licence as well. Also, we all know about road rage, well it happens on the water as well. A 70-year-old friend of mine had his life threatened a few weeks ago by a 40-year-old. Just chill out peeps! We can share this wonderful backyard we live in. Don’t forget all your safety gear (life jackets, flares, e-pirb etc.) and enjoy yourselves to the max. Last Saturday night, I headed out for another night on the town and decided to try a brand new nightspot in Southport called The Vault. I was not disappointed! What a fantastic restaurant and bar. The décor created that cosy, romantic

atmosphere that’s sometimes lacking in our part of the world. I was greeted by Andrea and introduced to Jeff and Lesyah, the proud owners, then shown to an intimate table up near the grand piano. Yeah I know, Shorty and a grand piano? But I was lucky to get a table; they were fully booked. I ordered the lamb rack with broccolini, and roasted garlic on a bed of mash. Best food I’ve had in a long time. The chef absolutely nailed it! While eating, I was treated to a touch of Europe with a guy wandering through the tables playing his piano accordion. The music didn’t stop all night, with some great singing and piano playing from the resident pianist, Jake Agius, followed by his young son, Thomas, on the guitar. Lesyah also entertained us with her angelic voice. Non-stop music, including one of the diners getting up and accompanying Jake and Lesyah with the bongo drums. Totally random but, wow, she knew what she was doing. One of the best nights out I’ve ever had and I look forward to my next visit. Remember this one folks, it’s well-worth taking that someone special for a memorable night of fine dining and relaxing music. Okay, I gotta mosey on now so take care and be safe. P.S. I think I broke the merry-go-round but it was a hell of a ride! Via con Dios compadres!

breakthrough technology that Accordion will offer. Accordion’s neighbour will be Kaizen Sushi, a gourmet Japanese restaurant offering a fresh alternative to traditional sushi. On the eve of his national symphony concert tour, multiple Grammy Awardwinning singer Michael Bolton arrives on the Gold Coast for a chat about his latest album, Gems – Australian Tour Edition.
L
istening blind to Michael Bolton’s extraordinary new album, Gems, it’s not hard to guess what a long and illustrious career has preceded it. Few artists ever get to make 21 studio albums, and those that do – especially ones who’ve sold over 53m units worldwide, bagged a hatful of Grammys and earned a star on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame – often end up milking a successful formula. Not so says the musically omnivorous Michael Bolton. “I never just put out a record,” the singer and songwriter insists. “I’m always trying to keep one or two steps ahead of myself. I need to take risks.” He has been as good as his word over the past two decades. In the late 1980s, Michael emerged reinterpreting old soul classics by Ray Charles, Percy Sledge and Otis Redding, whose widow Zelma wrote to him praising his rendition of ‘Dock of the Bay’ as “my favorite version of my husband’s classic.” Moving swiftly on, he played guitar with the blues legend BB King and in 1991 wrote a song with Bob Dylan entitled ‘Steel Bars’. Another virtuosic detour in 1998 saw him wowing classical audiences with an album of Arias, which led to him to singing tenor alongside opera stars Placido Domingo, Jose Carerras, Renee Fleming and the late, great Pavarotti. All the while he was writing pop hits on his own account, as well as supplying material to a raft of other performers, including Barbra Streisand, KISS and Cher. But Michael didn’t slow down, nor did he shake off his growing legion of fans and collaborators. In 2006, around the time he conceived a project to record an album of Sinatra’s swing classics, Michael was approached by the hip hop maestro Kanye May 2012
West who sampled his vocals on ‘Maybe It’s The Power Of Love’ and ‘Never Let Me Down’ for a track with Jay-Z. For a white kid from Connecticut who set out singing lead in a ’70s metal band, Michael sure has covered an amazing amount of ground. And this is no accident. “One big idea I grew up with was this: remain open to all genres and means of musical expression … it’s about excepting any type of music as the artist’s right or freedom of exposition.” True to his word, Michael last year became a viral YouTube sensation for appearing in the SNL debut of The Lonely Island’s Emmynominated ‘Jack Sparrow’ video, already racking up over 75 million hits. “The Lonely Island guys came to me with this concept and I thought, ‘why not?’” Michael smiles. “They may look like they’re just fooling around all the time, but those boys work hard. It was a lot of fun.” Now with the release of Gems, Michael is set for more fun on the national tour. Michael says he loved Australia because of the friendly people. “It’s about how people treat you when you’re in a place far from home, and how you’re accepted and received,” he says. “You can go to some of the most beautiful places on earth but if the people aren’t warm and gracious you just want to get the hell out of there. Here people are very warm and friendly...that’s how I remember Australia.” Michael says the album is dedicated to “my own four most brilliant and beautiful gems” and its creation formed some wonderful relationships. “The discovery of Gems unearthed amazing new collaborations and rekindled relationships with longtime friends. It has been a journey full of surprise and

inspiration, and continues to reveal new layers in an ongoing, magical experience.” Gems – The Duets Collection includes exciting musical collaborations with Grammy Award-winning country super group, Rascal Flatts, Oscar Award-winning composer and producer, A.R. Rahman, international pop superstar, Seal, Australian singing sensation, Delta Goodrem and the famed late vocalist Eva Cassidy. “It was an incredibly rewarding experience recording this album,” Michael says. “The opportunity to work with legendary talent like David Foster, Dan Huff, A.R. Rahman and some of the absolute greatest singers and recording artists in the entire world was inspiring. I can’t wait to share the special music we all created with the world.” Speaking jubilantly, country trio Rascal Flatts says, “We heard that Michael wanted to write something with us. We all kept telling ourselves, ‘It’s like, Michael Bolton! Come on, he’s one of the greatest singers on the planet!’ He wanted to get the whole band involved and make this thing really fresh and new. Gas is one of the hottest groups gigging on the GC. Guitarist Tony Niotakis took time out to share some industry insights. Who are Gas? Gas is comprised of myself, Tony Niotakis (guitar/ beats), Ian Chester (front man/vocals and sax), Rob Maybury (bass) and Corey Pryor (keys, programming). How did you guys get started as a group? Gas was formed when Ian got naked in front of my partner (for a Kahuna massage of course)! She learnt that he too was a passionate musician looking to express himself with his own sound here on the Gold Coast. I had played previously in a funk band with Rob and we met Corey by chance after a gig. He sat in for the last song and we were sold. What’s your role in the group? It’s that of being the force to keep this show on the road throughout the GFC; motivator, manager, ideas person, delegator, composer, guitarist. What inspires you as a musician? The sounds and beauty of the environment here on the Gold Coast. Vibrant health, creativity and my family (partner, Michelle, and son, Bodhi) all feed my inspiration to play music. Also, just the feeling you get when music and you and the audience get in sync, it’s like riding a wave - time stands still for a moment and within the complexity of factors that got you there, it just feels very zen and connected. Are you all from the Gold Coast? All of us are local except for Ian who grew up in Florida and Guam. How would you describe your sound? ‘Groovy lounge’ music that takes you on a journey. Gas has no boundaries and employs a broad sonic palette from Indian flutes to electric guitars and electronic elements. What’s the coolest gig you’ve played so far? That’s a hard one. We played some cool exclusive gigs for Fashion TV who have featured us internationally. You know, typical rock star dream - models dancing around, celebs getting loose. I better stop now... Also getting flown around to Sydney for amazing
parties in Bondi, so many really. Actually, our gigs at Sofitel’s Room 81 (Broadbeach) are always off the hook too! We are very lucky musicians to have to opportunity to play our unique sound at a time when the niche audience for this type of music is growing internationally with the success of brands like Cafe del Mar and Buddha Bar. You guys are all well travelled – do you have a favourite place to visit and perform? Ian and I have played a lot in Japan and just love playing there. The fans are so loyal and there are people into every subgenre of music imaginable. If we weren’t so in love with Australia then Japan would probably be our second choice to relocate to. Shibuya is like another planet! What’s in store for the coming year? So much in the pipeline for this year. We are aligning Gas with other amazing brands including Tyranno Records from Germany who have just began licensing our tracks for Europe, so in early stages of planning European tour late in the year; second CD to be released mid-year, working on compilations and building residencies with James Canning, manager of Respect Music. Punk rockers Simple Plan are back! Chuck Comeau from the band chats to Adele Rowlands-Dealey about the band, taking risks and making the most out of life.
T
he thing with Canadians – even FrenchCanadian rock stars – is that they’re so darn nice. Take Chuck Comeau for example, the drummer for the hugely successful Montreal-based punk-pop ensemble, Simple Plan. While he and his four band mates have free rein to behave as carefree and adult denying as they appear to be in their exciting, hook-filled video clips, Chuck instead talks earnestly about responsibility, loyalty and aspirations... and their love for our land girt by sea. Speaking fondly of the band’s last trip to Australia, Chuck says, “It was such a fun tour,” adding that he and the band couldn’t wait to come back. Simple Plan have answered fans calls to return to our shores, recently announcing they’ll be back in Oz this winter for their most extensive East coast tour to date! With their last gigs Down Under in October proving wildly popular, the boys will bring their charttopping tunes to the stage with a slew of big city and regional performances this June. Joining Simple Plan on tour is We The Kings, whose current single ‘Say You Like Me’ from their latest album Sunshine State Of Mind is racing up the US Singles Charts, having hit Top 30 with no sign of slowing down. The double platinum selling predecessor ‘Check Yes Juliet’ won over Australian listeners with its catchy hooks and the band sold out two headline shows alongside their Soundwave appearances last year. Rounding out the line-up will be local powerpop dance quintet The Never Ever, a group of exuberant Sydneysiders ready to get crowds moving with their boundless enthusiasm and May 2012
danceable tunes. Simple Plan’s latest offering Get Your Heart On! stormed the ARIA charts upon its release late last year, armed with fan favourite and ARIA Top 10 single ‘Jetlag’ featuring Natasha Bedingfield. The new single ‘Summer Paradise’ is the latest in their artillery of hits alongside ‘I’d Do Anything’, ‘Addicted’, ‘Perfect’, ‘Welcome To My Life’ and many more. After a decade together and ever-increasing popularity, Simple Plan’s international tours are becoming more extensive and farreaching, with the band boasting (politely of course) of having performed in over 70 countries. An anomaly in the world of rock, Simple Plan has boasted the same line-up – Pierre Bouvier (lead vocals), Jeff Stinco and Sébastien Lefebvre (guitars), David Desrosiers (bass) and Chuck – since its inception in 1999. It’s a testament, according to Chuck, to the no-nonsense cordiality that the band members show to each other. “A lot of it has to do with the fact that we were all friends before the band, we went to the same high school, we have the same values and the same approach to life,” he says. “It’s all about the fact that we also have the same goals and aspirations for the band, we’re on the same page. And at the times that we’re not, we sit down together and talk, reevaluate what we’ve accomplished and where we want to go. As the years go by, the fact that we’re all still together becomes more important and more precious to us – we value it even more.” On Get Your Heart On! which finds the band, in the words of one reviewer, “checking their

adulthood at the door,” Simple Plan revels in reliving the punchy punk-pop of their youth, with a slew of cameo contributions from the likes of one of their heroes, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Natasha Bedingfield, and SomaliCanadian rapper K’naan. But in addition to bratty rocker anthems like ‘You Suck At Love’ and ‘Can’t Keep My Hands Off You’, there are also attempts to branch out with the pop-reggae sounds of ‘Summer Paradise’, a development Chuck expressed pride in. “We grew up listening to that second generation of California punk rock – bands like Bad Religion – and no matter where we take our music, that will always be part of our DNA and how we look at things. But as we’ve gotten older, we’ve opened our minds to new types of music and styles – it’s crucial to the band to prevent stagnation and boredom,” he says. “That’s what I love about our band – we can have an in-your-face punk song like ‘You Suck At Love’ and the next track can be this reggaeBee Gees-influenced song unlike anything we’ve ever done. It shows we’re expanding our musical palette and taking risks. But because we’ve been playing together for over a decade, it’s still going to sound like us. We have our own little musical identity no matter what style we tackle.” The band were so taken by their fans Down Under, they edited the tour footage from their last visit to form a music video for ‘Summer Paradise’ which had fans all over the country pleading for their return. “It was fun. It was different than a regular video where it’s shot in two days, 12 hours a day, we had our friend Mark Staubach, who did our ‘Astronaut’ video and our ‘Can’t Keep My Hands Off You’ video,
come down and stay with us the whole tour. So he’d just film and film and film and capture all these little moments backstage and during the concerts, off stage or just walking around Sydney or Melbourne. It shows a lot of our personalities and it shows a lot of who we are on and off the stage which is really cool and for us it’s such a great memory to watch that,” says Chuck. “I feel with this album it’s one of our biggest records we’ve had in Australia so it’s such a great feeling that after 12 or 13 years we still get to play really big shows and they’re all sold out and the fans are still there. So to capture that in a video is a really cool thing, only for you guys.” The centerpiece of the album, the heartfelt ballad ‘This Song Saved My Life’, a unique collaboration between the band and its fans. Chuck and Pierre were discussing writing a song about the emotional power music can have in someone’s life. “We wanted to write about how one song, or one album can change someone’s life,” Chuck says. “It may seem like an exaggeration, but I think any music fan has had those moments when you’re going through tough times and you hear a song or a band and it gets your over the hump. We all had those moments growing up, and a lot of fans have told us that we’ve become that band for them.” The band decided to ask their fans how they felt. Chuck posted a message on his Twitter feed saying, “We decided to write a song about you guys... Can you tell me how
our music has made you feel through the year?” The responses flowed immediately and grew to avalanche dimensions. The result is probably the first song ever written via Twitter, with every lyric taken from the fans’ messages. “It was really special. We got messages from kids saying that if they hadn’t heard that song or that album, they didn’t know if they’d be here today. We wanted to write the song as a tribute to them, and figured the best way would be to go to them directly and have them power our music. And in a way, the song has become the symbol of what we stand for
We’re the youngest band to win the award so it was a pretty special moment. as a band – that interaction and feedback with the audience.” Once the song was written, the band took the final step of inviting 25 of the responders to join them in a Vancouver studio to sing on the track, an event that Chuck deemed as “completing the circle.” “I’m really proud of the song – it’s created an even more special bond with the fans, and we love playing it live.” And if you thought Simple Plan couldn’t get any nicer, Chuck described the achievements of the Simple Plan Foundation, which the band founded six years ago as a way to give back to its community and to get involved in the lives of young people in need. “It’s all about kids who are sick with illnesses like cancer, or

kids going through tough times growing up with typical problems like depression, drugs, and dropping out,” he says. According to the band’s statement on the foundation’s website, “it breaks our hearts to see so many young people fighting to survive while feeling depressed and lost … We want our Foundation to help them find their way and show them that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel; that things can get better.” Chuck proudly announced that the foundation has raised over $1 million, and at this year’s annual Juno Awards honoring the best Canadian musical talent, Simple Plan was given the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award for the efforts of the foundation. “I think the message we’re putting out there is you don’t have to wait until you are 40, 50 or 60 to do something. I think the world would be a better place if we all make a little time and a little effort,” Pierre tells reporters at the event. “We’re the youngest band to win the award so it was a pretty special moment,” Chuck adds. Regarding the band’s orientation, the foundation promotes music as a means for the youth to find a passion in their lives, and the band has used its music to forward those aims – donating a dollar from the price of each ticket on their current tour to the foundation and performing an annual benefit show to raise funds. “We’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished – the foundation is something that’s close to our hearts,” Chuck says. And it’s apparent there are some big hearts ticking in rhythm behind the beat of Simple Plan.

The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation is calling on us, as a city of nature and animal-lovers, to assist in a bid to secure the future of our local wildlife and furry friends. The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation has launched its biggest fundraising campaign to date and is calling for the local community to get behind the worthy cause. The campaign focuses on raising public awareness of the hospital and its plight, while also generating much needed funds to keep the charity in operation. ‘Be part of something big, by doing something small’ is the theme of the campaign, which aims to remind locals that by simply making a small donation over the coming two months, we can make a big difference! Senior Veterinarian, Dr. Michael Pyne, says that without funding the hospital would be unable to maintain the high level of veterinary care to all patients. “We pride ourselves on giving the best level of veterinary care available but with reduced funding, sadly, we would have to compromise on some treatments... As a result, it is the responsibility of everyone to help save our native wildlife.” Although the Wildlife Hospital receives some support from the local Gold Coast City Council, it receives no funding from the government at a State or Federal level. “Without the support of the community, we could not keep our wildlife hospital open,” adds Dr. Pyne. TIPS FROM CURRUMBIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY What to do if you have found a baby bird? Baby birds are the most commonly admitted animals to the Community Wildlife Hospital. Most are presented after being ‘rescued’ by well-meaning members of the public. Some tips from the CWS website include: Identification: Not all baby birds are raised in a nest, some are ready to take on the world the day they are born. Seek advice to correctly identify a baby bird before placing it in a makeshift nest.

Featherless: Birds need feathers to keep them warm, and so if their parents do not return within a reasonable amount of time, they will need to be taken into care. Keep them warm while transporting to the wildlife hospital. Fledgling: The baby bird you’ve found may actually be learning to fly under the eye of its parents, so may be on the ground for a good reason. Don’t ‘rescue’ the bird unless it is in danger. Kidnapping: Do not remove baby birds from the parents. They learn all survival skills necessary from them. Only ‘rescue’ a bird that is in obvious danger, and if unsure place the baby bird on a branch for safety from predators and leave them be. Veterinarian: If the baby bird is sick, has been injured, has been in a cat or dog’s mouth, seek wildlife hospital or vet assistance ASAP. Remember, under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992 it is illegal to take protected wildlife from the wild. Use self-tanning products If you’re new to sunless tanning, gradual selftanning products are the safest and easiest way to achieve a flawless tan. Not only great for the body, gradual tanning moisturisers are perfect for the face when you want a healthy touch of colour without overdoing it.
Ensure any waxing/shaving has been done 24 hours prior Your follicles will be more susceptible to irritation and infection after waxing and shaving, so try to wait at least a day after waxing or shaving to avoid clogging or aggravating sensitive pores.
Gradual tanning moisturisers are virtually foolproof (unless you’ve missed a patch!) However if you’ve opted for a mousse, gel or a liquid make sure to avoid heavy sweating or getting wet for at least 6-hours as excessive moisture or water droplets can create discolouration and uneven colour.
Choose the right product for your skin Always test products on an unexposed area like your inner wrists, to see how your skin reacts to it and the colour achieved. If you have sensitive, dry skin or even just normal, it’s always safer to stick to natural and organic based products with hydrating properties instead of chemical-laden formulas which often dry out and irritate skin.
Apply in circular motions Rubbing tanning product up and down the skin can lead to unwanted streaking. Take care to rub product into your skin in circular motions, using less tanner around elbows, ankles, feet, hands, face which tend to soak up product faster and show up as darker.
Maintain your colour Moisturising and continual re-application of a gradual self-tanning moisturiser will make sure you can fake it, and fake it well, for longer. When washing, use a gentle soap or scrub instead of a rough loofah or glove that may inconsistently remove colour.
Don’t get dressed for at least 15 minutes after applying the product Keep the colour on your skin, not your clothes. Wait at least 15 minutes before dressing however don’t stress if you do get colour onto your clothes as self-tanners generally wash easily off clothes if you ever have an accident.

W
ell, it has been a while but I am pleased to be answering a question. on a recent trip to Bali I was with my most anal friend. We were discussing the pros and cons of natural therapies versus traditional medical therapy. If it were only that simple! this has been a debate since the first half of the 20th century, so I thought that you might be interested in the case of oestrogen. Since the contraceptive pill was introduced for menopause in about 1960, women have been asking, ‘should I take it or not?’ By the 1930s, scientists had discovered steroids including oestrogens and progesterone that are formed in the ovaries. the importance to women was that in high doses they inhibited ovulation. In 1939 it was found that progesterone could be synthesised from sarsaparilla. this proved to be too expensive and so on with more research, and it was eventually found that it could also be synthesised from inedible mexican Yams. In approximately 1940, in Western Australia, it was noticed that sheep in particular paddocks were not breeding. on further research it was discovered that the clover that they were feeding on had very high levels of plant oestrogens (phytoestrogens). this was the dawn of natural oestrogens. At the time, to produce one kilogram of natural oestrogen cost $1,000,000.00. the clover involved had to be stressed into thinking there was a drought before it would produce sufficient yields for production. now back to the original question - ‘natural versus medical?’ If we only take into account hot flushes, plant oestrogens will suppress hot flushes by 26 per cent while pharmaceuticals oestrogens will suppress hot flushes by 100 per cent at the right dose. to put this into perspective, the amount of red clover in the form of tea would be may 2012

ast year more bicycles were sold in Australia than cars. This is actually not a surprising statistic, and according to the Bicycle Network of Australia (bv.com.au), “trends in bike sales are in constant flux, driven by economic conditions, fashion, and social change...”; and in fact 2012 marked “the tenth year in a row that bike sales outstripped car sales”. Compared with the rest of the world, we’re still ‘catching up’ on the benefits of using such a green and healthy mode of transport, however with the introduction of electric bikes, as well as hire bikes in most of our major cities, we’re finally (thankfully) seeing that there are alternatives to cars. The bike boom has evidently come about not only because of a rise in petrol prices, but because of a new awareness relating to health benefits associated with a more active lifestyle. Indeed, a great number of the ‘over 50s’ set has recently turned to bike riding in an effort to reduce stress, increase happiness, manage weight and overall wellbeing - but these benefits are relevant for all ages. A significant Taiwanese study of 400,000 adults (tinyurl.com/3thbmo3) found that fifteen minutes of daily exercise is the minimum we require to stay healthy and avoid many negative health issues. The results demonstrated that by simply incorporating low-volume activity - 15-minutes a day - into a May 2012
daily routine, instead of doing nothing, enables a reduction of the risk of mortality by 14%, and each additional 15-minutes of exercise above this reduced mortality by a further 4%. Similarly, according to The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF), “German research has found that people who became physically active after 40 were 55% less likely to develop heart disease than people who were inactive”. This all supports conventional understanding and common sense that promotes any exercise as ‘good’ – and what easier or more enjoyable way to get your ‘15-minutes a day’ than out in the fresh air, on a bike? Evidently the trend is no different on the Gold Coast, so much so that the Council’s website outlines town planning guidelines that incorporate further on-road and off-road bikeways as we move into the future. With bikes available for all requirements – e-bikes, multi-purpose bikes, expensive or inexpensive – there is a bike out there to suit your lifestyle. What are your best tips for women out there networking on their own, especially for when we find ourselves in a room full of strangers? When going alone to an event check the name tag table. You may see someone you know and can go in together. If they don’t show, go it alone. Head for the bar. This isn’t so you can drown your shyness, but buys you a few minutes to survey the scene. Look around. Is there anyone you know? If not, walk up to a group of say, three people. Not two, as they may have come together. Don’t pounce on them. Walk up slowly and say, ‘excuse me, I hope you don’t mind my joining you, but it’s my first time at this luncheon and I don’t know anyone’.
Above all, when networking, remember to listen – it’s the most important part of being a good conversationalist as by giving people ‘hooks’ to talk about themselves (a topic they know a lot about) you’re making it very easy for them and they’ll go away saying, ‘that woman is the most interesting woman I’ve met in ages’. And really, you’ve been talking about them!
However, don’t take over, nod and follow the conversation. If they ignore you (and we hope they don’t), keep looking interested then say, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, I’ll have to go. I’ve seen my boss arriving and I promised to keep an eye out for her. Thank you so much for letting me join you’. Move away from them to another group, and try again.
Whatever you ask in conversation, make sure it’s not an open-ended question where the other person can reply ‘yes’ or ‘no’. This takes you nowhere and you’ll feel as if you’re interrogating them.
What are the best ‘conversation starters’ to keep in mind? Most of our networking is ‘business’, so, ‘where are you working?’, which leads to, ‘how long have you been there?’, and even, ‘have you always worked in sales/marketing/ fashion?’. This will lead to films you’ve both enjoyed, books, hobbies, travel... (and you don’t have to have travelled widely to talk about travel - read the travel sections in magazines and you can contribute to any conversation). May 2012
What do you do if you are just so shy you can’t walk up to a group? Depending on the formality of the occasion, grab a plate of food and ‘work the room’. Introduce yourself: ‘Hi, I’m Patsy Rowe. Would you care for something to eat?’ Then stay and chat for a few minutes.
How can you follow up an event? If you’re at a networking breakfast or lunch, hand your cards to the person beside you and ask them to pass them around the table. That way everyone will automatically get their cards out and do the same. There’s no point in networking if you don’t follow up. Send a card or email with your name, telephone number and email address to those people whom you think will be of interest (or use) in future: ‘Great to meet you at the breakfast yesterday. Would be good to get together as I’d like to show you…’

Hello fellow travellers, Recently, I was lucky enough to experience a luxury super yacht style cruise from Noumea to Cairns over six glorious days. This French cruiseline specialises in small ships, featuring only four at this stage, with another to be launched in 2013. I joined the beautiful L’Austral where 90 per cent of her cabins are balcony suites, carrying a maximum of only 264 passengers. The intimate and personal service complimented the outstanding cuisine and luxury fittings, making us all feel like we were millionaires. The cruiseline is only new to our waters, this being the inaugural voyage of L’Austral in the Southern Hemisphere. I
'm sure you have all heard the word on the street about the little ‘super food’ seed known as quinoa! What is it? How do I cook with it? Where is it from? In fact it is actually a member of the grass family and is harvested from the Goosefoot plant which historically got its name from the awkward shaped leaves upon this interesting little plant which carries these little seeds of life. Quinoa originates from the Andean region in South America and was named nature’s ‘super food’ by ancient Incan tribes who then called it ‘Chisaya Mama’, meaning ‘Mother of all grains’. You may ask, why are they so good for ME? • Gluten free • Rich in iron, calcium, magnesium and copper • Rich in protein and contain all nine essential Amino Acids • Folate • Phosphorus • Great for cardiovascular health • Helpful for those suffering with Diabetes Type 2 • Helpful for migraine suffers • Antioxidant rich for oxidative stress • Essential Fatty Acids e.g. EFA's • High in fibre and low GI - beneficial for keeping blood sugar levels stable
Chisaya Mama Salad & Quinoa Ingredients: 1 cup Black Quinoa ½ cup Whole Green Lentils x1 bunch of fresh Parsley x1 bunch of fresh Mint x1 bunch of English Spinach 50g Wild Rocket Leaves
1 cup of soaked almonds 1 large Carrot 1 Red Capsicum 1 whole Lime 2 dessert spoons cold Pressed Olive Oil
Method: Bring two saucepans to the boil. Add your lentils and quinoa, reduce to a medium heat and boil for 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Wash your almonds, cover with water and soak until ready to put your salad together. Whilst boiling you can start chopping up your salad ingredients. Start with washing all your greens, then take all the greens and finely dice into a tabouli like consistency. Dice capsicum into small squares; grate carrot and place into a mixing bowl. Remove quinoa and lentils from the stove, drain and rinse thoroughly with cold water, followed by your almonds. Tip: Use a mesh strainer to reduce loss of quinoa and lentils. In your mixing bowl add the boiled ingredients, almonds, all greens, carrot and capsicum. Slice the lime in half and together with the olive oil squeeze and drizzle over the salad mix. With your hands lightly mix all the ingredients together and serve on plates atop of fresh rocket leaves. Enjoy! Tip: Keeping a bowl of quinoa and lentils in the fridge is great - you can add to salads and is a quick option for busy people - perfect for vegetarians and vegans who want some extra protein for their meals.

with Fennel and Walnut Salad and Honey-Mustard Dressing Serves 4
ingredients: 1 sourdough baguette (French stick) 1/4 bulb baby fennel, core removed, cut into thin slivers 1 heaped tablespoon chopped walnuts 2 big handfuls of baby salad leaves 1 pear, cored and thinly sliced (no need to peel) 4 heaped tablespoons goat’s curd Honey – Mustard Dressing 2/3 cup virgin olive oil 1/2 cup white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons honey 1/4 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper Method: To make the dressing, whisk all the ingredients together well. Cut the baguette into slices on the diagonal and toast. Combine the fennel, walnuts and salad leaves in a large mixing bowl and toss gently with enough dressing to coat lightly. Arrange on a serving platter with the sliced pear and the goat’s curd. Serve straight away with the toasted baguette. May 2012

Baby Chicken with Basil Zucchini and Cherry Tomatoes Serves 4
ingredients: 4 x 500g baby chickens 120g butter, softened 1/4 cup chopped basil leaves Juice of 4 lemons 4 small zucchinis, diced Large pinch of sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 500g cherry tomatoes, halved Method: Preheat the oven to 200ºC. To prepare the chickens, make an incision along either side of the breastbone and carefully cut the flesh away from the carcass on each side, working your way down to the underside of the bird. You’re aiming to remove the meat from the ribcage and backbone, but to leave the wing and leg attached. For each chicken you’ll end up with 2 halves. Arrange them, skinside down, on a flat baking tray. Place 2 tablespoons of the softened butter in a food processor with the basil and combine well. Dot half of this basil butter over the chicken and pour on half of the lemon juice. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until golden brown, turning after 5 minutes. The chicken is cooked when the juices run clear – test by inserting a skewer into the thickest part of the leg. While the chicken
Fine Apple Tart Serves 4
ingredients: 1 x 24cm sheet puff pastry 4–5 large red apples, peeled and thinly sliced Caster sugar Unsalted butter Method: Preheat the oven to 190ºC. Place the pastry sheet on a baking tray and cut out a circle, using a large dinner plate as a template. Arrange the apple slices on the pastry in overlapping concentric circles, finishing at the centre. Sprinkle liberally with sugar and dot just as liberally with butter. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the sugar caramelises, the apples are golden and the pastry is crisp. If the tart looks a little pale, put it under a hot grill for a few seconds at the end of the cooking time. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

ello fellow foodies, I hope you’re ready for an adventure because this month’s food affair takes us to a whole new world as we sample the taste of India! Walking into Randhawa’s Indian Cuisine, I knew I was in store for something quite special. Easily located in Hope Island Central on Hope Island Road (across from Subway), I could smell the spices wafting through the car park. As I got closer and closer to the entrance, my senses were running wild – cumin, paprika, saffron...my mouth was already watering before I got to sit down. The relaxed yet stylish décor was inviting and the ambience was tastefully uplifting as my young waitress sat me down by the window. After quickly running my eyes over the menu I was greeted with a warm smile by the restaurant owner, Harry, who took me through the day’s specials. With scrumptious dishes of Korma, Vindaloo, Masala, Aloo Gobi and so many more on the menu to choose from, I had no idea what to try first. Luckily for me, Harry informed me it was buffet day, hoorah! So I got to try the lot. First off the block was the eight piece Non Veg Mixed Platter comprising of a selection of Chicken Tikka, Lamb Seekh Kebab, Tandoori Prawn and Garlic Chicken Tikka served on my very own sizzling hotplate on a bed of shredded cabbage, and accompanied by a side salad, side vegetables (almost like a chunky salsa of tomato, carrot, cucumber and onion) and a mint yoghurt dip. The boneless pieces of marinated chicken, minced lamb cooked on skewers with spices and prawns marinated in tandoori paste were a tasteful treat but the star of the entree was definitely the Garlic Chicken Tikka. Much like its Chicken Tikka partner, the garlic companion is cooked in yoghurt, cheese and, of course, garlic adding that extra bit of oomph to the May 2012
dish. My lips were smacking by the time my next dish arrived. A crowd favourite on almost any Indian menu, the Butter Chicken was a feast for my eyes as well and my tastebuds with the bright orange dish pleasing every aesthetic need down to a tee. But then came the important part – its taste. Made with smooth butter and tomato gravy, it’s almost sweet in flavor with big, juicy chicken pieces. Chowing it down like there was no tomorrow, it was obvious why this dish attracted so many customers and an absolute must-try in my books. Another special fare on the day’s menu was Randhawa’s signature Beer Curry. I like my curry with a little kick to it so I asked for medium to hot. Topped with a swirl of yoghurt (just in case I couldn’t take the heat) and served on my plate atop a light and fluffy bed of Jasmine Rice, I could tell this would be one meal to remember. The beef, cooked in authentic and traditional Punjabi style curry, was as tender as a Frank Sinatra love ballad and came with a side of Onion Kulcha. From the first bite, the beef melted in my mouth and the Onion Kulcha (folded flat bread, almost like naan, stuffed with finely diced red onion) was delicious! More savory of its predecessors, the Onion Kulcha took the edge off my spicy main and became another dish to be praised. I thought there was no way I could leave this Indian palace-like restaurant without trying at least one of the desserts. With Kulfi (Indian ice cream), Rasgulla (a mouth-watering Indian sweet) and hot golden milk balls calls Gulab Jaman among the sweet and sugary options, my tastebuds were saying, “Bring it on!” but my stomach was pleading, “I can’t fit anymore.” With great remorse, I accepted defeat (just this time) and I decided to leave the sweets for another day. And don’t worry;

I’ll be back very soon with as many people as I can gather! The service at Randhawa’s was superb and made for a well-rounded dining experience. But if I have one piece of advice, come for the Indian buffet – that way you can try more! Available Wednesday nights from 4:30 to 9:30, as well as Sundays from noon to 2:30pm, (with full a la carte menu options through the week too) I promise you will not be disappointed. Ita Buttrose Magazine magnate, OBE recipient and subject of a very famous Cold Chisel track, Ita Buttrose is admired by many - and she’s here on the Gold Coast appearing at a special event during the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show.
I
saw Ita speak once - actually it was here on the GC. As you’d imagine, she was eloquent, interesting and full of wisdom. Any media professional aspires to be like her. She was the founding editor of Cleo and later, famously the youngest ever to be appointed editor of the Australian Women’s Weekly, which was at that time per capita, the largestselling magazine in the world. Aside from the success however, is her intelligence and willingness to engage those of us who work hard and who see there’s a little more intelligence to the world than the Kardashians or low brow reality programming. In fact, it was her strong, intelligent standpoint that rocketed the Australian Women’s Weekly to fame during her reign as editor. She identified their ‘reader’ in her editor’s note once: “We decided that you were an intelligent woman, who’s interested in everything that’s going on, the type of person who wants a great deal more out of life, like us. Certain aspects of women’s lib appeal to you, but you’re not aggressive about it. And again, like us, you’re all for men as long as they know their place…” Ita’s famous for standing up for her beliefs too, no matter the topic, and a worthy role model for many. Ita’s been voted ‘Australia’s most admired woman’ twice, and she’s pioneered an inspirational path for many juggling challenging work-life responsibilities.
In 1959 we saw Ita’s first ever byline in The Daily Telegraph which the then 17-year-old cadet journalist achieved for covering Britain’s Princess Alexandra’s Australian tour. By 23, Ita was appointed women’s editor of the Telegraph. Ever the fashionista, in 1966 she won a racetrack fashion contest for which the first prize was an overseas trip. It was during this adventure abroad Ita decided to work in the UK. She stayed in London long enough for a stint at respected national title Woman’s Own and to have her first child, Kate. Not too long after Kate’s birth, Ita received a telegram from Sir Frank Packer, head of Australian Consolidated Press (ACP), offering her back her former job as women’s editor at the Telegraph, so she and her family returned home. In 1971 Ita was chosen as founding editor of a new ACP women’s magazine, originally to have been an Australian edition of American’s popular Cosmopolitan. The deal fell through though, so Ita joined a team who set about creating a new publication which evolved into Cleo, launched in 1972 and still going strong. You may even recall Cleo notoriously broke new ground in Australian mainstream publishing by featuring the first nude male centrefold (actor, Jack Thompson) and frank articles on female sexuality. Ita edited Cleo until 1975, when she was appointed editor of the Australian Women’s Weekly (1975–1976), then she became editor-
in-chief of both publications from 1976–1978, before being appointed publisher of the ACP Women’s Division from 1978. In 1981 she was lured away from the Packers by media rivals, the Murdochs, who had offered her the role of editor-in-chief of The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph. At this point Ita hit another important media milestone, as she became the first female editor of a major metropolitan newspaper in Australia. Her media, business and even philanthropic achievements go on and on. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979, and became an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988. In 2003, Ita was awarded the Centenary Medal, and among her many public service and charitable activities, she is a patron of Women of Vision (World Vision Australia). A prolific writer and speaker, Ita has it all going on. Ironically, she was once quoted as saying to The Daily Telegraph, “I did tell them [Jimmy Barnes and his Cold Chisel band mates] that of all the things I’ve done in my career, my kids Kate and Ben thought Cold Chisel’s Ita eclipsed them all.” Ita is the inspirational guest speaker set to appear at this year’s Ladies Boat Show Lunch, part of the extensive ‘Women on Water’ program at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, May 24-27.
