Integrity, loyalty and genuine interest are the key. With a proactive approach to positioning Get it magazine at the forefront of the provincial magazine market, part of our strategy is continually striving to produce a superior and unrivaled product.

Leanne Hart: At the helm is Leanne. With a hundred years in the industry (well, close enough), she’s an old salt in the realm of sales and your go to gal for all intents and purposes. In such a competitive industry, many have posed the question: why take on a publication now? "It's simple. I believe our clients, readers and friends deserve the best we have to offer. Your business is our business and we will always strive to give you the professional service, qualified advice and support you deserve,” says Leanne. “To our readers we will continue to give you an entertaining, informative and provocative publication to look forward to picking up each month. Sam Bell: Known best for her funky designs and fresh approach to a seemingly straight-lined industry, Sam brings a creative spark to the table that simply dazzles those around her. With a career spanning over 15 years in publishing and graphic design, Sam says she loves the magazine game. “It’s challenging, at times very frustrating, and a lot of hard work, but all worth it when your holding the finished product. It’s a bit like child birth really - all the misery fades when it’s over!” she laughs. “We’re always looking for new ways to enhance, support and grow with the changing times and, with the help of our readers and advertisers, I believe we’re achieving this and so much more.” 8

Adele Rowlands-Dealey: Adele is the Gen-Y specialist of the terrific trio. With her finger firmly on the GC's pulse, Adele is enthusiastic, upbeat and easily immerses herself in all facets of the industry. Beginning her career in magazines as a tinytot, she was adamant that her hard work and dedication would pay off. It did. “I've had my heart set on being a hard-hitting journo since I was a teen," she recalls. “Okay, truth is, I’m a total fame fanatic. But if I admit I have a problem, it’s not really a problem, right? I’ve had the chance to interview some of the world’s top artists including Flo Rida, Rihanna, Jason Derulo and just last week I was hanging out my boy Snoop “Doggy” Dogg! If I had one piece of advice? Never give up on your dreams. If you want something bad enough, you'll make it happen.”

music ELVIS COUNTRY Released: January 3 Just in time for what would have been Elvis Presley’s 77th birthday comes The King’s latest release, Elvis Country (Legacy Edition). This album was originally released in January, 1971 and received press accolades with hits such as ‘I Really Don’t Want To Know’, ‘Whole Lot-ta Shakin’ Goin’ On’, ‘There Goes My Everything’, and many more. In a review for Rolling Stone magazine, historian Peter Guralnick says; “... Elvis Presley has come out with a record which gives us some of the very finest and most affecting music since he first recorded for Sun almost 17 years ago.” But it’s the singing, the passion and engagement most of all which mark this album as something truly exceptional. All the familiar virtues are there. The intensity. That peculiar

combination of hypertension and soul. In short - he has never sung better. This Legacy Edition of Elvis Country is coupled with Elvis’ follow-up studio album from June, 1971, Love Letters From Elvis which contains songs recorded at the Elvis Country sessions including; ‘The Sound Of Your Cry’ and ‘Life’, which reached No. 53 on the Billboard charts.

movies THE DESCENDANTS Released: January 12 The Descendants is a sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant journey for Matt King (George Clooney), an indifferent husband and father of two teenage girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. A FEW BEST MEN Released: January 26 When English lad David (Xavier Samuel) announces he is getting married to an Australian, his hapless mates give a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘for better or worse’! The he chaos-filled wedding day tests their new marriage, challenges es David’s relationships with his three best men, and risks turning what should be the best day of their lives into the worst. A Few Best Men is a hilarious culture clash between his friends and her family - because blood is thicker than water, and so are David’s mates! January 2012

CRICKET SUPERSTAR Premieres: January 4 at 6.30pm (AEST)

The quest to unearth Australia’s next sporting hero is about to begin, with FOXTEL announcing the 15 finalists who will appear in Cricket Superstar. Filmed in and around Brisbane and hosted by Lee Furlong, Cricket Superstar is a competitive new sports-reality series following a group of promising young cricketers as they battle it out in a series of gruelling challenges for the chance of a lifetime. After a nationwide audition tour earlier this year, followed by an intensive selection weekend at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, 15 young players were selected to take part in the show. They are: Sam Brandon (20) and Jackson Smith (19) from Queensland; Justin Avendano (18), Josh Clarke (18), Richard Potter (18) and Jake Scicluna (17) from New South Wales; Chris Chellew (21), Jake Fawcett (21) and David Vernon (21) from Western Australia; Mason Crozier (20) and Ian Holland (21) from Victoria; Alex Frick (19), James Moss (22) and Cameron Williams (20) from South Australia; and Ben Cooper (19) from Tasmania. Over the course of filming, these young sportsmen live together in a state-of-the-art mansion in Brisbane while competing in a series of carefully devised cricket challenges designed to show off their skills. There’s also a weekly non-cricket challenge that takes the boys out of their comfort zone in order to reveal their all important characteristics, from skydiving to catwalk modelling, rally driving and even Bollywood dancing. Judging the boys at every step is cricketing great Allan Border. As chief judge, Allan has the final say on who stays and who goes. Also on board is former Australian test cricketer Graham Manou, who’s responsible for mentoring the boys on their journey from backyard cricket ace to Cricket Superstar. Along the way, cricket legends past and present drop in to their training sessions to give invaluable advice. The winner of Cricket Superstar will earn a rookie contract for the 2012-13 season, as well as a four-month scholarship at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane. The 10-part series will air exclusively on FOX8 from Wednesday, January 4 at 6.30pm Qld time (7.30pm AEDT).

Failed

New Year’s Resolutions New Year’s Eve star Larry Miller confessed in a recent red-carpet interview he doesn’t believe in New Year’s resolutions simply because we don’t have the heart to commit. “Well, every year it seems like we all decide to lose a few pounds and read more books, right? I don’t believe that’s ever happened,” he laughs. “And then on January 2, you start drinking again and that’s it!” Inspired by Larry’s witty honesty, we’ve put together the top 10 most failed resolutions. Will you stick to vows in 2012?

1

Lose the love handles

With over half the nation’s population considered overweight or obese, it’s not surprising weight loss is at the top of everyone’s New Year’s resolutions list. And after a season of way too many cookies, Chrissie cakes and holiday parties, it’s only natural that a vow to lose the love handles and belly bulge would follow. Each January, fitness clubs offer deals and promotions to those who want to make good on their resolutions. To those who have been at the gym for the other 11 months of the year, the crowded classes and treadmill lines make the new year a dreaded time. Luckily for gym junkies, research says a whopping 60 per cent of gym memberships go unused and attendance is usually back to its normal grim state by mid-February. Why is that? Simple: we’re a bunch of couch potatoes! Will you change your tune?

2

3

Quit Smoking

So you want to ditch the durries? You should. It discolours your teeth, stains your fingers, gets into all your clothing, irritates your significant other and charms only those in an ever-dwindling crowd of fellow smokers. So what better time than now? The benefits to your health, relationships, finances, vitality, the environment and to your sense of self-esteem for having conquered a really hard-to-kick habit will make any and all of your efforts and determination more than worthwhile. True, there are a host of products to help wean you off your nicotine addiction but you’ll need some luck on your side. Only an estimated 15 per cent of people who try to quit smoking manage to stay cigarette-free six months later. And even then, the stats say most smokers try four times before they quit for good. Will this be your year to stomp out the smoke? Think it over during your next cigarette break. January 2012

12

Learn something new

You’ve been meaning to learn French. You’d love to play the violin. How great would it be to really know how to cook better than the Junior Masterchef kids? Resolving to learn something new is exciting: the world is full of fascinating facts, skills and talents. And the process of discovering them, not just the end result, is enjoyable and rewarding. Well, at least it is for a while. Then you remember there’s a reason you haven’t learned all this yet. French is too hard to pronounce – rolling your Rs isn’t as easy as it seems. Violin takes too much practice...and it sounds like you’re tormenting the neighbour’s cat. Ordering out is just so much easier than cooking. So you make another vow, you’ll do it when you have more time.

4

Watch what you eat During the festive holiday season, it seems almost everything we put in our gobs is awful for us: eggnog, fudge, chips and dip, processed meats, cheese balls, pudding...the list goes on. But, as usual, we vow next year will be different. Gone are the days of schooners and deep-fried chicken wings at happy hour, it’s time to eat healthy. We promise to swap bacon and egg bagels for fresh fruit and oatmeal breakfasts; eat lean, protein-rich meats and crisp salads (non-fat dressing on the side, please); steamed fish and brown rice for dinner, and throw in a serve of spinach for good measure. It all sounds so good on January 1, but a week into our health kick and we’re ready to binge on the Chrissie leftovers. The problem is that most people take this resolution too far by forcing themselves onto restricting diets they can’t possibly keep up. As the saying goes, try everything in moderation eat healthy, but allow yourself a treat now and then. Otherwise, it won’t be long before this resolution falls by the weight-side.

5

Ditch the debt

After a particularly trying financial year (and the always budgetunfriendly month of December), consumers might call for a halt to spending and vow to manage their debt more effectively. With unemployment still high, petrol prices through the roof, the mortgage mess continuing and the “R” word pressing on everyone’s lips, the sad fact about this resolution is that many people will have difficulty accomplishing it, and not through any fault of their own. Rather than pronouncing overarching and often unattainable goals, start small and gradually build up. Only allow yourself to eat one dinner out a week. Take a packed lunch to work when you can and shop around for a new auto/ home insurance and credit cards with lower interest rates and free balance transfers - better yet, cut up your credit card! If you’re lucky enough to make it out of debt, the goal then becomes tucking some money away for a rainy day. So, while flipping through your favourite magazine, repeat the mantra, “I will save money this year, I will save money this year.” But, ooh, look at that new Chanel handbag, and I really could use a Kindle for all those commutes. Of course, I’ll have to get a new outfit to match. And shoes! We can’t forget the shoes. Hmm...maybe I’ll save money next year.

6

Family time

Everyone’s busy these days, it’s true. But blood is thicker than water, and the beginning of the year is an ideal time to reconnect with family that you haven’t seen in a while. Great idea, right? Then February arrives, reality sets in, and you realise that the reason you didn’t see aunty Mavis more often is because she smells and her out-dated stories sound like a brken record. Or that plan to spend more time with the kids? Well, it turns out that work doesn’t magically disappear with the dawning of a new year, and you’re at the office more than ever. It’s a hard promise to keep - no matter how sincere the desire - but we need to remember that work shouldn’t always take priority. Make time for your friends and family for an intimate evening at your favourite restaurant, or pack the car with blankets and games and take the kids to the local park or beach for a picnic. Time is the one thing you can never get back, so use it wisely.

7

Explore the world

A new year and a new world of opportunities to explore — and places, too. It’s the perfect way to open your mind and experience different cultures, so it’s no wonder travel of some sort is on almost everyone’s agenda. Some of the first things we tend to think of in a new year are those exotic destinations we’d hope to seek out (Hawaii, Vanuatu, Bali, the Greek Island...ah, bliss). But in the aftermath of the Great Recession, budgets are tight and staycations are in. Besides, not travelling spares all the headache of planning, applying for visas, fretting over getting scammed in some foreign locale and getting someone to tend to your plants and puppy. There’s a reason why travel and travail sound so similar.

8

Lend a helping hand

It may be a new year, but there are still old problems in the world. To start out on the right foot, you may resolve to lend a helping hand. Volunteering can be a selfless resolution that keeps on giving — to yourself and to others. Whether you choose to spend some time helping out at your local hospital or homeless shelter, mentoring a child, caring for an animal or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organisations that could really use your help. But even the most compassionate among us can fall back on our commitments. Finding time all too often proves harder than finding money, and many would-be volunteers will probably end up writing checks instead. So maybe we’ll rephrase this resolution to include the broader “help others”.

9

Ban the booze The morning after the big NYE bash, it’s not surprising you probably wish you drank less. The question is whether that reso will last for the other 365 days of 2012. Drinking less is undoubtedly good for you: it’s better for your health, your wallet and probably your reputation. So why do we keep on boozing? Folk more learned than we may point to modern science for definitive answers, but we prefer those Greco-Roman ancients who proclaimed “In vino veritas” — “In wine [and champas, vodka, gin, beer, whiskey and even the odd shot of tequila] there is truth.” They said it, not us. If you’re serious about cutting back on the grog, rather than quitting cold turkey, reseach shows you’ll do much better if you taper gradually and moderate your drinking effectively. Begin by reducing your alcohol intake to just weekends. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes.

10 Stress less It’s not a bad idea to resolve to be less stressed. Even without the extra dose of mayhem presented by the holidays, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by work and family obligations, to get carried away by an existential crisis or to create a crisis out of wondering whether or not you bought enough bread crumbs to stuff the Christmas turkey. Less stress can make you healthier and happier, right? So in the coming year you’ll vow to light soothing candles, listen to soundtracks of the calm ocean and take more bubble baths. You’ll quit searching for more things to worry about and find your zen. Unfortunately, stressing less is likely to be the very first resolution you’ll break. On Jan. 1, your train of thought may very well have gone something like this: “Wow, it’s 2012. Yikes, it’s 2012! How did it get to be 2012 already? Where did the past year ago? Where have the past 10 years gone? What am I doing with my life? How am I going to manage going to the gym regularly? I know I said I’d eat healthier, but I really want that bagel. I think I’m going to eat that bagel. But, oh, if I eat that bagel...” Do you see a pattern? January 2012

For those that do, I apologise for all past, present and future indiscretions; for those that don't, I now live by the Bart Simpson code of ethics: “It wasn't me, I didn't do it!”

C

osmetic surgery; sounds nasty doesn’t it? Let’s call it beauty enhancement! I, personally, don’t know why we do it to ourselves, but on the Gold Coast we do it more than anywhere else in Australia. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a personal choice and it really does seem to help those suffering from a lack of confidence and self-esteem, but I believe it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and if we let that beauty shine through we should all be happy with what “the big guy” gave us. And trust me, this is coming from a guy who could do with a little beauty enhancing. I’ve got more lines on my face than a map of Queensland! But, you know what? I’m proud of every single one of them. It’s all about character. Take me for who I am, not what you can do to make my dial look younger. I don’t want to look younger than my kids! Seriously though, if you’re considering any form of cosmetic enhancement think about it very seriously. Thailand: yep, it’s cheap, but you’re also in a foreign country! If something goes wrong when you get home, what are you going to do, fly back for another holiday? If that’s what you’ve got your mind set on doing, I beg you, please look into the professional and qualified doctors we have here in Oz before you start jet-setting overseas!

January 2012

You know I’m a big fan of social networking and I’m on Facebook all the time (look me up). Anyway, in line with the story above; why do people have to Photoshop all their posted pictures? I saw a photo on Facebook the other day of an acquaintance of mine with her partner taken in a local restaurant. They are a gorgeous couple, but the Photoshop work made them look like Ken and Barbie! Come on guys, at least use Photoshop gracefully. Do you honestly believe the average punter can’t tell it’s been “fixed”. Now, enough with the heavy and onto the social scene. You know me, party time! I had a big weekend starting on Friday night at The Boardwalk Tavern with local band Starq. What a night! With almost 400 people enjoying some pumping music the place went off! A huge credit to the crowd as there was’t one incident and most of them stayed ‘til closing time. I attend a lot of live gigs on the Coast and, just quietly, Starq kicked arse! If you get a chance to see these guys, do it! Saturday was a day to rest my weary old bones before heading back to The Boardwalk for the good ole’ Sunday session. If you’re not one for the ultrasonic sounds modern music, then you might enjoy the natural tunes of the Bullets.

15

With a plethora of original songs guaranteed to have your toes tapping, this country rock band was belting out all our fave hits and had the place packed - many arriving in their boots and hats to dance the afternoon away. Needless to say, these guys certainly know how to entertain. So if you’re up this way on the weekends, keep in mind these bad boys play at The Boardy the second Sunday of the month. Well, I’ve had my gripe and given you some local gossip so it’s time for all you guys to get out there and have some fun of your own. Then you can share your stories with me! Flick me an email or message me on Facebook. Until next time, be safe. Short stuff! shortster@bigpond.com P.S. This Australia Day (Jan. 26), I will once again be the MC for the annual bathtub races at Hope Island Marina. Lots of prizes to be won, so start building your tubs now and join me for a day of fun in the sun! Entry forms available from the Boardwalk Tavern, Hope Island.

ell another Christmas has crept up on us and passed us. I hope it was a happy time for all and that your New Year was enjoyable. Now comes the time that we all get on the scales to check the damage. So I thought it might be time to share some tips for those extra kilos. Those three days of merriment will take about three months to remove. It’s such a vicious cycle that we no sooner seem to be getting somewhere than the next silly season is on us. I must say that I do have a personal interest in this area, as since last Christmas I have lost 12 kilos and have not had a real problem in keeping it off. I don’t believe in diets and gyms. I was in Melbourne last year speaking to a colleague who is an authority in lap banding and weight loss. Interestingly he explained to me that after the first 10 kilos the metabolism has been stimulated and really starts to burn fat. Problem is how to get the first and most difficult 10 kilos off. The first thing you need to do is sit down and write a list of all the things you like to eat. My list unfortunately consisted of chocolates, wine, cheese pasta and all other things that are bad for you. Did you know that one Allen’s jelly January 2012

snake contains 85 calories? On the other side of my list were things like smoked salmon, sun dried tomatoes, garlic and other non calorific goodies. So what do you do next? Get a calorie counter. For those of you that have an iPhone, download My Fitness Pal. With this free app. you can key in all the things you like and check their calories. Sounds really boring but after a couple of weeks you won’t need to look because you’ll already know the calories. I hate the idea of calorie counting but guess what? It works. I have a patient who is in one of my trials. She has lost her first five kilos over 12 weeks. 12 weeks you say? How slow is that?! The difference is that she has done it without missing out on the things she likes to eat and doesn’t feel that she’s on a diet. What that means is that she doesn’t feel she’s missing out on anything and therefore is in fact changing her life style to one that is sustainable forever. This is the first step. I don’t have the space to continue in this month’s edition but I will continue next month. I love the feeling of losing that little extra weight that makes your jeans fit that little bit better. For those of you who say ‘yes, I have tried that’, please feel

16

free to contact me through Get it because if you’re really serious this will work for you. For those of you, like me, who say ‘but I only want to lose a couple of kilos’ and ‘I always thought that it was easier if you were heavier and that a couple of kilos was harder to lose’, well, I did it and so can you! I’m not sure where the 12 kilos came from but the good news is that it came off all parts of my body - even my bra’s fit better! I think I sound like a reformed smoker preaching the joys of smelling fresh air. Losing weight for post menopausal women is really difficult if you don’t have a formula. The good news for me is that I still eat my chocolate and I love my bubbles (champagne) and my weight is not a problem. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Dr Jan

or years, mankind has been attempting to harness the bronzing, fiery essence of the sun, desperately trying to omit the cycle between winter’s pale existence, and the beauty of summer’s sun-kissed skin. Woman in ancient Sumeria even had a tanning trick up their sleeves. As the heat approaches us so does our festive season and it may be time to reinvent your summer look. There are so many options so look up the social calendar and try out some new looks, there is definitely one for every occasion. This summer nearly anything goes. On the runways the fringe has made a comeback, low slick pony tails are popular and up dos have messy ‘40s inspired rolls – a great change for the half up option. Deep side partings are coming back in but for those natural girls you can hold on to that middle part for another summer. There is a little more straight hair hitting the runways again but you can never beat soft waves, they can take you from lunch to dinner and beyond. Plaits and braids are hugethink bohemian chic, messy fishtail plaits will take you from day to night and braids at the front of the hair will keep that hair out of your lip gloss all whilst looking so effortlessly wow! As for colour, it’s all about natural blended colour this season. No stripes, lines, blotches, not a line in sight. Highlighting is at its most subtle in decades and it’s simply stunning. Honey tones are what we’re asking for ladies, soft, natural and oh so chic. For the bold hearted curling their lips up at another natural trend report, a solid hot red is the way to go. With so many options for the season there are no excuses ladies - the look is in how you feel. It’s summer time, so have fun with the season’s looks and remember to add a flirty edge.

Pulse Cardio Bar is a fat burning, muscle carving interval training workout designed to have your body bikini buff in no time with these simple steps. And the best part is: you can do it all at home in less than 30 minutes!

1

Thighs This first exercise is great for targeting those problem areas surrounding your thighs and derriere while engaging your core as well.

To begin, stand upright with your feet hip-width apart. Draw your core muscles in and up, while bringing your shoulders down. Stablise yourself, then start by slowly lifting one knee up towards your chest. Alternate between legs performing the same movements on each side 24 times.

Tip

: make sure you exhale as you lift the knee up, and draw a deep breath in when lowering your leg.

2

Legs This next step will help shape and elongate your thigh muscles giving you those long, lean legs you’ve always wanted. For this excercise you may need to hold onto a chair or flat surface to stabilise yourself.

Stand upright with your feet together. Draw your core muscles in and up, and keep tailbone long. Keep your knees squeezed together and lift your heels as high as possible. Bend your legs into a squat position - two counts down, then two counts up - repeat 24 times. Then, using the same movements as above, perform small pulses - repeat 24 times.

3

Hips & Inner Thigh This third exercise will really work your outer hip and inner thighs. Start by standing upright with your feet shoulderwidth apart.

Keep your core muscles pulled tight and tailbone long and turn your knees out, over second toe. Pulse three times and come half way up - repeat 24 times. On the last set, stay as low as possible pressing your knees back and perform very tiny pulses 24 times.

4

Tummy & Abs It’s crunch time! This last step is designed to give you a tight tum and rock-hard abs! Lie on a mat and tuck your hips under so your lower back is pressed into the floor.

Hold onto the back of your thighs and squeeze your inner thighs together. Engage your core muscles and pulse up (crunch) 24 times, these should be small movements. Repeat this sequence three to four times a week and you’ll be feeling tight, trimmed and terrific in a flash!

Tip: To reduce straining your neck, make sure you keep your neck and shoulders relaxed at all times.

COVER STORY

Delta Goodrem From music to movies, TV sets to centre stage, Delta Goodrem is a triple-threat talent bundle all wrapped up in a blonde, bronzed beauty package. This month, we catch up with the Aussie songbird to chat about love, life, health, happiness and all the musical mayhem along the way.

A

ustralian TV soap Neighbours has a reputation for launching the careers of some of our favourite singing stars, Kylie Minogue, Holly Valance and Natalie Imbruglia to name a just a few. But it was a special moment when Delta Goodrem stepped into the limelight. Taking up the role as shy school girl and aspiring singer Nina Tucker, Delta offered a more hands on soulful songwriters approach to music and soon found herself at the top of every ‘one to watch’ list around nation. Delta’s piano-based ballad ‘Born to Try’ premiered on the show in 2002 and quickly became her first ARIA No. 1 and UK top three. Her role on the show also scored her a Logie for Most Popular New Talent the following year, and two other nominations at the 2004 Logie Awards (including a Gold Logie nomination!). In January 2003, Delta released another chart-topping single titled ‘Lost Without You’ catapulting her popularity and making way for her largely self-penned debut album Innocent Eyes. Breaking records nation-wide as one of only a handful of albums to sell over a million copies in Australia (one in every 20 Australians own a copy), Innocent Eyes spent a whopping 29 weeks at No.1, won the Highest Selling Album award at the ARIA Awards two years running, charted highly in the UK, peaking at No. 2, and has now clocked up over 4.5 million sales worldwide! Each of the album’s five singles made No.1 in Australia - breaking current records held by Kylie Minogue and the Beatles - and Innocent Eyes spawned three Top 10 singles in the UK. At just 18 years old, Delta was charming the globe territory by territory but it’s not hard to see why: in an era of pre-fabricated as-seenon-TV popstars, Delta Goodrem is the real thing. A pianist since the age of seven, Delta harks back to a bygone era where pop stars wrote their own songs and sang them live - as simple as that. Delta became the girl who was always on stage from as long as anyone in her family can remember. “It always just felt natural,” she says. “I remember when I went to concerts of artists I loved and I thought, ‘I

can’t wait to do that’. It was never ‘I hope I get to do it’, I always knew I’d do it. I just believed in myself. There wasn’t a plan B.” Amidst her booming career, when her life seemed on such a high, Delta’s health took a turn for the worse. On July 8, 2003, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer that attacks the body’s immune system. “I was 18 when I was diagnosed and I had a No. 1 album and single in the country. And in the UK, I was No. 2. It was such a bipolar year.” ‘Not Me, Not I’, released shortly after the announcement that Delta had been diagnosed with cancer, became her fourth consecutive ARIA No. 1 single, overtaking the previous effort of three No.1’s from Kylie Minogue’s debut Kylie album. But Delta was forced to put all working commitments on hold while undertaking treatment for the disease. In an exclusive interview with the Australian Women’s Weekly, Delta reveals that, since 2002, she’d suffered from a head-to-toe rash, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, and a lump on her neck. “I was doing sit-ups when I felt something pop in my neck. I reached down and I felt a small lump at the base of my throat. It wasn’t sore, it wasn’t visible, but I could feel it,” she says. The news of her diagnosis made headlines globally and an outpouring of support was shown by fans and the general public alike. Later that month, Delta won a staggering seven ARIA Awards, including Best Female Artist, surpassing Natalie Imbruglia’s previous record of six awards in 1999. Too unwell to perform at the ceremony, singer Darren Hayes performed a rendition of ‘Lost Without You’ as a tribute, bringing an overwhelmed Delta to tears. Reflecting on that period of her life, Delta says: “It’s weird to see pictures of that time. In some ways, the fact that I was so sick was so out there, and yet I kept it really private. No-one saw me on the days I was really sick.” She has since made a full recovery and now devotes a great deal of her time promoting cancer charities. Even collaborating on a song

with hero Olivia Newton-John for her new cancer charity. “Olivia’s been a shining light for me. She’s guided me, she’s continually given me great advice,” Delta says. After announcing in late December 2003 that she was in remission, Delta came back on full-throttle launching into The Visualise Tour, her debut concert tour of Australia. It was there Delta thanked her fans and loved ones for all the letters and well wishes she received throughout the trying time. Much of

her 2004 album Mistaken Identity, in particular ‘Extraordinary Day’, is inspired by her battle. In September 2004, she became the face of soft drink giant Pepsi in Australia, appearing on the product, billboards, TV advertisements and performing an exclusive show for competition winners. Then, in 2005, she took it to the big screen scoring a lead role in Hating Alison Ashley, a film based on the popular children’s novel. April saw Delta relocate to New York to launch her career in the United States with a re-worked version of ‘Lost Without You’. She also appeared in the last two episodes of short-lived American series North Shore in a bid to gain greater exposure around the US. On March 15, 2006, Delta performed a new song, ‘Together We Are One’, at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in front of 80,000 spectators and up to 1.5 billion television viewers worldwide. The song was written specifically for the event with Kasey Chambers and then-boyfriend, former Westlife singer Brian McFadden. On November 30, 2007, the lovebirds announced they were engaged. In his book, Brian wrote that he proposed to her on a trip to Bali. OK Magazine Australia revealed he had planned the proposal for months and the couple were set to wed in December 2009. The wedding, however, was delayed with Australian media reporting that the couple had sold their mansion in Hunters Hill and were living January 2012

separately – Delta in the US and Brian with friends in Melbourne – due to their careers taking them in different directions. In 2008, Delta’s first album for the US simply titled Delta - was her introduction to the American market. Two years in the making, it serves as a welcome antidote to the rushed world of generic pop by creating timeless, global tunes injected with power, passion and personality. The single ‘In This Life’ was released and got to the top spot on the HOT A/C radio charts there. ‘Believe Again’ opens the proceedings with Delta’s most ambitious musical offering yet - a cinematic epic recalling the lush pop of Madonna’s Frozen, precisely produced by Marius DeVries (Bjork, Massive Attack, U2) and Stuart Crichton. “Sometimes you write songs and you think ‘That’s fine, that’s okay’,” Delta says. “I didn’t want fine. I wanted better than fine. I wanted a great album. I’ve always had a really good ear for a great song that appeals to a lot of people. I wanted to make sure I had something special. ‘Believe Again’ was the one that turned the corner, it inspired the whole album.” The first single ‘In This Life’, (produced by John Shanks) became Delta’s eighth No.1 hit in Australia (out of an impressive 13 singles released to date), effortlessly seducing radio with its life-affirming chorus and wall-to-wall melodic rush. “It has that light and shade,” Delta says of track. “The sentiment in songs is so important to me. It’s got the melody that rings in your ear because it’s catchy and you can sing along with it, but I can also belt it out. It’s got all the elements I could hope to be introduced with.” January 2012

Just as music has always been there for the good times in her life, it was there at the hardest moments too. After what seemed an already accelerated life and career of dizzying highs and crushing lows, the Delta album saw her coming out of the dark with a product that embraces the positivity and healing power of pop music. More recently, Delta wrote ‘I’m Not Ready’, recorded by Michael Bolton for his 2011 album Gems and performed the track with him on US Dancing With The Stars to over 21 million viewers. “Getting to write Michael Bolton’s first single and getting to sing with him on different shows like Dancing With The Stars and the Today show and all those things - it’s amazing,” Delta says. But it seems Delta fans will have to wait a little longer for her fourth album. “I’ve been a busy bee in the studio [but] I can’t force it. It’s like catching a lightning bolt writing that song, that song that represents this time in my life,” she says. “Right now is a little more calm before the storm. I’m aware of all the themes I want to talk about, I’m aware of the colour I want it to be. I’ve done a lot of collaboration over the years, but right now I’m enjoying writing by myself and just being me again for a while.” As with all her albums, Delta’s been writing and recording material in America. “I need to keep travelling, being a gypsy, having experiences and writing about them. I’m not moving anywhere permanently. I’ll be in LA for a few months but Australia’s always going to be my home,” she says. “I always carry the flame of Australia in my heart. Anywhere I am, I’m always the most patriotic. I’m that painful

26

one in the corner that goes ‘yeah, but in Australia we do this, and in Australia we have this’, and I’ll always be that way.” Speaking of her collaborations with rumoured boyfriend Nick Jonas, Delta says: “As a writer I’ve always written, my whole life, from the heart. I’m so lucky to have a wonderful person in my life and he’s very talented so it’s been wonderful to write with him as well. I’ve written with some incredible people and some incredible artists, him (Nick) included, so it’s been really wonderful to, as a musician, really grow and continue to take it to the new level. And I hope that this new album really does that, it takes it to the new level and I feel really creative. There’s been so much change but all for the better,” she smiles. Delta has been fixated on Stevie Nicks for the past few years, which has influenced her latest material. “What resonates with me now is the acoustic guitar and piano. I’m enjoying writing songs that are more stripped back. I’ve done a 360 back to where I started, but hopefully it’s more evolved. I feel I’ve stepped up my game. I’m experimenting with different chord changes and different areas of music. I feel I can do anything on this album, I’m relishing that. I feel like the sky’s the limit but at the same time it’s very raw. I think I’ll always do what I do and I’ll always write the way I do but I feel like it’s hopefully, again, taking it to a new level and it’s a lot of fun. Everything’s falling into place ready for a good year.” Delta’s new album is due out early this year coinciding with her recent announcement she’ll be joining the judging panel of the Australian version of The Voice alongside Keith Urban, Joel Madden and Seal.

Indian Inspiration

Our style guru, Sarah Blinco, discovers how colour and design derived from sultry Indian fashionistas can inject the ‘fabulous’ into your summer wardrobe.

C

reative, trendy and sexy – this party season is all about blending a little southAsian colour with your own individual style. Think chic scarves, bold jewellery and accessories, print maxi-dresses and floaty shirts. The best thing about this trend is that you can wear as little or as much colour as suits the mood and your personality – just be careful to balance the outfit with a few neutral and nude tones. Brighten up your look with colorful patterned dresses or skirts, accessorise with bindis and loud bangles, and keep an eye out for tribal prints and gold detail that lends inspiration from traditional Indian designs. Fringing is back in fashion as seen on the recent London and New York Fashion Week stages, as is vibrant colour - in particular deep reds, mustard, orange and gold, offset by earthy basics – black and brown.

Key pieces you can try today: Feminine floaty dresses which may be ‘dressed up’ with coats, shawls/scarves and boots.

Salt N Pepa The First Ladies of rap, Salt N Pepa, wowed fans at the Jupiters Pool Party last month with a sexy show-stopping performance of all their chart-topping hits from the past 25 years.

I

n a press conference before the show, Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton tells reporters how excited they were to be performing here on the Gold Coast. “When we come to Australia it’s just amazing,” Cheryl says. “The way they welcome us, our fans who have been dedicated to all our songs, it’s just been so fun.” The killer duo certainly made the most of their time at the pool party, performing an hour-long set to the excited audience. And after 25 years of performing, the girls really know how to get the party started. Their hunky male dancers hit the stage, much to the delight of their female fans, before the pair joined in and pleased partygoers with a performance of all their major hits including ‘Shoop’, ‘Whatta Man’, ‘Push It’ and ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’. When discussing the differences between their performances, comparing when they started out to now, the girls say the atmosphere at their shows these days is much more intimate. “We always give it our all, but we felt like we had to put on a show. Now our fans grew up with us, we’re all having a good time,” Cheryl

says. “Now it’s more like an old school party, it’s interactive.” An interactive, old school party is certainly what pool-goers got. The girls repeatedly engaged the crowds in their performance, even testing their old school hip hop knowledge with a question and answer sing-a-long. After finishing their set, the girls, although not keen to jump into the pool, encouraged the crowd to give them a soaking on stage. The duo were clearly having a great time and enjoying the party, living up to their “have fun” maxim. “Our motto before we go on stage; we say have fun. If you’re having fun, we’re having fun,” says Cheryl. However, it wasn’t always an easy road to get to where they are today. The girls tell us it was a huge leap of faith to hitch a ride on hip hop back when the media claimed it would be a passing fad. “It was such a male dominated field then, and still, so to breakdown the barriers we did, and do the platinum’s and continuously, you know, making hit after hit, we proved ourselves at a time when it was an overnight success,” says Sandra. “They thought it wouldn’t last and we’re still here 25 years later.” Their perseverance in such a tough industry certainly paid off and earned the pair the unofficial title of the “Queens of Hip Hop”. They have five studio albums under their belt which have all gone platinum or gold, along with three MTV Video Music Awards, and a

Grammy - making them the first female rap group to ever win a Grammy. The girls crashed into the male dominated industry with songs woman empowerment, paving the way for the female hip hop stars of today and creating music that has been loved by generation after generation. When asked about their favourite song they’ve recorded, the girls reply in unison ‘Shoop’. “‘Shoop’ is so fun. Hip hop is so misogynistic and they objectify women and it was our tongue-in-cheek way of flipping that and objectifying men, and the women adored that,” Cheryl says. “It was just a fun, fun song for us and still on stage we give that one a little extra.” The sassy duo remain humble, discussing how appreciative they are to still be around after such a long time and to still have people listening to their music. They tell us that even after performing for such a long time, they still rehearse frequently because they want to make it an amazing experience for the fans every time. “I think we were really blessed and fortunate to have made timeless music,” says Cheryl. “People of all ages still embrace it, love it.” In every performance, the girls reach out to the audience to find out exactly who is listening to their music, asking where their ‘90s babies, ‘80s babies, ‘70s babies and even ‘60s

31

babies are. The response never ceases to amaze them as it is always varied. “We’re always shocked by that, and appreciate that they appreciate our era of music,” says Sandy. “And that they’re not just locked into one sound.” The girls mention how their fans have been asking for years when they will be bringing out some new music. It looks like the fans will get their wish. “We actually have a song called ‘Shut it Down’ that we’ll be doing today that we’re looking to collaborate with some DJS out here to do a new mix.” Words: Ashleigh Brock

A

s if being talented, rich and famous isn’t enough, music artists of today are becoming increasingly peculiar with their backstage rider requests. The ‘rider’ being a contract that contains a list of artist demands that a promoter must meet before a show can go on. This generally includes preferred snacks, beverages, equipment and security. However, some would say, the document reads more like a child’s Christmas Wish List than a musician’s favourite amenities. Riders exist at all levels of the musical food chain but obviously the higher their profile; the more that artist will be pandered to. From a Malawi Orphan to a Nintendo Wii, a hot chook to white underwear, lit candles to blow up pools, fruits that aren’t in season, an iron and ironing board - we’ve seen it all! January 2012

For Summafieldayze 2012 headliner, Snoop Dogg, security is important (with his past, he’s gotta watch his back!). Atmosphere, vanilla ice cream, and dinner rolls are a must. But when it comes to “very important” matters, only one thing qualifies - a Sony PlayStation with four controllers and 1999 sport video cartridges. As these style video games are more than 10 years old, it looks like Snoop’s personal assistant would spend a lot of time searching e-Bay for the likes of Madden, Triple Play and NCAA College. And that was how it went down when the legendary US rapper rocked the stage at Summafieldayze. The total attendance at the festival was just shy of 35,000, says Summafieldayze promoter Billy Cross, as thousands of delirious fans,

32

and even some of the festival’s performers, tried to sneak a peek at the headline act as he was smuggled into Doug Jennings Park on The Spit. “You’ve never seen a crowd go as wild as they did for Snoop Dogg,” Billy says. “That guy must be bigger than (US President) Barack Obama. We have awesome acts like Pendulum, Moby, Calvin Harris ... but everything stopped for Snoop.” Although it’s amusing to hear what strange items and services stars require, it’s the quirky artist requests that make the challenge of delivering a show stopping event all the more rewarding. An artist’s wish is the promoter’s command – especially the Godfather of rap himself, Snoop Dogg.

BUSINESS SUCCESS

Proactive Prowess Make sure this is the year you ‘get it, and get ahead’! Sarah Blinco investigates some of the rules the world’s most proactive people follow on their paths to success.

E

ver wondered how those superbusy, expert job jugglers get ahead in business and also manage to maintain a fulfilled personal life? We’ve heard it all before, but efficiency does come down to appropriate time management. In fact, some experts suggest that it’s possible to compact a work week into minimal hours (indeed New York Times best-selling author Timothy Ferriss says we can achieve optimum results in just a 4-Hour Workweek – www.fourhourworkweek. com), leaving you free to enjoy other activities at leisure – golf, family BBQs, shopping... One glance at an already bulging January 2012 ‘to do’ list may indicate that four hours would be pushing it. But, in the spirit of being proactive towards success this New Year, why not consider some of these ideas in order to better balance your workload: Schedule email - this is a big one, so pay attention! Consider how much time you (or your employees) spend checking and answering emails each day, then consider what is really achieved by sorting an inbox. Not much is actually completed by the end of a workday when time is incessantly spent replying to or sending emails. Instead, schedule ‘email time’ for a certain period each day – eg. for half an hour from 10am, then another half an hour from 2.30pm. Sort through emails and reply to urgent messages – that’s it. By scheduling email work, time is freed up to complete other items on your tasks list. Work to a list - experts suggest capping it at eight to ten items each day – any more is overwhelming and probably not viable. Maintain a neat diary with your tasks in it, but do not write, re-write and sort your ‘to do’ lists – that is called procrastination! At the beginning of each morning (following a good breakfast with plenty of water) prioritise goals for the day and designate periods of time to

complete tasks. The brain needs a rest too - it’s recommended that we take mini-breaks every 60 to 90 minutes during the day to avoid lethargy and exhaustion. Pick up the phone - instead of email all the time. Often this saves you time in the end, as problems/issues/queries can be resolved in one clean sweep. It’s also a proactive manoeuvre – contacts like to hear your voice every now and then and this means you’re top of mind – above others who have sent emails.

The brain needs a rest too, so it’s recommended that we take minibreaks every 60 to 90 minutes during the day to avoid lethargy and exhaustion.

39

Women are encouraged by our esteemed ability to multi-task. It’s a brilliant quality, but sometimes one that can be disadvantageous. At times ‘multi-tasking’ can mean doing too many things at once and not completing any tasks to the highest standard required for optimum success. Instead, try working to fewer goals each day, but concentrating on each one and ensuring all loose ends are tied. Be strict about eliminating distractions. - Stop checking your phone, updating unnecessary profiles, Tweeting every five minutes or making everyone in the office cups of tea. Get on with the task/s at hand. This year, work backwards from your ‘big picture’ goals - devise weekly or monthly milestones and then complete tasks that will help you to achieve these milestones. You’ll soon be on the (highly efficient) road to success. Happy New Year!

ith Australia Day just around the corner, author and international psychologist, Dr Charles Margerison says that Captain Arthur Phillip, should be formally honoured as the Founding Father of Australia. He was the leader of the first European settlement in Australia, and our first Governor. Dr Margerison has travelled back in time to interview Governor Phillip via an amazing new concept known as BioView and is featured in the release of his latest title Amazing People of Sydney. A city tour unlike any other, Amazing People of Sydney takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of one of the world's most celebrated cities. Through BioViews, you can meet those who contributed to the business, the culture, the politics and other vital and fascinating aspects of Sydney. Not only is this a fascinating and educational opportunity for Australians to learn more about their own culture, it’s also beneficial to tourists visiting Australia who wish to soak in more than just the typical tourist sights during their visit. This new and unique series from The Amazing People Club has been developed by psychologist, Dr Margerison, and gives readers a ‘virtual opportunity’ to meet amazing people. The books and audios bring readers “face-toface” with many of the world’s most inspiring and influential characters. “Governor Phillip is the Columbus of Australia, without whom, Australia wouldn’t be what it is today,” says Dr Margerison. “In my view, Governor Phillip is under recognised and under appreciated in Australian life. We celebrate Australia Day, but it would not have been without Governor Phillip. Through his leadership and example, Arthur Phillip, was the founding father of Sydney, New South Wales and the

country of Australia. He was the first Australian hero.” Dr Margerison, who is also the founder of The Amazing People Club and a local resident of the Gold Coast, says Governor Phillip’s achievements deserve wider and fuller recognition. “His leadership in organising and safely coordinating the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 ships, with about 1500 people on board, in 1788, was outstanding by any standards,” he says. “In addition, his management of the convicts, the marines, officials and their families in the New South Wales colony over a five year period, between 1788 and 1792, was exceptional, given the extremely difficult and extraordinary conditions.” Dr Margerison’s new book, Amazing People of Sydney, is also written with respect to the Aboriginal people of New South Wales, whose lives were changed forever on January 18, 1788. “This book reflects the contributions of amazing people who have made their mark on Sydney. It’s written via the process of BioViews, where virtual interviews are recorded on events as we can imagine the participants would have seen them,” says Dr Margerison. “I trust the BioViews capture both the conditions of the times and the achievements that have turned Sydney from a convict colony to an exciting, elegant international city reflecting a mutli-ethnic democratic way of life. “I believe Australia needs to give Governor Phillip more credit, and that everyone should have a greater understanding of his story!”

H

i again fellow travellers,

Today I tell you about my recent trip to The Big Apple. It was my first time and I was beyond excited. Having been an avid fan of Sex and the City, Friends, Law and Order and other assorted New York based TV shows; I was so excited to see all the landmarks I had come to know. First stop: the Meat Packing District, Lower Manhattan, famous for its cobblestoned streets, exclusive and innovative boutiques, and Pastis, a cool French style café. I stayed right across the road at the Gansvoort Hotel. Dubbed “Sexy in the City” by the London Times and one of the top 10 hippest hotels, by Tripadvisor, I was immediately in love with my new home. I’m a sucker for rooftop bars and this one came complete with a heated pool complimented by underwater music. With

views over the Hudson River it was the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail after a full day of sightseeing. And sightsee I did. I had five days, which, by the way, is not enough, so I went hard! I ticked off all the must dos - the expected photo at Times Square, NBC Studio tour at the Rockefella Centre along with a trip to the 70th floor observation deck known as “Top of the Rock”. This gives you amazing views over the whole city, especially Central Park, which was my next stop for the essential horse and carriage ride. Of course, then it’s imperative to stroll down 5th Ave, past Tiffany’s, The Plaza, Bergdorfs and the giant Apple Store. From Seinfeld’s own Comedy Club to the 911 Memorial, you could literally fill two weeks with activities! NY is also well placed to pop over to Niagara Falls for a night. I never thought the Falls would interest me but they were spectacular. Staying on the Canadian side allows you a hotel room with amazing views, and a helicopter ride is a must to truly understand the size and power of this amazing landmark. Of course, a trip to Niagara would not be complete without a ride on the Maid of the Mist ferry, taking you right up to the base of the falls. We got saturated, but what a buzz! If you’re planning your trip to the Big

Apple, come and see me so I can help you make the most of it. Until next month, Cathy.

DINING REVIEW

Cafe nineteen the start of your sanctuary W

alking into Cafe Nineteen I knew I was in for an experience that would cover all my senses. Easily located at 5 Masthead Way, the gateway to Sanctuary Cove, I knew I was going to enjoy what was to come. My first impression was style. Cafe Nineteen was welcoming, the smells were inviting, the ambience and decor were tasteful and uplifting and I could see the restaurant ticking all the boxes and giving a wonderful canvas to take me to the next step; the menu. Owner Lorna Riley greeted my husband and I with a warm smile and I could tell by her enthusiasm that I’d soon be indulging on what would be a feast fit for three. We decided the best course of action would be to sample dishes to get a great feel for what Cafe Nineteen is known for; wonderful food and service (and knowledge a return visit wouldn’t be too far away). The extensive menu offers sumptuous variety with amazing breakfasts (which are offered until 3pm) and lunches that appeal to those who like to keep things light or something a little heartier to satisfy. There are no rules to the way you approach the menu. You can choose a starter, followed by a main and finish with dessert. Or, have a variety of smaller dishes and have a picnic at the table, which is what we chose. Having teased myself with the choices I ordered the Veggie Stack from the Breakfast Menu that came served with a selection of poached eggs, wilted spinach, tomato, mushrooms, avocado and incredible bubble n squeak (just like mama used to make). The turkish toast on the side made it that much easier to shovel into my unexpectantly ravenous face! There was a voice inside my head telling me I needed something cold to drink. I reached for the glass of water and felt that little voice kick me right between the eyes! Somehow, she knew I liked juices and smoothies so I found myself scanning the ample beverage list on the menu. But it wasn’t until I, by chance, flipped the menu over to the wine list that my little inner voice sang like an angel. Now, who can resist the sounds of an angel? I found my good friend Scotchman Hill Sauvignon Blanc , and set myself back on a collision course with culinary delight. My lips were smacking as the colourful and aromatic Beef, Lime and Noodle salad arrived! January 2012

Lordy, the beef was as tender as a Michael Buble love song and came atop a delicious mix of salad greens with a heavy smattering of rocket for that subtle peppery flavour, cherry tomatoes and crispy asian noodles all served with the most incredible lime dressing that almost made me get up and start singing... almost. Closely following was a magnificent Caesar Salad, a Cafe Nineteen signature dish, which distinguished itself as the best I had ever eaten! The poached egg, crisp lettuce, flavourful bacon and wholemeal croutons were knocked out of the park by the creamy dreamy dressing! You might be thinking by now, “Where does she put all that food?” The aforementioned husband isn’t very bright, but he’s goodlookin’, can carry heavy things and, man, he can eat! I easily distracted him with a shiny bauble so I could attack his Fisherman’s basket. The barramundi was tender and delicious, as was the prawn cutlet. I knew when I tasted the Salt and Pepper Calamari, with its light and heavenly coating, that i had had a very special dining experience. But there was no way I could leave this lovely place and lovelier staff without trying a dessert. The voice inside my head, aided by a wonderful glass of Richland Pinot Grigio, made the choice of Banoffi, the signature dessert of Cafe Nineteen. A crunchy biscuit base cocoons the banana, caramel and chocolate centre, and is covered with fresh cream. This was not just a dessert. this was a taste sensation that grabbed you by the taste buds and screams, “Eat me, damn it!” It took another distraction move with a shiny bauble to keep the hubby’s grubby mitts off my Banoffi - I was not sharing! The service at Cafe Nineteen was superb! I take my hat off the Lorna and her talented team of professional and friendly staff. Not only was Lorna outstanding, the rest of her staff were every bit as enthusiastic, professional and capable. I left Cafe Nineteen looking forward to the next visit with as many people I could gather. This isn’t the kind of place you keep a secret. I recommend everyone go and soak up the wonderful experience offered at Cafe Nineteen. Many say you can’t please everybody. Lorna says “Why not?” “Simple, delicious food cooked superbly with service that always exceeds your expectations!”

LIFESTYLE STARS

ASTRO GIRL Capricorn ~ December 22 ~ January 20 This is your month to shine. You need to really scrutinise and plan your career and financial situation. Reassess what you’ve learnt from those around you and determine how you’ll make decisions to move forward. This is the month where you’ll have the most impact so try not to let the burdens of those you love be the thing that holds you back. Aquarius ~ January 21 ~ February 19 You are the natural humanitarian and January will see you putting your skills to the test. You’ll feel empowered to help those you love without taking it on for yourself. Pay attention to your spending and make investments with caution. You’ll have a lot more responsibility this year and your finances will help you through. Pisces ~ February 19 ~ March 20 There will be times when you’re wondering what you’re doing and with whom. Use your intuition to guide you and let your instincts give you the answers you’re looking for. Take time to reflect on your goals for this year and prioritise them, rather than trying to achieve them all at once. Aries ~ March 20 ~ April 19 Take the lead; it’s your birth right to do so. Just remember that sometimes you need to take others with you. You’ve had a lot on your mind in 2011, and 2012 is the time for you to start making your moves. Seek the counsel of people you trust and allow yourself to move with the finesse that you’ve built your reputation on.

Virgo ~ August 23 ~ September 22 Start the year off by analysing your priorities. A positive attitude will help you to see how you can get things done effectively and efficiently. Providing a service for others is in your nature and you need to capitalise on your ability to help others and donít forget to help yourself in the process. Libra ~ September 22 ~ October 23 Don’t sit on the fence too long this month. January is the time to start to make some decisions about your future for this year. Trying to be fair to everyone around you will hold you back, so look at how you can be fair to yourself. Remember that giving is admirable, but allowing yourself to receive will be the fuel that propels you forward this month. Scorpio ~ October 23 ~ November 22 Looking into things too deeply can be distracting and take you off course. Don’t forget how resourceful you are and allow yourself to be empowered by your many skills and talents for getting the job done. Try not to worry yourself about what you can’t control and focus on what you can. January will see you very productive and moving ahead faster than you think. Sagittarius ~ November 22 ~ December 22 Take the initiatives you’ve been pondering to set those travel plans in motion. January is a great time to take the first step towards gaining your much loved freedom to explore and go on an adventure. Avoid situations that hem you in and don’t ruin a good story with the truth.

Taurus ~ April 20 ~ May 21 Try not to be too black and white in your approach this month. January is a good time to look at the new opportunities coming your way. Put your five senses to good use and start the New Year off with all the possibilities of bringing you the security you need to build on this year. Gemini ~ May 21 ~ June 21 Don’t over-think things this month. This is a great opportunity to learn from others and take stock of what you want to achieve this year. January is a great month to identify how you can learn from others and what you’ll need to teach them in return and Gemini loves to communicate what they know. Cancer ~ June 21 ~ July 22 Family commitments and responsibilities can weigh you down this month. This is a good time to pay attention to your finances and prioritise your financial commitments with others. Just remember that you’re not the only one who needs to look after everyone. Let others take on the role a bit more. You might be surprised at how well they do. Leo ~ July 22 ~ August 23 January is not a good time to let your pride get in the way. This is a really good time to shine. Use your creativity and determination to set your goals for 2012 and then start the ball rolling. Get organised and then share your visions with those around you. Remember your passion and drive will always take you where you want to go and don’t forget to share it with the ones you love.
