Sarah Tucker – This program was exactly the kickstart I needed after putting on a lot of weight during my pregnancy. I was struggling to find the motivation I needed to lose the last 10kgs. I came across ElectroSlim and the rest is history. The eating plan is easy to follow and has instant results. In the first week I lost over 2kg! The treatments are relaxing but you can feel your muscles working at the same time and it doesn’t take long before you can notice the difference. In the 4 weeks I was on the ElectroSlim treatments I lost over 6kgs, over 49cm off my body and dropped a dress size. I have stuck to the eating plan and started exercising lightly a couple of times a week and soon I had lost over 12kg and another dress size. The ladies at ElectroSlim are amazing. Without them and this program I would have never achieved my goal weight. Alex Walton – This program is very easy to follow with instant results. When you see the scales falling lower than you have seen in years it gives you the motivation you need to keep going. I lost 10kg in 4 weeks on the ElectroSlim program.

SHORTY’s ! t u o sh social | COMMenT

Living by the Bart Simpson code of ethics: “It wasn't me, I didn't do it!” Shorty sets our pages alight with brutal honesty and quick wit on topics that really get him going.

H

i everyone, welcome back to the real world. I trust you all had a great break over the festive season and didn’t over indulge yourselves too much! Unfortunately I did, so now it’s back to the gym to shed the three or four kilos of Christmas cheer that seems to have gathered around my waist! Ah...The good old gym. Why do we torture ourselves? The sweat, smell, aches and pains, inferiority because the person on the machine next to you looks like they’ve just stepped out of a magazine. On the plus side, it can be a great place to meet that special someone. I walked into the gym the other day and was immediately confronted by an absolutely stunning girl working up a sweat on the treadmill. Blonde, tanned, six pack to die for, clad in the cheekiest little outfit. There I was, standing in my boardies and AC/DC T-shirt in a world of my own appreciating the spectacular scenery when Matt, my personal trainer, snuck up behind me with a very loud “ahem!” Oh great, busted by everyone in the gym. While waiting for the colour to drain from my face, I quietly asked Matt: “If i wanted to impress that girl, which machine should I use?” He looked at her, then looked at me, leaned in close and whispered: “the atm

outside”. Seriously though, it’s a great place to meet people. The good thing is; you’re seeing the real person in all their natural glory. With the computer age we seem to have lost the plot when it comes to the dating game. Internet dating sites all promising you the most romantic time of your life. Yeah right! Aside from putting pictures on the site that were taken 15 years ago, or touched up via photoshop, some of the descriptions are a bit fancifull. “Athletic male, in his 40’s, financially secure” means he walks to the pub every arvo, thinking that will get rid of his beer belly, on his next birthday he’ll be 50 and he’s only got two payments left on his Commodore! And girls, you don’t escape either. “Cuddly, caring mum, outgoing personality, non-smoking social drinker” translates to needs to go to the gym (see you there) has two rampant teenagers, loves a glass (or 12!) of Sav Blanc and smokes like a chimney after the first six. Then there’s the: “Male, single, unattached needs loving relationship with like minded female”. Reality is, his wife and kids are on holiday and he’s after a bit on the side! Okay, yes I’m a bit of a cynic, but what’s wrong with the good old-fashioned

10

approach? You know, down at your local venue, you see someone that attracts you and you boldly approach with “hi, can I buy you a drink?” After a quick search on Google, iIestimate there are at least 10,000 single men and woman between the age of 20 and 50 on the Gold Coast alone. now, if every one of them got off their computers (and their bums) and joined the real world every pub, club, RSL and nightclub would have an abundant supply of eligible singles to make going out the pleasure it once used to be. The great thing about it is there’s no being stood up, no misleading photos and you can always say no to the drink. I love wining and dining (and being single) and we have some fantastic venues where you can dance the night away with live music from our very talented local musos. That’s about it from me this time but if you see me galloping around on a white thoroughbred, I’ve probably had too much too drink, so could you please ask the guy to stop the merry-go-round so I can get off?

Take care and be safe. Shortness. Drop me a line: shortster@bigpond.com

Caught Out! Guess who we caught out for a little frightful fun? Steven Bradbury!

F

orever more, in Australian sporting mythology, the name Steven Bradbury will be frozen in time at that extraordinary moment when the speed skater found himself the only one left standing to snare Australia's first ever Winter Olympic gold. Of all Australia's victories in the Olympic Games, Bradbury’s unforeseen win undoubtedly takes the prize for 'most bizarre'. It was the year 2002 at the short-track speed skating final at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Games. The athletes are at the starting line. The gun goes of and it’s a dead heat for almost the entire length of the 1000m track... well, it was a dead heat between everyone except Bradbury.

Far off the pace in the final, Bradbury sees all four of his rivals collide, tumble and sprawl themselves around the ice on the final corner while jostling for the gold medal. “You beauty!” This allowed the Australian, who was around 15 m behind with only 50m to go, to avoid the pile-up and take the victory. The man who only two months prior was “Steven who?”, was from then on world-famous as “The Accidental Hero”.

But it was no accident when the man of the moment skid on into Dracula’s on the Gold Coast. Up for a night of spine-tingling, devilishly good humour as the Dracula’s crew engulfed him in a world of Vampyre mayhem. It was, once again, his time to shine as he became Australia’s golden child in front of an international crowd who adored him. Steven Bradbury, you just got snapped!

Stafford Brothers Your exclusive backstage pass as the brother duo write, record and perform with the most respected names in the music industry, all on their quest to become the world’s No. 1 DJs.

I

f the sibling duo of electro house DJs, Stafford Brothers, doesn’t ring a bell, then one must wonder where you’ve been hiding for the past decade. Certainly not in the clubs, where the Stafford Brothers are sure sell-out headliners in every state around the country. And you can’t have been to any festivals in Australia because if you had, you would have seen the brothers in action at any one of them. And surely you haven’t been tuned into the radio, where the Staffords’ own productions and remixes peak at the top end of the club and dance charts and are hot request favourites. In fact, with the release of the second series of the bothers’ hit self-titled TV show, one must pose the question that if you haven’t heard of the Stafford Brothers, have you been on this planet at all? Let’s give you a quick run down. The Stafford Brothers, Matt and Chris Stafford, are the epitome of the words ‘party boy’. Ranked as the No. 1 DJs in Australia for 2011 by inthemix.com, the brothers play in front of thousands of fans in clubs and festivals February 2012

around the globe, rub shoulders with the biggest names in the dance and electronic music industry, and by the looks of their FOX8 reality show, The Stafford Brothers, have crazy amounts of fun along the way. But we all know the fun times never come about without first putting in the hard yards and the Stafford Brothers are two of our country’s hardest working DJs with a schedule that would make anyone’s head spin. Gold Coast boys at heart, the pair began their DJing careers right here in Surfers Paradise. Playing sets at their rugby club locale, Matt and Chris secured a spot on Saturday nights DJing to a crowd mostly made up of their friends. “We sort of both fell into it by accident,” says Chris. “We used to drink at Billy’s Beach House on the Coast and that was our first gig. We used to go there every Thursday and Saturday and the opportunity came up and we’re like, ‘yeah, yeah, we can DJ’.” “We basically lied to get our first gig,” Matt smirks. “We said we could mix but we couldn’t really. We filled the place up with all

12

our mates and it went off!” Catching the eye of other local club owners and building a small but strong fan following, the boys became known as the ‘Stafford Brothers’ DJing at numerous clubs around town. “I used to DJ in Brisbane three times a week and Matt would DJ on the Gold Coast two times, and then we’d come together on a Saturday,” Chris recalls. “We were playing gigs and splitting $25 an hour. Less than the bar staff, but we were having more fun.” Fate, some might say, but the brothers like to think music always ran strong in their blood. “Matt always said he wanted to be in a rock band - he had posters of AC/DC around his walls. I had posters of Ace Ventura and stuff so who knows what I wanted to be?” Chris laughs. “But there’s definitely music in our family. You go to our Christmas dinners and our grandpa’s playing the guitar, my dad’s playing guitar, my mum’s got a tambourine we call her Tambourine Trish ... So, you know, it was always going to happen.” But the pair admit it hasn’t been the

quickest, or the smoothest, rise to the top. “You look at Avicii who had that massive hit, ‘Levels’, and he’s instantly put into the Superstar DJ sort of thing - some people want to get there quite quickly. We’ve been doing it for eight to 10 years [and] from the last six years it’s really taken off,” says Chris. He’s not wrong! Last year, the Stafford Brothers played live in front of more than 800,000 fans around the world. This year the numbers are set to rise with tours featured in Thailand, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Germany, Holland and Australia. The brothers credit part of their success to luck saying their big break came about eight years ago when they scored a reality TV gig on the hit music network, Channel V. “We won a competition to go to Ibetha. It was my brother, myself and two other girls, and we had a week of partying. [We had] chefs, free entry to all the clubs, VIP treatment, and we filmed four half hour shows,” says Chris. “I think that was a bit of a break and it changed our music style as well. It was definitely a big turning point.” Now, after the success of the six-part TV series showcasing the Stafford Brothers on tour across Europe, Matt and Chris are in the midst of launching the second season of their selftitled TV series, The Stafford Brothers. WD Entertainment Group (owned by TV host and Producer Wes Dening) announced the news only days before heading to Thailand to start filming on location. The New York based producer and creator of the series has promised this time it’s not just two brothers DJing on the road, “this time it’s personal!” “I’ve seen the first few episodes and I think season one has nothing on season two. It’s really stepped up and it’s looking good,” says Matt. “The first one was filmed in a five-week process, so it was really quick. This time we’ve gone to a lot more countries, it was filmed over a longer period (it was a whopping nine months to put this bad boy to bed) and we also had time for stuff like the diary rooms ... It’s really got on side with each of the characters and you’re really seeing us and I think that’s really cool.” Season two of The Stafford Brothers exposes the drama and personal turmoil for the DJ duo, fighting to stay on top of the ultra-lucrative entertainment industry. As their nightclub and music empire continues

to expand, drama and chaos consume their personal lives. Chris admits he’s been under immense pressure to produce a chart-topping track. “Actually coming up with a No. 1 track, that’s something we’ve never done,” he says. “Because Matt’s more the management side of us and I’m the more musical side, I feel there’s a lot more pressure on myself because I’m the one in the studio trying to make the songs. Obviously Matt has a lot of input too, but if we’re not producing tracks, everyone looks at me and their like ‘what have you been doing? Get off your arse’,” he laughs. In the next installment of The Stafford

Brothers, we also see Matt’s infamous and unorthodox relationship with Australia’s top bikini model Brooke Evers come under more pressure than ever when Brooke re-locates to Sydney to pursue a “real” career in journalism, while also performing and touring as a female DJ herself under the love/hate guidance of her DJ mentor and new boss, Joey. “We don’t even see each other which is very difficult,” says Matt. “I used to see her a couple of days a week. She’s just had three weeks off for summer from her job and I’ve seen her two and a half days - and that was when she was

13

on the Gold Coast, now she’s in Sydney! So I’m going home now, next week, and she’s not going to be there. She’s following her career, which is great, but it’s definitely making things tough.” Although the stress and distance between them seems trying, Matt says they’ve been together for over six years and their relationship is still strong. “It’s taken a different turn but I really like where we’re at right now. But I would like to see her,” he says almost pouting. The second series will also bring viewers deep into the life of Joey, the Stafford Brothers’ uncompromising manager and nightclub owner. “We’re travelling all around the world with some pretty big people and doing some amazing festivals. There’s a lot more happening,” says Matt. “We’ve got two new nightclubs happening on the Gold Coast which Joey’s been building and developing. [Episode three] shows the whole opening of the new club (Love Nightlife, Broadbeach). And then there’s Shuffle in Surfers Paradise - it’s pumping at the moment. It’s exciting!” The next step for the Stafford Brothers is moving to the US (hopefully) to film the third season. “If FOX give us the ‘okay’, we’ll be doing it as soon as we move to America. The end of March is when we’re going to move to L.A.,” Chris reveals. “The new single we’ve got coming, which is called ‘Miami Is Calling’, has a little bit of a story to it - how we’re heading to the States ... We’ve got another song called ‘Falling’ so I hope our career isn’t doing that,” Matt quips. “And we’ve also got another one called ‘Pressure’, so I guess they’re all kind of relevant to what we’re doing at the moment.” As for the future, the brothers say they’d like to see themselves “at the top of the game”. “We always put or hands in a say, ‘play it like it’s your last gig’ and give it everything,” says Matt. “We’ve got huge goals we want to achieve, and I think this American move is going to be a big risk for us and hopefully that comes off, and within five years we’ll be touring the world...in private jets,” Chris smiles. Catch The Stafford Brothers exclusively on FOX8.

CELEB NEWS

American pop and dance singersongwriter Wynter Gorden creates a splash at the Jupiters Pool Party with a double dose of ‘Dirty Talk’.

n o d r o G r e t n y W I

t seems Wynter came early this year for Jupiters Hotel & Casino with pop princess Wynter Gordon taking the stage. On the tail end of her sojourn on the Gold Coast, the dancing dynamo wowed fans with a sexy yet playful performance including two playbacks of her No. 1 smash hit ‘Dirty Talk’. “Kitten heels, lingerie, pantyhose, foreplay. Legs up on the bar, in the back of your car…” are just some of the catchy lyrics that turned this former gospel singer into the singing sensation she is today. The smash hit is said to have started as a playful pun, but once the track caught wind it skyrocketed to the top of the music charts. The 26-year-old songstress says the song was just a joke she and a friend were mucking around with in the studio before it somehow went viral. “I think [with] a lot of hit records, and talking to my writer friends, that always happens,” she says. “Me and my friend, Nicole, we had been in this one studio all summer long, because we’re both writers, and just churning out songs – we had had hundreds of songs – and this (‘Dirty Talk’) wasn’t specifically for me, it was just like, ‘oh let’s have fun’,” she smiles. “I had a melody and it just came together! We were laughing and joking … we were like, ‘this is so funny, this would never be on the radio, no one would ever play this, it’s so dirty!’ And then it goes online and a few months later it got millions of hits and it was history! I was a little bit mortified, honestly,” she laughs. Despite its success, the singer admitted the song “was a blessing and a curse” revealing she was soon pigeonholed as “something I really wasn’t”. With her mum being evangelist, you could say Wynter had a fairly strict upbringing and was shocked at how the public grabbed onto the track. “A lot of people are judging me off ‘Dirty Talk’ and although that was the most amazing song and it did so much for my life and I’m really proud of that moment … In every interview I did it was ‘how dirty are you? Can you be more dirty?’ I was like, ‘it’s not all about being a sexual woman, there are other parts’,” she reveals. “My mum, who is into church, didn’t really say anything, she was just like, ‘mmmhhmm, yep, I’m so glad you are doing music’. She didn’t really comment on the song, she just said she was going to ‘leave it between you and Jesus’,” she laughs. “My mum was proud of me [but] she didn’t know how to take it. She felt like it was an Oprah moment, she was like, ‘I heard your song in the laundry mat, I didn’t know what to do

– I didn’t know if I should scream or if I should cry.’ But my family were very supportive.” Now, in a bid to break free of her stereotype as a sultry dance artist, Wynter will be releasing an entirely free album titled April Fools. “I want to get out of the nightclub scene … and play a little more of the things that are more in my heart,” she says. “I’m working on mixing up ‘90s, ‘80s pop with some future sounds, and just working on a whole new thing and getting my passion and my spirit out there, because I don’t think that the world has seen who I am yet. “I wanted to use my band for this, I wanted to use live music, I wanted it to sound like a live album. So when it’s played in front of a live audience it’s like it was made for festivals. It’s big!” Although remaining tight-lipped about the track details, Wynter did admit her biggest inspiration for the album was Phil Collins. “It was really things that had been on my heart. A lot of deep emotions, a big relationship break-up that I just went through – not in terms of romantic but just a new change in my life. It’s about the coming of age and new things happening,” she says. “I find that the best inspiration for me comes

15

from pain and heartbreak, and when there’s a huge change in my life. “Right now I’m going through the biggest transition and really fighting for who I am, and what I believe in and what I stand for. I was compromising before and this project is about no compromise … and I want to give it away for free!” “I just want to do something for me. I think my fans who have come up with me now, they really appreciate just getting something new.” April Fools will be available for download online from February 1. Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey.

BEAUTY STYLE

Love it up, love it down, love it all the way around! Amanda Higl, shares her tips and tricks for having the perfect hair and make-up on your very special day.

F

ebruary brings the day of love: Valentine’s Day. For many of you, the day of your dreams comes closer with a magical proposal and then you hit the ground running ready to plan the biggest and best day of your life to date: your wedding! There are so many things to organise; the venue, celebrant, photographer, dress but the most under rated part of your planning you need to think the most about is your hair and make-up. My best piece of advice is being well prepared in the hair and make-up department and make sure you always have a trial. It’s what completes your look for the day and, most importantly, results in how you feel on the day.

Love your hair It’s time to get clicking ladies. Scan the internet for images of hair-dos you like and choose something you absolutely love – you’ll find the styles we have our hearts set on are usually what suits us best. Think about your dress and how your hair will complete your look. Keep it realistic; know what your hair is capable of and then it will remain in place. Your hairstylist can help you with this at your trial. Hair is the most important element set to complement your dress. But you need to choose wisely. Your do can either make or break your entire look. Preparing your hair for the big day is also

important and takes more than a fiveminute wonder treatment. Prior to the big day – about six months prior – you should be indulging in regular treatments, good quality shampoo and conditioner and regular trims to keep your locks in tip top shape. The result? Luminous shine. The day before your wedding, do not put a treatment in your hair as it may result in your hair “dropping”. Rather, wash your hair twice with shampoo, towel dry extra well, apply conditioner to the ends only and rinse like you have never rinsed before as any traces of conditioner will leave your hair heavy (not so good for a wedding day do) and could possibly leave you looking oily and slick. Before drying apply root lift moose, and nothing else! Blast your hair dry – upside-down to achieve maximum lift – and enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

Love your make-up Let’s face it, we all look like a much better version of ourselves with make-up on! And it’s amazing what a professional make-up artist can do without making you look like you’re off to a fancy dress parade. When searching for your flawless look keep in mind that whatever picture you find you will have to wear more make-up than your day to day look for photographic purposes and lasting power and so did the star for that shot. While we’re on the topic of stars, their make-up is airbrushed on for a flawless finish and 24-hour longevity and yours

16

should be too. Your make-up must take you from morning photos to very late in the night looking as perfect as it did when you walked down the isle. Preparing your skin is a must in the months leading up to your big day. Much like your hair, you should be starting about six months prior. The surface of your skin is what the make-up will sit on therefore creating a smooth, bump free surface means your make-up base will be sensational. Opt for a course of microdermabrasion or peels; consult your beauty specialist on what treatments are best suited to your skin, as well as some good-quality skin care. Drinking plenty of water and committing to a good exercise regime will ensure that glow also comes from within.

Love your look Everything you do in the lead up to your big day aids in creating your perfect bridal look. Hunt for your favourite hair and make-up images, book your hairstylist and make-up artist early and have a trial so you can see your whole look come together. Love is the theme of the day and, from head to toe, you need to love every bit of it! For more info: www.amandahigl.com.au Photograph by Jamae Bridal Studio Sanctuary Cove

Royal chic t

he entire world tuned in to their tV sets on April 29, as dashing Prince William wed his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton. Not since his mother lady Diana married William’s father Prince Charles in 1981, had the palace seen such a huge following. And so once again the royal family found a style muse in Princess Catherine. they’re the tinseltown weddings that have inspired the style of modern brides for decades. From Grace Kelly and her iconic cinched-waist silk gown in 1956, to Jacqueline Bouvier in layers of silk taffeta in 1953, Hollywood has long been providing the world with iconic bridal style. One lady who knows all too well about chic bridal style is Paula tangredi of Jemae Australia. Representing modern contemporary designer bridal and formal wear “with a difference”, Paula says her team are

dedicated to designing elegant and refined styles with inspiration from Australian lifestyles and influences from the latest european fashion trends. “Our primary focus is attention to detail on cutting edge styles and garment fit which enhances the feminine silhouette,” says Paula. In May, Paula was contacted by the Hyatt Regency requesting if she would contribute to their annual bridal expo. “As Kate Middleton had just recently been married, it was suggested the expo would be themed on the Royal Wedding.” Unaccustomed to making copies, Paula and her team at Jemae took up the challenge and designed a gown inspired from the Royal gown but adaptable to the Australian climate and lifestyle. A statement piece to say the least, the stunning three-piece ensemble consisted of a strapless gown, detachable

long train and organza bolero to really top off the entire look. On the day of the Hyatt Bridal expo, a raffle was held with all proceeds going to the Make a Wish Foundation. the top prize; the Princess Catherine inspired gown by Jemae. the winner, elizabeth turnbell, was ecstatic! true to its signature, the Jemae gown was made with luxurious fabrics and highest quality construction. the stunning effects of these combinations captured the essence and passion of the entire Jemae collection and set the theme for the most wonderful wedding day. Married on January 5, 2012 at the Hyatt Chapel, Nicolas theodotou watched his soon-to-be bride, elizabeth, float down the isle wearing Jemae’s design feeling, like a princess herself. “Our motto is ‘style, elegance, Chic’,” says Paula. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Saving Grace

Grace Gawler, founder and director of the Grace Gawler Institute for Integrated Cancer Solutions in Queensland, is best known for her pioneering work in cancer support medicine, psycho-oncology and collaborative cancer medicine. This month she shares her story. February 2012

18

COVER STORY

T

he year Grace turned five marked a significant time in her life. She became aware of a world of possibilities, declared her vegetarianism to her amazed family and began to explore what it truly meant to be gifted. Of course, at such a young age Grace was unaware of her “abilities” but rather fascinated by the “magic” that would emanate out of her tiny hands. “I made a hobby of collecting damaged creatures and would use this magic to make them well again, then set them free,” she says. “Those that died were buried in our garden, however my success rate was reasonable enough to fuel my passion and encourage further exploration.” By the age of 10 Grace’s explorations led her towards an avid interest in science and medicine. When friends or relatives succumbed to illness, she’d spend hours; days; weeks; even months researching about their diseases in books from the local library. “I questioned why and pondered on what might have been done to help them,” she explains. Little did she know it would be a question that would dawn on her for the rest of her life. After graduating high school, Grace followed her bliss into veterinary nursing as an entreecard to studying veterinary science. “It is [now] clear that my early years were preparing me for a journey, a healing path that at 21 years of age, would lead me to amazing self discovery,” says Grace. It was here Grace met her first love - a young veterinarian by the name of Ian Gawler. Just as she felt the wind under her feet, their lives changed dramatically. Ian was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, an aggressive cancer that attacks the bones and central immune system. “His prognosis was poor, but undaunted,” says Grace, who soon became Ian’s full-time carer. She saw Ian through hundreds of treatments, both alternative and medical, analysed and recorded their successes and failures, the constant emotional demands, the highs and the lows, the minute-by-minute sacrifices, all scorned by pronouncements of imminent death. Ian was given only five per cent chance of survival but Grace refused to give up hope. When conventional medicine alone deemed ineffective Grace took a different approach. Using her knowledge of wellbeing and healing linked to nutrition and psycho-oncology, she implemented an intensive dietary regimen, meditation and immunotherapy into Ian’s treatment. “It was a blessing that my mother was very conscious of healthy food so I had a good beginning with regards to nutrition,” says Grace who was dedicating 18-hours a days to juicing, massages, pain management, while

researching every cure imaginable. “However his deterioration and subsequent two-week prognosis just after our marriage, led us to explore psychic healing that was on offer in the Philippines.” Imagine the calibre of one so young who married a cancer patient with such a bleak prognosis. But Grace remained optimistic. “The next stage of my life had begun ... Ian was to receive thousands of hours of what the Filipinos called ‘magnetic healing’; my magic hands had found their destiny!” she smiles. “As an adjunct to our Philippines experience, the continual flow of healing energy that I was able to give with love was a significant contribution towards his full recovery. The healing sessions helped to put the flesh back on his bones, reduce his pain and increase his wellbeing.” A miracle? Or just plain science? Grace says many people thought the cure lay in simply changing their diet and meditating, but that wasn’t the case. “Ian underwent more than 31 different kinds of treatments, including potent chemotherapy which he undertook long after he learnt to meditate,” she reveals. “When Ian was sick, he had constant and unremitting support. He had someone to do the work, the preparation. He didn’t do this alone.” In You Can Conquer Cancer (1984) Ian is quoted: “Many individuals contributed to my recovery. My wife [Grace] played the most significant role by far. If everyone could have a person in their life so capable of showering total, loving care on them as [Grace] has for me, disease would be a thing of the past. She has shared in all my trials and efforts and, most importantly, right from the start she always knew I would get better. No doubts she knew - and remained devoted to helping me do it. As many have found since, she has a wonderful ability to determine what is the right thing at the right time.”

It is [now] clear that my early years were preparing me for a journey, a healing path that at 21 years of age, would lead me to amazing self discovery, Ian’s remission, declared in 1978, occurred concurrently with a diagnosis of tuberculosis and the birth of their first child. The couple moved to Yarra Junction east of Melbourne where they developed cancer support groups - the first in Australia. In 1981 Grace and Ian co-founded the Melbourne Cancer Support Group, a lifestyle-based 12-week self-help program for people with cancer in Australia. The program was based upon the Grace’s experiences in bringing about Ian’s recovery. Two years later, Grace and Ian established

19

the Australian Cancer Patients Foundation, which later became known as the Gawler Foundation, helping thousands of cancer patients gain hope and lead better lives. Somewhere in between four children, running their farm and Foundation, Grace developed methods for helping women with breast cancer and authored, Women of Silence. She became known as a pioneer of cancer support medicine especially for emotional healing in breast cancer. But while Ian’s survivor story gathered public momentum and accolades, the carers fell by the wayside, something Grace says is common in the cancer picture, and in 1996, Grace resigned her position as co-director of the foundation in 1996. Disaster struck the following year when Ian unexpectedly left the family. A few days later, in shock, Grace experienced a uterine prolapse. Basic repair surgery went wrong and her major health crisis began. She would lose most of her colon. “During that surgery, all the innovation that went into my lower colon and into my bladder was completely paralysed,” Grace explains. Now after 22 years of loving service, the caregiver and guide for Ian and thousands of cancer patients was struggling for her life. Grace battled on with little support - selling all she owned to pay for surgeries. She still had three children at home. She endured 17 serious operations but through her extensive research, she became a world first bionic colon recipient, requiring revolutionary surgery in Holland in 2003. The Dutch, impressed by her will to live, made the surgery possible. Grace enjoyed six good years building her cancer work until her bionics stopped in late 2008. After two failed surgeries in Australia, her partner, Pip Cornall, and friends raised money for her surgery in Singapore. After a long convalescence Grace attained good health in late 2009. Despite near-death experiences and financial hardship, Grace’s February 2012

spirit is vibrant, and obvious to those she meets and warmly felt by her cancer patients. She has consistently proved she won’t run out of options for them, they just need the will to keep going. Now, after nearly four decades of working in the business of cancer, Grace Gawler believes it’s well and truly time it was given an extreme makeover. “Cancer needs a makeover, and really the makeover is changing the community’s consciousness and awareness about cancer and making that difference from what’s been available in the past to what’s available now,” she says. “Cancer will soon be treated as a chronic degenerative illness, there is tremendous progress. People will have spot treatments when they have recurrences and it won’t be the ghastly thing it was. Patients have to play their part in that, and that’s the second bit of people coming earlier. Too often people come to me as a last resort so by that time they’re tired, they’re sick, they’re frightened, they feel like they’ve got no hope and they don’t know what to do next. You can turn people around by giving them realistic hope, not false hope. I have a health restoration plan which includes things they can do practically, as stress free as possible [with] minimal supplements, sensible diet and they go, ‘I can do that’, and then once they’ve got the oncology onboard, those two, if people put those together, it’s a really powerful package.”

Last year, Grace was nominated for the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Excellence in Health Care award. A proponent of “collaborative cancer medicine”, a multidisciplinary team approach, she works closely with oncologists, specialists and GPs for the patient’s benefit. “We’re about educating people to say, if aunt Nelly died and had a really rough time with cancer 30 years ago...today’s really different. It’s using high tech medicine so there’s nothing alt. med. about it. It’s just overseas countries are more advanced. And for some reason, just like my neuro-stimulating device, if the box isn’t ticked, a lot of those things won’t be here for a long time.” As for the future, the Grace Gawler Institute is raising funds to purchase a premises creating a new Centre of Excellence in cancer care located at Paradise Point. “A Centre that will put the Gold Coast on the Map”, says Grace. “They say if we want to make God laugh, mention our plans! Life did not take the road that I expected; rather my life became a hands-on healing road test; a synergy of all that I had learned and practiced before. A lot of people say, ‘is this work depressing?’ I’ve always found that working with cancer patients is really uplifting – it’s a really interesting way of bring about change in communities.” Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey

COVER STORYwith Adele Rowlands-Dealey

Catherine McNeil After taking a two-year break from the fast world of fashion modelling, the Australian beauty is back and set to rock our shores in style. February 2012

24

A

fter a couple of years of shifted focus, the stunning Catherine McNeil is ready to return to her career in front of the camera. Her first stop: shooting her comeback campaign for local swimwear powerhouse Seafolly. Shooting with the brilliant David Gubert for the Seafolly Preview Campaign at Sydney’s illustrious Bondi Beach late last December, the glamazon was welcomed back with open arms. Seafolly CEO Anthony Halas says Catherine originally represented Seafolly back in 2008. “She looked completely stunning then and is just, if not more, breathtaking now. We are delighted to be uniting her once more for our upcoming preview campaign. Welcome back Catherine,” he adds. Despite an unpleasant combination of spitting rain and stirred up sand on an unseasonably miserable day, 22-year-old homegrown beauty was in fine form showing off her dark golden tan and just-mussed, bandana bound hair-do. Although, giggling to herself, Catherine admits she had a little help in that department. “I have just arrived from New York City. I was completely white!” she laughs. “[But] thanks to Tan Temple in Bondi, I am now chocolate.”

Poured into a bright orange one piece with pleated panels and a ruffle front detail – my personal Seafolly standout design for the day – Catherine cuddles close to the similarly sunkissed Jack Vanderhart who, at just 17 years old (and shirtless!), had every woman and her Chihuahua pup feeling a little guilty for staring. “It has Latino influences,” Seafolly’s head designer Genelle Walkom explains. “You can see it in the little pleats and frills and bright, bright colour.” Although I’m quite sure if Catherine had been wearing a potato sack and donning a ’70s-style Afro do, she’d still be wowing the crowd. Standing at 5’11” with long limbs and a beaming smile, Catherine elegantly embodies all the elements of an Australian girl-next-door…in a fierce supermodel kind of way. From the young age of 13, Catherine was deemed “the face to watch” after winning a national modelling competition in 2003. For the next three years, the self-confessed “Bogan from Logan” combined her love of motorbikes with modelling before packing her bags and saying goodbye to the only home she’d ever known ready to strut the catwalks of Australia’s fashion capital, Sydney. She

25

quickly secured work with mainstream labels including Peter Alexander and retail giant Myer, as well as Cue, Simona, Allannah Hill, Sportsgirl, Colorado and Kookai, but it wasn’t long before the bright lights and big city vibe of overseas fashion markets captivated her and, in 2007, Catherine and her devoted grandmother, Sandra, flew to New York City where she caught the eye of photographer Mario Testino. After photographing her only twice in the Dolce & Gabbana’s pre-Fall and Hugo Boss’s Fall ad campaigns, Mario was so taken with Catherine that he signed the then 17-year-old to a six-month exclusive editorial contract. “I was sent some Polaroids of Catherine by her agency,” Mario remembers, “and I just thought, ‘Wow! This girl is amazing!’ … It’s one thing to spot someone early in their career – I’m never afraid to take risks on a new girl – but it’s a great luxury to be able to develop what starts as an instinct and turns into a rich working relationship. It means we’ll have time to make some fantastic photographs together.” Catherine was, and still is, equally full of praise for her time with Mario: “I love working with him. He’s a good teacher and he’s got February 2012

me some great jobs.” Since then she has appeared on three Vogue Australia covers, the cover of Vogue Paris, in editorials for US Vogue and was named one of British Vogue’s “Head Girls” and a model to watch for in the upcoming season. She also secured a place in the controversial Pirelli calendar, to be shot by Terry Richardson, on top of becoming the face of Jean Paul Gaultier and renewing her contract with Hugo Boss. Despite the glamour and excitement of her new life, and being dubbed “fashion’s latest crush” by the New York Times, Catherine’s refreshingly down-to-earth and declares she’s still a Loganer at heart. “It’s pretty hard to find Versace in Logan,” Catherine quips. “I didn’t even know how to say it properly. I shopped at Supre and City Beach.” Now, Catherine is one of fashion’s most indemand models with high-end names such as; Dolce & Gabbana, Hugo Boss, Versace, Donna Karan, Louis Vuitton, Dior Joaillerie and Narcisco Rodriguez Fragrance, under her belt. She readily admits she has been blessed with success. “I have been really lucky with my career being at ‘the right place at the right time,’ so I am definitely fulfilled on the professional front.” Between 2009 and 2011, Catherine took a hiatus from modelling, during which time she was famously engaged to (and subsequently broke up with) MTV presenter Ruby Rose. It’s understood it was Catherine who ended the relationship, with reports suggesting Ruby confirmed the split by posting an updated status on her Facebook page, although reps for both women refuse to discuss detail of the couple’s relationship. Distance is said to have contributed to the break up with Catherine, who was still based in New York, not home enough to keep the love alive. “They are and have long been tremendous friends,” says a friend of the couple. “It’s sad they’ve broken up and both women are determined to remain close but the relationship wasn’t working.” Catherine returned to the catwalk in September 2011, appearing at London Fashion Week for Matthew Williamson but confessed to missing her family and her home in Australia immensely. Catherine says she looks forward to times when she gets to visit Down Under and simply “hang out”. Speaking of her favourite things back home, Catherine says, “my family and the weather during Christmas time”, and in December, Catherine flew from New York to her home shores and to the place where we love to see her – in front of the camera. “My dream is to be able to do what I am doing, but have my family around me,” she says. “Like everyone else, I want to stay happy.” We’re sure she’ll make that dream come true.

Specialising in Enzyme Therapy, Amarante works very closely with Danne Montague-King – the pioneer in beauty restoration therapy. Amarante owner Justine O’Connor says they understand that poor skin function can contribute to wrinkles, fine lines, premature ageing, pigmentation and breakouts. “We also understand that skin that functions optimally is healthy and beautiful,” she adds. Suitable for those concerned with ageing skin, acne and uneven skin tone, DMK’s signature Enzyme Therapy uses transfer messenger enzymes, a living substance that

works with certain minerals in the body to form a natural system of antioxidants that fight corrosive free radicals. “With nature being the body’s best healer, DMK utilise a signature Enzyme Therapy that is designed to work with the skin’s natural processes in order to encourage the skin to function like it did when it was young,” Justine explains. “Since enzymes are nature’s biological catalysts, DMK utilise these to mimic the way the skin functions in order to help recreate the ideal environment for healthy skin to thrive.” When properly formulated, enzymes can help remove unwanted protein, toxins and other effluvia from the epidermis using a process called ‘reverse osmosis’. Where some cosmetic facial treatments may only act on the surface of the skin, DMK Enzyme Treatments aim to create a healthy environment for cells to live and thrive in. In addition to Enzyme Therapy and the array of luxury services available – from luscious facials, to deep tissue massage, designer

nails and glamorous eyelash extensions, Amarante stocks a variety of lavish body products, cosmetics and home prescriptive skin care. yal Harris is what you’d call a Jack-ofall-trades. He’s dabbled in everything from retail, to defensive driving school, to sign writing with the family business, but nothing has kept him more grounded than the roar of a V8 engine hot under his heels. With motorsports in his blood, the racing wunderkind clung to the track from the young age of 10. “Dad raced speedway and took me to the hire karts when I was younger. I was instantly hooked, and fast!” says Ryal. Nicknamed “The Kid”, he’s now a current world heavyweight in the fuel-guzzling, actionpacked world of V8 Utes and he’s only 26 years old! Recently scoring the top spot at the Armour All Gold Coast 600, emphatically winning all

three races, Ryal ranks the overall results as his sweetest success yet. Catching up with the racing wunderkind shortly after his victorious final round, Ryal tells us it was really great to have a win on his home turf, but it hadn’t really sunk in yet. “I was confident coming into the round and even more confident after qualifying fastest,” he explains. “No one has won three races in a weekend for years and do it at home feels better than winning at Bathurst.” With an astute mind, a fearless heart…and a lead foot, this born and bred Gold Coaster is now also the driving force behind Strife – the latest style hub to hit Surfers Paradise. Ryal is an anomaly in an industry where fashion collage is a must have criteria for rite

of passage but he’s breaking free from the mould, following his heart and making some serious coin along the way. Officially formed in 2007, Strife is Ryal’s latest style project. A culmination of freespirited confidence and contradiction to the norm that defines Ryal down to a tee! “Well, I’m always in strife,” he says with a cheeky smirk on his face. As for the brand, Ryal says, “I love the word, how it looks, and my designs are varied from political, to cartoon pictures, to lyrics and quotes.” A collage of quirky prints and cuts with contrast and pastel colours, coming together in a street, art-style collection of vintage wears. store opening right next to Black Coffee Lyrics, was publicly launched last month after almost five years in the making. As Ryal reminisces over the past few years, he explains the concept was always in the back of his mind. “I was born into design. Fashion was something I got into by shirt printing. Dad is a sign writer and printed shirts when I was younger, so all the equipment was lying around – paint was everywhere! So I started drawing, painting, printing shirts,” he says. “Crazy busy shirts were the cool thing back in 2003 and 2004, so it was fun for me to stencil and screen print a tee from scratch.” Running with the light bulb idea, he put pen to paper and scribbled down the basics: look, label and overall ambience of the brand, then

set about making it happen. “These days guys are putting a big circle on a scoop neck tee and calling themselves designers,” he says. But Ryal wanted to do something different, something original. “The store, the vintage, Strife itself will be a different label,” he says proudly. “Strife, as a store, is a melting pot for local talents to showcase their designs.” Strife lends its shelves to ultra-chic brands like American Apparel, VINCIJA, Who Killed Bambi and Mr Simple, to name but a few. “The Gold Coast needs come culture badly! So vintage should take off here,” Ryal says. “It’s a great feeling picking up a rad vintage item to add to your wardrobe!” So what’s next for this budding designer?

Strife is going global! My plans are to build Strife into a cool destination shop, stocking local designers, vintage and some cool labels from around Australia and the globe! And Strife online store is coming soon!

Once seen as a place for old desperates, online dating is now turning into the latest craze with the greatest outcome of all…love.

F

or the lovelorn, the new year can be an unhappy tim e, as they cast envious glances in the direction of lovey-dovey couples at Christmas work parties, or as they pair off at the strike of 12 for their midnight smooch under the fireworks. For online-dating agencies, it’s a golden opportunity, as people

who have spent the holidays ruminating over unsatisfactory or non-existent love lives log on in their thousands, hoping to find romance ideally before February 14. Once seen as the last resort for a bunch of lonely geeks, onlinedating services have gradually shed much of the stigma formerly associated with them and

have become so...well, 2012! We’ve profiled some beautiful couples who’ve met online. Follow along as they share their journeys of love and lust in a world not as passionless as we thought.

the track, Steve whisked her away for a romantic weekend in Montville. “We’d been living together for about two months,” says Stacey revealing how Steve got down on one knee and asked her to be his bride.

In the beginning…

When Stacey first signed up to RSVP she admits it was as a bit of a joke. “My friend was on and she convinced me to join as a bit of fun. I wasn’t looking for anyone but curiosity got the better of me so I thought what the hell?” Stacey was online for about three weeks before spotting Stephen amidst the swarm of male responses she received. “It was a little overwhelming,” she gushes. “It was the first time I went looking for what sort of guys were online.” Whether it was by luck or by fate, Stacey stumbled upon Stephen’s profile and made the initial contact and, let’s just say, it wasn’t long before Steve had her blushing and giggling like a school.

The first date…

After the couple’s initial plans fell through, they made an impromptu date “dinner then a few games of pool.” Stacey had butterflies in her tummy but says she was

more excited then nervous. “There was definitely a connection straight away.” Steve says he knew after the very first date that Stacey was “the one”. “To be honest, we don’t really remember what happened after that as everything happened so quickly,” Stacey laughs.

The proposal…

Steve told Stacey he loved her just a few short weeks after the pair started dating. “It was the first time he met my parents. It was pretty quick,” she says, “mind you, we were practically trying on engagement rings after about four weeks of dating! Steve says he ‘knew’ after the first date. I knew after the second … things just felt right. We were in sync and it was the first relationship where it just felt easy.” Steve wanted to propose just three months into the relationship but Stacey had mentioned she wanted them to live together first, “to feel more like a couple”. Another four months down

The wedding…

Steve and Stacey wed on January 12 this year, just two days before their second year anniversary. It was a gorgeous ceremony in front her their closest friends and family. “We just got back from our honeymoon,” Stacey says excitedly. “We went to Bali for 10 days to just relax and spend time together…just us. It was perfect!” The newly weds have already purchased a house and renovated it, and are sharing the space with their two beautiful pups. “Our future plans involve travelling to Steve’s hometown of England, buying a second house to renovate and (hopefully) in the next two years or so, have kids,” Stacey smiles. “I was a total sceptic when I first got online. I thought it was a joke and was just looking forward to dating a few guys without getting too serious, never thinking I would meet my soul mate. You have to go in with the right frame of mind otherwise online dating doesn’t work. Just have fun with it!”

Sophie & Quincy Sophie lived in Sydney, Australia and Quincy lived in Calgary, Canada, so it was a natural step for the couple. Although they were physically separated, they didn’t see it as a barrier.

The first date…

In the beginning…

Sophie and Quincy’s fairy tale all started with a cheeky smiley face she sent to him. As curiosity intensified, short emails gradually became longer and then came their first phone call. “It was a surreal experience” for both of them. They were finally able to put a voice (and accent!) to the person they already knew so well. It wasn’t long before the two took to Skype as a way of seeing one another.

Sophie had just finished a recent work trip in Germany she flew to Los Angeles where she met the dashing Quincy for the first time. They’d originally planned to meet in a country half way between them, but Quincy really wanted to introduce Sophie his sister. So as soon as Sophie landed they quickly shot off to the beautiful beach city of San Diego. Quincy had their whole week planned to the tee and their first date lasted over a week! The couple indulged in all the treats and sights the city had to offer – from helicopter rides over the San Diego vineyards, to long walks on the beach, to romantic dinners. They were having so much fun, Sophie extended her trip for three days.

The proposal…

In late June, Sophie and Quincy went to Canada for a holiday. They spent their time

Kristie & Jamie In the beginning…

Kristie and Jamie were both getting a bit fed up with the dating scene when they each decided to try online date. They had been in long-term relationships before, but they never seemed to work out. “We tried eHarmony because we wanted to find the one we wanted to be with for the rest of our lives,” Kristie explains.

The first date…

A month after they first made contact, Kristie and Jamie decided it was time to meet in person, and what better occasion than Valentine’s Day? It seems the fireworks were there from the very beginning and it wasn’t long before the couple spent a weekend together, just talking and getting to know one another. They discovered they shared the same desire - to find a soul mate – and couldn’t help but feel their wishes had come true.

The proposal…

One night when Kristie and Jamie sat side by side, soaking up the romantic atmosphere on a rooftop overlooking the city lights below, Jamie calmly turned to Kristie and asked if she would make him the happiest man in the world and be by his side forever (in true tradition, Jamie had already asked Kristie’s parents for their permission). She replied to this question with a whole hearted “Yes!”.

The wedding…

Just two short months later, the couple were exchanging vows. They then jumped on a plane to Thailand to celebrate their union. Kristie and Jamie’s relationship is blossoming into what they know will be a life happy together. They’re now expecting their first child and cannot wait to start their family and grow old together, knowing not only have they found a soul mate, but a best friend as well.

exploring its beautiful sites and basking in each other’s company. Quincy took Sophie on a surprise helicopter ride to the Hillebrand Winery in Nagara-On-The-Lake. Unbeknownst to her, Quincy had a crafty plan to propose there. When the helicopter landed, the happy couple walked up to the restaurant balcony overlooking the vineyard. While enjoying a glass of champagne, Quincy popped the question.

The wedding…

Last year, the couple married in the Italian Garden of Hatley Castle in the Royal Roads University, in British Columbia. They chose this location not only because of the beauty of the garden, but because it was also where Quincy attended University. Sophie’s family and closest friends flew in from Sydney and Quincy’s family came from all over Canada and the US to attend. The Reception was held at the Hotel Grant Pacific, and following the wedding, they remained in Victoria for their honeymoon. “Some people say long distance relationships don’t work, but our drive to be together despite the distance is a testament to the bond we share,” Sophie says.

his month, we caught up with dating guru Samantha Jayne to talk about love, life and relationships. “First dates are always a challenge,” Samantha begins to explain. “Whether you're a rookie dater or seasoned professional, we could all do with a little brush up from time to time.” A former fitness and lifestyle consultant, and the owner and operator of Blue Label Life matchmaking and introduction agency, it’s pretty safe to say Samantha knows a thing or two about first dates. So, as we selfishly pull her away from playing Cupid to thousands around Australia, Samantha gives us her top tips to impress on your first date…and secure a second one.

Actively listen

Planning is the key

Don’t over or underdress

Keep it simple, relaxed and find out your dates interests, hobbies and favourite foods up front (imagine going to a steakhouse only to find out your date is vegetarian!).

Dare to be different

Why not try the zoo, a picnic overlooking a beautiful sunset, a visit to the museum or an art gallery? Try a boat trip, a theme park or if your date enjoys sport, a game. Your first date is an opportunity to get to know your date so avoid noisy or overcrowded bars, restaurants and movies.

COMPETITION We’re giving one lucky reader the chance to bag themself a Date Do-Over! Valued at $1750, the total prize pack includes: Silver Membership at Blue Label Life; Private one-on-one consultation Matchmaking; Compatibility testing; and Date coaching. And the best part is, you get all this for 6 months!

Eyes up fellas. Girls love a receptive man. Remember, she’s already agreed to go out with you, meaning she likes you. She said yes when she could have said no. It’s your job to make the night about her and ask her stimulating questions.

Smell good, but don’t overpower!

Nothing is worse than going on a date with someone who smells like they fell into the perfume or cologne counter or with someone with body odour worse than wet dog! One or two sprays should do just the trick. It’s been said that it’s impossible to overdress, but you can. Renting a tux to see a movie probably isn’t recommended, although on comedic value alone I suppose it could work for some.

Be on time

The fastest way to make a poor impression on a first date is to be late. If something beyond your control causes you to be late (“I’m having a bad hair day” is not an excuse), let your date know before he/she arrives. With over 15 years in the luxury motoring industry, and a knack for staying one step ahead of her competitors, Susan Butler is the Dealer Principal and at the top of her game in the lavish world of Porsche. How do you define success? Defining success is working towards a goal, reaching it and feeling really good about how you got there. it doesn’t matter where you are or what you’ve achieved in life, as long as you’re happy about what you’ve done with your time – to me that is the definition of a successful person. Is this what you always wanted to do? No way! i studied at University and then embarked on the treacherous mission of seeking graduate positions, eventually landing a role with a leading european car manufacturer in my hometown, Melbourne. Graduates were required to spend 12 months in a dealership selling cars. i was less than thrilled with the idea but i later discovered dealerships are where all the fun happens! Very soon i decided the retail side of the business is where i belong. Your greatest career achievements? A good leader understands it’s not your personal talents and skills alone that create success in business, but rather your ability to get the best out of others. My greatest rewards have come about by developing others, watching people reach their goals, knowing i played a role in making that happen. February 2012

Any words of wisdom? When starting out in your career, try not to overlook industries that are perceived as “male” such as the car trade. There are some fantastic career opportunities for both men and women in any area and it’s a shame they tend to slip under our radar. Also, when looking to progress into a management role in any area, don’t feel the need to change who you are or become “tough and aggressive”. You’ll gain the most respect simply by having confidence in your ability, doing your job with proficiency and leading by example. How do you balance your personal and professional life? i’m very organised and make the most of my time both at work and at home. it isn’t hard to balance both – you just have to decide what, and who is important to you. Any secrets to unlocking your success? You can only feel passionate when you truly love to do something. it’s a product of this and it only comes after you’ve found that one thing you want to do more than anything else in your career – the discovery of that one thing, i believe, is actually the essential element for success. Aristotle says “man is a goal-seeking animal. His life only has meaning

35

if he is reaching out and striving for his goals”. i’m at my happiest when i’m working towards something i really want to achieve. Why is Porsche so special to you? Having worked for 12 years with another German brand with a rich motor sport heritage, porsche seemed like the natural progression. obviously it’s hard not to appreciate the product, but i also love the company’s branding, the way it communicates its brand to the market place, the core values of the business and the systematic, professional approach to the retail environment. If you could go back in time, would you have done anything differently? if i could do it over, i may not have been in such a rush for that first promotion. i wish i’d enjoyed the freedom and fun of selling for a bit longer before taking the quantum leap to being New Car Manager! i look back on those early days and have some wonderful memories of my customers and the friendships i built. But i have no regrets! Porsche centre Gold coast 1 Harvest court Southport, Ph: (07) 55 557 911 www.porschegoldcoast.com.au

Coochie Hydrogreen Lawn Services

Summer brings both rewards and challenges for lawn owners so make sure you’re caring for your turf with these top tips! Whether you want a lush, green lawn to show off at your backyard barbeque or simply to walk around on barefoot when it's just you, a great summer lawn is part of a great summer in general. Let Coochie's summer lawn care dos and don'ts be your guide to keeping your garden sanctuary in tip-top shape over the coming months. Tip #1 - Do water your lawn The situation of heat stress may lead many people to try and rectify the problem by watering every day. You may be watering your lawn as usual, but the evaporation that results from the heat means less water is getting to your lawn's roots. Trying watering your lawn until the moisture gets about six inches into the soil (approx 20-30 min), and consider increasing (or limiting) the number of times you turn on

the sprinklers to two or three times per week. Tip #2 – Combat Lawn Armyworm One of the most devastating insect pests in managed turf, outbreaks can happen quickly and be difficult to predict. Consult a professional like Coochie Hydrogreen to provide a complete lawn care program to provide protection for your lawn so it doesn’t resemble a battlefield. Tip #3 - Do Eliminate bare patches To regenerate bare patches, a light cultivation to reduce compaction and eliminate weeds before you start is recommended. If your lawn type can be established from seed then you may be able to reseed the bare patches. If you have Couch, Kikuyu or Buffalo lawn you may take runners from the healthy lawn areas and plant them in the bare patches.

Tip #4 - Do mow your lawn Mowing frequency varies and is determined by the growth rate of the lawn. Ideally during warm months, mowing should be done weekly. If you allow the grass to become long it may become thatchy. Also, try to alternate the direction of mowing to encourage the grass to grow upright and distribute wear and soil compaction. Offering a wide range of services with friendly and experienced staff, Coochie offer a free quote, personalised lawn assessment and advice on what steps to take to ensure you have a 'Hydrogreen lawn'. Be the envy of your neighbours this summer and give Coochie Hydrogreen a call today. Ph: 1800 245 955 or visit www.coochie.com.au

SOCIETY

Just off for a Tweet break... Sarah Blinco asks, ‘are we too obsessed with updating our status’?

I

was in Vancouver last year and I walked straight by Robert Pattinson (apparently he was there with his girlfriend Kristen Stewart filming some small-budget movie about Vampires). I didn’t ignore him, in fact I simply didn’t see him because I was too busy navigating Twitter to upload a photo of some fabulous shoes I’d found. It seemed critical at the time to share these with the world, but as we turned a corner my fiancé interrupted me and pointed to the cordoned off street I’d obliviously meandered down. My heart stopped – there was Robert walking back onto the Twilight set, now surrounded by the busy film crew and unlike just a few minutes before, totally inaccessible for a photo (or impromptu marriage proposal). My obsession with constantly updating my status and profile had finally caused me to miss a real life opportunity. I wanted to hit my fiancé with my BlackBerry – I blamed them both for this! On reflection, it occurred to me that I am now that statistic. I’m the one holding everyone up as we walk through a busy Pacific Fair crowd because I’m concentrating Febraury 2012

on what’s happening in the world of my phone rather than on the chaos around me; and I’m the one who sneaks out with the smokers and the coffee drinkers during the day to comment on what my friends have been up to online, instead of enjoying a social laugh in the courtyard with co-workers. A new survey from Google conducted by Ipsos OTX has found that we are using our smartphones more, in every context. Many (39% of 5000 surveyed) are indeed guilty of taking phones to the bathroom during the day in order to (obsessively) update a social status; and did you know that nearly one in three people use smartphone APPs before they even get out of bed in the morning? Are we too obsessed with our phones, or is this just the way of the ‘now’? To be fair, I know I’m not alone, and I also maintain that without my BlackBerry (no, I didn’t break it when I whacked my other half with it in Vancouver) I would have missed many important business leads, deadlines, birthdays and events. In all honesty, I love being able to Facebook and Tweet on the go – to be able to comment on the world around me,

38

make new friends and contacts. International Social Media consultant, Clayton Mitchell says, “smartphones are simply replacing other media vehicles we used in the past. For instance, instead of reading hardcopy versions of magazines and newspapers in the bathroom, now we turn to our smartphones. Same process, just a different tool. That’s true with a lot of what we call ‘social media trends’. User-generated content is becoming popular, but it already was popular before the Internet – look at America’s (or Australia’s, for that matter) Funniest Home Videos. Just don’t be surprised if you soon begin hearing stories about people dropping their iPhones in the bath.” Smartphones now supplement, and in many ways surpass computer use, so on second thoughts I think I’ll keep mine close at hand. I probably would have had a tough time snagging Robert from Kristin anyway, and it’s better to have upheld my civic duty by sharing the location of ‘must-have shoes’.

Tacky Double Chocolate Fondue

made of dark chocolate with a touch of red chili obsession and white chocolate perfumed with soft cherry liqueur Once upon a time I loved you white, the purest and most innocent there is. Later I loved you black: moody and obsessive. But after so many years I love you gray. People say that’s the saddest, most boring color of them all, but now I know that I love you mixed black and white, in fact I love you like I’ve never loved you before. Ingredients: 2 cups heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon chlli powder 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 9 ounces dark chocolate, chopped 9 ounces white chocolate, chopped 1 tablespoon cherry liqueur Method: Bring 1 cup cream to a boil with the chili powder cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour over the dark chocolate in a heat proof bowl and stir until smooth. Bring the remaining 1 cup cream to a boil. Pour over the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Add the cherry liquor. Stir until smooth and set aside. Serve the chocolate sauces in separate bowls placed inside other bowls filled with boiling water, or in bowls over votive candles. This will keep the chocolate hot and melted for about 1 hour. (Recommended for dunking: marshmallows, nuts, soft dry cake, fresh fruits, candied and dried fruits). Serves 2-4.

“I observe, without moving a muscle, the focused sensuality in front of me until the point of bursting. The more I want to eat, the less I want to eat . . . I want to revel in the lust, I want to make love to it and never ever fail to taste the passion, the infinite essence of life...” Max Brenner. Ingredients: 1 pound (450g) store-bought pizza dough 2 teaspoons unsalted butter, melted 1/4 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (recommended: Nutella) 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips 2 tablespoons white chocolate chips 1 cup chopped large marshmallows or mini marshmallows Method: Position the oven rack on the bottom of the oven and preheat to 450°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into a 9-inch round. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Using your fingers, make indentations all over the dough. Brush with the melted butter. Bake until the crust is crisp and pale golden brown, about 20 minutes. Immediately spread the chocolate-hazelnut spread over the pizza then sprinkle with the chocolate chips and marshmallows. Bake until the chocolate just begins to melt, about 2 minutes. Cut into wedges and serve. Serves 8-10.

Hi fellow travellers, I have but one word for you: Dubai. It’s like going to another planet; an age-old city that has recently become the shopping and entertainment mecca of the Middle East. Slowly running out of oil, Dubai’s powers that be have realised they need something to maintain the life style to which they have become accustomed! So, for the past 20 years or so, the corporate world has been sinking money into beyond belief seven star hotels, bigger than Ben Hur shopping centres, and all manner of entertainment options. Money is no object in this town. Who could have imagined an indoor ski field? Hotels backed by world-class designers such as Versace and Armani? A suburb known as The World, where you can literally buy the island known as Australia! There are also plans for a new archipeligo to be called The Universe.

Then there’s the hotel known as the Venice of Dubai, one of the most fascinating resorts in the world. Two stunning five star hotels make up the Madinat Jumeirah, along with courtyard summer villas, known as Abra’s, 44 world class restaurants, a traditional souk (market place), over two kilometres of pristine, private beach and free access to the neighbouring Wild Wadi Waterpark. The Al Qasr and the Mina A’Salam hotels, built to resemble a traditional Arabian village, exude a welcoming opulence that has to be experienced to be believed. Getting from one part of the resort to the other is easy via the hotels own motorised gondolas. Drift past the large pool where they keep the rescued sea turtles, pop over to the ever popular Talise Spa, or sit in one of the many cocktail lounges, watching the nearby Burj Al Arab illuminated in changing colours as the burning sun goes down over the Arabian Gulf. So many truly magical experiences to be had. For a limited time, I have a great offer at one of these beautiful hotels, the Mina A’Salam. If you book and pay by March 31, 2012, we have an amazing offer including breakfast and dinner for the whole family! For a hotel that commands nearly $2000 a night in peak times, this is a deal you can’t miss out on. Until next time, Cathy.

Itherefore think... I am. Is this You?

Our newest columnist, Lyn shares her most inner thoughts on how the mind-body-action process impacts our everyday lives.

A

fter many years as a personal trainer, performance coach, and speaker on health, healing, communication, relationships and life, I’ve come to the clearcut decision that we all become what we think about every second of every day. Alright, I can tell you’re all thinking: ‘oh no! not another tree hugging, new age, hippie smoking a joint and trying to tell me how to live my life.’ You can ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you, that ain’t the case. I’ve just spent the past 25 years of my life talking to thousands of people about their life, health, body, relationships and view of the world. It’s your birthright to be healthy strong and vital, not to mention loved, joyful, and at peace. Have you ever wondered why there can be two people, who have the same disease, and one will make a miraculous recovery and the other person will die exactly when the doctors said he/she would? We call it a miracle when this happens; doctors call it remission. I have another word for it: intention. one person intended to make the doctors right and the other intended to make them wrong. I believe when you get down to it that’s the main difference. now for the rest of this article it’s my intention to show you how to do it in all areas of your life – the good bit that is, not the dying part. make the nay-sayers incorrect and yourself correct on all you want to have in your life health, love, great relationships, and a job you enjoy. Anger, fear and sadness aren’t normal. to understand this concept you have to first take a quantum leap into a world that’s so different to anything we can hope to imagine. this world is all around us and we don’t even know it’s there. It permeates every cell of your body, and we’re all involved with it weather we like it, believe in it or not. this world is the infinite world of thought. none of this information is new! It’s been around since the beginning of thinking with us writing those thoughts down.

I’ve been researching this for some time, and I’ve implemented it in my own life in many ways – with fantastic results, might I add. William James (January 11, 1842 – August 26, 1910) once said: “the greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind”. Did you know, we’ve discovered neurotransmitters within the human body that actually explain how the mind-body connection works? neurotransmitters are released from different glands; one is the hypothalamus (a small but powerful gland in your brain) in response to thoughts, beliefs and feelings and directly impact and controls the functions of all your organs, cells, molecules and atoms. I know this all sounds a bit crazy and I could be easily passed off as just another out-there weirdo who believes she can heal the world. Well actually, I am. maybe not so weird though. to prove my point, I’m going to use the easiest example of this mind-body connection: How does a man get an erection just by thinking about sex? Yes, you see now don’t you? this is now scientifically proven with a large number of medical studies demonstrate that negative emotions play a significant role in the development of heart diseases, chronic pain, autoimmune diseases and cancer. Fear is the biggie, followed by sadness, anger, anxiety and shame, which are all related to fear anyway. they drain our energy and suppress our immune system. We sabotage ourselves, and our addictive behaviours keep us stuck in old, destructive patterns. It’s all the nonsupportive self-talk such as; “it’s their fault”, “I can’t do this” or “I don’t deserve this”, which prevent us from accessing our full potential and achieving a life deserving of our self. correct thinking and right action create a self-empowered attitude and optimistic beliefs

stimulate and enhance the healing process – as well as every other part of our lives. the integration and alignment of mind-body through thought provides us with the most powerful resource for healing every part of our lives. negative emotions, inner conflicts and limiting beliefs are the most common factors that prevent us from changing, healing and succeeding. But there are some very simple methods of overcoming anything you are trying to heal in your life. the real problem lies with the fact that the easy things are also easy not to do. It all depends on how badly you want to change your life. It has been said that we resist change. I believe we don’t resist

Negative emotions, inner conflicts and limiting beliefs are the most common factors that prevent us from changing, healing and succeeding

change when it’s our choice. So choose change over fear, change over anger, change over stress, and believe you can rise higher in life. Do a course, read some inspiring books (one of my personal favourites is a very simple read called the Power of the Subconscious mind by Joseph murphy). We have all, at some stage in our lives, used this ever present power of thought to get some thing we want. our problem lies in the fact that we didn’t pay attention to the thought process that took place to achieve it, and didn’t give it the credit it deserved. So now we just keep plodding along wondering why nothing is working out, and we can’t seem to get a break. Pay very close attention to what you habitually think about every day, see where you may be sabotaging yourself and change your mind.

Picture: Mamma Mia!

Meryl Streep 2012 Best Actress Golden Globe winner - will she win the Oscar this month too?

S

he’s considered by many critics (and fans) to be the greatest living actress of our time. Meryl Streep has already this year made a mark on the entertainment industry with her recent Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (The Iron Lady), and looks set to win the Oscar in the same category this February 26. In The Iron Lady Meryl Streep plays Margaret Thatcher, the controversial, conservative Prime Minister who – for better or worse - changed the face of Britain during her 11 years in office. She told The Huffington Post that the film gave her insight into one of the strongest female figures we’ve seen in modern times: “Making the movie made me understand her [Margaret Thatcher] more, 360 – the whole thing. I think we tend to look at Political leaders in an extremely reductive, often contemptuous way; by doing that we are reducing what we know about them to a

label, and we limit our understanding of the mistakes they made, and also what they’ve done right. There’s always things to be learned.” Margaret Thatcher was indeed the first female Prime Minister in British history, and although her politics were questioned at times, her election to such a demanding and ‘male dominated’ role was an exciting step forward for women’s movements the world over. Commenting on this element, Meryl is quoted in England’s Guardian newspaper as saying, “When I was in college the professions open to women were so few – there were very few women that went to law school, no one dreamed of being a corporate head, it was out of the question. You could, perhaps, become leader of a company, maybe if they made make-up. You could be editor of a magazine but only if it was a woman’s magazine ... that’s the world that Margaret Thatcher entered

Glow Tanning Studio For A Radiant Summer Glow All Year Long!

and then rose right to the very top and it’s extraordinary.” In the same vein however, Meryl Streep herself has conquered Hollywood… and beyond. The star of stage and screen has been nominated for an Academy Award an amazing 17 times, and won it twice (for Sophie’s Choice (1983), Kramer vs. Kramer (1980) and potentially for a third time if she wins this year as predicted. It’s of course difficult to say for which films Meryl is best known. Everyone has a favourite, whether it’s Out of Africa (1985), A Cry in the Dark (famously telling the Lindy Chamberlain story in 1988), Postcards from the Edge (1990), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), The Hours (2002), or two that I personally love - The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Mamma Mia! (2008, pictured).
