EDITOR

In a word W

hat does mentoring mean to you? I asked myself this question after I interviewed author, columnist and confessed blog-oholic Mia Freedman. With a career in the media now spanning over two decades, Mia was just 24 when she was catapulted to the dizzy heights of magazine-world stardom as the youngest Cosmo editor in Australia EVER! Since then, she’s become my role model…my mentor. One piece of advice she gave me that I’ll never forget is what she called her “sure fire way to get through any day” and it came in the form of a life mantra: “When you drop those juggling balls, just remember they’re not made of glass. They bounce. So just pick them up, poor yourself a glass of wine and keep juggling.” How true is that?! Unfortunately, we’re not profiling Mia this month but we do have some really great and motivating reads for you to sink your teeth into. I catch up with Jersey Shore star Mike ‘The Situation’ (no, not to check out his abs) to find out just how much of this party-boy’s life, candidly exposed on the hit reality TV show, is real and how much is, well...sensationalised. You’ll never guess what he says! Okay, I’ll admit I’m a bit of a skeptic when it comes to spirituality and self-healing. And until this issue I was (ironically) blind-sighted by all that I couldn’t (or refused to) see for myself. If you’re anything like me, I recommend you flick to page 14 and read the excerpt from Lyn Collett’s latest e-book, Get Your Attitude Working. Lyn discusses how changing you attitude can lift you to greater heights than you’d ever image (hmm, maybe that was Mia’s secret). Over on page 32 we discuss the startling risks facing our kids with a new and disturbing phenomenon sweeping schools and homes all over the nation - cyber bullying. And with the lead up to Mother’s Day next month, we’ve profile five local (and seemingly normal) Wonder Women in Mum’s who mean Business. With more fashion, entertainment and goss than you can poke a stick at, it’s time to pour yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy Get it’s Mentor issue. Until next time,

I have good news and bad news Directioners! The good news: One Direction are coming to Australia! The bad? Tickets are practically impossible to get your hands on. Tickets to the UK band’s nation-wide tour through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne sold out in just three minutes last month. THREE MINUTES! In Sydney, groups of teenage girls camped out overnight for tickets, old-school style. (You’ll be so embarrassed about this one day ladies, let me tell you...) The worst thing about this is that scalpers started selling tickets to the concert online only minutes after it had sold out for prices up to $5000! But never fear: word on the street is that One Direction will be coming Down Under once again for a more extensive tour later in the year. So watch this space! April 2012

SHORTY’s ! t u o sh social | COMMENT

Living by the Bart Simpson code of ethics: “It wasn't me, I didn't do it!” Shorty sets our pages alight with brutal honesty and quick wit on topics that really get him going.

W

ell, what an interesting month! After my article on Internet dating things really livened up. I received a call from a friend in Canberra asking a simple question:”Shorty, why is your picture on an internet dating site?” WTF?! You got it, someone hacked a picture off my Facebook profile and signed me up with Match.com as Geoff613. Seriously, do I look like a Geoff? Sad thing is, I got no hits. Quite funny when you think about it. I hope whoever did it gets their email box choked with contacts. Next thing that happened was a very nasty and vitriolic private message in my FB inbox. I won’t repeat what was said but needless to say it was very disturbing. After contacting FB it turns out the culprit lives in the States and has since had his account terminated. At one stage I contemplated closing my Facebook account down but my long time mentor advised me that if I did that then the crazies win! Haha...mentor, I haven’t used that word in years! What is a mentor? Ask a kid nowadays and the answers would probably range from: “One of those mints you put in Coke to make a fountain” or “Yeah, like, isn’t that one of the Transformers?” Whether you know it or not we all have a mentor in our lives. It could be your best buddy, your partner, a teacher or even your parent. These are the

April 2012

people that talk sense to us when we think there just isn’t a solution to our problems. My mentor is Matt, my personal trainer. Remember him? He’s the one who told me to use the ATM to impress a girl. (Maybe I should get a new one!) My Grandmother used to be my mentor but at the age of 60 she started walking five kilometres a day. She is now 90 but we don’t know where she is! (Boom, boom). I have just done something I should have done years ago! I’ve signed up to sponsor a six-year-old child in Haiti. Maybe I can be a mentor to someone else. It took all the publicity and short documentary on Joseph Koni to make me realise we can all help in our own way. On another subject, seems I’m still having trouble keeping up with modern music/musicians. After the embarassment during the Armor All Gold Coast 600 of thinking Bliss & Eso was a new cocktail, I was visiting a friend the other day only to find her swearing and cursing at her computer. I timidly ask what was wrong? She replied: “I’m trying to find one direction!” Stupidly I suggested she use the UBD. Wow...if looks could kill! It seems One Direction is a new boy band from the UK that has all our former Beiber fans jumping ship! She was trying to get tickets for her

12

12-year-old daughter but they sold out in just three minutes! Needless to say there’s one totally disillusioned 12-yearold in need of some mentoring (I didn’t volunteer). I guess I need to try to keep up with the younger generation. Well, by the time you’re reading this we will have had our state election. The campaign was just as nasty and boring as they always are but I hope you all voted with your brains. It seems like it’s a case of the lesser of two evils but until a political giant comes along then we have to bite the bullet. Time for me to get back on the merrygo-round and ride my trusty steed off into the sunset. Take care and be safe. Shortster

Attitude always determines Altitude

Lyn Collett shares an extract from her motivational e-book, Get Your Attitude Working.

J

ust like great buildings stand on strong foundations, so it is with success. And the foundation of success is attitude. 85 per cent of success is attitude and a mere 15 per cent is knowledge. As stated by Williams James of Harvard University: “the greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude.” Yes, altering your attitude will significantly enhance your life. Attitudes are the programmed established ways of responding to people and situations that we’ve learned over many years. Your attitude is based on beliefs, values and assumptions you hold as true. Your attitudes become manifest through your behaviours - in fact, your attitude drives your behaviour! Your body language is the result of your mental attitude to whatever situation you are in. By choosing your attitude you get in that mood and send out a message that everyone understands, consciously or unconsciously. We have the most sophisticated chemical manufacturing plant in our brain, it’s called the hypothalamus. every time you think a thought or have an emotional response to anything the hypothalamus will pump out the correct hormone or neurotransmitter for that thought; and you feel, act, do, accordingly. Almost always, you have a choice as to what attitude to adopt in any situation. there is nothing in any normal situation, social or work-related, that dictates you must act or, as most people do, react one way or another. For April 2012

instance, if you feel angry about something don’t really want to stay in, or keep working that happens, that’s how you choose to feel. in dead-end jobs that don’t really inspire us nothing in the event itself makes it absolutely thinking this is just how it is and we have no necessary for you to feel that way, it’s your control over it at all. If you want to stay believing that then choice. And since you do have a choice, most of the time you’ll be better off if you choose to there’s no real point in reading on because the whole idea behind it is: we do have total react positively rather than negatively. “People spend a lifetime searching for control over our attitude. In fact, this is the happiness; looking for peace. They chase one thing in our lives - the only thing - that we idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other do have unwavering control over. If you can people, hoping to fill the emptiness that get your head around this fact, that’s the first plagues them. He’s officially the world’s Toughest Firefighter Alive and ‘hot stuff’ in the sporting arena with a superbly chiselled physique, but Germany’s Joachim Posanz kept his cool on a week-long Australian tour to check out his competition for the upcoming 12th World Firefighters Games.

J

oachim flew into Sydney late February to help launch the official countdown to the 2012 Games, which will run October 19 to 28, where he’ll compete in the showcase event – The World’s Toughest Firefighter challenge. But last month, his travels lead him to the sunny Gold Coast – his “favourite” place in Australia so far. While on holiday, he managed to tackle the highest stair climb in the Southern hemisphere at Q1, undertook training at the Gold Coast airport with the aviation teams, and even fulfilled one of his life-long dreams of cuddling up to a Koala at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, all before heading over the boarder to Byron Bay to compete against Northern New South Wales Games competitors. It seems this little vacation has made Joachim need another! But, as the old adage goes, there’s no rest for the wicked…or the World’s Toughest Firefighter who is now back at home in Germany getting stuck into his gruelling training regime and pumped up, ready to battle it out at the October Games.

The

formula for success

Why being mentored, and mentoring in return is so good for the soul, and how you can find a program to inspire your life.

L

et me tell you about my first key mentor. In fact, she’s still my mentor. She is an insightful media all-rounder... so is probably reading this now (better watch my spelling and grammar)! My mentor, Jeni, was my first editor here on the Gold Coast. Well travelled, intelligent, bilingual and widely published in international magazines – she could very well have behaved like Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, but she didn’t. Regardless of being busy, she kindly passed on constructive feedback, industry insights and inspired me on everything from how to throw a fab party, source prizes, deal with office politics and write for lifestyle magazines. I’ll never forget all the things she taught me, and I still build on those lessons every day. I’ve always been grateful to have had a mentor, and in the tradition of paying it forward, I’ve since tried to help those working under me and like my mentor, I enjoy seeing people succeed and flourish. I believe a key element within this mentoring process is ‘inspiration’. If you are inspired by someone, you aspire to be like them, and this usually provides aims, goals and direction. In Australia today there are quality mentoring programs designed to inspire youth, students and within the workforce. Critically, youth need to be mentored and encouraged - arguably more than ever before. The Australian Youth Mentoring Network (AYMN), Australia’s peak mentoring body, is April 2012

a national hub for youth mentoring research, tools and resources. Kathleen Vella, Executive Officer from AYMN explains, “The Australian Youth Mentoring Network started six years ago as part of a community and government response to provide better support for quality youth mentoring across Australia. Since then the AYMN has supported over 400 mentoring programs, 1,800 volunteer mentors and 30,000 young people! Our organisation works with youth mentoring programs right across the country to ensure that every mentor and

doing great work, putting mentors together with young people who make huge differences in their lives. Our website has lots of these stories. Traditionally, mentoring relationships form naturally: for example, when a student goes to a teacher for advice or a senior manager takes a trainee under her wing. But with people working longer hours and having less free time and with changes to family structures, many of us – and particularly young people – are unable to find naturallyoccurring mentors. Instead, the lucky ones are being helped by structured mentoring programs that utilise adult volunteers or older peers to assist them to realise their full potential. Whether you are looking for a ‘youth mentoring program’ to volunteer for, or you are a young person looking for a mentor, the Australian Mentoring Program Database on the AYMN website is a great place to start.” Griffith University’s South-East Queensland campuses have been providing tertiary students with the opportunity to be mentored by industry professionals since 1994. Mary-Ellen Hempel of the Griffith Industry Mentoring Program (more online: http:// tinyurl.com/7ozaa8l) says it started out

We see a lot of programs doing great work, putting mentors together with young people who make huge differences in their lives. young person has access to a high quality youth mentoring program which helps each young person to realise their potential. Mentoring staff and volunteer mentors can access hundreds of free resources on our website - youthmentoring.org.au. The AYMN also holds training workshops, free public forums and mentor summits across the country. In November, we will host our Biennial Australian Youth Mentoring Conference on the Gold Coast from the 14 -15th.” Kathleen adds, “We see a lot of programs

18

small, but has grown in significance over the years. “Currently we have approximately 220 mentors involved across our Gold Coast and Brisbane programs. The primary function of the Industry Mentoring Program is to assist students in clarifying their career objectives and to facilitate the transition from study to the workplace. Mentors share their knowledge and experience and provide support and guidance to students who are embarking upon their careers.” Students consistently report that they find the program invaluable in terms of assisting them to build confidence and networks in their chosen field. Mentors in turn find it rewarding to be able to ‘give back’ to the community and a privilege to contribute to the development of talented future professionals. Obviously it’s beneficial to have mentors throughout life – while we grow as people and as business people. Rob Thompson is the Director of In-A-Day Hands On Training which is the umbrella organisation of Mentoring and coaching Gold coast (mentoringandcoaching.com.au). He is

an advocate for how critically important it is to have mentors in our lives, but also for how rewarding being a mentor can be. “I was a professional musician who fell into drug and alcohol addiction in the early ‘90s until one day I read a great book by Napoleon Hill that changed my life in such a profound way. Since then I learnt to transmute my addictive tendencies towards positive ends such as building businesses, property investment, teaching and creating websites, public speaking and inspiring and mentoring others. I enjoy reading about, discovering, implementing and teaching the success secrets of high achievers and self made people... A guy that I had met at a few seminars and events approached me when he learnt what I was doing in property and business and asked me one day if I would mentor him, I agreed. Since then have learnt so much more and found that mentoring was a calling. I really enjoyed teaching him the success secrets that I had learnt and watching him build confidence, grow and set and achieve his goals.”

19

Rob adds it is especially important to be mentored as we grow professionally. “Most business owners are stuck working inside their businesses; they are too close to what they do and require a trusted advisor to show them where they can improve. Mentors can help provide focus, and clarity where there once was confusion.” It takes a special kind of person to be a mentor – someone who actually likes to share, impart wisdom and help others. On the flipside, to be effectively mentored you need to want to be mentored – keen to learn and accept there are people surrounding you who have varied (or more) experience. If you’re a sponge and accept you can actually learn some pretty amazing things from others, then your world will open up and the learning will continue long after you’ve walked away from school.

with Adele Rowlands-Dealey

He’s bronzed, he’s buff and he’s got all the brains to boot! But sorry ladies, this one’s taken. We catch up with The Renovators runner up to see what life is like for him, his business and his family after the show. Where’d you grow up? I’m one of the lucky few born and bred on the Gold Coast. I had a pretty active childhood racing dirt bikes with my two younger sisters. How did you get into renos? I started my carpentry apprenticeship at 15 years old. I guess it was in my blood as Dad was a carpenter and I’d lived through many of our own renovations from a young age. What’s your favourite part of the job? It’s an active job so it keeps me fit and on my toes. The most rewarding feeling is starting with nothing and building something amazing to look back and say, ‘I did that’. How’d you get the gig on The Renovators? My wife Robbie actually saw the casting call advertised on Channel 10 and she roped me into it. We thought it would be a good opportunity to show Australia my passion so I applied. I actually thought I didn’t get on because it took months to hear from them but then I was called to an audition up in Brisbane and went through several stages of practical and theory tests. A few months after that, I moved to Sydney and survived the competition and filmed for six months. Any significant changes in your life since the show? Since winning ‘Best Renovator’ on the show for the reno I did on the Inner City Terrace, being recognised walking down the April 2012

street and being asked for photos was the weirdest;. It was really overwhelming at first but now I’ve gotten used to it. Life is busy now with juggling family life, our business, GC Exteriors & Construction, and the other media appearances I do. Do you have a catchphrase? I pulled a few out of the bag on the show, but the one I mainly said was, ‘It is tooooo’. It’s just a joke with a few work mates. Also, another one is, ‘I pull it out if I have to’. How’s it feel to be nominated as one of The Gold Coast Bulletin’s Sexiest Men? [Laughs] It was a bit of a joke and a bit of fun I guess. I was nominated by The Gold Coast Bulletin and was flattered. Robbie and my mates definitely had a great time giving me some stick about it! What do you consider your best trait? Good morals, a good upbringing, honesty and being a genuine person. How do you achieve a work/life balance? Sometimes work can be overloading and make you lose sight of what’s important so we always make time for our family, no matter what. Living close to the broadwater, we’re always having lunch and swimming with the kids down there. It’s a really great place to live. What’s your biggest personal achievement? As mushy as it sounds, it would definitely be

20

meeting and marrying my wife Robbie and having our two beautiful girls, Cruze and Indie. Every day there is something new and I enjoy being dad. Also getting on The Renovators was a personal highlight for me as thousands applied for the show and I was one of the lucky few who was able to get on prime time television doing what I love. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? ‘If in doubt…flat out’! What does a relaxing weekend involve for you? Not working, of course! A late sleep in with the family, going out for lunch and movies at home. Tell us something interesting we don’t know about you... Not many people know but I actually had really bad eye sight my whole life and I had to wear contact lenses and glasses every day. A few years ago I had laser eye surgery and it was the best money I’ve ever spent. No more contacts or glasses ever again! What’s on your bucket list? I always said I’d be a millionaire by the time I was 30 so I’ll keep buying my lotto tickets! One thing I’d love to do is travel around the world with Moto GP and race the different tracks around the world.

R

eal clients from all around the Gold Coast stand testament to the genuine results that this toning, firming, weight loss and cellulite reducing program achieves. ElectroSlim offers specific body sculpting through the use of skin contact electrodes which deliver waves of pulses that reshape the body. This process is called 'Electrotherapy', and ElectroSlim is pleased to be able to offer clients ground-breaking technology like this, that makes use of the latest medical equipment and targets those problem areas that we all could use a little help with. Coupled with a personalised nutritional plan, ElectroSlim breaks down adipose tissue and simultaneously increases blood circulation which improves health and longevity. The program is perfect for people who don’t have time for the gym, or for those who don’t like to exercise, and is ideal for those with injuries or illness who simply can’t exercise. Treatments take place in a private room while you lie down, relax and enjoy soft music. One happy local client, Alex Walton says,

"This program is very easy to follow with instant results. When you see the scales falling lower than you have seen in years it gives you the motivation you need to keep going. I lost 10kg in four weeks on the ElectroSlim program." ElectroSlim was established in 1983 and now maintains a top ranking among the world's largest and most successful international health, weight loss and computerised slimming franchises. I love the results for both of us. I must say it feels great to be thin and still have all my confidence. My pictures show my 23kg weight loss. Some friends actually asked me whether I’ve had a facelift. That is what I call value for money.

Glow & Tell The gorgeous Toni Pearen shares her top beauty secrets.

A

ussie starlet Toni Pearen is one of our nation’s most celebrated personalities. Best known as the host of Australia’s Funniest Home Videos and her early days on the popular soap E Street, the 39-year-old’s talents have been spread across presenting gigs, acting for the small and big screen, and, of course, singing ’90s hits like ‘I Want You’ and ‘In Your room’. Now she’s taking on a new role and the face and ambassador of beauty product range, U Little Beauty. Soon to be expecting her second child, there’s no wonder Toni’s skin radiates her natural beauty, but she admits she has a few tricks up her sleeve too. Toni gladly shares her ‘glow and tell’ beauty secrets.

Best beauty advice?

Best time-saving beauty tip?

Look after your skin. You don’t need the most expensive product on the market, you need rich but gentle skin care that suits your budget. Always cleanse your face at night before bed. Limit caffeine and sugar as they’re dehydrating to the skin and replace it with lots of water, fruit and vegetables. Smile. It’s easier to be heavy than to be light.

Use bathtime with your baby as a pampering session for yourself (as I do). Bathtime is now fun for both of us. I cleanse, exfoliate and apply a mask for 10 minutes while I coerce my two-year-old to clean his teeth. Using U Little Beauty’s natural, organic and affordable products means if he decides to apply a bit too I’m happy to oblige!

Your ‘can’t live without’ beauty product?

Does diet and exercise play a big role in your life?

U Little Beauty’s Vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is vital in cell and collagen reproduction. Collagen plumps the skin and aids in antiaging. The Kakadu Plum, which is the main ingredient in all of their products, has 10 times the vitamin C of an orange.

Now I’m pregnant for a second time, I’m on a strict Low GI diet and exercise plan. I feel and look so different to the first time. Low GI means limiting sugar and carbohydrates and eating lots of nourishing whole foods. Exercise involves a 20-minute walk with the pram on busy days and whatever else I can manage in my free time, which is limited.

Describe yourself in three words? Optimistic, passionate and hungry!

Guilty pleasures? Magnum Ice Creams, Project Runway, my daily Internet fixes. BellaMumma, Garance Dore and The Happiness Project and, lately, afternoon naps.

Life mantra?

“Mum always told me to…”

It’s your life, put your soul in it. Feed your soul, live creatively and learn to love and trust yourself wholeheartedly.

Stop touching my face with my dirty hands. I guess it makes sense.

What do you hope to pass on to your littlies?

Family life…

I want to pass on the value of shopping locally. Of being aware of its origins and choosing to buy closer to our shores. Of living a life mindful and conscious of your choices. I also want them to know they are their own person unique, beautiful and important.

I remember when I first met my husband I said I wasn’t ready to get involved with him. I needed time. He said that wasn’t an option. He wanted to be with me. His directness made me fall for him! I loved that he knew what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to say it. We fell in love in 2004 and married in 2007 at his parents’ home in country NSW. Life with Will has never been dull. Meeting him changed

March 2012

me. I started thinking about babies. Our first son, Lucky, was born in December 2009. Our life is all about family now. Our decision to have a second child was really like, ‘honey, do you want chicken or beef?’ [Laughs]. We said, ‘why not?’ And bam! I was pregnant.

Mums who mean Business! Some of the Coast’s coolest, contemporary mums take five minutes out to share a few April insights with Get it.

Most important business lesson you’ve learned over the past few years? To

gain as much exposure/brand awareness as possible and seek all networking opportunities that come your way.

Why do you think it’s important to be mentored, and to mentor others in return? Mentoring is important because

Lallah also became the first woman appointed to the Australian Advertising Institute. I never knew any of this when I was younger and only found out much later when I saw a tribute to her in Myer one day - what an inspiration!

you can never know everything and should never stop learning from other people. It is very important when running a business by yourself to have someone to bounce ideas off and get useful feedback to make sure you are on the right path and heading in the right direction.

Tell us a little about what you do…

Tribunity’s purpose is ‘business and human empowerment’. We mentor and serve as business advisers to a cross-section of industry from Real Estate, Investment, Transport, Shipping, Retail, Mining as well as other small to mid-size businesses. We work with individuals and teams through workshops, group or one-on-one sessions. I corporate-speak on topics such as, leadership, mindset, communication, business ethics, workplace diversity and team engagement. After successfully retiring from my 24 years in International Shipping, a business turnover of $70 million, with a motivated team in excess of 300 in 14 branches spread throughout the Pacific, I wanted to take what I loved doing in business and share those skills with others.

Most important business lesson you’ve learned over the past few years? I

would say - being myself, believing in myself, investing in myself and respecting myself. Authenticity and integrity go a long way in business and anyone taking shortcuts in these areas crashes eventually.

Why do you think it’s important to be mentored, and to mentor others in return? It’s egoistic to believe that an

individual holds all the ‘best’ answers and that their thought process is clear from judgement and limiting beliefs, which is why as far back in history, we find kings, leaders, politicians, sportsmen etc.. I’ve invested in having a mentor (advisors, confidants). You have to find someone who has already excelled in the area you’re looking to excel in. They bring you to that destination faster and more efficiently by hedging on the lessons they’ve already mastered. The value in that should be the priority we place in ensuring we have the best mentors in our lives. The quality of our lives will be vastly improved and the people that we interact with benefit from learning from us.

Did you have a mentor who has helped you? Absolutely I have. From a very young

age of 22, my business career had grown fast and I was very blessed to have found a mentor to guide me through a period which needed many challenging decisions. With the insights and thinking process that I learned through this time, I believe that the decisions I made from that time onwards had the greatest impact on my career achievements and the

35

meanings I put on what my life was about.

Advice for aspiring young Gold Coasters who might want to follow in your footsteps... You don’t have to know what

you want to be, but you have to be the best you can be. Know who you are, invest in yourself, believe in your dreams and abilities; help others succeed and always remember that life is an exciting adventure that starts with our attitude.

Fave coffee/dining/bar on the GC? Best

Kate Hardy partner run a food + grocery wholesaling business. We buy clearance job lots from multinational companies e.g. Arnotts, Coca Cola, Schweppes, Kraft and Cadbury and redistribute to the discount market e.g. Cheap as Chips, The Reject Shop and local ‘mum and dad’ traders. We have also just started importing our own range of food products under our own label, Hardy’s Quality. I’m also a part time model.

Most important business lesson you’ve learned over the past few years?

Not to skip the process - there is a process to everything and followed properly you will always get a good result.

Describe ‘you’ in five words: Mum, Wife,

Manager, Organiser, Model.

Tell us a little about what you do…

My husband and I and our business

Why do you think it’s important to be mentored, and to mentor others in return? I believe it is really important to have

someone to talk to and ask for advice. I don’t like to take unnecessary risks especially when I can just ask the question and take

the guessing game out of issues. It is really important to help others in any way, I’m a firm believer what comes around goes around .

Did you have a mentor who has helped you in the past? My mentor is definitely my

husband, Lee, who has taught me to be a very self assured woman and encourages me in all walks of life.

Advice for aspiring young Gold Coasters who might want to follow in your footsteps... My advice for anyone getting into business is to work hard - nothing comes to you in life without hard work - you have to go after it. Also, always watch the overheads and wages - if not managed properly it can really hurt your business.

Fave dining on the GC? My favourite restaurants are Omeros Bros and Fellini.

Alison Atia with skin concerns... or just because of their sheer disappointment with the lack of results achieved by what was available in the market.

Do you have a favourite Skin O2 product? For skincare it would have to be

Alison Atia doing business in Dubai while attending Arab Health. Alison Atia, Managing Director of Skin O2 chats about the wonderful world of skincare and what we should be doing to take care of ourselves as the weather cools down.

How did you get involved in skin/ body care? The love of getting perfect skin

got me into this industry. I used to suffer from acne and sensitivity so I became obsessed with cosmetic ingredients and the side effects they have on skin. Being a beauty therapist and fortunate to work together with my life partner, Dr. Aaron Atia, we both shared the passion to provide better results for our patients’ dermatological and body concerns. We were frustrated at the low concentration of high quality ingredients and cheap, ineffective carriers in most cosmetics used by patients April 2012

the Daily Essential Travel Pack. For make-up I could not live without my Mineral Compact for flawless looking skin - as my boys say, ‘don’t talk to mummy until she has had her morning cup of Green Coffee!’ You would never catch me out of the house without a Skin O2 glam bag of all Skin O2 goodies especially my Plump-a-Licious Lip Gloss and paint on ‘Fake It Till You Make It’ Mascara. Once a week I am addicted to using the Skin O2 Teeth Whitening Pen, and treat myself to a mini home facial with a Skin O2 Bio-Active Collagen Mask. Nightly I could not go without my Love Your Lashes Treatment Oil.

if there is one key message you’d like to share with the world about Skin O2, what is it? Discover the secret and experience the

difference for yourself! Say goodbye to makeup that is just for cover up and wear make-up that treats your skin while you where it.

What are your tips for taking care of skin with the coming season changes? Take care by repairing from last season’s

36

damage and prepare for the season ahead. We focus on repairing issues from summer’s damage with products like Ultra Clear Serum and our take-home and in-salon Bio-Active Brightening Masks to help even out skin tone. To prepare for the change in weather you should use a good multivitamin skin cream that can penetrate transdermally - essential food for your face! When the season changes it is always a good idea to see your beauty therapist for a good professional medi-facial and advice on the best personalised home care for your skin.

Any news from the Skin O2 HQ to share with us? We are mostly focused on meeting

the demand in export for our high quality Australian goods. We just brought out a travel size version of our popular facial wipes and I shouldn’t be saying this, but Sweet Talk Get Fresh Organic Mint Mouth Spray for a hit of instant mind clarity will be hitting the beauty counters soon. So you ‘gotta have n grab’ one of those for your bag for some extra cheeky confidence! www.skino2.com.au

Facing

‘The Situation’ head on Jersey Shore fans, hold on to your seats. Guess who decided to pop up on the Gold Coast? The Situation!

M

ike ‘The situation’ sorrentino is best known for his rather obscene, jovial and egotistical antics (oh, and let’s not forget about the abs!) on the hit show Jersey Shore. The Us reality TV show, which follows the non-stop partying life of eight 20-somethings living together in a house over the summer, should come with a warning. no, not that it’s the trashiest show on TV, but that if you watch it once, it’s liable to lure you into the trivial, often sordid, and always wild world of The situation and his mates like snooki, Jwoww and Pauly D. with season 4 scoring the title of most watched series ever on MTV Australia, with the premiere episode earning highest debut for any show in the channel’s history, we knew we had to get a part of the action. so when we caught word that the MTV star was going to be in town, we jumped on the fan bandwagon and scooted off to Vanity nightclub on GC’s infamous Glitter strip in surfers Paradise. “Fashionably” late – as most celebs like to call it – Mike strutted on in with his older brother Marc and their posse in tow. Rocking out to Marc’s DJ set, the crowd went wild. Luckily, I was able to score a quick couple of minutes with Mike after a “smoke break”. My first question: ‘so Mike, are you April 2012

planning on getting down and dirty with the locals tonight?’ (Oh gosh, did I really just say that?!) He laughs, “where are all my ladies at?” with his exclusive nightclub appearance at the leading clubs sydney, Melbourne and, of course, the Gold Coast, I don’t think he’ll have to look too far. Mike explained it was his first-ever trip to Australia and he was “so pumped” to meet his devoted Aussie fans. And he sure didn’t disappoint mingling with the crowd and taking snap shots whenever he could. “You know what? I live life moment by moment, because you only live once, and with no regrets and I just want to have a great time.” speaking of the show, Mike says Jersey Shore has changed his life. “I lost my job - it was a nine to five job like everybody else and I didn’t know what I was going to do. I thought, ‘what have I got?’ And I always had an unbelievable body [with] a six-pack and people would always say, ‘You’ve got to do something with that eventually’. And I was 25, you know, so I had to make a move. so I sent my pictures in [to audition] for underwear modelling and then they called me back and said, ‘where have you been?’. eventually I signed an underwear modelling contract, and I was only doing it for three weeks when I was

44

referred to MTV for the [Jersey Shore] pilot they were doing. It was pretty crazy and it’s been like a rocketship ever since,” he says. “It is unbelievable. The name ‘The situation’ is everywhere nationally and internationally. some of the phrases I said have become pop culture trends. And in between the endorsements and sponsorships, and the offers for movies and other shows, it’s unbelievable what’s going on.” It may seem Mike’s head can get a little too big for his shoulders, but this time he seemed somewhat humbled by his success. “I’m blessed,” he says. “I shake every hand, and kiss every cheek.” As for the show’s future, Mike assures us he won’t be going anywhere for a while. “I want to make a career out of this. I love the camera and the camera loves me, so I’m going to continue at it.” season 5 of Jersey Shore finds the housemates back on their home turf of seaside Heights – where all the fist-pumping magic began and a pop culture phenomenon was born.

You’ll feel a surge to be independent and make your own mark but remember not to forget to take your most valuable supporters with you. You can’t always do everything on your own. taurus – april 20 – May 21 this is a great time for you to reassess your financial status and look at how you’re managing your money. there will be some opportunities in the first half of april for you to follow your instincts and put essential measures into place but don’t get caught in your comfort zone and miss the chance to make positive changes for your future. Gemini – May 21 – June 21 try not to over think things. You’ll want to move forward and may feel like something is holding you back. Be patient, rome wasn’t built in a day and your ideas will certainly come to fruition in the second half of april. In the meantime, work while you wait and continue looking at how you can bring your ideas into reality. Cancer – June 21 – July 22 taking the initiative for your home and family will be most important. there will be times when your goals aren’t the same as others so try not to be disheartened when they go off and do their own thing. this is a good time for you to do some things for yourself - the others will catch up when what you’re doing looks more attractive to them. leo – July 22 – august 23 this month you’ll feel the urge to stand up and put your stamp on everything. Use your organisational skills to get those projects moving. Don’t let fears and insecurities you’ve been holding onto, shape your future. remember

nothing is set in stone and you’ll pave the way for new beginnings more than you realise. Virgo – august 23 - september 22 Don’t sweat the small stuff. You’ll feel a lot of changes happening around you and wonder where you fit into the picture. While work is your main focus, you need to avoid over analysing the behaviour of others. Look at what you want to achieve and how you’re going to achieve it. libra – september 22 – October 23 Your personal nature is to pay attention to relationships, peace, harmony, fairness and justice for all. remember Libra that not everyone has the same ideas about these areas and this month you’ll be drawn to think about what is best for you. take time out to pamper yourself or go on that day trip you have been planning. Enjoy the moment and don’t feel guilty for thinking of yourself, you need to do it occasionally. scorpio – October 23 – November 22 transformation and regeneration, using your resources to get what you want and moving in a new direction will reignite your passion for life. You deserve to move forward scorpio and you will see new ways to do this during this month. Life isn’t just meant to be lived, it’s meant to be enjoyed. Your goals and objectives will become your focus and so they should. No one can move mountains like you can when you put your heart into it. sagittarius – November 22 – December 22 Your freedom and independence with be the focus for the first half of this month. there will be times when you feel hemmed in, but this is just making you readjust your focus and be more productive with your time. try not to be too rebellious when you are challenged, this is happening for a very good reason. speaking your

truth and making the most of your independent nature to move forward in the direction you want to head will be important in the second half of the month. Capricorn – December 22 – January 20 this month may see you in conflict with which direction is the best for you to pursue. Material rewards are just around the corner for you and this will hinge on the decisions you make this month for your home, family and career. It’s really important for you to focus on how you’re going to fulfil your obligations and stay focused on the end result. Putting too much focus on your financial situation may distract you from your bigger picture. Aquarius – January 21 – February 19 this time of year will see you making good progress psychologically and bringing your focus into the areas of the self, leadership and taking initiative. this is a great time for you to reflect on what this means to you and start moving forward to make the changes necessary to get ahead in life. While the opinions of your family and friends are important, what you want is more important, so stay focused on that and you’ll start to see things take shape in the second half of april. Pisces – February 19 – March 20 this is a really good time to reflect on how others affect you and make the most of this information. this month will compel you to be more assertive and driven towards making thing happen for yourself. Money will be the focus this month, but you can’t allow yourself to get too caught up in the finer details. Have some empathy and compassion for yourself and reflect on what you want, rather than what everyone else wants for you.

LAST WORD

Mel B. with Sarah Blinco

“So tell me what you want, what you really really want!” …Oh, sorry, I forgot that I’m writing, not singing. What a shame, I was doing my best ‘90s sing-a-long pop voice too. If you aren’t sure of the origin of “I wanna really really really wanna zig a zig ahh”, or you think Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Posh Spice and Scary Spice are the names of a new range of cooking flavours, then you’re probably very confused by now. Let me explain… In this issue of Get it we’ve been addressing the issue of ‘mentoring’, which got me to thinking about contemporary high profile celebrity mentors. There are of course, many, but a series that will inevitably be huge this year is The X Factor. It’s the number one series in the UK now, maintaining an obsessive following in 2011, complete with scandals and publicity stunts. For sure, it will follow suit here – we even have our own little piece of ‘Cool Britannia’ involved (hence the Spice Girls references above) - indeed Melanie Brown, aka Scary Spice, or Mel B as she likes to be known, is a judge and musical mentor to “wannabe” (sorry, couldn’t resist!) Australian contestants. Love or hate her, Mel B is a legitimate choice for her high profile role on The X Factor. She knows a thing or two about the music industry, having conquered the Spice World… er, globe as part of the Spice Girls – a group who, according to Wikipedia, “as of January 2010… have sold more than 75 million

records worldwide.” The Spice Girls became the fastest selling British group since The Beatles when they released their debut album Spice, which still remains the best-selling album by a female group in history. They hold too many records to count here, but thanks to their fame in the days where fans actually had to buy albums, these outspoken advocates of ‘girl power’ became millionaires who hold a Guinness Book of World Records status for ‘Most No. 1 Entries in the UK Charts’, and ‘Most Consecutive No. 1’s for a New Act’. The group’s enduring popularity brought about one of the most successful concert tours of 2007-08 with their reunion trek grossing more than $70 million. Sadly the tour did not “Viva Forever” and fans Down Under missed out on this highly anticipated show – allegedly the girls had had enough by the time they finished in the UK and USA. Mel B did however make her way to our sunny shores. As a solo entertainer she has released three successful albums and merged into television, appearing on the US Dancing With The Stars, launching her own reality show, Mel B: It’s A Scary World and of course our very own version of The X Factor, on our screens this year for a third season, plus as a host of this year’s Australian Dancing With The Stars. Mel B was a guest mentor on Australia’s first series of The X Factor, was a controversial favourite during season two, and is excited to be here for a permanent judging

role in 2012. Recently she has also been shining under the Aussie media spotlight as a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, encouraging other yummy “Mama”s to ‘spice up their lives’ following childbirth, but to do it in a safe and steady way. Six months after the birth of her daughter and only 20 weeks after starting on Jenny Craig, Mel has lost an impressive 15 kilos, reaching her goal weight of 60kg. She enthuses that she not only feels better about herself but has more energy to boot. Ever the vivacious Spice Girl, she says of her weight loss feat, “my husband Stephen is beyond excited, he’s loving my new body and has showered me with sexy lingerie. Girls, if you’ve got it, flaunt it to the man you love – don’t lose the fun lose the weight!” She does appear to be the Spice Girl who will “Never Give Up On The Good Times”… good on you, Mel, it’s nice to have you in Oz.
