New Arrivals from Paris & Milan

From t he edit or ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

In this day and age you’d be forgiven for thinking success was all about money, fame and power. After all, we see stories that revolve around these three areas day in, day out. But success is simply defined in the dictionary as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”. The truth is, success can mean so many different things to so many different people. I believe it stems more from what makes our life worthwhile, significant and meaningful. Is it your family contingent, marriage or relationship? The fact that you get to spend every day with your children; a tight-knit group of friends who would walk over hot coals for you; you love your day job (even though you’re no prime minister), or that you’ve overcome a major health issue and are stronger and wiser for it. To me success simply means being happy. I live on the bright side, it’s much nicer over here. I believe if you are generally happy, everything else will fall into place; you will love your life and attract amazing opportunities to it. After all, there are plenty of wonderful stories of people who seem to “have it all” but give it away to go and lead the life they actually want. Success, for me, really boils down to whether you are proud of the life you’ve created. If you took away the money, power and/or fame and status, would you be happy?

Liz

In this edition, we look at what success is, how to achieve it and the meaning of being “successful”.

1 2 3 4

You know exactly what you want. At the store, you: A Buy the outfit off the rack and some accessories on the way out. B Try it on, then put it back on the rack so you can think about it. C Go to the counter where they are holding the outfit. You called ahead. It’s your best friend’s party and you need a new outfit, what do you do? A Plan a full day of shopping. B Window shop before heading home, surely you have an appropriate dress already. C Plan an ensemble suitable for the event and browse the internet before calling the store to hold your chosen gear. How often do you use your credit card? A All the time! B Rarely, I hate to have outstanding bills. C Occasionally, I use it for specific purchases. The store you planned to shop at has a very crowded sale, you: A Dive in. B Avoid it. C Go directly to the items you had on your list.

9

Do you keep your shopping receipts? A Rarely, I usually forget. B Yes, in case I need to return an item. C Always, I balance my budget against what I spent. It’s your partner’s birthday tomorrow and you need a gift, you: A Grab the first thing he would like, then a few more items. B Change your mind a dozen times before buying another shirt. C Bought the present two months ago. How well do you save money? A There’s always a sale, so I always spend it. B I often under-spend so I put away the rest. C My budget is carefully calculated. You have a pile of birthday money to buy yourself a gift, you: A Go wild and spend every cent. B Buy a few necessities before banking the rest until you can think of something you really want. C Make a list of everything you would really like that will fit into your limit.

Mostly A: Mistress of impulse You are the reason for impulse items, if something grabs your attention you cannot bear to pass it by. That’s not a big deal if you pass the chewing gum stand at the checkout but taking you to a pet store could be asking for trouble! Mostly B: Hesitation queen You know what you want, but can’t seem to commit. Once you have the item you begin questioning just how much you want or need it. Careful thought is a good skill but let yourself free sometimes and push away the buyer’s remorse. Mostly C: Systematic shopper As the mistress of lists you have never forgotten a grocery item or been late with a birthday present. Friends stand in awe at your organising skills and ability to shop for an outfit in less than 15 minutes.

Ben Mingay performed for The Desperate Housewives in Dirty Dancing LA and has sung the US National Anthem for the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in front of 60,000 people. LOCAL PROFILE

We’ve gone west! Gold Coast beauty turned country girl Ella Rae Wilson Rose, packed up her GC life and moved to Springsure in central Queensland, almost 900km away. She spends five minutes with Get it magazine to tell us what it’s like, what she’s doing, and the transition, challenges and rewards shopping at one end, and then the vineyards, picturesque countryside and waterholes in the hinterland at the other. Life in a country town is rewarding, our homestead is classically original, situated in the heart of the property’s picturesque valley, with a creek that runs through the property. Our horses live in paddocks around our house. Life out here is no doubt beautiful, but also quite complex as you are faced with so many real impediments such as drought, floods and especially the value of your produce. I take my hat off to the people of the land, they truly are remarkable.

Pic: Cherie Ryan

How has the transition been from coast to country? I loved living on the Gold Coast, living there since I was 2. The Gold Coast offered so many opportunities. Like a lot of girls I loved to catch up with friends, dine out on a Friday night, take the dogs to the spit on a Saturday, then come Sunday I would be back out training my horses for the next upcoming event. I always had a set routine to juggle my lifestyle with the horses. However, my passion has always been with horses. I attended Somerset College and then went to college which was in the country, which led me to working for some of the best horse trainers in the country. After years of hard work I was given the opportunity to apply for my dream job in the agricultural business. What have been your biggest challenges? Distance and adjusting to the remoteness out here. The corner store is not five minutes down the street. The corner store is in fact 46km away and our closest Woolworths is 1.5 hours’ drive, no taxis, finding my new hairdresser and beautician! (Just because we are so far out does not mean we should go without). I miss the beach! What have been the rewards since making the move? I get to do what I love every single day.

Working in my dream job, training and competing with my horses and meeting my partner and best friend of five years. And another reward is without doubt the hard working, generous and genuine people out here and, of course, the lifestyle. What are the differences in the two communities? The Gold Coast is truly is the best of both worlds. You have the beaches, the restaurants, the night spots and the March 2015

What makes you love what you are now doing and what drives you forward? I am right where I intended to be when I set my plan five years ago. My love and passion for horses as well as my ambitious heart lead me out here and I wouldn’t trade a day. I love what I am doing for the reason that I wake up to my horses each day, live in one of the prettiest towns in Queensland, work my dream job every day and I am central to many of the big 14

HEALTH Michelle Merrifield, Yoga Guru he’s one of our home-grown success stories and yoga guru Michelle Merrifield continues to kick goals when it comes to her vocation. The founder and operator of Essence of Living Yoga & Pilates studio and International Teacher Training Academy, discovered yoga and Pilates at the tender age of 16 and hasn’t looked back. She knew then and there it was her true calling and has since been practicing and teaching it for 17 years. Last year Michelle was chosen to join Australia’s most elite practitioners at a super retreat in the Govinda Valley, New South Wales, where only 11 leading yoga teacher-trainers presented a series of in-depth sessions at the five-day retreat. “Through the illuminating practice of yoga we get the rare opportunity to see our fluctuating mind, and by shining a light on the dark spots buried deep inside our bodies we begin to face our truth,”says Michelle.“The more we purify our bodies the lighter and clearer we feel. Once you become clear on your intention to purify your mind and open your heart, the whole world will begin to sparkle from the inside out.” In February she opened Essence of Living in Southport and was a speaker at the inaugural The Holistic Project event. BUSINESS Nicole Aprato, Business Owner ringing colour and shape to the spaces we live, work and play in, is what owner and designer of Geometric Collective Nicole Aprato does best. The Gold Coast-based artist turns images of much-loved pets into modern works, with pet owners as far away as America commissioning her portraits. “I love what I do and I love bringing a smile to people’s face through my designs. It is lovely knowing there are so many loved pets out there,” Nicole says. Nicole studied interior design and was eager to get creative. After having a baby at the end of 2013 it was important for her to find something she enjoyed and that she could do from home. The Geometric Collective was only born at the beginning of 2015, but she hasn’t looked back. With a love for animals, Nicole understands how important pets are to a person and captures that in the attention to detail of her portraits. She also specialises in prints of scenery, flowers and other animals and will this year turn her sights to homewares, including linen and wallpaper design, as well as seek out opportunities in the fashion industry. geometriccollective.bigcartel.com

LIFE Alana Fitzgerald, Author rom life on a farm in Tamworth to the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast, Alana Fitzgerald’s personal journey of wisdom, humility and perseverance have been brought on by physical and emotional abuse, the loss of loved ones and her own daily struggles and battles within herself to be all that she can. These events and her life’s path are what prompted her to share her stories in the hope of inspiring others in her new book Because I Can – a compilation of positive affirmations. She has also released a self-titled album. “Through life’s ups and downs, these simple sayings helped me get through and out of darkness. This all helped me remain positive and come out the other end, not unscathed but a little wiser,” she says. “When I first started to write the book, I was in an abusive relationship and the affirmations helped lift my spirits; even if only slightly, it was some relief. They have helped me through some very hard times and I hope that they can do the same for other people.” alanafitzgerald.com.au

irst impressions: We are definitely judged and we judge others. It’s sad but true. Seven seconds is all you have, that’s right; our perception of someone is formed in such a short amount of time. We all know one of the great secrets to success is simply presentation. However, this does not mean if your hair, make-up, nails and clothes are looking sensational you are entitled to hormonal rages and being horrible. Being successful also has a huge amount to do with the lovely person on the inside and the brains behind the beauty. The job interview So you are into the new year and it is

time for a new job, how will you present yourself? Some food for thought…What kind of a job are you going for? What industry? You don’t want to go for a position in an office environment and not look tailored and well put together. Day-to-day work You may have a great job but your successful performance is aided by how you feel and let’s face it, if you look good, you feel good. Wake up 10 minutes earlier just so you can pop on a little make-up and make sure your hair is intact. Day-to-day life There is nothing worse than popping to the shops feeling haggard and looking like

it too! Make the effort to neaten up your hair - I love a quick bun for this. The best four products in the world would have to be a really good quality BB cream, bronzer, mascara and the trusty paw paw ointment. A girl should never leave the front door without this on. So remember, seven seconds is all you have so be sure to leave your best first impression and feel great all at the same time. Amanda Higl is a well-known Gold Coast hair stylist and make-up artist. Interview with Leanne Hart from Get it magazine, a Vision Bundall client What made you start up with Matt at Vision? A hectic lifestyle running your own business leaves very little personal time so I began training with Matt to give me a weekly stress release and force me to be accountable to take time out for my health and sanity. What is your goal at Vision? My goal was to tone up, improve my fitness and feel good about myself. What have your results been? I found I had trouble with my balance. Now Matt makes me jump on boxes – you have to see it to believe it. I’m stronger, have muscle tone

and I love every session. Why is a Vision studio different to your everyday gym? Matt is like the devil on my shoulder, refusing to let me make excuses for not training and encouraging me to be better every week. The results I’ve achieved have certainly far outweighed my original expectations. How many people did you know when you started at Vision? No one, now it’s like being part of an extended family. Everyone’s goals are different but the support is the same for all of us. What would you tell people considering starting personal training? Training at Vision Bundall can literally change your life.

military strategies for better business hen you think about the military, strict regimen and battle may come to mind. But one man is using the discipline behind his approach to help businesses achieve great results. Laurus Consulting director Steve Scott has used the experience he gained during his 22-year military career to support business leaders in better managing their everchanging environments. “The military is very clear about what strategy is and very disciplined when formulating it. It is a very separate activity to planning,” he says.“Strategy is about the key decisions leaders make regarding the deployment of their resources to win a competition. “A bit like moving chess pieces around a board, a business strategy should be broad and simple. You make a move in your business to get the upper hand and then assess how your opposition responds to it and be ready and willing to change your strategy again.” Whether you manage a large corporation or small home-based business, the principles around planning and strategy will be similar. Here are his top military-strategy tips: Prepare for change: Leaders need to become hypersensitive to environmental changes and adapt their strategy accordingly to maintain a competitive edge. March 2015

A bit like moving chess pieces around a board, a business strategy should be broad and simple. You make a move in your business to get the upper hand and then assess how your opposition responds to it and be ready and willing to change your strategy again Put ‘strategy’ at the top of your mind: Business owners or managers often neglect their strategy or rarely refer to it. Instead, ‘strategy’ should be discussed regularly in management meetings. Be structured in youR approach: Create a structured approach to develop a business intuition that allows you to routinely identify changes, register them, assess their impact and create responsive strategies – not reactive strategies. Delegate responsibilities: Give key people with specific skills and knowledge certain areas of the business environment to monitor for change, register it, assess it and recommend a strategic response. Develop habits around the OODA loop: The OODA loop 30

is an overt thinking process designed by Colonel John Boyd of the US Air Force during the Korean conflict. It is a four-stage cycle where you start with observation (the knowledge and experiences you’ve collected); orientation (what you understand about that knowledge and experience in your business context); decision (what you intend to do with your resources based upon this new understanding); action (get on and execute your strategy and create new knowledge and experiences to observe). Commit to positive leadership: You cannot not influence. You are influencing all the time, but just because you are influencing doesn’t mean you are leading effectively. So understand and manage it. Leaders must also lead themselves before attempting to lead others. Leadership can only be learned. Clearly share your vision: The moment you have a second person on board is the moment you have a team and you must communicate a vision and a purpose so that person can function in the context you need them to. Learning in the 21st century Gumnut pods, giant mushrooms and sunflowers – welcome to the May Gibbs Prep Precinct at A.B. Paterson College t is easy to let your imagination soar in this play-garden of magical delight and wonderment that has been inspired by the age-old tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, created by May Gibbs. The college’s new learning precinct takes students into a magical world where their creativity can be ignited; a world where they feel small and encapsulated by the wonders around them; and a sensory place where they can read inside giant gumnut pods, sit with their friends on giant flower buds or play on a gigantic caterpillar. Principal Brian Grimes says: “In our Prep to Year 3 phase of learning, we want our students to develop a sense of wonderment through igniting their natural curiosity. This demands a vibrant and inspiring learning environment; one in which our children are excited by all they see and do. This learning environment must be carefully structured, but also stimulate their imaginations and creativity.” The new prep precinct and the Prep-Year 3 Library was designed with these principles in mind. The new learning precinct encourages creative thinking, collaboration in play, communication through storytelling and drama, a love of reading and the development of literacy, social skills and a love of learning. Above all, it provides a wonderful opportunity for the development of positive relationships and the harnessing of the students’ natural curiosity which, in turn, transform the physical into a thriving and dynamic environment for learning. What a wonderful place to spend your first years of school!

You are welcome to visit this wonderland of creativity and to see for yourselves why this new learning environment may be just the place for your child to begin their own learning journey. But this new facility is only the first step in this journey. From Prep-Year 12, A.B.

Paterson College is a school embracing the development of the 21st century, immersing its students in creative, collaborative, differentiated, higher-order, open-ended teaching and learning in preparation for their future in a 21st century world. The college invites you to experience the A.B. Paterson College dynamic for yourselves at the first of its 2015 Open Days on Wednesday, April 29 from 11am12.30pm. Centraal Station, image courtes

The other side of msterdam is famous the world-over, but often not for the attributes it deserves to be recognised for. Travel television series, Globe Trekker, sums up the city’s wider-known fame as being all about “sex, drugs and bicycles”. While it is true that this is one of the only places in the world where prostitution and smoking marijuana are both legal, Amsterdam is also one of the most charming cities in Europe. Additionally, this city − capital of the Netherlands − undoubtedly leads on a world scale when it comes to green living (no pun intended), energy efficiency and ditching the car in favour of cycling, which equates to no end in benefits for people and our planet. Just don’t j-walk or you risk being the recipient of unamused head-shaking from a highway of cyclists coming at you from all directions (this I know from personal experience). I’d only very briefly stopped in Amsterdam previously and this time round − on a crisp and chilly winter’s week − I finally had the chance to properly explore and, wow, am I glad I did! If you’re longing for a taste of Europe but only have a few days, Amsterdam is your answer. On the practical side, it’s extremely easy to get around; simple to navigate by foot, or catch a ride on one of the trams that scale the main streets branching away from Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal). Amsterdam is modern, cosmopolitan, reasonably priced compared with other capitals in the region, and by all accounts, safe. From an adventurer’s perspective, this city is just lovely, no matter what the season. March 2015

The medieval centre (where you’ll spend the majority of your time as a visitor) is built on romantic canals (Amsterdam is often referred to as “Venice of the north”) and features over 1500 bridges. The old centre boasts glorious cathedrals, as well as colourful warehouse buildings lining the water’s edge, most of which were built a few hundred years ago to accommodate a thriving shipping trade during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. America’s greatest cities barely existed when this place was humming along back in the day and, in fact, Amsterdam was home to the first stock exchange, paving the way for modern capitalism. Today, the Canal Ring (dug during the 1600s) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a few lucky land owners who carry on centuriesold traditions of living large in such a posh and picturesque neighbourhood. Within the city centre you’ll be blown away by the sheer beauty of the architecture, flowers are everywhere and thousands of bicycles are hooked up to quaint bridges brimming the canals. The whole place oozes history and it’s pretty to boot. It’s easy to want to take a picture at every turn, but worth remembering to put the camera down for a moment to simply soak up the scene. Shopping centres are housed in lavish structures dating back 200 years or more; and the pinnacle for a traveller − Amsterdam Centraal − an absolutely spectacular NeoRenaissance building, which has been open to 32

the public since 1889, should be appreciated under both sun and moonlight. This spot is a helpful ‘central’ landmark to make your way to and from when exploring the city. Of note too, is the tourist information office situated across from the station’s entrance. Unmissable and unique attractions include the Van Gogh Museum, among many, many other extraordinary museums and showcases, depending on your tastes; Anne Frank’s House where she wrote her famous diary during World War II; and exhibitions and shows − there really is something for everyone. The curious among you should veer left off the main strip heading away from Centraal, where you’ll meander into the infamous, but not-so-intimidating, Red Light District. Aside from the self-guided wandering or cycling and visiting of famous attractions of your choosing, I highly recommend exploring the city via one of the many canal boat options. By day or night, it’s a sublime and interesting way to pass the time and learn more about this dreamy destination. Foodies can rejoice too because there is a lot to choose from and many good meals, happy hour and cocktail specials are scheduled around the city. Cheese is a big deal here, and rightly so − it’s fantastic! Every few streets you’ll happen upon a cheese specialty store with samples; it would be rude not to try. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the hour-long Reypenaer Cheese + Wine Tasting. This mini-workshop provided a nice opportunity to learn about the process of

cheese making, why it’s such a prominent industry in the Netherlands; how to match certain types of cheese with wine varieties, and of course, to taste-test. We stocked up on some vintage Reypenaer before leaving too, although it didn’t last long under our guard. There are three ways Amsterdam should be absorbed at street level on foot or by bike; water-level on one of the easily accessible canal experiences; and gazing down upon it all from a sky bar, martini in hand. One of the most popular and easy-to-find (adjacent to Centraal) is SkyLounge at DoubleTree by Hilton, and anyone is free to pop up for a beverage to enjoy as the sun sets across the Northern Hemisphere. Tourist attractions aside, if all you want to do is wander, shop, take photos, eat and drink, that’s OK too because you’re inevitably going to soak up this beautiful city’s energy anyway. In Amsterdam, it’s just as enjoyable chilling out as it is filling a day by ticking off a vast list of must-see attractions. Amsterdam offers the traveller a wealth of culture, new experiences and delights for all the senses. All you need to worry about is the difference between a café and coffee shop... only one sells coffee.

Pet lover Helen McNall says you can make a difference – one bowl at a time Why is it important to care about your dog’s (or any pet’s) nutrition? “We love them like children, but feed them like livestock” is a good way of looking at what you feed your dog. I make women happy, no matter what age or size. What has been your biggest achievement? It’s that people trust me. I love having people return time after time because they’ve received heaps of compliments about their outfit. It’s knowing I’ve made a difference to a special time in their life. Why do you love what you do? It’s the satisfaction of seeing people happy. I love seeing the three generations come in; daughter, mother and grandmother and having a ball; and Nanna spoiling her granddaughter. How do you define success? You’re successful when you’re comfortable and happy being you. Money has nothing to it. What do you do in your down time? I garden and spend time with my grandchildren. In my life, it is living a life I can look back on and feel happy about. Why do you love what you do? It is a challenge and there is always a lot to learn. How do you define success? Success in life is firstly to capitalise on the enormous opportunities this wonderful country offers. Get an education, get a job, be responsible, be hard working and look after your health. Beyond that, it is to challenge and develop yourself. What do you do in your down time? I love keeping fit, the beach and to relax I do cryptic crosswords. My great love is gardening. How to become With Dr Elen Apthomas

We all want to be more successful. But success can have many different definitions depending on your perspective and culture any people in a Western capitalistic culture automatically jump to thinking of success as relating to monetary wealth, fame and power. Success penetrates into many other often more important aspects of our lives; the quality of our relationships with loved ones and ourselves, our physical health and levels of fitness, our mental wellbeing including levels of happiness and it is all greatly affected by our depth of sense of purpose and spiritual beliefs about the bigger picture of what we really think life is all about. Success emanates from people who have found their passion in life and experience it regularly. They feel fulfilled and highly energised with a desire to give back to society of not just their finances but also their time.

I have always found it paradoxical that in a “free society where we can do whatever we choose (without harming others, of course) that we have no conscious control over what we actually feel passionate and excited about. This can be a great guide to help mould your life to become more fulfilling and, hence, more successful. Achieving a holistic version of success requires looking at all aspects of your life; eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising, connecting with yourself through stressreduction programs such as yoga, meditation

37

and mindfulness, putting down the iPad and spending time with your family and nature. Consider doing volunteer work with people less fortunate than yourself. This is a sure way to fast track feeling grateful. Forcing yourself to focus, do one thing at a time. This helps you to become truly present giving each moment of your life a fresh new invigorating quality. Success in its many various forms is there to be had by everyone. If you want more love, give more love. If you want to be appreciated more, truly appreciate others. Be your own success story and see the change in the world.

or thousands of years people have munched on therapeutic plants to ease their aches and pains. Even animals have an instinct for herbs. The elephants in Sri Lanka seek out gotu kola leaves, which also happen to be recommended in Ayurvedic medicine for longevity and memory. All ancient civilisations have used herbs for medicine, from the Babylonians to the Greeks, Egyptians and Chinese. Although the tradition of herbal medicine may have been intertwined with myths and old wives’ tales, modern herbalism has kept up with the times. As more herbs are put under the microscope, we are finding that they stand up to rigorous scientific investigation, confirming their centuries of use. For instance, St John’s wort, long used for those of a melancholy or nervous disposition, has been reported in medical journals to be as effective as antidepressants but without the side effects. How do herbs work? Herbs work to improve and assist the body’s innate functions, rather than override them. For instance, I use echinacea to improve the functioning of the immune system, helping to resist infection. Other herbs, including the ‘tonic’ herbs, such as Siberian ginseng, licorice and withania, have the ability to help the body return to its inherent homoeostatis, or equilibrium. They can be as helpful in an overactive (hyper) state as in underactive (hypo) states. A couple of cups of herbal tisane each day

Although the tradition of herbal medicine may have been intertwined with myths and old wives’ tales, modern herbalism has kept up with the times. is a simple way to improve your health and wellbeing. Blending your teas If you are new to herbal tisanes, why not buy small packets of each herb you like the sound of and create your own blends. But avoid self-diagnosis. If you suspect you are ill, it’s always wise to check with your health care practitioner rather than self-diagnosing and prescribing. The best herbal tea blends The following blends are based on tisanes I find very useful in my herbal practice. If you have difficulty finding one of the herbs in these recipes, it is fine to do without or substitute it with another herb. CALM: This blend is wonderful when you have a lot on at work or school. It’s also good for

times of emotional stress, such as relationship difficulties or looking after sick or frail relatives. Withania, rooibos, zizyphus, Siberian ginseng, licorice, ground cardamom NIGHTY-NIGHT: If you have problems getting to sleep, drink a couple of small cups after dinner. If you have problems with waking through the night, drink it closer to bedtime. Hops, valerian, lavender, withania, zizyphus, cracked rooibos, licorice, hibiscus, crushed ginger FORGET-ME-NOT: Best for memory and concentration. A PLACE OF

really good way to start any pilgrimage is to begin your search by popping the cork on a good bottle of sparkling wine or Champagne. It certainly puts a sparkle in your eye and a spring in your step. Champagne is inspirational and has manufactured creativity and courage to some of the greatest rulers, artists and painters of our time. H Pisces Febr 19 – March 20 The Virgo Full Moon at the start of the month brings relationships into focus and feelings can flow into the open. It’s great to share but be mindful of doing or saying anything you might later regret. A Solar Eclipse in Pisces brings an opportunity for a fresh start that comes with a challenge. Pleasingly, if you take up this challenge, you’ll likely see benefits in the future.

H Cancer June 21 – July 22 You’ll be inspired to take action regarding an ambition or goal you have been dreaming about for some time. However, things may take a creative detour as unexpected events could encourage you to take another path. Later, the solar eclipse in Pisces offers an opportunity to explore ideas that could be lifechanging.

H Aries March 20 –April 19 It’s set to be an action-packed month with plenty going on for you. Make time to listen to your intuition and tune into your dreams and you’ll find yourself doing even better. Inspired ideas can give you a channel for your formidable energy, enhancing your success. A feeling of restlessness may hang around you for the month and you may desire to expand your horizons.

H LEO July 22 – Aug 23 This month can be exhilarating, encouraging you to expand your horizons, see key aspects of your life from a fresh perspective and explore ideas associated with a new direction. Even though there are times when you could clash with others, the resulting sparks bring opportunities for romance and creative genius.

H Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 22 Get ready for unexpected happenings this month and welcome those disruptions that seem to upset your best-laid plans. Though inconvenient, they could encourage fresh perspectives and lively new options. The solar eclipse on the 20th in your romance zone can coincide with a budding liaison that fulfils a fantasy. H Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 22 It’s a great month for exploring as you’ll be keen to push against your limits and search out ideas and opportunities that could have big implications for you further down the line. As Uranus links with Pluto you might decide to invest in a hobby or creative enterprise that allows you to express a unique talent.

H Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 The full moon in your sign on March 5th can signal the completion of a project or a key milestone in an important relationship. It’s a time to reward yourself and celebrate what you’ve achieved. Later in the month, don’t ignore a call to change your routine or transform your lifestyle as doing so could signal a positive new start.

H Taurus April 20 – May 21 The full moon in Virgo on the 5th spotlights romantic opportunities and encourages you to share your feelings. On the 13th, as Mercury glides into Pisces, the chance to connect with new people can enhance your chances of success at work and in love. Do make time to kick back and unwind at times though, as going full throttle constantly will not be good for you. H Gemini May 21 – June 21 It can be a busy month filled with exciting opportunities, new faces and useful information. Your social scene picks up speed too and this can be the catalyst for changes both big and small. As Uranus links with Pluto mid-month, the solution you’ve been seeking could show up unexpectedly. The chance of a fresh start might appeal to you also.

H Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20 Life at home certainly won’t be at a standstill this month. It’s time to take action, whether you’re buying, selling or making changes to the home or family dynamics. The Solar Eclipse on the 20th could signal the start of a friendship or romance with a long and interesting road ahead.

H Libra Sept 22 – Oct 23 Dynamic relationship influences can bring change to key relationships. Whatever ideas you’ve had about a significant other could quickly vanish as a side of them you’ve never seen comes into the open, making them even more interesting. Meanwhile, as Venus eases into Taurus midmonth you can reconnect to your most sensuous side.

H Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19 You’ll be juggling opportunities, particularly as one or two of them could reveal options you won’t want to miss. Though it’s early days, your ability to spot trends will highlight those that might impact your life in a positive way. A novel solution to an old problem could relieve a burden and restore inner peace this month too.

mindfulness?

LAST WORD

with Sarah Blinco

Mind reading or

There’s a lot of ‘spooky’ stuff going on around me lately. Or, at least, I would have once deemed it spooky, writes Sarah Blinco

or the past few months I’ve been investigating ghosts… just kidding (although that topic does keep coming up in my circles – weird!). Mindfulness is what I’ve actually been exploring, not only with regards to application in everyday situations, but how it potentially plays a role in what we describe as ‘coincidence’. “How odd,” my friend, Hayley, said at lunch yesterday.“I watched An Officer and a Gentleman for the first time on the weekend, and afterwards when I went into town, there was a huge mobile advertising campaign featuring imagery from the movie”. Ironically, I’d viewed a YouTube clip that very morning referencing this exact scenario – that is, watching an obscure film (for 2015, anyway) and having it come up in a random conversation or appear in your sphere within 24 hours. A week later, out of the blue, a group I was with started a conversation about a terrific read on the Law of Attraction, Ask and it is Given, by Jerry and Esther Hicks. We reminisced on those times when you’re thinking of a person you’ve not heard from in ages all of a sudden they call. Or when you’re contemplating something ‘random’ and arrive at work to find everyone is talking about it. On meeting again the next day, one of our party said unexpectedly he’d just received a text from a mate he’d not heard from in months who wanted to catch up that same afternoon. Coincidence? When he messaged his friend with a recount of our conversations, his friend replied, “Synchronicity my friend, synchronicity.” That is: “…the recognition of two events that are seemingly unrelated or not likely to occur March 2015

together by chance, but are still experienced as being related in some sort of meaningful way.” – The Daily Zen. Are these examples of coincidence, or, something we’ve attracted and drawn into our space? Supposing the latter to be true, imagine what we could do with that insight. Should we pay more attention to coincidence? Lately, I’ve been working on the premise of yes! In fact, I’ve been testing a theory that being mindful about ‘random happenings’ in my world actually makes my life happier because I’ve stopped taking a large number of things for granted. I’ve taken to writing down things that I’d like to happen too, including a time frame. I read these statements (goals, vision, declarations – whatever term you’re comfortable with) out loud daily. The spooky bit? They’ve been coming true! Sure, I could look at it as lucky. However, applying the concept of mindfulness to the everyday, I’m now much more in tune with these ‘coincidences’ than ever before. It’s quite cool to really be noticing how my requests and intentions are coming to life (after appropriate action being applied, of course), often in more interesting ways than I could have dreamed. Website, thedailyzen.org says: ”Coincidence is a wonderful way of moderating and optimizing your mindfulness. The more coincidences or strangely synchronous situations you find yourself acknowledging, the more in-tune you are with your world. Over time, this awareness builds to a point where you notice incredible new connections… It’s not just a random happening or an accident; it’s you acknowledging the interrelatedness of things, 50

realizing that causation is deeper than just A to B. Every action has a reaction”. The reason I’m sharing is because I believe that by paying genuine attention to how things are unfolding in your life, patterns and ‘coincidences’ can entirely alter perception for the better. We’re all so busy and it’s easy to play down chance encounters or even take for granted what’s happening all around us. In rushing about, and/or dismissing things you have probably created or attracted (read the book!) as ‘mere chance’, it’s easy to miss the extraordinary things (both large and small) that are in fact showing up. I’m proposing therefore, a mindful in March movement. Perhaps you could write down your experiences too. ‘Signs’ might emerge as surprising patterns; ideas could manifest in your waking reality, and ‘coincidently’ you may even notice things begin to flow more freely. Spooky or not, aren’t you curious to find out what could happen (or even better, positively shift) in your life if you were to consciously pay more attention, starting now? I don’t need to be a mind reader to work out the answer is likely to be yes. In any case, why not try it for a month – find us on social and let us know how you go – #mindfulinmarch. PS If you’re interested in this topic, keep an eye out for Hay House Basics new release, Mindfulness: How To Live Well By Paying Attention, by Ed Halliwell (available on amazon.com), or simply head to YouTube and absorb a few lessons by contemporary teachers, including one of my favourite motivational speakers and writers, New Yorker Gabrielle Bernstein or Marie Forleo.
