From the publisher e are judgemental, let’s admit it. As women, we try to be compassionate, understanding and forgiving, smiling sweetly and letting others live life on their terms. However, in reality, we sometimes judge them.

Gold Coast Winter Golf Pass

I’m the first to admit that I tend to judge and criticise prior to knowing all the facts. It’s not a trait that I’m proud of, although, it has saved me from some really bad dates at certain times. Every one of us has been through or experienced a change in our lives and seen the lives of those around us changing. Whether it be an unsuccessful relationship with a partner, a family member or friend doing something we don’t think they should be doing or our children taking a path we never thought they would — one we didn’t necessarily want for them.

Warm your golfing heart this winter with the ultimate golf deal. For one great price, you will play the pick of the Gold Coast’s golf courses.

How do we react? Do we choose to step up and try to change the situation or do we just ignore it so that it becomes someone else’s problem? Perhaps judging silently, or not so silently, from the sideline. I’m sure most of us had a well-laid plan as to how our lives were going to pan out. But I’m betting for most of us that life didn’t go as planned. Curveballs can come at us at any time and we do what we think is best. How we deal with them doesn’t always end in the best results, but we did what we thought was best, right? What I’m saying here is that none of us are perfect. You’re not perfect (even if you think you are) and the people in your lives who are making decisions that you don’t fully support aren’t either. I suggest that we learn to let others be ‘perfect’ in their eyes, and that we celebrate with them for who they are. Or, at the very least, cheer them on rather than judge from the sideline. With wine in hand of course!

CE N A ! R LEA ON C TER NOW N I W LE SA

ecently I have started to notice that I am exhibiting some worrying behaviours I think might be symptomatic of a much greater, more serious issue. Allow me to paint you a depressing picture of my life. I had a day off work the other day. Imagine, a full day to myself, what a splendid and rare occasion. What was I to do? Watch Netflix? Have a bath? Drink? Maybe even socialise? The possibilities were endless, such is the nature of the wonderful world we live in. So, what did I actually do? I looked at the bountiful opportunities gifted to us all by mother nature and the guys who invented Netflix and said, ‘Yeah nah, I’m going to clean a shower’. Look, when I say I spent an entire day cleaning a shower, I mean it. I went to the shops and bought all the high-tech cleaning products I could find, including a foaming spray which, to be honest, did rock my world. I spent hours looking at YouTube videos of people cleaning showers, studying their ways, learning their truths.

Open: Mon – Sat 9am -5pm, Sun 10am – 4pm Ashmore Factory Outlets, 12 Central Park Avenue, Ashmore P 5597 7799

I called my housemate with proud delight to tell her I had discovered that we had ‘hard water’, which was causing pesky limescale build up. Yes, don’t worry my friend, I solved the mystery on everyone’s lips. I then spent two hours cleaning the shower from head to toe, polishing the glass, scrubbing the grout, organising the shampoo. Judge all you want, but I am still genuinely excited about this.

The Ultimate Beauty House

At this point you are probably thinking, ‘Why are you telling me this? We all already know your life is kind of lame, we get it.’ And you are right, I have always been pretty lame, but this is something new.

NOW OPEN IN SOUTHPORT

The Lipstick and Beauty specialists

There’s no easy way of saying it, but I think I am becoming my mother (sorry Mum). If you don’t believe me, please rest assured that the shower-day was not an isolated incident. I now repeatedly display these behaviours. Just the other day, I bought a steam mop and made my friends watch as I cleaned with the power of steam. They were unenthused, but I still get giddy thinking about that mop.

JULY SPECIAL with every facial

FREE BROW SHAPE, WAX AND TINT

There's nothing wrong with becoming your mum. In fact, my mum is definitely cooler than me, so, if anything, this is an upgrade. Plus, my shower looks pretty damn good.

(valued at $45)

But I think the most disturbing thing is that I haven’t made the full transition yet. I am still my lame-old-self, but with a new-found passion for cleaning. Which is, quite possibly, the lamest habit that anyone in their mid-20s has ever picked up (sorry again, Mum).

"Call me ma'am, not sir" Summer Day and Get it’s Kirstin Cuthbert sit down in her Varsity Lakes home for an honest, raw and revealing conversation about how Summer went from a suicidal and depressed ‘man’ to the amazing woman she is today — gracing our front cover!

ummer Jane Day, 37, is a post-op transgender woman and she doesn’t try to hide it. She was born with a boy’s body but a girl’s brain. As Michael John Day, she achieved many great things — becoming a professional skateboarder, getting married and having kids — but deep down she knew she wasn’t being true to herself, and it almost killed her. Four years ago, she made the decision to transition from her male body to a female body, so she could live life as the woman she always shew she was. Depression, heartbreak, fear, freedom, acceptance… she has experienced it all… and she leaves nothing out as she shares her journey from Michael to Summer with us. GROWING UP Let’s go back to the very beginning; can you start off by telling us what life was like as a child?

I had a good life, good parents and a good home but when I was in between five and seven, I really started to understand the whole concept of what a boy was and what a girl was. My mind was always dragging towards female things, but I looked in the mirror and I saw a boy. It was confusing. What was school life like? In primary school, all I wanted to do was hang around with the girls and play elastics, so I was constantly bullied for it. I knew going into high school that I had to create a persona to avoid being bullied. I became very good at imitating men and joined the surfer/skater group. No one knew about my gender issues and I used drugs to stick them to the back of my head. There was a point where I started wanting to hurt myself then a friend of mine introduced me to progressive skating. I started on that and realised you can’t skate without getting hurt, so for me, the pain side of skating was therapeutic. When I was 18 I ended up picking up a sponsorship and skated competitively, 24/7, so that was brilliant. LEARNING ABOUT GENDER IDENTITY Was there a moment you realised why you felt the way you did? When I was 22 I got the internet and I started Googling the things I had been feeling. I came across YouTube videos of people who had transitioned

13

from male to female or female to male and it was a lightbulb moment. I knew I wasn’t gay. Orientation-wise, I have always been bisexual. Even when I was with men, in my mind, I saw myself as a woman, so I only felt I was gay when I was with women. As soon as I saw transition videos and realised it was a thing, everything made sense. What did you do from there? I was in my early 20s and consumed by fear. I was three quarters of the way through a man’s puberty and I was a giant at 6’1”. At that age you are bombarded by what’s ‘normal’ and what’s ‘not normal.’ I felt there was nothing I could do about it, I was stuck that way forever. MARRIAGE AND KIDS How did the next few years progress? I supressed my gender issues even deeper. I met my wife Atsuko, my now ex-wife, and fell in love. When I turned 30 we decided to have children and I made the decision to stop using drugs. Unbeknownst to me, that set off an atomic bomb in my head. A year later, at 31, we had our eldest, Milla, and my whole role in life was dad. Things festered so bad for me that when she was one and a half I tried to take my own life.

all my thoughts onto. I had three or four sessions with him and then he gave me the letter for hormone therapy. And that was the beginning of my amazing, scary social change. How long has it been since then and what has happened in that time? It will be four years this August. I was on hormone therapy for two years. The estrogen pretty much melts muscle and redistributes it as fat to the bum, hips and boobs. I got a B cup through it but knew I would need breast surgery to even me out. I got that in May 2016, then a year later in 2017, I had my gender reassignment surgery. Tell us about that surgery, what was it like? Did you have any concerns? No concerns whatsoever! I absolutely loved every second of it! I knew once I came out that I would get the surgery, as I had to erase every possible marker of maleness on my body. There are two types of surgeries. There’s one where they take a snippet of the colon to use as the vagina and the colon selflubricates and the other you can’t selflubricate — I chose that option because

"He [Michael] was my taxi driver and Summer was in the backseat just waiting to get out — and she sure did!"

Did that encourage you to take any action? No, even after a suicide attempt, I couldn’t speak about it. I bottled it all back in there. A couple of years went by and our youngest, Zara, was on her way. I got to the lowest point of my life and tried again. Luckily for me, in those last few seconds I got visions of my daughters in the future without me as a parent and that stopped me. I also had a memory of my friend Zane who took his life 12 years ago and I couldn’t bear to leave my family with unanswered questions. Afterwards, I found myself back at home in the same situation but this time I knew I had to do something about it.

you can’t turn the self-lubrication off like when a woman gets excited! Lube is my best friend now! What was the recovery like? I had my surgery done in Thailand and there were two stages. I had my first surgery then four or five days later I had my second surgery. After my second surgery, I wasn’t allowed to move for three days, so that was a bit of a nightmare, but I knew afterwards that I would get to see the big reveal.

COMING OUT So, what did you do about it? I told my mum first. I knew my mum would have my back no matter what. She actually thought I was gay. You could see her flick back in the years, looking for markers that she hadn’t noticed. She rattled off a few like wondering why her makeup was always broken and disappearing or why her clothes were in different drawers. She was so happy that I’d finally come to that point in my life and wanted to deal with it. And when did you tell your wife? I told her a few days later, in a long, tearful conversation. She took it well, but she had no idea what it really entailed. She comforted me, and did all the supportive things, but I knew once she was by herself she would start to go through the emotions. It’s like a death, that physical person is going to disappear. I’m still here, I’m still the same soul and mind, but physically that person is disappearing. For her, being with me for 12 or 13 years, that’s big. Every woman pictures their future, the typical white picket fence, family and kids — she definitely did not factor in that her husband at the time would transition into a woman.

And, how did she look? It looked scary as down there! It was so bruised and swollen — it didn’t really look like a vagina. But, the more time that passed, and the more the swelling went down, it was like oh yeah, there’s my flower! All vaginas are different, let’s face it, so it falls in the spectrum, just like it’s a genetic woman’s vagina. I have all the bits and pieces you girls have! Were there any things you had to do after surgery, upkeep so to speak?

BECOMING SUMMER

Yes, I just got stuck into my dilating regime straight out of hospital which was three times a day with six different sized dilators. Because it’s not a natural vagina, the body at that stage is going to try and close the operation site. Dilating took up an hour and a half, three times a day. It filters down to where I am at now, I pretty much do it once every three or four days.

What was the first step in your journey?

Do you need to keep doing that for the rest of your life?

To find a gender therapist. I didn’t need to be told by a therapist that I was transgender, I already knew, but I needed someone to offload

I guess so. I only use two sizes now but hey, if I get a boyfriend, I won’t have to!

DATING AND LOVE LIFE

NEGATIVITY AND DISCRIMINATION

So, speaking of boyfriends, are you single and if so, are you looking?

Have you copped much negativity through your transition?

I am looking for a partner but it’s so hard. As a trans person, our pool of fish is so much smaller than the general population. Then you have men who want to fill their fetishes or their sexual desires with trans women and sorry but no, I’m not going to be your experiment. I am bisexual, but I would prefer a man. The more I’ve transitioned, the more I want to feel that sense of security and protectiveness that a man typically provides. How do you find online dating now? My profiles online are black and white. I’m a post-op trans woman. And then I get questions like,“Do you still have a penis?” And it’s like come on, it says post-op trans woman, if you don’t understand that statement within itself, Google it! Here’s a big question, have you had sex since your surgery? I have been getting out there! You only live once and, as they say, use it or lose it. Having sex for the first time as a physical woman was so scary, it was like I was 16 and a virgin again. I knew what to do but actually doing it was so different. It was good, well good and bad. Let’s face it, men only last a few minutes if you’re lucky, so I was like,“Oh is that it?”

I’ve had my fair share. The highest percentage of negativity is staring. I started smiling back at peopled who stared. What better way to deflect that negative energy than with a big smile? I’ve promised myself that I won’t walk away from any situation upset with myself. I have nothing to be upset about — I’m amazing! Pronouns have proven interesting. I hardly get ‘sir’ anymore, I’m pretty much getting ma'am and miss. Everyone has eyes, so call me ma'am, not sir! What else have you encountered? We found a kindy for Milla and did the orientation. Prior to that I explained to them I am transitioning, and they were cool with it. Once we finished the orientation and came home, I got a phone call from the kindy saying that the teachers were concerned how I was

"Gender is who you go to bed as and sexual orientation is who you go to bed with!"

And another big question, can you orgasm?

dressing. I had a knee-length skirt and a nice pleated top and wedges on. They thought I was a cross dresser and that’s not who I am.

That first time there was no orgasm for me and even trailing three weeks after that, I couldn’t figure it out. There is a percentage of people that have no proper feeling down there. After some concentrating and hard work, I found my orgasm, so I was super excited!

I met with the head of the kindy and they were just as clueless. I decided to take them to the antidiscrimination board and I ended up winning. I wasn’t there for money so instead of seeking a financial payout, the entire company of about 200 people were required to attend a three-day course with my therapist who runs programs for companies regarding transitions.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS How is your relationship with your ex-wife, Atskuo, now? She’s my soulmate, we still live together, and we have an amazing friendship, but we’re not together as partners. She’s straight so I knew once I started transitioning that somewhere along the line we wouldn’t be together as a romantic couple. I do feel bad in a way that I stripped her of the physical partner, but I’ve got her back for the rest of my life, we have two beautiful kids together and I’d do anything for her. We still love each other.

MISCONCEPTIONS AND THE FUTURE What’s the biggest misconception you come across?

At what stage did you tell your friends? After I told my mum, Atsuko, and did all the therapy sessions. I had just started taking hormones but was still in boy mode. I decided to write a long letter as I realised I couldn’t sit there and do it to their face without balling my eyes out. When I started to tell my friends and I handed them the note, they thought I had cancer or something and I was dying. It was like,‘No I’m not dying, I’m still here, I’m just going to be more amazing in the next few years!’ How old are your daughters and do they understand your journey to a degree? They are six and nearly four. In the beginning when we had Milla, I didn’t want to take that tag of Mum away from Atsuko as she was a brandnew mum, so Milla called me Summer. As I progressed in my transition, I wanted a title because Milla was getting asked at school who Summer was. So, I became Mumsy. Zara, my youngest, has only known Mumsy. Milla was two and a half when I came out. It was just nothing for her to grasp that I’m going to start changing and that she now has two mums. Zara in time will start to understand. I don’t hide pictures as I don’t want to erase that part. 15

A lot of people think it’s a choice. Why would anyone want to go from floating through society unnoticed as whatever gender they are to making a massive physical change where everyone notices? Another one is that people who transition from male to female are gay men which is not true. Your gender and sexual orientation are two different areas of the brain. The way I say it is gender is who you go to bed as and sexual orientation is who you go to bed with! Looking back on your journey, is there one last thing you would like to say? You can’t live your life not being you. That moment you acknowledge what is going on within you and you make the change to better yourself, it will be the best thing you ever do. And that person I was, as hard as it was growing up, got me from the beginning to when I started my transition. He got me there in one piece. I use the reference that he was my taxi driver and Summer was in the backseat just waiting to get out — and she sure did! July 2018

GET IT I WORK LIFE PROFILE

WORK LIFE

I believe in saying yes to opportunity, developing good relationships and working hard.

Inside the life of stylist and event director Laura Churchill

ashion showcases, parades and festivals, it’s all in a day’s work for Laura Churchill. Through her styling and event management company, Churchill Creative, she runs events for Marina Mirage, the Ekka Natural Fibres Fashion Parades, Brisbane Fashion Month and more. The wife and mother of a two-year-old daughter shares the glamorous and not-so glamorous parts of her job. MY ALARM GOES OFF AT… Since having a baby I don’t have need for an alarm anymore! But the upside is my day always starts with a cuddle from my daughter and it’s all go from there — getting us all ready and out of the house to go about our day. HOW MY DAY GOES… Too quickly! My typical work day can be in my office from start to finish working on sponsorship proposals, event plans and staff rosters to client meetings and product sourcing or even being on site bumping in for events and staging fashion parades with my team. HOW I GOT THE GIG… My path was a roundabout one. I’ve always had an interest in fashion but mainly from a fashion business perspective. I’m fascinated by creative people and how they make a career from what they love. I’ve been lucky enough to do this myself and am honoured every day to be surrounded by other creatives and other business owners — we’re all working toward a common goal of creating beautiful experiences and inspirational moments. I studied journalism and worked in newspapers for 10 years, finishing up as fashion editor of The Courier-Mail before going out on my own eight years ago and moving into styling. My styling work has developed from personal styling and occasional event work into almost exclusively

working on events and now running my own fashion festival. I never would have imagined that for myself 10 years ago, but I believe in saying yes to opportunity, developing good relationships and working hard. THE BEST PART… Working with talented designers and inspiring business people. I’m privileged to work on the largest fashion events in Queensland and, although it involves hard work and long hours, I’m so inspired by everyone including the designers, my staff, volunteers, students and marketing teams. SOMETHING SURPRISING… Working in fashion is not all champagne and air kisses! Not a lot of people would be aware just how much work is involved with putting together a fashion event. The recent Marina Mirage Winter Showcase for example involved week-long preparation by my team and over 100 hours combined effort to stage a halfhour fashion parade. There’s a lot of planning involved to make it look seamless on the day. THE WORST PART… I really can’t complain about my job, but perhaps the worst part is there are always so many things I want and need to do, and only so many hours in the day. Book keeping and

business admin are also not my strong point — that would be the worst part. MEMORABLE MOMENTS… Sitting down with Miranda Kerr on a shoot with David Jones and chatting about Orlando Bloom after they were just married. Watching the first Monique Lhullier gown come out on the runway at one of the first shows I saw at New York Fashion Week. More recently, just seeing all my months of hard work come together in events that have my creative touches threaded through every detail. AFTER WORK… Outside of work, my life revolves around family these days but I do find that my work and home life overlap quite a lot. I have my office and studio on the ground level of my home so there’s really no escape. I have to make a point to get out of the house or go away with my family for the weekend to feel truly disconnected from work. HOW I FIND BALANCE… I am a big list maker. I don’t know what I’d do without lists. I do prioritise health and wellbeing too and always make sure I drink enough water, get enough sleep and spend time outdoors whenever I can to get some perspective and recharge.

Plan B: I was a journalist for ten years and still do some writing, I will likely always keep a hand in that. I’m also handy with graphic design, so between it all I can see my business moving in any number of directions over the next few years. I’d be very surprised though if I ended up back in a 9-5 job. things to keep in mind when asking for a

pay rise

How to approach that tricky but necessary subject with Michelle Gibbing, career expert and Founder of Change Meridian

1 2

3 4

sking for a pay rise is something most people dread. However, when you shy away from negotiating, you are walking away from lots of potential upsides: increased pay, more flexible working hours and other employment benefits. Knowing how to ask for what you want is a critical skill, particularly when you consider the pay disparity between men and women. With a bit of planning and strategising, approaching your boss for a pay rise doesn’t need to be hard. Here’s eight tips to get you started. Don’t ask — don’t get: Often in life we hold back asking for what we want or expressing our needs as we worry about what the other person’s reaction will be. When you think about it, what’s the worst thing that could happen if you ask for a pay rise? They say no. So, don’t let fear hold you back. Pick your timing: Most organisations have performance and pay review cycles, and it helps to know how that process works. Ideally, you want to ask before budgets for the new financial year are locked in. Secondly, pick a time when your boss is more likely to be receptive to the conversation; rather than tired, stressed or distracted. As well, pick a time that works for you. Negotiating is mentally taxing, and your mind will be pushed and pulled in many directions. Consequently, it’s best to not go into the discussion when you are tired or stressed, as you will be less equipped to manage it. Build your case: Be clear on the value you bring to your role and how you demonstrate it. This is important evidence and data you can use to explain why you deserve a pay rise. You also need to know the going rates in the industry, so, you can understand whether your pay request is above or in line with the market. Know their needs: Seek to understand the other people involved — their operating style, agenda, needs and what they care about. The more you understand those involved, the greater insights you’ll have into what they are likely to support or reject. When you make the request, state your wants objectively and in way that

July 2018

5 6

will resonate with your boss (or whoever you are negotiating with). You also need to explain how this will benefit the organisation. Know your trade-offs: Be prepared to consider the options available. To do this, you need to know what matters the most to you, and what you may be willing to give up as part of the negotiation process. For example, you may be willing to trade time for money, or money for more holidays. Get on the front foot: Research shows that we don’t like people who initiate negotiations for higher pay — regardless of gender, but it’s only women who suffer a penalty. People are less inclined to want to work with a female who asks for a pay rise — either as a co-worker, subordinate, or boss. One way to address it is get on the front foot. Walk into the negotiation and say:

18

7 8

I just want to say up front that I’m going to negotiate for this pay rise, and the research shows that because I do this you’re going to like me less when I do. Let that sink in for a minute and then move into the negotiation. Think about the next steps: Think about how the negotiation process may unfold, and the steps required to secure agreement. Consider each of these steps, in advance of the discussion, and be curious as to how they may play out. Running through possible scenarios and outcomes will enable you to better respond as issues or objections are raised during the discussion. Slow down: If you find your mind racing during the negotiation, focus on breathing, and breathing deeply. This provides time for your nerves to relax and your heart rate to slow down, making it easier to reflect and respond calmly.

The morning after t’s your fifth date. By this stage, you’ve survived the obligatory first date, complete with clumsy banter and excessive laughter at his awkward jokes and sat through the corny romantic comedy that he was sure would show off his sensitive side. You’ve even played putt putt golf. In heels.Yep, you really like him. He is effortlessly charming and painfully handsome after all. At the end of the last date, he gave you a delicious kiss that was sweet but lingered just long enough to keep you wanting more. And tonight is the night. You’re going to scale him like a tree. It’s going DOWN. You’ve got the moves down pat and you’ve mastered those loose messy curls that look even better once a man has run his hands through them. But what about your makeup? Take these quick tips and rock the morning after look as fiercely as you rocked his bed! Before As any good Girl Scout knows, the key to success is to always be prepared and girl, this is no exception. Now is the time to lay the foundation (pun intended) to your morning after success. Keep your eye makeup simple; a classic winged liner is usually a good option. Intricate eye shadow will just end up all over your cheeks and the pillowcase. Messy. Also, stick to a nude lipstick shade. It will look more subtle smudged all over your face — and his — than a deep crimson red.Trust me… During Dinner is finished, your martini glass is empty and the bill is settled (he paid of course, what a gentleman!). Excuse yourself and steal away to the little ladies room to ‘powder your nose’.This is your final check point so ensure that everything is as it should be, reapply your lippy and mentally high-five yourself. Or actually high-five yourself. You go girl! The morning after This is the moment that all your preparation pays off. Manoeuvre out of his arms like a stealth operative, roll over and reach for your mirror to assess the damage. It’s likely that what stares back at you is more panda-chic than playful-vixen. But never fear, because last night’s winged-liner is this morning’s smoky eye. Grab a tissue, the corner of the sheet or even his t-shirt from the bedroom floor and clean up the excessive smudge. Apply a light coating of your lipstick and roll back over, assume a graceful sleeping position and prepare to flutter open those luscious lashes. Girl, you woke up like this. So, ladies, embrace your morning after glow because you earned it. And when you finally slip out of his front door in his borrowed hoodie, high heels on and clutch in hand, don’t slink into your Uber with shame. Hold your head high, strut your stuff and rock that walk of shame. Or should I say, stride of pride!

Hit the hairdressers for regular maintenance, use topperforming products, take time when styling your hair, and then reach for your accessory of choice — a delicate pin, a velvet ribbon, or even a gilded barrette. “A fresh and fearless look for any occasion starts at the base, with a considered cut, flawless colour work and consistent upkeep. From here you can work wonders with what you’ve got, let your locks speak for themselves and subtly enhance your outfit with a chic yet simple accessory.”

GET IT I BEAUTY ROAD TEST

Gloss it up

Get it’s Leanne and Kirstin's 'accidental' road test his month’s road test was accidental. It all started when Leanne and Kirstin decided to do the Brisbane Muddy Rumble, a 7-8km obstacle course that included inflatables, waterslides and yep, you guessed it, mud! A feat such as this cannot be attempted without costumes on (duh!) so we sought outfits that would be fun but also not inhibit our ability on the obstacles (we were serious!). We settled on hot pink bow ties and suspenders.

Our look needed a Get it touch, and what’s more Get it than hot pink lippie!? So we both applied NYX’s Lip Lustre Glossy Lip Tint in Retro Socialite - Deep Fuchsia colour. This gloss is a ‘revolutionary formula that glides on a gloss and adjusts to a gorgeous tint that lasts.’ Let’s put it to the test! We drove off to Sirromet Winery at 10am to run around in the mud rather than actually drink wine,

we know, call us crazy! We got on the course at about 11am and finished 2pm. There were lines for some obstacles so that’s why it took a fair bit of time. In those 4 hours we jumped/climbed over ropes, walls and inflatables, did so much running, got covered in coloured powder, partook very seriously in a slip n’ slide battle and literally rolled around in mud. Plus, more! We were filthy and looked like actual mud monsters by the end of it! To our surprise, the pink lip gloss stayed on through all of that! The gloss was only began to smudge/come off as we scoffed down wraps at McDonalds on our way home in desperate hunger. But we won’t hold that against the gloss’ long-lasting abilities!

old Coast Fashion Week (GCFW), 26-29 July, is back and set for a huge shake-up thanks to two Gold Coast women. New GCFW director Angela Rose identified the talent of coastal-based designers when she featured her label Platinum Plus in Brisbane Fashion Week last year. “It was so clear to me that the Gold Coast fashion industry is thriving with innovative designers, as well as high-profile influencers and industry entrepreneurs,” says Angela. “They all had to travel out of their region for some exposure and publicity, so I knew there was demand.” Angela attributes the boom in the local industry's growth to highly engaged millennials sharing and exposing their favourite new designers, as well as the capacity for small online fashion labels to achieve rapid business growth through social media channels. And these Gold Coasters want to stay local and enjoy the beautiful lifestyle. se Angela partnered with industry leader, designer and Ro entrepreneur Bethany Turner of Fashion Mogul Agency and Rare Muse label to form Gold Coast Fashion Events (GCFE) and revive Gold Coast Fashion Week following its last showcase in 2013. "People think the Gold Coast is only about swimwear and summer dresses, but we have such an impressive profile of homegrown talent who hold their own on the runways around the country,” she says. “We intend to showcase Gold Coast along with Australian urn er and international designer royalty." GCFE has partnered with some of the country's greatest thought leaders in technology, digital media and fashion trends to offer an experience that will introduce several ‘firsts’ for Australian Fashion Week festivals. Take the first step he development of each child is a journey — a unique path that begins with one step,” believes Brian Grimes, A.B. Paterson College Principal. “Great schools are an important part of such a journey; a place of wonderful engagement, full of opportunities to try new things, places in which we can explore who we are, and to genuinely grow as individuals. They help us to shape our identity, develop our character and explore what it means to be part of a community.” At A.B. Paterson College, our students journey through our Phases of Learning, designed to ignite their curiosity, inspire learning, develop their identity, independence and responsibility, accept challenge and explore their world, and lead them on a path of self-discovery to prepare them for what lies ahead. This journey begins for our Prep to Year 3 children with an abundance of fun, friendship and learning with creativity. “I’m clever; I’m busy; I’m helpful.” Developing our children’s sense of wonderment and sparking natural curiosity in their world makes for a vibrant and inspiring learning environment. Our teachers care about your child as if they were their own, part of a safe, happy and nurturing family. Excited by everything they see and do, their enthusiasm is infectious. We understand that setting the foundations for developing positive relationships and harnessing their natural curiosity makes for a thriving learning environment. In Years 4 to 6, students begin to gain more independence; friendships and their learning are an important part of their growing world. “I’m valued; I’m known; I’m challenged.” Supporting our children’s growing identity through choice and opportunity

promotes a blossoming sense of independence and responsibility. Our teachers recognise that your child has a growing sense of maturity and identity, supporting them to step up with more choice and challenge. Encouraged to think, to feel, and to apply their learning to the world, they aim for the sky. We understand that this is a time for developing greater responsibility, independence and leadership in a collaborative learning environment. Ahead there are big changes for our students in Years 7 to 9 as they enter the world of Senior School, a safe haven where they can experiment, explore, succeed, attempt and learn. “I’m learning to be me; I’m part of a family; I’m ready to try new things”. This stage of the journey is all about encouraging our students to strive to be their best, where they can flourish in a supportive but challenging environment. Our teachers know that your child is ready to explore their sense of self within a supportive and caring family environment. Challenged to take the leap into the

unknown, they are not afraid to give anything a go, knowing that we are there to catch them should they fall. We understand that this is a time of great physical and emotional change, a time when we can work together as partners to provide a caring environment in which your child can safely grow and develop. Finally, the destination years offer a safe path of discovery as Years 10 to 12 progress towards journey’s end — graduation and the next big step in life’s journey. “I’m a leader; I’m an adventurer; I’m ready for what lies ahead.” We look to shape our young people’s capacity to succeed as confident, capable and contributing citizens, along whichever path they choose to travel in the world beyond. GET IT I REAL TALK

It is never fault

her

Get it’s Hayley Bogaard confronts the toxic convention of victim blaming that sadly still infiltrates our everyday conversations et’s be clear on one thing ladies, victim blaming is dangerous, prejudicial and conceived of ignorance. But if you think you’re exempt from this destructive behaviour, it’s time to consider your everyday conversations a little more closely. Because it is never her fault. It happened just last month Can you imagine if, following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre, authorities had declared that people should avoid tall office buildings? Can you imagine if, following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the police declared that all primary school children should be home schooled? Can you imagine that? Now imagine that a woman is raped and murdered by a complete stranger while walking home from work. Imagine that the authorities respond by reminding women to,“Be aware of their own personal security and just be mindful of their surroundings.” Hard to imagine? Not at all. It happened just last month in Melbourne. If 22-year-old comedian Eurydice Dixon, who was found raped and murdered in a Melbourne park, had simply been more ‘mindful’, she may be alive today. It’s almost like it could have been her own fault. But it is not. It is never her fault. It takes two to tango Years ago, I was in a toxic relationship that ultimately led to domestic violence. It left me with wounds that ran far below the July 2018

surface. I was terrified, broken and vulnerable. I left the relationship and turned to those that I trusted for support. One of those women reacted in a way that broke the remaining parts of me. In one sentence, five words, she hurt me deeper than he ever did. “It takes two to tango.” Five words to tell me that I should accept some of the blame for being assaulted. That I willingly participated so I must take responsibility for my contribution to the situation. That it was, at least in part, my fault. Well, trusted confidant, let me get one thing crystal clear: it was not my fault. It is never her fault. The omnipresent white noise Recently, while sitting at a Sunday afternoon BBQ, the discussion turned to the Harvey Weinstein scandal and it’s victims. The reactions were disgust, sadness and surprisingly, in some cases, apprehension. Until one female friend posed a simple, unassuming question:“So what do you do every day so that you don’t become a victim?” The men responded with blank faces. They couldn’t comprehend what they should even be frightened of. The women began counting the ways on one hand. In some cases, two. “I sit in the back of Ubers” “I cover my drinks at bars.” “I sit with other women on the tram.” “I hold my keys between my fingers like Wolverine when walking through car parks.” 34

“I walk the long way home because it’s better lit.” “I don’t wear skirts or dresses at night.” And the men were shocked. The women shrugged in silent conformity. Without even realising it, we had accepted the threat of sexual assault and rape as an omnipresent white noise in our life. And all of those preventative measures had become habitual, like brushing our teeth or taking a shower in the morning. Because, in our society, we’re told that rape is caused by short skirts, pretty faces and late-night walks home. You could be mistaken for believing that rape is her fault. But let’s be sure of one thing. It is never her fault. Two Carol Brady’s The prevalence of victim-blaming is perhaps most evident in the conversations surrounding sexual assault, rape and domestic violence against women. It’s splashed across our newspapers, infiltrating our Facebook feeds and streaming on our TV screens. But it reaches far deeper than that. It’s seeped into our everyday conversations from coffee with the girls to office debates around the water cooler — and we don’t even realise it. It’s toxic. Sitting in my favourite café recently, sipping my large caramel long black with an extra shot, I recognised women who were mutual friends of a girlfriend of mine. They were at the table beside me but their charming intelligence, witty banter and articulate discussion caught my ear. Their conversation turned to a close female friend of ours who had recently moved in with her partner, another woman. Both women had young children who now lived together under the one roof — The Brady Bunch but with two Carol Brady’s. Rather than celebrate this woman’s happiness and success, they turned their attention to her children. “It’s just awful to do that to the children, it’s incredibly selfish.” “The poor children will be picked on at school — imagine them having to explain why they have two mums?!” “The kids are the ones who will suffer, I just feel so sorry for them.” I found myself caught in disbelief. It wasn’t the cruel taunts of the children at school that were under scrutiny. It wasn’t the bullies themselves who would bring ridicule and embarrassment that were to blame. It wasn’t even society itself that festered a lack of acceptance for anything outside the status quo. It was the two loving, caring mothers who wanted to provide a stable, safe home for all their children that were to blame. Well, I’m sorry, but I didn’t feel sorry for the children in the slightest. I feel sorry for those children whose father’s beat and molest them. I feel sorry for those children who do not have a roof over their heads and food on the table. I feel sorry for those children who don’t have a mother or a father. And I felt sorry for the women sitting at the table across from me who, as a by-product of their own ignorance, believed that the fault lay with a caring, loving mother. It is never her fault.

Because, in our society, we’re told that rape is caused by short skirts, pretty faces and latenight walks home. You could be mistaken for believing that rape is her fault.

MAN SPEAK

with Ash Palmero from Rebel FM 99.4

Gold Coast glitz and Father, husband and all round top bloke glamour Ash Palmero shares his two cents

eauty and glamour, the Gold Coast is full of it. Polo by the Sea, Magic Millions, the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Bruce Lynton Charity Ball and the list goes on. Yet, here’s the thing, for us men, we throw a suit on and we’re good to go, but for you ladies, it’s not so simple. The dress, the hair, the make-up, the shoes, the accessories and the list goes on! If any one part of that list is missed, the evening can be a total disaster before it starts. Am I right? The quest to find beauty for ladies is such a challenge! We continue to hear,“Beauty comes from within,” so why is it so hard to make you feel that way? There are so many choices you ladies have. With countless dresses on the rack, the hunt for that perfect dress is paramount. Same as the perfect shoes, which you can never have enough of! And for others, all that time and money goes into the hairstyle and makeup. At some point along the way, you decide that you have found all of the right elements. All that’s left to do is walk into the room and put your game face on, because it’s time to impress. Have you done enough? No matter how fantastic someone looks, it’s not worth a pinch if they are not a nice person. If you speak to someone and they are totally disinterested in what you have to say, well frankly, they are an ugly person, no matter how good they may look. I heard a saying once,“Money can’t buy class” and that is so true. There are so many events and functions here on the GC where beauty and glamour are on show, yet it’s all for nothing if you can’t be a beautiful person on the inside. If you have spent a bucketload of money trying to be glamourous but your social skills are less than that of decent human, then, at a guess, you have wasted a lot of money. A person at an event who is interesting to speak with, and is interested in what you have to say, well, that is the beauty I like to be around. Not the one who has had too many bubbles and has truly let herself go. There is one truly unique event here in Australia that sums this all up, Melbourne Cup Day, you can bet on that. 35

GET IT I SOCIAL MEDIA

biggest branding mistakes made on

social media

With Debbie O'Connor, an internationally award-winning brand strategist, keynote speaker, mentor as well as Founder and Creative Director of branding studio WRD, and CEO of The Creative Fringe

people join social media every day, and it’s clear that it is here to stay. For most businesses, it’s the cheapest way of getting your product or service in front of the masses for a small investment (your time). Unfortunately, though, significant damage can be done to your brand if you don’t have a planned approach to social media. The saying ‘something is better than nothing’ doesn’t apply when trying to build a brand that customers will fall in love with. Mistake #1: No plan To avoid brand damage on social media, you need to decide: l The platforms you should be on (and the answer is never ‘all of them’) l What you want your social media to say about your business l Your goal — is it brand recognition? Sales? Or perhaps engagement? Once that’s clear, write a plan that outlines what you’re going to post, how often, and by whom, as well as visual concepts for what it should look like. Mistake #2: The wrong brand culture What are you actually posting on social media? Are you constantly in sales mode? Are you sharing inappropriate images or videos of your staff hitting the town (and perhaps the pavement) on a big night out? And do July 2018

you have a strategy in place for managing comments or negativity? Look at the brands you love to follow. Watch how they engage their customers. Having a good balance between sharing expertise, highlighting clients, showcasing your products or work, and introducing your team will educate, engage and entertain your followers. Importantly, it will create a brand culture that’s far more memorable. After all, your culture helps mould your reputation. What kind of reputation do you want for your brand? Mistake #3: No brand voice Whether you realise it or not, how you write and talk creates a particular brand voice for your business. Are you fun, playful and hip? Perhaps you’re intelligent, witty or intellectual? Your social media posts should reflect the tone and language you’d like your brand to have. Create a list of words or guidelines that staff can refer to that will ensure the brand voice is consistent across your platforms. Mistake #4: No brand experience Creating a brand experience is essential in the cluttered world of social overwhelm. Why do you think cat and dog videos are so popular? It’s because they allow us a moment to relax, be entertained and have a chuckle. They provide a viewer experience. Include an opportunity to create a brand experience for your fans in your plan — something that they will remember or, even 36

better, pass onto their friends. For us at WRD, we like to do Logo Votes. We encourage our followers to vote on the best of three logos that we’ve developed for a client. Everyone likes to be asked their opinion, so we receive plenty of comments, suggestions and even critiques, but it’s worthwhile as people not only remember that we design logos, but they’ve also been engaged in the process. Mistake #5: Inconsistency Inconsistency refers to everything about your brand across all social media platforms. Your colours, fonts, style of images, brand voice, use of video, music, live streaming, hash tags… the list goes on. Are these consistent across the different platforms that you use? Is the message that you send on Instagram consistent with the message on Facebook or Twitter? This isn’t just about what you post, it’s about the styling of your social media, too. And most of all, is the transition from one platform to another a seamless brand experience? Without realising it, too many businesses unwittingly damage their brand by not being strategic with their social media. Yes, social media is social by nature and very much about engagement. But it’s also a digital representation of your business, and needs to be managed in the same manner as you would manage any other facet of your marketing. Is your social media building a brand that customers are falling in love with?

Simona De Silvestro, 29, talks what it’s like to race — and beat — boys for a living

Why did you move to the Gold Coast? The weather is much better for training and, being from Europe, I have the chance to live close to the water/surf. How did you get into race car driving? My dad had a car dealership in Switzerland. He liked watching racing on TV so I kind of got the racing bug from him. He bought me my first go kart at age six. What do you love about the sport? I like speed, but the biggest thing is that it really pushes the racer to the limit. What goes through your head while you are on the track racing? How do I get faster? How does it feel to be a female race car driver? Not really different as I am used to being the only girl racing against the boys. But at the end of the day, the important part of the job is what you do in the race car. Is it harder for a woman to "make it" to where you FAST FACTS: See Simona in are than a man? action and get your It’s harder to get the right opportunity. tickets l Simona is one of the world’s for the Coats Do you find it difficult being a woman in a maleHire Ipswich leading female racing car drivers Supersprint fr dominated sport? om and has raced in Formula E, supercars.com I think a woman has to prove herself more. /I ps wich. imona De Silvestro is one a fearless woman. She is not only the Supercars first full-time female driver but the only female driver — and she’s got an impressive resume behind her that puts her in pole position with any male driver in the series. Simona earned herself the nickname ‘the Iron Maiden’ in 2011 when she had a big crash at Indy which saw her car fly high enough for the nose to hook into the chain link debris fencing above the wall at Turn 4 — tearing a 1-by-1.5 metre hole — whipping the car around and upside down. By the time rescue crews arrived and got her out, Simona had sustained second degree burns to the back of her right hand and superficial burns to her left hand. But this didn’t hold Simona back. A true testament to her personality, she decided a day later that she had to get back in the car and get on it. Like getting back on the horse. Born in Switzerland, she has just relocated to Main Beach here on the Gold Coast. She has proven time and again that she can hold her own in the motorsport world and has several skills on and off the track — including being able to speak five languages. Simona took a little time out from her training for the Ipswich Supersprint on the 20-22 July to chat with Get it Magazine. You can catch her race later this month where she will take on the Supercars male dominated line-up with true girl power!

For the day after, make sure you get lots of VEGETABLES in, particularly the best ones for burning fat like ASPARAGUS and BROCCOLI, as well as rocket and spinach. is dehydrated, it won't be burning fat, and you will likely be storing all the fat you ate last night! So, drink water — lots of it. The technical formula is 1L per 25kg of bodyweight + 1L per hour of exercise. 2. Go for a long walk: Not only will getting out in the sun make you feel better, but walking is going to be the best thing to stimulate your metabolism. You probably ate lots of carbs last night and you must burn them off before they start converting into fat! So, get out and do something — bike, walk, swim (if you are sober) or even play tennis. Just make sure you are breathing a bit heavy and sweating a little.

How to not gain weight after a big night out

3. Don't eat any starchy carbs today: I know, when you are hungover, sometimes it feels better to eat carbs. But, the day after you have eaten lots of them, you can definitely go without. That means no bread, rice, pasta, potato, corn, sugar etc. For the day after, make sure you get lots of vegetables in, particularly the best ones for burning fat like asparagus and broccoli, as well as rocket and spinach. Eat some protein and a bit of healthy fats from olive oil, avocado, fish etc.

With Jeff Osborne from Vision Personal Training Bundall

he hardest thing about this time of year is that it can be so difficult to say no. And sometimes, saying no isn't what you want to do — you want to have fun! Sometimes you can, and not pay the price! Here are a few great tips for what you can do the day after a blowout of overeating, over drinking and generally making choices that normally lead to weight gain! Note: I am not condoning eating crap all the time and then trying these tips! All I'm saying is that if you find yourself in this position, there are some things you can do. If you try this too often, they aren't going to work. At some point you need to eat great food and do some exercise consistently to have the body that you want. 1. First thing in the morning: If you have had too many drinks and deserts, the chances are you are dehydrated. That can be why you weigh less on the scales after a few drinks... but beware! If your body

4. Plan and prepare the next few days: After a blowout, for some reason, the next few days are when the weight starts to creep on. The best thing you can do for that is plan out a few days of eating well. Get your exercise done and if you know there is a party coming up where you will have lots of potentially dangerous treats and goodies there, do the smart thing and have a super-healthy meal before you leave so you are full and feel less like eating the treats. At the end of the day, being healthy is NEVER about eating all of the naughty treats you love or about being the person at every party that doesn't drink or eat treats. It goes both ways! But if you really want to stay in great shape or even lose weight, you have to put some forethought into what you are going to be eating. Being mindful and organised are two of the most important tools for doing well over the silly season. So, have fun, not too much fun. Be safe and look after yourself and your family. If you really are worried about what you will be served, have the parties at your house and create the meals yourself! Vision has over 1000 meal ideas in their database and there are libraries online you can access for even more ideas.
