Valentine Aph rodisiac From the editor SARAH BLINCO

I have the misfortune of getting sick every time we go on a holiday. It’s very annoying for me and my fiancé, Cooper. Recently we went to Sydney, all ready to wine and dine for four fun nights, only for me to fall ill with a virus and be bed ridden for the majority of the time. In sweet form, Cooper headed off to the pharmacy and returned with supplies, tucked me in, made sure I was ok and kept me company even though I really was at my worst. This occasion was reminiscent of another, when we’d booked a New Year’s Eve stay in the fun seaside city of Brighton, England. Congested and fluey, there was no way I was able to ring in 2013 in any form I’d imagined. We sat in bed in a typically small UK hotel room watching the reality stars of Made in Chelsea (I love it!) sip champagne in their annual NYE television special, while outside the real party raged on and fireworks illuminated the sky. To me, that’s love − when someone chooses to hang out with you despite the other options really being more appealing; when someone puts your needs before theirs, and when they accept you, even if your taste in television really is dreadful.

Friday 14th February Arrival Champagne at 6.30pm Aphrodisiac Indulgence at 7.00pm

Forgive our team for being a little soppy this month, but this is our one issue in the year that’s dedicated to love. We believe this is important because whether we’re talking about love between couples, parents and children, siblings, friends, a woman and her dog, or self-worth, it’s a nice thing to celebrate, don’t you think? Additionally, we consider love encompasses other things like happiness, confidence, passion, dreams − the good-news story − just the kind we like to share in Get it.

Including a six course menu with deluxe beverage package Treat your beloved to a romantic journey that will stir the passion and delight the senses. Room81 has created the perfect Valentine’s occasion with a celebration of aphrodisiac ingredients, beautifully intertwinned into a delicious dining experience.

Whatever your definition of love, our hope for this issue is that you’ll get a smile out of a story, discover a style suggestion that will make you feel sexy and a confidence-boosting tip you can utilise on today’s precarious dating scene; that you’ll gain inspiration for an event you’d like to attend with someone special, and a tactic worth implementing in order to let go of hurt so you can embrace love again.

And finally… Stay overnight at Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach, enjoy a complimentary upgrade to Superior Ocean View when booking the Valentine’s Aphrodisiac Dinner.

Wishing you all big love this month with one final sentiment, best expressed by our wise friend, Carrie Bradshaw:“The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that’s just fabulous”.

ENTERTAINMENT with Riana Horner

Riana Horner meets internationally renowned performer, Shannon Holtzapffel, who has returned to Australia to judge the new season of So You Think You Can Dance, airing this month on Network Ten You have had an amazing journey throughout your dance career, what are your first memories of dancing? I know it’s hard to believe, but I remember dancing from probably two years old when I was attempting to do the Moon Walk. I would watch MTV and copy Michael Jackson. That would definitely be my first memory, I was always trying out his moves. Since then what has been your most cherished moment of your dancing life? Actually, relating to my first memory of dancing, my most memorable moment would be dancing for Michael Jackson when I was chosen for This Is It in Los Angeles. That must have been such an extraordinary time? Yes, it was the highest of highest moments to be Michael’s principal dancer. As we know, the tour got cancelled so it was also a low time for a lot of us. I had the most amazing experience working with him and just being at that level, following a lifelong dream stemming from childhood. What does it take to impress you on So You Think You Can Dance? The most important thing for me as a judge is I want to find the best talent in Australia, and that they can actually dance! There is a whole variety of things we are looking for across the board of dance genres, from ballerinas to hip hop artists, and everything in between. We are looking for people who have technique, great training, passion and dedication; and to know that a lot of hard work went into it. I’ve got to tell you with the top 20, you will not be disappointed. We have found immense talent and I honestly am so happy to be back in Australia at the moment and be amongst such inspiring, great talent. It’s an honour. Who do you think is the toughest judge? What’s great about this judging panel is we have all bonded so well and we are here to support the kids, we are not here to be tough on them. I mean we are going to be hard on them, don’t get me wrong, but you are going to find the judging panel on the new season to be very supportive and we are on their side. We want to encourage them to do their best. We know it’s a tough world but you are going to see a very different dynamic to what you have seen before. What would you say is the biggest challenge when judging? Actually having to turn great dancers away. They’re fighting for only 20 positions and I can tell you we would have loved to have February 2014

DANCE

passion

accepted more than 20. There are so many talented dancers, it is hard for us to turn people away who are still deserving of the show. These dancers have dedicated their whole life to it, all of their emotions and even physically they throw everything into it so it’s hard to say no. If we were looking for a top 40 it would be much easier than a top 20. Is the competition in dance getting tougher? Yes. I am very thankful for my career. As a professional dancer, you find that most people 12

hear ‘no’ rather than ‘yes’. What advice would you give to somebody dancing around in their room, wanting to break into a dancing career? What’s amazing about today’s age is how accessible dance is with the internet. The dance community has opened up so much in the last five years because of YouTube with dance classes online and choreographers getting millions of views. If you’re inspired to have a career and if dance is naturally ingrained in you, go with it and get to dance class.

SPOTLIGHT

eaven Knows, Not a Day Goes By and Walk Away Renee − they’re gorgeous, classic ‘90s tracks that you can’t help but hum or sing along to whenever the melodies are in ear shot. Rick Price is of course the artist behind these memorable hits, and he’s one of Australia’s favourite vocalists. Multi-platinum awards and constant touring throughout the 1990s made him a household name in Australia and internationally. He’s been consistently busy since however, now living in Tennessee with his wife of two years, Libby, steadily writing, recording and performing. Rick’s latest album, The Water’s Edge, emanates a mature singer-songwriter vibe, evidently influenced by soulful blues and roots musical genres. Deep lyrics and a passionate sound makes for a mesmerising live set, which will be showcased at the Arts Centre on 15 February. Rick’s show will be supported by fellow Queenslander, and popular Gold Coast son, Casey Barnes, who first came to fame on our shores in Australian Idol in 2009. Casey’s music has made an impact around the world. He’s had dance hits in Europe, written

songs in America and played alongside international stars like Bryan Adams. In fact, the story of how Rick and Casey met while ordering lunch in Nashville could be fodder for a song in itself. Casey was in town on a ‘hope’ visit − hoping to be inspired for writing his next album. While he was ordering a sandwich, Rick heard his Aussie accent and, as we all do when abroad, commented, “Hey, you’re Aussie!” They got chatting and Casey told him why he was in Nashville on his own, so Rick offered to assist and then they started writing! The rest, as they say, is history. Catch this pair of dynamic, engaging and talented performers as part of Rick Price’s long awaited 2014 River Tour. This show will feature Casey’s new single Valentine, which he wrote with Rick in Nashville. Rick Price with support act Casey Barnes will perform in The Basement, Saturday 15 February. Tickets $30 (adult), $26 (concession). Doors and bar open at 6:30pm; Showtime 7:30pm. Bookings on P 5588 4000 or theartscentregc.com.au/whats-on February 2014

HOT

in the city

Codie wears Piping Hot clothing available from Target and Target online

LOCAL INSPIRATION with Sarah Blinco

Surfing champion, Piping Hot team rider and gorgeous Kingscliff local, Codie Klein, spares five minutes in her busy schedule for Get it What have the past six months been like for you as part of the Piping Hot Team Rider program? Some of the weirdest of my life! I signed with Piping Hot (pipinghot.com.au) in June ‘13 and did my first contest as part of their team in early July for the Coffs Harbour pro junior where I came third. Then a week later just before I was about to leave for America and Europe I injured my knee while training, tearing my meniscus, undergoing surgery and was out of the water for three months. Missing both my trips and not being able to surf was so hard, but Piping Hot have been so great to me through the injury and I have been given the all clear from my surgeon, so I’ll be good to surf again soon; I am so excited to be back surfing and representing Piping Hot. What achievement from 2013 are you most proud of? I have a few. Coming second at the ISA world games in Panama was definitely my highlight. Also signing with Piping Hot, and just how I have handled my injury and learnt so much about myself and my body. Where have you travelled to recently, and do you have any favourite memories from countries or cities you’ve competed in? Over the past two years I’ve been all around from Peru to Panama, through LA over to Hawaii February 2014

and parts of Asia. I am so lucky to have all those experiences I think every country presents its own special experience. Pans (Panama) was very unique for me. I have never seen so many different cultures in one country. To drive through a massive city then through slums and then four hours down the road where we competed was like a tropical paradise. I think it will always be a special experience for me doing well over there as part of the Australian team. What’s a day in the life of Codie Klein like? When I am surfing it’s basically wake up with the sun, go surfing for a few hours, then head off to training at either Surfing Australia or the Casuarina rec centre. Then I head off to uni for a class or two and back for a surf in the afternoon. I live a really busy life but I love it and I embrace all the opportunities I’ve been given. You’re studying commerce and finance at Bond Uni; why did you decide on this particular degree? I am doing a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in accounting and a minor in finance. I’ve always loved numbers and I am lucky enough to be on a scholarship at Bond. I only study part time so I can still focus on surfing. I love the satisfaction of solving massive equations and it’s a degree that later in life I can use anywhere in the world. 16

Who are your idols, and what advice do you give to people who look up to you? I look up to Steph Gilmore because she was from Kingscliff, but I also went to a conference where Grant Hackett spoke on how he studied law while training for the Olympics, so he is also a great mentor for me. I think I’d say to anyone that if you want something badly enough and you’re willing to work for it, you can get there. For me, partying and late nights have never been my thing. I love working hard and basically, if success was easy everyone would have it. What is your success mantra? I’ve always put a lot of pressure on myself to do well in all aspects of my life. For me goals are so important. I haven’t set anything too specific for next year because of my injury, but I want to be on the world tour in two years so whatever it takes to get there I’m willing to do it. I’ve always operated by the ideal of aiming for success, but never sacrifice happiness to get there. When you’re not surfing or studying, where would we find you hanging out? I’m just on the other side of the border in Kingscliff and I love coffee. Having breakfast and drinking coffee at Babalou Bar is the best. What do you love most from the latest Piping Hot range? COVER FEATURE with Samantha Jayne

Love GAME Samantha Jayne is renowned as one of Australia’s top love matchmakers, and for years she has been committed to helping individuals find their perfect match. She spills the beans for our special love issue on where we’re going wrong in the game of love

atchmaking is my business. I’m great at it and I love connecting people. I get to play the really well-connected friend, the one who knows a wide network of people and inevitably the one you’ll hit it off with. You’ve probably seen matchmakers referenced on television or in the news, and the reason people are enjoying working with matchmakers nowadays, is because no one really wants to hang out in a pub or club to find a genuine connection, right? I’ve met lots of people, from all walks of life, and I’ve noticed there is a pattern in what most are doing wrong when it comes to the search for love. In a nutshell, criteria lists are too long and extreme, and these days we’re all work and not enough play. Adjustments to lifestyle and attitudes have meant I’ve played witness to a wonderful number of success stories, including marriages, one couple enjoying parenthood with triplets, and many more with happy relationships where the individuals involved thought they’d never find love. It’s exciting for me to be able to make people happy, all in a day’s work. I’ve certainly seen some pretty interesting ‘selection criteria’ come across my desk. I once worked with a lady who wouldn’t date a man based on how he pronounced the latter H; I had a surgeon who was very stuck on a particular height within a three centimetre range, and another client who would only date a person born in February 2014

a specific month. I even met a man once who came to me after he had over 500 dates and not one relationship. As you can imagine, he was exhausted and felt like a complete failure. What he didn’t know was that he was going on his dates expecting to fail and that was exactly what he was doing. He was selfsabotaging, and I only agreed to work with him once he committed to change. This readjustment in mentality did take a lot of coaching, however in the end he found love. But a lesson to everyone, be mindful − are you subconsciously setting out to fail, and if so, why? What I do know, is behind every extensive list of selection criteria is a anxious individual who wants to find The One, but without even realising it, this long list is keeping them single as no one will meet their criteria. As a result, on some levels people feel safer, as they don’t have to put their heart on the line. But, loneliness ensues. 18

The good news is, if you want to find love you will. All it takes is getting out of your head and into your heart. What I mean by this, is fall in love like you did when you were a teenager. And, as mentioned, I’ve found that most singles struggling to find a partner have forgotten how to have fun; life balance is out of alignment and they’ve lost the ability to enjoy ‘me time’. Dating and attracting the right person is all about how to best represent yourself. I can assure you that just because one has achieved professional success, doesn’t mean dating will come naturally to him or her. In fact, in my experience, it’s quite the opposite. All those extra hours spent working hard to build your career profile ultimately comes with sacrifice. The thing is, missed social events, gatherings and parties are all missed opportunities to let your hair down, meet new people and develop relationship skills. On initial encounters, see the person in front of you for who they really are, not their potential. Take your criteria list,

See the person in front of you for who they really are, not their potential. Take your criteria list, scrunch it up, and make your mind up based on connection and values

scrunch it up, and make your mind up based on connection and values. For a relationship to work it’s critical to be with someone whose values align with your own, especially when it comes to important areas like family, lifestyle (e.g. smoking, drinking, health), views on fidelity, financial goals and interests. You don’t have to date your identical twin, but you do need to want the same things out of life. Birds of a feather really do flock together, and opposites attract but only in the short term. Take your time before you make your mind up. Three dates is the magic number before you should decide on whether there is relationship potential. Expect date one to be a disaster and awkward. This is normal. After all, you don’t know each other and are both probably nervous and trying to impress, not to mention have your judgemental hats on. Take an interest in your date, ask questions, find out what makes them tick and most importantly be positive and have fun. You know how it happens − you’ll fall in love when you least expect it!

MATCHMAKER SECRETS: HOW TO WIN IN LOVE l Let your hair down. Go out and meet new people. Your dream partner is not going to knock at your door, you need to take action and get yourself out there. l Be open and honest. The truth always comes out in the end. Be proud of who you are and reveal the real you. Vulnerability takes courage and pays off if you want a genuine relationship. l Be refreshing, polish your image. You’ve heard it said before, and it’s true, if you look and feel your best you’ll attract the best. Purchase some new threads, book in for that hairstyle you have been considering, and start a hobby you’ve always dreamed of. l Search for someone with the same values and interests. It will help in the long term. Couples that play together stay together. Imagine if you enjoyed the same music, concerts and sporting events. How much fun would you have! l Be the kind of person you want to date. Are you looking for someone positive,

upbeat, fun and genuine? Well, be just that. You’ll attract the same qualities when you are feeling fantastic. l Be spontaneous even when you’re exclusive. Passion is the key to a lasting relationship. Light your mate’s fire, find out what they really desire. l If you like someone, tell them. Never assume knowledge. l No one has a type. Instead, people choose to date the same kind of people because they feel comfortable doing so. Everyone’s different. Embrace each other’s unique story and try something new, you never know what might happen. l And above all, have fun! Remember, it’s not work. All work and no play is no fun for anyone. Balance is so important.

Samantha Jayne is a human behavioural expert. She’s certified by the Matchmaking Institute of New York, and is the director Australia’s prestigious and private matchmaking agency, Blue Label Life (bluelabellife.com. au) and founder of makemencommit.com.

First date etiquette Christie Sharpe, Gold Coaster and creator of dating app, Fancied (getFancied.com), shares her top 5 tips on how to conduct yourself on what can often prove to be a stressful and challenging event...

1

DO: Dress to impress. Make an effort with your appearance, as first impressions are the ones that will stick around. If you turn up looking scruffy it’ll just show the other person that their opinion of you isn’t important.

2

DON’T: Talk about your ex. You’ll either end up giving off the idea that you’re not over your ex or still bitter about the break-up. Leave the past in the past and move on.

3

DO: Ask questions. Show an interest in the other person’s work or hobbies. Not only will they feel as though you have respect for them but you may uncover 19

an interesting side to your date that you may not have been aware of before.

4

DON’T: Gossip. When you talk about others, you simultaneously reveal a negative side of your personality. You want to come across as a positive person – not someone who may bitch about your date afterwards.

5

DO: Be Yourself. A bit of a cliché but it’s a classic for a reason. There’s no point in pretending to be something you’re not – it’ll be obvious and make you feel more nervous. If they don’t like you for who you are, they aren’t the right person for you. February 2014

Do you have smokers’ lines and you don’t even smoke? Are you sick of the jowl droop? You can now turn back the clock with the most advanced skin tightening treatment in the world, the Protégé Elite. The Protégé Elite provides patients with an affordable, non-surgical, virtually pain-free solution for tightening and smoothing, and it’s available exclusively at Hope Island Medispa. The Elite is a comfortable treatment with no downtime; an excellent alternative to cosmetic surgery, scientifically proven and clinically tested. Another first to be offered at Hope Island Medispa is the 24k Gold Facial. Gold was introduced into skincare back in 2006 in Japan, and much worldwide research time has been invested in it for well over twenty years to ensure it is safe and effective. In the past, gold

miracles

was used to treat a variety of skin problems, in places like Rome, Egypt and Japan. Cleopatra was said to have worn a gold mask every night to keep her youthful looks! Whether that’s true or not, we now know that gold is not just a soft and expensive metal but is also proving to be a healthy material to use on the skin, hence the reason why many who suffer skin allergies caused by certain metals can only wear gold. Gold is now a highly sought after ingredient by many cosmetic manufacturers and gold treatments are extremely popular in Europe, Japan and the Middle East. It is in the early stages of catching on here, and is only

available in specialised salons, such as Hope Island Medispa. The benefits of gold for the skin include: • Treats the skin by improving and stimulating circulation • Increases radiance and stimulates skin cells • Gold slows down collagen depletion • Reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and age spots • Gold prevents premature aging of the skin by fighting off free radicals • Gold also has the ability to lighten the complexion.

VALENTINE’S DAY: love stories

Prepare to smile as four Get it readers share their most romantic moment for our special love issue

Michelle + Hamish − in Michelle Lacey’s words ’ve known Hamish McDonald for a long time. For ten years in fact. We had been dating for about four years before he proposed to me in Paris in July last year. We had planned a Europe trip of a lifetime. Our adventures began with a two week stopover in Hong Kong, where we explored the city’s bustling streets and electric nightlife. We then flew direct to Paris, eager to explore the city of love. It wasn’t my first time to the romantic city, as I had visited Paris with a girlfriend when I was 18. For years I raved about the city, remembering the gorgeous French patisseries and not forgetting the little laneways with dozens of ‘people watchers’ sitting outside cafes, lining the sidewalks blowing clouds of smoke high into the air. It is a magical city with so many French clichés, and I’ve always loved that. On our first morning in Paris we had an early breakfast at our hotel. We were staying just two blocks away from the city’s iconic Arc de Triomphe, so that was our first stop for the day. We had to walk underground, underneath the city’s busiest roundabouts to reach the impressive monument. It was only 8am on a Saturday morning, so we had the entire place to ourselves. Located directly underneath the arch I was busy taking pictures of the beautiful carvings, little did I know what Hamish was about to do. First, he asked me to take a seat, motioning for me to sit on a large concrete slab nearby. “No, I’m fine thanks,” I replied, thinking nothing of it and continued taking photos. A moment later, he stood right in front of me holding a little red box in his hands. It was a confusing moment because I don’t usually deal too well with surprises. It wasn’t until he opened the box that I fully realised what was happening. I couldn’t help but laugh nervously and begin to cry. How had I not picked up on this sooner? My best friend asked me to marry him under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and I couldn’t be happier. The ring fitted perfectly. February 2014

l a s o p o r P e h T

Hamish said he’d secretively purchased it during our two weeks in Hong Kong! After making phone calls to our families to tell them the exciting news, it felt only natural that we should find the closest convenience store, buy their most expensive champagne and head towards the lawn underneath the Eiffel Tower. And that’s exactly what we did.

decided to do our own countdown. During the countdown Ryan played our favourite song. I thought it was cute that he was starting off the year with our song. Then all of the sudden he was down on his knee. With a big lump in his throat, he told me how much he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me and proposed. I could not believe it. I was crying and had the biggest smile on my face at the same time. Of course I said yes! Our friends captured the moment on camera and we had champagne to celebrate. It was the best New Year’s Eve ever, and we cannot wait to celebrate our engagement with our family and friends in the coming months.

Ryan + Denyka − in Denyka Roberson’s words yan and I met nearly six years ago when he asked if he could sit beside me in a lecture at university. We have been inseparable ever since. We had joked about getting married and being the man he is, I knew he would want it to be a surprise and propose when I least expected it! For New Year’s, we decided to spend the night at our friend’s house. Both Ryan and my friend had set alarms for ten minutes before midnight. During that day I had a feeling that something big was going to happen that night – thinking that someone in our group of friends would announce an engagement or pregnancy. Ryan seemed calm and normal the whole night and I was not suspicious at all. Close to midnight, my friend suggested we head outside for a better view of the fireworks. We made our way up a hill and Ryan came up shortly after. There were so many fireworks in all directions that we 30

Neil + Leisa − in Leisa Anderson’s words t was a beautiful south-east Queensland April day, the wind had dropped and the sky was blue and cloudless. It had started out as a normal Sunday morning − a sleep in, lazy breakfast and we were considering what to do for the rest of the day. Neil had had a full on couple of weeks at work and had been really distracted the previous weekend, going into town about four times on the one day citing forgotten shopping items. I was worried that he might be getting overly stressed at work and was trying to think of something

to do that he would really enjoy. As we were discussing it, he suggested we should get dressed and go to a nearby winery that we hadn’t gotten around to visiting yet. Great I thought, a nice relaxing afternoon! We embarked on our day’s road trip, and as we were near Toowoomba, I made an offhanded comment that we should have gone and climbed Tabletop Mountain on such a nice day, since we’d also been planning to do that for ages. He turned off the main highway and said, “Well we can at least go and see the view from the lookout.” Whenever we were in the area, we’d try to fit in a drive up there − anyone familiar with the region will agree the views across the Lockyer Valley are peaceful and sublime, so I thought nothing of this side trip. We wandered around for a while, taking in the scenery and chatting, and then Neil put his arms around me. We stayed like this for a while and then he kissed me. With his arms around me he said that he had something for me. Being totally oblivious to what was happening, I said, “Oh what would that be?” He reached into his pocket, pulled out a box, got down on one knee and asked, “Would you be my wife?” Stunned, I reached down to kiss him and he slid the ring onto my finger. It was absolutely gorgeous! He had chosen it the weekend before when he had gone into town so many times. He had come back home one of those times to borrow one of my rings to get the correct sizing. No wonder

I thought he was acting so strangely! We are getting married in May and are looking forward to the rest of our lives together.

Renee + Shannon − in Renee Pask’s words hannon was overseas travelling for four months and started to miss me four weeks in. I was so excited when he offered to fly me over to London to spend a few weeks with him! Of course I accepted the offer and the first night I arrived in London he said, “Can you check my flight tickets and tell me when I’m off to Spain?” I reluctantly agreed, wondering why he wouldn’t have bothered to check this because he had had months to do it already. I opened his flight wallet and had one of those ‘wow’ moments when I found tickets in both our names for flights to Paris the following day. I was over the moon! We headed off to Paris and on the first

night Shannon took me out for dinner, and then wanted to head over to the Eiffel Tower. As lovely as that sounded, I’d already started yawning and suggested we could go the next night. Little did I know he had the ring in his pocket the whole time. Patiently he agreed, and the next night packed the camera, a rug, bottle of red and off we went to spend some time lounging around (so I thought) in one of the world’s most romantic spaces. We were laying under the Tower admiring the scenery when I noticed in front of us that people were setting up a romantic white linen rug on the grass with candles and wine. I laughed and remarked to Shannon that it looked like there was a proposal about to happen. At that moment he was on his knees ready to ask me, but thought twice and put the ring in his pocket. He sat back for a second as I joked and threatened to call out to warn the couple in front, “Don’t do it!” Next thing I knew, he was on his knee and without hesitating this time, pulled out the ring he’d been holding onto all this time, and said, “Oh for God’s sake Renee, will you marry me?” I laughed and cried and felt pretty bad for kidding around about the other couple, little had I known it was about to be me. He prompted after a few seconds, “Well you haven’t answered...?” “Yes yes yes!” I finally and happily replied.

REAL LIFE with Kristy Zenk

from FLAB to

fab

Kristy Zenk describes her tumultuous relationship with food, and how it all changed once she stopped counting calories and started listening to her body

or most of my life, I was overweight. Not to enormous proportions but about 20kg too much, just enough to feel uncomfortable, unattractive, miserable and like I was missing out on my life. I was tired, lazy, feeling hopeless and when it came to food, sometimes it felt totally out of control. I tried popular diets and punished myself with rigorous exercise. Ever hopeful that this time it would all magically fall into place and I could have the charmed life that others seemed to be having, frolicking on the beach in a bikini without a care in the world. Alas, it didn’t happen. The scenario was more like lapsing to overeat even more often because of the starvation diet torture. Hurting so much from the exercise that a few days recovery was required each time and the dread to go back to it was overwhelming, so I just didn’t. And you can hear the common rhetoric chants in your head – ‘its just willpower, a little discipline, a little self control.’ Making you feel even worse because you couldn’t do it. The vicious cycle would spin more out of control and seem even more out of reach to the point of despair. I’m not sure how many times I tried to start again and said to myself, ‘from Monday I will be good’. Whatever that meant. Then one time in my life I read an article that claimed ‘diets didn’t work’. I was living proof of that fact but I couldn’t quite work out what was supposed to work instead. After I stopped dieting and ate what I thought were normal portions and put on another 5kg, I started to panic, what was I supposed to do now? February 2014

One day I decided that was it – no more thinking about food, planning to eat, measuring food, counting calories or trying to lose weight. The plan was to eat whatever was around when I was hungry and just go and enjoy my life, as the preoccupation with weight loss certainly didn’t bring me any joy, especially because it wasn’t working! While I didn’t lose any weight, at least I stabilised and didn’t put on any more which was a victory in itself. Then with my mind focussed on just being happy, I started to notice how different foods made me feel, just out of curiosity more than anything else. Certain foods made me tired, others made 34

me energetic, some made me clogged up and others made me feel wired and out of control. I wanted to be informed, so I read articles and books about foods and nutrition with this newfound awareness. I would just see if it worked for me or not in terms of how it felt with a completely open mind, rather than with a preoccupation with weight loss. It was a slow process over many years and really without conscious attention to it, more like continuing to do what felt good and letting go of anything that didn’t. For example an article on meat and how difficult it is for the body to break down and

digest, led me to see how it felt for me – I felt tired and lethargic after eating it and clogged up for days afterwards. I started to eat less and less of it and felt better and better. Refined sugar and any food with sugar in it made me wired and crazy for about an hour, then moody thereafter leading to a total obsession with eating more, working out when I was going to eat more and then never being able to stop at the one piece when I did eat it. Unless I finished the whole packet or felt sick, there was no stopping me where sugar was concerned. This is interesting in itself, as the common belief is that the person is lacking in willpower, self-control or determination if they can’t stop at one serving. I’m here to tell you that sometimes it’s not about the person at all but the food you are eating. How do I know this? Because when I stopped eating sugar and replaced it with other sweeteners that included vitamins and minerals, which the body is actually craving, the overeating completely stopped. I can make a whole batch of my chocolate tweets recipe, now made from raw cacao and organic maple syrup, which tastes amazing and just eat one or two. Completely enough. The whole week’s supply is in the fridge and it stays there without any willpower required on

Are you sick of your Tuckshop arms?

my behalf because it just doesn’t trigger the compulsive overeating response. Do you know how amazing that feels? Finally in control! But not by any exertion required on my part, just awareness, exploration, an open mind and a willingness to feel the way that’s right for me, rather than listen to the conflicting advice out there. Or bow down to the sometimes subtle and often in-your-face opposition informing that what I was doing was wrong. The naysayers didn’t deter me. I was so ecstatic to learn what I learned; I wanted to tell everyone about it. However I discovered two things, not everyone is at the stage in their journey where they are ready to listen or change, and sometimes I came across like the food police,“You shouldn’t be eating that, do you know what that will do to you?” Just a pain to be around! That’s not how people learn anyway and it’s not how I wanted to be. The second thing I discovered was that we are all so individual that what worked for me, may not work at all for someone else. There is no absolute right when it comes to weight loss and how our bodies work. There is no one size fits all. That’s what led me to write my book. I figured that I could tell my story, detail all the moments of discovery, the realisations, how

RELATIONSHIPS

with Isiah McKimmie

The art of

seduction

Isiah McKimmie outlines the good girl’s guide to keeping it sexy behind closed doors

hether you’re in a new or long-term relationship, seduction will add spice to any situation. Often people can be shy to initiate, but think of it like this: seduction is a little like a game that you’re both willing to play and it’s all about confidence. Some might misunderstand ‘seduction’, as unfortunately popular media has implied the term to mean the leading astray of an unsuspecting lover who will be taken advantage of and tossed away. However, continuing to seduce each other in the right way,is a great tactic for keeping a relationship alive. If seduction (or coercion) only ever goes one way, it’s generally a sign that your relationship is in trouble. The partner continually making advances begins to feel that they’re not really attractive to their partner and it leads to resentment and tension. In my view, women are given confusing messages about seduction. We’re supposed to be ever-sexy and seductive, but very rarely ‘give up sex’. Any woman who uses her seductive skills to actually have sex (gasp!) has been in days gone by labelled all manner of terms. It’s no wonder we’re generally coy about our interest in sex! WHAT CAN YOU DO TO EMBRACE YOUR FEMININITY AND MASTER THE ART OF SEDUCTION? Be comfortable with yourself To really master the art of seduction, you need to believe you’re sexy and go in knowing that your partner wants you (and he does!). Confidence is sexy. It comes through in the way you move, the way you speak and all your interactions. Seduction requires you to ‘give a little up’; whichever way you decide to seduce someone, you will need to put yourself out there − and that takes confidence. Take a deep breath, and give it a go. Don’t be afraid to show a little skin, hold eye contact for just a moment longer, walk with a little more swing in your hips, play with your hair. February 2014

Learn to enjoy sex Fifty Shades of Grey has changed things a little for women recently, but we still live in a society that less than 100 years ago believed women didn’t have sexual feelings at all. There’s still an awful lot of shame and embarrassment around it. Many of the clients I see as a sex therapist are embarrassed to even talk about sex with their partners, so it is no surprise their sexual adventures have often all but grounded to a halt. Becoming comfortable having, wanting and enjoying sex is vital to the art of seduction. Make sure when you do have sex, you enjoy it by asking for what you want, spending adequate time ‘warming up’, and regularly trying new things. Balance power Power balance is important in long-term relationships. An imbalance of power usually leads to a subconscious avoidance of sex by the person who feels like they’re not in control.Work to ensure your relationship is a balanced and equitable one to guarantee you both maintain interest in sex and take it in turns initiating. Make the other person think they’re the one in control It’s the ultimate contradiction, but a great way to seduce someone is to have them believe that they are so hot that you just can’t help yourself, you have no other option but to have them. Boosting someone else’s confidence is also a great way to get them in the mood. Hard and fast You know ‘that woman’ − red lipstick, heels, a look in her eye that says, ‘I know what I want’. Think Samantha from Sex and the City. The hard and fast approach might involve greeting your partner wearing nothing but heels and lingerie, or nothing at all. It might be grabbing your partner and kissing them in a way that means only one thing; or walking straight up to someone at a bar and asking to buy them a drink. Slow and subtle Personally, I’ve never been too comfortable with the hard and fast approach. I’m well aware there’s a part of me still clinging to my sweet36

girl-from-the-country origins, despite spending my days talking to people about sex. Seduction can also be subtle; think a more Charlotte-like approach (to reference another character from our favourite show about sex in a big city). Try a glance that says, ‘come and take me’, a gentle brush of the thigh, or simply leaving a nice bottle of massage oil lying somewhere your partner will see it. GET STARTED BY ... l Sexting your partner while they’re at work (as long as they don’t work with anyone under 18!) l Wearing ‘that outfit’ l Offering to give your partner a relaxing massage after their long day l Leaving handcuffs lying suggestively on the bed l Suggesting a candlelit dinner

QUICK TIPS FOR UNLEASHING YOUR SEDUCTIVE SIDE l Take up pole dancing or burlesque. Great for boosting confidence, learning seductive moves and as a bonus, fitness! l Consult a sex therapist to help you break down barriers around sex and boost sexual confidence. l Visit a sexy boutique to pick up some fun tools, like a nice massage oil, a whip or blindfold. l Buy some sexy lingerie to boost confidence and turn your partner on. l Order the fancy champagne − let’s face it, sometimes we just need a bit of Dutch courage to get the party started.

PREVENTIONis better than cure ADVERTISING PROMOTION

When was the last time you had a dental check-up? Get one FREE this month t’s the start of a new school year and a busy time for all, but have you considered your kids’ teeth yet? Often children are forgotten when it comes to dental care, however, it’s crucial to begin early, to develop a lifetime of good dental hygiene habits. Due to developing dexterity, children should be supervised for oral hygiene until eight years, or when you’re confident that they have a good technique. One way to make brushing more enjoyable for kids is to play their favourite song at the start of brushing and finish brushing when the song ends. As children enter school, it’s important to start taking them for formal checkups. Often it’s just for an introduction to a dental team and to make sure that their gums and teeth are healthy. Regular dental checkups are of course critical for adults too. Checks every six months will help keep your oral health on the right track and identify any problems early on. Despite regular brushing and flossing, calculus deposits still occur and can only be removed with special dental equipment. This minimises the chances of gum disease and dental cavities. With early detection, major expenses and pain can be avoided, such as root canal treatment or even worse, tooth loss. Even dentists need to see other dentists for a proper dental clean! Additionally, when you visit Luminous Dental, you’ll be impressed by the contemporary technology on display that allows you to see exactly where issues are. Luminous Dental’s state of the art dental chair is equipped with an intra-oral camera which enables the dentist to show you on a screen and explain problematic areas. They also utilise digital x-ray that emits less radiation than traditional x-ray machines. The team at Luminous Dental truly

believes that prevention is better than cure, and takes the time to educate patients on the best ways of looking after teeth to improve overall health and wellbeing. They listen carefully to patients and address concerns, and are committed to providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Luminous Dental specialise in all oral

healthcare services for the whole family, including general, preventative, paediatric and cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, teeth whitening, crown and bridge work. Conveniently located within the Hope Island Shopping Centre, 10 Santa Barbara Road P 5655 5288 luminousdental.com.au

Until 28 February Luminous Dental are offering FREE dental check up and clean for patients with private health that includes dental cover. Patients without private health insurance can also take advantage of a heavily discounted offer: adults pay only $100 (save $70), kids just $30. 37

TRAVEL

with Sarah Blinco

Sarah Blinco explores four destinations not typically associated with romance (as Venice or Paris are) but that are undoubtedly charming places to discover with the one you love PRAGUE, Czech Republic Where The capital and largest city of the Czech Republic in central Europe; surrounded by countries including Poland, Germany, Austria and Hungary. Why Because Prague is more beautiful than Paris. There, it is said. A big call, I know. Prague, with its irresistible medieval city centre, Vltava River and bridges, extraordinary Prague Castle, famous Old Town Hall Tower + Astronomical Clock’s hourly public show, and landmarks celebrating possibly the most peaceful uprising in history, The Velvet Revolution, which marked the end of communism here. When The best times to visit Prague are during its spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and there are fewer tourists. Summer is busy, and winter can be a little cold (although with that said, Prague blanketed in snow is glorious). You’ll love It’s not so expensive in Prague, and besides the stunning scenery, there’s also many pouryour-own-pint pubs (like beer-factory.cz) which the boys in particular enjoy. If you like to party, Europe’s biggest music club, Karlovy Lazne, is here (karlovylazne.cz), and jazz fans will adore visiting renowned venues Agharta Jazz Centrum (agharta.cz) and Bily Konicek (bilykonicek.com). Be sure to pay the small fee for the view at the top of the Charles Bridge tower − not everyone knows to do it, but this vantage point provides unbeatable views of this absolutely exquisite destination. Sleep Ibis Praha Mala Strana (ibis.com) is inexpensive, clean, colourful, comfortable and conveniently located. PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, Canada Where A maritime province on the far east coast. The smallest in Canada but significant as being the birthplace of Confederation, marked by the famous and very long Confederation Bridge which links PEI with Moncton in New Brunswick. Set off from the charming and historical city of Charlottetown, and linger a while at Cavendish Beach and Green Gables, made famous by author Lucy Maud Montgomery who created one of the most beloved characters of all time, Anne (“with an e”). Keep an eye out for foxes on the beach, and have your camera handy because this is surely one of the most pictureperfect, romantic and peaceful places on earth. When During the colder months (latter part of the year) it can be next to impossible to get onto and around PEI. Time your trip during the island’s ‘on’ months but avoid school holidays (North American summer). You can get to PEI during off-season, although transport links are less reliable. 38

Sleep Consider staying in the Cumbrian market town of Penrith. There are great transport links to and from all over the UK, it’s a little less tourist and more authentic England than around Windermere. LIFE COACH with Dr. John Demartini

The longer you hold a grudge, the more likely it is that your negative emotions will take a toll on health. Dr. John Demartini shares steps on how to loosen your grip on those angry feelings

etting upset is one thing. Holding a bitter grudge is another. Over the long term, feelings of resentment can harm your health, explains Dr. John Demartini, one of the world’s leading authorities on human behaviour and personal development. Like other negative emotions, bitterness has physical consequences, including elevated heart rate, high blood pressure and increased risk of heart disease. “You have to remember that everything in life is a lesson, it’s instructional. Find the positives that have come from your perceived negative experiences, let go, heal and move on.” Four tips on letting go of a grudge: 1 Identify what the grudge is about. We often lose sight of why we are angry. What action, inaction or trait challenges you (what they did or did not do that you are upset about)? 2 Ask yourself, are you responsible for the same action? It is unwise to judge others when you’ve behaved / are behaving in

Getting overgrudges a similar or comparable fashion. 3 Perception can keep the grudge alive. It is not what happens to you. It is your perception, decisions and actions that resolve the issue. 4 Have a look where the grudge may have benefited you. Every action has two sides – a benefit and a drawback. Writing a list of the positive and negatives of the situation will soften and eliminate the initial anger. Dr. Demartini explains, “By balancing out the emotional charge on the action

or trait, you can liberate yourself from the illusive stress and grudge you started with.”

WELLNESS with Claudette Freeman

Claudette Freeman explains all we need to know about the latest Internet food phenomenon hen someone first told me about mug cakes, I thought they were saying ‘mud’ cakes and so I rattled off a few quirky additions that I like to add to my own recipe, when all of a sudden, I stood corrected mid-speech. I frowned and then gasped; I had simply never heard of a mug cake, but they’re big right now! As is the custom, I Googled. I discovered I’m not the first person to make the mud cake mistake, but also found that a mug cake is just that, made in the microwave in a mug. But what’s the deal; Are they nutritious, do they taste good, how did they evolve, and how do they cook? Mug cakes are popular now for one good reason, they’re quick to create, taking no more than 120 seconds in a microwave to cook, and not a lot of time to prepare. I am not sure whether I like the idea of moving into a new culture of cooking via a microwave though. I love to cook, why would we want to steer away from such a beautiful hobby? I also hardly use my microwave, except for warming on the odd occasion, and I’m dubious about diminishing nutrients following a good cooking in the microwave. Additionally, I was disappointed to discover that the majority of mug cake recipes online, not surprisingly, lacked in nutritional value and included using the likes of white flour, refined sugars and colourings to make a creation look ‘pretty’. I decided on a fair trial of this new phenomenon though, to see if time can be saved while maintaining a healthy balance of ingredients. It was time to try out my first ‘healthy’ mug cake. In the first instance, I wanted to see if it worked, so I literally threw together mashed banana, crushed flaxseeds, coconut flour, an egg and some bicarbonate of soda for one minute. I was astounded by the result − the cake was spongy, soft, warm and bouncy − just like a cake! My little boy loved it and it only took me two minutes to make from start to finish. At that point I realised, there’s definitely something in this. As I got more imaginative, my muddy ‘mug’ cakes began to evolve into some really nice and healthy concoctions, resulting in the recipe below, which I hope you will love. You might be wondering about the size of the cake increasing if ingredients are placed in a mug instead of a smaller cup. In my experience this works, although it might

Discovering the

mug cake

take a little trial and error to perfect your consistency. It was only after I had seen it in action that I understood how it works, since the bicarbonate of soda makes the cake rise very high while in the microwave, and when it stops it quickly shrinks back to the size it should be. My cake almost looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa coming out from my mug whilst it was whirling around being cooked. My final verdict is that I would consider making healthy mug cakes if I am in a rush before work or perhaps on holidays in a little chalet with the usual offering of a microwave and mini fridge. The mug cake itself definitely gets the thumbs up from me because it’s quick and restricts portion sizes (helps us to avoid over-eating), just be mindful of the ingredients you’re including in the mix.

Strawberries + CREAM

Breakfast Tart (SERVES 10)

INGREDIENTS Crust • ½ cup macadamias • ½ cup almonds • ½ cup pecans • ½ cup oats • ½ cup desiccated coconut • 1 Tbsp sunflowers seeds • 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed • ½ cup dried cranberries or raisins • 6 medjool dates, pitted • 1 Tbsp maple syrup (optional) • 1 tsp coconut oil (to grease) Grease the tart tin with coconut oil and set aside. Process the nuts, oats, coconut, sunflower seeds and ground flaxseed until crumbly. Add the cranberries and mix well. Add the dates, one at a time and process until no large chunks remain. Taste and adjust – now’s the time to add the syrup if needed. Pulse again. Press crust down evenly along the bottom and sides of the tart tin and place in the freezer while you prepare the cream filling. Cream filling • 2 cups raw cashews, soaked overnight – rinsed well • 2 Tbsp coconut oil • 1 cup coconut cream + extra • 2 Tbsp maple syrup • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 cup of light coloured fresh fruit (banana, mango, peaches, pineapple) Blend all ingredients together, starting with 1 cup of coconut cream, until smooth. Gradually add the extra coconut cream until the entire mixture is smooth and churning consistently. Remove the prepared base from freezer and pour the cream filling on top. Return to freezer for 6-8 hours or overnight for best results. To serve Slice tart into even sized pieces while still frozen and soften at room temperature for 1 hr before serving. Top with fresh strawberries. Best kept in the freezer until needed. Will keep in the fridge for 2 – 3 days.

DINING OUT

Palazzo Versace: new chef, a mouth-watering summer menu and endless delights... ames Fiske joined Palazzo Versace as Chef de Cuisine of the hotel’s signature Vanitas restaurant in December last year, bringing with him over 18 years experience working in some of the most highly regarded restaurants in the United Kingdom and Europe. His extensive training and background perfectly aligns with the Vanitas experience. James spent many years with the UK’s reputable Macquarie Group of hotels, filling various roles within the groups’ numerous Michelin starred restaurants including The Cleveland Tontine in North Yorkshire, the Star Inn in Harmone, Yorebridge House in Bainbridge, and Newcastle’s Baltic restaurant where he trained with award-winning chef, Marcus Bennett. Originally from a village near Leeds in Northern England, James’ passion for food was sparked as a child, when he spent many hours in the kitchen by his grandmother’s side as she baked and lovingly prepared family meals. This connection with food, happiness and family inspired James to pursue a career as a chef. One of James’ most important food philosophies (and a particular area of his expertise) is to work with local, seasonal produce to create dishes that are innovative and technical but accessible. He enjoys highlighting one hero feature of a dish and crafting everything else on the plate to enhance that one prime element. He admits a large part of what drew him to Palazzo Versace was the opportunity to work with the amazing produce and quality local producers of the Gold Coast and surrounding region. It is with this approach and a desire to introduce a little more theatre into the restaurant, that James hopes to cement Vanitas’ reputation as one of the region’s very best restaurants, and encourages guests to visit not just for dinner, but for an unforgettable dining experience. Menu highlights following James’ influence include entrées of Abalone – wasabi, seaweed, lemon balm, cucumber, and Pork Belly – marron, sweetcorn, tonka bean, black pudding; mains such as John Dory – butternut pumpkin, smoked garlic, quail egg, enoki, and Lamb Breast – soil baked potato, orange, baby beetroot, turnip. Then of course the all important dessert options of cheese, chocolate, coconut and melon varieties. Enjoy three courses for only $98 per person, or a seven course degustation menu $199 per person with matching wine accompaniment or $249 per person with premium wines. LASTWORD with Raeesa Essack

SWIM STAR As a triple Olympic medallist, what are your proudest moments so far? I think the Olympic silver medal at Beijing in 2008 for the 200m breaststroke would be hard to beat. Prior to 2004 I was only competing in the 50m and 100m breaststroke so I had to work very hard to build up the fitness and the technique to swim the 200m. Also with the Olympics only coming around every four years, the opportunities to win medals are very rare and I am proud of the fact that I saved my best swim for the race that mattered most, the Olympic final. What are the biggest challenges you have had to face? My biggest challenges probably occurred early in my career in 2003 and 2004. In 2003 I competed at the World Championship trials with acute appendicitis but managed to just sneak onto my first major Australian team, only to get my appendix removed the next day. A year later I failed to make the Athens Olympics even though I was the national record holder. Both of these challenges taught me not to take anything for granted and not waste an opportunity when it comes my way. What do you consider your greatest achievement to date? In 2009 I won the World Championships in Rome for the 100m Breaststroke. To become World Champion and stand on the top podium and have the national anthem played in my honour was truly special. It is an experience and feeling that I will never forget; plus to break the world record doing it made it all the sweeter.

Raeesa Essack catches up with the very inspiring and all round nice guy Gold Coaster, Brenton Rickard

What are you putting into place for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018? I work in sport, so I am involved in planning how each sport will operate. I think the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be great for the athletes. It will be an event that everyone from around the world wants to come and compete at. I think it will amazing for the economy of the Gold Coast, creating jobs in construction and other industries along with attracting tourists. Finally, I think it will be great for community to be involved with the largest sporting event in Australia for the decade. We plan to make the 2018 Games enjoyable and a special experience for spectators and local residents. What inspires you? Excellence. I love seeing, hearing or reading about people that are excellent in their field. Having spent the majority of my life striving for excellence in swimming, I really get inspired by others fulfilling their potential in their chosen field. What is your favourite local hang out on the Gold Coast? I think the number of good cafes and restaurants has improved a lot over the last couple years. I live at Main Beach, so there are a few places on Tedder Ave that I visit regularly, Hard Coffee, Milan and Chill. Outside my area I like Elk or No Name Lane in Broadbeach, Blackboard at Varsity or Borough Barista or Canteen if I am at Burleigh.
