ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

There is nothing I love more than writing and beauty…nothing. OK, except maybe my family and friends … and shopping … possibly wine. But that’s how high I rate them on my list of values.

Links Wedding Open Day

For me beauty equates to fashion, style, image, looking good and feeling even better. Not just that gorgeous red Chanel lippie. But when I get to write about it, I’m in my absolute element.

Sunday, 23rd August, 2015 Links Hope Island is opening the doors to the palace and invites you to experience our stunning venue during our Grand Open Day.

So when our Affordable Luxury edition sashayed on to the Get it magazine editorial calendar, I was smitten. I L.O.V.E. this edition because it is packed full of hacks, stories and products to help you add a touch of luxury to your life without you having to break your piggy bank. And who doesn’t want a slice of that action?

We have carefully cultivated an elite list of wedding industry professionals to showcase their high quality services. Meet the best in the business and take the stress out of planning your day.

We have been primping and preening this edition with everything from the latest looks, styles and fashions, to luxe accessories for your home, beauty cabinet and other areas of your life that need some sparkle. Plus we’ve got the low down from stylists, designers, fashion bloggers and image consultants so you won’t put a foot wrong.

Date: Sunday 23rd August, 2015 Time: 11am - 4pm Entry: Free!

The thing is, you don’t have to spend a tonne of money to look a million dollars and the repercussions of looking fab can be life-changing … heightened confidence and self-esteem, more compliments, feeling beautiful within yourself, performing at your best and attracting new opportunities.

Featuring: • Photographers • Cake designers • Entertainers • Event stylists • Florists • Transport • Sample our array of lawn games • Win a luxury Hen’s Day Package at Noosa Springs Spa!

Yes, all of this just from looking good…add a touch of affordable luxe and there will be no stopping you. So we give you permission to go pour yourself a glass of bubbles – Verve if that’s your “affordable luxe” - and relax with our latest edition. Enjoy.

A welcome piccolo of Brown Brothers Prosecco and petit fours for brides-to-be and local craft beer and dude food for bucks!

GET THINKING

How well do you know your

1 2 3 4

yourself?

Looking back over the past year, would you do things differently? A No B You don’t know C Yes, you would follow your friend’s advice How do you spend your free time? A Doing what you love B Running errands C Helping friends

5 6 7

How often do you visualise what you would like your life to be? A Every day, it helps you concentrate B You have trouble thinking past tomorrow C Often, you want to be just like your idol Do you know what you want to achieve in the next five years? A Absolutely, you have it mapped out B Not really C What everyone else is doing, probably What do you dream of most often? A The things you would like to do B You never remember C Strange things that don’t make sense

Mostly A: Well-known You know exactly what you want and how you will feel when it arrives. Being so sure of yourself is great, but you might benefit from making some spur-of-the-moment decisions. You might surprise yourself with the decisions you make purely because they feel right. Mostly B: Mysterious Woman You probably feel a little lost at the moment. When was the last time you really asked yourself what you want and need? Falling into the trap of doing things because that’s the way they have always been done can alienate yourself from your true dreams. Spend some time in your own company and find the real you.

When asked to describe yourself in three words, you: A Can answer immediately B Take a while to think of something C Ask the questioner to answer first Your relationship has ended, who do you blame? A No one, these things happen B Yourself, it must be something you did C Your ex. Your friends said he was to blame

Mostly C: Mirror Image You have a good understanding of who you are but sometimes you rely too heavily on how others perceive you. Take a good look at yourself through your own eyes, not someone else’s and decide for yourself if what you are doing is really what you want.

Developing and implementing integrated marketing strategies and campaigns for the dealership. What has been your biggest achievement? HOME STYLE

Village stores owner Brenden Huntly gives the low-down on how to up-style your home with a new look that won’t break the bank How do you achieve affordable luxe at home? Begin by having an open mind and a simple approach. You don’t need to invest in everything you see or a multitude of pieces to have a luxurious interior. Set yourself a realistic budget and put a plan in place. Create a simple floor plan of your space on paper and sketch in how you want it to look. Put together a mood board with clippings from magazines or printouts from online, along with paint chips from a colour specialist. Having a solid ‘theme’ to work with will help achieve your desired look. What items bring this look to life? Think big! Again, this doesn’t mean blowing the budget on just a couple of oversized statement pieces. Mirrors or larger art pieces will give you a grand feel to any room.A well-made sofa with a simple neutral-toned fabric will soften a room and allow for beautiful homeware pieces to bring it all together. Make sure you leave room in your budget for a quality rug. Lighting is very important too, as this will carry the luxe vibe through into the evening. Finish off with a touch of gloss, metallic or glass as this will lift the overall interior. What are the top 5 staples you should have to achieve this look? You cannot look past a comfortable sofa, feature lighting - such as a pendant - at least one oversized mirror or art piece, indoor plants - living or artificial - and candles. What colours are ‘in’ at the moment? Don’t dismiss a natural palette, it’s timeless and easy to work with - even if you

affordable luxe

Achieve

at home

change your mind later down the track. Accessorise and highlight your natural theme with injections of colour. This season we are seeing lots of well bodied bolds like indigo and emerald, as well as amethyst and teal. Highlights of coppers and rust with notes of blush and oyster are all on-trend. What items should you splurge on? Three things: An Australian-made sofa, solid dining suite and a good-quality floor rug. What are your top 10 tips when it comes to styling your home without breaking the bank? 1. Use your action plan, be flexible but don’t make drastic changes - keep a tab on what you spend so you don’t blow that budget. 2. Get great advice from someone in the industry,we all love our family and friends’opinions, however, sometimes they end up costing you. 3. Scotchgard textiles. It saves having to replace fabrics ahead of their time and will help with your routine cleaning and stains. 4. Upgrade your cushion inners to combination feather/fibre. It changes the look of an everyday cushion cover from plain to pure luxury. 5. Select a wall in your living space that has focal appeal. Dress with a textured wallpaper and mount that oversized mirror or art piece for impact. 6. Purchase the right-sized floor rug to balance the room, an undersized rug can ruin the entire look. The rug should be in situ with the lounge width. 7. Don’t spread homewares all over the place, keep a tight knit on the grouping. 8. Decide to purchase at least one hand-made artisan piece to decorate the space. It will add character to your home. 9. Choose functional pieces for storage. A stylish bone box looks great on the coffee table, yet makes a clever home for all those remote controls. 10. Treat yourself to a good-quality scented soy candle. Budget for around $50-$60 to have your home smelling as luxurious as it looks. villagestores.com.au August 2015

Lucky REAL LIFE

to be alive

A near-fatal accident left her holed up in a hospital for three months…that’s when Claire Flynn found her purpose here was a huge build up to Gold Coaster Claire Flynn finding her “purpose”: Pronounced dead after a near-fatal bike accident, 27 years as a match maker, a failed marriage and signing up for the Kokoda challenge. But it wasn’t until Claire was holed up in hospital for three months recovering from the accident, grateful to be alive, that she decided she wanted to be a coach for people who had also suffered trauma. Claire began her coaching journey 10 years ago as a match maker with one of Australia’s leading dating agencies. She was a young confident teenager who would help men and women to meet their perfect match. After eight years in this industry she left to pursue a career in real estate. But she still questioned where her real purpose lay. “Then at 37 years old I separated from my husband. I wanted more out of life as I was living in a loveless marriage. After being in a codependent marriage for over 10 years I wanted to know who I really was and what I really wanted to achieve in life,” Claire says. “I questioned myself many times: How do I want to live my life? What does my ideal life look like? I felt as if it lacked meaning and had become mundane.” While she was still in real estate, Claire decided she needed a challenge and signed up for the 100km Kokoda trail walk in Papua New Guinea with 19 men she didn’t know. “I became super fit through the Kokoda preparation, with a wonderfully hard body and fantastic abdominal muscles. It was this preparation that helped save my life a few months later,” she says. On January 27, 2008 Claire’s life changed in the blink of an eye and she was faced with a much bigger challenge than she ever expected. Claire was involved in an horrific motorbike accident that almost killed her. “Somehow I hit the curb on the side of the road and accelerated over the island into two lanes of oncoming traffic and landed on the windscreen of a car,” she says. “With an impact of 140km an hour, I was pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital. August 2015

After a short while I started to breathe again and was hooked up to life support. It was touch and go over the next few weeks, and I needed five major internal operations.” One doctor told Claire it was her strong abdominal muscles that helped save her life as they protected her organs. However, the tank of the bike had almost split her in half, smashing her pelvis to pieces. She had no feeling from the waist down and on the right side of her body for more than 18 months. As she lay flat on her back for three months during rehabilitation, Claire says she found plenty of time to think about what she wanted to do with her life. A life coach friend of Claire’s came to visit her in hospital and that is when she knew she wanted to be a coach of some form and help other people who have experienced trauma. Along with not having feeling from the 18

waist down, Claire had no feeling of orgasm. “I became hungry to learn and understand more on healing the body, sexuality, mindset and conscious awareness,” Claire says. Today she is a sex and intimacy coach, the founder of Intimate Options and has skills in sex coaching, bodywork, neuro linguistic programming, matrix therapies and sacred sexuality. Now she knows how powerful the mind-genital connection really is. “This journey has ignited my passion to help women and men reconnect with their own sexuality, but it all starts by healing their relationship with themselves,” she says. After living in Western Australia for 25 years, Claire moved back to the Gold Coast two years ago and fell in love with a man she went to school with in Coomera. She now runs workshops and does bodywork for many couples, single men and single women. Visit intimateoptions.com.au

Hourglass styling tips Book a hourglass personal style session with Queensland The figure is celebrity McMahon... one ofstylist theElizabeth most aspired body shapes of women today. Marilyn Monroe, Kim Kardashian, Nigella Lawson, Beyoncé and . Sofia Vergara all have those dangerous curves, beauty and sex appeal of the hourglass figure. What I love most about these women is they know how to show off their curves, while still looking elegant and classy. The hourglass’s defining feature is her tiny waist, with bust and hips in proportion, creating beautiful, gentle curves you should be proud of. But this ultra-feminine figure can prove to be a bit tricky to dress, so for styling tips on how to make the most of your curves and to dress with confidence, see my checklist below. If you are an hourglass your wardrobe essentials are: • A supportive bra with built in cups, this helps to lengthen your waist. • Pencil skirts and fitted Broderick dresses. • Deep V-neckline tops and fitted cardigans, to elongate your figure. • Full skirt dresses with a deep V-neckline and three-quarter sleeves, styled with a belt to accentuate your tiny waist. • Minimal accessories – delicate necklaces, studs or medium-sized drop earrings. • Peep-toe shoes - the perfect finishing touch to complement a curvy figure. • Medium-sized handbags – think the classic Birkin but if you have the confidence of Kim Kardashian then the bigger the bag the better. When buying clothes, the key is to always keep in mind the fabric and the shape of the garment. Look for fabrics that are supportive and avoid lightweight silks and chiffon, as they tend to create unwelcome lumps and bumps. Avoid chucky knit scarfs, cowboy boots, dresses or blouses with bows and frills and large necklaces. Jeans can be unflattering on an hourglass if not styled well, however, draped fabric pants like the ones featured in our shoot work well for this shape, or fitted cropped pants with no pockets are a stylish alternative. In our shoot this month our model Caroline Wheat is a classic hourglass and all the garments she is wearing are from local stores on the Gold Coast. Check our fashion pages for more styling ideas or contact me on 0410 706 374 or email fashion@elisasi.com for a personal style session. Start the New Year looking stylish, younger and confident.

How does your wardrobe look like for 2015? Are you unsure of your style? Whatever your budget is, we are confident to help you achievea new confidence in dressing by giving you an understanding of colour, shape and current trends and incorporating all of this information into your current wardrobe to enhance your best attributes while tailoring it to suit your lifestyle. Our styling packages start from $350. Call us on 0410 706 374 or head to our website www.elisasi.com and email us

Paradise Point

Suburb Spotlight PARADISE POINT

Six reasons

is the place to be

Paradise Point is the hottest place on the Gold Coast with new restaurants, coffee shops and fashion stores popping up in the friendly hub. The village is booming with the best in food, coffee, fashion, hair, beauty and so much more. Here are the six main reasons you should make Paradise Point your new hangout. 1. Dining Paradise Point is known for its delicious fare and a taste to suit everyone, so it’s time to let your taste buds explore what the location has to offer. It’s a top spot for a day or night out with family and friends with many stylish restaurants to choose from including Australian fusion, Chinese, Indian, seafood, fish and chips, Malaysian, Japanese and Italian. Separated from the water only by the gorgeous park, the location will have you coming back time and time again. 2. Coffee Paradise Point is the place to be seen on the weekends, especially on a Sunday morning when it’s bustling. There’s an ample to-try list on offer, which means you can while away the morning (or day) with friends or simply enjoy some “me time”.The hardest decision you will have to make is whether to dinein or grab a takeaway to have in the park. 3. Fashion Boutique fashion is the best kind of fashion and Paradise Point offers a wide variety for you to choose from. If you’re looking for quality and one-of-a-kind pieces, then look no further. All ages, sizes and styles are catered for in the array of stylish boutiques located along Grice Avenue. You’re sure to find a piece you’ll never want to take off. 4. Hair and beauty Don’t worry about going anywhere else to get your hair and makeup done. Paradise Point has an extensive variety of beauty salons and hairdressers. Whether you need a stylish cut, relaxing massage or invigorating facial – Paradise Point has it all. There really is no need to go anywhere else when everything hair and beauty is right at your perfectly manicured fingertips. 5. Park Are you looking for somewhere a little more family friendly? Then pack up a picnic rug and take the family down to the park. Paradise Point Park is one of the most idyllic on the Gold Coast, with access to barbecues, a children’s playground and plenty of places to relax. Grab some fish and chips and an ice cream and head on over. 6. Markets The Village Markets are at Paradise Point Park on the fourth Sunday of every month. Founded in 2008, the markets are popular for boutique fashion and lifestyle products. With a very girly vibe, round up your girlfriends for a spot of fashion and homewares shopping. Once you’ve stocked up on all of your favourite items, take a seat and enjoy some live music with a coffee or fresh juice. August 2015

Looking after your long, luscious locks ong hair looks great...if it is healthy, with a strong shape and in good condition. The team at Australia Fair Hair, lead by Nicki Finch, specialise in trimming long hair and keeping it looking its beautiful, shiny best. Nicki’s top tips: 1) USE A GOOD QUALITY NATURAL SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER Use a shampoo that is sulphate and paraben free (as these strip the hair and leave it dry and frizzy). An organic product with natural moisture is recommended. Australia Fair Hair stock these products. 2) INVEST IN REGULAR TRIMS Little and often - Just trimming ends at least every three months will keep hair strong and healthy. Weak ends will slow hair growth down. 3) THE LESS YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR... The Community Safety Event Programs are set to become a regular occurrence and marketing manager Katherine Unwin says this particular event will help young drivers and their parents become more aware and safety conscious when it comes to motoring, vehicle maintenance and their personal on-road safety. The information night, being held on Tuesday, September 8 from 6pm, has generated huge interest among schools and parents. “With 50 years on the Gold Coast, we want to help keep our community safe,” says Katherine. “This is why we have brought together guest speakers from Queensland Police, Queensland Fire and Emergency, specialist mechanics and motoring experts for our Community Safety Event Programs.”

Business allows Paula flexible hours to support her daughter As a single parent with a 6-year-old child with ADHD, Paula needed to provide support to her daughter because school was a struggle for her. “My small business enables me to work flexibly so I am there to drop her off and pick her up from school, and be able to attend medical appointments throughout the day. I can work early in the morning or at night to market my business,” she says. Paula had moved to the northern Gold Coast but noticed there weren’t many chances to network. “I had moved to Ormeau and didn’t know a soul and I had a new business and not one contact. I went out looking for networking groups and found that there were very few opportunities within the region. I had to travel to Hope Island or Beenleigh to network,” she says. “As a single mum with a 6 year old,I could not attend early events or night events so I got creative and decided to run my own event program - I have 20 years of event management and industry development experience - so that businesses could come to me. It has been a hugely rewarding experience with 400 businesses coming through the lunch program since it started in September last year. “I found many of the businesses who attended the lunch were home based, mobile or online (one of the unique things about the makeup of small businesses in the region). They had little opportunity to showcase their products and services to a wide audience because of the lack of a retail and business hub. “I found the only other platform to promote my business in the region was at school fetes, but I wanted to showcase it to other business owners, and that’s how the North Gold Coast Business Expo was conceptualised.”

Are you covered? What happens to your children if something happens to you? What do these types of insurance covers mean to you? • Life insurance • Trauma insurance • Total and permanent disability cover • Income protection Maybe the question should be: What would they mean if you were to suffer a life and death situation, trauma or disability? They may become invaluable to you then. Business owners and employees need to be covered for all of the above to make sure you and your family are protected to the highest degree. Sadly, it’s a subject many people avoid, thinking it won’t happen to them. But it is a fact of life that awful things can and do happen to everyday people and you need to be secure in the knowledge that if something does happen to you, you will have the financial support available to get you through. Did you know the vast majority of breast cancers are diagnosed among postmenopausal women with about threeout-of-four cases occurring in women 50 years and older? One-in-nine women in Australia

develop breast cancer in their lifetime. It is a daunting thought and with statistics like these why take the chance of not being able to support yourself and your family? Don’t be fooled into thinking your superannuation will cover you. You must speak with your provider to make sure you are covered. Trauma insurance Trauma insurance will cover you for life-threatening scenarios and will allow a nominated cash payment to come to you upon diagnosis. This gives you the ability to manage any ongoing medical costs, helps to pay bills and provides you and your family with financial security during a trying period. Outside of life cover, trauma insurance is the peace of mind you need to know your most precious asset – your family - will be protected.

Income protection For those who are self-employed, an extension to trauma cover is income protection. This cover may replace your salary when you are unable to work due to an accident or sickness. This will relieve the burden of worrying about how you are going to pay the mortgage, children’s school fees, bills and other everyday expenses. The best part is, it is tax deductible. TRAVEL

Japanese

Turning ravelling to Japan is an opportunity to visit a country and culture immersed in tradition with amazing sites and generous people. To holiday here is a reward in itself. That’s the belief of Gold Coast friends Jolene and Craig McConnell and Jessica Fett and Steve Pamenter and their families, who travelled together. They loved it so much they are now planning to return in December for holiday number two.

Jolene’s story: Who: Craig, Jolene, Sienna, 7, Imogen, 5, and Eva, 1 From: Ormeau Visited: March, 2015 Where: Explored the Tokyo region and Niseko area Craig and I have always wanted to go to Niseko. We had heard how amazing the snow August 2015

is there and the snowboarding experience is one of the best in the world. I also studied Japanese at school so have always had an interest in the Japanese culture. Now that my daughters are also studying Japanese at school they are also interested in the country. The kids have always wanted to go to Disneyland too, so we planned to include Tokyo Disney as part of the trip. Where did you stay? Tokyo Shinjuku Hilton and Cecuko Apartments in Grand Hirafu, Niseko. What did you do while you were there? In Tokyo: • We experienced traditional Japanesestyle dining and foods at various places and Izakaya’s, which were mostly populated by Tokyo businessman dining and drinking until late hours after work. • Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden: Beautiful Japanese gardens and 38

landscapes. We were lucky to see the cherry blossoms starting to bloom. We also experienced a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Tokyo Disneyland. Shopping and the markets in Harajuku. Kiddy Land in Harajuku – it’s a five-storey department store selling only Japanese toys, character items and stationery. Explored the subway and underground rail system, which was scary and heavily populated during peak times. Eva’s pram almost got crushed by workers on a mission to get on the train.

In Niseko: • Snowboarding in Grand Hirafu. • The Snowpark with the kids in Hirafu for sledding and playing. What was the food like? I was expecting the variety to be limited and thought Craig and the girls might struggle

with meal choices, but there’s something for everyone. There is traditional Japanese food and yummy Ramen (soup) outlets everywhere. For more fussy eaters there is also Italian, pub grub and Indian. Would you recommend it for couples and families? It’s great for couples and families. There is so much to see and do for all ages. Although I would warn families about the craziness of Tokyo and the subway system during peak times. We’ve already booked to go back in December this year. We are very excited about having a white Christmas.

Jess’s story Who: Steve, Jess, Zach, 10, and Sam, 8 From: Yatala We both got great flight deals with Jetstar and I’d heard some fabulous things too, including the snow. We loved Disneyland, the botanical gardens, Harajuku and the snow and the après lifestyle. What was the highlight for you? Definitely the amazing powder. Then the food, the après lifestyle, drinking cocktails then going to a Japanese club dancing with new friends. Watching the kids learn to master snowboarding and skiing was great. I also loved how quirky Japan is, especially Tokyo. The people are regimented and polite but have the quirkiest sense of fashion, humour and decorating. It gives it a cheerful

vibe when everything is so structured. The people are so friendly and helpful. We loved the food; delicious steaks, traditional spiced wines, real hot chocolates, Ramen noodles, cheesecake in crepes (in Harajuku), the burgers - it was all fantastic. We even had Chinese in Japan and that was great too. There wasn’t one bad meal. Would you go back? The food and the snow alone are the reason I am going back. It’s the only country I have been to twice (and in one year), so I must have enjoyed it. It’s great for families and couples because there is so much to do. Tokyo is crazy busy though, so those who visit must have patience and be willing to wait for things. Niseko is very Australian owned, so a good place if you’re concerned about the language barrier.

Do you Travel Often? Not just a luxury Massage is not just a luxury to be enjoyed every now and then, or when you think you deserve it (which is never often enough). Instead massage is an essential part of any well-balanced health and wellbeing regime any people think of massage in the sense of a relaxation therapy only; something you enjoy when on holiday or when pampering yourself. But a good and well-trained professional massage therapist should be able to offer a selection of specialised treatment options to help with your overall health and wellbeing. You will feel the effects on your body when you have regular massage. Specialised areas can include remedial massage for sports injuries, pregnancy massage and lymphatic drainage massage. One of the most beneficial and worthwhile styles of massage is lymphatic drainage. Here’s why you need regular massages and how they can help your body. What is the lymphatic system? The lymphatic system is the heart beat for good health. It is the main circulating system in fighting bodily infections, detoxifying the body, transporting metabolic wastes, excess water, bacteria and toxins out of the body. Your lymphatic system can be compared to a

motorway…when it’s congested, nothing moves. The same thing happens in your body. Your lymphatic system affects every organ and cell. It contains more than 600 collection sites, called lymph nodes. These nodes constitute a network of collecting vessels throughout your body. Lymphocytes (specialised immune cells), tonsils, adenoids, spleen and thymus are all part of the lymph system. The main lymph glands are found in the neck, armpits and groin, however, they are only part of a broad network of vessels that transplant fluid. What happens when your lymphs are blocked? When a lymph fails to function properly it becomes blocked and the clear lymph fluid becomes sluggish or stagnant. The lymph starts backing up in the system creating a toxic oxygen-deprived environment conducive to degeneration and disorder. The lymphatic system that is blocked, sluggish and over stressed results in a body that

is susceptible to infection and disease. Toxic lymph fluid can be stored for a long time in the body’s lymphatic system regular lymphatic drainage massage treatments will ensure your system is clear, clean and flowing. How can lymphatic drainage help your body function properly? Muscular movement is required to move lymph fluid and where a lymph is blocked or sluggish, manual therapy is needed to unblock the system and clear out the lymph pathways. Lymphatic drainage massage is the best choice you can make in assisting your body to help itself, regular drainage can increase your general health and sense of wellbeing. So go on, get active and take control of your life. By massage therapist Jennifer Kirk

Your top 5 winter workout excuses ith the onset of the dreaded August winds upon us like clockwork, we are not out of the winter cold just yet. But that doesn’t mean you get to stay in bed under the warmth and comfort of your doona, says Australia’s number one fitness guru and former Australian Ironman surf lifesaving champion Guy Leech. Did you know half of Australians put on up to 5kg over winter, according to the Dieticians Association research? It is easy to understand why, but Guy’s not buying it. “Winter often provides the perfect excuse for people to skip workouts or drop their workout routine all together,” he says. “But the reality is, consistency is key and you can’t build a strong and healthy body by bailing three months of the year.”

time spring comes around you’ll be very sorry you skipped all those workouts and feasted on all that winter ‘comfort food’. As little as 15 minutes of exercise is proven to make a difference to your fitness and wellbeing. Remember, losing weight is far harder than maintaining your healthy weight, so don’t line yourself up behind the eight ball.”

It’s too cold to get up “This is one of my favourite excuses,” says Guy, who suggests making a fool-proof plan to get you out of your warm and cosy bed.“Put a heater in your room and set it on a timer so it starts cranking 20 minutes before you wake up. Additionally, lay out your workout clothes the night before so you can literally jump out of bed and put them on. If that fails, recruit an exercise buddy and enforce a ‘no cancellation’ policy between you.” I’m hidden under winter woollies, so it doesn’t really matter what I look like According to Guy this is one of the most dangerous excuses you can make. “This sort of excuse is giving yourself permission ‘to let yourself go’ and besides all the negative health consequences, chances are by the

August 2015

there are tonnes of options for you. Join a gym, go to a local yoga studio or get on board with an outdoor personal training group. If you’re cash strapped and none of those options suit, just grab a buddy and make a plan to meet three mornings or evenings a week to go for a walk or a run.”

I don’t want to catch a cold “This is an old wives’ tale from way back,” he says. “Exercising in the cold doesn’t give you a cold, on the contrary, exercise keeps us fit and healthy, which, in turn, boosts immunity. So you’re not going to be any healthier by skipping your workout.” Guy says the winter we experience in Australia is nowhere near as intense as other places around the world where people continue to exercise on a daily basis. “Go to New York in winter and you’ll see countless people rugged up and going for a jog in the snow. We Aussies need to man up!” It’s dark before and after work and I don’t like training in the dark “This one is a doozy. If you don’t want to train outside in the dark, no worries – 42

5

I’ve got the winter blues and can’t get motivated Guy admits winter can often leave us feeling sluggish and a little down. “Set yourself a goal for the winter that you can focus on – maybe it’s doing your first mini triathlon, or maybe it’s just increasing the time you can exercise without stopping by 5 minutes a week.” Whatever your goal, having something to work towards gives you a solid reason not to skip your workouts and should get you feeling excited as you move closer to achieving your goal, or indeed, achieve it. “Once you’ve chosen your goal, write it down and put it somewhere you can see every day. Better yet, tell people about it or find someone to go on the journey with you so you can share the experience together,” he says.

Personal training: Cost vs value

t is amazing how many people call around to different fitness businesses trying to find out their “prices” so they can compare them. Taking care of your body and your health shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be something you do no matter what … but unfortunately that isn’t the reality for the majority of Gold Coasters. As owner of Vision Personal Training Bundall, what really upsets me more than anything, is when I ask new clients if they are currently exercising, the response: ‘No, but I have a gym membership’. The issue I have with gym memberships is if you join for 12 months there are four outcomes: 1. You get lots of use out of the gym and the $1000 you spend gives you great value. 2. You use the gym here and there and the average is about 20 workouts over the year (a popular option for many people). Do the maths … you paid $50 a workout. You can get a personal trainer for that. 3. You use the gym hard core for the first two weeks, get distracted/unmotivated/cold/intimidated by the singlet crowd, and you don’t use it for the other 50 weeks of the year. That’s $100 per workout! R-I-P-O-F-F. 4.You join the gym, get a personal trainer, pre-pay for 10 sessions, get so sore and busted from your first workout that you would rather visit your dentist for a wisdom tooth extraction than see that sadistic bastard with the tight buns and perfect hair who tortured you for enjoyment ever again! You just spent $750 a session. 5. I know I said four, but every now and then people have joined a gym and prior to the end of their 12 months the gym closes its doors and packs up shop and you are left with a membership to a carpark. Are you paying for a workout or a result? It is important to decide what you want to get out of joining a gym/personal training studio. Are you paying for an exercise session? I think if you are, the workout needs to be so much higher quality than what you could ever do on your own or that you are getting super-specialised exercises that only a professional could give you. If you are paying for a result it is important to work out exactly what it is that’s going to get you a result. If you think all it takes is 30 minutes or an hour of exercise here or there to get a result, you are not seeing the whole picture. What you do in your week when you are not working out (the other 167 hours) has a massive influence over your result. A few things your trainer should be doing: 1. Measuring. If you aren’t actually tracking and measuring results, it is impossible to see if you are making progress. 2. You should be following a planned out program that is repeatable. Variety is an old trick average trainers use to confuse you. It is advisable to change up your workouts, but changing the session every week is the easiest way to hide the lack of results. I recommend changing the workout monthly, that way you have four weeks to build on each time. 3. Helping you keep stay focused during the week. Awesome trainers set you homework, follow up on your actions, check in on you between sessions, stalk you on Facebook (anything to keep you on track!) and ask you about your week. We have an amazing app that makes it super easy to get results. 4. Guarantee your results. If your trainer sits down with you and 43

you set a goal to lose 9kg over the next nine weeks and you follow that plan diligently and only lose 4kg, we believe they should give your money back! You paid for their advice and they didn’t deliver. So next time you are making a decision about your health and well-being, remember the cheapest is often the nastiest and may even be the biggest waste of money, and in the end the most expensive tag on your key chain. GET YOUR STARS

Get your horoscope

with Patrick Arundell

H LEO July 22 – August 23 You’ll be in your element and keen to take part in projects and plans that have personal significance. The more ‘handson’ your involvement is, the happier you’ll likely be Leo. Your confidence in your self-worth and personal value can also improve. Any recent extra family responsibilities can also begin to ease. H Virgo August 23 - September 22 Though busy, you’ll continue to benefit by enjoying some downtime when you can, as doing so allows creative ideas and useful insights to spring to mind. Delightfully, positive changes in your stars on August 11 mark a fortuitous coincidence and there’s a lot more to come in the next year.

H Sagittarius November 22 – December 22 The call of the wild and a keen desire to explore new territory and expand your horizons may inspire you to make a few plans. Restlessness could be an issue though, but can be resolved by stepping up your exercise regime. However, this month is also a good time to make the most of your love of wider vistas, travel and exploration in general. A change at work may support this.

H Aries March 20 – April 19 You’ll see your creativity get a boost on the 9th, stirring up a desire to share your talents with the wider world. An increased competitive streak could also see you keen to make your mark. You’ll see changes in your stars on August 11, and this encourages you to review your habits and routines in the next year. Doing so could enhance efficiency and vitality too.

H Capricorn December 22 – January 20 You’ll be keen for your money to work harder for you, with actions targeted at enhancing income and making wise investments. Even so, you’ll still need to guard against overly impulsive purchases. Meanwhile, from August 11 encourage study for fun or as a way of getting ahead with your career.

H Taurus April 20 – May 21 Make the most of this month’s upbeat trends for family get-togethers and pleasurable time in nature. You’ll likely be stirred into action too, as your star encourages you to make a clean sweep and ring in the changes at home at least. If you’re an artist or craftsperson a lively new influence could see you keen to take on projects and get more involved.

H Aquarius January 21 – February 19 Relationships, whether business or romance oriented, continue to look positive for the entire month. You can be hot on the trail of a new job or lifestyle opportunities that could make a truly positive difference. From July 22 and 24 your talent for co-operating with very different types of people can flourish.

H Libra September 22 – October 23 From August 1, star changes could bring an improvement to any financial strains or limitations you have been experiencing. However, the lively focus on your social life continues and it could become even more hectic. Despite this, from August 23 you can benefit from taking time out to reflect and pamper yourself somewhat more.

H Pisces February 19 – March 20 You may feel like exercising more regularly, whether this involves walking, aerobic workouts or doing a much-loved sport. You can also find yourself somewhat competitive, which could improve your chances of getting ahead at work, especially if you can show real commitment. A lovely change from August 11 can also boost personal relationships and could bring love into your life in the next year.

H Scorpio October 23 – November 22 You may find your energy levels and confidence improve early in August. However, if you really apply yourself this month, this could result in a promotion or see you achieve a long-held and key ambition. Your popularity soars too as your social sector shows plenty of sparkle and just who you know can prove important.

H Gemini May 21 – June 21 Everyday interactions can lead to positive opportunities and even greater success. You can enhance your good fortune by promoting your goods and services and boldly asking for what you truly want. In addition, the 11th can see you keen to invest in emotional bonds and your abode - and perhaps to work from there too. H Cancer June 21 – July 22 Money matters take on a lively quality from August 8 as you attempt to tackle any desire you have to improve your lot and consider ways to enhance your income. However, lucrative opportunities may be more available if you’re willing to upgrade your skills. Pleasingly, you’ll begin to see some recent frustrations start to fade away.

Effortlessly SPICE

attract the right partner into your life

Dating 101

Modern dating has become more complicated for many single gals looking for love

3 handy tips

f you’re a single women who finds herself attracting the wrong type of men, or you’re struggling to get Mr Right to commit, relationship expert Jane Nguyen reveals that these five simple steps maybe the answer to your dating dilemmas. Jane is passionate about empowering strong women to live their lives with more passion, love, truth and freedom. She specialises in helping women get back on their feet after a nasty relationship breakup. 1 Pre-dating checklist: Most people have a clear idea of what they don’t want in a partner, not what they do want. Before you start dating, make sure you sit down and write a list of all the qualities that you desire. 2 Be yourself: As much as we want to hide our flaws, we need to learn to be comfortable in our own skin. There is no point trying to portray someone you’re not because he might fall in love with that person and not you. Authenticity and vulnerability are very attractive qualities to have. 3 Let the past be in the past: We all have our own scars and baggage from the past, but you don’t have to carry those with you into your dates. Make sure you have healed any emotional wounds before you start dating again. 4 Bring your head, heart and intuition into the game: It is not uncommon for many women to allow the feelings of infatuation to cloud their judgment. Bring your head into it and make sure he aligns with your vision, values, life perspectives and expectations. 5 Fall in love with the guy for who he is, not his potential: This is a common mistake many women make. They fall in love with a guy based on his potential, rather than who he is. If he is not right for you now, he’s not right for you ever. 49

1. Get off Tinder Or any online dating sites, for that matter. Take up a new hobby, sport or interest and get out meet people. Of course, many online love stories have been successful but we just think why not get back to basics and get out and meet people face to face first… and Facebook second. 2. Don’t play games The world of dating can be hard enough to navigate at the best of times without throwing games into the mix. If it’s early days, just chill. Without out being a total stalker, if you want to text, text. If you had fun, say so. If you want to see that person again, tell them. There’s no need to play the “wait three days before you get in touch after a date” game or any of that nature. 3. Just go with it Enjoy whatever this “thing” is that you have going. Dating is nice and getting to know someone is half the fun. There’s no need to be in rush and you don’t always think is this “the one”? go with flow…and your instincts. If it feels right keep doing what you’re doing; if it doesn’t bow out gracefully. Do you have any questions that you would like us to answer? We have a number of experts ready to call. LAST WORD

with Sarah Blinco

Does it really matter if we can’t

delet e it?

ver fancied disappearing? I can think of times when I have – from wanting the floor to gobble me up and away from an embarrassing moment, to the times when I’ve longed for something new, like a travel adventure to the remote shores of South America where no-one knows my name and I can play anyone I like. We’ve all fantasised about reinvention, and many have probably achieved it by taking advantage of a change in location, job or even through an extreme makeover. The mere decision to step into a strange new world, free of past connections can indeed mean “uncool you” transforms into “rockstar you”. A cinematic example comes to mind, in Love Actually when Colin chose to move to Wisconsin, where his British accent was “cute” and there were no past associations present to let on they thought he wasn’t as special as his new American friends perceived him to be. Is escaping the shackles of past mistakes and reputation really possible now though, and if not, does it matter? Each year, more and more of our lives – every element (especially for the younger set) – is captured, streamed and stored on servers the world over. Who needs paparazzi when you’ve got mates Instagramming the world as they see it (which may not necessarily present all others at their best)? There’s been a bit in the papers recently about Google’s “right to be forgotten” – now, in certain parts of the world, Google is legally obliged to consider removing links pertaining to your life which you’re totally adverse to. Great! There’s a number of hideous social pics from 2007’s awful haircut I’d like taken down, thanks. Although I won’t bother chasing the Google gods about those and I assume there’ll be some who will use this law for evil deeds - the idea of erasing the past can seem tantalising. However, even if someone was to find all that you’re unable to erase, how much does a search around the worldwide web really say about you? The real you, I mean. Think about it, how many times have you posted a cheerful update on Facebook when really, you’ve been feeling miserable? And consider when you’ve held back on comments August 2015

or status updates. Your real life certainly isn’t showcased in its entirety online. No one’s is – not even any of the Kardashians. A recent example I can relay, involves my mate Cara, in a tale of happy-hour martinis and high heels, a long tasselled skirt (easily tripped-up when paired with aforementioned drinks and shoes) and unrequited love. You see she fell – for a boy, and on her face; in front of him and a couple of other employers, on a night out which in hindsight, she should not have agreed to partake in. Or at least, she should have had less to drink, or gone home earlier. “All of the above”, she told me in tears. On Facebook, however, she posted a hilarious recount of a night out and busted-up

Who needs paparazzi when you’ve got mates Instagramming the world as they see it (which may not necessarily present all others at their best)? face with no indication as to her broken heart and bruised ego. We can “research” or even stalk online (not advisable – as it will end badly!), but I think Cara’s story is relatable and demonstrates that no amount of Googling or social stalking can shed absolute light on a person’s true nature or situation. As well as regrettable multimedia, there’s also plenty of misleading and downright untrue details about millions of people on the net. There are certainly items I’d erase, but the same goes in “real-life” too. The desire to “delete and refresh” is one that pre-dates even the internet! I’d definitely get rid of all evidence of an ugly purple velvet shirt I used to wear that did nothing to complement my body shape. All images of the badly done red home-hair-dye need to corrupt also. I’d erase letters written and words said in the heat of a moment; I would change the way I have dealt with various situations and certainly better manage hurt caused to others. Even without evidence – electronic or 50

otherwise – these are filed in my brain and probably (unfortunately) in the minds of others too. Would I want it all erased? Yes, some of it (thankfully not much, though). But, as memories do fade, eventually most dodgy digital footprints will fall beyond the first page of a www. search – and who views past there anyway?! No need to fret if your“right to be forgotten” request is denied. Dealing with our mess-ups, for the most part, is an opportunity to learn about ourselves, develop grace, humility and that true self that cannot be presented accurately in any other form but reality. It is what it is, and as time goes by, it’s usually proven that #epicfails do not have a lasting negative impact on our ultimate goals and destination. A comforting thought, accessed only with hindsight. Another lesson on reflection,is the reminder that next time you’re out with work friends, including the one you’re crushing on, make sure you eat a decent meal before popping open that third bottle of vino and checking-in on Facebook with a selfie… just in case it ends up a moment you’ll wish could be forgotten.
